The True Meaning of the Holiday Spirit

I

t is hard to believe , but winter is at our door .

While we generally do not get the snowflakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. The upcoming holidays may have different meanings to many of our readers due to our diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, but for all of us this should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we made enough time to truly spend with our children, our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements, to forgive and forget. This is also the time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. We should teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. Consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about.

Fire Department Selects Member of the Year By Jill Sharpe

Geared up: Plantation Member of the Year, Firefighter/ EMT Mark DeWalt displays the gear worn by Plantation’s SWAT medics. DeWalt was selected as the Member of the Year for his involvement with SWAT, the Honor Guard and long term commitment to the City and its residents.

M

ost young boys dream of being

firefighters, baseball players, or rock stars. Mark DeWalt was no different. Firefighting was in his blood. His grandfather was a New York City firefighter. DeWalt really wanted to play baseball, but fate would help define his priorities. One day, while playing centerfield a ball was hit in his direction. Just as he prepared to make the catch a fire truck went down the street. Distracted by the sound of the siren, DeWalt turned his head and watched the fire truck go by. Yes, he dropped the ball. Where many ball players would regret that moment, DeWalt never did. As a senior in high school DeWalt became involved in a firefighter recruit program. His science teacher, Jerry Broucek (Broh-check), a Plantation firefighter, inspired him and became his mentor. The young cadet spent his last semester in high school riding with Plantation. Upon graduating high School in 1998, DeWalt joined the Plantation Fire Department. He furthered his education while working fulltime for the Plantation Parks and Recreation Department by obtaining his EMT certificate. In 2000, DeWalt was hired fulltime as an EMT with the Rescue division where his experience

and leadership skills inspired many new medics and EMTs to make long term commitments to the department. DeWalt served for many years as a member of the department honor guard, leading parades and heralding many formal events. For the past several years DeWalt has served as the Honor Guard coordinator and the Commander of the Guard at major events. DeWalt never lost that competitive spirit. He joined Plantation’s Firematics team and helped win several State Championships. Most recently the Fire Department veteran chose to push his EMT skills to the limit by becoming a member of the Police Department SWAT team. DeWalt is one of only five Fire Department members who provide emergency care to police officers or victims of violent incidents under the toughest conditions. “So while many young boys dream of being a superstar, DeWalt essentially has become one,” said Joel Gordon, Battalion Chief. “He’s a firefighter, a ball player, and our rock star.”

Fire Prevention Poster and Essay Contest Winners Honored By Jill Sharpe

A

s part of their Fire Prevention month activities the

Plantation Fire Department honored the Citywide winners of their 38th Annual Fire Prevention Poster and Essay Contest at the Plantation Chamber of Commerce breakfast, at the Jacaranda Country Club on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:30 AM, then again at the City Council meeting, that evening, at 7:30 P.M. at City Hall. The Poster and Essay contest has been part of the Plantation Fire Department and the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s fire prevention activities since 1976. This year’s fire prevention theme “Smoke alarms save lives: Check yours monthly,” reminds everyone that smoke detectors are only effective if they are in working order. They should be checked monthly, batteries replaced semi-annually, and the detectors replaced every 10 years. The goal of the program, is to encourage school-aged children to help firefighters keep communities safer by preventing and preparing for fire emergencies. “Fire safety is truly a team effort,” said fire chief Laney Stearns. “The impact children have on their parents and families, when bringing home the fire safety message, is our strongest tool. Education is one of our most powerful weapons against fire and Fire Prevention Week is the perfect tie-in for our annual competition.” Final submissions were judged by the Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library and The Plantation Art Guild. Winners were named in various categories including “CityWide”, “Best in School“, and “Honorable Mention.” City-wide poster winners: ▸▸ First Place – Andrew Guillen, Ben Gamla Charter, 2nd grade ▸▸ Second Place – Leah Johnson, Tropical Elementary, 3rd grade ▸▸ Third Place – Andres Aramuni, American Heritage, 3rd grade ▸▸ City-wide Essay winners: ▸▸ First Place – Molly Blythman, Peters Elementary 5th grade ▸▸ Second Place – Katrice Dalley, Mirror Lake, 4th grade ▸▸ Third Place - Rohan Kumar, American Heritage, 5th grade

Nexus Shooting Provides a Safe, High-Tech, Professional Shooting and Gun Shopping Experience By Jill Sharpe

Describe the shooting range? With 40 lanes of shooting fun, Nexus has more capacity than any other range in the Southeast U.S. The ranges are subdivided into multiple rooms so that you can rent an entire room and have a completely private experience for your family, corporate event, parties, or just a group of friends. The ranges are 100 percent air conditioned and filtered with a million dollar military grade ventilation system allowing you to breathe easy and shoot in complete comfort no matter how hot and humid the Florida weather is outside.

W

Describe the showroom. Our guests

hether you are a gun enthusiast

or you just want to try your hand at shooting, you owe it to yourself to visit Nexus Shooting, one of the most advanced gun stores and ranges in the world. Located conveniently in Davie, this amazing facility is stateof-the-art in every way. It’s the perfect spot for those looking for a fun new sport and hobby, a thrilling and exciting idea for their next date night or peace of mind when it comes to protecting themselves and their families.

call our one-of-a-kind showroom the “Guggenheim Museum or Apple Store of gun stores” due to its spacious, clean and modern appearance showcasing hundreds of firearms.

Who is your typical customer? We attract a

high number of non-traditional customers who might otherwise be intimidated to visit a gun store such as women, kids, tourists, and especially first time shooters. Novices are warmly received and are taken step by step through the entire process.

Co-owner Bernard Hsiao, M.D., PhD answered some commonly asked questions about Nexus.

What services/products do you offer?

We offer gun and ammo sales, rentals, repairs, accessories, a 75 foot indoor range and training.

Nexus Shooting is an all-encompassing entertainment venue highlighted through the use of our revolutionary interactive live fire virtual range technology, the Nexus Lanes. Since the invention of the firearm, we have been shooting the same way, making holes in non-moving paper targets. This is of limited value when trying to learn practical real world skills. It’s highly unlikely that an intruder in your home is going to stand there like that paper target. Our proprietary technology allows you to shoot your gun and real ammo at interactive video targets such as video scenarios, shooting galleries, moving targets, zombie games, skill drills, and more. Each shot is analyzed by a computer and provides instantaneous feedback to help you become a better shooter. The Nexus Lanes bring your shooting skills to the next level while making it fun and entertaining at the same time. We also have a traditional paper target range as well.

14

Do you rent firearms? Yes, we have a very

extensive rental selection with almost 150 different firearms available. Choosing a firearm is a very personalized process and our rental program allows our guest to try out a variety to find the perfect one. We also rent a number of military, exotic, and even fully automatic firearms.

What classes and training do you provide? Nexus provides classes and training for shooters at all levels. We have classes for concealed weapons permits, first time shooters, women and youth and basic firearm operation for all different gun types. We offer advanced training every Wednesday and Thursday night with our Elite drills. Nexus also offers private lessons to custom tailor the training to the individual’s needs. All classes are taught by our highly experienced NRA certified instructors.

Is it expensive to visit Nexus Shooting?

What distinguishes Nexus from its competitors? Nexus is the only 5 star rated range in all of South Florida and is one of only 51 in the entire nation (out of an estimated 18,000 ranges) to have received this distinction. We received this award through our dedication to providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience as well as industry leading customer service.

safe, environment for all shooters by qualifying guests who wish to practice these skills through our multi-level licensing system to ensure they can do so proficiently and safely. There is a short qualification test for each of the three levels (Rapid Fire, Operator, and Elite) which is overseen by one of our NRA certified instructors. Once a guest reaches the Elite level, they are invited to participate in our weekly Elite drill nights where we set up an entire obstacle course in our tactical bay and we practice room clearing, shooting on the move, and other tactical and competition based skills.

The Nexus Lanes... real gun, real ammo, real fun!

Describe your staff. Our staff is friendly,

highly trained, and professional. They are experts at guiding our customers in renting and trying different firearms or purchasing one in our state- of- the- art showroom. Our certified instructors also provide basic and advanced training.

Describe the membership requirement and benefits. Nexus has one of the best mem-

berships in the industry, only $10 for a lifetime membership that comes with a LOT of amenities. This gives you access to our range, creates a digital account to store your scores from the electronic Nexus Lanes, access to members only promotions and discounts such as our free classes for firearm law and youth safety, and tracks your spending for reward points.

What kind of licenses are available? We

like to be flexible with the kind of practice our guests do. Rapid fire, holster draws, prone positioning and shooting on the move are all permitted. However, at the same time, we provide a

You might think we are the most expensive shooting range in the world based on the high level of amenities and the first class environment we provide, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. All of our pricing is comparable to any local store and range. We understand that our guests work hard for their money, and we feel that Nexus provides a nicer environment and experience for the same price. Who wouldn’t want to drive a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota? That’s the value we provide. Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. It is open from Monday-Friday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For information call 954-5878005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www. Santa Claus Is Ready To Make His Annual Visit BY JILL SHARPE

Santa Sleighs ready to roll last Christmas.

S

anta Claus will make an early Christmas E ve visit to the chil-

dren of Plantation, not by sleigh but by police and fire escort. Once again, the City of Plantation is organizing its annual “Santa’s Visit”, as it’s done for almost five decades, to bring some early holiday cheer to Plantation’s youngest residents. Cheryl Greenberg, publicity coordinator for the City, said this is something that families look forward to every year. “Santa’s visit will take place throughout the City from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24th. 17 teams of Santa and his elves will ride down Plantation’s streets, preceded by a police car with sirens blaring announcing their arrival. Santa will hand out candy canes and wave to the children. This beloved annual event began in the 1960s. On Christmas Eve each year Mayor Jim Ward would dress as Santa and travel about Plantation wishing children and adults a Merry Christmas. In 1966, the City Council agreed to expand

et Japanese Buff

the tradition to three motorcades to accommodate the cities growth and ensure that all the Plantation children would get to see Santa. Fast forward to today and the mission takes on an even bigger scope thanks to the City’s tremendous continued growth. City staff members and their family members now make up the 17 different Santa teams, complete with elves, sleighs and police escorts. It all comes together to help give the children an early visit with the famous man in the red coat. “It takes a small army of volunteers these days,” said Greenberg. “The smiles on the kids faces make it all worthwhile though.” Children and their families are urged to listen for the sirens announcing the arrival of Santa Claus on December 24th anywhere from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. When they hear the sirens residents should just head outside and wait curbside. Santa will be giving out candy canes to all the good little boys and girls waiting for him. For more information call 954-452-2510.

St. Gregory the Great – Students Fulfill a Tradition of Giving to Others By Jill Sharpe

S

tudents at St. G regory the G reat Parish and School in

Plantation, participate in many service projects. Most recently, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders at the school collected 170 pieces of luggage filled to the brim with essentials for foster kids in the community. The project, called “Bags N’ Stuff” was started by former St. Gregory student, Adam Azan. Six years ago, Azan came up with the idea and initiated it as his 7th grade service project. It was so successful and so well received that the school continued it every year since. The mission of the project is to provide “luggage with love” to foster children of all ages. Azan said foster children oftentimes arrive to their foster home with nothing more than the clothes on their backs or they are given garbage bags when they are removed from an abusive home or when they are transferred to other facilities and age out of foster care. “The emergency bags let the children know that they are important enough to have new necessities carried in a duffle bag, not a trash bag,” Azan said.

On October 16th, 170 canvas duffle bags filled with t-shirts, socks, blankets, toiletries as well as personal notes and prayer cards from the students at St. Gregory were loaded up and delivered by the Azan family to foster children of various ages. “The personalized notes and prayer tags in each bag are important so the foster kids know they really matter,” said Azan. Donna Wells, Development Director for St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, said it is important for St. Gregory students to be involved in this type of project because it helps them develop a personal spirituality based on prayer, faith, tradition, relationship with community and living their faith in the world through service. In the past two school years St. Gregory the Great students participated in many service projects to help others in the community. This Thanksgiving students collected $1100 and donated 110 gift cards to Wal-Mart to help families in need through Catholic Charities. At Christmas students collected $3100 in a read-a thon and purchased 310 gift cards for families in need through Catholic Charities. During Catholic School Week students and their parents collected over $8000 in donations for families in need. During the Advent season the students collected over $3600 in money to donate to the Rice Bowl Catholic Relief Services. In May 2012 students donated over $700 to the Endowed Scholarship Fund to help families in need of tuition assistance. Class service projects include the following: PK-3 Service project was for Broward Children’s Surgery. Students collected crayons, markers. puzzles, storybooks etc. for children who are going into surgery. PK-4 Service project was for Ann Stork. Students decorated boxes for Christmas and filled them with school supplies and little toys totaling $500. Students also have an ongoing Toy Foundation for orphan children. They are collecting new or gently used stuffed animals, so far totaling $1,500.

December 2014 | Our City Plantation

Kindergarten service project was Band Aids for Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. They collected fun Band Aids like Hello Kitty, Disney characters etc. to put smiles on the children’s faces. The total was $800. 1st grade service project this year was to bring in used toys for children in Colombia. The students were able to collect over 1,000 toys totaling $3,000. 2nd grade service project this year was the Pajama Project. Students donated 109 pairs of children’s pajamas. Each pair was matched with a book from Scholastic Books. The donation went to the Palm Beach County, Florida Chapter for Women and Children with a total of $1090. 3rd grade service project was collecting dimes for the Junior Diabetes Foundation. Students collected $1,100. 4th grade service project was Easter Baskets for Big Mama in Ft. Lauderdale. Students collected 80 baskets totaling $800. 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade service project was “the bags n stuff” . Students provided about 170 duffel bags filled with supplies, underclothing, socks, toys, etc. The value is about $9000. Whether you are refinancing or purchasing, getting a mortgage is one of the largest financial transactions most of us will ever make. Make your mortgage loan process easier. How much can I afford? – Your lender will be able to tell you the amount you qualify for based on your income and the debts that appear on your credit report. While this information is very important, you must consider your other monthly expenses, such as food, electric and water. To get a true picture of what you can afford, work with a lender that has your total financial well being in mind. What is the interest rate? Is it fixed or adjustable? – This is the most important figure to obtain as you will most likely have this loan for a number of years. A loan with a fixed interest rate affords you a predictable amount of interest expense for your home. An adjustable-rate mortgage may be lower; however, the payment can be unpredictable. Discuss this with your lender. How much money will I need to close on the loan? – Mortgages can include down payments and fees for various services that lenders and other parties involved in the transaction provide. Ask for a good faith estimate up front so you can plan accordingly. Mortgage rates are now historically low and houses are still favorably priced. Whether you are refinancing or purchasing a home, enlist the help of a professional in the industry. Mortgage professionals will help you find the right mortgage loan; Realtors offer the expertise on the housing market and will guide you through the process of purchasing the right home for the right price. Title Agents will ensure that you are the rightful owner of the property and Inspectors will ensure that your property has no hidden hazards or defects. Work with the best local professionals to ensure a smooth, easy, and fulfilling transition into your new home. Congratulations-you’ve earned it! ing off! Does that mean you are completely done? Not so fast! After you complete your treatment here, your orthodontist will recommend you wear a retainer. This must be worn routinely after treatment in order to hold your teeth in their proper, new position, while your gums, ligaments and bones adapt. Most patients are required to wear their retainer every night at first, with many also being directed to wear them during the day. It’s important to know there are different kinds of retainers.

Here are the differences between them:

▸▸ Hawley Retainers. The Hawley retainer is one of the most common types of retainers. It is a removable retainer made of a combination of a metal wire that typically surrounds the six anterior (front) teeth and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while the wire and acrylic framing keeps your teeth in an ideal position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors or patterns. ▸▸ Essix (Clear) Retainers. The Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of your teeth. This clear or transparent retainer fits over the entire arch of teeth and is produced from a mold. Similar to Invisalign’s clear aligner trays, Essix retainers have no metal or wires. They can also be used to produce minor tooth movements and can be helpful in prevention of tooth wear due to tooth grinding at night. ▸▸ Bonded (Lingual) Retainers. The Lingual retainer is placed on the back sides of your teeth, so no one will ever know it is there! Lingual retainers are also permanent, so there’s no risk of losing them. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep your bonded retainers clean. When brushing, make sure to carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth, as well as the wire itself. The retention phase of treatment begins when the patient’s braces are removed. Retainers are worn full time, initially (except while eating), then eventually just at night time when the bite is stable. Retainers should also be removed before brushing your teeth. Remember, wearing your retainer is an investment in your smile. If you fail to wear it consistently, the tissues that support your teeth will be unsupported, and you may begin to experience noticeable shifting. You’ve worked hard to get that beautiful smile — your retainer will let you keep it! If you have any questions about the retainers we offer or to learn more about post-orthodontic treatment, call Plantation Orthodontist Dr. Michael Maruri at 954-473-6900 for your free consultation. After school and weekend appointments are conveniently available. The office is located behind the Fountains Shoppes at 815 S University Dr., Suite 100 in Plantation.

Pinched Nerves in the Foot By Dr. Robert Sheinberg

N

erves are small string - like structures that

provide sensation and/or give the signal to muscles to move. Some nerves may be susceptible to injury because of their location in the foot or ankle. The most commonly injured nerves are on the ball of the foot, located at the base of the second, third and fourth toes. These nerves provide sensation only to the middle three toes and may be compressed by a ligament that runs over it. Here is a look at the symptoms, causes and treatment options for pinched nerves in the foot. Symptoms: ▸▸ Pain on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Numbness, burning, shooting or tingling sensation in the toes. Some or all of these symptoms may be present. ▸▸ Cramping in the toes. ▸▸ Aggravated by running, aerobics or activities that put stress on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Pain may be lessened by taking the shoe off and rubbing the foot. ▸▸ Driving may aggravate the ball of the foot. Causes: ▸▸ Compression of the nerves against a tight ligament. ▸▸ Arthritis or bone spurs from the adjacent joints. ▸▸ Soft tissue cysts causing nerve compression. ▸▸ Trauma to the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Nerve may become irritated from tight shoes or sports that put stress on the ball of the foot, especially tennis and running. The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation around the nerve and prevent further trauma to it. Treatment options include: ▸▸ Anti-inflammatories may be used to lessen inflammation; oral medication or cortisone injections may be beneficial. ▸▸ Changing to wider shoes without a heel. ▸▸ Changing activities temporarily from weight bearing exercises to biking and swimming. ▸▸ Physical therapy may be of benefit in reducing inflammation. ▸▸ Metatarsal pads. ▸▸ Orthotics to correct faulty biomechanics. They can be used in small heels and all sports shoes. ▸▸ Localized injections into the nerve to stop the nerve from functioning. Removing the nerve surgically may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. This is an outpatient procedure. A local or twilight anesthesia is used. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. One or two days off of work is needed. A surgical shoe is worn for four to five days and then a sneaker may be used. Postoperative pain is minimal. The patient progresses to regular shoes over a two to four week period. Certain activities such as biking and swimming can be done in a week; sports may take three to eight weeks to resume. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His favorite toy is his grandpa Freddy as he loves nibbling in his ear and pecking at him while grandpa is distracted. Papito loves to watch T.V. with Alejandra.
