It’s Back to School Time
T
he lazy days of summer are slowly coming to an end. There are a couple of weeks of pool time, beach days and movie matinees left to relax and unwind; rejuvenate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Before we know it, the kids will be back to school and we’ll be back to crazy carpool schedules and chauffeuring to afterschool activities and sports practices. The next few weeks will be a blur; stocking up on school supplies and buying new clothes and sneakers. Now is the time to start thinking about afterschool enrichment programs. In this issue you will find our Back to School Guide. We’ve put together a list of activities in our area to keep your kids busy after school with everything from dance classes and martial arts to tutoring programs and academic enrichment classes. The guide also includes local child care and preschool programs. Before that first day of school arrives, let’s have a few more days of summer fun with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to school, again!

Plantation Fire Department Claims Ninth State Championship COMMUNITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
I
f three championships is a dynasty then what do you call nine? For the ninth time in its history, the Plantation Firematics Team claimed the State title during the 2015 State Firematics competition held in Plantation. The competition, held on June 27th at the Fire Department’s Training Center, was the culmination of week-long activities conducted during the Florida State Firefighter’s Association annual conference. Plantation hosted the conference for the second consecutive year. The events of the week included education classes, a dinner honoring Florida’s Firefighter, Volunteer Firefighter, and Wildland Firefighter of the Year, and an honor guard competition in which the Broward Sheriff’s Office claimed the state title for the second consecutive year. Saturday’s events included the Firematics competition, a car show, antique fire trucks, a food truck rally, and displays by local vendors. Attendees also observed a live fire demonstration by the Florida Fire Sprinkler Association. Next year’s conference will also be hosted by Plantation, rounding out its three year commitment. “It was an honor to serve as host for this year’s Florida State Firefighters’ Association conference,” said Laney Stearns, Fire Chief. “It’s our pleasure to profile Plantation to firefighters from all corners of the State and to have the entire community join in a celebration of the fire service.” The Florida State Firefighter’s Association, which is headquartered in Avon Park, is the oldest organized Fire Service association in Florida. New Krama Yoga Institute Leaves You with a Healthy Body and a Quiet Mind feature story
By Debby Teich
K
rama Yoga Institute provides guests with an enjoyable yoga experience, from the moment they step into the studio until the say “Namaste.” Whether you are a beginner or advanced, the state-of-the-art studio and experienced instructors will leave you with a “healthy body and a quiet mind,” and keep you coming back month after month.
The new yoga institute is centrally located in Davie at 12900 West State Rd. 84, parallel to 595. It serves Davie, Cooper City, Sunrise, Plantation, Cooper City, Weston, Pembroke Pines and Miramar. Stephanie Cabrera, managing partner and one of six full-time instructors, answered some commonly asked questions about the studio.
When did you open? We opened in January 2015.
What styles of yoga do you offer? Krama Yoga Institute offers different styles that cater to all practitioners. We offer cardio based classes, such as Power Yoga (heated and none heated), Vinyasa Krama, Skanda Yoga, Power Balance and Martial Krama Yoga. We also offer more relaxed based classes, such as Hatha Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Restorative Yoga. Meditation based classes include Kundalini, Sound Healing and Meditation. What is Martial Krama Yoga? Martial Krama Yoga is a fusion of multiple martial arts and the
Vinyasa Krama Style of yoga. This system offers a variety of class styles and sets. Some focus on cultivating internal energy and others focus on transforming the average person into the ultimate athlete.
What can guests expect when they visit the studio? Krama Yoga
Institute’s state-of-theart studio is not your typical one room yoga studio. As you arrive, you will be greeted by warm and welcoming staff members in our comfortable and zeninspiring lobby. Guests who arrive early or stay after class can use the complimentary Wi-Fi.
Are there different levels of yoga? There are many styles of yoga.
It is important to find the style that fits you. Every style of yoga that we offer has variations for all levels. We accommodate the beginner or “Curious Yogi,” as well as to the Ultimate Yogi practitioner. Whichever level you fall into, our pool of experienced instructors are here to take your yoga practice to the next level.
How many studios do you have? We have

two large studios, allowing us to offer more than one yoga style at a time. This allows couples or group of friends a shared workout experience catered to their wants, whether it a more relaxed restorative class or a more intense workout. We offer a variety of yoga classes that start at 6:30am and continue throughout the day until 7:30pm.
Is yoga just for women? No. Yoga is beneficial
for all genders and ages. It offers many benefits, such as flexibility, relaxation, breathing and control of mind and body. Our institute is designed so that couples can come in and practice different styles at the same time. Moms and daughters can attend the yoga class, while fathers and their kids attend the Martial Krama Yoga classes or just sit and relax in our comfortable lobby.
Do you offer a free month of yoga classes?
Krama Yoga has a state-of-the-art facility.
12
Yes. Most yoga studios offer one free class. It is very difficult, however, to get a true sense or feeling for what yoga is in just one class. We want everyone interested in yoga, whether they are a beginner or already enjoying and practicing

yoga, to get acquainted with our studio and staff. Take advantage of our one free month of unlimited yoga and you will see why our slogan is Healthy Body, Quiet Mind. You can attend any of our classes at any of the times they are scheduled, so you can find the type of yoga that fits you best.
Are there costs involved? Clients pay $18 for
their first drop in and receive one free month of unlimited Yoga. It’s like a buy one get one free. However, instead of paying for one class and only receiving one class free, we give our new students one FREE MONTH OF UNLIMITED YOGA. During their free month, they are able to attend any class that we offer. There is no charge for the mat rental. If they decide to become a member of our Institute, our branded, high quality mats are complimentary with their first package.
Tell us about your boutique. We sell our
branded dry fit tank tops in long and short sleeves, track jackets, and men’s and women’s yoga pants. We also sell other local yoga brands and handmade jewelry pieces, such as Chakra rings, Mala beads, Buddha bracelets and more. The final eight teams played on the 14th, resulting in one high school football champion. Four of the last five national champions have come from this tournament, including Booker T. Washington in 2014 and 2012, Glades Central in 2011 and Miami Jackson in 2010. This marks the second time in the past three years that Miami Carol City has won the Miami Dolphins 7-on-7. In 2013, they defeated Miami Jackson, 28-21, to advance to the National Tournament. Carol City came out on top from a field of more than 40 schools from the tri-county area that

They scored two consecutive touchdowns to take a 24-21 lead with 40 seconds left in the game. Dillard drove the ball down the field and scored with six seconds left to go up 28-24. hirty-seven fourth-grade Plantation students were given new bikes, helmets and bike locks for their scholarship and determination at the B.I.K.E. awards program held at Peters Elementary and Plantation Elementary school in May. The program, now in its 12th year, rewards fourth-grade students for their overall citizenship and grades. Ten students at Plantation Elementary received new bikes and 27 students at Peters Elementary received bikes. The B.I.K.E program stands for “Be Intelligent Kind Enthusiastic” and was brought to Plantation eleven years ago by Captain Dominick Ranieri of the Plantation Police Department when his daughter was the recipient of a B.I.K.E. award in Palm Beach. For the last seven years the sponsorship and cost of the bikes, helmets and locks has been paid for the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club (PWC). Ann Ebbert, Barbara Graveson and Gloria Merritt from the Club all attended the BIKE awards at Plantation Elementary along with School Board members and Police Chief Harrison, Sgt. Seymour Council, Deputy Chief Allen Belanger, Captain Rob Juskiewicz, Officer Randy Hamilton and Detective Al Butler. PWC Club members Ann Ebbert, Barbara Graveson and Pat Livingston attended the awards at Peters Elementary along with the Mayor, Chief Harrison, Captain Juskiewicz, Sgt. Seymour Council, Detective Al Butler and sev-
eral other officers. “The children were all very excited and grateful,” said Renee Flores, Plantation Woman’s Club publicity chair. The GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club strongly supports education, Plantation public schools and scholarships to Plantation residents. “We are currently supporting eight students at Florida universities,” said Flores. “We provide free books to children through our Book Fairy project. In addition, we support the Frost Bucks student incentive “store” at Plantation Elementary School. We are very proud of our numerous community service projects over the years which have enhanced our City.” PWC Meetings are at 10 a.m. the second Tuesday of each month, September through May at Deicke Auditorium. Robots and Rockets Stimulate Excitement for STEM Education
SCHOOL NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
E
lementary and middle school students interested in robotics, programming and electronics had the chance to attend a unique science camp this summer thanks to the efforts of Joe Vallone, aerospace engineering instructor at Plantation High School. Earlier this year Vallone applied for and received a $35,000 grant from Motorola to pay for the program. Twenty-five elementary school students and 60 middle school students in Plantation got to build and program their own robots, experiment with electronic circuits and compete against each other to see who could build the highest, strongest tower using just straws and tape. “The point is, it just isn’t possible to do effective STEM education with just textbooks,” said Vallone. Working alongside several teachers from Peters Elementary, Bair Middle and Plantation Elementary, Vallone’s goal was to put together full STEM lessons that the teachers could take back to their classrooms in the fall. The camp for elementary kids ran for two weeks followed by a three week camp for middle school students. “Every STEM activity we do has a reading component, a math lesson and a writing lesson,” said Vallone. “The teachers love it because they’ll leave with complete

lesson plans and materials.” Vallone, who is used to working with teenagers, said the input from the elementary and middle school teachers is invaluable as they have a good grasp of what kids at those ages, can comprehend. Peters Elementary fourth grader Michael Fitzgerald, who wants to be an engineer when he grows up, said his favorite part of the program was learning to program the Edison robot. “When I clap it goes forward and I can make it go around obstacles,” Fitzgerald said. Third grader Amanda LaBuda, fourth grader Stella Hernandez and fifth grader Anneliese English also loved programming the robots. “My favorite subject in school is Math,” said English. Joshua Bezenski, a fifth grader, said he liked learning about the rockets and the science behind making them fly. Plantation High students Danny Hydaralo and Michael Dickstein, who helped Vallone run the camp, commented how great it was for these kids to have this experience with technology at such a young age. “It’s certainly an opportunity that we never had,” said Dickstein, who first learned to code in 8th grade. An experience like this is going to help these kids so much in the future as knowing how to code is becoming more and more important and valuable.”

How Long Between Orthodontic Appointments? By Dr. Michael Maruri
If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, call Plantation Orthodontist Dr. Michael Maruri at 954-473-6900 for your free consultation today. After school and weekend appointments are conveniently available. The practice is located behind the Fountains Shoppes at 815 S University Dr., Suite 100, in Plantation.
Ask the Expert
T
he American Association of Orthodontists states that the length of time between braces adjustments should be decided by the treating orthodontist, depending upon the particular case that he/she is working upon. The periodontal health of the teeth plays a role in how much force and how often a force can be applied. Some patients require more frequent visits and some patients would benefit from longer visit intervals. The length of time between braces adjustments for my patients is typically in the 6-8 week range. It is important to understand that the length of time between your orthodontic adjustments does not correspond with how fast your teeth are moving. Just like technology has advanced our lives in so many ways, technology too has improved tremendously the design, shape and function of today’s modern braces. The mixture of metals used to make the wire used with braces was originally designed by NASA to for outer space. It is an alloy of copper, nickel and titanium (CuNiTi). This combination of metals allows the wire to apply gentle forces for a long period of time. Unlike stainless steel wires that typically have to be adjusted every month, CuNiTi wires can be effective for months. The pressure applied to the teeth through the braces, however, will reduce over time as the elastic ties holding the wire into the brackets weaken and stretch. Regular adjustment appointments are therefore needed to replace the weakened elastic ties and re-establish the forces even if the wires are not changed. In order for your teeth to move, your body has to remodel the bone and ligaments surrounding the teeth. The tissues have to dissolve first then the teeth can move and finally the tissues have to regenerate for stability to occur. This process takes a minimum of three weeks in healthy patients with normal bone metabolism. If forces are applied too often, then tissue destruction may occur. Even if no new forces are applied to your teeth at every visit, regular appointments allow the orthodontist an opportunity to evaluate the tooth movement and make the necessary recommendations in treatment. Usually the original treatment plan predicts the process throughout the whole treatment time. Since the teeth are constantly moving during treatment, every adjustment presents a new set of circumstances for the orthodontist to evaluate. The patient is essentially re-diagnosed at each appointment throughout the treatment plan, following the original plan as a guide. In conclusion, the length between your orthodontic appointments is specific to the individual needs of you and your orthodontist. It is unlike decades ago, when most orthodontic patients were usually seen monthly. Space age CuNiTi wires allow active forces to be applied for a greater period of time giving your orthodontist a greater range of options for choosing treatment intervals.

Four Steps to Checking Your Credit Report ASK THE EXPERT
BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA
I
f there were a song about keeping yourself safe from financial scams, the refrain to that song would be “Check your credit report!” But practically speaking, what does that mean? How can that one piece of advice keep you safe from so much? Though it sounds like an advanced financial maneuver, checking your credit report is easier than balancing your checkbook. Let’s look at each step in detail:
1. Get your credit report
There are three different credit reporting agencies: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. They share data, but each makes its own report. You’re entitled to one free report from each agency every year. You can request your free credit report at annualcreditreport.com. This is the only website approved by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for this purpose. You can also get a free copy of your credit report if you’ve been denied credit or have been the victim of certain kinds of fraud.
2. Go over your report
With your credit report now in your hands, it’s time to look it over. There are three things you’ll want to look for. You want to find accounts that are open in your name and you want to see if there’s any collection activity. You’ll also want to take a look at the number and frequency of inquiries. You’ll want to look through each one to make sure you recognize them.
3. Report inaccuracies
Each reporting agency maintains a separate error reporting process, so you’ll have to report each error to the agency that made it. For basic errors, like address, name, or personal information, the agency can make those corrections with minimal trouble. For more serious errors, you’ll need to send a dispute letter. It’s important that you clearly identify the accounts or items you’re disputing
and explain why you consider the item an error. Attach copies, but not originals, of documents that support your claim such as police reports for stolen or lost wallets, bankruptcy orders that discharged a debt or letters from a lender indicating that an account was opened fraudulently. The agency has 30 days to make a determination about your dispute. They’ll send your dispute to the information provider (the company that told the agency about the account or negative item). If the reporting agency finds your claim to be correct, you can request that they send copies of the updated report to anyone who received your credit report in the last six months, and to any employer who pulled your credit report over the last two years. They’re also required to send you an updated copy with any new information in it.

DBS for Movement Disorders: Tuning the Brain There are more than 100 nervous system disorders that afflict millions of people across the globe. Many of the disorders affect a person’s movement and alter their motor controls. This includes balance, gait, speed of movement, tremors, jerks and abnormal postures. Deep brain stimulation or DBS has successfully treated these symptoms and allowed many sufferers to reclaim their lives. At Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Pauline Braathen Neurological Center, a collaborative approach is utilized. The team of neurologists and neurosurgeons has pioneered the use of DBS since the original clinical trials in the mid1990s. Cleveland Clinic Florida continues to be at the forefront of innovative breakthroughs and successful treatments.
DBS is the use of a small electrical current sent to the brain. Electrodes are placed in specific areas of the brain; the location depends on each patient’s specific symptoms and treatments. The electrodes are connected by wires to a pacemaker-like device, implanted in the chest. The device will continuously send electrical pulses to the brain targets, stopping the impulses that cause tremors or other movement disorders. This treatment has been successful in treating disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and Tourette syndrome. DBS is a very safe and effective treatment. Patients who undergo DBS see a 50 to 70 percent improvement in their movement symptoms and a significant reduction in their tremors. They’ve also reported an average of 50 percent improvement in their walking and balance following surgery. Most DBS

patients are able to significantly reduce their medications after undergoing the procedure. The neurological team at Badih Adada, MD Cleveland Cleveland Clinic Florida Clinic Florida Neurosurgeon consists of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons and medical support staff who work collaboratively to treat each individual case. The neurologist evaluates each patient and employs non-surgical treatments first. If further treatment is needed, the neurologist and the neurosurgeon will work together to coordinate the DBS procedure, as well as throughout the surgery. Patients are awake under mild sedation for the procedure, because surgeons need to ensure the electrodes are controlling the patient’s abnormal movement. This collaboration is vitally important because the difference between success and failure is measured in millimeters. In the past a lesion was created in the areas of the brain that were abnormal in order to treat movement disorders. Now, instead of injuring the brain, we electrically stimulate it to re-establish normal movements with minimum risk to other areas of the brain. The results are often dramatic. For patients with severe tremors, it’s practically a cure; often their tremor is completely gone. For patients with Parkinson’s, we usually see marked improvement in symptoms and a decrease in the need for medication. There are many complex factors that must be taken into account before considering DBS. You should discuss your condition and symptoms with a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. Patients who have tried medical treatments including medications, and have not attained satisfactory control of their disorder, should talk to a physician about their DBS options.

section pet of the head month
“Luna” Luna is a fourmonth-old Boston Terrier who loves everyone. Her favorite toy is a bear head stuffed animal with a rope body (shown in the photo). She enjoys going for walks and finding sticks to bring back inside. She also likes chasing Eddy, the cat and going for rides in the car. Luna does not like walking in the wet grass and would prefer that the vacuum cleaner never came out of the closet. Her favorite activity is to go to the pet store where she gets to pick out a new toy and enjoy lots of attention from the staff. Luna was last seen sitting on the couch with Martha relaxing.
