Happy Valentine’s Day!

I

t ’ s hard to believe it ’ s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were ushering in 2015. If you’re like most of us, the New Year’s resolution is already broken. The kids are back into their school and sports routines and we are back to work, but daydreaming of summer vacation. It’s also the time to make plans for a romantic evening with your special someone this Valentine’s Day. While we contemplate which gift to purchase, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that the gift comes from the heart and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love.

JAFCO Raises $520,000 at Annual Heroes Gala BY JILL SHARPE

S

unrise based JAFCO recently hosted

its 16th Annual Heroes Gala with nearly 400 people in attendance at the Polo Club of Boca Raton. The evening was dedicated to raising funds for abused, neglected, abandoned, at-risk and developmentally disabled children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The black-tie affair was chaired by long-time JAFCO supporters Carol and Stephen Winig along with Nanci and Stephen Beyer and featured a carnevale-themed cocktail reception, fine dining, silent and live auctions, eight-piece band, dancing and a heartwarming presentation about JAFCO’s life-saving work. During the gala, JAFCO presented the prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy to Martha and Melvin Aronson, Tami and Perry Isenberg, and Nancy and Alfred Katzin. The Lifetime Achievement Award was

presented to Claire and Gerald Manowitz. The generosity and commitment of the honorees has enabled JAFCO to continue to provide care and services to children in the South Florida community. JAFCO has touched the lives of more than 4,000 children since the organization’s inception in 1992. Events like the gala help the organization serve its mission to provide safety, love and security to abused children through its many programs including: family preservation, foster care, adoption, mentoring, group homes, emergency care and crisis centers. “It’s hard to believe 15 years have passed since our first gala,” said Sarah Franco, executive director of JAFCO. “This event has grown exponentially and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who has been there to help along the way.” JAFCO’s annual gala would not be possible

Walk-a-thon at Markham Park Raises Funds to Support Community Centers in Israel BY JILL SHARPE

T

he B roward chapter of the Women ’ s

International Zionist Organization (WIZO Simcha) hosted their 2nd annual Walk-a-thon on Sunday, December 14th at Markham Park to raise funds for three community centers that the organization supports in Israel. One-hundred forty members and friends of the WIZO Simcha participated and raised ___. The walk, billed as a family event, was attended by young and old and everyone had a great time. There was plenty of food and free entertainment. Laura Waldman, who participated, congratulated WIZO Simcha on its success. “The event was amazing, inspirational and meaningful,” said Waldman. WIZO is an international movement of Zionist women founded in 1920. Today, there are over a quarter of a million active WIZO members in 50 federations around the world working for the welfare of Israeli citizens and lending a hand in the operating of hundreds of education and welfare projects

and services. More than 100 women from their mid 30’s to 50’s are members of the WIZO Simcha chapter in Broward. The chapter works to support the Nir Haemek Youth Village, the Pilavin Gates Day Care Center and The Miami Beach Community Center. More than 1200 students take advantage of the Nir Haemek Youth Village. Located adjacent to the city of Afula in the Jezrael Valley in Israel’s North, WIZO’s Nir Haemek High School and Youth Village provide residential facilities for children who are often survivors of years of neglect and abuse as a result of an unstable home environment. The Village has become a model of mainstreaming high high-risk teens from dysfunctional homes and teens who have immigrated to Israel without their parents with day students from the surrounding neighborhood. The Village provides computer and science labs, a police academy program and teaches skills to prepare youth for a productive future in fields

such as agriculture, cheese manufacturing and many others. The Pilavin Gates Day Care Center is located in the low income city of Rishon Letzion. It provides an invaluable service for babies and children of working mothers. The programs are designed to stimulate the children’s emotional and physical development, with the help of sensory motor play areas. Art and music, educational games, outdoor activities and well-balanced hot meals make this center a home away from home. The Miami Beach Community Center serves a hub of social, educational and cultural afterschool activities for children. The program includes homework assistance, sports, computer training, sciences and outdoor activities. The Center also provides learning activities for adults. For more information about WIZO Simcha, call (305)610-3004 or e-mail laugal125@gmail.com.

WalkAbout Event Will Raise Awareness and Funds for Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injuries BY JILL SHARPE

O

n March 7, 2015, the B rain I njury Association of Florida, Inc. (BIAF) will partner with Healthsouth Sunrise Rehabilitation Hospital to host a walk to raise awareness about traumatic brain injury (TBI). The event, called Walkabout, will take place at Welleby Park in Sunrise and everyone is invited to participate in honor of someone they know, love, or have lost to brain injury. Registration and check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 1.2 mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The walk is free. BIAF’s inaugural WalkAbout was held last year in Tallahassee. One-hundred people participated and raised over $6,000 for the organization. This year, the organization will host the walk in Sunrise in addition to a walk in Tallahassee. By partnering with HealthSouth Sunrise Rehabilitation Hospital and the Sunrise community, BIAF and HealthSouth hope to heighten awareness about TBI, and in a fun filled way, educate families about safety and available resources while supporting an important cause. Each year over 136,000 Floridians suffer from a TBI. Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties have the highest incidences said BIAF President and CEO Valarie Breen. “Although awareness of TBI is on the rise, people are still not aware of how to prevent brain injury or where

to turn if someone they love has a TBI,” Breen said. Floridian Alex Harkinson suffered a TBI when he fell out of a moving truck on 1-95 wiping out his memory. Harkinson said he had to learn all over again how to walk, talk and use his hands. “Everyone said I was lucky to be alive but in the beginning it was extremely frustrating, sitting at home and you can’t drive or even afford to buy food.” A resource coordinator with BIAF put Harkinson in touch with the Department of Education’s Vocational Rehabilitation division which placed him in the “independence works” program, a non-profit servicing people with disabilities looking for work. Now, Harkinson works for Office Depot and his manager Eddie Anderson said he doesn’t see Harkinson’s disability.”I see an open and friendly guy who goes above and beyond to help customers try and find what they need,” Anderson said. All funds raised by the walks allow Brain Injury Association of Florida to continue these kinds of programs and services that are so important to the support of brain injury survivors. For more information call Brain Injury Association of Florida at (877)342-4483 or HealthSouth Sunrise at (954)802-7567.

their parents were treated to a Magnet Showcase at Village Elementary School. The showcase, put together by Amrita Sookhansingh, STAMP Coordinator and Community Liaison, along with Principal Deborah Peeples and Assistant Principal Tina Wells, was informative and got the students

One of the most popular speakers was Mary Meillier, the Magnet Coordinator at Parkway Middle School of the Arts. Students were intrigued by the fact that they could be on hand for surgeries at The Rand Eye Institute and sit in on trials at the Central Broward Courthouse. Wyman Gresham, from Lauderhill 6-12, promoted the STEM/MED programs, the ‘video arcade learning,’ and the fact that that sixth graders who remain in their program through twelve grade could actually earn a two-year college degree upon graduation.

Sookhansingh said she was pleased with the turnout and the response to the program. “Our goal was to bring all the information to the students and their families so they wouldn’t have to go visit every magnet middle school,” she said. “For the rest of the day, teachers heard the students talk excitedly as they contemplated all their options.”

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Sunrise Offers Opportunities to Spend Quality Time With Loved Ones BY MICHAEL RYAN, MAYOR OF SUNRISE

M

ost people view the heart as a symbol of

love. This is especially true in the month of February, when we’re surrounded by heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and other Valentine’s Day treats. But it’s also important to remember that February is American Heart Month – a time to focus on being heart healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. The good news is that many deaths related to cardiovascular diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure – can be prevented through healthier habits and better management of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. To boost your health and longevity, take these tips from the CDC to heart: ▸▸ Work with your health care team. Get a checkup at least once each year, even if you feel healthy. A doctor, nurse, or other health care professional can check for conditions that put you at risk for cardiovascular disease. ▸▸ Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis. ▸▸ Get your cholesterol checked. Your health care team should test your cholesterol levels at least once every five years, using a simple blood test. ▸▸ Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthful meal and snack options can help you avoid cardiovascular disease and its complications. ▸▸ Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. ▸▸ Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. ▸▸ Don’t smoke. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for cardiovascular disease. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quit as soon as possible. ▸▸ Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can increase your blood pressure. ▸▸ Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely, and talk with your health care team about treatment options. ▸▸ Take your medicine. If you’re taking medication to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or another condition, follow the instructions carefully. This month, the City of Sunrise is bringing you a series of “Valentines” in the form of free, family-friendly events. What better way to show we care than by helping you spend quality time with your loved ones? Join us at the Sunrise Civic Center campus for an Outdoor Movie – “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” – on Friday, February 6, followed by the second concert in our Tunes ‘N Trucks series on Friday, February 20. The Sunrise Suns, the City’s professional wheelchair basketball team, will host a tournament from February 6 through 8 in the Sunrise Civic Center Gymnasium. And we’ll celebrate dogs and dog lovers during Woofstock on Saturday, February 7, at Sawgrass Sanctuary. For more information about our great city, including the events and programs I’ve mentioned here, be sure to visit us online at www.sunrisefl.gov and www. facebook.com/sunrisefl. Students at Westpine Middle School Learn a Lesson About Teamwork Through KAPOW Program BY JILL SHARPE

A

classroom of sixth grade students at Westpine M iddle

School, learned a valuable lesson about how the things they learn in school are applicable to the real work when Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) volunteer Ann-Marie Clarke recently visited their classroom to lead a simple activity involving passing around oranges. The activity concluded with squeezing the oranges and drinking the juice. Clarke, an attorney from Webley and Clarke P.A., divided the class into teams and the teams competed by passing oranges to each other in different ways. Each team had to work out how each member would pass the orange to a teammate. The teams were then timed to see which team could accomplish the task the quickest. The goal of the lesson was to increase students’ awareness of the importance of teamwork and to help students recognize and appreciate each individual’s contribution to a team effort. At the end of the discussion, students were asked whether their teams achieved their goals and they talked about each team member’s impact. They also discussed the difference between working on a project alone versus working on a team and answered questions about how each team member depended on another. Students were able to identify interdependent relationships and relate that to similar relationships in their schools, homes, communities, and in the workplace.

18

February 2015 | Our city sunrise

They were also able to recognize the importance of each individual’s role within these relationships. The lessons learned were just an example of the many benefits students receive from the KAPOW program, which prepares students for success in work and in life, through school and business partnerships that connect students, teachers, and schools with volunteers, their businesses, organizations and the community. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, the organization that manages the network of more than 1,000 business and community volunteers, teachers and school administrators from South Florida who collectively implement the KAPOW program, said it is a privilege to work with the students, teachers and administrators at Westpine Middle School. “We share a common goal of connecting success in school with success in work and life,” Casbarro said. “Through our lessons, our volunteers can reinforce the teachers’ instructions and bring a real world perspective to the classroom.” As a KAPOW volunteer, Clarke emphasized the importance of serving as an example and behavior model for the kids. “To think that what I’m doing will create a lasting impact is very fulfilling for me,” she said. “I live by the principle that its essential to give back and that’s what I am doing.”

ver the past year or so, it has come to my

attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage from their spouse are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney and filing for the dissolution, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive and it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and as such may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties. It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and as such it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. My office is available and offers free consultations. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Touchline Protects Seniors By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

A

s sheriff, I want to ensure the B roward Sheriff’s Office is doing everything we can for our county’s seniors, while honoring and respecting their independence. The Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline is saving lives by providing a free daily wellness telephone call to seniors age 60 and over who live alone in Broward County. In September 2013, BSO partnered with the Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline program. Our staff went into many senior communities throughout Broward County and educated residents about this great service. As a result, this program expanded rapidly and more than doubled its number of participants. Rafael Vazquez, the senior touchline coordinator, estimates that nearly 80 percent of these new members are the result of BSO’s community outreach involvement.

Irene’s story highlights the importance of 2-1-1. In March 2013, she was standing on a stool in her kitchen, stretching for a treat for Abby, her service dog, when she lost her balance and fell. Irene, who lives alone, was hurt and couldn’t move. When she missed her 9am call from Broward 2-1-1, a BSO deputy was dispatched to check on her. Without 2-1-1, Irene may not have received the help she needed when she needed it. Here’s how it works. Up to three calls are placed to the senior’s home within an hour. If there is no response, and if the listed emergency contacts also cannot reach the person, Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline alerts BSO and a deputy is sent to the residence immediately. The daily wellness call provides a safeguard for Broward seniors as well as social interaction. The 2-1-1 counselor establishes a caring, reliable relationship with the senior. The counselor can also connect seniors with other agencies and organizations that can provide additional assistance. Whether the individual requires food, transportation, medication or additional medical services, the counselors can help. Irene will sometimes call in just to talk to one of the counselors. To seniors like her, the program provides a support system. It helps Broward seniors stay in their homes and remain independent. The value of our senior population is clear to see, but is sometimes overlooked. They are a link to our past and, through their wisdom, provide a strong template for our future. The Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline is a great example of the type of services the seniors of our county have earned and deserve. I urge any interested senior in our community to sign up for this important service. For more information or to register for Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline, dial 2-1-1 or visit the Broward 2-1-1 website at http://211-broward.org/senior-touchline/.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF

ASK THE EXPERT

February Is American Heart Month

Protecting Yourself Against Identity Theft

BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF

W

ith heart disease being the number one

killer of men and women in the United States, we all need to incorporate heart-healthy habits into our daily routines. Show your heart some Valentine love, learn about your risks for heart disease and stroke and stay “heart healthy” for yourself and your loved ones. Know your risks. Certain risk factors can lead to heart disease:

BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA

I

dentity Theft happens when you least expect it!

But what is it? How can I prevent it from happening to me? Let’s power-up our day with a strong cup of coffee and review some key information about Identity Theft…

What is Identity theft?

▸▸ Obesity

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. In many cases, the victim is unaware of the activity until months after the incident. Based on industry research, every 1.9 seconds someone becomes a victim of identity theft. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States and it costs consumers and businesses billions of dollars every year.

▸▸ High blood pressure

Identity Theft can happen in various ways:

▸▸ Family history of heart disease ▸▸ Lack of physical activity ▸▸ Smoking

▸▸ Poor diet

▸▸ Stealing your purse/wallet

▸▸ High cholesterol

▸▸ Stealing financial statements from the mail

▸▸ Diabetes

▸▸ Diverting mail from its intended recipients by submitting a change of address form. ▸▸ Rummaging through trash for personal data. ▸▸ Obtaining information transmitted electronically. ▸▸ Skimming or electronic device theft of card numbers.

What can you do to prevent identity thieves from accessing your information?

Here are a few practices that will minimize unauthorized access to your personal information: ▸▸ Contact your financial institution if you do not receive a monthly statement/bill. ▸▸ Review account statements carefully to ensure all transactions were authorized by you.

Take steps to become more heart-healthy, Plan for prevention and stay that way: ▸▸ Follow a heart- healthy diet. Avoid fatty, overly-processed foods, as well as foods high in sodium and sugar. Aim for several servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. If you drink alcohol, be sure to do so only in moderation: up to two drinks a day for men and only one for women. Find great tips at www.choosemyplate.gov . ▸▸ Increase physical activity. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity five days or more each week. This can be broken into shorter periods throughout the day. Incorporate exercise into your routine in simple ways such as taking a brisk walk or using the stairs instead of the elevator. Check out the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans at www.health.gov . ▸▸ If you smoke, quit. Find resources to help you at www.smokefree.gov . ▸▸ Work with your doctor to evaluate and manage your risks for heart disease. In addition to checking your blood pressure, cholesterol numbers, blood sugar level, and body mass index (BMI), your doctor can give you diet and lifestyle recommendations and offer further resources to help you succeed. ▸▸ Learn CPR. You could save someone life! Find a course at www.heart. org . “Our goal is that everyone learns how to perform CPR so they are able to begin CPR until professional help arrives.” said Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo Every healthy choice makes a difference For fitness programs available right in your community, visit the Leisure Services page on the City of Sunrise website, www.sunrisefl.gov . For ongoing life-safety tips, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at SunriseRescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

February 2015 | Our city sunrise

▸▸ Do not leave bill payment envelopes in your mailbox. Deposit them in a post office collection box or at the local post office. Promptly remove incoming mail. ▸▸ Review your free annual credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com ▸▸ Don’t leave your Social Security Card in your wallet/purse and, ask why when someone requests your social security number. ▸▸ Never click on links sent to you by an unsolicited email. ▸▸ Don’t give your account number to anyone on the phone unless you’ve made the call to a company you know to be reputable. ▸▸ Shred personal and financial documents when you no longer need them. ▸▸ Don’t write your account number on the outside of an envelope.

What should I do if it happens to me?

▸▸ If you’ve detected fraudulent activities on your account contact your financial institution immediately. Make a note for your file of what institution was contacted, who you talked to and the date/time your call was made. ▸▸ Determine whether you will need a police report or take further action. ▸▸ In response to concerns over identity theft, numerous companies and financial institutions have stepped in with identity theft protection services that can help you monitor your accounts. These services may also include fraud alerts and freezes on your credit reports. ▸▸ Ask your financial institution about their identity theft program and see if it’s right for you.

Arthritis in the Foot and Ankle By Dr. Robert Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

A

ccording to the Centers for D isease Control ,

an estimated 52.5 million American adults suffer from some form of arthritis. As our nation’s population ages, the prevalence is expected to increase. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about arthritis in the foot and ankle: 1. What is arthritis? Arthritis is a degenerative process that may take place in any joint in the body. Cartilage which allows the joint to move smoothly starts to wear down. Bone spurring and bone cysts may occur as the joint wears abnormally. The joint starts to move out of its normal position creating pain with movement. A loss of joint movement also follows the arthritic process. 2. What causes arthritis? Most often arthritis is caused from an injury to the joint. The injury may occur as a child and it may manifest itself later in life. A bad injury to a bone or joint (fracture) may start the development of arthritis almost immediately after the injury. Arthritis is very common when a bone fractures into the joint. Malpositioning of the joint will cause abnormal wear and tear. It may also be seen in people who are excessively flatfooted, knock-kneed or bowlegged. It is also very common in people with bunions. 3. Will the arthritis get worse over time? In almost all cases arthritis in any joint will worsen. The joint will wear abnormally causing pain, limited motion of the joint, bone spurring and swelling around the joint. The joint will become excessively stiff causing pain with many activities. Difficulty with certain shoes may also be present. 4. Will medication help to lessen the pain and joint deformity? Oral medication will help to diminish some discomfort, but it will not change the degenerative process, which takes place slowly over time. 5. Will physical therapy be of any benefit? Physical therapy will help retain some movement in the joint and keep swelling to a minimum. It may also help to improve muscle strength. Over the long term it will be of limited benefit as the degenerative process will continue to take place. 6. Can surgery be of benefit if the arthritis is found early? Many procedures can be performed to assist in treating the degenerative process if found early. After a thorough history and physical examination x-rays are taken to assess the degree of joint damage. Occasionally if the damage is mild an arthroscopic or small open procedure may be necessary to remove abnormal bone and soft tissue. Cartilage that is lifted away from the bone is removed to allow the joint to function more normally. If a joint is out of position removing bone spurs and soft tissue may be of limited benefit. In this case the bones may need to be repositioned to allow more normal joint alignment. 7. Can anything be done if the arthritis is severe? In some cases the arthritis is severe and joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary. Joint replacements are an excellent option and may be necessary in older, more sedentary patients. Fusing the joint that is arthritic and not allowing it to move any longer is also an excellent approach to the treatment of arthritis. This eliminates any painful movement allowing a return to work and activities of daily living with minimal modifications. Some joints can be fused and still allow an athlete to resume professional sports 8. Will orthotics be of any benefit? Orthotics will assist in maintaining normal joint position. Support of the foot and placement of the foot in better anatomical position may redistribute stress more evenly in the foot and ankle region. This may help to lessen pain and possibly delay the need for surgery. They provide great benefits in people with big toe joint (turf toe, bunions) problems. Orthotics are also very useful in patients who are flatfooted, knock-kneed, bowlegged and in those with lower back pain. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
