A Halloween Treat!
T
he memories of summer vacations have slowly faded away. The kids have settled back into their regular school routine, and that typically means mom and dad busy shuttling them around to after school activities. Sports season is in full swing and, thankfully, the heat and humidity are dropping a bit. Finally, we can enjoy family activities and gatherings with friends in our backyards again. These cooler nights signal fall has arrived in South Florida, and that means Halloween is almost here. It’s time to decorate the house with “scary” lights to brighten the spirits of our little ones (and sometimes not so little ones). Let’s have some fun while watching the neighborhood kids roam the streets dressed up in costumes. Be sure to have your camera ready to take some pictures of your children enjoying the trick-or-treating tradition. These are the memories that last a lifetime.

A new chapter in cancer care is here.
Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Breast Tomosynthesis
Cassann Blake, MD Breast Surgeon
Maria Artze, MD Radiologist
Regular screening mammograms, which create twodimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates three-dimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.” The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.”
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.

For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.”

Local Author Publishes Halloween-Themed Children’s Book about Bullying BY JILL SHARPE
Don the goat and Bucky the bat are two characters in the Pumpkin Family book.
The hardcover version of the book can be displayed as a Halloween decoration.
T
R Durphy, co-owner of Plantation based BLUEDOG - School of Acting for Kids, has just published his first book called The Pumpkin Family. The book, written for kids ages 6 and up, tells a wonderful Halloween story that addresses the issues of bullying, differences, acceptance and friendship. Durphy, who said he himself was bullied as a kid, decided to write the book after working with thousands of children as an acting coach for many years in South Florida. “I came to realize that bullying towards many of the kids I work with was a major issue,” said Durphy. “My book gave me a TR Durphy in his office at platform to explore this horrible situation BLUEDOG - School of Acting for Kids. that happens every day to millions of kids Prior to opening BLUEDOG Durphy was a casting director in Los Angeles and by teaching them that bullying is not o.k., in Miami. He is also an actor and has been any form. “ working as one since he was a child. The Pumpkin Family is the story of 10 pumpkins that are raised on a farm with the hope of being taken home by children in the big city for Halloween. The Pumpkin Family themselves start out bullying only to face a valuable lesson as they get bullied as well later in the story. Durphy said The Pumpkin Family is very much like the members of every family, perfect in their own unique way but maybe not so perfect to others.

OCTOBER 2015 | OUR CITY PLANTATION
“I was inspired to write the book by my mother who used to write little two to three page books for my brother and I whenever we would face any childhood issue,” said Durphy. “Once I picked up a fumbled football and ran it all the way to the end zone for a touchdown. The problem was I ran the wrong direction causing the other team to win. You can imagine the bullying I got from that.” The Pumpkin Family book has been in the works for several years as Durphy thoroughly researched the topic of bullying and made sure he was on target by conducting focus groups with children and professionals in the business. As a first time author, his favorite part of the book is how he introduced the issue of bullying in different ways throughout the book. For example, he used a green pumpkin to address the issue of bullying based on skin color. “The purpose was to illustrate that a person’s skin color is never really the issue. The issue is the way that people use skin color to directly attack others.” Other characters in the book include Don the Goat and Bucky the Bat. Don the Goat, a happy goat with dreadlocks, is inspired by Durphy’s oldest friend whose name is Don. The character Don the Goat is alone in the world and just does not know how to make friends. Bucky the Bat is purple, acts very shy and has no friends. Durphy said he believes that acceptance of all children by children must start by proper teaching in the home by the parents from day one. When asked what he hopes children will learn from reading the book, Durphy said “treating others with kindness should be the only tolerated behavior from everyone.” The Pumpkin Family by TR Durphy is available on Amazon.com. The hardcover version is $22.95, the paperback version is $14.99 and the kindle version is $9.99.

Plantation Girl Scout Troop Supports Local Foster Care Youth BY JILL SHARPE
G
irl Scout Junior Troop 10274 from Plantation recently gathered at the new ChildNet headquarters in Fort Lauderdale to finalize a year-long project dedicated to local foster care youth. As the lead Community Based Care Lead Agency in Broward and Palm Beach counties, ChildNet provides for the basic needs of the community’s most vulnerable population. These Girl Scouts assisted in designing the lobby of ChildNet’s new Broward office and helped supplement the essentials needed by children in foster care. They provided children’s books and duffel bags filled with the basic necessities specifically for those children who are removed from their homes on short notice. Troop Leader Zaida Alvarez and the girls in her troop have been working on the project with ChildNet in an effort to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award. “As a troop, we were very interested in finding a way to connect with our local community,” said Alvarez. “After reading many stories of the incredible foster parents and brave children finding forever families, we knew we had found our connection with ChildNet and a project close to our hearts.” Part of the project design included wall art that featured eight portraits of children currently available for adoption in Broward and Palm Beach County, centered around a wood art piece engraved with the message to visitors to let their “hearts be unraveled.” At press time there are nearly 187 children available for adoption in Broward and Palm Beach County. The number of children in the child welfare system in the state has risen to its highest level since 2008. “The girls have put more than 20 hours of work into this collaboration,” said Alvarez. “We are incredibly grateful to ChildNet for letting us into their new home and providing insight into the lives of our most vulnerable population.” For more information about ChildNet, call 954-484-6000 or visit www.ChildNet.us and www.facebook.com/ChildNet.

to thousands residents in Broward County. VITAS Healthcare provides patients and their families with compassionate and high quality hospice care and palliative services to ensure comfort and the preservation of dignity in face of terminal illness. VITAS recently presented a check for $15,000 to support GJFS programs, such as GJFS’s ongoing series of Café Europa lunches. Café Europa is a program that allows Holocaust survivors to gather, meet, mingle and bond with one another. Earlier this year VITAS was the presenting sponsor of GJFS’s film screening, “Secret Lives: Hidden Children and Their Rescuers During WWII,” which tells the inspirational stories of children who were saved by non-Jews in extraordinary acts of bravery. “We are deeply grateful to VITAS Healthcare for its remarkable generosity and its understanding of our mission to improve the lives of so many people in our community,” said Jacob Schreiber, CEO of Goodman JFS of Broward. “With the support of companies like VITAS, we know we can make a positive impact on many individuals and families.” “VITAS Healthcare has been a long-standing supporter of Goodman JFS and we are proud to solidify our partnership even further in order to strengthen our

community,” said Donna Borland, VITAS Healthcare general manager of Broward County. “Our relationship with Goodman JFS is testament to VITAS’ commitment to empowering individuals and families, and supporting our local community here in Broward County.” According to Esther Cohen, Jewish Community liaison for VITAS Healthcare, the synergies between the two organizations are very strong, and it made perfect sense to support Goodman JFS. “At VITAS, we understand the needs of the community and share a similar vision with GJFS,” she said. “My goal is to improve the understanding of hospice services and the choices available to everyone in Broward County. As the Jewish Community liaison, I know we can achieve this by partnering with GJFS and working together for a common objective.” Goodman JFS is committed to helping the residents of Broward County with life’s hardest challenges, regardless of religion, race, income or status. The organization provides life-sustaining programs including mental health counseling, emergency financial assistance, care for seniors, support for children and scores of other important services that improve the lives of the community.

Former Foster Child Uses Her Talent To Spread An Important Message BY JILL SHARPE

P
lantation teen Gabriella Stroup, a local singer, dancer, actor and community activist was recently selected as one of 11 Young Stars to perform at the 6th annual AT&T Young Stars Showcase at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on November 15th. Each year, the Young Stars Showcase features extraordinary young singers from throughout South Florida, some who have already achieved stardom and others who go on from this event to success in the national spotlight. Bella Stroup, also known as Bella Heart, has been in the spotlight since she was eighteen months old when she spoke to a group of 400 at the Children’s Home Society’s 2nd Annual HTLA luncheon. As a former foster child herself, she has become the organizations most recognizable young spokeswoman, and has helped to raise thousands of dollars for the organization that means so much to her. Bella was adopted through the dependency system when she was a toddler. The Stroup family then adopted her brother Michael a few years later. “I hope to change how people think about foster care,” said Bella. “I want to show that children who have been through the foster care system are capable of achieving great things as long as people foster, volunteer and donate so that kids get the safety, support and love they need to succeed.” Bella spreads that message wherever she goes. When she was just eleven, she had a solo performance on the steps of Florida’s Capitol Building for Children’s Week, an event bringing thousand to Tallahassee to focus on issues facing Florida’s children. Julie Schneider, Executive Director of the Children’s Home Society of Florida, said she could not be more thankful for Bella’s support and dedication to our mission and the huge impact she has had on our fundraising and marketing efforts.” “Bella has spoken and performed at five of our luncheon’s and this year we were able to raise over $120,000, the most we have ever raised at a single event. Bella’s performance and speech at for the Children’s Home Society. She has performed in several musical theater productions, debuted her first commercially available song in 2013 and has appeared at county fairs and events across Florida. Bella has been recognized for her accomplishments with awards that include the title of Miss Miami Dade’s Outstanding Teen 2015, a nomination for the position of Junior Captain of the 2012 Seminal Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade and a scholarship from Starlet Performing Arts Foundation to continue her training. She also appeared in a film and as the youngest cast member in “Madeleine’s Christmas” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Additionally, Bella is a vocalist on iTunes. When not on stage, Bella is a middle school student at Nova Southeastern University School where she is an English Honors Student and is on the schools cross country team. An aspiring TV news anchor, Bella loves to write journals, stories and songs. She recorded a solo with Tunes-for-Tots which will benefit children’s charities and recently performed at a charity luncheon for Gilda’s Club Cancer Support Society with professional Broadway performers. As if all that were not enough, Bella said she enjoys being a leader among her peers. “My friends come to me with their problems and I try to solve them,” she said.
the event was integral to the events success as she is an inspiration not only to our guests but also to every staff member here that is working hard so that we may share even more success stories like hers with the community.” Bella’s accomplishments extend far beyond her supportive performances

Plantation Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday on the Tennis Court BY JILL SHARPE
C
ake and cookies may not seem like typical morning fare but August 27th was no typical morning at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation. Friends gathered there to celebrate Sal Esposito’s 100th birthday over mimosas and birthday cake. People streamed into the clubhouse to shake Esposito’s hand and wish him a happy birthday. Afterward, the party moved to the tennis courts as the sport has been a central part of Esposito’s life since he started playing upon moving to Plantation in 1980. While he loves playing the game, the fellowship among the friends there is more important than scores or competition. “He’s an inspiration to everyone,” said friend Roberta Block. “He’s a fabulous person, caring and wonderful on the court. He has patience with the younger players and gives them good tips. My sister was visiting from New Jersey and he gave her some excellent pointers. She went back to Jersey and beat everyone there.”

Esposito took the day in stride, not getting caught up in the attention of his 100th birthday and instead just enjoying time with his family and friends on the tennis courts. “I love everything about tennis; the people you’re with, and I enjoy getting exercise,” he said. “I feel fine, I keep busy all the time. I go to the pool every morning and walk in the pool for 20 minutes every day. I use the whirlpool, go to the hobby shop, and play bridge and computer games.” Esposito is part of the Lauderdale West senior community hobby shop where he and his neighbors make close to 300 wooden toys each year to donate to the Plantation Historical Society during the winter holidays. On his 98th birthday, Esposito received a Key to the City of Plantation in recognition of his ongoing community service. Esposito said he has always had a knack for creating things with his own hands. “I even made a rocking chair for my greatgranddaughter from scratch,” he said. Esposito retired at age 62 after spending 45 years as a tool and dye maker in Manhattan.. On the morning of his birthday celebration Esposito was happy to be on center court serving and returning volleys in a doubles match with his friends. His children, Dr. Claudia Draizin and Phil Esposito, looked on happily. “I think my dad’s secret to longevity is his positive attitude,” said Dr. Draizin. He doesn’t let anything bother him. He just puts the past behind him.” The Frank Veltri Tennis Center is part of Plantation’s Central Park and is located at 9101 NW Second Street. They can be reached at 954-452-2530 or online at www.plantationtennis.org.

Retired Band Director Continues to Share His Love of Music BY JILL SHARPE
A
t 86-years-old, Don Bradley is still in his element when standing in front of a roomful of music students, regardless of their age. “It’s what I was put on this earth to do,” the Covenant Village of Florida resident said. “Play music and teach.” Equipped with homemade wooden instruments and tin cans, a dozen fellow residents followed Bradley’s lead during his Circle of Rhythm music class learning rhythmical exercises and practicing sounds and hand/stick techniques. The retired band director clearly hasn’t lost his touch. Bradley spent 30 years as a high school band director and still plays the trombone with the Broward Symphonic Band. He’s played with several local jazz bands – he has mastered all of the brass instruments – and up until 2014 he visited South Florida schools as a musical consultant. Before retiring, he was band director for McArthur High School, Hollywood, Fla. This past spring, Bradley decided to step back into his teaching role, but this time with students his own age and with instruments created using his own hands. “I’m quite handy in the community’s woodshop, so I bought some wood from Home Depot, went to work and made some instruments that would produce different types of sounds,” he explained. He sawed and sanded pieces of new wood and pieces from broken tools to create clappers, sticks, and other percussion instruments. He gathered donations of various sized tin cans from the community’s dining room staff to use as drums. The Circle of Rhythm class meets twice a month. Most residents are novice

musicians who are learning to read notes and find their musical rhythm for the first time. One or two are former piano and guitar players who sing in the Covenant Village choir. Nearly all of them attended the class first out of curiosity and came back for the fun. Resident-initiated projects like Bradley’s are commonplace at Covenant Village, said Shauna Monahan, the community’s Resident Services Director. “The LifeConnect™ partnership we have with our residents means my door is always open to talk about new ideas and projects. Anyone can start a class, coordinate programming or spearhead a project. Residents tell us what they want and we work with them to make it happen.” LifeConnect™ at Covenant Village creates opportunities for individuals to pursue whole-person wellness so they remain vital members of the community. Opportunities include educational and cultural programming, spiritual enrichment, creative arts and volunteer outreach. For more information call 877-318-1458 or visit www.CovenantFlorida.org

Loans from Credit Unions Offer Distinct Advantages ASK THE EXPERT
BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION
S
tart your day strong with a delicious cup of fresh brewed coffee and some credit union facts.... Since 1844, credit unions have been known for their great savings and now free checking accounts. However, did you know they offer an array of competitive loan products as well? Whether for a car, a mortgage or a home remodel, personal loan or a credit card, chances are you’ll be shopping for a loan at some point. It can be overwhelming. However, knowing the advantages of a credit union loan verses a bank loan can help you make the right decision. If you’ve never used a credit union, you may think they’re the same as banks...not so! Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by their members. Profits are distributed to members instead of shareholders. This fact makes all the difference...profits are returned to the members in the form of competitive interest rates on depository accounts and loans.
What are some of the advantages of getting a loan through a credit union?
▸▸ Competitive interest rates-Lower loan rates mean lower monthly payments and less interest paid over the term of the loan ▸▸ Convenience-Apply online, in person or over the phone ▸▸ Fast loan approvals-Local underwriting and processing of loans ▸▸ Common sense approach-You are not just a credit score ▸▸ Flexible loan terms ▸▸ Lower processing fees than banks ▸▸ Excellent member service Many credit unions offer a free auto buying/leasing service to their members. This free service allows credit union members to shop for their dream car without
visiting a car dealership! All the hassle and some of the fees are eliminated! It’s simple...you get pre-approved for the auto loan at your credit union, let the car buying/leasing service know exactly what you are looking for, then just sit back and relax. You are in good hands while the service finds the auto for you, negotiate the best deal and deliver it to you at your convenience.
Can I refinance my car loan at a credit union?
Yes, credit unions offer competitive rates, flexible refinancing terms and low processing fees. Refinancing your existing auto loan at a credit union can possibly save you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Whatever your reason, your local Credit Union has money to lend and a helping hand to make your dreams come true!! For more information about credit unions please call us at 954335-5100; visit our website at www.priorityonefl.org or stop by one of our branches conveniently located in Sunrise, at 3000 North University Drive; in Fort Lauderdale, at 1900 West Oakland Park Boulevard; or Coral Springs at 1700 North University Drive; Suite 100.
