Happy Mother’s Day!
Y
ou ’ ve probably heard the expression “April
showers bring May flowers.” Well, the timing couldn’t be better because flowers are a beautiful way to show Mom how much you love and appreciate her. Let’s all take a little pause and honor our mothers, and the mothers of our children, for all they do. They work hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us every single day. Let’s set aside one day and pamper them for a change! May also signifies that summer is just around the corner. Before we know it, school will be done, the afterschool activities will be over, and the pressures of everyday life will be eased just a little. This is the time to relax and enjoy our time together…because August will be here in a blink of an eye. Sincerely,

Purim 5K “Run With The Rabbi” Brings Temple Congregation Together in a New Way By Jill Sharpe
S
ome of the runners who participated in Temple
Kol Ami Emanuel’s first annual 5K Purim Run came dressed in costume. Others just came to try and outrun the Rabbi. Everyone who participated had a good time and many said they can’t wait to do it again next year. Temple Kol Ami Emanuel is an almost 40 year old synagogue but their new Rabbi is all about doing new things to appeal to congregants in today’s world. Part of that effort is to provide different ways to bring the congregation together. It’s a recipe that’s definitely appealing to many as more than 600 congregants participated in the 5K event on March 16th. “We’re redefining what a synagogue means,” said Rabbi Howard Needleman. “An event like this is also beneficial because it’s about encouraging healthy bodies.” This year Jon Williams came in first place overall in the men’s category. Caryn Lubetsky placed first Rabbi Needleman making his way to the overall for the women. top of the rock wall at the Purim Carnival. Jorge Lopez was the top master male runner and Abby Wilentz was the top master female runner. Rabbi Needleman and his wife Beth were awarded first place in the Rabbinical category. All together the temple awarded more than 500 medals, gave out 450 t-shirts and handed out 500 goodie bags. All of the net proceeds were donated to kids programming, special needs programming, and to need-based early childhood scholarships at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in memory of 16-year-old Harry Narkes who died in a car acciBeth Needleman and Tracy Kahn dent almost 10 years ago. Immediately following the run, participants enjoyed the tradition of the temple’s annual Purim Carnival. Complete with food trucks, bounce houses, rock climbing walls, carnival games, face painting, pony rides and a magician there was never a dull moment. Everyone had a blast from start to finish.

Plantation Resident David Samson Strikes Out On “Survivor” By Jill Sharpe
A
s President of the M iami Marlins ,
David Samson knows that if you lose one baseball game, you get to play again the next day. Samson learned quickly however, that when your torch gets snuffed out on Survivor, you’re going home and you won’t get to play again. The Plantation resident has watched the show “Survivor” since the year it began in 2000, which was also his first year in Major League Baseball. “I knew immediately I wanted to play the game of “Survivor” and was just waiting for a good time in my life,” he said. “At the end of 2012, I realized there never was going to be a good time, so I decided to just go for it and apply. The day after I did, I got a call and was officially cast in January 2013”.
Survivor Host Jeff Probst snuffed out the flame on David Samson’s torch as his teammates chose Samson the first contestant to be voted off Survivor Cagayan. Monty Brinton/AP

Arriving on the island of Cagayan by helicopter was Samson’s favorite part of the experience as he said everything just went downhill from there. “From the moment I found out that the teams would be divided into brains, beauty and brawn, I knew my days were numbered,” said Samson. Arriving at the island wearing a navy blue blazer, Samson looked ready to lead the Brains team but he said had he known how the teams would be divided, he never would have worn the blazer. “Before the game began, I was thinking the blazer would serve as an extra layer and might come in handy if my clothes got wet. I also thought I could use it as a pillow.” Samson’s attire was the beginning of his downfall as he was indeed chosen to be the first to lead his tribe. As tribe leader, Samson’s first decision was a costly one that ultimately led to his demise. He was asked to identify the weakest link and everyone was surprised when he chose Garrett, the biggest and strongest member of the Brains tribe. “I chose Garrett because the other two tribes had already chosen their weakest link and I thought it would be a good idea to choose someone opposite from the type they had chosen. I also thought Garrett
would be a formidable player down the road and wanted him out of the way.” As it turned out Garrett was sent back to camp where he found a clue, located the immunity idol and vowed to get rid of Samson. The Brains tribe performed terribly in the first immunity challenge and was sent to tribal council where Samson was indeed the first player voted off Survivor Cagayan. In parting, Samson said he considers himself the luckiest person in the world. “I’m lucky because I have my health, my kids are healthy, I live in paradise and I’ve been able to do some pretty extraordinary things in my life,” Samson said. Following Survivor, Samson performed in a play about Saturday Night Live, playing the part of Lorne Michaels at the South MiamiDade Cultural Arts Center for a four week run. It was actually Samson’s second time on stage. In 1990, he co-wrote and performed a play entitled “Do I Do” to benefit the New Theatre in Coral Gables. As President of the Marlins, Samson is often in the spotlight so it’s not too far of a stretch for him to be in the spotlight on stage. What’s next for Samson? “I’m always looking for new challenges and to get out of my comfort zone,” said Samson. “I don’t know what’s next but I promise it will be something interesting.”

Plantation Girl Collects Shoes For Needy Children By Jill Sharpe
T
hirteen year old Plantation resi dent Tiernan Ramer is putting her best foot forward to help others. Ramer, who started collecting shoes for needy kids about a year ago, has collected nearly 1000 pairs including several hundred at a recent shoe drive at her school, Seminole Middle. Ramer’s interest in collecting shoes for kids who need them, started when she decided to enter a contest sponsored by the Mattel Toy Company who makes her favorite line of dolls called “Monster High”. Mattel had a contest asking fans of the dolls to start their own charity and become philanthropists. Ramer chose to collect shoes over anything else because nice shoes are one of the signature items of the Monster High dolls she loves. She also chose to collect shoes because they are something that every kid needs. “A lot of people collect toys and canned goods but not very many people think about collecting shoes,” Ramer said. In the first few months of the drive, she calls “Soles for Souls”, Ramer was so successful that Mattel announced she was one of the top five winners of their philanthropy contest. Her prize was a donation of $1,000 to Ramer’s chosen charity, In Jacob’s Shoes. In Jacob’s Shoes, is a local non-profit that helps clean, refurbish, re-sole, re-lace and distribute all the shoes that Ramer collects to needy students in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. In Jacobs Shoes sends shoes that can’t be perfectly refurbished to Haiti. They also send severely damaged shoes, and shoes that don’t come in a pair, to Nike who breaks them down and uses them to make soft flooring for outdoor playgrounds. “People like knowing where the shoes they donate are going,” said Ramer. “They really like that these shoes are going on the feet of kids in our community.” In August, Ramer spent her 13th birthday working at a special back to school distribution at the BB&T center as a personal shoe shopper for families in need. One young girl, who Ramer fitted with a pair of boots with rainbow laces, made a lasting impression. “It just felt so wonderful that a pair of boots I collected made this little girl so happy.” The response Ramer has received from the people she is helping has made her want to keep going and increase her collections even more. “The support I’ve received from my school and from local businesses has been great,” Ramer said. “Bella Hair Salon and Central Park Vision are two of my collection sites and we are looking for more businesses who would like to participate.” “We’re also now working with the Plantation Athletic League to collect cleats for kids who want to play sports but can’t afford to buy special shoes. We’ve collected nearly 200 pairs of cleats so far.” Ramer’s ultimate goal is to collect 5000 pairs of shoes by the time she graduates high school. One of the ways she intends to reach that goal is by finding girls at other schools who want to partner with her

Rabbi Picked For Innovative Fellowship Program By Julie Levin
R
ecently a P lantation - based rabbi made
the first of four trips to New York to take part in a groundbreaking program designed to help today’s rabbis adapt to a changing religious landscape. Rabbi Andrew Jacobs, the spiritual leader at Ramat Shalom Synagogue, was one of just 21 rabbis selected for a prestigious national fellowship program known as “Rabbis Without Borders”. Now in its fifth year, the program is an initiative to help rabbis make Jewish thought and practice an accessible resource in today’s society. “The Jewish community is changing rapidly,” said Rabbi Jacobs.”While the traditional synagogue model is still of value, we need to rethink and reconstruct our community to meet the changing landscape. Rabbis Without Borders is designed to help rabbis think outside of the box--or borders--and inspire the Jewish community in new and creative ways.” More than 100 applicants competed for the program, which will meet to try and find the intersection between religion, politics, technology, and Jewish identity. It is a program from Clal, the national Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. From online learning to one-on-one dialogue, participants will work with Clal faculty to develop methodologies that draw on
the texts and tradition in new ways. The hope is to help the rabbis better communicate in both familiar and new venues. “People are so busy and so disconnected from spirituality and Jewish life. It is not enough to hold a program at the synagogue these days. We need to rely upon the internet, engage people in public spaces and get people talking about spiritual/Jewish issues during their everyday routine,” he said. Dealing with the packed family schedules of his congregants is something Rabbi Jacobs is already trying to combat. In his application to the fellowship program, he said one of the biggest challenges he has been working on is developing a new, accessible Hebrew school model, which will use online learning as part of the curriculum. In that way, students can learn when and where they can. Phone applications are a possibility as well. Rabbi Jacobs said he hopes to take what he learns, and expand the Jewish discussion beyond the walls of our synagogues. “ I plan to involve my Ramat Shalom family - while engaging the larger community,” he said. Rabbis Without Borders was listed this past year in the Slingshot Guide of the fifty most innovative Jewish organizations in America. Rabbi Andrew Jacobs

From 11 a.m - 2 p.m. gently used cocktail attire, prom dresses and after 5 p.m. accessories were collected outside of Lime Fresh Mexican Grill. In total, 464 dresses were collected for girls who might otherwise miss their big Prom. All items were donated to Becca’s Closet for local teens in need to use at their upcoming proms and formal events. Becca’s Closet is a locally based non-profit organization that collects and distributes formal dresses to
high school girls in honor of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman. Kirtman began the dress drive as a Sophomore at Nova High School in Davie when she collected and distributed over 250 dresses to girls in need in Broward. Her philosophy was that no one should have to miss an opportunity to celebrate with their friends at a dance because they can’t afford a gown. Kirtman›s family has kept her dream alive after her tragic death in a car accident in 2003, and to date has active chapters in

Plantation Team Wins Regional Science Bowl Competition By Jill Sharpe
U
.S. E nergy S ecretary E rnest M oniz recently announced that a team of students from American Heritage High School in Plantation was among 14 teams of middle and high school students who won their regional competitions for the 2014 National Science Bowl and are advancing to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. Energy Secretary Moniz congratulated the students and wished them the best of luck in the competition. “The National Science Bowl is significant because it challenges students to excel and heightens their interest in fields vital to America’s continued scientific advancement,” Secretary Moniz said. The top 16 high school teams and the top eight middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Prizes for the top two high school teams for the 2014 National Science Bowl will be announced at a later date. The high school team that won the 2013 National Science Bowl received a nine-day, all- expenses-paid science trip to Alaska, where they learned more about glaciology, marine and avian biology, geology and plate tectonics. The second-phase high school team at the 2013 National Science Bowl won a five-day, fully guided adventure tour of several national parks, which included a whitewater rafting trip.

The rehabilitation of the surgery consists of physical therapy with the objective to return the athlete to unrestricted sports activities in approximately six months. The success rate and achievement of this goal is very high and most patients are very happy that they had the surgery. Not everybody is a candidate for surgery and in this type of older sedentary patient a strenuous physical therapy protocol is established and with the protection of a brace most of them can return to sports. Understanding Home Equity Loans By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
A
What are the benefits?
s you look outside enjoying your morning
coffee, are you envisioning a new pool… maybe a hot tub? Well, good news, your home may be able to provide it to you!! Broward County home values went up 16.0% last year and Zillow predicts they will rise an additional 6.0% within the next year. What does that mean to homeowners? Should you sell or fix-up your current home? Many homeowners have elected to use their home equity to upgrade their current home. If you are in the market for a new kitchen, pool or even a debt consolidation loan, ask your local credit union about their affordable home equity loans. What is a Home Equity Loan? A home equity loan is a second mortgage that is secured by the equity in your home. The lender determines the equity based on the market value of your home minus what you owe.
▸▸ Home equity loans typically have lower interest rates than credit cards ▸▸ Fixed monthly payments with a home equity loan ▸▸ Interest cost on home equity loans may be tax deductible ▸▸ Borrowers may qualify for large loan amounts (based on built-up equity) ▸▸ Funds can be used for any purpose (college tuition, debt consolidation, home remodeling, etc) Any downside?
There are two types of home equity loans – which one is best for you? ▸▸ Fixed Rate Home Equity Loan. This loan provides a single-lump-sum payment to the borrower, which is repaid over a set period of time at an agreed-upon interest rate. It’s important to know that the payment and interest rate remain the same over the life of the loan. A fixed rate equity loan protects the borrower from interest rate increases and payment fluctuations throughout the life of the loan. ▸▸ Home Equity Line of Credit. This loan is a line of credit also known as a HELOC. The interest rate is variable and works like a credit card. The borrower is pre-approved for a certain spending limit and can withdraw money when they need it by simply writing a check. This line of credit is repaid based on the amount used and the current interest rate. The rate is based on an index, such as the Prime Rate, plus a margin and will vary with the index.
▸▸ Rate is usually higher than the first mortgage ▸▸ Adjustable monthly payments with a HELOC ▸▸ Risk of losing your home if loan is defaulted on ▸▸ Downturn of the housing market could put you owing more than the value Equity loans are not for everyone...but they could be perfect for you! Compare the different types of home equity loans and lenders; borrow only what you need and make sure the monthly payment is easily within your budget. Also, ask your neighborhood credit unions about current promotions such as “No Closing Costs”. For more information please contact us at 954-335-5100; www.priorityonefl.org or visit one of our branches located in Sunrise, at 3000 North University Drive; in Fort Lauderdale, at 1900 West Oakland Park Boulevard; or Coral Springs at 1700 North University Drive; Suite 100.

pet of the month
“Suki”
Suki is a two-year old Japanese Chin. Her favorite person is her dad and her favorite toys are her stuffed green Elmo and her red stuffed duck on a rope. She likes going anywhere, especially the park or Home Depot. She also enjoys being petted and having her picture taken by anyone she meets. She dislikes bath time and having mom put cologne on her. Her favorite thing to do is to go to the mall in her doggie stroller. Suki was last seen at the Las Olas Art Festival, charming the tourists.

A colorectal screening could save your behind, backside, rear-end, tushie, fanny, rump, heinie, keister, derrière, caboose, Colon cancer is the nation’s second-leading cause of cancer death. Every year, in this country alone, more than 142,000 men and women are diagnosed with the disease. And every year, for more than a third of them, it will have been caught too late. These people would tell you—beg you—to get screened now. To not put it off. Because, if caught early, colon cancer is highly treatable. And screenings are easy. So if you’re age 50 or older, get screened. If you have a family history of colon cancer, start at age 40. For more information about our colorectal services, visit BrowardHealth.org/Colon. To find a doctor, call the Broward Health Line at 954.759.7400.
