Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer

Bruno Bastos, MD

Cleveland Clinic Florida Oncologist

If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause, there are other factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma

A false perception is prevalent in society today, that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control

show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure. “Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.” Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos. There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smoke-free increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. Lung Cancer: Novel Targeted Immunotherapy Cancer cells are not like normal cells, in that they rapidly divide and frequently mutate or change in order to evade the immune system. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that stimulates the body’s immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. A new investigational research trial, called CheckMate, is now being offered in select sites across the country to patients with advanced lung cancer. “This trial involves a new immunotherapy approach that specifically activates the immune system to fight lung cancer tumor cells, without harming healthy tissue,” according to Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist, Bruno Bastos, MD. Cleveland Clinic Florida has been designated the first academic medical center in the region to participate in this cutting-edge immunotherapy trial. Dr. Bastos states, “We are pleased to now offer this treatment to patients with advanced lung cancer.”

Decrease your Risk Even though you can develop the disease without having ever been a smoker, if you are someone

The Other November Day to Give Thanks

M

ost Americans gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks and enjoy a wonderful meal. This great tradition dates back to pilgrims and Native Americans eating wild turkey in New England, or so the story goes. There is another day in November, however, when we should all give thanks as well. On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. It is the day when we recognize the men and women who have risked life and limb to protect us, and our way of life. On Veteran’s Day, I think of true American Heroes, like Pembroke Pines native Patrick Xavier, Jr., a Marine who gallantly gave his life for his country. I also think of the countless Lance Corporals and Specialists, Sailors and Airmen, who we rarely read about. These faceless heroes silently labor away, frequently at risk, yet are seldom recognized. They don’t ask for much. Each one of them felt a calling to volunteer; some because they wanted to prove something to themselves; others, because of a deep desire to “give back” to their country. Perhaps we should go out of our way on November 11th to do something nice for them. So, if you see a service member on that special day, buy him a drink, pick up the tab for her lunch, or simply say “thank you” or “Oorah!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it might be all that they need. Happy Thanksgiving, and to all those veterans out there, Thanks! Sincerely, Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

Pirate Themed Events Add Fun and Excitement For Patrons at the Plantation Historical Museum BY JILL SHARPE

T

wo special events, held in conjunction with the Pirates! Treasure, Terror and Tall Tales Exhibition at the Plantation Historical Museum in September really brought the exhibit to life delighting visitors young and old. On Saturday, September 17th there was much excitement during the Pirate Lingo Bingo. To compliment the exhibit, the traditional bingo game was given a twist. Instead of the usual numbers found on bingo cards, they were replaced with pirate words, phrases and names. Curator John Feeney, the official bingo caller, added facts and historical antidotes during the game. Instead of yelling “Bingo!” participants hollered “Ahoy!” when they got four in a row and then Wanda Stewart, the bingo checker, verified the win. Everyone was having such a great time that the game was

10

extended until everyone won a prize and plans were made for future themed bingo games. On Thursday, September 22nd Margaret Weller gave a wondrous presentation on treasure hunting along Florida’s coasts. Lady Gold Diver, as she is also known as, discussed the long and tedious journey to find a shipwreck and its rare cargo. She displayed some of her finds, such as gold chains, shellencrusted weapons, odd passenger items such as a gold toothpick and other artifacts that she keeps locked away safely in a bank vault. “What a treat it was to meet Margaret Weller,” said Wanda Stewart, Plantation Historical Museum Board member. Weller also signed several books written by her late husband, treasure hunter Bob, “Frogfoot” Weller.

Plantation Historical Museum Gets Ready for Another Magical Winter Wonderland Exhibit BY JILL SHARPE

W

inter Wonderland returns to the Plantation Historical Museum for its 31st year. Beginning on December 1st and ending on January 7th, the annual holiday extravaganza will showcase over 40 different themed trees, an expanded Hanukkah exhibit and a Kwanzaa display. The entire month of November is dedicated to preparation for this exhibit. Last year three miniature trees were decorated in the themes of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Technology” and “Elves”. “Visitors had to choose which theme they would like to see as the new tree added in 2016, said Museum Curator John Feeney. Beating the “Nightmare Before Christmas” by only 40 votes, the new tree will be “Elves.” “The contest was a huge hit and another tree contest will be held again this year,” said Feeney. Santa will be visiting the Museum on December 10th & 17th, 10am -12noon & 1pm-3 pm. On December 8th and 15th the Museum will be open from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm for special holiday entertainment that begins at 7pm. The Handbell and Handchimes Choir from the Plantation United Methodist Church will perform on December 8th and Darrel House will be performing as Santa Claus and singing holiday songs on December 15th. Admission to the Plantation Historical Museum and the Christmas Tree Exhibit is free to the public but they do accept donations. The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane. They can be reached at 954-797-27222 and online at http://plantation.org/Museum/.

Special Golden Retriever Brings Joy and Comfort Wherever He Goes BY JILL SHARPE

P

lantation residents Dennis and Myra Kalodish are mighty proud to be at the end of the leash of a very special dog. Charlie, an AKC Therapy Dog, recently received top honors from the American

Charlie

Kennel Club for 400 documented therapy visits. In truth, Charlie, has logged more than 600 therapy visits in his seven years on this earth and he isn’t slowing down. Charlie visits Covenant Village Nursing Facilities, Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Breast Cancer Clinic and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital on a regular basis. He also works with the Broward Sheriff’s office during their charity events and he visits the Helen B. Hoffman Library in Plantation every week for their TDI “reading to the dog” program. In addition Charlie is on call for hospice visits. One of only 26 dogs in the country to receive the AKC honor, Charlie received a gold medal which reads AKC THERAPY DOG DISTINGUISHED. Dennis prints tons of pictures of Charlie and his sidekick Samie, a three-year-old Golden Retriever also owned by the Kalodish’s. The pictures have paw prints on them and say “Thank you for reading to me.” Every picture is different and they are highly sought after by the kids at the library. “They collect them like valuable trading cards,” said Dennis. Myra, who takes Charlie to visit patients at the Memorial Breast Cancer Clinic, said Charlie really does calm nerves and puts smiles on people’s faces. “A recent patient told me she was really nervous about her cancer treatment and was so grateful because Charlie made her feel better about what she was facing,” Myra said. international and has owned and trained countless therapy dogs over the years, says Charlie stands out as one of the very best. “I can’t explain what it is about him that makes him so unique but everyone feels it,” Dennis said. And the person who perhaps feels Charlie’s love the most are the humans he lives with. “Therapy work with these dogs is my life,” Dennis said.

MARK HYATT FOR PLANTATION CITY COUNCIL, GROUP 4

M

ark Hyatt, a 26 year resident of Plantation, is a candidate for Plantation City Council, Group 4. Mark has been married to his wife, Kathy, for 25 years. They have two children, Matthew (15) and Melissa (12). Mark and his wife operate a Plantation based business focusing on real estate and mortgage banking. Recently, Mr. Hyatt answered questions about the City of Plantation, his platform and being a public servant.

How would you improve volunteerism in the City of Plantation?

What is your motivation to enter public service?

What do you propose to do to improve fiscal responsibility in Plantation?

My two children were the primary reason for my decision to enter the race for Plantation City Council. I was raised in a family that believed to whom much is given, much is required. My late mother was very involved in Hallandale city politics in 1970, running for Hallandale City Commissioner. Public service has been a large part of my life for decades.

I believe our city can be as great as we want it to be. Our residents, not entitled politicians and their rubber stamp followers, determine the heights that this city can rise to. Volunteer organizations in our city are tired of only seeing politicians during an election year. I will lead the effort to recruit, support and honor volunteers in this city.

Property taxes have risen almost TWENTY MILLION dollars over the past four years. There have been three millage rate raises during this time. I will stop these tax increases. I will make my spending decisions like my wife and I do at our kitchen table at the end of the month.

What do you mean by the term fiscal conservative? With Plantation residents’ property values increasing over the last four years, my opponent never moved to cut property tax (millage) rates. I will put money back into the pockets of Plantation residents to spend on themselves and their families. We can do better and I will as the next City Councilman from Group 4.

Give me examples of how you would focus on the word “servant” in the term public servant? I want the residents of the city to know that Mark Hyatt works for them. They are the BOSS! This city has established the culture of intimidation. I will treat every email, text, letter or personal visit as if it was a communication from one of my business clients. I will truly live out the term “servant.” Lynne Hyatt, Mark’s mother, ran for Hallandale City Council in 1970.

What are your main platform planks? I have three main campaign planks. They are: Volunteerism; Fiscal Responsibility; and Responsive Public Servant.

Don Hyatt, Mark’s father, a retired decorated Veteran

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tell us about your family’s famous Christmas holiday display? Absolutely! My wife and I opened our home in Plantation during the Christmas season for thousands of families during the past twenty years. We brought joy to families, including thousands of children, during the most special time of year. Many neighbors in the neighborhood love our display and volunteer each year. No one has ever been injured during this time.

Hyatt Extreme Christmas in Plantation, FL

We are shocked that the City has spent between $200,000 and $300,000 on legal fees fighting our family’s Christmas display. I believe there are far greater uses of our limited tax funds. My family will accept whatever decision Judge Marina Garcia Wood renders in this case.

What is one of first actions that you will take if you are elected to the City Council? I will recruit at least one person from each one of the 29 precincts of our City to join a Task Force to help me implement my three-point platform. Politicians do not have all of the answers. I will not wait four years before reaching out for resident opinions about our great City. Political Advertisement paid for and approved by Mark Hyatt for Plantation City Council, Group 4

Plantation Author Publishes His Debut Novel COMMUNITY NEWS

BY JILL SHARPE

P

lantation resident Leonard Schnur, Psy.D., a Clinical Professor in the College of Psychology at Nova Southeastern University, was inspired to write a thriller novel after he and his wife received a series of mysterious letters from an anonymous sender. It was shortly after 9/11 that Schnur began receiving the letters which contained a mix of veiled threats, phrases from poems and songs, and in one case, hockey tickets. Schnur was never able to determine who sent the letters, and they stopped coming after a year. Although the real life story ended there, the idea was planted to write a novel about a similar circumstance that upset someone’s stable and steady life. Schnur created the character Nathan Stern, Ph.D. and titled his book Inexact Vengeance. Writing progress was slow at first because Schnur was balancing writing with running a private practice and teaching at NSU. By 2006 Schnur had completed about 100 pages of a draft and then decided to put the manuscript aside for several years. He later returned to the book and completed it in 2013, then set about searching for a literary agent. After a long process he decided to self-publish, in print and digital. He used the pseudonym D.S. Leonard to separate his fiction from academic writing and from his professional life as a psychologist. Although protaganist Nathan Stern is a South Floridabased psychologist who receives strange letters, Schnur said there are not any other similarities between him and his character. He does however include relevant information about psychology, therapy and treatment in the book. Having worked on Inexact Vengeance for so many years, Schnur said he was happy to finally see it finished and in print.

“It’s a good feeling. There’s a feeling of accomplishment and closure,” he said. However, even with a feeling of closure, Schnur isn’t done yet with Nathan Stern and is already working on a sequel. He dedicates blocks of time to writing but has no plans to turn to writing full time and will continue to balance it with teaching and private practice. “I’m not yet ready to retire from private practice or retire my character, Dr. Nathan Stern,” he said. Inexact Vengeance is available in both print and digital from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Some people are intimidated by the thought of cooking Thanksgiving dinner. The idea of serving relatives and friends dry turkey can be stressful. Have no fear, though, cooking a Thanksgiving turkey is actually quite easy. We have been using this recipe at home for years with great success. Enjoy!

Ingredients: 1 large whole turkey (fresh or defrosted) ½ cup unsalted melted butter or olive oil Kosher Salt Fresh ground pepper One celery stalk (cut into thirds) One onion, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Two apples, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Herbs (sage, rosemary and/or thyme) Instructions:

Margaritaville

Preheat oven to 325° F. Remove neck and giblets from turkey, then wash thoroughly, inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a cooking rack, in a shallow roasting pan. Coat the exterior of the turkey with the olive oil or butter, then season with kosher salt and pepper. Loosely stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, apples and herbs.

Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

Place prepared turkey in center of oven. After 2 ½ hours, loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil, to prevent the skin from burning. Continue to cook until the breast of the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 180° F. Remove from oven, and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes before carving.

American Heritage Student Scores on the Preliminary SAT Rank Them As the Top Private School in the Nation for National Merit Scholars BY JILL SHARPE

F

ifty (50) seniors from American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida have been named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC); they were top scorers on the Preliminary SAT/ NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) throughout the state of Florida. This number of students puts American Heritage at the top of the nation for

private schools with the highest number of National Merit Scholars, top high school in Florida for the 7th straight year, and #9 out of 22,000 high schools throughout the U.S. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about

$33 million that will be offered next spring. NMSC is a non-profit organization that operates without government assistance, and scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goal of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence. Thirty nine (39) additional Heritage students received Commended status on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, however, some students are candidates for scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Another national recognition program honored Heritage students this year based on their PSAT/NMSQT scores. Twenty-five (25) seniors were selected by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) as the top academically outstanding Hispanic/ Latino high school students. “I am so proud of how our students continue to demonstrate academic excellence year after year,” said Elise Blum, Principal of the high school at American Heritage. “It is quite an accomplishment to be among the top 1% of high school students in the entire nation, and I hope this recognition empowers them to continue to achieve great things,” Blum said.

Plantation High School Participates in Harvest Drive BY JILL SHARPE

“The students look forward each year to contributing to Harvest Drive and are dedicated to making each year better than the last,” said Elizabeth Edwards, School Social Worker. “The Drive is designed to teach students about giving back,” Edwards said. “The students (even those who may be a recipient of the Harvest Drive) find it rewarding to contribute to the Harvest Drive in their own way. Some contribute by volunteering their time, some give donations, and others provide encouragement and support each other along the way. All in all, everyone finds their nitch and it is truly a heartfelt event to witness in action.”

s they have for the past five years, Plantation High School (PHS) is hard at work preparing to feed 160 families this year for Thanksgiving through the Harvest Drive. Last year their efforts provided for 150 families. Each family receives a Publix gift card, several bags of groceries, and other household necessities including toilet paper, dish detergent, and laundry detergent. The Harvest Drive is a school wide event. When families arrive to Plantation High School to receive their goods, they are greeted and the hugs and emotional thank you’s are cascaded throughout the campus. Families report that without Harvest Drive, they would not have had a real thanksgiving. Often times they come back the following year to donate or volunteer as a way to pay it forward. Each week of the drive, which started in October, a weekly breakdown of items is collected at Plantation High School and at 12 neighboring schools who join with PHS and refer families. All participating schools work collectively to collect as much as possible. Items most wanted include toilet paper, paper towels, deodorant, detergent (for both dishes and clothes) and juice.

The community can help by dropping off donations to Plantation High School through November 14th. The school is always looking for partnerships within the 365 community. While Harvest Drive is an annual event, feeding PHS students is an ongoing task. For more information about the items the school collects please visit: http://harvestdriveflorida.com/.

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) strategic focus on early learning and literacy is getting national support. On September 21st BCPS and the non-profit organization Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) announced an exciting partnership and grant funding to support early literacy development in kindergarten through third grade students. The announcement and kickoff celebration at Plantation Elementary School included School Board members, Superintendent Robert W. Runcie, CLI representatives, District staff and local community leaders, as well as reading activities by students. Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a non-profit organization focused on strengthening education in the United States by ensuring students can read by the end of third grade. In November 2015, CLI was awarded $19.5 million from the 2015 Investing in Innovation (i3 grant) competition from the U.S. Department of Education. CLI is using this funding to expand its program into four school districts across the nation, including Broward County Public Schools – the only school district in Florida chosen to participate. As part of the CLI partnership, seven BCPS schools are receiving personalized, one-on-one teacher coaching, research-based literacy training, small group coaching, books and materials. The seven schools are: Charles Drew Elementary School, Forest Hills Elementary School, Palmview Elementary School, Pines Lakes Elementary School, Plantation

Elementary School, Sanders Park Elementary School and Stirling Elementary School. “Ensuring our students have the skills they need to be independent readers by third grade is vital to their overall educational success. Creating a strong reading foundation starts with providing our students high-quality early learning and literacy experiences,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Environmental Author Speaks to Students at South Plantation High School BY JILL SHARPE

or the last several years, the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet program at South Plantation High has invited an author who has a publication about a current environmental issue to speak to the students and staff. On September 26th Wenonah

John Paul Carriego introduces author Wenonah Hauter to the magnet students

Hauter spoke to students about her experiences as an environmental activist. The founder and Executive Director of Food & Water Watch read from and discussed her latest book: Frackopoly: The Battle for the Future of Energy and the Environment. Hauter encouraged students to be activists about their beliefs. “Students

need to get involved in the decisions that affect their lives in the future through political action, “ she said. In advance of the talk, students wrote a short essay expressing their views on hydraulic fracking and how it impacts the environment. The author of the winning paper, sophomore John Paul Carriego from Plantation, introduced Hauter to the audience. After the talk, students met Hauter and discussed the topic more in depth. “Speakers open our eyes to outside views and share information other than that which is in mandated books and classes,” said Junior Juan Cabrera from Oakland Park. “I learned about fracking in AP Environmental Laine Francois and Caleb Downey speak to the author as she Science last year, signs books. and today I learned that changing public policy is the key to a fair and equitable use of our natural resources.” The lecture introduced freshmen to the magnet theme. Caleb Downey, from Plantation, said he now “understands how fracking can affect jobs,” while Laine Francois, from Lauderdale Lakes said “it is detrimental to Florida” and that she “did not want it to happen here.” Hauter also authored Foodopoly, an account of the business behind the meat, vegetables, grains and milk that most Americans eat every day. The author stayed to sign books that were purchased by students and parents. Business partner, Books & Books, sponsors the author series along with the Fans of the Everglades Restoration Magnet (F.ER.M.), parent organization. South Plantation is an allcounty program and 500 students throughout Broward attend South Plantation for the magnet. For more information, check the website: sphsmagnet.com.

BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF

T

he Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department wishes you and your family a safe and very happy Thanksgiving! As we spend extra time preparing for the holiday feast, it’s especially important to stay mindful of what’s happening in the kitchen. More cooking fires happen in the home on Thanksgiving Day than on any other day of the year. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, from 2011 – 2013, the number of reported cooking fires per day more than doubled on Thanksgiving. Most of these fires happened between noon and 3:00 pm, when many people were preparing their holiday dinner. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of these and all residential fires in the US – many of which result in injuries and fatalities. However, this type of fire can usually be avoided when people are vigilant. “Staying in the kitchen and paying attention to what’s cooking is the key to preventing this from happening in your home,” said Sunrise Fire-Rescue Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “Keep the pot or pan lid nearby when cooking on the stove. If something does flame up on the burner, slide the lid over it to put it out, and turn off the heat. If the fire can’t be quickly managed, immediately go outside and call 9-1-1.”

Black Diamond Couture Boutique In addition to unattended cooking equipment, residential cooking fires are typically caused by a heat source left too close to flammable materials, product misuse, or cooking equipment not being properly turned off. The use of turkey fryers – which use a large amount of cooking oil at high temperatures – poses a particularly high risk. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advises people against using them, recommending that folks intent on having fried turkey instead seek out grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants that offer it, or that they use “oil-less” turkey fryers. People gathering together while food is being prepared during Thanksgiving also presents an increased opportunity for burns and scalds to happen – particularly where children (and pets) are around and underfoot. To better prevent these injuries, cook on the back burners of the rangetop, and make sure all pot handles are turned inward - so that small children can’t easily reach them. Appliances that get hot, such as toaster ovens, should also be well out of children’s reach. Enforce a “kid-free/pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drinks are prepared or carried. Keeping these tips in mind, please cook with caution, that you and your loved ones may enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

a simple, effective Way to combat germs

It’s that time of year again…people with coughs, sneezes and runny noses seem to be lurking around every corner. Each year, kids miss an estimated 22 million days of school due to the common cold. One of the best ways you can prevent against illnesses such as cold and flu is by washing your hands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the single most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness to others is to wash your hands. It seems simple, but cleaning your hands regularly can get rid of the germs you pick up from other people, or even everyday objects that you touch. Germs can enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth – all areas that we often touch without even realizing it. You are also at risk of picking up or spreading germs if you eat or prepare food without washing your hands. The CDC notes that germs can multiply under certain conditions in some foods – meaning more people are at risk of getting sick. Germs can even get on objects that you regularly touch: hand rails, door knobs, countertops, etc.

When to wash To gain the maximum protection from hand hygiene, the CDC recommends washing your hands at the following times using either soap and water or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol: ▸ Before, during and after preparing food ▸ Before eating food ▸ Before and after caring for someone who is sick ▸ Before and after treating a cut or wound ▸ After using the toilet ▸ After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing ▸ After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste ▸ After handling pet food or pet treats ▸ After touching garbage How you wash your hands is just as important as the act itself. When using soap and water: ▸ Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. ▸ Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. ▸ Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Tip from the CDC: Humming the “Happy Birthday” song twice, from beginning to end, while scrubbing. ▸ Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. ▸ Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. When using a hand sanitizer: ▸ Apply the product to the palm of one hand. Make sure to check the label for the correct amount. ▸ Rub your hands together. ▸ Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. The CDC states that hand sanitizers are not as effective as soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Emergencies are never planned but The Emergency Center in Davie offers convenient emergency services that never close. The Emergency Center of Davie, located at 10230 W. State Rd. 84, is just West of Nob Hill Rd on West State Rd. 84. For more information please visit www.ERcare247.com. In case of an emergency, always call 911.
