Just a few hours from home we were able to spend an afternoon riding roller coasters and coming face to face with jungle creatures at Busch Gardens, only to spend the evening watching the sun set over a beautiful beach. That brief getaway was just what I needed to recharge my batteries. I came back to the office full of energy and memories of quality time spent with my family. City’s Annual Royal Easter Egg Hunt Ready to Roll By Julie Levin

t is one of the surest

signs of spring, and most anticipated days of the year for young children. The City of Plantation and the Plantation Woman’s Club will once again host their annual Royal Easter Egg Hunt just before Easter Sunday. Thousands of candy-filled eggs will once again be rolled out across Pop Travers Field in Plantation for hundreds of youngsters to seek out. The Children that find specially decorated Royal Easter Egg Hunt is set eggs get free prizes to take home for April 19 at the field, which is located at 6250 S.W. 16 Street. The Royal Easter Egg Hunt is a quick-moving event, so parents want to be sure to have their little ones there well ahead of the 10 a.m. start time, basket or bags in hand, so they don’t miss out on all the fun. Once the “go” signal is given at 10 a.m., it doesn’t take long before all of the eggs are scooped up. “We start right on time, so everyone should be there early,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city of Plantation. The city is expecting anywhere from 450-500 kids to take part. Organizers also put close to one hundred specially decorated eggs on the fields that the children can turn in for a special prize. To make sure children of all ages have a chance to find eggs, children ages 3-10 will be divided by age and sent to a specific field to find and pick-up their

eggs. The age groups will be 3&4 year olds, 5&6 years old, 7&8 year old and 9 &10 year olds. Organizers are asking that parents stay on the sidelines so the little ones can have the joy of finding eggs on their own. Easter Sunday falls on April 20 and is typically the most well-attended day of the year in Christian Churches. Traditions associated with the festival include the Easter rabClose to 500 children raced into action bit, a symbol of fertility, and at a previous Easter Egg Hunt colored Easter eggs painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring and a symbol of birth. The City of Plantation’s Royal Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 19th, beginning at 10 a.m. sharp. The event is free and the Royal Easter Bunny will also be on hand for photos. Plantation Couple Helps Disabled Golfers Get Back in the Game By Jill Sharpe

lantation residents Ryan and Amanda Chiplock are on a mission to change the lives of people who enjoy the game of golf but for some reason feel like they can no longer play anymore. The Chiplock’s are certified adaptive golf coaches who provide individual and group golf instruction for people with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities. They operate a non-profit organization in Plantation called Playing Through Adaptive Golf Institute, Inc. and run a regular Tuesday afternoon open practice program at Weston Hills Country Club. They are also currently developing mobile programs which will allow them to travel to many South Florida groups, community centers, homes, rehabilitation centers and even parks to provide adaptive golf

instruction for people with disabilities. Ryan Chiplock, a golf instructor for seven years who initially taught able-bodied people, first became interested in the idea of adaptive golf when his father started to have limitations playing golf due to hip replacements and back surgery. “I knew that there was a way to get my father back on the course, to enjoy the game he loved, even though he did not have the same physical capabilities he once had,” said Chiplock. “I tried some adaptive golf techniques and they worked. The experience inspired me to want to help more people in much the same way.” These days the Chiplocks work with people who have had brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and even those who have lost limbs. Every player has different goals and there is no such thing as a typical golfer in the program. Some players want to participate in tournaments, some want to hit the ball 100 yards again and some want to simply enjoy the fresh air and good company. “We help each one get to where they want to be,” said Chiplock.

Summer Fun Awaits at Plantation Day Camps By Julie Levin

t is hard to

believe, but the kids will be out of school soon and looking for a way to stay busy. Whether your child loves sports, swimming or arts and crafts, the City of Plantation has a variety of camps promising adventure, fun and learning. Now is the time to get those camp registrations in, as the lottery for spots will be held April 28th. Here’s a look at some of what’s available: The City’s popular Day Camps will again be offered for ages 5-11 at Central Park and Volunteer Park. The camps are designed to give the child a well-rounded camp experience, with weekly activities including sports, arts & crafts, ﬁeld trips, swim trips and special events. Older children, ages 12-14, have the option of Adventure Camp at Central Park, which provides teens with more specialized field trips and higher level activities. There is also Neighborhood Day Camp for 5-11 year olds offered at the Jim Ward Community Center. The camp is designed to give the child an on-site day camp experience. Activities there include sports, arts & crafts, special events, but no additional field trips.

As part of its slate of camps, organizers are also offering a specialized sports camp. It’s called Camp ELITE and city organizers brought it onboard last year to fill a need for young athletes in the city. “We had been asked over the years if we had a sports camp, so we thought it was a good time to bring it in and see what the response was,” said Shannon Ryan, Superintendent of Facilities. Geared for youngsters ages 7-12 and offered at Volunteer Park, Camp Elite focuses on the “whole athlete” and prepares them to be exceptional on and off the field. Offered by Pear Programs, the innovative program includes activities designed to enhance performance, develop strength to prevent injury, as well as equip athletes to manage emotional challenges and develop the leader within. Sports include, but are not limited to football, soccer, basketball, baseball and softball. Weekly activities will also include ﬁeld trips, swim trips and special events. If your child wants to take a swing at tennis, try the Summer Tennis Camp and Pool program at Veltri Tennis Center and Central Park, for kids ages 6-16. This camp includes lessons, match play and tennis games. You can also have them tee off for a summer of golf fun. The Golf Academy at Plantation Preserve is under new ownership. PGA professionals Barry Fitzpatrick and Nick Pincket are providing a junior golf program. Call 954-914-3731 for details. The camps are operated and run by the City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten Offers an Enriching Pre-School Experience for your Child By Julie Levin

dren is one of the most important things a parent strives for. Even at a young age, we want the very best educational setting we can find for them. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in Plantation Acres has been educating young minds for nearly three decades with an unique, academic environment. Recently Kathie Geller O’Dwyer, the Owner/ Director of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, answered some commonly asked questions about her school.

What type of curriculum does Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten use? DPK utilizes a cur-

riculum I created called “The Learning Ladder”. This curriculum covers all the different areas of learning in a hierarchy of skills. I was a pioneer in the Child Care industry in implementing a cognitive curriculum of this type.

Please tell us a little bit about the facility? The 10,000 square foot, free-

standing building is built on three acres of land with plenty of room for active preschoolers. There are ten spacious classrooms, a library, music room, gymnasium, Spanish language lab and computer room.

Please tell us about your background. I hold a Master’s Degree

What is Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? Developmental Pre-School and

Kindergarten was created to be an academic, enriching environment for children ages 20 months through 6 years of age. The goal of the school is to build a strong, energetic “learner” who utilizes all his/her senses to glean information and analyze it’s meaning. I sought to return to work as a speech and language pathologist outside the home when my children were two and three years of age. Unable to find a pre-school that would enhance my children’s interest to learn academics and have fun at the same time, I embarked upon the creation of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in order to fulfill this goal.

I was the Director of Speech and Language Services at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and Blind and the District Diagnostician for St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. I moved to South Florida in 1982 and built my first nursery school in 1985.

How long have you been in South Florida?

We have been serving the Plantation, Sunrise, Davie and Weston communities for 27 years.

Do you offer flexible scheduling?

Depending upon the age of the children, students may attend two, three or five days a week. The academic day runs from 8:30 a.m. though 2:00 p.m. depending on age parameters. Extended day hours are available from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Do you offer a summer camp program? In

addition to DPK’s academic year that coincides with the Broward County School calendar, DPK offers a wonderful, action packed Summer Camp called Camp Phoenix, that includes swimming daily in our large, heated swimming pool. Beginning in April, DPK offers swim instruction with a licensed Water Safety instructor that is open to the community.

What else would you like us to know about Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? I feel that I cannot do a bet-

Plantation Resident Leads 5K/WALK to Stop Drunk Driving By Julie Levin

who knows only too well the devastation caused by drunk driving, close to 2,000 people will once again come together in an ongoing fight to help stop drunk driving. They will gather May 4 for the 2014 Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K, which will begin early in the morning at Huizenga Park. The runners and walkers will be Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K chairperson Heather led by Heather Geronemus, whose Geronemus and Emcee Tony Segreto father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. “No child, parent, family member, or friend should have to go through losing someone they care for as a result of drunk driving,” said Geronemus. “This event will continue to raise funds to educate our community on the dangers of drunk driving, provide victim support and youth programs to stop this violent crime.” WALK Like MADD & MADD Dash is MADD’s (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) annual signature walk, which takes place in more than 60 cities in the U.S. Since it was established locally in 2011, the Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised more than $250,000 for MADD Broward & Palm Beach, with all proceeds benefitting community education, victim support services and youth programs. Anticipating nearly double the 2013 turnout, Geronemus said awareness about the event, and continued education in schools and in the community, is finally

making a difference. “People are now hearing about MADD in all walks of life,” said Geronemus, who works for event sponsor Ultimate Software. Geronemus said she is frequently contacted by people from all over who share their heartbreaking stories of drunk driving, and are now committed to fighting back. Plantation Jazz Pianist Hits the Right Chord with Renowned Band By Julie Levin

s the son of a professional violinist,

Max Holm seemed to have a future carved out for himself that involved playing a string instrument. But when the 17-year old Plantation teen was introduced to the piano four years ago at a recital, he was hooked. “I had to confess I liked it better,” Holm said.”That’s when it all started.” After hours of practicing and perfecting his craft, the Junior at Dillard Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale has reached new heights. Holm was recently chosen for Jazz Band of America, where he was showcased at the Yamaha Music for All Festival in Indianapolis last month. As a national stage for the top high school jazz musicians, it is also a world-class learning experience with master teachers, artists and conductors from all over. “I met so many great players that are my age from around the country and around the world. We work together, we play together and that’s how we get better at what we do,” said Holm. “The other thing I love about winning these competitions is that I get to meet master teachers and legendary musicians. I learn so much from them.” Holm was one of thousands of American high school students who auditioned for the prestigious honors band. Most positions accept several musicians who play the same instrument, but only one

pianist. Holm’s improvisational skills were featured during ten songs. Max, who grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, has been living in South Florida for seven years. In addition to the Jazz Band of America, he already has a list of achievements to his name. He performs with the Dillard Jazz Ensemble, which has won the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition twice in the last four years. Essentially Ellington is the premier competition for high school age jazz musicians. It’s also where Holm had a chance to meet jazz master Wynton Marsalis. His Max Holm Quartet was chosen to play at the 1st Annual Miami Beach Jazz Festival at the legendary Fillmore, opening for Michelle Coltrane. He recently performed at the Tampa Convention Center as part of the Florida All-State Jazz Ensemble, and also just won the UCF Jazztet competition. After high school, Holm hopes to attend a top music school, maybe Julliard, where he can look forward to a future in music. “If you don’t have a passion for it, I don’t think it will take you that far. Students Send Handmade Rockets Airborne By Julie Levin

Elementary School recently had the chance to see the final, airborne result of an innovative on-going science project. Thanks to the instructors and students at Plantation High School’s renowned Aerospace Engineering Design & Technology program, the elementary students finally had the chance to launch small rockets they had been designing and building. The students launched their rockets at the PAL field over the course of two weeks in late February and early March. The first week, second and third graders sent their projects airborne, and the following week, fourth and fifth graders launched rockets which carried eggs. All told, they launched over forty rockets and not a single egg from the older kids’ rockets broke, said Joseph Vallone, Plantation High’s Aerospace Instructor. “If we don’t foster this kind of interest in our generations moving forward, we are not going to be a world leader anymore,” he said. The launch was the result of an “open lab night” outreach program Vallone and his students created for Peters Elementary students. Once a week, students in

grade 2-5 were invited to Plantation High to design, build, and launch real rockets. The 2nd and 3rd grade students gathered in the school’s cafeteria where they created small solid fuel rockets and learned the basic physics of rocketry, flight dynamics, and construction. Students in the older grades had the chance to build their rockets from scratch using simulation software to design custom rocket components and then use high school’s 2D Laser Cutter and 3D Printer. The purpose of their project was to find a design that would cushion an egg in flight without breaking it. The educational partnership, fostered by Plantation High School Principal Alona DiPaolo and Peters Elementary Principal Kathy Sedlack, was designed as an opportunity to improve the technological literacy of young students and let them get excited about STEM careers at an early age. The Plantation High School Aerospace Engineering Technology & Design program is a 4-year program that teaches students the entire engineering process: coding of hardware and software, electronics, materials, propulsion and more. (1st-5th grade) ~ Two 4-week sessions 6/9-7/3 & 7/7-8/1. Students will review and/or fill in educational gaps in reading, reading comprehension, writing and mathematics, while enjoying a relaxed academic setting.

he arch of a person ’ s foot is the main sup -

porting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

CAUSES:

▸▸ Loose or weak ligaments of the arch are the most common reason. ▸▸ Bone abnormalities that may be hereditary or acquired from injury (tarsal coalitions or fractures). ▸▸ Trauma to tendons and ligaments on the inside of the arch and ankle may cause the arch to slowly or acutely drop (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction).

SYMPTOMS:

▸▸ Pain in the arch, feet, ankles and legs aggravated by standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Leg cramps and pain at times during the night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue during activity or simple walking. ▸▸ Weakness in the legs during running. ▸▸ Stiffness and pain in the lower back, especially in the morning. ▸▸ Lack of interest in participating in sports or activities that require running. ▸▸ Poor cardiovascular fitness.

SIGNS:

▸▸ Flat arch when standing is most common. The arch may look normal off weightbearing. ▸▸ Many arches appear normal when standing but the front part of the foot points out compared to the rearfoot. This is a foot that functions like a flat foot and may be a problem. ▸▸ When looking at the feet from behind the heel bone appears to turn out. ▸▸ Knock-knees. ▸▸ Feet and ankles look abnormal. Bulging of the bone on the inside of the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Abnormal gait with the feet excessively turned out. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ People usually are overweight due to lack of exercise.
