Concussions: What You Need to Know The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.3 – 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur every year Farah Tejpar, MD in the United Sports Health Specialist States. With more information coming out about the long-term effects of a concussion including chronic neurological disorders, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of this often hard-to-spot injury. Q: What is a concussion? A: A concussion is a traumatically induced transient brain injury. It can present with a variety of symptoms that typically resolve over days to weeks. An athlete can suffer a concussion in any sport. Athletes who suffer a concussion

are three to five times more likely to suffer a second concussion. Q: What are the signs of a concussion? • A dazed or stunned appearance • Confusion or clumsiness • Slow responses to questions • Personality or behavioral changes • Loss of consciousness – even temporary • Forgets plays or assignments • Forgetting the play prior to or after the hit Q: What are the symptoms of a concussion? • Headache • Nausea • Balance problems • Blurry vision • Sensitivity to light and noise • Changed sleep patterns • Trouble concentrating • Depression

Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.

Q: What is the recovery time after suffering a concussion? A: The recovery time is unique to each patient. It is important for the athlete to sit out until the concussion is fully healed and the symptoms have subsided. This typically takes one to two weeks, but can sometimes take a month or longer. Suffering a repeat concussion, while recovering from a previous concussion, is dangerous. It can lead to prolonged symptoms and in some cases long-term neurological consequences.

Dr. Tejpar is available to see patients at our Weston, Parkland and West Palm Beach locations. For a consultation, call 800-639-DOCTOR or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org for more information.

Plantation Senior Living Community Salutes Their Stars With Portraits SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY JILL SHARPE

T

he spirit of giving and a zest for life are reflected in the eyes of a special group of seniors photographed by local artist Hank Henley. The Fort Lauderdale-based photographer was commissioned by Covenant Village of Florida, a senior living community, to take portraits of 70 resident volunteers as a way to thank them for sharing their time and talent with others. The collection, entitled “We Salute Our Stars” will be on display in the Town Center Art Gallery, 9215 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, through Aug. 31, 2016. The free exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The “We Salute Our Stars” exhibit is an added show of appreciation for resident volunteers who last year logged more than 1,700 volunteer hours. “We honor our residents every year with a Volunteer Appreciation Brunch,” says Resident Life Director Shauna Monahan. “This year, we also wanted to surprise them with a special gift and acknowledge them in front of the whole community.” Henley set up shop during the Volunteer Appreciation Brunch and for 90 minutes he took photos of individuals

and couples. Residents were surprised to learn he would use their 8” x 10” color portraits to create a professional exhibit that would be featured in the Town Center Art Gallery. The photo shoot was memorable for residents, and for Henley, who specializes in photographic portraits. He’s only begun to focus on photographing senior adults, he says, and it’s a gratifying niche to work in. “I had so much fun photographing them,” he says. “It’s rewarding when you capture the spirit in their eyes.” This is Henley’s first exhibit using senior adults as his subjects. Covenant Village of Florida’s new Executive Director, Doug Fennema, says the residents and his team continue to inspire him. “We believe in the power of helping each other,” he says. “Within our community, within Broward County, and even across the Gulf of Mexico to an orphanage in Costa Rica, our residents enhance lives, give comfort, and bring smiles to people of all ages.” The exhibit, he continues, “Reflects everyone’s appreciation, and acknowledges volunteers for the special people they are.” As for the staff, he says, “They love our residents like family. And it

shows.” In addition to the 5” x 7” photographs given to them the day of the photo shoot, each resident will be gifted their portraits after the exhibit ends. Henley is a professional photographer

who creates headshot and lifestyle portraits using light, drama, storytelling. He is a former educator, arts administrator, world traveler, artist, and advocate. Visit www.shouldersnorth.com to learn more.

ChildNet Celebrates Nearly 150 Graduating Students in Broward County BY JILL SHARPE

C

hildNet, a Community-Based Care lead agency that protects abused, abandoned and neglected children in the community, celebrated the graduation of almost 150 students who have been in the system of care at the 12th Annual Transitional Independent Living (TIL) Graduation Celebration at Broward College’s Bailey Hall on Thursday, June 16th. The graduates represented a range of education levels from middle school and high school to college as well as GED and professional certificate programs. Alyssa Moyer received a Master’s degree in Parks, Recreation and Sports Management from Florida International University and plans to attend Windmere College in Pennsylvania for her Doctorate degree. Another graduate, Kayla Katz, received a Bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University and

plans to further her education with a Master’s degree in Social Work. “We are so excited to celebrate the graduations of these students who have overcome so much in their lives,” said Kenneth Brighton, Director of Community Relations at ChildNet. “We could not have hoped for a better turn out from the community to recognize the students for their outstanding academic accomplishments.” At the celebration, guests heard from Keynote Speaker Ernst Pierrelouis, a graduate of Florida State University who will be attending law school in the fall. Graduates were also treated to performances by spoken word poets and a special, inspirational concert from Sons of Mystro. After the performances, students were presented with gift cards and certificates acknowledging their academic accomplishments. Other organizations that participated in the event included Broward College, Camelot Community Care, Express Catering, Flite Center, Forever Families, Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services, HANDY, Henderson Behavioral Health, the Jim Moran Foundation, Memorial Healthcare System, 4KIDS and SOS Children’s Village. 2016 graduates at the ceremony For more information about ChildNet, call 561-352-2500 or visit www.ChildNet.us and www.facebook.com/ChildNet.

Firematics Team Declares Dynasty community news

BY JILL SHARPE

A

long with the New York Yankees, The Montreal Canadians, and UNC Women’s Soccer, the sports world can add another name to its list of long standing dynasties; The Plantation Fire Department. On Saturday, June 25th the Plantation Fire Department captured an unprecedented 10th State Championship during the Florida State Firefighters’ Association annual Firematics Competition. Under the brutal South Florida sun, eight teams

from across Florida competed in the annual event. The competition was comprised of six different events involving a variety of firefighting skills including an old fashioned bucket brigade. “It’s a lot of fun and builds great camaraderie,” says Michael Taussig, FSFA president. “It’s really great to see all the teams cheering each other on.” The Association has been conducting the competition as part of its Annual conference since 1978. The City of Plantation has been hosting the confer-

ence for the last three years. It’s a real family event, “said Plantation Fire Chief, Laney Stearns. The teams bring their families; they set up tents, barbecue and just have a great time. “This year’s event hosted more than 200 spectators. As well as bragging rights, the Plantation team gets to keep the traveling trophy for one year. Not only does their name appear on it 10 times, but it also appears for the last four years consecutively. Now that’s a dynasty!

Goodman Jewish Family Services is in Desperate Need of Grocery Gift Cards to Help “The Hidden Hungry” in Plantation BY JILL SHARPE

D

id you know that there are many people living in Plantation who are food insufficient every day? They are seniors and survivors of domestic abuse. You probably stand behind them in Publix and, unless you look closely at their meager items in the check-out lane, you may not realize they are teetering on the edge and lack the necessary food needed for basic survival. Goodman Jewish Family Services (GJFS) provides assistance to as many people as they can but there are always more that the agency simply does not have the means to help. Seniors are hit hard. About one out of every seven Floridians age 60 and older — or about 615,000 people, based on 2013 statistics — faces the threat of hunger, according to a report released by the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger. These are middle class people who worked their whole lives and now they are wondering where their next meal will come from. Most seniors never thought they would be in this situation. They were the ones helping, giving to others in need. Now they find they are on the receiving end.

10

Many seniors in Plantation have no family nearby and many are chronically ill. Many seniors have lost their spouse so now they are a one-income family. Most seniors live alone so no one knows if they have not eaten every day. Shame is a big factor. Many seniors don’t want to admit they need help. They don’t tell anyone about their situation so their hunger stays behind closed doors. Reasons that seniors are food-insufficient include the fact that people are living longer and outliving their savings. Costof-living increases over the past decade have outpaced national averages, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2016, there has been no cost-of-living adjustment increase. As the supply of affordable housing declines in South Florida, seniors are finding it harder to afford condo maintenance fees or rent. “With most of our seniors, the cost of everything is going up, except for their income,” said Barbara Bailin, director of the financial assistance program at GJFS. “Yet they still need the same amount of food and nutrition to survive.” The high cost of health care also

leaves less money to spend on food. Most seniors take multiple medications, some add up to more than $300 a month. Seniors in Plantation are being forced to choose between paying for food and paying for their medicine. Some seniors receive less than $1500 in monthly in Social Security benefits. At the end of most months, the money is gone. There is nothing or very little left for food. “Every day people are hungry. They live in Plantation and the surrounding areas. They call our office hoping we can help them feed themselves and their families,” said Jennifer Cohen, development officer for Goodman JFS. “We are trying to help as many people as we can but there are always more in need. We hope Plantation residents will respond to our request for gift cards or donations so no one in our community will go hungry.” Goodman JFS is asking Plantation residents to please consider making a donation of a grocery store gift card. Gift cards can be mailed to:

that the veterans always enjoy. Each veteran is accompanied by a guardian, who pays $400 for round-trip airfare, buses, meals and a few souvenirs. Paramedics and doctors also accompany the veterans. Korean War veterans have gone on flights when seats are available. Throughout the daylong trip, veterans are greeted and honored by well-wishers, color guards, first responders, fellow military, and families with their children. Plantation resident John “JJ” Schmid, a U.S. Air Force mechanic, who served in World War II was one of 79 World War II and Korean War veterans who participated in an honor flight last year. Schmidt was elated when a general he met on the trip shook his hand. “I couldn’t believe a general shook my hand. Whoever heard of a general shaking your hand,” said Schmid. “Some of the children who greeted us were seven, eight and nine year-olds, and they were clapping and waving flags,” Schmid added. “It was overwhelming. Noticeably touched by the outpouring of sentiment, Schmid said he and the other veterans took the cheering, claps and honors on behalf of all the American soldiers who served. Even though Schmid and fellow veteran Covenant Village of Florida resident Al Foster had a very early start that day, everyone agreed it was a trip worth taking. “The Iwo Jima was the real McCoy, said Schmid. And the World War II Memorial was, well, itww was just awesome.

Local Amateur Radio Clubs Host Field Day at Markham Park BY JILL SHARPE

A

bout eighty people enjoyed meeting and talking with ham radio operators at “Amateur Radio Field Day” on June 25th and 26th in Markham Park. The annual event, jointly hosted by the Broward Amateur Radio Club and the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Radio Club, provided a chance for the public to see local amateur radio operator (a/k/a “hams”) demonstrate their emergency communication skills as they operate portable stations throughout Broward County. Field Day is an annual event sponsored by the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), the national association for amateur radio. Amateur radio operators (a/k/a “hams”) all over the United States operate their portable Field Day stations without

using commercial electric power. The goal is to contact other amateur stations using only emergency power - batteries, solar cells or gas generators. In a real emergency or natural disaster, conventional power and communication grids almost always lose service, often for extended periods. Hams fill this void by volunteering their time and equipment to operate from emergency sites and relay messages from the disaster area. But Field Day is also about having fun! There was plenty of visiting, picnicking and demonstrations of various aspects of amateur radio, including “Get-On-The-Air” stations that allowed the attendees to make radio contacts around the world. At Markham Park, a group of Boy Scouts

worked toward earning their merit badges. Events were also held during the weekend at Quiet Waters park and at the Villages of Hillsboro Park. “Everyone had a great time and made hundreds of radio contacts around the country as part of their Field Day contesting activities, said Scott Ireland, Public Information Officer for the Southern Florida Section ARRL - the National Association for Amateur Radio. Folks who missed out on this great and very different event need not despair. According to Ireland, there will probably be a “Winter Field Day” event. Stay-tuned for more information.

BY JILL SHARPE

M

iami Dolphins Youth Programs hosted more than 1,300 student-athletes as part of the 9th annual Dolphins Academy Youth and High School 7on7 Tournament. The event began on Friday, June 24 with a symposium at the Don Taft University Center Arena at Nova Southeastern University with breakout sessions led by the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress (RISEtoWIN.org). Athletes heard from RISE speaker Derek Greenfield and participated in special individual and group activities designed to increase team building and communication skills. “Friday’s symposium set the tone for the weekend by emphasizing the importance of respect, understanding

of differences and teamwork. The level of engagement demonstrated by the athletes during the activities was exciting to see and continued throughout the tournament.” RISE Executive Director Ndidi Massay said. The high school football tournament commenced on Saturday, June 25 at Plantation Park. The tournament consisted of round robin play and then moved into a single elimination format. The high school teams competed in the championship round on Sunday, June 26. Carol City won the tournament 35-31 against Miami Northwestern. Twenty-eight teams also competed in the youth tournament, which consisted of three age groups (10U, 12U and 14U). Miramar won both the 10U and 12U competitions, with DKC taking first place in the 14U category. Additionally, all participants had the opportunity to take part in RISE’s “It Takes All Colors” photo booth throughout the event. “Our mission is to be the

Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten Offers an Enriching Pre-School Experience for your Child

T

he health and well-being of our children is one of the most important things a parent strives for. Even at a young age, we want the very best educational setting we can find for them. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in Plantation Acres has been educating young minds for nearly three decades with an unique, academic environment. Recently Kathie Geller O’Dwyer, the Owner/ Director of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, answered some commonly asked questions about her school.

What is Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? Developmental Pre-School

and Kindergarten was created to be an academic, enriching environment for children ages 16 months through 6 years of age. The goal of the school is to build a strong, energetic learner” who utilizes all his/her senses to glean information and analyze it’s meaning. I sought to return to work as a speech and language pathologist outside the home when my children were two and three years of age. Unable to find a pre-school that would enhance my children’s interest to learn academics and have fun at the same time, I embarked upon the creation of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in order to fulfill this goal.

What type of curriculum does Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten use? DPK

utilizes a curriculum I created called “The Learning Ladder”. This curriculum covers all the different areas of learning in a hierarchy of skills. I was a pioneer in the Child Care industry in implementing a cognitive curriculum of this type.

Please tell us a little bit about the facility.

The 10,000 square foot, free-standing building is built on three acres of land with plenty of room for active pre-schoolers. There are ten spacious classrooms, a library, music room, gymnasium, Spanish language lab and computer room.

with the Broward County School calendar, DPK offers a wonderful, action packed Summer Camp called Camp Phoenix, that includes swimming daily in our large, heated swimming pool. Beginning in April, DPK offers swim instruction with a licensed Water Safety instructor that is open to the community.

Please tell us about your background. I hold a

Master’s Degree in Speech, Hearing and Language Pathology from Adelphi University. Since graduating in 1972 with my degree, I have taught children with speech and language delays and learning differences in the public schools of New York. I was the Director of Speech and Language Services at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and Blind and the District Diagnostician for St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. I moved to South Florida in 1982 and built my first nursery

What sets Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten apart from other preschools?

DPK is one of the only pre-schools that has classrooms with narrow age parameters, small class size and additional staff to insure exceptional pupil teacher ratios. It is also a pre-school with the owner on the premises to preserve quality control in the learning environment. In addition, DPK boasts an exceptional private Kindergarten that does accept children who may miss the Broward County cut off of September 1st.

What else would you like us to know about Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten?

How long have you been in South Florida?

We have been serving the Plantation, Sunrise, Davie and Weston communities for 30 years.

school in 1985.

Please tell us about your faculty and staff.

The faculty consists of 26 well-trained staff members that are all certified by Child Care Service. Teachers hold a Child Developmental Associate Credential if teaching children up to three years of age. Pre-kindergarten teachers hold an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. All staff are finger printed and cleared by Child Care Services.

Do you offer flexible scheduling? Depending

upon the age of the children, students may attend two, three or five days a week. The academic day runs from 8:30 a.m. though 2:00 p.m. depending on age parameters. Extended day hours are available from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Do you offer a summer camp program?

American Heritage School Has Most Wins at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD

BY JILL SHARPE

A

fter months of intensive research and success at regional and affiliate-level competitions, three students at American Heritage School earned top awards, the most of any school, after they presented theirprojects at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, held at the University of Maryland, College Park Campus in the Washington, D.C. area, June 12-16. Rudy Moise, 8th grader, won 2nd place for his Individual Exhibit, Joshua Hoffman, 7th grader, won 3rd place for his Individual Documentary, and Flora Ranis, 8th grader, won 3rd Place for her Paper. Each year more than half a million students worldwide participate in the annual National History Day Contest. Students create projects in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. The program encourages students to conduct original historical research using both primary and secondary sources around an annual theme. The 2016 theme was Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History. After completing a project, students compete in a series of history contests beginning at the local level. The top students in all 50 states, D.C., and several U.S. territories and international schools are given the opportunity to present their projects at the National Contest. This year thousands of students from around the world presented their work to judges at the National Contest. “The work students put into these projects is astounding,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “To make it to the National Contest is an incredible accomplishment. Fewer than 1% of all projects make it to this level. It requires a superb level of research and critical thinking skills. I am confident we will continue to see great things from all of these students because the skills learned through competing in NHD help prepare students for success in college and career.” More than 300 historians and education professionals evaluate the students’ work at the national competition. $150,000 worth of scholarships were awarded

at the national awards ceremony and approximately 100 students took home cash prizes between $250 and $1,000 for superior work in a particular category of judging. For more information, visit nhd.org.

Broward Center Teen Ambassadors Program is Seeking Applications BY JILL SHARPE

T

he Broward Center for the Performing Arts is seeking high school students with an interest in the performing arts and an aptitude for writing for its Teen Ambassador Program. Three students from Plantation and Sunrise, Valeria Hansen, Jonathan Howard and Javonda Carter, participated in the program this past year and said it was an unforgettable experience which provided many unique opportunities. Applications for the 2016-2017 school year are due by August 26th. Up to 24 students will be accepted into the program, which runs from September 2016- May 2017. It includes guest speakers, master classes, back stage tours, meet and greets with professionals in various career tracks connected to the arts and more. The students attend performances presented at the Broward Center and its affiliated venues. They also provide reviews for postings on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and or Instagram. The students

receive at least 10 community service hours each month for their participation. To be considered for a position, students must attend a high school in Broward, Palm Beach or Dade County as of August, 2016; attend one meeting per month at the Broward Center; attend and review at least one performance per month for which tickets are provided by the Broward Center; maintain a minimum “B” average throughout the school year; have access to a computer and have at least one social media account. They must also complete an application which includes an essay about why they will be a valuable member of the program, as well as their experience or feelings for or about live performing arts. Howard, who participated in the program for three years and just graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, said his favorite part of the program was having access to so many shows, sitting in the music pit during some performances and the friendships he made along the way. “The mentors are great, supportive and go out of their way to get us experiences not available to just anyone,” said Howard. “The program taught me to be open to new things. As part of the program you have to attend at least one show in each genre. I went to some shows just to meet my quota, not thinking I would like it but I was mistaken. In the past I would have never willingly attended a symphony or opera and now I would.”

Left to right are Javonda Carter, Valeria Hansen and Jonathan Howard.

, like many people have been caught up in the presidential election. This will not be a political statement, but rather a comparison of behavior. As I watched the debates and the many speeches of all the candidates, it became apparent that in many instances the issues became secondary and personal attacks moved to the forefront. It was not about moving forward, but rather throwing stones and berating the other individuals. It became petty and in many instances demonstrated a lack of maturity and civility. So, as I watched the candidates battle day after day, I began to realize that in many ways this behavior was quite similar to the atmosphere we sometimes see in a divorce. Often times the parties involved in a divorce lose focus on the issues as well. It is not about moving forward, but rather more about making the other party look bad. We hear about all the wrongs that were done and how the spouse should not be rewarded for his/her behavior. It becomes more about emotion and much less about logic and common sense. Behavior also often lacks civility and maturity. I will say that this is not the “norm,” but rather a minority of the cases.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

I know many people have been “put off” by the behavior of some of the candidates. In some instances, the electorate has stopped listening. The behavior has almost becomes embarrassing to some voters. Judges can also have a similar reaction to such behavior. Since Florida is in fact a “No Fault State,” the behavior of a party is almost never an issue. It doesn’t matter why the parties are getting divorced, as long as one of the participants believes that the marriage is in fact “Irretrievably Broken.” Of course, a parent’s behavior can sometimes be an issue if it is believed that it might have a negative impact on minor children. The most difficult divorces to finalize are generally the one’s which are controlled by emotions and not by reason. I certainly understand the emotional impact of divorce, both on the participants and the children. It is difficult to put emotion aside and consider it from a distance. That is probably the most compelling reason to hire an attorney. An attorney can guide the client in the right direction and hopefully not get involved in the emotion of it all. It is important to look forward in one’s life and not just stare in the “rearview” mirror. I think the consensus is that the name calling and sometimes immature behavior of the candidates have turned much of America off. It is not the way adults are expected to act. Keep that in mind if you are involved in a divorce. I think we can agree that it doesn’t really accomplish anything. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

s the summer draws to a close we begin thinking about all those things Autumn brings. Cooler weather, kids sports, and of course, back to school. It’s that time again for new clothes, fresh haircuts and the customary hustle and bustle of getting the kids back and forth to school. Because we want our kids to have a safe and successful school year, here are a few tips to help make that happen. If your child walks to school, make sure they stay on the main streets, always try to walk with a friend and always go directly to or from school. This one may be difficult, but “Don’t walk and text.” Stress with your child the need to always be aware of their surroundings when walking. And be sure to have a discussion with your younger children about Stranger Danger. If you are driving your children to school always use seat belts. And, if you’re transporting little ones, please use an appropriate car seat. The Plantation Fire Department will happily check or install your car seat on Thursday mornings at our Administration Building. Just call 954-797-2150 to make an appointment.

If your children ride bicycles to school, ensure the bike is in good working order, they always wear helmets, and provide them with a sturdy lock and chain so they can properly secure the bike at school. As darkness comes a little earlier, make sure your children have reflective items on their clothes and backpacks so they can be seen by drivers. As drivers we must also be alert to children walking and playing in the streets at dusk and after dark. Be aware and always obey school zones. Finally, mark your calendars for our 60th Annual Barbecue! Sunday, November 4th. Watch for the ticket requests in the mail or order your tickets online. Be sure not to miss this historical event! Still Not Saving? You’re Not Alone! ask the expert

BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA

W

e all know we need to save more, but we still don’t actually do it. Why is that? Let’s grab a cup of coffee and discuss ways to start funding our “emergency fund” savings account… Based on a recent survey from Bankrate.com, only 23% of the respondents have the recommended 6 months of living expenses saved. This survey also revealed that 60% of Americans don’t feel comfortable with their current savings position. Many experts say the problem is there’s just not enough money left at the end of the month for savings. This is true no matter how much you make; fewer than half of people with incomes more than $75,000 have that 6-month cushion. Rebecca Kennedy, the founder of Kennedy Financial Planning in Denver, says that after utilities, rent and other expenses, there’s no money left over for savings. It may seem impossible to create an emergency fund, but there are always ways to squeeze a few extra dollars out of each month. Consider these saving tips:

Start small

If you save $5 a week for four years, you’ve got an emergency fund of just over $1,000. That’s a great start to a rainy day fund, and you can do it by giving up one vending machine soda a day. You might also consider a 52-week plan where you save $1 the first week, $2 the second, and so on. At the end of a year; you’ll have saved almost $1,400.

Pay yourself first

Think about your savings as another bill. Make your savings as important as your house note, car payment, and utility bills.

Automate it

Consider setting up a Club Account or a savings account with direct deposit at your local credit union. You’ll also earn a little bit of interest on your savings to help you on your way.

Put luxury in the back seat

Whether it’s a fancy coffee drink, a fast food meal, or the latest cell phone, things we don’t need will consume much of our income. You don’t need to give up your vices all together. The answer may be to cut back on consumption instead. Go without your Starbucks on Friday or wait 6 months for the price to drop on a gadget. Put the difference into your savings account.

Look at recurring expenses

It may be time to take a look at your monthly bills. Simply giving up a premium movie channel for a year

could save you as much as $240. Once you start saving, ask yourself three questions before you take even a dollar out of your emergency fund… Is this purchase absolutely necessary? What can I cut back on this month to pay for it? Do I need it right now? Unless the answer to all of these questions is yes, leave the money where it is. Dear Friend, I just created a very interesting price chart for the three top brands of air conditioners. I was surprised when I completed the chart. I found a huge break in pricing that I wanted to share with potential clients whose A/C is over 12 years old. One system in particular has the highest SEER (Energy Savings) at a ridiculous price. If you’re curious about what it would cost to replace your A/C properly at the lowest possible price, then here is an easy way to find out.
