Make Time for Family

T

his summer ’ s World Cup fever has subsided,

vacation memories are slowly fading away, and the kids are settling back into their school routines. Our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” Before we become bogged down with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let us not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun family time. Best of all, the sun is not quite so scorching hot, but the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So, turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit and get out there and enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit the oldest town in North America (Saint Augustine), catch some fish, or visit your favorite characters in the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day at school or work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

“We were able to help fund projects for the community and give a significant donation to Make-a-Wish Foundation,” said Durham. “We are definitely proud of all our accomplishments.” Many people don’t remember that it was the PJWC who first embarked on a service project in 1982 called “Make-A-Wish”. This planted the seed for “Make-AWish Southern Florida. This year the club was honored by Make-A-Wish Southern Florida at the 30th year of granting wishes event at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. During the 2013-2014 year, PJWC raised enough money to donate over $20,000 to the chapter. On June 18th, PJWC were also pleased to give out scholarships to four well deserving high school graduates. Madison Behm from Plantation High School, Beatrice Cantor from Plantation High School and Alexis Williams from Nova High School each received $1,000 scholarships from the club. Describe the atmosphere at the studio. We

want all of the students to feel like it is their second home. They know all of the staff members are looking out for them. When they enter the studio, they immediately feel that warm family feeling.

The Junior Company members are required to take three hours of class per week. The regular Company members are required to take a minimum of six hours per week, but most take more. These dancers participate in local and national competitions, and local charity events.

Stella Palumbo, owner, founder and director, answered some commonly asked questions about the studio.

What is your background? My dance teacher

encouraged me to attend Dance Educators of America’s teacher’s training school. I started teaching at the age of 16 and bought the studio at 19. Even as a studio owner, I continue to study my craft locally. I also travel to New York City to take professional and master classes, and attend dance studio business seminars on a regular basis.

children who want to get used to dance, as well as older children who enjoy dance but do not want to pursue it as a career. We use the same lesson plans for our recreational and serious dancers. This way, if a recreational student wants to transition into a more serious program, they have a good solid base of technique. The recreational dancers progress more slowly since they do not dedicate as many hours, but they still get an excellent education. We make sure these classes are fun to keep the dancers interested. All of the dancers receive the same dedication, attention and encouragement regardless of their level.

Many of my students are also dancing professionally around the world. They are working on cruise ships, in Las Vegas and at Disney. They have been backup dancers for major artists and made music videos. One of my former students is currently on the hit television show SMASH on NBC.

Do you offer a summer program? We have

a huge summer program, where the children can dance from 9am 3pm, Monday to Friday. We also offer after care. Many children learn as much in this 6-week program as they do during the year-long program offered after school and on Saturdays.

Young Readers Treated To a Super Summer Finale Event at West Regional Library By Jill Sharpe

A

pair of superhe -

roes came to Plantation on Saturday to recognize the efforts of local super readers. Broward County’s West Regional Library Summer R.E.A.Ding (Reading, Exploring, Art, Discovery) program culminated in the ‘Summer Finale’ event on Saturday, August 2nd with visits from Batman and Spiderman. About two hundred parents and children filled up the library’s Multi-Purpose Room for a educational and entertaining afternoon sponsored by Friends of the West Regional Library. In addition to celebrating their summer of reading, families got to try their luck for several raffles, pick up free books, and take pictures with the two superheroes. The wait to get in did not dampen the excitement of Gidget Saballos of Plantation, whose son and daughter both participated in the summer reading program. Her eleven-year-old son Nicholas said that ‘Treasure Island’ was his favorite book to read, calling it “an action-packed story with many exciting events.” “Our goal is to keep children reading, because if children aren’t reading, they can lose up to one-third of their skill level,” said Meryll Cohen, the library branch’s Director of Youth Services. “This is an incentive program, as we also want the little ones to start reading.” The event kicked off with raffles of several family-friendly items, from gift baskets filled with stuffed animals to tickets to the Museum of Science and Discovery. Tables were set up around the edge of the room for door prizes and book giveaways for each child in attendance. The undisputed stars of the show, Batman and

Spiderman, then entered to raucous applause. After recognizing all the great reading the children did over the summer, Batman and Spiderman wanted to make sure the kids there were exercising their bodies as well as their minds. The two caped crusaders had individual children come up front to show off physical fitness skills like handstands, push-ups, and breakdancing. Then, they kept the whole crowd moving through a series of jumping jacks and squats. Anyone not wore out by all that action could have their picture taken with Batman and Spiderman after the program had ended. Alexis Purcell of Plantation teaches at nearby Peters Elementary School and was there with her daughter, Shiloh, on Saturday. Winning the raffle for tickets to the Young at Art Museum topped off a fun summer for the family. “When I told Shiloh about this event, she asked me, ‘Why are the superheroes out during the day?’. I told her they’re working day and night.” Purcell continued, “We’re working to instill reading in her, and the summer reading program kept her interested and she really enjoyed it.” While the ‘Summer Finale’ celebration signaled the transition towards fall and the school year, West Regional Library has a full slate of fun, educational activities lined up for children and teenagers. Free assistance with homework is available on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for children in kindergarten up to the twelfth grade. Kids between the ages of twelve and eighteen are invited to the library on Saturday, September 27th for a mini-convention focused on anime and Marvel Comics characters. The library is also hosting a Chess Club for children between the ages of five and eighteen on certain Saturdays of each month. On a weekly basis, parents can find a packed calendar filled with everything from Wiggleworm story and singing time for toddlers to SAT Test workshops for high schoolers. While the focus of all these events is youth-related, adults may find themselves enjoying these activities just as much as their kids. “I love interacting with the children, seeing all the energy they have, and introducing them to reading,” said Cohen. “It’s also an outlet for my creativity.” Broward County’s West Regional Library is located at 8601 West Broward Boulevard. The branches’ Youth Services Information Desk can be reached at 954-765-1585.

Over 500 Locals Will Make Strides to Cure Sarcoma By Jill Sharpe

A

s fall approaches and the air if full of excitement over the

upcoming holidays, more than 500 walkers and runners dedicated to finding a cure for Sarcoma hope to make strides against the soft tissue cancer during the 7th Annual Florida 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure on Sunday, October 19th. Presented by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Miami Health System, the 7th Annual Florida 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure starts at Central Park, 9151 NW Second Street, Plantation, FL 33324 at 7:30 a.m. Race registration opens at 5:45 a.m. Since it was established in 2007, the 7th Annual Florida 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure has raised more than $368,000. All event proceeds benefit the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) and will assist in funding research and increasing awareness of the disease, and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Miami Health System. After the last runner and walker cross the finish line, awards will be presented to the top performers. Nicknamed “Race for Robbie” by the event committee, this year’s 7th Annual Florida 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure sees Robyn “Robbie” Lazear as honorary chairperson. Lazear, owner of sponsor Palm Aluminum & Glass, was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, one of fifty Sarcoma variations, in 2012. In 2014 alone, Lazear has undergone two surgeries. “Right now about 50,000 people and families are

18

battling Sarcoma including myself and my own family,” says Lazear. “I had never heard of Sarcoma until my diagnosis, therefore it is now my mission to not only raise funds but awareness too. I may not be able to find a cure for Sarcoma, but I am able to bring attention to the cause and awareness is power.” Sarcoma affects 1 percent of adults with cancer and 15 percent of children with cancer. Sarcoma can arise in a variety of tissue structures including nerves, muscles, joints, bone, fat and blood vessels. Sarcoma can be cured by surgery in only about 20 percent of cases and by chemotherapy and/or radiation in 30 percent of cases, thus the extreme need for new therapy and research. Approximately 14,000 new cases are diagnosed each year nearly 6,000 people die each year from sarcoma. Sponsors for the 7th Annual Florida 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure include Presenting Sponsor Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Miami Health System, Palm Aluminum & Glass, PGT, The Allergan Foundation, ABB Optical Group, Robinette Homes, Runner’s Depot, and Holman Automotive Group. South Plantation High School Student Receives $5,000 Comcast Scholarship By Jill Sharpe

H

aley K eane , who graduated from

South Plantation High School in June, has been awarded a $5,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship. Keane will be a freshman majoring in creative writing at Florida State University this Fall. Comcast awarded $186,000 in college scholarships to 174 high school students through their Leaders and Achievers Scholarship program for the 2014-2015 school year. The program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community. Keane was one of three exceptional students in Florida selected to receive a $5,000 Comcast scholarship. “The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program is helping Florida’s best and brightest students pursue their dreams and aspirations through

higher education,” said Pam Stewart, Commissioner for the Florida Department of Education. “I appreciate the company’s support as we begin this new school year.” “Keane and the other scholarship winners have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in both the classroom and in their communities and have served as models for their fellow students,” said Derek Cooper, Comcast Florida Region Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Involvement. “We are proud to help support them as they continue their educational journey.” Since the inception of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Program in 2000, more than $21.6 million in scholarships has been awarded to approximately 21,000 deserving students across the country to use toward their pursuit of higher education. To learn more about the Comcast Leaders and Achievers program, visit the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Facebook page.

Former Students Return to American Heritage to Give Retiring Theater Teacher a Farewell Performance By Jill Sharpe

D

uring his 25 years at American H eritage J im U sher built an

award winning Fine Arts Department and was a successful drama director, all the while leaving a lasting impression on literally hundreds of students, many of whom went on to perform on Broadway or moved to New York City or California. On Sunday, June 8th, many of those students came back to honor the man who taught them so well. By performing songs and dances from various productions the school put on over the years, the students brought back many favorite memories for Usher. Nina VanDerhoof, Fine Arts Chair at American Heritage, was responsible for putting together the gala. “It was my desire to take Mr. Usher on a journey that encompassed the body of work that he had created during his tenure at American Heritage,” VanDerhoof said. “The event allowed each of us to demonstrate how proud and honored we were to have been a part of his amazing journey.” One of the alumni who came back to honor Usher with a performance was Lesley Majzlin who graduated in 1994 and was the first theatre scholarship recipient. She sang “Fifty Percent” from the musical “Ballroom”. “He inspired me to grow as a student, performer, and most importantly, as a human being,” she said. Emily Katz, who gave the opening speech at the gala also thanked Usher for believing in her and for always telling her and all his students the truth. “If we were terrible on stage, he told us,” said Katz. “He didn’t sugar coat anything. He treated us like professional actors.” Spencer Perdeck, who just graduated American Heritage and will be attending NYU Tisch, performed “Heroes All Around” from “Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens”, one of Usher’s favorite shows. Perdeck performed in the show at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland last summer for Usher and amazed his teacher. “We did the show years ago and I thought I would never have a student who could play the role of Roscoe as well as my first student had,” said Usher. “Perdeck proved me wrong though as he put his own spin on the character which made me love it even more.” Dana Golaglovanni, who graduated in 2003, came back to sing “The Story Goes On,” a challenging song from the musical “Baby”. Golaglovanni, who has worked professionally for more than 6 years, said Usher gave her the song when she was 16 because he knew she was up for the challenge. “It was an honor to be given that song and that honor alone was reason to come back and sing it for him 13 years later,” she said. Casey McDonald, a rising high school senior, performed a song from “Into The Woods” called “Children Will Listen”. “I had serious doubts about whether I could succeed in Musical Theatre but Usher pushed me to become the best that I could be and gave me confidence that I could really do this,” McDonald said. “It was great to see so many of his former students at the gala, as it was clear how much Usher influenced all of their lives.” Alyssa Fantel, another rising senior who performed “A Summer in Ohio” from “The Last Five Years”, was equally awed by Usher’s amazing legacy. “I think I speak for everyone when I say how lucky we all are to have been a part of something so special during our time at American Heritage.” The school’s founder and president, William Laurie, credited Usher with building the most outstanding visual and performing arts program in the state of Florida. “When he first got here we had our performances in a cafeteria and they were spectacular even then. Since those days, the school has won countless local, district, state and national awards for performing arts and our students perform at Carnegie Hall every year,” Laurie said. Today, students at American Heritage proudly perform in a gorgeous, state of the art 100,000 square foot facility with three performing arts spaces including a main theater of nearly 900 seats. Usher is responsible for every detail of the building as he worked closely with the architect on every aspect. “The building is so well designed that we haven’t had to make any changes,” Laurie said. On the night of the gala, Laurie announced the building would be named the Jim Usher Center for the Arts. “I was overwhelmed,” said Usher. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better than the evening they gave me. To see so many of my students be successful in the careers that I helped them prepare for is the best reward.”

Still Not Saving? You’re Not Alone! By Nancy Rappaport President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

W

Pay yourself first

e all know we need to save more , but we

still don’t actually do it. Why is that? Let’s grab a cup of coffee and discuss ways to start funding our “emergency fund” savings account… Based on a recent survey from Bankrate.com, only 23% of the respondents have the recommended 6 months of living expenses saved. This survey also revealed that 60% of Americans don’t feel comfortable with their current savings position. Many experts say the problem is there’s just not enough money left at the end of the month for savings. This is true no matter how much you make; fewer than half of people with incomes more than $75,000 have that 6-month cushion. Rebecca Kennedy, the founder of Kennedy Financial Planning in Denver, says that after utilities, rent and other expenses, there’s no money left over for savings. It may seem impossible to create an emergency fund, but there are always ways to squeeze a few extra dollars out of each month. Consider these saving tips:

Start small

If you save $5 a week for four years, you’ve got an emergency fund of just over $1,000. That’s a great start to a rainy day fund, and you can do it by giving up one vending machine soda a day. You might also consider a 52-week plan where you save $1 the first week, $2 the second, and so on. At the end of a year; you’ll have saved almost $1,400.

Think about your savings as another bill. Make your savings as important as your house note, car payment, and utility bills.

Automate it

Consider setting up a Club Account or a savings account with direct deposit at your local credit union. You’ll also earn a little bit of interest on your savings to help you on your way.

Put luxury in the back seat

Whether it’s a fancy coffee drink, a fast food meal, or the latest cell phone, things we don’t need will consume much of our income. You don’t need to give up your vices all together. The answer may be to cut back on consumption instead. Go without your Starbucks on Friday or wait 6 months for the price to drop on a gadget. Put the difference into your savings account.

Look at recurring expenses

It may be time to take a look at your monthly bills. Simply giving up a premium movie channel for a year could save you as much as $240. Once you start saving, ask yourself three questions before you take even a dollar out of your emergency fund… Is this purchase absolutely necessary? What can I cut back on this month to pay for it? Do I need it right now? Unless the answer to all of these questions is yes, leave the money where it is. Small Single Portal Knee Arthroscopic Surgery (SPA) By Fernando A. Moya, MD, PhD

A

rthroscopic surgery is the way most S ports

Medicine doctors in the world are able to get inside the joint (like the knee) to fix, repair, clean up and do a debridement of the joint. Patients need arthroscopic surgery because they injured their joint and have injured their cartilage, have loose bodies, or have diseases that do not respond or get better with the classical nonsurgical approach. This is also the most common way we operate patients with ACL ligament tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and intra-articular loose bodies. I must emphasize that a surgical procedure in sports medicine is only needed when the patient has severe problems with the shoulder and knee joint. Most of the time, patients immediately after an injury need to be treated with medication by mouth like antiinflammatory medication, icing of the injured part, elevation of the extremity and immediate rest. If the pain and disability does not go away the patient needs to visit an emergency room or an orthopedic surgeon. Usually x-rays are taken to make sure there is no bone problem like a fracture and a complete physical exam done. Further testing with an MRI scan may be needed in some cases. The purpose of the arthroscopic surgery is to make a patient painless and functional. This new technology has revolutionized medicine and continues to evolve to the point that today I am able to do the arthroscopic surgery doing ONE single small incision. Most surgeons who do arthroscopic surgery need to do two or three small incision poke holes, to do the surgery in that joint. Those extra two or three holes are still needed for other complex surgeries. This new technique uses ONLY ONE small incision and was created as a less intrusive method to operate joints especially the knee joint. Through that one incision I am able to do many of the arthroscopic surgeries commonly done in the knee and I DO NOT need to do two or three small incisions. The most common surgeries that I can do with a single incision portal are surgery for meniscus tear, loose bodies inside the joint, diagnostic arthroscopy, debridement of infection inside the knee joint and synovectomies. Again, more complex surgeries will still require the orthopedic surgeon to use two or three extra holes to do the surgery. The advantages of this single portal arthroscopic surgery has to do with reducing the number of incisions from three or two to just one single incision causing most patients to report less pain, better immediate movement, less swelling of the joint and faster recovery or rehabilitation. This will then allow the patient to start the standard rehabilitation protocol faster to resume activities of daily living like walking, standing and eventually recovering full sport capacity without pain, swelling or locking episodes. In conclusion, single portal knee arthroscopy is a new technique that continues to provide new more effective ways to help the patients go back into an active lifestyle and a the sport they want to play. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Home Decor

Wow! Drapery By Faryal Ali

D

rapery for your home is the final touch to

complete your décor. It is normally the last aspect on interior design that homeowners consider. Daily, I design for clients who have lived for seven years without a single window covering. Some want a minimalistic design for a clean look, while others want layers of fabric to exude luxury and comfort. Whatever your style, we can design it.

▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

What can custom drapery do for you?

The fabric is like art on your windows. Adds texture to the room. Completes the décor by bringing the wall color, furniture and floor together. Enhances the ambiance by adding fabric, which insulates, plus adds dramatic appeal. ▸▸ Complements blinds that have a more straight line look. Drapery allows you to add color when you have neutral blinds. Go crazy. Have fun! Look at the designs we recently installed.

Custom drapery must address the following:

▸▸ Perfect proportion - With 23 years of experience in window coverings, we know what works and what does not. ▸▸ Combine the architectural elements in the room. - The dining room we designed had arches and curved elements. To continue the flow of the architectural elements, we combined swags and arched cornices. Curves in a room are sexy and make for a very comfortable,

elegant feel. With a contemporary design, I focus on more angular designs. ▸▸ Combine fabrics and textures. - We have thousands of fabrics for you to see and touch. This is important, because you want to be comfortable with those fabrics around you. We take the fabrics to your home, so we see how it looks in the natural lighting of your space to ensure that the color and texture are perfect. It is very important to see the fabric in your space. Also, having 1000’s of samples to select from ensures that you get the best possible choice for your home. ▸▸ Add excitement with trim. - Trim is the jewelry. There is simple to ornate. It is the perfect opportunity to bring in a contrast color and add detail that is all about exclusive custom design. ▸▸ Fit your budget. - Custom drapery is available for all budget levels. You need to let your designer know what your budget is and we can design using fabrics that will keep within the limits of your budget. A great look for any window is medallion hung panels. (see dining room picture). It suits any type of décor, from modern to traditional. The best way to know what you are getting is to visit the showroom.
