Caught-up in the 2014 Soccer World Cup?

T

his month , athletes from around the world

are fiercely competing for the crown in the world of soccer, the FIFA Soccer World Cup. While the competition on the field is often aggressive, these international athletes also demonstrate that our world is united in many things despite our different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. My own family is very much into sports, specifically soccer. Like many of our readers, we have an international background and have several national teams to cheer for all at the same time. There’s never a dull moment for us while the World Cup is on. Summer is a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. So let’s turn off the smartphones, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend time together watching the World Cup spectacle unfold or simply spending a day at the beach, visiting the Everglades, reading a book, playing a board game, going to the movies, splashing in the pool or just chilling out in the backyard. These quality moments together are what we and our children will remember for some time to come -- and a victory for your favorite soccer team wouldn’t be so bad either. Have a great summer! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Plantation Resident Raises Awareness and More Than $135,000 at Annual 5K/WALK to Stop Drunk Driving By Jill Sharpe

L

ed by a Plantation woman who knows

firsthand the devastation caused by drunk driving, more than 1,500 South Floridians of all ages and fitness levels gathered at the starting line at Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale to raise funds and awareness at MADD’s (Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s) annual WALK Like MADD and MADD Dash 5K on May 4th. The runner and walkers were led by Plantation resident Heather Geronemus, whose father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. “It’s so powerful to see so many South Florida residents, law enforcement and elected officials unite to battle drunk driving,” says Geronemus. “This is a 100 percent preventable crime. The decision to drink and drive starts with every one of us, every time we get behind the wheel of a car.” VIP supporters and speakers this year included Honorary Chairwoman Susan Israel, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, Broward County

Commissioner Chip LaMara and Broward Sheriff’s Office Colonel Alvin Pollack. “Although the fastest runners were declared winners, the whole community won a victory in the campaign against drunk driving with raised funds totaling more than $135,000,” Geronemus said. Former WTVJ-NBC 6 anchor and longtime MADD supporter Tony Segreto emceed the event. Local country favorite Ciara Rae took to the stage to perform the National Anthem and a selection of songs. Popular tribute band 2 of Us got the crowd moving with a playlist of Beatles’ classics. Prominently positioned at the center of Huizenga Plaza was a wrecked car involved in a DUI crash, showcasing the physical traumatic toll of drunk driving. Many participants wore team shirts depicting images of victims of drunk driving and carried signs asking for justice and awareness. WALK Like MADD and MADD Dash 5K sponsors included Ultimate Software, Anidjar & Levine, ADT

Always Cares, Yellow Cab, LaCroix Sparkling Water and more than 30 other local supporters. WALK like MADD takes place in more than 60 cities around the U.S. with thousands of participants walking – or dashing – in 5K events to bring awareness to the perils of drunk driving. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge, serving one person every nine minutes through local MADD victim advocates and at 1-877-MADD-HELP. In South Florida, the chapter’s annual Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash have raised more than $250,000 in three years (2011–2013). MADD’s Broward and Palm Beach chapters facilitate dozens of free events each year to educate youth and parents on the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. Learn more at www.madd.org or by calling 1-877-ASK-MADD.

throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties, including six from Plantation, took home awards from the 12th Annual Cappies Awards Gala held on May 19 in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the gala awards show featured production numbers and dramatic scenes from many top nominated shows, interspersed with award presentations by South Florida Cappie alumni and theater professionals. “Our goal is to celebrate theatre programs at participating schools, and to help build a sense of community among theatre and journalism students from different schools,” said Lori Sessions, program director for the South Florida Cappies. “This year we recognized high school theatre stars in 42 categories, including performers, designers, technicians and critics.” With four Cappie Awards, American Heritage School’s production of Nora’s Lost was the most honored play. Nora’s Lost won Best Play and three American Heritage students took home Cappies for their role in the production. Emily Schwartz won for Leading Actress, Sergio de la Esperiella won for Best Supporting Actor and Fernanda Barboza won for Stage Crew. Three students at South Plantation High School took home awards. Kathleen Palerica and Tajah Lee won for Puppetry and David Lewis was honored for his work on sets. Award winners were determined by votes from the students themselves through a weighted peer- review voting process. Each participating school selects three to six student critics, one faculty member and one show for review and rewards evaluations by critics from other schools. Typically, a show being considered for the Cappies is attended by thirty to fifty student critics. These critics discuss the show before, during and afterwards under the guidance of two teacher mentors. Following each show, critics list and score their Critics Choice in each category. Upon returning home, critics write 300-400 word reviews, which they then e-mail to mentors. The mentors select the best reviews for publication in local media outlets. All critic reviews are also forwarded to, and read by, the cast and crew of the performing school. “Cappies are more than just the awards presentation,” said Sessions. “The process of watching and critiquing shows provides a unique experience for students to collaborate with their peers and improve their theatrical endeavors. In addition, Cappies fosters more community recognition of student achievement in theatre arts and enhances and celebrates high school theatre. The awards ceremony was presented with support from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which has hosted the event since the South Florida chapter of the Critics and Awards Program (Cappies for short) was founded in 2002 as a part of the national nonprofit organization honoring high school theatre programs.

Plantation Students Rewarded With New Bikes for Their Good Grades and Citizenship By Jill Sharpe

T

hirty fourth - grade Plantation students were given new

bikes, helmets and bike locks for their scholarship and determination at the B.I.K.E. awards program held at Peters Elementary and Plantation Elementary school on May 15th and May 16th. The program, now in its 11th year, rewards fourth-grade students for their overall citizenship and grades. Nine students at Plantation Elementary received new bikes and 21 students at Peters

et Japanese Buff

Elementary received bikes. The B.I.K.E. program stands for “Be Intelligent Kind Enthusiastic” and was brought to Plantation ten years ago by Captain Dominick Ranieri of the Plantation Police Department when his daughter was the recipient of a B.I.K.E. award in Palm Beach. The program has been a mainstay for the schools who want to participate while under the direction of the Plantation Police Department. For the last six years the sponsorship and cost of the bikes, helmets and locks have been paid for by GFWCPlantation Woman’s Club. Club President Pat Hinde, Community Improvement Chair Barbara Graveson and past CIP chair, Gloria Merritt presented the B.I.K.E. certificates on behalf of the Club to eager and excited children who could not wait to get their bikes home. Hinde said the ceremony, when the bikes are presented to the kids, is always very moving. “These kids signed a contract with their parents and worked hard all semester long to achieve a goal,” Hinde said. “The program doesn’t allow for any slacking off and is a wonderful way to teach the kids so much about responsibility.”

In the Citizen Science: Be a Part of the Solution option, Jonas Baptiste and Katie Van Winkle also were first. The video documentary of the Gardens and Green Space, edited by Raphae Mikelstein, captured first as well. The environmental debate team, Seaira Crea, Darrion Johnson, Tamir Rabinovich, Jennifer Moscovich and Richard D’Albert, took second place for their performance in the Senate. Special Merit recognition was given to Simone Yen in the Plant Exploration Writing category for her In-Depth Focus on Crops; to Jasmine Spitzer-Smith, Nerissa Mape and Natalie Arnold for their Excellent Research and Highly Original Green Cuisine: Fairchild’s Food and Garden; and Jasmine Spitzer for Use of Space Concept in the Design Your Future Garden option. South Plantation also scored a Special Merit Award for a Well Written School Comprehensive Plan: Looking Back and Planning Forward. Pamela Krauss has been the coach of the team for all the years South Plantation has competed. She credits much of the success to the community mentors who have worked with the students over the years. “I am both delighted and very proud of all of our students for their sustained winning team effort in the Fairchild Challenge,” Krauss said. “The students have shown tremendous determination and have also demonstrated how well our magnet program addresses environmental science issues.”

Culpepper Foundation Awards Fellowships to Two Students at South Plantation High School By Jill Sharpe

F

or the 17 th year , the executive board of the Culpepper

Journalism Foundation (CJF) rewarded two high school students with fellowships for summer journalism study. Jack Levy and Marissa Steinberg on the newspaper staff at South Plantation High School, each received $695 to cover their tuition for the 2014 Summer Journalism Institute (SJI) at the University of Florida. The SJI Institute took place in June. The students will return to their high school staffs in the Fall and be mentors to their 2014-2015 classmates. “I’m excited because this program will allow me to disseminate information to our staff so we can strengthen our culture and become the best school paper in the state,” Levy said. As a junior, Levy is Entertainment Editor of the Sword and Shield. He explained that he wants to expand the readership of the paper, to create layouts that entice students to read, and to have the paper known for its outstanding quality. At the 2014 Florida Scholastic Press Association’s Spring Digital Contest, he won an Excellent rating for his Entertainment Page Design and an Honorable Mention for his review. In addition to his journalism work, Levy is a member of the cross country, track

and lacrosse teams. “Being an athlete has helped me in my sports writing,” he said. “I understand how the players feel after a nail-biting loss or after a blowout win which helps me capture the emotion of the game, the anger of the athlete or the elation of the coach.” News Editor Marissa Steinberg is a sophomore. She said she wants “to improve my writing, especially of news stories, and return to teach my peers what I have learned to improve our paper.” She received an Honorable Mention for her Profile Feature story in the FSPA Digital Contest, and she continues to enter writing contests and even submitted a proposal for a TV show to Cosmopolitan. Over the years the CJF has assisted 75 students from 20 different Broward County public schools who wanted to continue their journalism work during the summer. For more information contact the CJF at CulpepperJF@ aol.com or visit the CJF website at CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly.com. The Broward Education Foundation, an arm of the School Board of Broward County, Florida, manages the CJF funds.

South Plantation High School Theatre Students Raise More Than $4,000 For 2-Year-Old With Cancer By Jill Sharpe

S

outh Plantation H igh theatre teacher Jason Zembuch is

famous for his philanthropic efforts as he teaches his students the importance of giving back by selecting a charity to support each time the theatre department puts on a show. Most recently, the charity hit very close to home when Zembuch found out that one of his fellow teachers at South Plantation High School, Diane Feraco, had a very ill granddaughter. Feraco’s granddaughter is battling stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer which has spread to her kidney, liver and stomach lining. The little girl, 2 year-old Sophia, became the focus of the theatre department’s fundraising efforts in their latest production of “Shrek The Musical”. Since the lead character in the show is bald, Zembuch and some of his students decided to shave their heads to support Sophia, raising tons of money for her treatment in the process. In all, six students and theatre director Zembuch participated in an event they called “Shraving for Sophia”, which was covered by CBS news. “This all started because I wanted Senior Chris Valdiveso, who played Shrek, to shave his head for the part,” said Zembuch. “Chris said he would do it if I did it. Then we heard about Sophia and everyone wanted to do it.” Zembuch said he is grateful for the help he got from several local hair salons. Jacqueline Lee from Naturally Beautiful You organized the “shraving” and she brought in two other local barbers, Shadi from Shawqi’s Salon and Roger from

Barr the Barber. “All of them donated their services,” said Zembuch. Feraco, whose granddaughter is in a fight for her life, said there is no way she can thank everyone adequately for their support, especially Zembuch, his students and Principle Henschel. “I am touched and flattered by the outpouring of love for Sophia,” Feraco said. “This is the reason I love teaching here so much. It brings a tear to my eye and warms my heart.” Donations collected from the “shraving” event and during the 6 performances of “Shrek, The Musical” totaled $4,080 at press time. “This was the second most amount of money we’ve raised during any one show,” said Zembuch, who is determined to raise his student’s social awareness. Proceeds from past performances have benefitted HIV organizations, Broward House and Kids In Distress, among others. South Plantation High School is also known for producing shows in the style of Theatre for the Deaf, interpreting every show for deaf and hard of hearing audiences. Actors onstage are accompanied by a group of interpreters, essentially presenting two different performances on the same stage at the same exact time. Those interested in continuing to help with Sophia’s medical costs may visit http://www.gofundme. com/790cbs.

Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

R

ecent breach of personal data at local

stores has placed us all on high alert as identity theft rises. Let’s power-up our day with a strong cup of coffee and review some key information about Identity Theft.

What is Identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. In many cases, the victim is unaware of the activity until months after the incident.

Identity Theft can happen in various ways:

▸▸ Stealing your purse/wallet ▸▸ Stealing financial statements from the mail ▸▸ Diverting mail from its intended recipients by submitting a change of address form. ▸▸ Rummaging through trash for personal data. ▸▸ Obtaining information transmitted electronically. ▸▸ Skimming or electronic device theft of card numbers.

What can you do to prevent identity thieves from accessing your information?

Here are a few practices that will minimize unauthorized access to your personal information: ▸▸ Contact your financial institution if you do not receive a monthly statement/bill. ▸▸ Review account statements carefully to ensure all transactions were authorized by you. ▸▸ Do not leave bill payment envelopes in your mailbox. Deposit them in a post

office collection box or at the local post office. Promptly remove incoming mail. ▸▸ Review your free annual credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com ▸▸ Don’t leave your Social Security Card in your wallet/purse and ask why when someone requests your social security number. ▸▸ Never click on links sent to you by an unsolicited email. ▸▸ Don’t give your account number to anyone on the phone unless you’ve made the call to a company you know to be reputable. ▸▸ Shred personal and financial documents when you no longer need them. ▸▸ Don’t write your account number on the outside of an envelope.

What should I do if it happens to me?

If you’ve detected fraudulent activities on your account contact your financial institution immediately. Make a note for your file of what institution was contacted, who you talked to and the date/time your call was made. Determine whether you will need a police report or take further action. In response to concerns over identity theft, numerous companies and financial institutions have stepped in with identity theft protection services that can help you monitor your accounts. These services may also include fraud alerts and freezes on your credit reports. Many people find it valuable and convenient to pay a company to keep track of their financial accounts, credit reports, and personal information. Others choose to do this on their own. Ask your financial institution about their identity theft program and see if it’s right for you. Nancy Rapport is the CEO and President of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida. Choosing the Right Specialist for an ACL Rupture

• Gentle, Corrective Chiropractic Care • Massage Therapy #MM16105 • Vibration Therapy • Digital X-Ray on Site • Auto Accident injuries • Workman’s Comp • Active Rehabilitation Therapy

Dr. Al DeSimone

A

nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures

remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help ruleout concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice.

Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He Specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178.
