New 3D I-Cat SCaN teChNology at NaIDu orthoDoNtICS Naidu orthodontics’ investment in 3D It shows the correct root angulations and finds supernumerary teeth dental imaging technology provides best and their exact locations to communicate clinically correct information to oral surgeons to facilitate precise extractions and avoid possible results for their patients. The initial task, of any orthodontic treatment, is to establish and understand the exact tooth position Dr. Kistama Naidu, and relationship of the patient’s anatomy. This is traDMD, MS. Board Certified ditionally done using tooth impressions and molds as Orthodontist well as regular X-ray technology. These methods are often extensive and perceived by many patients as less than pleasant. However, capturing this information is critical to developing treatment options through a clinically responsible approach, while at the same time it controls radiation exposure to the patient. The office of Naidu Orthodontics recently introduced low dose I-Cat Scan technology – a first in Broward. This allows the precise capturing of 3D initial orthodontic workups and progress scans. At the same time this advanced technology reduces the applied X-ray dosage significant with a shortened scan time of just 4.8 seconds. why is accurate initial exploration important? Capturing precise accurate 3D views to analyze teeth, roots, TMJ, airway, and sinuses without magnification or distortion enhance the dental practice’s efficiency by capturing a complete workup in less than 10 seconds.

exploratory surgeries. It allows our office to replicate dental implants placements virtually using the convenient anchor pin library. Quickly and easily all the available images are compiled into a virtual study model service complete with crowns, roots, developing teeth, impactions and alveolar bone. With just one click, 3D cephalometric analysis are created, which also yields full traditional 2D analysis. why is low dose I-Cat Scan technology important? Traditional dental scanning technology utilizes the unique properties of X-rays to create a 2D image of the patient’s facial bones and teeth. The advanced I-CAT scan technology allows us to not only create a 3D image, but it also reduces the amount or dosage of X-ray exposure. In short, I-Cat Scan technology allows Naidu Orthodontics to gather more information in order to map the most effective, and least invasive, treatment plan for the best possible tooth realignment while minimizing the patient’s exposure.

You’re Never Too Old for a Spring Break
S
tudents shouldn ’ t be the only ones to enjoy
a Spring Break. This year, my family and I spent my sons’ Spring Break enjoying the wonders of Florida’s West Coast. Just a few hours from home we were able to spend an afternoon riding roller coasters and coming face to face with jungle creatures at Busch Gardens, only to spend the evening watching the sun set over a beautiful beach. That brief getaway was just what I needed to recharge my batteries. I came back to the office full of energy and memories of quality time spent with my family. Wherever your travel plans take you, now or in the future, don’t forget to bring along a copy of Our City Weston or Town Times magazine. Send us your picture posing with the magazine and you could be our Photo of the Month winner. In the coming weeks we will gather with our loved ones to celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays. For many of our readers, the holidays will not be a joyous time. They fear for their families as tensions rise in Venezuela under the communist dictatorship system. Please support our many Venezuelan neighbors and friends near and far as they fight to bring the current government regime to an end and let democracy rule.

*The Accelerated Death Benefit may or not qualify for a favorable tax treatment under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. This depends on factors such as your life expectancy at the time benefits are accelerated or whether you use the benefits to pay for required qualified long-term expenses. If the Accelerated Death Benefit qualifies the Benefit will not be subject to federal income taxation. Tax laws relating to the Accelerated Death Benefits are complex. You should consult with a tax advisor about how you can receive the Accelerated Death Benefit excludable from income under federal law. In addition, receipt of the Accelerated Death Benefit may affect your family’s eligibility for public assistance programs such as medical assistance (Medicaid), Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AGDC), supplementary social security income (SSI) and drug assistance programs. Preventive dental care
is important throughout your life, no matter your age. Keep your smile healthy by practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:
• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. • Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to
contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award. The five components are as follows: • Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. • Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with the use of the property. • Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? • Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. • Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Last year’s winners were: Lisa Sigelbaum and Vicki Mills (at large), Jan Scarth (District 2), Doris Wilk and Deborah Hasson (District 3), and Kristi Davis (District 4). Betty Davis plans to enter her yard this year. “It is important for property owners to take good care of their yards,” said Davis. “It increases the value of all of the homes around it and also makes the neighborhood look nice.” For information and an application, visit www.ppines.com or call 954-435-6513.

A
s the evolving real estate market
becomes increasingly intricate, buyers and sellers are seeking experts who understand the industry and are positioned to stay ahead of the game. Patrick Simm and The Simmsational Group at Keller Williams Realty have become well known for their outstanding level of Real Estate Sales Mastery. Within the last 12 months, the Simmsational Team has closed over 150 transactions and generated approximately $26 million in sales volume. They are ranked in the top 1% of all Realtors nationwide. The Simmsational Real Estate Group has been helping Southwest Broward’s buyers and sellers accomplish their real estate goals since 2001. Managing Director/Team Leader Patrick Simm, along with Kimberlee Hernandez and Jose Rodriguez, joined Keller Williams four years ago with the vision of creating an international team of specialized listing and buyer specialists. The team has since grown to a total of nine associates. “We are thrilled to have Patrick and his team here at Keller Williams,” said Natascha Tello, Broker and Operating Partner for Keller Williams Realty Partners SW. “Patrick is a bona- fide real estate superstar. He truly understands property values, positioning, and what it takes to get a home sold in today’s market. His customers, as well as real estate agents, are consistently impressed by his professionalism and high standards.” A single father of a thirteen-year-old daughter, Ariana, Patrick (known by many as “OneCoolRealtor”) was born in Kingston, Jamaica and has been a South Florida resident since 1973. After earning a Master of Business Administration Degree in Finance, he acquired his Real Estate License in 2001. He quickly became a graduate of the Realtor Institute, earning a GRI designation (along with only 9% of all Realtors). Patrick also holds other noteworthy designations from the National Association of Realtors that includes the ABR, Accredited Buyer Representative; CRS, Certified Residential Specialist (only 4% of all Realtors worldwide) and CDPE,

Patrick also keeps the public informed by writing real estate blogs and editorials for local magazines. Patrick Simm and the Simmsational Real Estate Group have become one of South Florida’s most prominent and informative sources for Cooper City, Davie, Miramar, Pembroke Pines and Weston Real Estate. The group consistently closes over $20 million in sales every year. “As a team, our goal is not only to meet our customers’ expectations, but to exceed them,” said Patrick. “As a trusted real estate partner, we help customers find the best home in the area within their price range. Together, we sell their home for as much as the market will bear and as quickly as possible.” The majority of Patrick’s business is generated from past customers and their referrals. “We treat our clients like family and take excellent care of them,” said Patrick. “We trust that they will come back to us for all their real estate needs and recommend us to their family, friends and associates.” Sue Aviles hired the Simmsational Real Estate Group to list and sell her home in Miramar. “Patrick and his team were extremely professional and knowledgeable,” said Sue. “They understood my needs and were quick to resolve any issues. This is the sixth time that I have listed a house and it was the best experience I have ever had. I give them an A+. I would never use another Realtor to buy or sell a home.”

Raymond Lowe, distressed and house hunting for 18 months prior, turned to the Simmsational Team for assistance. “Working with the Simmsational Team was an absolute pleasure!” said Raymond. “I highly recommend them to anyone who is in the market for a house. We got our dream home as promised due to the Team’s diligence and hard work during a difficult Seller’s market.” The Simmsational Team partners with attorneys and mortgage professionals to make the process as smooth as possible. “There is an absolute added value when choosing the services of the Simmsational Real Estate Group,” said Patrick, “Our Team’s Real Estate Attorney accommodates all our clients and is always available for consultation throughout the buying and/or selling process.” Patrick says that he is grateful to the residents of Southwest Broward, especially those in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, for their continuous support throughout the last twelve years that the Simmsational Real Estate Group was established to ultimately serve the residents of Southwest Broward County. “As a consequence of each and every buyer and seller’s unremitting confidence in our professionalism and knowledge of the local real estate market, we respectfully continue to achieve remarkable results beyond expectations,” said Patrick. “As the Team Leader/Managing Director, I am surrounded by a core group of skilled and dedicated real estate professionals. This is an accomplishment that merely started as a small “dream” just a little over 12 years ago. With continued assurance in our ability to fully accomplish your real estate goals, we look forward to serving the residents of Southwest Broward for many years to come.” The Simmsatonal Team at Keller Williams Realty is located at 2000 NW 150th Avenue, Suite #1100, in Pembroke Pines. Flanagan Debate Team Hosts First Tournament By Aisha Gaziani, Student Writer
T
he Flanagan High School debate team
recently hosted its first tournament, the Falcon Invitational. During the one-day, Saturday tournament, debaters walked throughout the campus navigating their way to different rounds of debate. The tournament was open to both novice and varsity members. There were many different types of competitive events. In Public Forum, debaters participated in five rounds, where they discussed whether developmental assistance should be prioritized over military aid in the Sahel region of Africa. Public Forum is one of several forms of debate, in which participants argue a topic of national or even international importance. Lincoln Douglas, on the other hand, is one-one debate practiced at the high school level. It is sometimes called “values” debate, because the format traditionally places a heavy emphasis on logic, ethical values and philosophy. In Original Oratory, participants deliver a tenminute, original speech. Although they can choose the subject, the speech has to be factual. Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation both consist of a selected piece from any public work like books, plays, movies and television shows. The participants
are judged based upon how the person portrays his or her characters and whether the piece is humorous or dramatic. In Public Forum, the topics of debate are chosen by the National Forensics League, but in Original Oratory, students get to select their own topics. Debate coach Susan McGraw, Flanagan High School debaters, and parent volunteers spent several weeks organizing the tournament. Falcon debaters and parent volunteers arrived early to help set up and make sure everything ran smoothly. By 8am, 400 students from 125 high school debate programs had arrived. Many of the participants were nervous as they waited for their judges to arrive. Nova High School freshman Madison Bober says she anxiously redacted her speech, while she waited for the judge. Bober says that debate has changed her life. “Debate has taught me how political problems impact the world,” said Bober. “Debate will also help me in the future due to the fact that I plan on attending Stanford University to study law and criminal justice.” The rounds went quickly. The judges enjoyed food catered from Pizza Mia in the Judges’ lounge, located in the library. Ron Kauffman, whose son Matthew
attends Miami Beach High School, judged five rounds of Public Forum debate. Kauffman said he had the best experience of his life. “It was amazing to see children at such a young age debate about real world problems,” said Kauffman. “It really made me feel proud to say my son was a part of debate. It’s shocking, because sometimes they use words I didn’t even know!” Once the rounds ended, the debaters took a break. They played football, mingled with other debaters and created dance circles. Fort Lauderdale High School debater Alana Harris was in the middle of the biggest dance circle. Harris, who has been in debate for the past two years, described how debate has influenced her way of speech and writing. “I believe I write and speak more formally than I used to,” said Harris. “This will help me when I take my SAT’s in December.” Harris says she entered the debate program as a freshman by mistake. Initially, she requested to switch out. After the third week of school, she decided to stay. “I wanted to switch out of debate as fast as I could,” said Harris. “Debate was a mistake, but now I realize debate was the best mistake I had ever made!” After the award ceremony, McGraw and Falcon debate students stayed to help clean up the school. “The Falcon Invitational was a complete success and we plan on hosting many more events in the future,” said McGraw Aisha Gaziani is a freshman at Flanagan High School, where she is a reporter on the school newspaper, The Raptor. She is also a member of Falcon Debate, where she participates in Public Forum Debate. Aisha spends her spare time reading and writing for her own pleasure.

Charter School’s East Campus enjoyed an all-expense paid trip around the world compliments of their children during the 10th Annual Multicultural Night. The evening was filled with cultural and educational celebrations. “The goal of our Multicultural Night is to foster an appreciation of the many cultures represented not only on our school’s campus and in our community, but the world over,” said Liz Mesa, East Campus Administrative Assistant. Some of the “stops” on the itinerary included the warm sands and beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean, the rainforests of South America, the historical wonders of Greece, the unique cultures of China, the architectural marvels of Egypt, the artistry of India, and more. The international travelers also enjoyed dancing and music in the amphitheater, colorful costumes, a super slide and an obstacle course, as well as a smorgasbord of international gourmet delights from the Food Trucks. “All this wonderful educational travel without ever having to pack a bag, get a passport or take off your shoes!” laughed Mesa. “Our families are international and especially love this annual event for its celebration of all cultures.” For information, visit www.pinescharter.net, call 954-443-4800 or send an email to LMesa@pinescharter.net.

Panther Run Students Enjoy the Fruits of Their Labor By Debby Teich
S
tudents at Panther R un E lementary are enjoying the fruits
of their labor - literally. They are learning how to grow fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in a school garden. They are also learning about healthy eating, as they sample what they grow. The school planted the first phase of its garden with the help of West Broward High School science teacher Gustavo Junco and some of his students. Junco started a school garden building club, Project Primal, as a way to educate the next generation on the benefits of healthy eating, as well as how to grow sustainably and organically, using energy, fertilizer, and water wisely. The garden was so successful that he decided to reach out to other schools in the area to help them build their own. West Broward students create the garden using donated materials and the hosting school maintains it. “Most students in the area are suburban kids with little exposure to farming,” said Junco. “The garden shows the kids where their food comes from and teaches them healthy eating habits. Many have never seen fresh vegetables growing in a garden and are fascinated the first time they see a tomato ripening on the vine. The garden also teaches the kids about the renewable resources, such as fuel, that can be made from agricultural commodities.” In January 2012, Matthew Lenardson, a senior at West Broward, approached Panther Run about serving as a pilot school for Project Primal. As a Panther Run alumnus, he was excited to give back to his elementary school by building a garden. He teamed up with his Eagle Scout troop, as well as other West Broward students, including many that had also attended Panther Run. They made three planter boxes out of Melaleuca trees and filled them with soil. They planted tomatoes, radishes, carrots, and more. For the next few months, Matthew Lenardson and Alexsandra Bello visited with the elementary students to teach them about the benefits of sustainable gardens. “It was a wonderful lesson in the importance of paying it forward,” said Elaine

Saef, principal. “The kids came back to their old school for the project. Hopefully our current students will do the same thing.” Kathy Garcia, science teacher, is responsible for maintaining the garden and has incorporated it into her curriculum. During science specials, all of the students in the school visit the garden to plant seeds, water, weed, and measure growth. They are learning how to care for the different species of plants, as well as how and when to harvest the food. The school has expanded the garden since the initial project was completed. A community engineer added two large boxes. Kindergarten teacher Suzanne Brenners added a butterfly garden and supplied all of its materials. The PTA also funded three small flower boxes. “Through their growth, knowledge and experience, the students have been able to keep the garden a sustainable one,” said Garcia. “Every grade looks forward to going out to the garden to assist in the maintenance of the plants and learn about new insects. They also enjoy harvesting and eating the food. The garden provides students with a ‘real-world’ experience. It’s so rewarding to hear back from parents and other teachers about how much the children love the garden. It’s even more rewarding when I hear from a parent that they’ve started their own garden at home.” Since the Project Primal began, West Broward students have set up gardens at 11 schools in the area. There is no cost to the hosting school. “We are always looking for motivated teachers that want to sponsor a garden, so we can continue to spread our passion for teaching agriculture, healthy eating habits, and science,” said Junco. PPCMS – West Campus Crowns Spelling Bee Champions By Debby Teich
T
he tension was high during the 2014 Spelling Bee, held at the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School - West Campus. Thirty students showcased their spelling skills with hopes of representing their school at the Broward County Scripps National Spelling Bee. They were asked to spell words that would make a college English professor proud. After 12 rounds, 8th grader Dylan Olster spelled the word “portraiture” correctly and was crowned champion. Seventh graders Maria Lakdawala and Julinna Villarta finished in second and third place respectively. “Preparation for the annual Spelling Bee helps stu-
dents increase their vocabulary, improve spelling skills and have the opportunity to develop public speaking skills,” said Michael Castellano, Assistant Principal. Dylan will compete again, but this time against more than 300 first place winners at the Broward County competition at Signature Grand in Davie. For information, visit www.pinescharter.net or call 954-450-6990.

Guest Readers Visit PPCES – FSU Campus By Debby Teich
I
n celebration of National Literacy Week , City of
Pembroke Pines FSU Charter Elementary School hosted “Reading Accelerates Success.” Community representatives and VIP’s showed the students how reading relates to science and space technology. All of the invited guests read fiction and non-fiction books featuring space themes. The students learned about constellations and their relationship to planets, space exploration and more. The guests shared their love of reading with the students and told them how books impacted their lives. They also revealed the names of some of their favorite childhood books. “Reading is the foundation for all other skills needed to succeed,” said Jill Berman, reading specialist for the PPCES East Campus. “All content areas rely on reading for understanding. The children look forward to this day, because it is a chance to engage with various types of literature in a relaxed atmosphere. The students actively learn without even realizing it. It is also a great way for members of our community to get involved with the students.” Guest author Lisa Service read her book, “Where Has Polly Gone?” to the entire student body. Some of other readers included parent volunteers, members of the City of Pembroke Pines Fire and Police Department, Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, and many more. “A good reader is a good leader and a good leader is a good reader,” said Mayor Ortis, who read “Otis” and “Going Around the Sun: Some Planetary Fun.” “I also like to have the kids read to me.”

ow many of us have suffered from annoying
and painful conditions like ingrown nails, thick nails, and bruised nails? We continue to put on our favorite shoes, our toes squirming inside them, and walk around in discomfort. We hope that the problem will go away on its own if we ignore it. Ignoring the problem, however, will not make it go away. Ingrown nails can be very painful. It occurs when a toe nail grows into the skin surrounding it. This can happen typically on either edge of the big toe. The cause of an ingrown nail may be due to improper trimming, inherited nail deformities, injuries, fungal infections or too much pressure on the nail. People commonly complain the most about ingrown nails when walking. Pain may be felt at the tip of the toe or all the way back to the base of the toe. You should not dismiss the pain as minor, because it could lead to infection, inflammation or even more serious conditions. Treatment for an ingrown nail should include an evaluation by a podiatric physician. If the nail is infected, he could prescribe an antibiotic. He may also trim the nail, remove part of the nail and/or treat the nail with a substance that will keep the ingrown part of the nail from growing back. To lesson pain, the podiatrist may give an anesthetic during the removal procedure. Bruised nails can be caused by an acute injury to the toe or a repetitive injury. Podiatrists often see these injuries in patients involved in sports like running or in patients who have had heavy objects fall on their toe. The big toe is most commonly the victim. A podiatrist may treat the bruised nail by removing it with the aid of an anesthetic, or drilling a hole in the nail to relieve pressure and promote drainage. You may also be prescribed pain medication. Soaking or icing the nail may also help. If your pain is tolerable, the nail can be left alone to fall off. A new nail commonly grows in to replace the old nail. There can be many causes of abnormally thick or crumbling nails: injury, pressure from shoes, fungal infections, diabetes, psoriasis or vascular disease. Sometimes the nail will loosen and fall off. The nail can also appear brittle, rigid, or yellow as well as thick. It is important to visit a podiatrist if you have this problem, because it may be a symptom of a serious underlying condition. If the thick nail is caused by a fungal infection, a culture may be done. If the nail is not infected, it may be thinned by trimming, filing or grinding. If there is a fungal infection, topical anti-fungals can be prescribed. For those who do not wish to take medication, ask your podiatrist if he can do a laser treatment on the fungal nail. In sum, these common toenail problems can be resolved successfully with the help of your podiatric physician. In addition, many toenail problems can be prevented by simply wearing the correct shoes and trimming your nails properly.

E
ach woman who considers breast enhance -
ment is a unique individual with personal appearance goals for surgery and her desired aesthetic appearance. This individuality demands a broad range of breast implant options, including varying shapes, types, projections and textures. Since the invention of silicone breast implants in 1962, there have been significant advances in implant manufacturing, preoperative planning and surgical techniques. As a result, 316,848 breast augmentations were performed last year making this procedure the second most popular plastic surgery sought by female patients according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Of the breast enlargement procedures performed, 70 percent of them used silicone implants rather than saline. The old adage “bigger is better” doesn’t universally apply to breast size. In order to achieve the ideal aesthetic result, it’s imperative that each patient is thoroughly evaluated pre-operatively with regard to desired outcome, including cup size, upper pole fullness, cleavage and shape. Proper assessment of base width, tissue stretch, and nipple to fold measurements must be taken into consideration. It’s the balance between desired outcome and individual anatomy that ensures the best results. Surgical planning should be based on the patient’s goals, the dimensions of their breast and body, and their tissue characteristics. In 2006, the FDA approved a new type of cohesive silicone gel implant. It is different from the previously manufactured Dow Corning implants in the composition of the gel, making it softer and less likely to leak, rupture or become encapsulated. Today there are three FDA approved silicone implant manufacturers: Mentor (memory gel). Allergan (Natrelle) and, most recently, Sientra. Each of these implants has a different diameter and projection, and each offers various profiles (low, moderate-plus, high), as well as shapes. With all of these variations, implant selection should be individualized, based on the patient’s desired outcome and body type. The technique used to create the space for the breast implant has improved over the past several years as well. Utilizing meticulous dissection under direction vision decreases trauma to surrounding breast tissue and muscle. Previously, the space or ‘pocket’ was dissected bluntly. This more careful operative technique results in less bleeding, less post-operative pain, a quicker recovery, and theoretically, a lower rate of capsular contracture with less blood and inflammation around the implant surface. Smaller incisions can be used for insertion of the implant as well with the development of the Keller Funnel. This device is a disposable, FDA approved, cone-shaped funnel with a special hydrophilic interior coating that allows the implant to be placed in the pocket using a ‘no-touch’ technique with less trauma to the breast and implant. Plastic surgery is a combination of art, science, and surgery. The techniques and materials that are utilized need to be continually evaluated and enhanced to ensure the optimal outcome for each patient. Current trends in aesthetic surgery are focused on the use of autologous fat to reverse the signs of aging. Similarly, fat grafting and lipo-augmentation procedures have been utilized for breast enhancement, both enlargement and reconstruction. The effects of transplanted fat on mammography and potential breast cancer detection are still being studied, as the technique for breast enlargement with fat is improved. For now, the cohesive, and soon-to-be available form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel implants are a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of a woman’s breast. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Brain Aneurysms: More Than Just a Headache An aneurysm — a ballooning or bulging out of an artery where the wall is weak — can wreak havoc if it bursts. When aneurysms rupture in the brain, the resulting hemorrhage can cause stroke, coma, brain damage or other serious problems. In fact, approximately forty percent of ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal and only twenty percent of patients survive with no permanent damage. There is no clear reason why a brain aneurysm forms, but there are many things that can contribute to its development. Things such as smoking, hypertension, family history, traumatic head injury and other disorders may increase a person’s risk of developing an aneurysm.
Ryan McTaggart, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Interventional Neuroradiologist
A ruptured aneurysm is a serious health risk that should be attended to immediately. Along with a severe headache, other symptoms can be; neck stiffness, drowsiness, nausea, mental confusion, dizziness, and vomiting. The most severe consequence of brain aneurysm rupture is the tear that allows blood into the space surrounding the brain, causing stroke called a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Ten to twenty percent of those who have a subarachnoid hemorrhage will die before getting to a hospital. Of those who survive, approximately thirty percent will have moderate to severe disabilities. Though not all brain aneurysms rupture, it is difficult to predict whether or when a rupture may occur.
Treatment options for brain aneurysms are determined by the size, shape, and location of the aneurysm in addition to the patient’s age and overall health. There are two main options for a patient with a brain aneurysm. First is open surgery performed through a surgical opening in the skull. Using an operating microscope and tiny instruments, the surgeon attaches a small metal clip at the base of the aneurysm. Because blood is prevented from flowing into the aneurysm, the chances of it rupturing are greatly reduced. Recovery time typically is four to six weeks. The second, and preferred option, is endovascular surgery (from within the blood vessel), performed through a catheter (a hollow, flexible tube) delivered from the groin to the blood vessels in the brain. Thin platinum wires are pushed into the aneurysm, where they conform to the wall of the aneurysm forming a coil mass. Since blood clots within the coil mass, the chances of a rupture are greatly reduced. Recovery time is only one to two days. The risk of suffering a brain aneurysm can be reduced through a series of lifestyle changes that include not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a balanced, low fat diet, getting help for alcohol and/or drug abuse, and controlling high blood pressure. Experienced specialists at Cleveland Clinic Florida offer the latest techniques and newest devices to give patients with aneurysms the best chance for a full recovery.

How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
S
ince J une 2013, when the Florida legislature approved addi -
tional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure cases are brought to trial. Previously it would take anywhere between 18 months to two years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, how can you combat against “light speed” foreclosures? The most important tool you can use to defend against our courts’ quests to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclosure defense attorney to guide you through the minefield of valid defenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t settle for anything less than an initial face-toface meeting with the attorney. Let’s face it, if they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “too busy” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the attorney has plenty of litigation and trial experience (at least 15 years), and that the attorney regularly practices in the county where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the attorney has a proven track record of outstanding results and satisfied clients. Ask the attorney to refer you to at least three satisfied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the attorney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the office. Another critical tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law firm you hire to defend your case has established loan modification and consumer bankruptcy departments. This will give you the very best opportunity to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure case are not accepted by the court, you can process a loan modification, reinstatement, or short payoff of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you can file a consumer bankruptcy and attempt to complete the modification within the bankruptcy proceeding. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years combined litigation and trial experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients, so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney (not a paralegal or assistant), or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

Let’s Clarify the BB&T Proposal As of late, there has been a lot of misinformation spread about the BB&T proposal. It’s time for a clarification! The Broward County Commission decided that it wanted an arena and a professional sports franchise 20 years ago. To pay the debt service on the BB&T Center, a two cent sales tax was levied on tourists who stay in our hotels. An agreement was reached to guarantee that at least $8 million per year from the tourist development tax would go towards paying down that debt of over $450 million. This tourist development tax has nothing to do with property taxes on Broward County residents. These funds are from visitors who come to Broward County and pay taxes on local hotel rooms. In addition, the arena operators were to pay $4.6 million annually of the debt service, as well as revenue share for any profits made over $12 million at a rate of 80 percent for the arena operators and 20 percent to Broward County. Broward County owns the BB&T Center; therefore, the remaining $250 million debt is ours, not private investors. The Broward County Commission hired the arena operators to manage the daily operations of the building, coordinate shows and the professional sports franchise, the Florida Panthers.
The arena operators have stated that they have been losing $35 million per year and expressed that level of financial loss could not be sustained by the team’s new operators. Because of this, they requested changes to some of the agreements and economic terms in order to “create a sustainable model for the BB&T Center that is comparable to other NHL venues, significantly reduce losses on a consolidated basis, and provide for a competitive hockey team and first class concerts and shows.”
using public money for a professional sports franchise. However; this argument usually takes place before an arena is built. In Broward County’s case, the County has already built the arena for a major league sport and is less than halfway through the economic life of that investment.
Their request asks the County Commission to allocate an additional portion of the tourist development tax towards their portion of the debt service. This would allow them to be more profitable, thereby having the ability to revenue-share with the county sooner. The team would also repay loans from the county immediately and contribute to the local convention and visitor’s bureau. The arena operators have also asked Broward County to bring the insurance for the arena under the county’s umbrella policy to save $1.7 million per year in insurance cost. We requested guidance so the commission agreed to have an outside consultant and auditor review the proposal to see what’s in our best interest to protect our asset; that will take 60 to 90 days. No decision has been made in terms of the proposal. The BB&T Center is the largest arena in Florida and the second largest in the southeast. The arena is a major economic driver for our county; creating jobs, tourism, sales tax, support for charitable causes and support for local businesses. I understand that arguments can be made for and against
Whether we have the Panthers and arena operators there or not, we will still have to pay for the building. Broward County must ensure the continued economic viability of the arena to ensure payment of outstanding bonds that were issued to finance the arena’s construction. In addition, the expectation is that without the sports team there it would devalue the building 73 percent to $60 million and the BB&T Center could be empty for six months out of the year. The negotiations are ongoing and I will ensure a decision is made that is in the best interest of Broward County. Barbara Sharief M.S.N., A.R.N.P. Broward County Mayor

What Will It Cost? By Evan Baron
T
he one question that I am always asked by a
prospective client is, “How much will this cost me?” It is obviously a very fair question, which deserves an answer. Unfortunately, often my answer is not well received by the individual. It is not because my answer suggests an extremely large fee, but rather the answer is open ended. I tell them I am unable to give them a complete cost, due to the fact that billing is based upon the amount of time it will take to conclude the case. The more time, the more work, the higher the fee. I explain that the fee is really controlled by the clients and not the attorneys. If they can reach a fair and equitable agreement the cost will obviously be less than a contested matter. The more a client litigates the more money they will spend. I do not “cap” my fees in a divorce action. I have been asked many times to quote a final, 100% complete price. I am unable to accommodate that request. It is unfortunate, but the cost of litigation cannot be determined at the initial meeting.
1655 North Commerce Pkwy., Ste. 201, Weston, FL 33326 email: Law@DivorceBroward.com
The cost of a divorce can increase based upon a number of factors. It often times is due to an unreasonable expectation by one or both of the clients. Unreasonable expectations often lead to litigation, because a settlement cannot be achieved. Unfair settlement offers can also lead to higher fees, since nobody should settle for an unreasonable and unfair resolution. In addition, some aspects of a divorce case are not even negotiable. As an example, child support is determined by Florida Child Support Guidelines and is statutory. Therefore, the amount of support is not negotiable between the parents. Higher fees can be generated by lack of cooperation or failure to act in a timely fashion. Financial discovery is an important aspect of a divorce case. There are certain requirements which must be fulfilled within a specific time frame. Many clients get totally stressed out when I hand them their “homework,” which requires gathering certain financial documents and completing a Financial Affidavit. I do understand why it becomes a stressful task. Just because you may be going through a divorce does not mean that all other aspects of your life are put on hold. The financial tasks are time consuming. Many individuals who are going through a divorce are not emotionally ready to deal with the completion of financial documents. Unfortunately, these tasks have to be completed in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will lead to motions being filed and hearings being set before a judge. The result is always additional fees, which should not be necessary; but for the client’s failure to complete the task in a timely manner. These are just some examples of situations which can cause fees to increase. As I stated previously, very often it is the client who controls the cost. Perhaps now you can understand why a set fee in a divorce is not a possibility.

porting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

CAUSES:
Loose or weak ligaments of the arch are the most common reason. Bone abnormalities that may be hereditary or acquired from injury (tarsal coalitions or fractures). Trauma to tendons and ligaments on the inside of the arch and ankle may cause the arch to slowly or acutely drop (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction).

Flat arch when standing is most common. The arch may look normal off weightbearing. Many arches appear normal when standing but the front part of the foot points out compared to the rearfoot. This is a foot that functions like a flat foot and may be a problem. When looking at the feet from behind the heel bone appears to turn out. Knock-knees. Feet and ankles look abnormal. Bulging of the bone on the inside of the ankle and foot. Abnormal gait with the feet excessively turned out. Abnormal shoe wear. People usually are overweight due to lack of exercise.

Teeth Whitening By Dr Robert Perlstein
I
f want to become fluent in the only interna-
tional universal language, then all you have to do is visit your dentist. Back before there was language, there was the smile. Everyone knows what the smile means. Everyone knows how important it is. And everyone knows that for our smile to remain attractive, we must brush our teeth to keep them clean. Today, people’s teeth are whiter than they were in the past. Back then, people just didn’t have the means to keep their teeth white like they do today. Let’s begin our discussion on tooth whitening by starting with toothpaste. In 2000 BC, ancient Egyptians actually used toothpaste made of pumice stone and vinegar, which they brushed on with a chew stick. As gross as that toothpaste sounds, it was nothing compared to the one the Romans used. Theirs was made from human urine! First century Roman physicians maintained that brushing teeth with urine, particularly Portuguese urine, whitened teeth. In the 1300s, the most requested dental service, other than extractions, was tooth whitening. After abrading the enamel with coarse metal files, barber-surgeons would apply

“aquafortis,” a nitric acid solution, to whiten the teeth. This common practice continued into the eighteenth century. Fortunately, today we have more advanced and conservative methods to whiten teeth, but the challenges we face are greater. Teeth have tiny pores and it’s these pores that get occupied by stain. The most common causes of stains on teeth are age, genetic, smoke and coffee, but also red wine, tea, soda, juice, and various foods and beverages. So, in effect, when we are not whitening, we’re staining. As we age, our teeth become smoother, darker and become more highly saturated with color. Restoring teeth to a lighter shade with less color saturation gives one a more youthful look. During tooth formation, the mineralization process can be interrupted by tetracycline antibiotics and by excessive fluoride ingestion casing yellow-brown to grey-brown stains and white spots on teeth, respectively. Trauma to teeth can cause the nerve in the tooth to die and thus the tooth takes a dark color. After root canal treatment and whitening, these teeth can be restored to brilliant luster. Depending on the needs of the patient, whitening can be accomplished either at home, over several applications with clear trays lined with carbide peroxide gel, or in the dental office in one hour with hydrogen peroxide gel in a process known as power whitening. Power whitening is an excellent service offered for those who have a big event to go to that night and want their teeth whitened that same day. Carbamide peroxide consists of approximately one-third of hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide penetrates the porosities in the tooth and breaks down the stain. In conclusion, today’s technology offers effective, conservative approaches to the removal of even the most severe unaesthetic discolorations, allowing people to attain the bright healthy smile they thought was beyond their reach. To determine if you are a candidate for whitening, call Dr. Robert Perlstein, DMD for your free consultation at 954-894-2121.
