Happy Thanksgiving
W
ith the Halloween sugar rush slowly wearing off and the holiday season upon us, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of our kids growing up and becoming young adults, of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this month with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a traditional Thanksgiving feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. This holiday season, reach out to your friends, neighbors, co-workers and the less fortunate. Consider opening your heart (and maybe your wallet) to help to provide a holiday meal for those in need.

Goodman JFS of Broward Presents KOLOT Chai Tea Community news
BY JILL SHARPE
G
oodman Jewish Family Services (GJFS) KOLOT Coalition will hold a unique event called Chai Tea on Sunday, November 15 at the Renaissance Hotel in Plantation. KOLOT, which means “voices” in Hebrew, is encouraging the community to come together to attend the event and lend their voices to help end domestic abuse in the Jewish Community. The event is part of an ongoing campaign to engage people of all ages as allies in ending all forms of domestic abuse. Chai Tea – chai means “life” in Hebrew – will focus on recognizing the signs of abuse and taking the right steps toward a solution. Chai Tea, with scones and jam – much like a British high tea – begins at 10:00 a.m. with a shopping boutique offering lovely gift items and fashion accessories, as well as a silent auction and raffle prizes. A powerful program with lunch will begin at 11:45 a.m. Domestic abuse is often a subject that many people don’t address. KOLOT urges people to stand up and speak out against domestic violence. The event is co-chaired by two longtime GJFS supporters, Lynn Bell and Anne Sopshin. Radio personality Mindy Baer will serve as the emcee. “We are hearing more and more about domestic violence, as people across the country recognize how this issue has grown to epidemic proportions,” said Lynn Bell, event co-chair. “It can impact everyone, from the rich and famous to your next-door neighbor. KOLOT is dedicated to raising awareness and seeking solutions so that no woman will ever fear for her life within her own home.” “Domestic abuse is one of the most insidious maladies to the shalom bayit of the Jewish family and community,” says Goodman JFS CEO Jacob Schreiber. “We are committed to helping the victims of this crime find shelter, live without fear and rebuild their lives. If you know anyone who may be suffering in silence please

have them turn to us for help and support.” For nearly 20 years, Verizon has supported domestic violence and prevention efforts through its HopeLine program, which turns no-longer used phones and accessories into vital resources for domestic violence survivors. Investing in organizations that provide education, prevention, care for victims and empowerment resources in local communities, Verizon’s HopeLine has donated hundreds of thousands of phones and awarded millions of dollars in cash grants to non-profit organizations and agencies. For more information on HopeLine, visit VerizonWireless.com/HopeLine. “Domestic violence is everyone’s business,” said Nicole Gavin, Florida region public relations manager for Verizon Wireless. “We are honored to help organizations that aim to empower survivors and prevent domestic violence.” Attendees are asked to bring their old wireless phones to the event, regardless of the condition or service provider. Additional corporate sponsors include Alternative, Comerica Bank, Ernst & Young, OPI and GBS. Ticket price is $85 per person or $118 with 25 raffle tickets; $36 for children 13 and younger. Proceeds from this event will benefit those seeking services from the GJFS Domestic Abuse Program, including the 24/7 Crisis Line, counseling, case management, support groups, and financial assistance. KOLOT projects include Teen Relationship Project, Connect Cards, Outreach, Education and the Men’s Initiative. Sponsorships are still available. For more information, contact Development Officer Jennifer Cohen at 954-370-2140 x 248.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Plantation Law Office Jumps Into Firm’s Initiative to Give Back to the Community It Serves BY JILL SHARPE
K
elley Kronenberg, a national full-service law firm with an office in Plantation, recently launched a firm-wide program to give back to the communities it serves. This new initiative, Kelley Kronenberg Cares (KKC) provides opportunities for the firm’s attorneys and staff to personally commit to civic and charitable efforts in the cities where the firm’s offices are located. The first KKC project was for each office to collect school supplies to donate to a school or school organization in their respective communities. The effort was a huge success in Plantation. “Our Kelley Kronenberg team fully embraced the idea of serving our community and helping local students in need,” said Shanon Lazarus Webster, an attorney and Marketing and Business Development Manager for the firm who along with firm CMO Thomas Choberka led the supplies collection efforts for the firm’s Plantation office. “Dozens of our partners, attorneys and staff members collected school supplies for our August drive and, by the end of the month, the amount that we had collected to donate to the Broward Education Foundation greatly surpassed our expectations,” Webster said. “As a law firm, we recognize that literacy and solid education are some of the
most important life skills needed to succeed in our society,” said Kelly Kronenberg, CFO Health Eskalyo, who directs the firm’s philanthropic efforts. “A child’s access to books and the materials needed to learn is imperative to his or her success. Our efforts in this initiative show that Kelly Kronenberg is dedicated to providing students across Florida with the access to these school supplies.” The school supply drive was just one charitable endeavor of many to come. In addition to the firm’s regular philanthropic work, the KKC program will host a Thanksgiving Food Drive, followed by a Toys for Tots donation campaign, and a Girl Scout Cookies for Overseas Troops initiative. “While the firm has always been a steady supporter of our attorneys’ and staffs’ individual community and charitable efforts, KKC will solidify that commitment to support our neighbors,” said Eskalyo. “As members of the community it is our responsibility to do something positive to make a difference. The school supply drive gave the individual members of Kelly Kronenberg the opportunity to rally together and unite as a firm to bring these much needed school supplies to local children. We sincerely hope that the donated supplies will help young students as they embark on the new school year.”

Plantation Author Launches Her Second Novel BY JILL SHARPE
N
SECTION HEAD Community News
orma Jennings, who heralds from Plantation, recently unveiled her latest book, Passenger from Greece. In a classic tale of love, lust and criminal behavior, Passenger from Greece explores the controversial and menacing issue of illegal drugs being moved from more developed countries in the U.S., while using the Caribbean as a conduit. The novel’s main character, Olivia Reid, is a young, feisty, yet innocent international flight attendant from the islands, who embarks on a dangerous adventure, and a seductive affair that spans the Caribbean, New York City and Crete. Eventually, as the flames of desire that consume Olivia are fanned by deception, lust and greed, she painfully finds her way back from a terrifying abyss. When asked what inspired her to write Passenger from Greece, Jennings said an article she read in the Huffington Post sparked her interest in the rising tide of drug cartels in developed countries that use certain Caribbean islands as conduits for the movement of illegal drugs into the United States. “As I am originally from Jamaica and am a former flight attendant, I began to think about how I could bring this international and social dilemma into the spotlight, and also draw readers in with a captivating story,” Jennings said. Passenger from Greece is Jennings second book. Her first book, Daughters of the Caribbean,
taught her a lot about the likes and dislikes of American and international audiences. “I learned how successful novels are configured to capture and hold the audience,” Jennings said. Both books center around family and relationships. While Passenger from Greece is at its basis a cautionary tale about love-gone-wrong, it also touches on deception at the deepest family level. It explores how familial relationships, flawed characters, secrets and lies can destroy lives and create deeply felt wounds that go straight to the heart. “Having been born and raised in the Caribbean, certain standards dictate that you should love your family unconditionally, show strength under fire, trust until you’re given reason not to, be thankful for what you have because there is so much hunger in the world, and never let anyone see your sweat,” Jennings said. “I focus on family and relationships in my books because I believe that they are the fuel that shapes our characters and drive us to make decisions.” Passenger from Greece is available on Amazon and the 3L Publishing website, www.3LPublishing.com. It is also available in select bookstores. The eBook version is available in Kindle, Nook and iBook.

A new chapter in cancer care is here.
Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer, secondhand smoke, exposure to toxins, or a family history of lung cancer can also trigger the disease.
Bruno Bastos, MD
Cleveland Clinic Florida
Oncologist There is a false perception that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke, so lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as those with other types of cancer.
“There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Patients who have stopped smoking are still at an increased risk for lung cancer long before they receive a lung cancer diagnosis. “Additionally, the fact is that anyone can be exposed to toxins and develop lung cancer, so this is a disease that should concern everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has had a negative effect on lung cancer research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.

“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to tell their stories.” Despite the lack of funding for research, there has been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” Dr. Bastos said. “Genetic testing has helped researchers to develop therapies that target specific types of cancer cells.” Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, also are showing potential for treating lung cancer, Dr. Bastos said. These therapies already have been approved for treating skin cancer. Development of screening tools such as CT scans help with early identification of lung cancer, too, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

The Road to Recovery Starts with A Bridge to Growth Feature Story
By Stacey Bomser
A
ddiction affects the individual and the family. A Bridge to Growth helps clients deal directly with the underlying psychological and emotional issues behind the addiction using a variety of modalities including intensive group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, art therapy, adventure therapy and spirituality. It provides inpatient, intensive outpatient, and outpatient services to individuals struggling with maladaptive behaviors such as alcoholism, drug dependence, and addictive disorders, as well as affective disorders including, but not limited to, chronic depression, anxiety and trauma.
What is your treatment methodology? Our motto
is, “We treat the what; we treat the why.” Alcoholism and drug dependency are not conditions unto themselves. We believe that the reason someone uses maladaptive behaviors is just as or more important than what they actually use to avoid feeling. Our program includes evidence-based treatment methods for the co-occuring issues that present themselves with addictions including, but not limited to, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and trauma.

Engineering Students at South Plantation High Build, Maintain and Race Their Own Solar Vehicle BY JILL SHARPE
School News 18
S
outh Plantation High School’s (SPHS) students learn the “3 R’s” but a group on campus has been specializing in another R: racing. And not just any type of racing, but building and maintaining a solar-powered car they race in national competitions. The eleven students who make up the Solar Knights are seeking community support and donations to ensure the team’s continued success. The preeminent event in high school solar car racing is the Solar Car Challenge, a competition where SPHS came in third place in 2015 and claimed the national title in 2011. Preparations for the 2016 Solar Car Challenge have already begun in the group’s workshop. Several in the group stay in the SPHS Engineering Technology building after the last school bell rings to continue working on the “Solar Knight 3” or “SK3”, the third generation vehicle that the group has built. The SK3 is powered by roughly 400 semi-flexible solar cells that combine for an output of 1200 watts total. The car’s chassis weighs about 350 pounds without the battery and can reach a top speed of nearly 80 miles per hour, close to record speed for a high school-built car. Everything about the SK3 has been fabricated in-house, including a custom steering mechanism involving a pulley system in order to save space. The car lacks sideview mirrors in order to reduce drag but there is a rearview camera with a digital camera so that the driver can see behind them as well as provide a live video feed. The vehicle’s unique teardrop shape is intentional, a design element to ensure it is as aerodynamic as possible. This has clearly been a labor of love for all of the students involved. “We’ve put thousands of work hours into the SK3, and it’s all brand new, really top of the class,” said Jasen Hunt, a team co-captain, “Every year we take it apart and we work year-round. Even this summer, I was at school 24/7 and there were a lot of Home Depot trips. It’s a lot of fun and very rewarding to see your best car out there. The challenge is building something for our needs when there is nothing like it around.”
NOVEMBER 2015 | OUR CITY PLANTATION
The SK3 is made up of composite carbon fiber, a safety feature that was tested during their trials at the last Solar Car Challenge. Solar Knights co-captain Michael Rogatinsky crashed the car into a wall while going 35 mph but he was unharmed and the car sustained minimal damage. The experience has not dampened Rogatinsky’s enthusiasm for their work. “I’m into electrical engineering and design,” he said. “This has been a great experience and a great way to try out new skills I’ve learned.” Those skills will be tested at the 2016 Solar Car Challenge, a race that will begin over the summer at the Texas Motor Speedway and consist of a interstate convoy that ends in Minnesota. The Solar Knights are hard at work adjusting the SK3’s lights, turning radius and visibility in order for the vehicle to be street legal. “We’re real dedicated kids that are into something we love,” said Hunt. “We do some really great things, get hands-on experience and work with a lot of people in the field. You’re dealing with an advanced car and we have to do some advanced work on it.” When they are not toiling in the school’s workshop, the students and their parents are busy raising the funds it will take to participate in the next competition. Travel expenses are estimated to be around $25,000 with roughly $10,000 already secured in commitments from local businesses. Team members even had a chance meeting with racing legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Key West where Earnhardt pledged to help them raise money. The Solar Knights are a non-profit organization that relies on community support as they receive no funding from the School Board. Businesses that wish to sponsor the group will be recognized for their help with signage placed on the solar car itself and on the group’s banners. Donations can be made by contacting their Parent Coordinator, Janna Hunt at 954.829.4868, hunthaus@ comcast.net or via the group’s website at http://solarknightsracing.org/.

Electronic Voting Available to Community Associations
E
lectronic voting has now been authorized by our legislature, and stands to provide significant benefits for Florida community associations. Now, the possibility exists that associations previously unable to obtain a quorum for the election of directors, or to obtain sufficient votes to waive reserves or adopt amendments, will be able to do so by means of internet based voting. However, as wonderful as it will be to finally have a means to overcome the once almost insurmountable challenge of obtaining a quorum, the implementation and practical application of electronic voting will not be without obstacles. For example, for those associations that utilize voting certificates and customarily verify a voter’s qualification to cast a ballot at a physical meeting, new procedures will have to be adopted to ensure that the person casting an electronic ballot is the person authorized to cast a ballot for the unit. Also, what will the effect of electronic voting be for those associations whose unit owners vote by proxy? Currently, the electronic voting statutes do not address voting by proxy. The mere fact that a unit owner may vote electronically would seem to indicate that a dual system of voting will have to exist within associations: one system for unit owners to vote electronically; and the other a system of manual (i.e. traditional) voting where unit owner and/or their proxy holders can appear at a meeting and cast their ballots. And then there are recalls. The electronic voting statutes are said to apply to unit owner votes and the election of directors. Recalls are accomplished either at a special membership meeting, or by written ballot, where a majority of the voting members of an association must vote in favor of the recall of one or more directors. Arguably, then, the recall of an association’s directors could be accomplished by the use of electronic voting. Leading us to tackle the practical implementation of the electronic voting statutes. While there is no statutory requirement that a commercial internet service be utilized to conduct an electronic vote, any online voting system that is utilized must, among other things: be able to authenticate the unit owner’s identity; be able to authenticate the validity of each electronic vote to ensure that the vote is not altered in transit; and be able to transmit a receipt from the online voting system to each unit owner who casts an electronic vote. Because of these requirements, it is somewhat impractical to expect that associations will come up with their own systems of electronic internet based voting. Instead, they will rely on commercial internet voting service providers, and presently, there are few that appear equipped to meet the statutory electronic voting requirements. Consequently, associations desiring to utilize electronic online voting run the risk that the voting service that they choose will not meet the statutory requirements, and that any vote conducted electronically will be subject to challenge. Michael E. Chapnick is a partner with the Coral Gables-based law firm of Siegfried, Rivera, Hyman, Lerner, De La Torre, Mars & Sobel, P.A. who has focused on community association law since 1996. He is based at the firm’s office in West Palm Beach, and the firm focuses on community association law and represents more than 800 associations throughout Florida. Baby is a an eight-year-old Maltese. His mom Alejandra is his favorite person as she adopted him after he was dumped at a shelter six months ago. Baby follows Alejandra around wherever she goes. He enjoys car rides sitting in his mom’s lap and taking long naps in bed with her. Baby does not like when Alejandra leaves him at home to go to work. His favorite toy is a plush monkey that makes noise when he bites down on it. He was last seen taking a walk with his mom before bedtime.
