to believe that the school year is quickly coming to an end. It’s no coincidence that the last full month of school is Teacher Appreciation Month. It’s the time to thank those special individuals who have had a positive impact on your children. Before that final bell rings, be sure to finalize your summer camp plans. The Our City Media Camp Guide, available on our website, is a great resource to see all of the programs available in your area. Spring is the time for new growth, and our family of local community news publications is no exception. My staff and I are thrilled to introduce Our City Hollywood & Hallandale, reaching an additional 20,000 readers in these beautiful coastal communities. Our seven free monthly magazines now provide engaging and informative articles covering community and school news, as well as providing expert advice columns and business profiles to 140,000 homes and businesses stretching from the Dade County line all the way to Sunrise. Finally, let us not forget that May is the time we celebrate Mother’s Day. Please take a little pause to honor your mother (and your wife) for these loving ladies are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us and pamper us. Let’s pamper them for a change!

Walk This Way – In My Sneakers Run/Walk Raises $30,000 By Beverly Perkins
M
ore than 400 people gathered at
Huizenga Plaza in Ft. Lauderdale for the second annual “In My Sneakers 5K Run/Walk” last month raising $30,000 that will support the newly opened JAFCO, Children’s Ability Center in Sunrise. Sharon Wender and Craig Konhauzer chaired the event to honor the devoted families in the community who are raising developmentally disabled children. This center is the first one nationwide to offer family support, therapy, child enrichment and respite care all under one roof for children up to age 22 with any developmental disabilities. It also has enhanced case management; day/weekend and extended respite care; social skills, life skills series which includes culinary, office and leisure training, physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as behavioral services. Children begin individualized programs that focus on their strengths and abilities while working to develop their cognitive, verbal, fine
and gross motor and social skills. Parents and family members receive training and information to better understand and manage their child’s diagnosis. Children diagnosed with all different types of developmental disabilities such as autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and Prader-Willi syndrome have been able to take advantage of the warm and inviting center. The facility is dedicated to maintaining a life skills environment by providing an art studio, fun and fitness gym, computer lab, music and drama studio, organic garden and a general store where children can learn gardening, shopping, cooking socializing amongst other important proficiencies. “At JAFCO, we are inspired by the strength and love of parents who are raising children with disabilities,” said Linda Sachs, JAFCO Community Outreach and Parent Support Specialist. Stefanie Falk happens to be one of these parents, and she and her family led
the walk this year with their son Jacob. Jacob was diagnosed with an intellectual disability in the second grade. His parents, like many others, are thrilled to have access to this center so he and many other children can get the therapy they need. As the African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child”. JAFCO certainly understands that, and having this 43,000 square-foot resource right in our “backyard” has enabled so many to have access to services and support that they otherwise wouldn’t have. JAFCO (Jewish Adoption & Family Care Options) is a 501( c ) 3 nonprofit organization established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. For more information on how you can help, contact Gail Marlow, JAFCO Director of Development, at (954)315-8698.

Always Remembering Daniel – Daniel’s Dash For Concussion Awareness 5k Run/Walk By Beverly Perkins
M
arkham Park hosted the 4th annual “Daniel’s Dash For Concussion Awareness 5k Run/Walk” in March to honor Daniel Brett, an active and vibrant young man, who had a love for football and an undiagnosed concussion which ended tragically. Daniel’s family started the Daniel Brett Foundation to continue his legacy by educating and helping others understand the importance of safety in sports all while raising concussion awareness and funds to sponsor SLICE (Sports Legacy Institute Community Educators) interactive educational programs which teach about concussions through discussions. The Daniel Brett Foundation has three focus areas: ▸▸ The first is ImPACT™ testing for every youth athlete. This is the first and most scientificallyvalidated neurocognitive assessment. It is able to monitor athletes before, during and after an injury and provides a baseline for comparison post-injury. ▸▸ The second focus area is educating officials, administrators, athletic coaches, athletes and parents about the nature and risk of concussions through on-going training and guidelines. ▸▸ The third area is ensuring cognitive assessments for student athletes post-injury which include follow-up visits from physicians trained in the evaluation and management of concussions by implementing school board policies and protocols. All too often, we hear about football players getting pulled from games from possible concussions and then put back in the game. Unfortunately, this is what happened to Daniel. No one realized that he suffered numerous asymptomatic sub concussive hits to the head while playing football and then always returning to play. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury which alters the way your brain functions. Sometimes the effects are temporary, but can cause issues such as headaches, problems concentrating, lack of memory, judgment, balance and coordination. They are typically caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, but can also be caused by a hit to the body of an athlete. This injury may include a loss of consciousness, but most result in an alteration of consciousness. No matter what, the brain is injured and needs the proper attention and treatment to heal correctly. Recent studies have shown that concussions, especially multiple “small” ones associated with youth athletes are often undiagnosed since they do not show up on MRIs, MRAs or CT scans. However, they show up in forms of memory loss, problems thinking, reasoning issues to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, loss of impulse control and inability to make reasonable and value judgments. Sadly, this is what happened to Daniel Brett and his family wants everyone to learn from their tragedy.
Donate to The Daniel Brett Foundation at danielsdash.org or contact dianabrett@ danielsdash.org for more information on how you can volunteer or support concussion awareness.

Many Head and Neck Cancers Are Preventable, Treatable Cancers of the head and neck are a major health problem, with human papilloma virus associated head and neck cancers reaching epidemic proportions. More than 400,000 John Greskovich Jr., MD patients are Cleveland Clinic Florida diagnosed with Radiation Oncologist cancer of the tongue and tonsils worldwide each year. These types of cancers can affect a number of body parts, including oral
or nasal cavities, the sinuses, voice box, throat, salivary glands, lymph nodes, tonsils and tongue. The good news is that most head and neck cancers are very preventable, as a high percentage is tied to tobacco use. You can reduce your risk by not using tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco. Alcohol use is also a contributing factor, so it is important to consume in moderation. Over recent years there has been a growing number in cases of tongue and tonsil cancer
World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.
associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV). Therefore, we recommend vaccinating boys and girls, typically between the ages of 9 and 14, with the HPV vaccine. Vaccination to protect against HPV infection involves a series of three shots. Symptoms Patients who should be evaluated for head and neck cancers include those who have the following symptoms, especially if present for a week or two: • hoarseness • ear pain • sore throat • difficulty swallowing foods • sores in the mouth • sudden onset of dentures not fitting • foul-smelling breath Treatment Options If you are diagnosed with a head or neck cancer, it is important to get opinions from a head and neck surgeon, a radiation oncologist, as well as a medical oncologist, who specialize in treatments for head and neck cancer. For certain cancers, surgery might be the best treatment, but for others, radiation with or without chemotherapy is better. The collaborative model of medicine practiced at Cleveland Clinic Florida, allows patients the opportunity to be seen by all necessary specialists on the same day, in one location. Physicians work as a team to develop an individualized treatment plan with the best course of action for you. For local-regionally advanced, HPVassociated tonsil or tongue cancer, Cleveland Clinic has reported cure rates in the 90 percent range. Cure rates for other head and neck tumors depend on the site and stage of the disease.

Sawgrass Elementary Gives a Hoot About Autism By Beverly Perkins
A
pril is “Autism Awareness” month across the nation , but Sawgrass Elementary lights it up blue every day with their incredible autism program. They provide an environment filled with a loving and nurturing staff along with the many resources necessary to help their students on the spectrum learn and achieve like all other mainstream students. Organizations such as “Autism Speaks” suggest that “from birth to at least 36 months of age, every child should be screened for developmental milestones during routine well visits. When such a screening—or a parent—raises concerns about a child’s development, the doctor should refer the child to a specialist in developmental evaluation and early intervention.” These important facts are the reason awareness is so crucial: ▸▸ Autism now affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys. ▸▸ Autism prevalence figures are growing. ▸▸ Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the U.S. ▸▸ Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average. ▸▸ Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism. ▸▸ There is no medical detection or cure for autism. With statistics like these, it is a privilege that Broward County has a program available at Sawgrass Elementary. There are approximately 30 students in the program from Pre-K - 5th grades under the supervision of 5 dedicated teachers and Autism Coach, Senovia Morrison. Ms. Morrison lives by Temple Grandin’s quote, “The focus should be teaching people with autism to adapt to the social world around them, while still retaining
14

the essence of who they are, including their autism.” This belief is why their program is exceptional. Two of the classrooms are specialized for intensive children with severe behavior issues and/or developmental delays while the other three teach on each student’s individual levels. They also assist in the transition to mainstream classrooms. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sawgrass Elementary has a “Lunch Bunch” group in which 2 Autistic children are placed with 2 mainstream students where they are given a conversation box with various topics. The goal is to have them develop social and listening skills while making new friends. For many, this is a highlight they look forward to having each week. 3-5th grade teacher, Delana Atkins LaHue, has spent 32 years teaching ESE students ages 3-21 with all kinds of disabilities. “Disability in my books equals superior ability in other areas, many of which, cannot be measured in any standardized test.” states LaHue. For the past 10 years, she has taught children with Autism and they have taught her just the same. She says, “They and the many ESE children I loved before them, have taught me the true value of patience, humility, acceptance, humor, frankness, honesty and love.” April 2nd marked the eighth annual “World Autism Awareness Day” and to celebrate the entire school wore blue and participated in a variety of special activities. The students in the program started their day by making a special appearance on “Good Morning Sawgrass” with Principal Roberts. From being news anchors to making blue hand prints and then sidewalk chalk creations, their day was certainly a fun celebration of awareness.

Village Elementary Students Are On The Job By Beverly Perkins
V
illage E lementary students had the opportunity to visit Sunrise Police and Fire Departments as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce and expose students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. The program began 24 years ago and today 60 elementary schools, 423 teachers and administrators and more than 400 volunteers from 90 South Florida businesses participate serving 6,000+ students. Sixty percent of which are minorities who qualify for free or reduced lunch. This type of learning is crucial for the youth of today to be successful in life. Throughout the year students are taught work place ethics, career choices, team building, leadership skills and communication. The curriculum presented consists of eight lessons, each of which feature a work-related concept. The lessons are age appropriate, interactive and of course, educational. Making children aware of work in the real world can be structured into every aspect of a student’s life without them even realizing it. Suggestions are also made in each lesson connecting career themes to other subject areas which

allow teachers to reinforce them in a cross curriculum. Village Elementary has been lucky enough to have this partnership for 7 years. This time the 5th graders got to see how the Sunrise Police and Fire Departments operate. The students were able to try on S.W.A.T. gear, explore emergency vehicles, slide down the fire pole and try their hand out at spraying the fire hose. There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment. However, along with learning there still is fun. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success, in school, work, and life.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@ gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

Making the Grade – Piper High Outstanding Senior Leaders By Beverly Perkins
E
very high school curriculum in every school district across
the United States gives students the opportunity to practice leadership skills. FBLA, HOSA and DECA are a few examples of courses taught to develop these valuable skills necessary to be successful. A school’s district must provide ample activities outside the classroom to show their commitment to student leadership development. Fortunately, The School Board of Broward County leads the state and the nation. Piper High School has announced their outstanding seniors and we’re happy to report that they certainly earned high marks not only on tests and papers, but as community leaders and as individuals. They have bright futures ahead of them and deserve to be recognized. Get to know them and see what fellow students, teachers and administrators have to say about them. Ashley Ann Paredes (Class Rank: 39/531 – Volunteer Service Hours: 267). Ashley is Student Government secretary, National Honor Society secretary and active member of Year Book. Her honors include: Principal’s Honor Roll, Top 10% and Most Improved-track. Mayor’s Message
Sunrise Wants You To Be Safe This Summer By Michael Ryan, Mayor of Sunrise
A
s summer approaches , our attention
often turns to water safety, particularly for young children. The City of Sunrise wants to help keep all of our children safe through water safety initiatives and programs. Sadly, Florida loses more children to drowning than any other state in the nation – a staggering 73 fatalities in 2014, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). In Broward County alone, nine child drowning deaths were reported last year, and six of those drowning victims were under the age of 4. While these statistics are frightening, it is important to recognize drowning deaths are preventable. We’re proud to be at the forefront of #SaferBy4, a county-wide campaign designed to help children reach their fourth birthdays through both water safety initiatives and development of safe sleep habits for young children and families. As a #SaferBy4 community, Sunrise is committed to sharing safety information that will help save young lives. When you and your family spend time near the water, be sure to keep these drowningprevention tips from DCF in mind:

Supervision. Someone should always be actively watching children when they are in the pool. Drowning can happen in just a few minutes. Designate a “Water Watcher” to keep an eye on swimmers. Barriers. A child should never be able to enter the pool area unaccompanied by an adult. Barriers physically block a child from the pool, and are required by Florida law for home pools. Barriers include: child-proof locks on all doors, a pool fence with self-latching and self-closing gates, as well as door and pool alarms. Swimming Lessons. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children age 4 and older learn to swim in order to help prevent drowning. It also encourages caregivers of children age 1 to 3 to consider swim instruction for their child, as studies have shown it reduces drowning incidents. Caregivers should learn to swim as well. The City of Sunrise is here to help. Sunrise residents should call (954) 747-4600 for information on free and low-cost children’s swimming lessons. Emergency Preparedness. The moment a child stops breathing there is a small, precious window of time in which resuscitation may occur. CPR techniques are easy to learn and can mean the difference between life and death. It’s also important to have a phone to call 911. To register for a CPR certification course in Sunrise, visit www.redcross.org/takeaclass. Have a safe month! Mayor Michael J. Ryan

Storm Preparation: Plan Ahead to Keep Your Family and Home Safe! By Thomas Dibernardo, Sunrise Fire Chief
H
urricane season runs from J une 1 st
through November 30th. With over 1,200 miles of coastline, Florida is exposed to more hurricanes and tropical storms than any other state in the US, making preparation critical for residents. For this reason, Sunrise Fire Rescue’s Emergency Management Division has taken pro-active measures to reduce the risk these storms pose to the City. These enhanced precautions led to Sunrise being certified as a “StormReady” community by the National Weather Service, having met the following preparedness criteria :
▸▸ A 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center. ▸▸ Multiple layers to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public. ▸▸ A system for monitoring local weather conditions . ▸▸ Promoting readiness through community education . ▸▸ Training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises. ▸▸ A formal hazardous weather plan.

Now with hurricane season once again rapidly approaching, be sure to have your own emergency plan in place. Here are some basic preparedness tips to keep your household safe throughout the storm season: ▸▸ Determine whether you live in an evacuation zone. Evacuation zones, routes, and shelter options can be found at www.broward.org/hurricane. Discuss with your family where you will go if an evacuation order is given. Be sure to plan for any family members with special needs, and for the care of pets in your home. ▸▸ Notify family and friends of your plan, and establish an out-of-area contact who can coordinate family members’ locations and information, should you become separated. ▸▸ Make sure children know the emergency plans and family contact information ▸▸ Inventory your home possessions and videotape, record or photograph items of value. Review your home and vehicle insurance policies to ensure you have adequate coverage before storm season starts. ▸▸ Assess and secure your home’s vulnerable areas. ▸▸ Determine your family’s food, water and medical needs for a 3-5 day period, and assemble your hurricane kit according to those needs. A supply list can be found at www.broward.org/hurricane. For more information, please visit the Hurricane Preparedness page on the City of Sunrise website, www.sunrisefl.gov. For ongoing safety information, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise FireRescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

Send Love
Invisalign for Adults and Teens By Dr. Michael Maruri
H

Code VTBCUB
aving straight teeth is important not
only for children, but for adults as well. As we grow older, many things change and the mouth is no exception. In a nutshell, the lips relax and lose muscle tone, while the muscles of the tongue recede and reduce the support they provide to our bottom front teeth. As a result, even if you have had orthodontic treatment in the past, our teeth tend to grow inward, creating crowding – a common problem for many adults. Thus, it may be difficult to keep teeth clean and healthy. Straightening your teeth with the Invisalign system can treat the crowding, and thereby help maintain your dental health. It can also help you get the smile you’ve always wanted! Invisalign is comfortable, affordable and effective. Go wireless with Invisalign! If the idea of wearing braces bothers you as much as a crooked smile, you’ll love Invisalign. Invisalign delivers the straight, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted without the hassle and look of regular braces. Patients wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position. With Invisalign, you can: ▸▸ Eat whatever you want.
For your FREE Cub, use code VTBCUB www.VermontTeddyBear.com/mday or call 1-800-929-1703 *FREE Cub (regularly $29.99) with purchase of Mother Bear and code VTBCUB. Offer valid through 5/31/15. Redeemable at www.VermontTeddyBear.com/mday and via phone by calling 1-800-929-1703. Code is not valid on previous orders. Only one promotional code may be used per order.
▸▸ Smile complimentarily, knowing that no one can tell you’re using orthodontics. ▸▸ Brush and floss like usual. ▸▸ Enjoy the smooth feel of the plastic aligners. After your treatment is complete, you will have a brighter, more attractive smile. People will know that something is different, but they will not know that you had orthodontics work done!
Make Mom Feel Like a Queen …For more than a day
FREE
Gift Packaging & Personalized Card! Extra thoughtful. No hassle.
How is Invisalign Teen different? Invisalign Teen is the same as Invisalign adult except in three ways:
▸▸ Invisalign Teen has small blue dots on each aligner which fade after about two weeks of wear to improve compliance of the teens. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen can be done on teenagers who may have some baby or deciduous teeth present. There are spaces left in the aligners for when the adult teeth erupt through. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen allows parents to order replacement aligners for when their child may lose an aligner.
How is Invisalign Performed?
First, Dr. Maruri will take pictures, X-rays and impressions of your teeth. Then, using sophisticated computer technology, the Invisalign lab will use these to create a 3-D image of your teeth. Dr. Maruri will use these to map out every step of your treatment plan. He will even show you what to expect during each stage.

Legally Speaking
May I Relocate? By Evan Baron
R
Pest Control & Termite Professionals Home · Business · Commercial
elocation involves a parent who
wishes to move out of this jurisdiction with his/ her minor children. This issue can surface during a divorce or after a divorce has been finalized. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home,” where they may have emotional and perhaps financial support. Sometimes a family relocates to South Florida due to a job transfer or a better career opportunity. It may require the couple to move away from the comfort of their home and the security of their family. The problems that a desire to relocate creates cannot usually be resolved by a simple agreement. As an example, mom wants to move back to Massachusetts with the parties’ two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps.”

The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This, of course, can cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. This is especially true if the parents are following a 50/50 time sharing schedule. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however, allow for relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children against the effect it will have on the parent/child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule. Family court judges will often express the fact that these types of cases are the most difficult to decide. If you are faced with a possible relocation issue, I suggest you contact my office and schedule a free consultation. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

“Sandy” Sandy is a 4 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. Her favorite person is her daddy, but she also loves to visit grandma’s house. Sandy loves to play and currently her favorite toy is a squeaky stuffed carrot. Sandy’s likes include peanut butter, swimming, and going to the dog park. She really dislikes rainy days. Her favorite thing to do is run - she’s very fast! Sandy was last seen napping after playing with her friends at the park.
