That’s why planeloads of northerners are arriving daily to take in the sun and fun during this Spring Break season. Why not take advantage of everything we typically take for granted? Pack up the towels, lounge chairs and picnic basket and spend the day at the beach. Head down to the Keys for some of the world’s best snorkeling and fishing. Or simply enjoy dining under the stars at one of the area’s award-winning restaurants. Now is also the time many families are starting to finalize their summer plans. If you have children that means picking the best camp programs. The choices are seemingly endless, with options for everything from traditional day camps to more specialized camps focused on sports, robotics, drama, arts and crafts, or learning a second language. Wherever your summer travels take you, don’t forget to take along your local Our City magazine and send us your picture. Little Free Libraries ~ For The Love of Literature By Beverly Perkins

O

group of amazing kids from the Sunrise Leadership Academy’s Class of 2013 who worked diligently with local elementary schools, community groups and corporate sponsors to bring Little Free Libraries to four of Sunrise’s parks and the civic center. Little Free Libraries is not a regular library in a large structure with librarians, thousands of books and hours of operation. One doesn’t need a library card either. These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look similar to a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their favorite literature and Sunrise Civic Center stories in a fun and unusual way. The concept started in Wisconsin in 2009 by Todd Bol who wanted to honor his mother, a beloved school teacher, who loved reading. He built a small model of a schoolhouse, filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard with a sign that said, “FREE BOOKS”. This little library that could, now has over 15,000 registered Flamingo Park little free libraries all over

the world with more on the way. The notion,”Take A Book, Return A Book” couldn’t be more simple. It’s a borrowing system that the community gets to enjoy. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. If you have gently-used paperbacks or hardcovTake A Book, ers you’d like to contribute, Return A Book please place them in the Little Free Library nearest you, or bring them to the Leisure Services office on the second floor of the Sunrise Civic Center - 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard. Ready, Set, Go Sign Up! By Beverly Perkins

I

t ’ s that time of year again when many

communities gather all over the globe with one common goal: to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and to raise funds to find a cure for cancer. This monumental fundraiser, and the single largest non-profit event in the world, is The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. This year the Sunrise chapter will hold its’ event on Friday, May 1st at The Sunrise Athletic Complex located at 11501 NW 44th Street at 6:00pm and it continues until Saturday, May 2nd. Last year this chapter raised over $62,000 beating their goal by $10,000. This year they plan on exceeding that figure with Rick Case KIA as their Platinum Sponsor. These funds will be used for groundbreaking cancer research and important local programs and services for cancer patients and their families in Sunrise and Broward County. Unlike any other walkathon or fundraiser, teams are formed. These can be groups of families, friends, co-workers and other organizations. If you cannot form your own team and want to participate, a Relay For Life Specialist can help you. Teams gather on site at sundown and spend the night walking, running and cheering each other on. Because cancer never sleeps, a member of each team must have at least one participant representing themselves on the track at all times. Even though cancer is not fun, this event certainly is. Teams are encouraged to show their spirit by decorating their tents and tees, playing games, listening to live entertainment, eating great food and of course, making new lifelong friends. The

overall goal is that by doing so, funds are being raised and awareness is made against the battle against cancer. The Relay For Life remains consistent in formalities no matter what part of the world it is in. One can expect seven parts where ever they are participating. Everyone receives a great big welcome at the Opening Ceremony. After that, the relay starts with the symbolic Survivor Lap. This honors survivors by allowing them to celebrate life and their victory over cancer. The next lap is the Caregiver Lap, which recognizes those who have given care to cancer patients. After those two important tributes, everyone is invited to walk together during the Opening Lap. Next is the touching Luminaria Ceremony where luminaria bags and candles are lit to honor loved ones who have passed on or are fighting the disease. The following segment is Individual Walking which is observed throughout the night along with games, entertainment and activities. Finally, the relay concludes with the Fight Back Ceremony. Participants take a final lap and pledge to continue to take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatments and prevention. For more information about Relay For Life and how to get involved, contact: Jessica DeBlois, Relay For Life Specialist (954)564-0880 x 7537 or Jessica.Deblois@cancer.org and visit www.relayforlife.org/ sunrisefl

Sunrise Wants Their Residents To Party By Beverly Perkins

E

veryone loves a good party

and The City of Sunrise sure knows how to help its residents put one on. Besides having community festivities in local shopping centers, did you know that The City will actually assist you with creating your own? One part of the Community Development Department’s mission statement says they want to enhance the quality of life for its residents. There’s no better way to reinforce this goal than by giving neighbors the opportunity to get to know each other. Therefore, they encourage their citizens to meet each other and get involved by providing resources for having successful “neighborhood block parties”. One would never think that a local police department would assist in the process of helping neighborhoods have a party. Fortunately, the Sunrise Police Department’s Office of Community Policing would love to offer their support. All they ask you to do is plan your event a few weeks in advance. This allows them time to help you with planning, scheduling and obtaining permission to close your street. The department will give you flyers to distribute to your neighbors along with coloring books and other giveaways for children. They will have the fire department personnel bring fire engines and EMS vehicles while Police Patrol Units and K9 Patrol give demonstrations. Of course, both depend upon availability. Also, on hand for convenience is bicycle registration and children’s fingerprinting. To ensure you have a fantastic event, it’s wise to do the following: ▸▸ Make sure the entire block is aware of the date and time. ▸▸ Have all neighbors sign an acknowledgement that they agree to the street closing during the hours specified.

10

APRIL 2015 | OUR CITY SUNRISE

▸▸ Limit the time of the “Block Party” to no longer than 4 daylight hours. ▸▸ Do not use large items or park cars blocking the roadway. Emergency vehicles need to have easy access in case a need should arise. Safety cones will be provided. ▸▸ Limit the availability of alcoholic beverages. ▸▸ Have a contact person, usually the person who arranges the party, available for neighbors, police and city officials. Hopefully, the Block Party announcement will be well received and everyone can take part and become involved. Take advantage of this outstanding service available to Sunrise residents. It’s the perfect way to meet those that live around you and those that make your community safe. Be sure to thank your community officials with some great BBQ and plenty of smiles. To get started and find out if you can close your street to traffic during your Block Party, call the Sunrise Police Department’s Office of Community Policing at (954)746-3383.

Cervical Disc Herniation: A Pain in the Neck that is Treatable Scott Robertson, MD - Cleveland Clinic Florida Neurosurgeon Cervical (neck) disc herniation is a common problem that is seen most often in people aged 35 to 55 years, although older people can have it as well. This problem is becoming more common as people spend hours each day with their neck bent to look at computers, tablets or cell phones. The spine, or backbone, is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae that are stacked to form the spinal column. Between the vertebrae are flat, round cushioning pads called intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers. Each disc has a soft rubbery center

made of cartilage like our ear lobe. A herniated disc – also called a slipped disc or ruptured disc – occurs when pressure from the vertebrae above and below force some or all of the “rubbery cartilage” through a weakened or torn part of the outer layer. Symptoms and diagnosis The symptoms of a herniated disc include neck pain, headache, pain radiating down the arm, pain or spasms in the shoulder, and numbness, tingling or weakness in the fingers are all signs. Herniated discs can affect anyone, but they are slightly more

common in men than in women. People who frequently lift heavy items also are at increased risk. If you have pain in your neck or arms and shoulders, your physician can order a variety of tests to determine the cause. These might include more familiar tests such as X-rays or MRI or CT scans. It also could include a myelogram, in which as dye is injected into the spinal canal before a CT scan. Another possible test is an electromyelogram, which involves placing small needles into various muscles and measuring their nerve activity. Treatment Most herniated discs improve on their own or with treatments such as physical therapy, steroids or traction. Putting ice or moist heat on the affected area provides some short-term pain relief too. When these steps are not enough, spinal injections of antiinflammatory medicine can reduce swelling and increase mobility. These injections are referred to as epidurals or nerve blocks. For more serious cases, a surgical decompression around the nerve root and removal of a small part of the disc which is pushing on the nerve gives pain relief. For extreme neck and arm pain, we can remove the entire disc, replace it with a bone graft and fuse it to a metal plate. Alternatively, we can replace the bad disc with an artificial one. These tend to last at least 20 years but are not indicated for older patients with multi-level disc disease or other mobility problems such as arthritis. Recovery from surgery Most patients spend one night in the hospital, then need to take it easy for about 2 weeks. Some need to wear a neck collar briefly, but most can resume normal activities in 6 to 8 weeks.

Sandpiper Elementary is in Full Bloom By Beverly Perkins

S

andpiper E lementary was one of the chosen recipients of a

grant given by Hands On Broward. This grant was provided by the Children Services Council and State Farm Insurance Agencies. Hands On Broward connects individuals and groups to meaningful hands-on service opportunities at over 600 nonprofit organizations in Broward County. Their purpose is to inspire, equip and mobilize individuals to take action by promoting positive changes in the county. There’s no one better to be inspired than elementary age children who can learn early on some great lessons that they can carry on throughout their lives.

This grant provided the tools necessary to teach students how to grow a garden. These tools consist of growth bags, soil, a 50 foot hose, a water wand, herb and vegetable seeds, plant food and bug spray. Sandpiper Elementary is lucky enough to be able to have two gardens which gifted classes, grades 1-5, nurture and tend to all while learning. Gardening is a perfect hands-on multi-sensory activity. “Gardening and plant care teaches real-world application of student learning in science”, says Principal LaChance. It can be incorporated in all areas of the curriculum from Language Arts to Literature. Vocabulary is learned by labeling items growing, parts of a plant, parts of the garden, garden equipment, etc. Students can make journal entries about the process and the progress. Graphing plant growth, counting and dividing seeds and charting weather temperatures are great ways to include mathematical concepts. Designing and planting a garden develops organizational skills and analytical thinking. Meanwhile, it’s a science lab all by itself where exploration and problem-solving skills can be developed. Mrs. G’s first grade class has already planted tomato, kale, strawberries, eggplant, cabbage and mint. Their favorite books consist of “The Giving Tree”, “A Tree is Nice” and “The Carrot Seed”. They have grown as much as their seedlings this year and love being asked, “How does your garden grow?”

Make A Move And Play Chess By Beverly Perkins

T

he game of Chess is one of the

world’s most popular games, played by millions worldwide in various settings. This classic game of the mind is played everywhere and gaining more exposure with chess clubs popping up all over. Many schools have even added it to their curriculum. Chess boards are an inexpensive addition to classrooms. They challenge children and help them grow and develop mentally. In countries where chess is offered widely in schools, students exhibit excellence in the ability to recognize complex patterns. Therefore, these students excel in math and science.

“According to research, test scores improved by 17.3% for students regularly engaged in chess classes, compared with only 4.6% for children participating in other forms of enriched activities,” states 4-time World Champion, Susan Polgar. Countless studies over the years have continuously showed the same results. Chess strengthens a child’s mental clarity, fortitude, stability and overall health. It

12

also aids in the growth of certain areas of the brain and mind. If a child learns to play at a young age, they will develop analytical, synthetic and decisionmaking skills of which they can transfer to real life. They will also learn the nature of competition while gaining confidence. The City of Sunrise has collaborated with community partners to promote the scholastic benefits of chess by encouraging the development of after-school

Participants gather from 10:00am to 12:00pm in the lobby of the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard. Sandpiper Elementary Is Ob“SEUSS”ed By Beverly Perkins

“T

oday you are you that is truer than true . There is no one

alive who is youer than you.” – Dr. Seuss There certainly was no one like the infamous Dr. Seuss who created magical stories with lots of color, whimsical characters and clever tongue-twisting, rhyming words. The most acclaimed children’s author and illustrator, Theodor Seuss Geisel, is celebrated in schools across the nation each year during the week of his birthday. Dr. Seuss has had a tremendous impact on literacy for youngsters. Many, as young as kindergarten age, are able to recognize the Cat in the Hat symbol on his books. They are also able to recite lines from some of his most popular titles. The celebration coincides with the National Education Association (NEA), “Read Across America Day” which encourages young children to read, read, read. This year, the highlighted book is a Seuss classic, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go”. The story chronicles the tale of a child ready to experience life, while navigating the ups and downs and processing the variety of emotions that come along with it. The overall message applies to a preschooler entering kindergarten, a senior going off to college and just about anyone who may be embarking on a new journey. It delivers a message of hope and inspiration.

“And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 1/2 percent guaranteed).” – Dr. Seuss This was actually the last book published in Dr. Seuss’ lifetime. March 2nd

would have marked the celebrated author’s 111th birthday. Sandpiper Elementary loves a celebration and they went all out to honor the good doc and his cast of characters. Administrators and teachers took the opportunity to show their spirit by putting on a pep rally. Some even dressed up in typical Seuss attire to get the children excited for the upcoming week’s festivities. Parents were also encouraged to get in the spirit by becoming involved and volunteering.

“If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.” – Dr. Seuss From the Cat in the Hat, to Thing 1 and Thing 2, they put on a day for their students with so much to do. Volunteers came in to read to the classes. They made red and white striped hats and delicious treats for the masses. Science lessons got gooey with Bartholomew’s “oobleck” in older grades. While kindergarteners loved marching the halls in a parade. One could hear “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”, “Fox In Socks” and “Green Eggs and Ham”. The biggest highlight of the day was that no one needed to take exams.

Mayor’s Message

It’s Easy Being Green In Sunrise.

Water Safety and Your Family

By Michael Ryan, Mayor of Sunrise

By Thomas Dibernardo, Sunrise Fire Chief

A

pril in S unrise is as green as spring

itself! We’re proud of our many sustainability initiatives and are always striving to make our community healthier and more economically and environmentally sound. Of course, fun and family are important parts of this objective – so we are excited to host our annual Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 4, at Sawgrass Sanctuary. Join us for live music, children’s activities, amazing food, and plenty of interesting and educational exhibits. As always, admission is free and we’ll have great green giveaways: The first 1,500 Earth Day attendees will receive a reusable tote bag and a BPA-free water bottle that can be refilled all day at our complimentary water station. After the Festival, you’ll want to continue your green ways. It’s not too late to take advantage of Conservation Pays, a rebate and incentive program offered by select water utilities countywide – including the City of Sunrise. Utilities customers (including those who own a single-family home, town home or condo, or operate multi-family housing units or a business, non-profit organization, or institution) can qualify to receive free low-flow shower heads, as well as rebates on the purchase of water- and money-saving toilets. Visit www.conservationpays. com for all the details. Sunrise also participates in the Recyclebank program, which rewards residents for recycling and other green activities. Visit www.recyclebank.com to register.

This month, you can also do the environment a favor by safely disposing of paint, chemicals, batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, and more at our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off Event scheduled for Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Sunrise City Hall. Sunrise residents also have the option of bringing HHW to Wheelabrator’s Davie facility on one Saturday each month. For a complete list of accepted items and other details, visit www.sunrisefl.gov/hhw. Other April highlights include the Sunrise Police Department’s Community Block Party at Sam’s Club on Saturday, April 4; another terrific installment of our Tunes ‘N Trucks concert series – this one featuring Billy Joel tribute band Turnstiles – on Friday, April 17; and a wonderful performance by the Sunrise Pops on Sunday, April 26. Have a wonderful month! Mayor Michael J. Ryan For more information about our great city, including the events and programs I’ve mentioned here, please visit us online at www. sunrisefl.gov and www.facebook.com/sunrisefl.

S

pring has arrived, and folks through -

out South Florida will be heading to the nearest pools and beaches to cool off. Water activities offer endless opportunities for fun and fitness, but lack of supervision and safety precautions can lead to tragedy. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1 - 4 years old in Broward County, according to the Florida Department of Health. However, the risk of drowning is significantly reduced if we use multiple layers of protection. These layers of protection should always include the following:

▸▸ Supervision - Always have a designated “Water Watcher” when children are swimming. This needs to be a responsible adult whose undivided attention is on those in and around the water. Children must be taught from an early age never to go near the water without an adult. ▸▸ Barriers - Use child-proof locks on all doors, door alarms, pool fences, and self-closing and self-latching gates. ▸▸ Swimming and Water Safety Lessons – Even the youngest children can learn skills to help them to be safer in and around the water. Caregivers should learn to swim as well. ▸▸ Preparation - Learn CPR and keep proper safety gear, including a phone, life-vests, hook, & ring buoy, near the pool. If your child is missing, always check the pool first.

Be sure to enroll your child in swim lessons as soon as possible. April through October, the City of Sunrise offers one session of eight swim lessons per year free of charge to Sunrise residents. These group lessons are for children 3 – 12 years of age. Vouchers for swim lessons are also available for children four years of age and under, funded by the Children’s Services Council and available through the Broward County’s SWIM Central program. These $40 vouchers can be applied to the already low-cost swim lessons offered through the City of Sunrise. Children as young as 10 months can begin lessons through the Parent and Tot classes; private lessons are available at 18 months and up. Vouchers may be requested by calling 954-357-7946 (SWIM) or by email at swimcentral@broward.org. For more information on swim lessons, visit the City of Sunrise website at www. sunrisefl.gov. You can also go to www.watersmartbroward.org to find additional water safety tips and swimming lesson providers throughout Broward County. Finally, please remember that while lessons and instruction are a great start, there is no substitute for active adult supervision, especially for children four years old and under. Change Is on the Way By Evan Baron

n 2013, the Florida Legislature over -

whelmingly passed an Alimony Reform Bill. The main focus of the bill was to do away with Permanent Alimony in the State of Florida. Permanent Alimony is presumed when there is a long term marriage, which is defined in Florida Statutes as 17 years or more. Permanent Alimony continues until the death of either spouse or the re-marriage of the spouse receiving alimony. The bill that was sent to the Governor in 2013 would have resulted in the elimination of this form of alimony. It also contained a clause which would have made it retroactive and, as such, individuals who were previously ordered to pay permanent alimony could seek a modification based solely on the change in the law. At the very last minute, Governor Scott vetoed the bill and it never became law. A new Alimony Reform Bill has been presented to the legislature and it appears that this will be approved by both the legislature and the Governor and become law on October 1, 2015. It is not identical to the prior bill, but its main focus remains the same - to eliminate Permanent Alimony. This bill was just introduced and it is anticipated that there will be debate and changes made before it becomes law. Some of the main issues it addresses include: ▸▸ Once again, Permanent Alimony will be eliminated. Alimony will be based upon a number of factors including the respective income of both parties and the number of years of marriage. The new law, if passed, will now use a mathematical formula to determine the length and amount of alimony. This will assist judges and attorneys in determining what alimony award will in fact be proper. At the present time, no guidelines exist and as such awards can deviate from judge to judge. ▸▸ Retirement can be used as a basis for a modification. It appears that the age of retirement will be either the age when an individual can receive fill social security benefits or the age of retirement which is standard in an individual’s profession. ▸▸ The fact that the paying spouse receives an increase in pay does not appear to be grounds for an increase in alimony, unless at the time the alimony award the paying spouse was underemployed. ▸▸ Income from a new spouse of the paying spouse cannot be considered. ▸▸ An individual who either unreasonably brings or defends a modification action shall be responsible for the other parties’ attorney’s fees. ▸▸ The most substantial change from the previous bill concerns the possible retroactive application of this new law. This bill clearly states that the passage of this new law alone will not be grounds for a modification. This means that individuals who have previously been ordered or agreed to pay permanent alimony cannot seek a modification just because we may have a new law. It is expected that this proposal will go through many changes before the final bill is sent to the Governor for his signature. I will continue to keep you updated as this bill proceeds through the legislature. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. The World’s Favorite Newspaper™

Heather Bartley and her family vacationed out west during the holiday break. They wanted to bring a little piece of home, so Our City Sunrise traveled with them to San Diego as well as to the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Bella”

Bella is a 5 year old rescue dog. This sweet little girl is part Pug and part Chihuahua. She seems to be a Mommy’s girl since her favorite is the “Lady of the House”. But, her daddy comes in as a close second. She has a toy box filled with goodies and she plays with all of them all day long like a toddler. She loves treats and dislikes loud neighbors and a fellow Chihuahua. Her favorite hobby besides playing with her toys, is staring at her owners. She was last seen watching television with her family.
