Spring Has Arrived
S
pring is traditionally the welcome sign of
renewal and progress all around the world. For our neighbors to the north, it means the end (hopefully) of another brutal winter packed with powerful blizzards that blanketed much of the midwest and northeast. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Boston area is still digging out from another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. Here in South Florida, we’re fortunate to live the perpetual “Spring Break.” People from all over the country, and world, flock to Florida to take refuge from the cold and enjoy our mild temperatures, calming sea breezes and white sandy beaches. But, you don’t need to be a snowbird or tourist to enjoy all that Florida has to offer. With Spring Break later this month, why not spend some time enjoying the many splendors of the Sunshine State? Where else can you see endangered manatees, pre-historic alligators and pretty pink flamingos all in the same day? Where else can you relax and sunbathe during the day and then dance the night away on South Beach? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sand bar and then pull up for a delicious bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway? Only here in South Florida. On this happy note, let’s take some time to enjoy all that Florida has to offer and have some FUN! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Sunrise Hosts Events To Showcase The Works of Talented Teens BY JILL SHARPE
T
he S unrise Civic Center Art Gallery was a feast for the eyes and ears on January 23rd as attendees enjoyed a double dose of the arts. The “On the Edge” juried art exhibit held a reception to recognize teenage artists on the same night as the Lyrical Lounge Teen Open Mic Night. The artwork, on display from January 8th through January 31st, showed styles ranging from traditional paintings to the modern, bright colors of graphic design. The competition was open to any Broward County high school student who wanted to submit a piece of original art that was completed within the last two years. Categories covered photography, digital media, sculpture, oil, watercolor, graphic design, acrylic, pencil and mixed media. First, Second and Third prizes were named in each category, depending on the number of submissions, along with a Best in Show winner among the more than 30 entries. The Diniz family of Sunrise was on hand to support their son Kevin, who won an Honorable Mention for one of his works. Gefet Diniz, Kevin’s father, said his son has loved painting since he was about four years old “He got his first trophy from a Sunrise Fire Department art competition, he’s shown his work at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, and we’re proud that he still gets straight ‘A’s.” “I’ve always liked to be creative, and show people what I see,” said Kevin Diniz. “I thought it was cool that the city did this event for us. Art is kind of a hobby for me, but I’d like to get into engineering so I can still use my creativity there.” This was the first time that the City of Sunrise hosted a juried art exhibition for teenagers and the free event was standing room only. Tennille Shuster, an Associate Professor in the Division of Performing and Visual Arts at Nova Southeastern University and Vincent Villanueva, a Design Specialist for the City of Sunrise served as judges for the exhibit. One teenager, Mario Pimentel of Sunrise, was awarded third place for “Stradivarious Collision”, a marker and watercolor composition. “Art started as a hobby, but it’s grown into something that I want to make a career out of and be a graphic designer,” said Pimentel. “Art lets me express myself and transmit messages without using words. It’s nerve-wracking to have art judged, but it’s cool to show people your message and share what your thoughts are.” The Lyrical Lounge is sponsored by the Jason Taylor Foundation, the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, the SPEAK! collective, and the Community Foundation of Broward. The open mic night takes place every other month and has been going on for over a year to provide local teens with a creative space. ing ability sign-up for a chance to impress the crowd. Davinia Osborne described what it was like to step on stage. “It was nerve-wracking at first, but it’s a great feeling to be accepted by the crowd and its exhilarating to perform in front of complete strangers” said the Sunrise resident. “When I first came here, I was blown away and remember thinking that it’s unbelievable that kids my age have this much talent. I’m going to study mass communications since I love to write. I’ve competed in literary fairs and have already been published.” Many civic leaders came out to celebrate the creativity of these emerging artists. “I’m excited to see so many kids here as this gives kids an avenue to express themselves,” said Piper High School Principal Angel Gomez. “It’s very different when strangers see their art, not just at their high school. Gomez said he goes out of his way to come to events like this so that students know how important
they are. It’s a great opportunity for students to network with kids from other schools and form positive links. Teen participatory art events such as this one build great bridges throughout the entire school district.” Organizers are discussing hosting another teen art show in October, along with the possibility of youth-oriented writing and poetry workshops. Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new
tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy
World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.
techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

groups and food and retail vendors. Dog owners had the chance to show off their dogs talents in Choice Voice and Gnarliest Trick competitions and plenty of dogs enjoyed strutting their stuff in a Grooviest Threads (Best Dressed) contest. Leisure Services Director Beth Zickar said the best part of the event is always watching the dogs having such a good time. “We’re always looking for new, innovative features to include in our events to keep them current and exciting,” Zickar said. “We know next year’s Woofstock will be bigger and better than ever.”

How do you help clients with personal injury issues? My office helps individuals seek

I’ve worked hard to establish a reputation as a lawyer who practices with ethics and professionalism. I was elected by my colleagues to the board of directors of the Broward County Bar Association. What are the key things that people should consider before hiring a personal injury attorney? If you’re like most people, you would
not consider the prospect of handling your own case. Naturally, you want to find the best personal injury attorney out there. Personal injury lawyers cover a range of issues stemming from personal injury, wrongful death, property damage, and liability determinations. When looking for a lawyer you should concentrate on the lawyer’s experience, skill level, commitment, location and fee structure. For example, your attorney should be well versed in negligence law, know how to deal with insurance and health care companies, and know how to effectively prepare and take a case to trial (or settle if a reasonable amount is offered). Also, it’s important that you check the attorney’s background and references. Lastly, a good attorney will typically accept your case on a contingency or “no recover-no fee” basis if the attorney feels your case has any merit.
Do you offer a free consultation? Yes. In order to win a personal injury case it is not enough to prove someone was at fault or negligent, you must also prove the person caused injury by their actions or inactions. We encourage everyone to call and discuss their case to determine if it has merit. The law offices of Russell M. Thompson are located at 7771 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Atrium West Building, Suite 216 in Sunrise (one block east of University Drive). For information call 954-316-8988 or email rthompson@rmtlawfirm.com. Village Elementary Renaissance Fair Provides A Learning Opportunity and Lots of Fun BY JILL SHARPE
T
he sound of swords clanging together broke the quiet
of a clear, cool Saturday morning as the Second Annual Renaissance Fair took place on January 31st. The event was hosted by Village Elementary School in Sunrise and was open to the entire community. Students have been studying the Renaissance in school and the fair was a way to take the curriculum out of the classroom and give the community a fun, educational way to learn about that period of time. The school has also been incorporating chess into the school day as part of a City of Sunrise initiative to encourage interest in the game. Second and third graders are taught the basics of chess and start to get experience playing it in fourth grade. Students, school staff, and parents played chess together at the festival. Mattie Tate works as a media clerk at Village Elementary and was at the Renaissance Fair teaching festival-goers the intricacies of chess. “Chess teaches kids to focus and have a strategy,” said Tate. “You have to see the whole board and use math to calculate what each piece is worth to you and to your opponent. This game takes a lot of concentration as you have to ask yourself: what’s my strategy? Am I playing offense or defense? Chess teaches you sportsmanship, but also to be still and be quiet.” Along with the traditional chessboards, the highlight of the day was the “human chessboard”. The chess “pieces” were school children from Village Elementary that were divided up into a red team and a black team. The children wore emblems on their outfits representing their role as a knight, queen, etc with some players carrying plastic swords or wearing crowns. The board itself was a large plastic board taped to the ground that took up much of the school’s outdoor basketball court. Each space on the chessboard was designated with a letter and number combination starting with A1 so that the children who were the chess “pieces” knew where to go. Staff from Village Elementary and Plantation High School would call out the moves and the players would make the corresponding move. Parental involvement has long been a hallmark of Village Elementary’s success and the Renaissance Fair was no exception. “I wanted to volunteer today as my daughter is in fifth grade here,” said Winona Ballard of Sunrise, who was helping out at an arts and crafts table. “I really like watching the sword fights and seeing the girls dressed as fairies dance around. This is just a nice, safe event for the kids to do on a Saturday.” The festival began with children dressed as fairies dancing around a maypole. Throughout the day, volunteers taught attendees how to use wooden swords. A volunteer dressed as Snow White read Puff the Magic Dragon for story time for the younger kids while a puppet show went on in the background. Arts and crafts activities included stations where children were making crowns and shields and finger knitting, a type of handicraft that does not use needles to manipulate the yarn. School staff member Amrita Sookhansingh had a small crowd of students patiently wait their turn for face painting. Children played in the inflatable bounce house while parents and teachers munched on hot dogs, popcorn, and snow cones. The afternoon wrapped up with a costume contest for attendees dressed in Renaissance attire. Parents, teachers, school staff, and children enjoyed spending time together outside of the hustle and bustle of the typical school day. “My favorite part was seeing the girls dressed as fairies dance around the maypole,” said Deidra McDowell, a fifth grade teacher at Village Elementary. “The kids here get a great learning experience with playing chess but it’s also nice for them to just come out and have fun. Some of the boys are playing football, some are just listening to the Renaissance music.” Village Elementary School is located at 2100 Northwest 70th Avenue in Sunrise. Sunrise Fire Rescue reminds you to test your smoke detectors and change the batteries when you change your clocks. Working smoke alarms save lives. Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes without them. Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is an important step you can take to help protect your family and your home. It is important to maintain your smoke alarms and ensure they are working properly. Being prepared ahead of time can make the difference in the event of a fire or other emergency where your smoke alarms may just be what helps to save your life.

Here are some safety tips on smoke detectors from the National Fire Prevention Association: ▸▸ Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. ▸▸ Because smoke rises, install smoke alarms high on a wall or on a ceiling, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep smoke alarms 10 feet or more away from the stove to reduce false alarms. ▸▸ It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms which will signal all smoke alarms to sound together if one smoke alarm sounds. ▸▸ Replace batteries in all smoke alarms twice a year or sooner if an alarm “chirps,” warning that the battery is low. ▸▸ Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the “test” button. Replace any that do not respond per the manufacturer’s instructions. ▸▸ Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond. ▸▸ Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 years old. ▸▸ Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices use strobe lights and bed shakers. ▸▸ Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan. Make sure you have a plan in case of fire. This is also a great time for the whole family to create and practice escape routes. Always remember to include two ways out from each room, and designate a safe meeting place outside to wait until help arrives. Remember: Get out and stay out! Never go back into a burning building. Improve Your Teeth with New Technology By Dr. Michael Maruri
If you are looking for a way to make your teeth look better, there are many new reasons to smile. Along with traditional braces, Clear Orthodontic Solutions is on the pulse of orthodontic technology. We offer a variety of new services that will dramatically improve the look of your teeth, often with less time and pain than traditional methods. Dr. Michael Maruri also offers Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, Ceramic (clear) Braces, and Lingual Braces. Invisalign and Invisalign Teen treatment offers clear aligners that are virtually invisible. Like ghosts working on your teeth, you can’t see them, but you know they’re there once things start moving! The aligners are removable, easy to clean, and allow you to eat whatever you want. For patients in need of more traditional braces, clear (ceramic) brackets are an amazing alternative. Clear brackets on the teeth are hardly noticeable and very versatile. Not only does orthodontic treatment give you a beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing may be difficult. A bad bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a bad bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints. Straight teeth are less prone to decay and injury. Decay results when the bacteria in plaque feed on carbohydrates (sugar and starch) we eat or drink to produce acids that can cause cavities. Plaque can also increase the risk for periodontal (gum) disease. According to the Journal of Dental Research, harmful bacteria below the gum surface of crowded teeth invade the gingival tissue, harm connective tissue and cause inflammation. Straightening your teeth can make a significant difference in having a healthy heart and lower risk of diabetes. As for injuries to teeth, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in an accident. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, selfconfidence and self-image – important qualities at every age. So now that the New Year has arrived, make sure your new smile follows close behind. We look forward to facilitating your transformation in 2015!

any clients who are considering their
estate planning for the first time become overwhelmed by the vocabulary involved in the process and the many different planning options available to them. In particular, clients are often confused about the difference between a will and a trust, and, more importantly, which option is best for them. I hope that the brief discussion below will help to clarify some of these questions for you, so that you can be all the more prepared for your first meeting with an estate planning attorney.
Q: What is a will? A: A will is simply a document that provides your instructions regarding what should be done with your assets after you die. In the will, you will name the person who you wish to be in charge of managing the distribution of your assets, paying your debts, and ensuring that all of the wishes contained in your will are realized. Q: What is a Revocable Living Trust? A: A Revocable Living Trust is a document that creates a legal relationship in which one person, the trustee, holds property for the benefit of another, the beneficiary. The person who sets up the trust, the settlor, may also be named as trustee until he or she dies. Think of the trust as a big box. You, as the settlor, would place all of the assets that you wish to protect into the box. Property such as real estate, stocks, bonds, and personal possessions may all be placed “inside” the box. The trustee then protects the contents of the box and distributes the contents in accordance with the instructions that you laid out in the trust document. Your trust may be set up for your own benefit during your lifetime, and then for the benefit of another after your death. As the name implies, this type of trust may be amended or revoked during your lifetime. Q: Which option is best? A: There is no simple answer to this question, as there are many different factors to consider when choosing a will over a trust. The decision is a personal one that must be carefully considered with the assistance of an estate planning attorney in order to meet your needs. A will is normally less costly to set up, but it must go through a legal process called “probate.” Probate can sometimes be both lengthy and costly, and may also result in legal battles between family members. Your assets cannot be distributed until after the probate process is complete. Further, during the probate process, your debts, which may include an estate tax, will be paid before your assets are distributed to your heirs. This, quite naturally, diminishes the amount of your heirs’ inheritance. Finally, your will becomes a public record once it is filed with the probate court. A trust, on the other hand, is usually more complicated and more expensive to set up and requires constant and meticulous management for the life of the trust. Unlike a will, however, the trust would avoid the probate process. This means that your assets would be distributed to your beneficiaries immediately, unless your trust instructs otherwise. Another advantage of a trust is that it allows you to “rule from the grave” by including provisions requiring performance of certain tasks (such as graduating from college or attaining a certain age) before the assets can be distributed to a particular beneficiary. Further, trusts can be used to plan for possible incapacity due to illness, and can be used to make sure that your bills are paid and that your family is provided for. Additionally, trusts may be utilized as part of a tax and financial plan that will help to lessen the impact of estate taxes on the distributions that your beneficiaries stand to receive. Finally, unlike wills, trusts are private and do not become part of the public record. As you can see, choosing between a will and a trust is not a simple task. Be sure to consult with your estate planning attorney and financial planner to make sure you fully-understand these and other estate planning tools. Madeleine Q. Mannello Scott, Esq. works at the law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates, located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

ask the Sheriff
Women Making History! By Sheriff Scott J. Israel
A
s we observe Women ’ s H istory M onth in
March, we want to recognize and honor the many ways women continue to make Broward County a great place to live, work and visit. Women have led the charge toward full equality in the workplace and are critical in building the strong moral character of our county’s youth. Over the years, women made strong choices that brought historic changes in our county. In 1974, two women became the first female road patrol deputies to join the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Since then, many women have chosen a career in law enforcement. Today, I am proud to say that we have women throughout BSO who are in management and command – places and positions that, historically, were held by men. Our chief of staff is a woman as are others with the title of major, director, captain and lieutenant. Women also serve as K-9 handlers, the crime lab director and undercover detectives, just to name a few. However, leadership is not about being the first woman in any position, but about attracting the best person for the job. Since taking office over two years ago, my administration has created a level playing field so that women can more fairly compete for higher positions throughout BSO. Today, BSO has more women with the rank of sergeant and captain than under any previous administration. Consider the sergeant in charge of our aviation unit. As a pilot, she assists in finding wanted suspects from the air and saves lives by transporting injured patients safely to the hospital. Additionally, women also hold significant positions in Law Enforcement, Detention, Fire Rescue, Community Services, Regional Communications, Administration and every other corner of BSO. In a traditionally male-dominated field, it may surprise some that women make up 41 percent of BSO’s work force. In 2014, we added 148 women to our workforce and promoted 187 other women because they were the best candidates. Twenty-one percent of our sworn deputies are women, which is well above the national average of 12.7 percent. These positive changes came over time through real cultural change in the agency. Everyone now understands that – black, white, Hispanic, male, female, gay, straight, Christian, Jew and Muslim – opportunities for advancement in BSO are open to all with the skill, leadership and drive to succeed. One of the principle cornerstones of all police work is strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the community. The National Center for Women and Policing documents how female officers respond in emergency situations in a unique way that is crucial in building trust between police and the communities they serve. Overall, women officers rely more on communication to defuse potentially violent situations. BSO’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) deputies utilize this strategy when assessing situations involving individuals with mental illness. We encourage this style of smart policing agencywide, which grants mutual respect between deputies and our community. Finally, as 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we remember our agency’s many historic achievements. We extend our thanks and gratitude to all the women of BSO – past and present – that helped make BSO the great public service agency it is today. I am deeply honored to work with these women. They have brought significant contributions to public safety and our community is a better place because of them. Our women are making history!

Understanding The Benefits of Credit Unions By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
L
Mina is a seven-year-old poodle mix. Her favorite person is anyone who takes her for a walk. She likes to play all the time, especially with her toy duck. Mina doesn’t like other dogs because she is very jealous but she loves all humans. She enjoys eating carrots and hates the noise of the dryer when she finishes her bath. Mina was last seen walking around Oakland Park with her parents.

How about lowering your car payment? This is a great time to get to know your local credit unions. Let’s get a fresh cup of coffee and discuss the credit union difference… What makes a credit union different from other financial institutions? Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983. How can I become a credit union member? Many people believe they are not eligible to join a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member, even if you move away. Is my money safe in a credit union? Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00. Credit Unions seem to have limited locations…Over 5,005 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear. Technology? Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system. If you prefer personal assistance with your finances, credit unions continue to offer professional and knowledgeable staff that will be happy to assist you. Ageless Medical Offers a Diagnostic Approach to Regaining Your Youth BY JILL SHARPE
is a National Trainer with Allergan, the makers of Botox, Juvederm and Voluma. She trains South Florida Doctors and other Medical Practitioners on injecting Botox® and Juvederm®. Erin is considered one of the top injectors in South Florida.
What can customers expect when they visit Ageless Medical? Honesty by setting proper expectations is why we rank 5 out of 5 STARS on YELP and 4.9 out of 5 STARS on Google. We have earned this amazing reputation by fostering a very patient centric environment where we listen to our patients concerns and then over exceed on their expectations. This sets us apart from many other aesthetic practices that have a set solution in mind before you come in. We are able to be more independent because we have such a large range of effective solutions and so much experience in the medical aesthetic space.
What differentiates you from the competition? Besides the
I
f you want to look as young as you feel
in 2015, then you owe it to yourself to visit Ageless Medical, a seven-year old Medical Aesthetic Practice located in Cooper City. The practice offers the very latest, non-invasive, FDA approved procedures performed by experts in a warm, comfortable setting at competitive prices. Victor Owoc, MBA, who owns Ageless Medical with his wife Erin Owoc, ARNP, recently answered some questions about the Practice.
What products/services does your Practice offer? We offer wrinkle relaxing solutions
such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and dermal fillers such as Sculptra, Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero & Radiesse. We also offer skin rejuvenation procedures such as eMatrix, SkinPen MicroNeedling, Medical Facials, Chemical Peels and Hydra Facials. Additionally, we offer laser hair removal for dark and light skin, laser tattoo removal; face, neck and decollate skin tightening solutions with Ultherapy; fat reduction with LipoSonix; and body contouring and cellulite reduction with Viora Reaction.
What is special about your staff? The many
years of aesthetic experience our medical practitioners have is unique in this business. Our medical providers are not only experts in the Medical Aesthetic space with an average 14 years experience, many are also “outside trainers” to other medical practitioners in the aesthetic industry. Even our front desk team are skin experts with many of them being aestheticians. A good example of this is Lisa Matire, Laser/Skincare Specialist - CME, CCE. Lisa educates and certifies Laser Technicians seeing laser hair removal certification in South Florida. Erin Owoc, ARNP

experience of our staff and our reputation, it would have to be the extensive range of the advanced technologies that we own (laser, radio frequency, micro needling, ultrasound etc.) A good example is our Naturalase Tattoo Laser. It is the most powerful tattoo removal laser on the market (and only one in South Florida) that allows the patient a shorter treatment time and fewer visits to completely remove their tattoo. Other examples are Ultherapy and Reaction, two of the leaders in face and body skin tightening that we own. Both are great examples of new technology translating to younger looking skin.
What are the latest trends in your business? Because of advancements in technology such as Ultheraphy and new dermal fillers such
as Voluma, patients are able to get very close to surgical face lift results without having surgery. These non-invasive procedures are only going to get more advanced in the future and knowing that many patients that do not desire (or have the time) to handle the downtime of having surgery will continue to fuel the growth of these offerings.
What do you offer that is new in the field? Reaction by Viora,
Ultherapy and LipoSonix are the latest technologies we have acquired this year. Reaction is a painless procedure to tighten the skin on your body and reduce cellulite. It takes multiple sessions but the results are very impressive. Ultherapy is a game changer when it comes to a skin tighten technology to lift your face and neck with only one treatment using focused ultrasound. LipoSonix allows our patients to lose 1 inch off their waste (abdomen or flanks) in 1 hour and only requires 1 treatment. Ageless Medical is located at 10640 Griffin Road, Suite 102 in Cooper City. They are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone them at 954-680-8330, email them at info@AgelessMED.com or visit them at AgelessMED.com.

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich
S
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Eight years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past seven years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program
and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.
A
pril Claxton recently
lost 40 pounds in only six weeks at Slender Fit U. She was anxious to share her story to motivate others to do the same. Why did you decide to lose weight? I have always been chunky. When I turned 35, my body started responding differently and I gained a lot of weight. I had difficulty breathing, walking and sleeping. I always felt swollen and tired, and spent most of my time at home on the couch. I have tried every diet out there. I was contemplating surgery, but decided April Claxton lost 40 lbs. in six weeks. to try Slender Fit U first. What were your results? I am 5’6. I started the program at 296 lbs. and lost 40 of them in only six weeks. I am excited to lose the rest. How do you feel now? In only six weeks, I am like a different person. I am now exercising and have gotten rid of several medications, including one for high blood pressure. I feel empowered, more confident and very sexy. People are looking at me instead of past me. I feel pretty and alive! Why were you more successful with Slender Fit U than other diets? I never had a real coach who supported me throughout the process. Geri answered all of my questions and helped me stay on track. She wanted me to succeed as much as I did. In addition, I saw instant results, with a 10 lb. loss in only ten days. When I saw how well my body responded, I knew I had found the right program.
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
Can you purchase HCG over the counter? No. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life.
Lost 30 lbs. in six weeks.

Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
