Treat Your Loved Ones to Magical Memories this Halloween
O
ctober is one of my favorite months of the
year. Florida’s fabulous fall weather is starting, with nighttime temperatures cooling off and the humidity dropping a bit. We can finally get back to enjoying outdoor activities with our families and friends. At the end of the month is Halloween – a favorite holiday of children and kids at heart. What better way to spend some family time than searching for the perfect pumpkin in one of the area’s many pumpkin patches, then rolling up your sleeves to carve a jack-o-lantern? It’s the quintessential Halloween decoration. Soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized princesses and witches, villains and superheroes. Let’s all have some fun while watching our little ones (and big ones too!) roam the neighborhood dressed up as their favorite characters. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, as these are the memories that will last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Teen’s Five-Week Fellowship Opens Doors to Lifetime of Learning By Stacey Bomser
S
ummer school took on a new meaning for L auren Goboff. The American Heritage School senior was one of 26 students awarded a Bronfman Youth Fellowship to participate in an immersive study program in Israel. After spending five weeks traveling throughout Israel, studying with esteemed faculty, and meeting important political and cultural figures, Lauren says it’s impossible to choose just a few highlights from her summer experience. “I think my favorite memories are really just a series of snapshots. I’ll remember attending services with Rabbi Tamar Elad-Appelbaum’s congregation, singing together as if we all had one voice and feeling accepted even though I didn’t know the words to all the prayers. I’ll remember listening to speakers or sitting in a shiur (class) and thinking about how much more there really is to learn. I’ll remember stargazing in the Negev and dancing at Promfman and laughing with my fellow Fellows.” A big part of the program is the collaboration with other American students, as well as Israeli peers. Lauren says it was amazing to meet such a diverse group of intelligent and motivated teens. “It was interesting to learn about our differences,

but I think the most important thing we taught each other is how similar we all can be.” Lauren will get a chance to reconnect with the Bronfman Fellows during two seminars later this year. In the meantime, she is starting to plan her Ma’aseh (social action) project. “All of the Fellows are expected to do something this year that will benefit their communities,” explains Lauren. Although still unsure of what her project will be, Lauren is already actively involved in community service. She is President of the Best Buddies club at her school. She volunteers on Saturdays to help adults with special needs at the Schott Community Center. In the past she has worked at the Dan Marino Center’s summer camp, which serves children with developmental delays. “Working with individuals who have special needs is a passion of mine,” explains Lauren Goboff visited Jerusalem while in Israel with the Bronfman Lauren. “It’s not just community service; I Youth Fellowship program. consider the people I work with my friends. My experiences have taught me that nonverbal does not mean uncommunicative, disability does not equate inability, and that we are all more alike than different. I want to spread awareness and acceptance for the special needs population.” The Bronfman Youth Fellowship program was founded by Edgar M. Bronfman, former CEO of the Seagram Company, Ltd, and a visionary Jewish philanthropist.

Model Train Exhibit Delights Young and Old at Plantation Historical Museum By Jill Sharpe

the club also promotes the “Operation Lifesaver” safety initiative. Operation Lifesaver is a nationwide effort that informs people about the dangers of being near railroad tracks and preventing injuries and fatalities there. FCMTS members have traveled to schools all over Broward County to help educate students and teachers about avoiding hazardous railway tracks and crossings.
he latest exhibit at the
Plantation Historical Museum comes accompanied by the sounds of train whistles and children oohing and aahing. The Florida Citrus Model Train Society (FCMTS) exhibit, which started in July, and runs through October 25th, is showing several train layouts and displays for public viewing. Under the watchful eye of museum fixtures like a full triceratops skeleton, FCMTS members set up and manage train layouts that look little slices of vintage American life. Each model train set features working lights and whistles and detailed background pieces, with virtually all of the work done painstakingly by hand. “We put a lot of detail into these layouts,” said Dr. Ken Sargeant, FCMTS President. “The work is constant and very hands-on.” FCMTS members volunteered untold hours of their time to ensure that they were present to talk with museum visitors and answer their questions. “This is a labor love. Our members come from all walks of life, but the common denominator is our love of trains. My father was a locomotive engineer, so I grew up around them, and always loved trains.” The exhibit showcases model trains in several different scales, with each scale representing a different size train and track. The largest train layout measured at twelve feet by forty feet, and much of the work was modular so that it can be easily taken apart and rearranged. The FCMTS brought their trains back to the museum after a showing there in 2012 brought in large crowds. FCMTS members even brought many of the background sets to life by dressing like characters one would find at that set. For example, members would dress up as a sheriff and sheriff’s deputy and greet the public near the police station set piece on one of the layouts. The exhibit also includes a scavenger hunt where children hunt for clues hidden among the various train layouts. In addition to educating children and families about trains in general,
In addition to their educational endeavors, the FCMTS welcomes anyone who is interested in model trains to their meetings and socials. People of all ages are encouraged to join, and the organization relishes teaching children about the joys of model trains. “I tell parents that our emphasis is getting kids into the hobby. It’s a good, healthy thing that the whole family can do together,” said Sargeant. The group’s next public train displays take place at library branches in Pembroke Pines; with a September visit to the South Regional Library and then a holiday show in December at the Southwest Regional Library. Information about the club can be found at www.fcmts.org. The Plantation Historical Museum’s administrators were glad to see so many people visiting the museum to see the train layout and the museum’s other educational offerings. The train exhibit fit in well with the museum’s mission, as museum Curator John Feeney cited how important railroads have been in the growth of Florida as a state. “When Henry Flagler brought the Florida East Coast Railway to Fort Lauderdale in 1896, he also brought investors, tourists, and business people with him. Some people call him the ‘Father of Florida’s East Coast’ due to how innovative he was.” The train exhibit seems to strike a chord with the museum’s visitors, no matter if they were eight years old or eighty. “The exhibit reminds people of riding trains, or when they had model trains as kids, so people have good memories of them,” said Feeney. “Even if trains have taken a back seat as a common type of transportation, it’s good for kids to see the effects of trains in Florida.” After the model train exhibit ends on October 25th, the museum will be closed to prepare for their popular “Winter Wonderland” exhibit that opens on December 4th. The museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane, and can be reached at 954-797-2722 or online at http://www. plantation.org/Museum/. Admission to the museum is free, although fee-based memberships are available to financially support their educational programs.

Family Owned and Operated Floor Solutions Group Offers Customers Knowledgeable Service, Top of the Line Flooring, and Installation By Jill Sharpe
I
How many members of the family work in the business?
f you are in the market for
new flooring but need some help deciding what the best options are, look no further than Floor Solutions Group. Sales Manager Carlos Almandoz has more than 15 years experience in remodeling with an expertise in flooring installation and bathroom renovations. He knows what works well and what doesn’t work. As a retired flooring renovation specialist, Almandoz has joined with six family members including his daughter Carla to bring the best flooring options to you. Carla recently answered some questions about the newly formed family business.
How long have you been in business and how did you get started? Our office and
showroom have been open since January 2014. One day my cousin Jose decided to tell my father Carlos, that his years of professional installation experience was valuable and worthy of something more. He then went on to convince my father, his uncle, that it was the time in his career to open up a flooring materials store. At the time, Jose was finishing up his Masters at NSU and as his career was in Business Administration he knew that we had a lot to offer to this industry and its customers. As the idea grew, more and more customers and friends convinced my father that opening up a store was a great idea. It was also perfect timing for me too as I was just about to graduate from Florida State with a degree in Marketing. We knew it was the perfect opportunity and time to get this business rolling for our family.
Currently there are seven family members working at Floor Solutions Group.
What can customers expect when they visit your store? We
ers whose workmanship, honesty, and skill are amongst the best we have yet to see. We have had so many customers come to us with terrible stories of their past installers. Its quite sad how many in this business take advantage of their clients. We are not happy until you walk away 100% satisfied with the materials and job we have performed. If you ever have a problem, we will respond at any time of the day any day. For that reason, we use flooring materials that will make your home, office, or commercial store a true masterpiece.
What differentiates Floor Solutions Group from other flooring stores? Because my
father Carlos has been in the business for quite some time now, he knew exactly what materials to use and which ones to stay away from. Here at Floor Solutions we pride ourselves in our high quality materials as we want all of our customers to have the very best the industry has to offer. We also have a team of subcontracted install-

are a family owned and operated business. The service that we give to our clients is that of a family friend or relative. Our showroom is small compared to other flooring materials stores but we designed it that way because we wanted a more personalized, cozy feeling when you walked into our showroom. We also understood the pains of going into a flooring store and seeing so many options. It can truly drive a homeowner crazy. For many homeowners choosing the right materials for their home is crucial. We wanted to make that experience feel like it should, personable and important. Come sit down, drink some coffee, and have a chat with us on what it is that your family needs. You will be surprised to know that you will walk in a customer and leave a friend. That is our goal.
without the hardwood issues. With porcelain tiles you don’t have to worry about your wood absorbing moisture and expanding and you can still have that cozy warm feel that is given by natural wood and laminates.
Anything else you would like readers to know? Please ask
us for referrals. We have many happy clients who would love to show you the materials and work that has been done in their homes, offices, or commercial stores.
What services do you provide?
Personalized consultations, Free at home estimates, and Installation services. We also guide our customers who wish to install their own laminate floors through the process and will answer any question or concern at any time regardless of our business hours.
How have flooring options changed over the years? Over
the past few years we have seen Hardwood turn to Laminate floors and Ceramic into Porcelain tile, 12 X12 ft tiles into 6 X 36 ft tiles, and traditional styles into modern designs. Right now the bigger the better. Flooring has moved away from the square look to an elongated rectangular look that is more sleek and modern. Customers in Florida are also very fond of the Laminate flooring as it is more affordable and less tedious than Hardwood. Lately, 6 X 36 porcelain tiles has become the popular choice for those looking for the wood touch

Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Gears up for the 48th Annual Art in The Park By Jill Sharpe
F
or two days every fall , the Plantation J unior Woman ’ s Club
Foundation presents its annual arts festival in Liberty Tree Park in Plantation, Florida. This year’s event, the 48th ART IN THE PARK, will be held November 8th & 9th, 2014. The theme will be “Fall Into Art,” which is a perfect way to celebrate the season! The festival is community oriented in every way. It is an event the whole city looks forward to. Activities include a student Art Search talent contest for local students, arts and crafts activities in a Kids Korner, and an opportunity for local musicians to perform. This year ART IN THE PARK will feature craft beer, a wide variety of food vendors, and incredible live music. An excellent reputation and tradition and extensive advertising make ART IN THE PARK one of the most popular events in Broward County. Visitors of all ages are attracted to the show. Funds raised by ART IN THE PARK are returned to the community through the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club many projects. In years past, proceeds have gone to local organizations such as the Plantation High School Art Club, Helen B. Hoffman Library, Young at Art Children’s Museum
(benefiting low-income Plantation children), and 4Kids of South Florida (their crisis facility, Safe Place is located in Plantation). Additionally, this event enables the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club to fund scholarships for multiple graduating Plantation area high school seniors. ART IN THE PARK is a unique event as it is organized and operated entirely by volunteers – PJWC members, their families and friends. Community volunteers also come forward to make it great. “We make every effort to attract the public to our festival and provide them with a first class event, said Danielle Durham, Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Publicity Coordinator. “To do this we rely greatly on the generous assistance of our sponsors. This year, our sponsors include Rick Case Automotive Group and the new University of Miami’s U-Health in Plantation.” The Plantation Junior Woman’s Club is always looking for new members that want to help the community. Upcoming meetings are at Deicke Auditorium at 7:30pm on October 15th and November 19th. For more information about ART IN THE PARK or The Plantation Junior Woman’s Club call 954-797-9762

Plantation Novelist Incorporates South Florida Themes and Characters Into Her Popular Books By Jill Sharpe
M
ystery readers across the country are familiar with what
life is like in fictional Palm Haven, Florida although not many know that Palm Haven is really Plantation. It’s all because author Nancy J. Cohen, who lives in Plantation, enjoys her life here and uses what she knows as the basis for her stories “I believe it’s important to write what you know about and I do research on many of the South Florida themes and topics I include in my books,” said Cohen. “Those topics include everything from melanoma detection and child drowning prevention to Tilapia breeding.”
Cohen, who has published more than 20 books, recently released Hanging By A Hair, #11 in her popular Bad Hair Day mystery series featuring South Florida hairstylist Marla Vail. In this latest installment, Marla’s husband argues with the president of their Homeowners’ Association, who is found dead the next day. With her husband implicated in the crime, Marla gets on the trail of a killer that could live close to home. With a cast of eccentric characters including a sassy hairdresser sleuth inspired by a hairdresser Cohen herself went to for many years, this suspenseful story mixed with humor is predicted to be just as much fun to read as Cohen’s previous ten in the series, especially to South Floridian’s who might very well recognize the South Florida scenery Cohen incorporates in the book. Several of Cohen’s Bad Hair Day mystery novels have made the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association bestseller list. Cohen is also the author of a Drift Lord Series based on Norse mythology in a modern setting. Additionally, she is the author of Writing the Cozy Mystery, a valuable instructional guide for mystery writers on how to write a winning whodunit. Cohen’s imaginative romances have proven popular with fans. Her titles in this genre have won the HOLT Medallion and Best Book in Romantic SciFi/Fantasy at the The Romance Reviews. Her newest release is Warrior Lord #3 in the Drift Lords Series from the Wild Rose Press. Although she works 12 hours a day, seven days a week ,the long hours don’t bother Cohen a bit as she just truly loves writing stories. “I feel like I’m serving people by providing a healthy escape from reality,” she said.

Back to School and Back to Taking Care of Yourself By Michele J. Lapayowker, D.O., F.A.C.O.O.G.
I
t ’ s that time of year again when we see school-
supply displays and uniform sales in all of our local stores. Parents run to the dentist for their children’s check-ups and cleanings and to the pediatricians to update vaccines and sports physicals. In late August there was a huge sigh of relief as the kids went “back to school.” Now, what about us? It’s time for the moms, grandmas, sisters, aunts, daughters and girlfriends of every age to get back to work, nutrition and exercise routines and importantly to attend to their health maintenance exams. I use the phrase “health maintenance exam” because the goal of medicine today is prevention of disease and maintaining good health at every age. There are several different recommendations as to when and how often a woman should see her gynecologist. A gynecologist is sometimes the only physician a woman sees and therefore it is imperative that women have an “Annual Gyn” exam. This exam may or may not include a pap test but there are many other areas of health in which a gynecologist can be supportive. An annual exam includes breast exams and learning how to perform self-breast exams, endocrinological evaluations, menstrual cycle pattern evaluations, sleep issues and relationships with partners, to name a few. If a woman skips her “Annual,” many of these issues may remain a mystery and progress until they become an urgent matter. My practice incorporates many different resources for maintaining great health and well-being through the menopausal years. I have studied the field of hormone replacement therapy, along with supplemental and nutritional support. The important thing to remember is that there is a spectrum of effects that menopause has on a woman and a variety of approaches to each woman’s challenge. As a woman proud to have joined the “50” club this year, my vested interest in this area has grown. Even though it may sometimes seem hopeless, there are many options for achieving success. With respect to women of every age and the recommendation for an annual
visit, my passion is equally as strong. I offer women at any stage of life, compassion and thorough evaluations and recommendations whether discussing family planning, bone loss or menopause symptoms. I have an excellent rapport with teens and help them to be comfortable and not apprehensive at their “first” gynecological visit which may merely include a lengthy discussion about the importance of a yearly visit with their gyn and the risks of STDs. This conversation commonly occurs in the later high school years or before they go off to college. They feel empowered by information and the knowledge that many of their feelings and concerns can be addressed. So, as the school year begins and our focus turns to the children, women (no matter their age) should consciously think about their own health maintenance and concerns so that they can be addressed with a sensitive and knowledgeable health care provider with professional and personal experience. Dr. Lapayowker is a Board certified Gynecologist serving women in Broward since 1995. She cares for each patient individually and has a gentle approach to women of all ages. Her Plantation Office is in the Bennett Medical Plaza at 201 NW 82nd Ave, suite 104, Plantation, FL 33324. For more information or to make an appointment, you can phone her office at 954-472-2201 or visit her web site at www.LovelyLadyGyn.com.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and may include chronic muscle pain, painful joints, stiffness, numbness, or tingling. In addition, some may experience tension or migraine headaches, sensitivity to light or smells, and in more severe cases, depression and chronic fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Recent research suggests that changes in the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) may be responsible. As we age, the vertebral joints of the spine begin to degenerate and can press on the roots of the spinal nerves, causing the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia. It can also result from traumatic injuries, infections, diabetes, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins.

What is the Best Age for My Child to See an Orthodontist? By Dr. Michael Maruri
H
ave you noticed more young kids with braces
on these days? Why so young? Don’t they still have baby teeth? When should I take my child to see the orthodontist for the first time? According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the best age for children to be seen by an orthodontist for the first time is seven. Why age seven? What can be done at that age? As you might guess, not every orthodontic problem can be treated at age seven. Surprisingly, however, most problems can be identified by that age. Here are a few things that your orthodontist will look for at your child’s first visit: ▸▸ Crowding and Spacing: By age seven it is possible to tell if a child has a problem with excessive crowding or spacing. Spacing may mean that a baby tooth has been lost prematurely, a tooth never developed, or that the teeth are just too small. Crowding may require that the arches be expanded or that teeth be removed to help improve the situation. ▸▸ Alignment: Although teeth can be aligned at an older age, crooked teeth are more susceptible to uneven wear or damage due to trauma, and the shape and position of the overlying gum tissues can be compromised. Crooked teeth can also have social implications. If they are dealt with at an early age (seven or eight), they will have less impact on a child’s self-esteem. ▸▸ Protrusive Front Teeth: As mentioned earlier, by age seven it is obvious if the front teeth stick out farther than is safe or attractive. Although it is not possible to permanently correct overbites before growth has finished, the orthodontist can help reduce the severity of the problem and make things easier for young patients both dentally and socially while waiting for growth to be complete. ▸▸ Tooth Loss and Eruption: Teeth are lost in a fairly specific order. Deviations from this pattern may indicate that a child has developmental issues that need attention. Between the ages of six and eight, it is normal for a child to lose his first eight primary teeth. Ideally, these eight primary incisors are replaced immediately by eight permanent incisors. It is also normal for the child’s first four permanent molars to emerge at age six (hence the name “six-year molars”). By age seven, children should have at least four permanent molars and four permanent incisors. If there are more or less teeth than this, there may be problems with crowding, missing, or extra teeth. Sometimes removing a primary tooth early or maintaining a space where a tooth has been lost prematurely can prevent bigger problems later on. Dr. Michael Maruri recommends screening ALL young patients at age seven so that these and other conditions can be identified and corrected as early as possible. Although some may be able to wait until all the permanent teeth are in, interceptive treatment can make the final results faster, better, and give your children an additional three to four years of having a great smile at an age when their self-image is developing. If you have a child who is seven or older, call Plantation Orthodontist Dr. Michael Maruri at 954- 4736900 for your free consultation. After school and weekend appointments are available. The office is located behind the Fountains Shoppes at 815 S University Drive, Suite 100 in Plantation.

Get to Know Your Local Credit Union By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
L
ooking for the best checking account rates?
How about lowering your car payment? This is a great time to get to know your local credit unions. Let’s get a fresh cup of coffee and discuss the credit union difference… What makes a credit union different from other financial institutions? Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983. How can I become a credit union member? Many people believe they are not eligible to join a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee. Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to
become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member, even if you move away. Is my money safe in a credit union? Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00. Credit Unions seem to have limited locations… Over 5,005 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear. Technology? Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system. If you prefer personal assistance with your finances, credit unions continue to offer professional and knowledgeable staff that will be happy to assist you. For more information, please give us a call at 954-335-5100; visit our website at www.priorityonefl.org or stop by one of our branches conveniently located in Sunrise, at 3000 North University Drive; in Fort Lauderdale, at 1900 West Oakland Park Boulevard (in the Post Office building)or Coral Springs at 1700 North University Drive; Suite 100. Habitual Toe Walkers By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

t the beginning of independent walking , tod -
dlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause to the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common among boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary. Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active. Casts are applied every ten to fourteen days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility. In some cases the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm. Skylar is a two-year-old Tabby. Her favorite person is her mommy followed by whoever gives her treats. Her favorite toy is anything shiny with a tail that moves. She likes salmon flavored food, treats, cat nip, sleeping, and rubbing her head on any hard surface. She dislikes vacuum cleaners, blow dryers and being sprayed with water when she is a bad girl. Her favorite thing to do is to sit on window sills watching all her friends fly, crawl and jump by outside. She was last seen trying to figure out how to get inside the fish tank.
