Happy Mother’s Day!
Y
ou ’ ve probably heard the expression “April
showers bring May flowers.” Well, the timing couldn’t be better because flowers are a beautiful way to show Mom how much you love and appreciate her. Let’s all take a little pause and honor our mothers, and the mothers of our children, for all they do. They work hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us every single day. Let’s set aside one day and pamper them for a change! May also signifies that summer is just around the corner. Before we know it, school will be done, the afterschool activities will be over, and the pressures of everyday life will be eased just a little. This is the time to relax and enjoy our time together…because August will be here in a blink of an eye. Sincerely,

Sunrise Student Creates Swim Event To Spread The Word About Autism By Jill Sharpe
D
iego Avallaneda has seen how much
being on the swim team has helped his autistic teammate Jason Duran over the past five years. Now, he’s determined to let everyone know about the positive benefits swimming brings to kids with autism. To help spread the word and promote early detection, Avallenda, an eighth grader at All Saints Catholic School in Sunrise, put together an event called “Autism Swims”. The inaugural event, held on March 29th at the Sunrise Civic Center Aquatics Complex, was attended by 21 families. Many of the autistic kids who participated swam for the first time. Everyone received a medal and a commemorative t-shirt. Avellaneda, a member of the Sunrise Swim Team for the past six years, said he hopes other autistic kids get involved in a team sport like swimming because it helps them socially, mentally and physically. “When I first met Jason, I could hardly understand him and now he talks all the time and is one of the most popular kids on the team,” Avallaneda said.

“Jason is proof that autistic kids can do a lot more than people think.” To get help in promoting the event, Avallaneda presented the project at a city commission meeting. He talked about the growing number of autism cases which have increased by 78 percent in the last decade. Today, one of every 88 American children is diagnosed as autistic. The eighth grader was praised by Mayor Michael Ryan for his vision and efforts to make a difference in the lives of autistic kids. Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings also sent a letter to Avalleneda congratulating him for working so hard to be a voice for kids who often can’t speak for themselves. The praise from elected officials is nice but the biggest reward for Avalleneda is the smile on his friend Jason’s face. “Jason swam for Special Olympics one year but decided not to continue because he wanted to swim with the Sunrise team. “Our team is a family and Jason is a big part of it,” said Avalleneda. Jason’s father is overcome with emotion when he
talks about Avallaneda’s event. “We started Jason in swimming for the exercise and we never imagined he would become such an important member of the team. I never thought that Jason would inspire another kid to do something like this”, said Duran. “It’s just wonderful.”

Trip to D.C. is a Dream Come True for Sunrise Resident By Jill Sharpe
O
ctober 27, 2013 was a momentous day for World War II vet-
eran James Deming, as he finally got a chance to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. dedicated to honoring his service. The Sunrise resident was thrilled to be chosen by Honor Flight as one of 16 veterans to participate in the South Florida chapter’s inaugural mission. He had read about Honor Flight, a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s World War II and terminally ill veterans, in the newspaper and thought it was a great opportunity. Since 2005, Honor Flight has flown more than 100,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. from cities all over the country to see their memorial. Over 800 World War II veterans die every day. Honor Flight volunteer Rick Woolf said those veterans take their stories, history and enormous bravery with them. “In another five to seven years, almost all of our WWII veterans will be gone. Since many are still among us now is the time for action,” Woolf said. Deming was only 17 years old when he enlisted in the army and retired at age 62 as a Chief Warrant Officer. Honor flight not only gave him the opportunity to see the Memorial dedicated to his lifelong sacrifice of serving his country but it also gave him the chance to swap stories and memories will fellow veterans. “The whole experience was great,” Deming said. “We even had fun on the plane.” Deming’s memorable day started at 4:30 a.m. when he met his guardian Michael Miskew at Fort Lauderdale airport. Since most of the veterans are in their 80’s and 90’s, each one is assigned to a younger veteran to assist them on the trip. One of Deming’s favorite parts of the day was the send off at the airport as the flight departed amidst streams of water from the airport’s fire trucks. “The send off at the airport was tremendous,” Deming said. “Getting a salute from both the fire department and the police department made us feel so special.” The veterans also received letters from people all over the country. “It means so much to have people still remember that it’s important to say thank you, even after all these years,” Deming said. In addition to the visit to the WWII memorial, the itinerary for the day included a visit to Arlington Cemetery and the Korean War Memorial. While at the WWII Memorial, each veteran was given a small American flag. Deming handed his to a little boy and was thrilled by the little boys happiness over the gesture. “I had tears in my eyes,” said Deming. When the veterans returned home they were greeted at the airport by over 1,000 cheering people, signs, banners, bagpipers and more. It was surely a day that none of us will ever forget,” said Deming. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten Offers an Enriching Pre-School Experience for your Child By Julie Levin
T
he health and well-being of our chil-
dren is one of the most important things a parent strives for. Even at a young age, we want the very best educational setting we can find for them. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in Plantation Acres has been educating young minds for nearly three decades with an unique, academic environment. Recently Kathie Geller O’Dwyer, the Owner/ Director of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, answered some commonly asked questions about her school.
What type of curriculum does Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten use? DPK utilizes a cur-
riculum I created called “The Learning Ladder”. This curriculum covers all the different areas of learning in a hierarchy of skills. I was a pioneer in the Child Care industry in implementing a cognitive curriculum of this type.
Please tell us a little bit about the facility? The 10,000 square foot, free-
standing building is built on three acres of land with plenty of room for active preschoolers. There are ten spacious classrooms, a library, music room, gymnasium, Spanish language lab and computer room.
Please tell us about your background. I hold a Master’s Degree
What is Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? Developmental Pre-School and
Kindergarten was created to be an academic, enriching environment for children ages 20 months through 6 years of age. The goal of the school is to build a strong, energetic “learner” who utilizes all his/her senses to glean information and analyze it’s meaning. I sought to return to work as a speech and language pathologist outside the home when my children were two and three years of age. Unable to find a pre-school that would enhance my children’s interest to learn academics and have fun at the same time, I embarked upon the creation of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in order to fulfill this goal.
in Speech, Hearing and Language Pathology from Adelphi University. Since graduating in 1972 with my degree, I have taught children with speech and language delays and learning differences in the public schools of New York. I was the Director of Speech and Language Services at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and Blind and the District Diagnostician for St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. I moved to South Florida in 1982 and built my first nursery school in 1985.
How long have you been in South Florida?

Do you offer a summer camp program? In
addition to DPK’s academic year that coincides with the Broward County School calendar, DPK offers a wonderful, action packed Summer Camp called Camp Phoenix, that includes swimming daily in our large, heated swimming pool. Beginning in April, DPK offers swim instruction with a licensed Water Safety instructor that is open to the community.
What else would you like us to know about Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? I feel that I cannot do a bet-
ter job for my incoming students than I did for my children and grand children. I encourage all interested parents to check out our web site and come on over for a tour. The door is always open at Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten.

What sets Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten apart from other preschools? DPK is one of the only pre-schools
that has classrooms with narrow age parameters, small class size and additional staff to insure exceptional pupil teacher ratios. It is also a pre-school with the owner on the premises to preserve quality control in the learning environment. In addition, DPK boasts an exceptional private Kindergarten that does accept children who may miss the Broward County cut off of September 1st.

Broward County Gator Club Enjoys Family Fun at Markham Park By Jill Sharpe
T
he sight of alligators at a local park may be a cause for
concern, but these were not your usual gators. The Broward County Gator Club brought a dash of orange and blue to Markham Park on Sunday, April 6th for their Picnic in the Park. An affiliate of the University of Florida Alumni Association, the club held this picnic as a get-together where members could bring their whole family. “The Broward County Gator club is about connecting with people and our common love for the Gators,” said Jenna Van Pelt, the club’s President-Elect. “It’s like a second family.” A bounce house, balloon animals, and gorgeous weather all contributed to the picnic’s family atmosphere. Strawberry the Clown was there to provide face-painting for the children and adults alike. This was the second year in a row that the club held this picnic, although they also come out to Markham Park with their canine friends for Gator Dog Park Days. The organization places an emphasis on philanthropy and service, largely through giving scholarships to Broward County students who will be attending the University of Florida. The Broward County Gator Club typically offers at least fifteen $1,500 scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors. Demand for these scholarships can be quite high, as the club received over one hundred applications this year alone. “We can all do so much together,” said Christina Paradowski, Vice President of Outreach. “We give out scholarships, and when we’re calling the students who were chosen, they are so excited to learn that they got the money.” The Picnic in the Park is just one of many events that the club organizes each year. Members will meet up for happy hours, trips together to Gainesville for football games in the Swamp, and poker tournaments. A highlight of the group’s calendar is the Gator Gathering, where fans will meet at War Memorial Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, May 1st for a barbecue dinner and silent auction event headlined by Head Football Coach Will Muschamp. While the Broward County Gator Club stays busy with their community service and social activities, they are always looking for new members to join them. While all local University of Florida alumni are welcome to join, anyone who is simply a fan can still become a member of the club. “With more volunteers, there are so many more events we can do,” said Van Pelt. Dwayne Shaw, a new member of the club who “bleeds orange and blue”, encourages people to get involved. “It’s about being connected, doing good in the community, and giving back to the university,” said Shaw. For more information on the Broward County Gator Club, please visit their website at www.browardcountygatorclub.com.

Firewall Students at Bair Middle To Participate in 2014 Serve-A-Thon By Jill Sharpe
T
his month , Firewall Center students at
Bair Middle School in Sunrise, along with their parents, mentors, school representatives, and community leaders will serve in various community projects to teach students the value of giving back and making a difference in their own neighborhoods. Firewall, a non-profit organization that provides free after school mentoring, tutoring and leadership development to 250 at-risk students every day, is proud to introduce what they are calling the 2014 Serve-A-Thon not only because it is a tool to provide much needed funding but also because it is a hands-on opportunity for the students to positively impact their community much like the Firewall program has positively impacted them. Some of the service projects planned include landscaping run-down public spaces, planting trees, restoring the students own schools by painting and mulching,

helping out at local fire stations, serving food to the homeless and planting gardens at local community centers. Students were asked to find individual supporters to help cover the costs of materials, snacks, water and a Serve-a-thon T-shirt. Firewall Centers Executive Director Andy Fernandez said the Serve-A-Thon will surely be a day of sweat and hard work but also a day of unity, compassion and a whole lot of fun. “ “Serving is a gift that we have the privilege of sharing with families, friends, neighbors and those in need,” Fernandez said. Firewall is looking for sponsorships from local companies with similar missions to serve our community. Sponsorships support Firewall financially by ensuring that students continue to have a place to be mentored and developed into servant leaders. For more information, log on to www.firewallcenters.org

Theatre Returns To Piper High School By Jill Sharpe
F
or a long time , there has
been no drama club or theatre productions at Piper High School. This year, Megan D’Ovelliers, an English and new Drama teacher, decided it was high time to bring it back. D’Ovelliers, who has been teaching at the school for just two years, recently directed the first show that has graced Piper’s stage in many years. On Thursday, March 13th and Friday, March 14th, hundreds of parents, friends and members of the community enjoyed a production of 30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play. D’Ovelliers, a cast of 26 students and several more, who helped with stage managing and technical production aspects, were rightly proud of themselves when the curtain rose on the 13th. The show, signaled a rebirth of the forgotten theatre program at the public high school in Sunrise. D’Ovelliers said she chose this particular play for several reasons. “Most importantly, 30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play, is an ensemble piece, which means there are really no clear cut lead parts. Everyone in the cast gets an opportunity to shine,” D’Ovellier said. “I also chose this play because it was inexpensive to produce, as it needed a minimal amount of staging and costuming.” One of the student’s parents donated lumber for the set and most of the costuming was pulled from the cast members own closets. “The rights to this show were also inexpensive compared to the popular musicals that many schools choose,” D’Ovellier said. “Now that we’ve had a successful first production, we can think a little bigger for next year and might even get to do a musical.” 30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play, written by Alan Hachnell, is a series of short vignettes depicting exactly what the title says - 30 reasons not be in a play. D’Ovelliers liked it because the play can actually be cast with anywhere from 15-40 students as it is perfectly ok to double cast some characters. Twenty-six students auditioned for parts and twenty-six students were chosen to participate. “As a first foray back into the theatre program for our high school, it was important for me to include everyone who wanted to be involved,” said D’Ovelliers. “I think it worked out great.” Everyone in the cast did a fantastic job but several students received thunderous applause. Freshman Melissa Kaen, who played the character of Cecily, Sophomore Tamaurice Pierce, who D’Ovelliers called a true character actor, and Senior Mitchell Vargas, who played the character of a director on stage, was literally a leader amongst the cast in real life. too. “Vargas stands out, not only because he is talented but also because he spent lots of time helping his fellow performers with their parts. It’s just a shame he is a senior and therefore won’t be with us next year,” said D’Ovelliers. Sophomore Erika Schell, who was the stage manager for the show, also received special praise. “Schell, who has the maturity of a 25 year old, was completely dedicated to the show, working very long hours, sometimes staying at school until 10 p.m. to make sure everything was just right during the four and a half weeks of rehearsal.” said D’Ovelliers. “I couldn’t have done it without her.” In the script, the characters talk about many things that can go wrong during the production of a play. The horrors and hardships that befall those who feel the call of the stage can range from stage kisses to pinkeye to inciting World War III. In a series of hilarious examples, the play portrays stage acting as something dangerous that must be avoided at all costs. Ironically, the real life scenario of staging this play, and bringing theater back to Piper High School, proved just the opposite.

Legally Speaking
Some Commonly Asked Questions By Evan Baron
D
uring my initial consultation with a prospec-
tive client, I try and educate them as to the basic laws in Florida dealing with a Dissolution of Marriage. After explaining some of the basics, I always inquire as to whether they have any questions. It seems that there are a number of questions which are common to most cases. I thought I would share them with you.
How long does a divorce take?
I explain that every divorce is different, so it is impossible to predict how long any individual case will take. There are also a number of factors which are out of my control. For instance, the particular Judge who is assigned the case may have a great influence on how long the proceedings will last. Each Judge controls his/her own docket and, as such, some divisions are more “backed up” than others. In some divisions it may take a couple of weeks to schedule a hearing, while in other divisions it may take a couple of months. I have handled simple uncontested dissolutions in about six weeks, while more complex cases can last a year or more. Obviously the greater the amount of issues involved, the longer it will take. Cases that settle by way of a Marital Settlement Agreement will normally conclude more quickly than a contested matter, which must be presented to a Judge. If the participants reach an Agreement, then a Final Hearing can be scheduled within two weeks.

How much will this cost me?
As previously stated, each case is different. Since most Family Law attorneys charge on an hourly basis, the time spent will obviously affect the “bottom line.” In most cases, it is impossible to predict how long a case will last and therefore impossible to advise as to the eventual cost. One must remember that in litigation the time spent is also somewhat controlled by your opposition. When an attorney files his/her “Notice of Appearance,” it requires his/her involvement in all aspects of the case. The more the parties chose to litigate, the more costly their case will be. It is really up to the client as to how much the “bottom line” will be.
I don’t want anything from my spouse. Can I agree to that?

The answer is yes and no. A person can waive all of his/her rights if he/she wishes to do so. The only aspect of the case which cannot be waived is child support for any minor children. Florida law will not allow a Final Judgment to be signed without a provision for child support. The rationale is that the support belongs to the children and therefore cannot be waived by the parents. I have found that many individuals are initially prepared to “just walk away” from a long term marriage without obtaining his/her share of property accumulated. It is obviously his/her right to do so, but nobody should ever make a decision based upon emotion. The reason a person should retain an attorney is to insure that decisions that are made are rational and based upon the law. No individual should give up rights that the law has provided.

Understanding Home Equity Loans By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
A
What are the benefits?
s you look outside enjoying your morning
coffee, are you envisioning a new pool… maybe a hot tub? Well, good news, your home may be able to provide it to you!! Broward County home values went up 16.0% last year and Zillow predicts they will rise an additional 6.0% within the next year. What does that mean to homeowners? Should you sell or fix-up your current home? Many homeowners have elected to use their home equity to upgrade their current home. If you are in the market for a new kitchen, pool or even a debt consolidation loan, ask your local credit union about their affordable home equity loans. What is a Home Equity Loan? A home equity loan is a second mortgage that is secured by the equity in your home. The lender determines the equity based on the market value of your home minus what you owe.
▸▸ Home equity loans typically have
lower interest rates than credit cards
▸▸ Fixed monthly payments with a home equity loan
▸▸ Interest cost on home equity loans may be tax deductible
▸▸ Borrowers may qualify for large loan amounts (based on built-up equity)
▸▸ Funds can be used for any purpose (college tuition, debt consolidation, home remodeling, etc)
Any downside?
There are two types of home equity loans – which one is best for you?
▸▸ Rate is usually higher than the first mortgage ▸▸ Adjustable monthly payments with a HELOC ▸▸ Risk of losing your home if loan is defaulted on ▸▸ Downturn of the housing market could put you owing more than the value
▸▸ Fixed Rate Home Equity Loan. This loan provides a single-lump-sum
payment to the borrower, which is repaid over a set period of time at an agreed-upon interest rate. It’s important to know that the payment and interest rate remain the same over the life of the loan. A fixed rate equity loan protects the borrower from interest rate increases and payment fluctuations throughout the life of the loan.
▸▸ Home Equity Line of Credit. This loan is a line of credit also known as
a HELOC. The interest rate is variable and works like a credit card. The borrower is pre-approved for a certain spending limit and can withdraw money when they need it by simply writing a check. This line of credit is repaid based on the amount used and the current interest rate. The rate is based on an index, such as the Prime Rate, plus a margin and will vary with the index.
Equity loans are not for everyone...but they could be perfect for you! Compare the different types of home equity loans and lenders; borrow only what you need and make sure the monthly payment is easily within your budget. Also, ask your neighborhood credit unions about current promotions such as “No Closing Costs”. Brushing Can Improve Your Child’s GPA By Dr. Michael Maruri
I
f you want to improve your child’ s GPA, brush
for two minutes, twice each day! Did you know that tooth brushing can impact your child’s grades, school attendance and affect your work as well? In the U.S., oral disease causes children to miss over 50 million school hours and their parents to lose 24 million work hours each year. Dental decay is the most common chronic disease in children—five times more common than asthma. Yet with good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing, cavities are largely preventable. Recent research shows that children with poor oral health are more likely to have below average grades than kids who have good oral hygiene. According to a recent study in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found students who experience tooth pain are “four times more likely to have a low grade point average – below the median GPA of 2.8” than their classmates. February is Children’s Dental Health Month. There are some simple things you can do to keep your children’s teeth from interfering with their education: ▸▸ Brush your child’s teeth yourself until age 6 and supervise brushing until age 8. Children may not have the dexterity to do it on their own effectively. ▸▸ Make sure your child brushes twice a day for at least two minutes--top, bottom and sides--not just the front teeth. ▸▸ Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Remember to replace your child’s toothbrush every 3-4 months. ▸▸ Be sure to clean between their teeth once a day with floss to remove plaque and food where a toothbrush can’t reach. ▸▸ Visit the dentist twice a year beginning at age one. ▸▸ The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children receive an exam by an orthodontic specialist by age 7. This evaluation will help to diagnose any problems with their bite. The goal is for every child to have a healthy and beautiful smile for a lifetime.
What Role Does Orthodontics Play in Oral Health?
Straight teeth make for a beautiful smile and they are also easier to keep clean. Crowded and improperly positioned teeth are more difficult to brush and floss. This can lead to a higher risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Orthodontics is often necessary to help improve the stability, function, and health of an individual’s teeth. Children, who receive compliments on their beautiful teeth, smile more. More smiles translate into a friendlier demeanor and higher self-esteem. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, “It has been clinically proven that a beautiful smile leads to higher self-esteem. Confidence generates success.” I am a firm believer that children are our highest priority. All children need and deserve a good smile. An uncorrected problem can adversely affect an individual’s speech, general health and self-esteem. A person’s self-confidence almost always increases when his or her smile and appearance are improved. The value of a beautiful smile cannot be underestimated.
Dr. Michael Maruri and his staff at Clear Orthodontic Solutions understand your child’s smile is just as important as their performance in school, which is why they offer convenient early-morning, after-school, and Saturday appointment times. Dr. Maruri offers a variety of treatment options to meet the unique needs of his patients, including traditional metal, clear ceramic braces, lingual braces, Invisalign, and Invisalign Teen. T
he anterior crucial ligament (ACL) is a vital
knee joint stabilizer. It helps control anterior stability in the functional knee joint. Our modern day athletes are tearing up their ACL’s at alarming rates. The most common mechanism of tearing has to do with a high energy athletic event where the knee is subjected to high torque forces that are required for our bodies to change directions or come to a stop. Also, many people are tearing their ACL’s while skiing. The most common story by patients is that something suddenly happened on the knee and they heard or felt a “pop” with immediate swelling and guarding. The physical examination demonstrates that the knee is “loose,” comes out of its normal socket, and there is swelling and guarding. The immediate treatment of this knee will consist of ice, protection and getting diagnostic studies such as X-rays and MRI scan. The X-ray is usually normal. The MRI usually confirms the tear of the ACL and excludes further damage of other structures in the knee joint like articulate cartilage, meniscus cartilage, bone contusions, bone fractures and tears in any other ligament. Most of these patients are young and athletic and most of them will require surgical intervention to fix the problem. Again, the problem is an unstable knee joint because of a tear of the ACL. You can fix the knee joint by using your own tissue (from patella tendon area or from hamstrings). In older athletes or patients who want to minimize the size of the scars and time in the operating room, you can use transplant tissue to replace the torn ACL. The surgery is outpatient and arthroscopic in nature with small wounds and takes approximately one or two hours to do.

The rehabilitation of the surgery consists of physical therapy with the objective to return the athlete to unrestricted sports activities in approximately six months. The success rate and achievement of this goal is very high and most patients are very happy that they had the surgery. Not everybody is a candidate for surgery and in this type of older sedentary patient a strenuous physical therapy protocol is established and with the protection of a brace most of them can return to sports. MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Playing the Game of Chess Makes Kids in Sunrise Smarter BY MICHAEL RYAN, MAYOR OF SUNRISE
T
his month marks the third anniversary of the
City’s scholastic Champions of Chess student tournament. In just three short years we have become a “Chess City” – incorporating chess into the curriculum of three Sunrise elementary schools, fostering chess clubs at each of the City’s 11 public schools, and hosting open-play chess sessions every Saturday at the Sunrise Civic Center. Why is chess so important? There are a number of compelling reasons. At the top of the list are the academic benefits of the game. “Chess makes kids smarter,” says Chess master Jerry Meyers – and it does so, he maintains, because it teaches critical skills: ▸▸ Focusing. Chess teaches children the benefits of observing carefully and concentrating. ▸▸ Visualizing. Chess prompts children to imagine a sequence of actions before it takes place. ▸▸ Thinking ahead. Chess teaches children to think first and then act. ▸▸ Weighing options. Chess shows children how to identify alternatives and consider the pros and cons of each. ▸▸ Thinking abstractly. Chess teaches children to step back periodically and consider the bigger picture. Many researchers agree, and have reported a strong correlation between learning to play chess and academic achievement. A landmark 2000 study published in the journal “Research in the Schools,” showed that students who received chess instruction scored significantly higher on all measures of academic achievement, including math, spatial analysis, and non-verbal reasoning ability. Even if you don’t play the game, I encourage you to come out to watch our scholastic “Champions of Chess” tournament on Saturday, May 17. I think you will be impressed by our elementary, middle and high schools students. After watching, you may want to either refresh your skills or learn for the first time.

The World’s Favorite Newspaper™ Severe Weather Plans Can Keep You and Your Family Safe BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF
T
he City of S unrise is Storm R eady. Are you ?
As a StormReady community, the City of Sunrise was certified by the National Weather Service as meeting the preparedness criteria by having a formal hazardous weather plan in place. Living in South Florida, our tropical climate can lead to severe weather year-round, from traditional summer thunderstorms to hurricanes. Some storms can be predicted, but others such as tornadoes and floods may occur with little or no
warning. In a disaster, city officials and relief workers may not be able to reach everyone immediately. You need to be prepared ahead of time because you won’t have time to shop or search for the supplies you will need when a disaster strikes. With hurricane season just around the corner, beginning on June 1, there is no better time than now to put your own emergency plan in place. Your emergency preparedness plan should include precautions for protecting your home in the event of a hurricane as well as protecting yourself and loved ones.
Sarah Shapiro brought a copy of the Sunrise Town Times with her on a recent trip to New York City. Here she is in Times Square.
We Want Your Photo! It is recommended to have non-perishable food and water on hand to last at least 3 to 5 days after a storm for each person (and pet) in your household. Here are some other basic safety preparedness tips: ▸▸ Discuss what to do in an evacuation. When told by officials, go immediately to a shelter as instructed or to the home of a family friend or relative who lives out of the area. Find out about your local shelters beforehand. ▸▸ Know evacuation routes. Pre-establish several different routes in case certain roads are blocked or closed. ▸▸ Family members can become separated during an emergency. Be prepared by creating a plan for how to reach one another. Establish an out-of-area contact (such as a relative or family friend) who can coordinate family members’ locations and information should you become separated. Make sure children learn the phone numbers and addresses, and know the emergency plans. ▸▸ Quiz children every six months so they remember what to do, where to go, and whom to call in an emergency. ▸▸ Decide how to take care of pets. Pets are not allowed in places where food is served - so you will need to have a place to take your pets if you have go to a shelter. ▸▸ Post emergency phone numbers (fire, police, ambulance, etc.) by the phone. ▸▸ Assemble a family disaster supplies kit, and keep a smaller one in the trunk of your vehicle. For more information, please visit the Hurricane Preparedness page on the City of Sunrise website, www. sunrisefl.gov. For on-going safety information, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.
