Summer Vacation Is Coming to an End

L

ike most of our readers , my family and I took

some time off this summer to unwind and recharge. We spent quality time together as a family, explored new things and re-visited familiar sites, met new people and got reacquainted with old friends. Although we may still be in vacation-mode, it’s time to start getting ready to go Back-to-School. It’s time to download that school supply list and stock up on notebook paper, pencils and erasers, as well as brand new backpacks and lunch boxes. It’s also time to tackle that to-do list: school sports physicals, back-to-school haircuts, and register for after school activities. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final carefree days of summer with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to the backto-school craziness once again. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Plantation Hosts State Firefighters Convention By Jill Sharpe

he firefighters in Plantation always make residents feel safe

and secure. However, the week of June 23-June 29th, residents felt even more comfortable as the Plantation Fire Department and the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association played host to firefighters from all across the state who were here for the Florida State Firefighters Association (FSFA) annual convention. It was a week full of learning, friendly competition and family fun. This year’s convention featured week long educational and networking opportunities which culminated over the weekend with an Honor Guard competition on Friday, and a Firematics competition on Saturday. Firematics is a friendly competition where firefighters test their skills against each other in a team event. A State trophy is awarded to the overall winner.

“Plantation firefighters won again this year making them eight time state champions,” said Joel Gordon, Public Information Officer for the Plantation Fire Department. “This year for the first time local businesses were asked to put some of their employees into a modified Firematics competition called the Corporate Challenge which also turned out to be a lot of fun!” There was also an antique car show, motorcycle rodeo, and Family Health and Safety Fair on both Saturday and Sunday. All events were open to the public. FSFA is an organization of member fire departments from all across Florida. The organization provides education, training and support services to its member departments.

Plantation Couple Named Foster Parents of the Year By Jill Sharpe

P

lantation residents Anne and M ike Davis were recently

recognized as Foster Parents of the Year by ChildNet, the Community Based Care (CBC) lead agency in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The Davis’ have been foster parenting for 23 years, having cared for 129 babies. As foster parents with the Children’s Home Society, the couple currently cares for two medical needs babies, taking them to numerous weekly doctors’ appointments and to ChildNet every week for supervised visits with their birth mothers. The Davis’ who have two adult children, two grandchildren and a teenage daughter of their own, said they started fostering and continued it as a family ministry project to support their strong Christian values. “We wanted to do something to serve our community,” said Anne who has always loved infants. “We decided that if we could give these children a good start they would have a chance to become all that they could be.” The best example of that is their daughter Megan who the Davis’ fostered from the time she was one day old and then adopted as a baby 17 years ago. Megan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was a baby and the Davis’ were told she wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things.”Megan proved the

doctors didn’t realize the power of a family’s love as she has gone above and beyond every expectation and is now an avid dancer and a happy, well adjusted teenager who loves helping take care of the foster babies,”Davis said. “We call Megan our miracle.” The Davis’ only keep in touch with five or six of the children they have cared for over the years as many families understandably want to start on a fresh foot with their adoptive children, however the few that they have kept in touch with are doing so very well. One boy is about to be a senior in high school and has grown up to be such a source of pride and joy. “He’s like the picture of an all American boy,” said Davis. “He has great grades in school and plays on the football team.” The Davis’, who usually take two babies at a time, said it can be hard to say goodbye to a baby they have cared for but they say it is also one of the best parts of being a foster parent. “There is nothing better than to present a child to their forever parent knowing that you have given them everything they need to achieve a good start in life,” said Anne. The Davis’ said they hope the publicity they receive from this honor inspires others to sign up to be foster parents as there is a dire need. “A lot of people say it is something they might like to do but never end up taking action,” said Anne. Foster parents definitely experience many ups and downs but in the end Davis said it’s just important to keep your eye on the children. “If you can make a difference in the life of just one child, it’s worth it,” she said. As the lead agency in Broward and Palm Beach counties and single private non-profit entity responsible for administration of the local child welfare system, ChildNet brings years of dedication to protecting abused, abandoned and neglected children in the communities it serves. For more information about becoming a foster parent, please contact ChildNet in Broward County at 954-414-6001. Visit www.ChildNet.us and www.facebook. comChildNet. Anne and Mike Davis

Tree of Life Continues Its Rapid Growth By Opening New Kindergarten Program By Stacey Bomser

I

t’s been almost a year since Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool first opened its doors. Owners Gabriel and Marcy Buitrago say they’ve been overwhelmed by the response, with the school nearly at capacity and exciting new programs, including a new kindergarten class, starting this upcoming school year. The couple explains the secret to their success and what families can expect when enrolling their child/ children at Tree of Life.

What is Tree of Life Christian Academy? Gabriel: Tree of Life is

a 13,000 square foot, state-of-theart private preschool located on a beautiful two and a half acre campus in Weston. Our mission and guarantee is to provide every child with a quality education in a fun and safe learning environment. Marcy: Our school is known for providing a nurturing family atmosphere for children to learn using a comprehensive curriculum, allowing us to live up to our motto “A Higher Level of Care and Education” each and every day.

What distinguishes Tree of Life from other preschools? Gabriel: We don’t skimp on the products and services we offer our families and their children. We guarantee everything we offer and do is top of the line. That includes our 100% organic lunches, dual language curriculum, degreed teachers, latest learning tools and materials, our onsite clinic, hi-tech safety and security, our amazing indoor/outdoor play areas and, last but not least, our oneof-a-kind mascot, “JUDAH” the Lion. Marcy: It’s these things that mean the most to our families. We recently read on a review that filled us with joy, it read “Tree of Life is not just a preschool, it’s an inspiring place of learning unlike any other.”

You will be celebrating your first anniversary soon, any special plans? Marcy: September will mark one year. We are thankful for how

14

God has blessed us. We have grown so fast and had so much success. We are also thankful for the amazing acceptance and love we have received from the community. We are already working on plans for our anniversary celebration.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment from this first year? Gabriel: I honestly would

have to say it’s seeing our dream happen exactly how we imagined it right before our eyes on a daily basis. It is so rewarding to see families happily bringing their children to our school and knowing that we offer a top facility with every feature and service a parent would want for their child.

Speaking of offering what parents want, is that why you are starting a kindergarten program?

Marcy: We are thrilled to announce the start of our new kindergarten program. Since the day we opened parents have been asking for it! Kindergarten is something we always wanted for our kids when they were in preschool. Any parent, if you ask them, would prefer to have their little precious child one more year in preschool than to have to put them in elementary school with the older children. Gabriel: That magic of Tree of Life will expand with our brand new kindergarten program. The kindergarten will be in a separate building that will not be attached to the preschool. Our kindergarten program has been designed to feature a low 9:1 studentto-teacher ratio. This will allow our teachers to dedicate one-on-one time with each child.

What other new programs are you adding this year? Gabriel: We

will offer after-school programs in a variety of subject areas including Spanish, computers, art, music, sports, ballet, math and reading. The afterschool program is open to students from all area schools.

What is the educational philosophy at Tree of Life? Marcy: We ITB author

offer a unique curriculum created by combining two top-rated early childhood curriculums, Abeka and High Scope, which emphasize phonetics, creativity and learning through experience. Gabriel: All of our classrooms were specifically designed to encourage learning. They feature different learning centers such as language, reading, computers, science, art and role playing. In addition, our classrooms are equipped with the latest computers and iPads to keep up with twenty-first century technology. We are also pleased to offer a bilingual, English and Spanish, curriculum which appeals to parents wanting to expose their children to different languages at a young age.

Do you encourage parent involvement in their child’s education? Marcy: Absolutely! Parent

involvement is key in helping develop the children’s mind. We encourage our parents to review the lesson plans with their kids. We also give a little homework so the students can go over what they have learned at home with the parents.

How does faith play a role in your curriculum? Marcy: Although

our school is Christian faith based, we recognize that instilling family values is important to all faiths. We have no church affiliation and welcome students of all faiths. We have students who are Christian, Jewish and Muslim. Gabriel: Love and kindness are values that all children should learn. We teach respect for your parents, teachers and friends. We teach students to live faith through their actions by supporting many philanthropic agencies and holding various fundraisers at the school, including Toys for Tots and Women in Distress. We feel giving back to the community that supports us is the right thing to do and it also teaches children the importance of giving back to their community.

lence and to provide a high level of education in a fun and loving environment.

What security measures do you take to protect your students?

Gabriel: Security is of utmost importance to us here at Tree of Life. Parents are entrusting us with their most precious possession and we want them to know that they are safe and 100% secured at our school. Our facility is equipped with bullet-proof front and rear entry doors, latest hi-tech security camera system, two passcode access doors to the interior of the school, plus every classroom has a private bathroom and water fountain so children never need to leave the classroom. We also have an outdoor perimeter security system.

Anything else you would like readers to know about Tree of Life? Gabriel: My wife and I would

like to thank all the families and students that believed in us and have been part of our fast growth and success. We are committed to this community in providing them with the best Preschool in the area! We also would like to offer a friendly challenge to every parent looking for a preschool to come by for a tour and experience our school. We are confident in saying that you will not find any other school like Tree of Life Academy in this area.

What qualifications do you require of your teachers? Marcy:

Teachers are the backbone of our school. They are the fountain that provides the knowledge for the children. Our lead teachers have Bachelor or Master Degrees. Our teachers and staff are required to perform at the highest level with integrity, excel-

Foster Care Teens Learn About Career Opportunities at AT&T in Plantation By Jill Sharpe

T

eens and young adults in foster care , ages 15 to 21, recently had the opportunity to participate in an AT&T “Skills to Go” field trip as part of AT&T’s partnership with the Florida Department of Children & Families. Identified by ChildNet, the community-based care lead agency in Broward and Palm Beach County, foster care youth interested in the fields of technology and telecommunications took part in AT&T Interactive customized life skills classes instructed by telecommunications and technology experts and executives at ChildNet. Following the interactive tour, foster care teens visited a local AT&T store to meet with AT&T “pioneers,” a group of current and retired AT&T executives, staff and volunteers, to talk about careers and learn about educational and employment opportunities, while participating in mock interviews. Following the tour, foster care youth had the chance to apply for jobs. “The AT&T staff were very enthused and sincere in their approach, interaction and delivery of information which allowed our youth to see that they are just as important as any other privileged young person within the community,” said Kaydion Grizzle, ChildNet independent living aftercare supervisor. “I’d like to thank AT&T for taking the time to invest hope and confidence into our youth!”

As the single private non-profit entity responsible for administration of the local child welfare system, ChildNet brings years of dedication to protecting abused, abandoned and neglected children in the communities it serves. Broward Center Program Turns Theatre Loving Teens Into Theatre Critics By Jill Sharpe

J

ake Rothstein , a Plantation resident and recent graduate of

American Heritage High School, loves the theater and enjoys sharing that passion with his peers. In addition to performing on stage, Rothstein had the unique opportunity to share his thoughts and feelings about a variety of different shows as a Teen Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts over the past two years. The program, going strong at the Broward Center since 2010, gives high school students an opportunity to attend at least one complimentary show per month, and in return they are responsible for reviewing the shows they see for their peers on blogs and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and or YouTube. Broward Center Broward Center Director of Programming Jill Kratish, Jake Rothstein, Broward Center Teen Ambassadors receive Director of Sales Bill Montgomery. Community Service hours for their participation in the program. Rothstein explained that Teen Ambassadors are required to see at least one ballet, one opera, a jazz concert, a classical concert and a Family Fun production in addition to the Broadway shows offerings. “I was surprised that I really enjoyed many of these performances in addition to the Broadway shows. I never would have known that had I not been a part of this program,” Rothstein said. “I also really liked learning about what goes on backstage and all the technical aspects

In order for students to be considered for a position as a Broward Center Teen Ambassador they must be a be a high school student in Broward, Palm Beach or Dade County (private, public or home school) as of August 18, 2014. They must be able to attend one meeting per month at the Broward Center from September 2014-May 30, 2015. Additionally, they must be able to attend and review at least one performance per month for which tickets will be provided. Students must also maintain a minimum “B average” throughout the school year and must have access to a computer and have at least one social media account (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.)

White Spots after Braces Removal

Charley is a 3 year old Yellow Labrador. He never leaves the house without his baseball. He loves to play catch with his best friend Matt and make new friends. His favorite thing to do is go to the park and run the obstacle course. He dislikes going to the vet. He was last seen rocking his favorite sun glasses!

By Dr. Michael Maruri

W

hat are white spots lesions?

Carious white spot lesions, or tooth decalcification, are caused when active caries create micro perforation on the enamel surface of teeth. With an intact but porous surface layer, the enamel will appear chalky white, especially when dehydrated. The white spot lesions can be either active or arrested. Active white spots lesions have bacteria still present and leaching acid into the enamel. If the lesions become large enough, then a piece of enamel will break and cavitation will occur (a.k.a. a cavity). In arrested white spot lesions, your body has started to remineralize the lesions. The remineralized porous layer, however, will still appear white or chalky on the surface.

What causes white spot lesions?

These lesions are caused by an accumulation of plaque on the teeth. Plaque contains bacteria (mutans streptococci and lactobacilli) that produce lactic acid as a byproduct of when they metabolize simple sugars. The leaching of acid onto the teeth is what causes the decalcification and the white spots. Bacteria in plaque also causes gingivitis (swollen gums). Therefore, the white spots may not be visible until after the gums have shrunk, which is usually 4-6 weeks after braces removal.

What can I do to prevent white spot lesions with braces?

The number one thing you can do is to remove the plaque on your teeth by brushing and flossing! You should brush at least 2-3 times daily for two minutes each time. Also, you should limit the amount of sugar you consume. Remember the acid forming bacteria only feed off of simple sugars. The time the sugar is in contact with your teeth is more of a determining factor for white spot lesions then the amount of sugar you consume. Therefore, sugary foods that are in contact with your teeth for prolonged periods of time, such as candy, gum, mints and soft drinks, should be avoided. Supplementing your brushing with a fluoride rinse twice a day will help strengthen the enamel on your teeth. Likewise, your orthodontist can prescribe toothpaste that has a high fluoride content, or even paint a fluoride varnish on your teeth. Also available by prescription is MI Paste, which is a calcium casein paste that some studies have shown to prevent and even remineralize white spot lesions. Lastly, the use of xylitol as a sugar substitute will cause good bacteria to colonize the plaque mass instead of acid producing bacteria.

What can I do if I have white spot lesions after braces removal?

Initially after braces removal, your teeth are dehydrated and any white spots formed will appear whiter then they will once the tooth hydrates. If you still notice the white spots after a couple of days, then your orthodontist may attempt to remineralize the lesions with fluoride and MI Paste. If the lesions are not deep (50-100 micons), then your orthodontist may attempt micro-abrasion of the lesion in conjunction to fluoride and MI Paste. If the lesions are deeper than 100 micons, then there is no way to mask it other than by removing all the effected enamel and replacing it with a restoration. Therefore, the best way to enjoy your new, confident smile after braces is to prevent the white spot lesions from occurring in the first place. Dr. Michael Maruri and his staff at Clear Orthodontic Solutions understand your child’s smile is just as important as their performance in school, which is why they offer convenient early-morning, after-school, and Saturday appointment times. Dr. Maruri offers a variety of treatment options to meet the unique needs of his patients, including traditional metal, clear ceramic braces, lingual braces, Invisalign, and Invisalign Teen. The Advantages of Getting a Loan Through a Credit Union By Nancy Rappaport President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

S

tart your day strong with a delicious cup of

fresh brewed coffee and some credit union facts. Since 1844, credit unions have been known for their great savings and now free checking accounts. However, did you know they offer an array of competitive loan products as well? Whether for a car, a mortgage or home remodel, personal loan or a credit card, chances are you’ll be shopping for a loan at some point. It can be overwhelming. However, knowing the advantages of a credit union loan verses a bank loan can help you make the right decision. If you’ve never used a credit union, you may think they’re the same as banks... not so. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by their members. Profits are distributed to members instead of shareholders. This fact makes all the difference. Profits are returned to the members in the form of competitive interest rates on depository accounts and loans.

What are some of the advantages of getting a loan through a credit union? ▸▸ Competitive interest rates-Lower loan rates mean lower monthly pay-

ments and less interest paid over the term of the loan ▸▸ Convenience-Apply online, in person or over the phone ▸▸ Fast loan approvals-Local underwriting and processing of loans ▸▸ Common sense approach-You are not just a credit score ▸▸ Flexible loan terms ▸▸ Lower processing fees than banks ▸▸ Excellent member service Many credit unions offer a free auto buying/leasing service to their members. This free service allows credit union members to shop for their dream car without visiting a car dealership. All the hassle and some of the fees are eliminated. It’s simple...you get pre-approved for the auto loan at your credit union, let the car buying/leasing service know exactly what you are looking for, then just sit back and relax. You are in good hands while the service finds the auto for you, negotiate the best deal and deliver it to you at your convenience.

Can I refinance my car loan at a credit union?

Yes, credit unions offer competitive rates, flexible refinancing terms and low processing fees. Refinancing your existing auto loan at a credit union can possibly save you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Whatever your reason, your local Credit Union has money to lend and a helping hand to make your dreams come true! Nancy Rappaport is the President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida. Ankle Ligament Injuries in Children By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

L

igament injuries to the ankle are more com -

mon in children than previously thought. The ligaments connect bones together. When the ligament stretches beyond its elastic limit, partial or complete tears develop. The most common ligament injury in the ankle is due to a twisting injury of the foot down and in. This can occur from sports, twisting the foot under the leg in a hole or even falling off of a shoe. These injuries may be associated with mild growth plate injuries. Usually the ligament injury or the growth plate is the more dominant problem. A thorough evaluation will best determine the injured part and the extent of it. Because the ligaments in the ankle connect below the growth plate it was more commonly thought that growth plates are weaker than ligaments and when twisting occurs the growth plate usually gets injured. With the increased participation in sports at a very young age the frequency of ankle ligament injuries has been rising. Signs and symptoms include low-grade to diffuse swelling present along the front part of the outer ankle. Swelling may be present on the inner ankle in severe outer ankle sprains. It may also be present with an inner ankle sprain where the foot turns down and in. Symptoms also include immediate difficulty weightbearing. Discoloration to the ankle and foot may develop a few days later. Immediate evaluation is necessary to determine the extent of the injury. The foot, ankle and leg are examined to determine which ligament is injured and the degree of injury associated with it. Testing of the ligament’s integrity is also performed to further assess the damage. Examination of the growth plates, tendons and bones around the ankle are also performed to determine any associated injuries. X-rays are necessary to determine if there are any associated bone injuries. Growth plates are evaluated to see if they are out of position. MRIs are rarely necessary as a good clinical exam usually provides all the necessary information in formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. An MRI is done only if there is suspicion of a cartilage injury that cannot be assessed via a clinical examination or x-ray. Immediate care is necessary to prevent any long-term problems. Mild injuries associated with minimal swelling may be treated with rest, ice, elevation and an ankle brace. Moderate injuries in which a partial tear has occurred may necessitate immobilization for two to six weeks in a removable boot or hard cast. Severe injuries need to be immobilized in a hard fiberglass cast for four to six weeks to allow the ligaments to heal properly. Physical therapy following bracing or cast removal is necessary to improve muscle strength, ankle stability, joint proprioception and to restore complete ankle motion. If left untreated, chronic instability commonly develops. Recurring twisting injuries then occur with minimal stress. This will require chronic use of an ankle brace and physical therapy. In most cases surgery would be necessary to surgically reconstruct the ligaments in the ankle and allow a full return to activity.
