Getting into the Holiday Spirit

T

ime is flying by and winter is at our door. While we generally do not get the snowflakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. The upcoming holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, but for all of us it should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It is a time to think about all the big issues which have occurred throughout the year of 2015, as well as the little issues that happened. It’s a season to gage our own conduct. Have we made enough time to spend with our children and spouses? Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we spent the time to be truly together with our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements, to forgive and forget. This is also the time to remember those less fortunate, to teach our children to share our good fortunes with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. And consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

Plantation Based Broward Meals on Wheels Requests Support From the Community to Protect Broward’s Seniors from Isolation and Hunger BY JILL SHARPE

D

ue to the rapidly growing number of seniors in need, Plantation based Broward Meals on Wheels has had to implement a waiting list for the first time in its 30 year history. The number of seniors in Broward county who will go hungry without this service continues to grow rapidly, and it will take many more volunteers and donors to meet the escalating need. Due to the increased demand, the organization is launching a holiday awareness campaign to assist more seniors than ever before. Currently, there are 627 seniors on the waiting list for Older Americans Act-funded home delivered meals. Broward Meals on Wheels has been forced to prioritize who will receive meals and of the 4 priority levels, 95% of the older adults on the list are in the top 2 neediest ranks: Priority 1 and Priority 2. Priority 1 clients are physically unable to leave their home, have no reliable support system and cannot prepare meals for themselves. They may also suffer from severe physical ailments such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Priority 2 clients may be able to get out with assistance, and may have some degree of caregiver to assist them; however they are on a fixed income, cannot usually afford nutritious food, and are not physically able to visit a congregate dining site. Broward Meals on Wheels is one of 5,000 local Meals on Wheels programs

across the country working every day to protect millions of seniors from the threats of isolation and hunger – an effort made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help in communities just like Broward County all across America. “Broward Meals on Wheels is powered by everyday people standing up to lend a caring hand to their aging neighbors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director of Broward Meals on Wheels. “We need many more helping hands and generous donors to enable us to be there for more seniors. We’re optimistic that this holiday awareness campaign will help shed light upon the critical need to our local programs, fill a broader range of volunteer needs, and make it easier for those interested in helping us to put food on the tables.” Members of the community can get involved by donating their time, talents or treasure to help further the mission and help take seniors off the waiting list. Individuals or corporations interested in donating or volunteering with Broward Meals on Wheels can learn more and sign up at www.bmow.org.

“island-hopped” with 900 Seabees. McMulloch then served as an engineer aboard several freighters that were carrying ammunition and tanks in the North Atlantic Convoy. He did a three-year hitch in the Marine Corps Reserve from 19471950. Surprised by the outpouring of support, especially upon the group’s return to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, he said, “It was a big surprise to hear the yelling and screaming and seeing fellow Marines. It was great seeing them. Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Throughout the daylong trip, the group of veterans was greeted and honored by well-wishers, color guards, first responders, fellow military, and families with their children. “Some of these children were seven, eight and nine years-old, and they were clapping and waving flags. It was overwhelming,” said Schmid. Noticeably touched by the outpouring of sentiment, he added, “All of us, we all took the cheering, claps and honors on behalf of our fellow American soldiers.” On Veterans Day Covenant Village of Florida honored and celebrated military veterans living at the continuing care retirement community with a Veterans Day Dance that included entertainment by The USO Trio.

couldn’t believe a general shook my hand. Whoever heard of a general shaking your hand?” recalled 97 year-old John “JJ” Schmid, a U.S. Air Force mechanic who served in World War II and was one of 79 World War II and Korean War veterans who participated in the Honor Flight South Florida. The exchange with a military general was one of many fond memories Schmid tucked away from his trip to Washington D.C. Schmid, along with fellow veterans and Covenant Village of Florida residents Al Foster, 93, and George McMulloch, 90, left on an early morning flight en route to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials built in their honor. While it was an early start to a long day, it was a trip they all agreed was worth taking. “A guy like me, being a 90-year-old Marine, the Iwo Jima Memorial was something to see,” said McMulloch. “It was just a wonderful thing to experience.” “The Iwo Jima was the real McCoy,” agreed Schmid. “And the World War II memorial was, well, it was just awesome.” McMulloch attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and in 1943 was an engineer cadet onboard a naval transport ship in the South Pacific where they

Plantation Historical Museum’s Holiday Exhibit Will Delight Visitors This Holiday Season BY JILL SHARPE

P

lantation Historical Society’s elves have once again transformed the Plantation Historical Museum into a Winter Wonderland. Beginning on December 3rd and ending on January 9th, the annual holiday extravaganza will showcase over 40 different-themed trees, a large Hanukkah exhibit, a Kwanzaa display and a holiday village with model train. “Every year the Museum tries to add something new to this 30 year tradition,” said Museum Curator John Feeney. “This year, our International Tree will literally take you around the world with its rotating base! There are over 170 countries represented on this tree by either a miniature flag or souvenir doll,” Feeney said.

There will also be three tabletop trees to vote on in the “Which Tree Will Grow Up” Contest. The winner will be a featured full-sized tree in next year’s exhibit. Santa will of course be back again on Saturdays December 12th and December 19th from 10 am – 12 noon and 1 pm – 3 pm. He will be giving out handcrafted wooded toys made by the Lauderdale West Wood Workers Club. Also on Saturday December 12th Wanda Wiranis’ piano students, who have been delighting visitors since the 1970s, will perform again this year. The Museum’s popular Thursday Open Houses 6:30pm – 8:30pm evening events will feature the Plantation United Methodist Church Chapel Bells, a Handbell and Handchime Choir on December 10th at

Bariatric Surgery – An Effective Way to Lose Weight A third option, adjustable gastric banding, is not widely used today because it does not have the same long-term effectiveness of the other two procedures, but some patients still prefer it. Emanuele Lo Menzo, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Bariatric Surgeon

For people who need to lose weight but have been unsuccessful with diet and exercise, there are procedures known as bariatric surgery that can help. Types of bariatric surgery There are three main types of bariatric surgery. All are done laparoscopically (minimally invasive) and only require the patient to be in the hospital for one day. Most patients do very well with these procedures and can return to work in about 2 weeks. The procedure with the longest track record is gastric bypass, in which a small pouch is created, restricting food intake, and bypassing a segment of the small intestine. This limits the amount of food intake and its absorption. Another option is to have a gastric sleeve, in which only the size of the stomach is limited. This option requires patients to follow dietary changes more closely.

Very recently another option has been approved for people with less severe cases of obesity: the intragastric balloon. This is a non-surgical procedure, in which a balloon is inserted into the stomach via an endoscopy, under light anesthesia. The balloon is removed in a similar way after six months, and nutritional counseling continues for one year. To be a candidate Ideal candidates for bariatric surgery have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher, as well as a weight-related condition, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure or heart disease. Patients who have a BMI of 40 or higher can have the surgery even if they do not have any coexisting conditions. Additionally, for consideration of the intra-gastric balloon, candidates would have a BMI of 30-35. Getting started At Cleveland Clinic Florida, patients who inquire about bariatric surgery are asked to attend one of our free seminars – usually offered twice a week – so they can learn about the procedures and start to discuss insurance issues. After that, they come back for an individual appointment at which a complete physical is done, as well as consultation

to discuss which procedure is best for them. Patients also attend a physician-directed nutrition class. The next step is to await clearance from their insurance company, which may have additional requirements, such as losing weight on a supervised diet prior. This can take 3 to 12 months. A final step is for patients to receive approval to proceed from their primary care physician and any specialists they may be seeing, such as cardiologist or a diabetes specialist. Success Overall, our patients lose about 70 percent of their excess weight in the first 18 months following surgery. The intra-gastric balloon leads to a 2530% of excess weight loss. Many see dramatic improvements in their other health problems as well. Patients who continue to follow the nutritional plan and come for annual follow up appointments as recommended usually keep the weight off for life.

Super Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Helps Patients Achieve Confident Beautiful Smiles Feature Story

BY JILL SHARPE

S

uper Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics offers comprehensive dental care for children ages one to 18, and orthodontics for children, adolescents and adults. Husband and wife Dr. Amanda Buscemi (pediatric dentist) and Dr. Michael Maruri (orthodontist) are both specialists in their respective fields. Their goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of children, adolescents and adults by offering the highest-quality dental care in a comfortable, relaxed and friendly environment. Dr. Buscemi and Dr. Maruri answered some commonly asked question about their practice.

When should I first take my child to the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts. The idea of such early dental visits is still surprising to many new parents. However, national studies have shown that preschool-aged children are getting more cavities. More than 1 in 4 children in the United States has had at least one cavity by the age of 4. Many kids get cavities as early as age 2. To prevent early childhood cavities, parents first have to find out their child’s risk of developing cavities. They also need to learn how to manage diet, hygiene and fluoride to prevent problems.

What should my child expect at his/her first dental visit? At your first dental visit, I

(Dr. Buscemi) will examine and clean your child’s teeth, but more importantly I get a chance to assess your child’s oral health and how to best care for their teeth before any problems may occur. We will discuss what is the best way for you to clean your child’s teeth, the proper way to use fluoride and oral habits such as finger and pacifier sucking. The main goal of the first dental visit is to make it a positive experience for the child so they perceive going to the dentist as fun as opposed to the negative reputation that going to the dentist has.

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist? Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. Pediatric dentists are primary oral care providers which receive an additional two to three years of residency training beyond dental school making us specialists in treating infants and children through adolescence, including those with special needs.

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

The first step is to not share bottles, utensils or anything that goes in your mouth with your

14

child. When your child is born, their mouth is free of the tooth decay causing bacteria Mutans Streptococci (MS). Multiple studies have shown that infants are first inoculated with MS via mother-child transmission. While it is impossible to keep your child totally free of disease causing pathogens like MS, having a regimented hygiene and diet plan is the first place to start. Simple things such as not letting them fall asleep with a bottle and cleaning their teeth as soon as they erupt with gauze and water will greatly decrease their risk of getting tooth decay.

Do you offer laughing gas and sedation dentistry? Yes, part of the specialty training that pediatric dentists receive is in pediatric analgesia. Though most children do very well with just behavioral management techniques, a child with uncontrollable body movements can be unsafe in a dental treatment room. The lightest and most common form of analgesia is nitrous oxide (laugh-

ing gas). Then next level of sedation is conscious oral sedation, where oral sedatives along with nitrous oxide are used to make your child sleepy but still awake with the ability to respond when spoken too. If a child is extremely uncooperative and has a severe medical/dental condition, I have hospital privileges at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital where a pediatric anesthesiologist will provide the proper anesthesia.

When should my child be evaluated for orthodontic treatment? Traditionally, treat-

ment with dental braces begins when a child has lost most of his or her baby (primary) teeth, and a majority of his or her adult (permanent) teeth have grown in , this is usually between the ages of 10-14. However in circumstance where a malocclusion may hinder growth or orthopedic expansion of the jaws is needed, orthodontics may be started earlier. The American Association of Orthodontist (AAO) recommends getting your first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

What types of braces do you offer? We

offer four types of orthodontic appliances in

our office. The majority of our younger patients choose traditional metal braces so they can change colors every time they come in for an adjustment. Our more aesthetically concerned patient can choose between ceramic braces, Invisalign™ and lingual braces (braces placed on the inside of the teeth).

Can adults get orthodontic treatment in your office? Absolutely, actually around 25

percent of our orthodontic patients are adults. Adult orthodontics nationally has increase 14 percent from 2010 to 2012 according to a recent study by the AAO. There are special considerations for adults such as periodontal disease and missing teeth that children usually do not have. Therefore you will need good communication with your general dentist and orthodontist to make sure all aspects of your oral health are being addressed.

How often do I have to come in for orthodontic adjustments? The length of time

between braces adjustments for my patients is typically every 6-8 weeks. It is important to understand that the length of time between your orthodontic adjustments does not correspond with how fast your teeth are moving. Modern braces use wires that are a mixture of metals (alloys) originally designed by NASA for outer space. This combination of metals allows the wire to apply gentle forces for a long period of time. Unlike older stainless steel wires that typically had to be adjusted every month, modern alloy wires can be effective for several months. Fire Prevention Poster and Essay Contest Winners Honored community news

BY JILL SHARPE

A

s part of their Fire Prevention month activities the Plantation Fire Department recently honored the Citywide winners of their 39th Annual Fire Prevention Poster and Essay Contest at the Plantation Chamber of Commerce breakfast, at the Jacaranda Country Club on October 14th and then again at the City Council meeting on October 21st. The Poster and Essay contest has been part of the Plantation Fire Department and the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s fire prevention activities since First Place essay winner Eric Bentley 1976. This year’s fire prevention theme “Hear the Beep When You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Detector,” reminds everyone that smoke detectors are essential for saving lives during a fire. They should be checked monthly, batteries replaced semi-annually, and the detectors replaced every 10 years. The goal of the program, is to encourage school-aged children to help firefighters keep communities safer by preventing and preparing for fire emergencies. “Fire safety is truly a team effort,” said Fire Chief Laney Stearns. “The impact

children have on their parents and families when bringing home the fire safety message is our strongest tool. Education is one of our most powerful weapons against fire and Fire Prevention Week is always the perfect tie-in for our annual competition.” Final submissions were judged by the Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library and the Fire Department Administrative staff. Winners were named in various categories including “City-Wide” and “Best in School.”

“Makers Month” at West Regional Library Inspires Creativity

18

BY JILL SHARPE

W

est Regional Library in Plantation held a showcase for everything hightech to low-tech by celebrating “Maker’s Month” for the second year in a row. The month of September saw the entire Broward County library system host events where patrons could get hands-on with a variety of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and technology) projects. Creators, innovators and those curious about all things do-it-yourself could try out everything from 3D printing to quilting. Visitors to the library browsed through knit pieces and wood sculptures, while others made dog toys using fleece fabric. The September calendar also included classes like “Sew with Ellie: Alterations on Skirts and Pants” and meetings of the Happy Knitters & Crotchetier Intermediate Knitting/Crochet/ Crafter’s Group. West Regional Library frequently hosts community events and organizers were very happy with the public’s positive response to Maker’s Month. “The genesis of the whole event came from one of our librarians as we wanted to celebrate the makers and people who create things,” said Loria Hyatt, the library’s Programming and Events Coordinator. “We had an event in the summer where people were making dog toys to be donated to Broward County Animal Care so we wanted to incorporate things like that into a Maker’s Month. I was very pleased with the turnout. It was a good mix of library regulars and some people who just heard about it in the newspaper.”

DECEMBER 2015 | OUR CITY PLANTATION

Library visitors enjoyed seeing the robotics team from Hollywood Hills High School demonstrate how the robot they built could move and stack boxes. Cuttingedge technology has been a key part of Maker’s Month as the inaugural edition last year featured the unveiling of the Creation Station at the county’s Main Library. The Creation Station is made up of innovative tools that users can experiment with featuring emerging technologies like 3D printing. Traditional hobbies were also a big part of Maker’s Month, as the library held an educational demonstration on woodturning, a type of woodworking where the wooden object is spun while hand tools shape the wood. “A big part of our club is educating the public about woodturning and what people can do with trees and branches that aren’t used anymore, like if a limb falls down,” said Lee Sky of the Gold Coast Woodturners. “We use only recycled wood, we don’t buy any of it.” Despite a large turnout at the library, several of the exhibitors found time to share ideas. “It was a bigger crowd and I really liked the group of kids who held a workshop on composting before we went on,” Sky said. “I sat in on their workshop and then they sat in on mine and we ended up talking about composting mulch from the trees I use.” This month, the West Regional Library Youth Services Department will be hosting a “Children’s Big Winter Holiday Party” on December 15th at 6:00 pm. Details on all upcoming events can be found online at www.broward.org/library.

etween pep rallies and football games, hanging with friends, part-time jobs, writing papers and extended essays, Plantation High School seniors also spent time this fall thinking about where they want to be next fall as they worked on submitting college applications. In an effort to help make their dreams come true, the BRACE office at Plantation High School proudly participated in College Application Week 2015, part of the Florida College Access Network College Application Campaign; GOAL 2025, an effort to increase the number of students who pursue postsecondary education. During College Application Week 2015, the school’s BRACE office provided assistance to seniors completing their applications with the much appreciated support of their dynamic community partners: Wells Fargo, College Summit, Broward College, The Marines, FAU NAACP and FAU Black Student Association. BRACE advisor Brook Smith said college application events were held during the school day which enabled staff to personally guide over 400 students through completing their college applicationswith a focus on engaging first-generation, low-income students who may otherwise not apply to college. “We also encouraged every Colonel to take the ASVAB career explorations interest exam to help them prepare for postsecondary success by better understanding their own interest and skill sets,” said Smith. Recovery: Exploring Your Choices

F

inding addiction treatment services can be an overwhelming process, especially when you or your loved one is in crisis. Addiction treatment has come a long way. It is no longer a one size fits all model and it is important to know that you do have choices beyond the traditional 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) models. Many people in recovery have core issues that go well beyond alcoholism or drug addiction that the traditional 12-step AA models do not address. The lifestyle of addiction itself often puts many people in situations that leave them feeling guilty and full of shame. Still others may have experienced traumatic events that leave lasting psychological scars. Furthermore, the sad truth is that many people who abuse drugs and alcohol experience situations that have created scars long before they discovered alcohol and drugs. In fact, many have started to abuse substances as a way to cope with the pain of their past traumas. Furthermore, the discovery of a pre-existing or undiagnosed mental illness can be a vital component to maintaining sobriety. Just as honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness are the keys to recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, so too are they the keys for overcoming core issues. Honestly taking stock of what the core issues are is required if someone is to learn new ways of coping with the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that have resulted from those issues. In order to find freedom from core issues and misguided beliefs, people in recovery need to relearn how to look at themselves and others, as well as how to examine what they tell themselves, how they see the world, and how they interact with those around them. It is often hard work. The outcome of examining your core issues is a life with more joy, desire and interest. Having the courage and the willingness to take an honest look at your issues and to ask for help in working through them is the first step.

You can find all this and more at Our Savior Lutheran Church and School! Some non-traditional treatment centers offer a Case Management as part of their approach. Case management provides care that, in conjunction with therapy, supports the client beyond face-to-face meetings. These services are unique in that they bring cohesion to an individual’s treatment plan and are the bridge that connects the individual, family and care providers. It includes a variety of services and support for the client while engaging in other activities such as athletics and recreation (i.e. hiking, walking, indoor/outdoor rock climbing, etc.). It monitors an individual’s treatment progress from the initial point of assessment to the intake at the treatment center and all-the-way through treatment. There is an emphasis on communication between the client’s clinical team as they create a treatment program as well as the followthrough of aftercare recommendations. Recovery coaching is also a complement to therapeutic work. The Coach assists in the client’s implementation of goals established in therapy sessions. Coaching services reinforce the application of therapeutic coping skills into daily life. Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC, is Clinical Director/ CEO of A Bridge to Growth. It approaches addiction from all sides, addressing core issues, implementing a Case Management approach, and getting clients started with a Recovery Coach upon admission. Understanding the Difference Between a Credit Union and a Bank BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA

S

tart your day strong with a delicious cup of fresh brewed coffee and some credit union facts.... Since 1844, credit unions have been known for their great savings and now free checking accounts. However, did you know they offer an array of competitive loan products as well? Whether for a car, a mortgage or a home remodel, personal loan or a credit card, chances are you’ll be shopping for a loan at some point. It can be overwhelming. However, knowing the advantages of a credit union loan verses a bank loan can help you make the right decision. If you’ve never used a credit union, you may think they’re the same as banks...not so! Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by their members. Profits are distributed to members instead of shareholders. This fact makes all the difference...profits are returned to the members in the form of competitive interest rates on depository accounts and loans.

simple...you get pre-approved for the auto loan at your credit union, let the car buying/leasing service know exactly what you are looking for, then just sit back and relax. You are in good hands while the service finds the auto for you, negotiate the best deal and deliver it to you at your convenience.

Can I refinance my car loan at a credit union?

Yes, credit unions offer competitive rates, flexible refinancing terms and low processing fees. Refinancing your existing auto loan at a credit union can possibly save you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Whatever your reason, your local Credit Union has money to lend and a helping hand to make your dreams come true!!

What are some of the advantages of getting a loan through a credit union?

▸▸ Competitive interest rates-Lower loan rates mean lower monthly payments and less interest paid over the term of the loan ▸▸ Convenience-Apply online, in person or over the phone ▸▸ Fast loan approvals-Local underwriting and processing of loans ▸▸ Common sense approach-You are not just a credit score ▸▸ Flexible loan terms ▸▸ Lower processing fees than banks ▸▸ Excellent member service Many credit unions offer a free auto buying/leasing service to their members. This free service allows credit union members to shop for their dream car without visiting a car dealership! All the hassle and some of the fees are eliminated! It’s

“Winston” Winston is an eight-year-old Pomeranian. His favorite person is his mommy Ashley. As soon as mommy enters the front door Winston races under the bed to retrieve his favorite toy of the day and brings it to mommy. Winston’s daddy Chris gave him a Tigger head and it has become Winston’s favorite toy. Winston likes yogurt and he likes geckos. He dislikes vacuums and really dislikes being disturbed when he is sleeping. He loves to visit his Grandma Linda’s house in Minnesota. Winston was last seen watching mommy cook in the kitchen in hopes that she would drop some fried egg on the floor.
