It’s Vacation Time

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s summertime already. It seems like just yesterday we were shopping for school supplies and back-to-school outfits, and now the kids are finishing their last few days of school. Where does the time go? Before summer slips by, seriously think about your summer activities and vacations. Whether you choose to stay close to home and enjoy quick trips to the Keys, marvel at the magic of Orlando, take a family road trip, or fly off to faraway destinations, this is the time when

A Hashtag That Saves Lives - #SaferBy4 By Beverly Perkins

T

Community News

he Florida Department of Children and Families’ new campaign, #SaferBy4, is continuously being promoted just in time for summer. Many communities in Broward County are being extremely supportive of this public awareness campaign which launched earlier this year. The goal of this initiative is to reduce preventable childhood deaths by giving cities, first responders and others who interact with families the additional tools and cost-free ways of providing important safety information to their cities and their residents to ensure children reach their fourth birthday safely. Last year, Broward County alone had 40 infant/toddler deaths. According to DCF (Department of Children & Families), nearly half of children who died in Broward County in 2014 lost their lives before their fourth birthdays because of drowning or unsafe sleep practices. #SaferBy4 is a collaborative effort between parents, caretakers, families, community leaders and officials. Across the county, drownings of toddler twins were reported twice; once in Deerfield and then again in Sunrise. Tragic stories such as these have multiple cities’ attention and public officials want to do what they can in effort to protect young children and become #SaferBy4 cities. Many leaders throughout Broward County

have already taken the #SaferBy4 pledge and committed their cities to participate. Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan has been a strong supporter of the campaign from the very beginning. He presented a proclamation to DCF in January. The city of Sunrise has also taken an additional step of issuing resolutions in support of the #SaferBy4 campaign. Every possible step can make a difference. “Our hope today is we will all begin working together with hashtag ‘Safer by 4’ initiative and build best practices to save lives each day every year,” said Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan. Educating the public on such a large platform is crucial to prevent these unnecessary tragedies. Many municipalities are also using social media to promote #SaferBy4 within their communities. With the summer heat approaching, it’s important to get the proper tools and implement and review them for the health, safety and well-being of children while they play in and near the water. For more information about preventable child fatalities, visit www.dcf.state.fl.us/ childfatality- For other information about how to become a #SaferBy4 community contact (954)331-3499- For any prevention- related activity please use #saferby4 to tweet, post on Facebook, Instagram or any other social media your city may use.

Special Needs Group Gives Sunrise Resident A Brand New Set of Wheels Community News

By Beverly Perkins

I

t was a great day for 33 year old Sunrise resident and ARC client, Kerlene Petit-Homme when she received a surprise from Special Needs Group President and CEO Andrew J. Garnett at the ARC Broward’s Sunrise location. This incredible surprise was a Pride Mobility Jazzy Select® 6 power chair. Kerlene, a spirited, talented and very determined individual, has been using a wheelchair since 2009 and has been trying to raise funds by selling her own artwork for $5 so she could purchase an electric wheelchair. Her ultimate goal was to improve her self-esteem and exemplify the ARC Broward mantra of “Enriching My Life”. ARC Broward is a nationally accredited not-for-profit organization which provides services to adults and children with autism, Down syndrome, developmental disabilities and other various life challenges. The Special Needs Group heard Petit-Homme’s story and decided to make her dream a reality. She had no idea that trading a few pieces of her artwork with SNG President and CEO Andrew Garnett would change her life. Special Needs Group, Inc. is the leading global provider of wheelchair rentals, scooter rentals and other special needs equipment rentals. They are also the travel industries only special needs travel solution and the only approved source to deliver to all cruise lines.

“We are very honored to have the opportunity to help Kerlene achieve her dreams of a more active lifestyle,” said Garnett. “As soon as we heard her story, we knew we could help create a fairytale ending for her. It is our mission to deliver an accessible world to everyone, regardless of their limitations.” This very generous donation retails at $5,725 which translates to 1,145 drawings. Ms. Petit-Homme can now continue her job as a computer data entry clerk and enjoy her role as the president of the Client Advocacy Team at ARC Broward and spend her time creating art with the children at the ARC Broward’s preschool without having to sell any. She looks forward to visiting the mall with her group home members where she will now be able to keep up with them on her very own Pride Mobility Jazzy Select®.

A Taste of Success – Delish 2015 By Beverly Perkins

A

RC Broward, a not-for-profit human services organization dedicated to providing services to children and adults with developmental disabilities and various life challenges, hosted its fourth-annual fundraising event, Delish 2015, which was presented by PNC Bank. This sold out culinary extravaganza was held on April 17th at the Young at Art Museum. Touché Executive Chef and Top Chef star Carla Pellegrino served as honorary chair, and CBS Miami’s “Taste of the Town” host Lisa Petrillo served as emcee of this year’s event which celebrated the success of the ARC Broward Culinary Institute. More than 500 guests enjoyed an evening of fun and food all while benefiting a great cause. Along with viewing the Young at Art Museum art collections, attendees were treated to gourmet delights, refreshing cocktails, dancing, a silent auction and so much more. A panel of esteemed food bloggers joined Pellegrino and Petrillo where they judged different cooking stations which showcased the culinary creations of local chefs paired with ARC Broward’s graduates. Attendees also had the opportunity to select the winning dish by casting their votes via their mobile devices. This year’s Delish theme, “Broward vs Miami-

Dade,” featured a faceoff between chefs competing for “Most Delish County.” All proceeds from the event will support critically-needed services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and those with various other life challenges. Event co-chairs included: Steve Fuino of PNC Bank, Tanya L. Bower of Tripp Scott, and Heather Geronemus of Ultimate Software. The winning chefs included: Chef Adrienne Grenier of 3030 Ocean for “Best Overall,” Chef Nuno Grullon of R House Wynwood for “Fan Favorite,” Chef Philip Darmon of Hardy Park Bistro for “Critic’s Choice,” and Broward was voted “Most Delish County,” which included: Chef Adrienne Grenier of 3030 Ocean, Chef Philip Darmon of Hardy Park Bistro, Chef Tom Azar of Lauderdale Yacht Club and Chef Andres Marin of the ARC Broward Culinary Institute. ARC Broward’s Student Chef of the Year award was presented to ARC Broward graduate, Brandon Letourneau for his passion for the culinary arts, perseverance and excellent performance he displayed while completing ARC Broward’s Entry Level Culinary Arts Certificate Program over the past year. The ARC Broward Culinary Institute offers a food service training certificate program for individuals with developmental disabilities and those with other life challenges. The ARC Broward Culinary Institute also includes a nonprofit catering service for students to obtain real world on-the-job training. Revenues generated from the catering services directly support job training, placement and student scholarships.

Many Options Available to Treat Heart Failure Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, either because one side has gotten too weak or the Viviana Navas, MD heart has become Cleveland Clinic Florida too stiff. Nearly 5 Cardiologist million Americans are diagnosed with heart failure each year. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over age 65. Heart failure can have many causes, including coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeats,

high blood pressure, certain viruses, excessive alcohol or drug use, and past treatment with chemotherapy. In some patients, the cause of the heart’s worsening performance is not known.

Symptoms of heart failure The most common early symptom of heart failure is that patients feel short of breath after only a little physical activity. Some also feel short of breath when they lay down, and may find it is more comfortable to sleep propped up with several pillows. Swelling in the legs, fatigue, weight gain and gastrointestinal problems can also be early signs of heart failure.

The #1 name in heart care. Without skipping a beat. From routine care to complex heart transplants, Cleveland Clinic Florida consistently delivers world class care at every level.

If your doctor suspects you have heart failure, he or she will conduct a complete physical and review your medical history to see if any past conditions could have damaged your heart muscle. The primary test used to diagnose heart failure is an echocardiogram. This will give the doctor a clear picture of your heart’s health. Other tests that can be useful include blood work, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, stress test and angiogram.

Treating heart failure Many types of heart failure can be fixed with fairly routine procedures, such as ones to correct irregular rhythms or open a blocked artery. If none of these are appropriate, medications such as beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and aldosterone antagonists can help improve the heart’s ability to pump blood, slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow and prevent fluid retention. Patients also are advised on lifestyle changes they can make to improve their heart health, such as eating better and exercising. For patients whose heart failure is more severe and cannot be managed with medications or other approaches, Cleveland Clinic Florida began a program last year to transplant donor hearts and implant mechanical devices. When a heart failure patient’s condition is worsening, a team of experts including cardiologists, surgeons, pharmacists, nutritionists and social workers, meets to review the best treatment options. If a heart transplant is indicated, the patient is put on the donor list to find a match. If a mechanical device to assist the heart is decided to be the best course of action, surgery to implant it typically can occur within a few days.

Although patients who undergo heart or device implantation are hospitalized for 1 to 2 weeks and need to come back for frequent follow up visits, most can resume a fairly normal life within about a month. They tend to report feeling much stronger and healthier, and often have few long-term limitations on their daily life.

andpiper Elementary fourth grade students had a wonderful opportunity to work with the Sunrise Leadership Academy to create a unique and creative guide to the city of Sunrise. This learning project encompassed educational components necessary to help boost FCAT writing skills and other skills such as economic development, reporting and marketing. At the same time, it exposed the students to a variety of businesses and future job opportunities. The Kids’ Guide to Sunrise is a student-written guidebook spotlighting local destinations and dining options that these fourth graders love most. It was a collaboration with the Sunrise Leadership Academy (SLA) Class of 2015. In years past, the SLA has been doing collaborative service-learning projects such as “Little Free Libraries” and a “Fun, Food and Fitness Day”. The SLA, founded in 2009, is a hands-on civic engagement program for local teens. Student leaders from Piper, Plantation, Western, and Nova high schools are nominated by their teachers and administrators for participation in the awardwinning program. Each academic year brings in a new group of students with new ideas and experiences. The City’s goal is to empower these students to become inspired young adults while encouraging them to give back to the community and follow their dreams. Sandpiper Elementary School Principal Camille LaChance rallied behind the project, and the school’s fourth grade teaching team: Ms. Lorna Edwards, Mr. Cory Adler, Ms. Barrie Avitan, Ms. Heather Emery and Ms. Betty Sebaste contributed their time and expertise. Christiana Lily of the Society of Professional Journalists, South Florida Pro Chapter, helped brainstorm the book’s format. Graduate students from Florida International University’s Creative Writing

MFA program; Ashley M. Jones, Ellene Moore, and Laurel Nakanishi provided invaluable support, mentoring the SLA students and helping to oversee creative writing sessions at Sandpiper. Volunteers from the Orange Island Arts Foundation; Laura McDermott, Jan Becker and Sarah Pearsall also contributed their creative talents. Interviewees for the guidebook’s “Sunrise VIPs” section included Deputy Mayor Donald K. Rosen, Candy Cottage owner Sherri Price, Assistant Utilities Director Gio Batista, and Leisure Services Division Director Kevin Pickard. The Sunrise Utilities Department, Sam’s Club, and Fanatics Authentic hosted field trips and Metropica underwrote the bus transportation. The project was inspired by a lesson plan developed by a non-profit creative writing and tutoring network, 826 National. It was called, “I Wrote a Guidebook and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt”. Sandpiper Elementary students didn’t just get special t-shirts, they also received published copies of their hard work and talent and the SLA gave them a Publication Celebration party with Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan. The Mayor congratulated the students and the fourth graders read their guidebook entries aloud and even signed autographs. Another special surprise was a special Q & A Skype call from children’s author/illustrator Elisabeth Dahl. Copies of the Kids’ Guide to Sunrise are available at Sunrise City Hall - 10770 W Oakland Park Blvd, Sunrise. For more information call 954-747-4662. The Bilingual Literacy Program Earns High Marks at Sawgrass Elementary

School News

By Beverly Perkins

ue to the initiative of Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan, Sawgrass Elementary was the first school in Broward County to obtain an innovative program for “Dual Language” classrooms which continues to grow each year. Currently, there are three of these dual language classrooms in this “A” rated school. These are full immersion, not bilingual, classrooms. Therefore, instruction is done one day entirely in English and the next day in Spanish. Students in these classrooms are fully immersed in both languages resulting in proficient English and Spanish speakers. The goal of this program is to start preparing students for college and the real world. “By providing our students this opportunity to speak multiple languages, they will be ready to compete in our global economy,” states Assistant Principal Marlen Veliz. The Bilingual Literacy program was designed by Pat Mora, a Texas native and acclaimed children’s author. In 1996, she was listening to a public radio show about the Mexican tradition, Dia del Nino, or the Day of The Child. This annual celebration in Mexico recognizes children and their importance to society and endorses their well-being. Mora then began thinking that promoting literacy went hand in hand with supporting the welfare of children. On April 30, 1997, El Dia de Los Ninos/El Dia de Los Libros (The Day of The Child and The Day of The Books) was born. Both the governor of New Mexico and the mayor of Santa Fe issued proclamations marking the event and reiterating the founding principles. These principles call for a daily commitment of: ▸▸ honoring children and childhood ▸▸ promoting literacy and the importance of linking all children to books, languages, and cultures ▸▸ honoring home languages and cultures, and thus promoting bilingual and multilingual literacy in this multicultural nation, and global understanding through reading ▸▸ involving parents as valued members of the literacy team ▸▸ promoting library collection development that reflects our plurality This annual national event and celebration at Sawgrass Elementary is supported each year by school board member, District 6 Chair, Laurie Rich-Levinson. Since reading is the primary focus to promote literacy, Ms. Delombard’s first grade Dual Language classroom was honored to have Ms. RichLevinson read to them. Other readers were members of the B.U.D.S. program (Brothers, Uncles and Dads). These male mentors are positive role models who invest their time in the students’ education. This year over 200 bilingual “Panthers” participated by performing skits, singing songs and reading in multiple languages to their peers.

FAN-tastic Family Picnic to honor Autism Awareness Community News

By Beverly Perkins

16

O

n Sunday, April 19th, the Family Autism Network (FAN), hosted a family picnic at Markham Park in the Heron Preserve. FAN is a non-profit organization which advocates the improvement of lives of people with autism and their families by raising awareness and acceptance, promoting educational programs and self-advocacy, creating social activities and fostering important life skills. “I have a nine year old boy with autism and through my involvement in the community, I have met a very special group of people and together we created this grassroots organization,” states Kelly Busch, board member and one of FAN creators. Their goal is to continually raise acceptance and awareness year round, not just during national Autism Awareness month in April. The organization, Autism Speaks cites that these important facts are the reason why awareness is so crucial: ▸▸ Autism now affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys. ▸▸ Autism prevalence figures are growing. ▸▸ Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the U.S. ▸▸ Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average. ▸▸ Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism. ▸▸ There is no medical detection or cure for autism. The Family Autism Network prides themselves on supporting those who have children and other family members on the spectrum. In addition to providing com-

fort, guidance and education, they host monthly events for these families to gather and socialize. These gatherings can be a picnic in the park such as this particular one, a fun day at Jump Zone in Sunrise, a sensory friendly movie screening, a visit to the library or even a day with the Miami Dolphins. All FAN families were invited to bring their friends and their picnic baskets to April’s event. It was a perfect opportunity to meet new friends while having some fun with some local city officials. Sunrise Fire and Rescue had trucks on hand for the children to get up close and see how they operate. Behavioral Athletic Therapy (BAT) of Sunrise, came out to play sports and games. Other activities were arts and crafts, music and seed planting in honor of Earth Day. In addition to the light snacks provided, Hot Dog Hound, Three Scoops Ice Cream and Nacho Bizness food trucks attended with their tasty treats. Sponsors for this event were Andra’s Hand, Artists with Autism, Autism Notebook Magazine, BAT-Behavioral and Athletic Therapy, Brothers Farmers Market, Costco Wholesale, JAFCO, Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, Party Game Time, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Puzzle Peace Now and Spectrum Therapy. These businesses and organizations are supporters of families with autism and their generosity is always appreciated. Inspiring Individual

Young At Heart – Sunrise Resident, Loretta Young, Inducted Into The 2015 Broward Senior Hall of Fame By Beverly Perkins

T

en Broward County Seniors were honored at the 32nd Annual Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast, which took place last month at the Woodlands Country Club in Tamarac during “Older American Month”. The event was presented by The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County and sponsored by the Area wide Council on Aging of Broward County and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Sunrise Lakes resident, Loretta Young, was one of these honorees. Loretta Young has distinguished herself as a selfless and passionate individual by volunteering for many organizations and many venues for Broward County Veterans for many years. As a veteran herself, she understands what they need and goes above and beyond to help all those she can. Ms. Young served one Active duty tour in the United States Air Force (USAF) during the Vietnam War era. She was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California and ended her service career at Miami International Airport. After her discharge from the Air Force in 1961, Loretta worked for American Airlines for 31 years. Since her retirement, in 1994, she has held a multitude of volunteer positions including assisting veterans as a liaison for the Air Force Association (AFA). With Impact Broward, Loretta has volunteered as a

veteran mentor by assisting female veterans who have difficulties adjusting to civilian life and have been assigned to the Broward County Veterans Court. Loretta’s volunteer resume has more powerful positions than most people have in a lifetime. She has been the Legion National Assistant Sergeant at Arms, District Commander for the American Legion Post 365 in Sunrise, Vice President for the Veterans United of America (VUA), Legion State Chairman ROTC/Shooting Sports Chair and Vice President for the Broward County JROTC Support. Presently, she serves in her 8th year as a Committee Chair on the Service Academy Appointees Board for Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. In addition to all this, for the past 5 years Loretta has organized veterans from the VA Clinic in Sunrise for the “National Veterans Golden Age Games”. These annual games are played throughout the country and are available for senior veterans over age 55 who receive their healthcare from the VA. She, herself, has won bronze, silver and gold medals. At age 74, Loretta Young is an inspiration for generations to follow. The countless hours she contributes not only with these organizations, but with her daughter, Tanya, son, Tony and her 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren will always keep her young at heart.

Praying Mantis and Tadpoles and Butterflies… Oh My! – Mad Science at Sandpiper Elementary By Beverly Perkins

since they are ultimately teaching each other to learn. Students have a better understanding when witnessing the life cycle first-hand. Naming their classroom guests engage them even further. During this learning process, they have acquired the knowledge to take pride and care of their environment while respecting it. They also have become aware of all the little things around them and the importance of being kind to our planet every day. A favorite activity is the butterfly garden. The students get to be involved and observe the process and progress each and every day. The garden is an ongoing all year project that the entire school gets to enjoy. The main focus this year has been the Monarch butterfly and its’ fight for survival. There is a lack of milkweed without pesticides for these migrating butterflies and the students are trying to help and influence each other to protect them. Therefore, they have been learning the natural way to get rid of garden pests without the harmful use of toxic chemicals. The open campus at Sandpiper Elementary allows for many teachable moments.

rs. Janik’s first graders at Sandpiper Elementary school always have a classroom full of creatures to learn about. This year they have observed mantis hatching, ladybugs emerging and getting spots, tadpoles growing into frogs and caterpillars turning into beautiful butterflies. Janik’s classroom has all the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, but also has a super cool handson science lab. The students get to put on lab coats, look under a microscope and explore a unique variety of species. From raising insects and reptiles to adopting a dolphin and a panda, this is a learning environment that translates from books to real life. Mrs. Janik, also known as “The Animal Lady”, never minds getting her hands dirty and believes that hands-on teaching is the only way to arouse curiosity and learning. “Hands-on science makes it real for children. They develop a vested interest in their little world and it opens the door to the bigger world out there,” says Janik who has been a teacher for 25 years with over 12 years at Sandpiper. These hands-on experiments are done in class year round to reinforce objectives. The children love being able to be an integral part of the education experience

Summer Safety By: Thomas Dibernardo, Sunrise Fire Chief

A

s balmy spring temperatures give way to sizzling summer heat this month, Sunrise Fire-Rescue encourages you to keep your cool with the following safety tips. Hurricane season starts June 1. Now is the time to review your plan and gather necessary supplies well ahead of any potential storms. Hurricane kits should include essentials for all members of your home - including your pets - such as non-perishable food, water, and medical supplies to last three to five days after a storm. A full list of suggested supplies is available on the City of Sunrise website, located under the Fire-Rescue Department of Emergency Management and Hurricane Preparedness, www.sunrisefl.gov. The same summer weather patterns that create hurricanes also are responsible for the frequent thunderstorms we see at this time of year. Florida is the lightning capital of the country, with an average of 30 people being injured and 10 killed each year. If you can hear thunder, immediately seek shelter inside a building or vehicle. Stay away from large trees and open bodies of water. Once indoors, avoid corded phones, computers, sinks, showers, and windows. Storms are not the only concern during this season, hot temperatures can cause heat related medical emergencies such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke if the proper precautions are not taken. It is important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Stay away from beverages with alcohol or caffeine, which can actually dehydrate the body. The American Heart Association cautions that not sweating during vigorous physical activity can be a red flag that you are dehydrated to the point of developing heat exhaustion or worse. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Older adults, small children, and pets are among the most vulnerable to heat injuries. Never leave a child or pet inside a parked vehicle. Even with the windows partially open, temperatures inside can exceed 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more and using sunshades will also help protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays and the painful sting of sunburn. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are a part of sunlight that is an invisible form of radiation; just because it is not sunny does not mean it is safe. Swimming in pools and at the beach is one way to stay cool this summer. Remember pool safety is everyone’s responsibility and you should always practice water safety: never leave a child unattended near any body of water, swim with a buddy, and always provide dedicated adult supervision wherever children are swimming. Water safety tips and resources are available at www.watersmartbroward.org. For on-going safety information, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter@ SunriseFRD.

O

ften residential crime occurs when we are away from home, on a family vacation, or involved in outdoor activities. How can you protect your home and property when you are gone? Remember, your goal is for your home to appear lived in. You want it to look different in the morning than at night. Following our recommendations below will help keep your home safe and secure and give you some peace of mind while you are away. ▸▸ I nform as few people as possible of your vacation plans. This includes newspaper and postal delivery people, unless you are going to be gone an extended period of time. ▸▸ Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you are gone and to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police department. ▸▸ Give emergency telephone or cell phone numbers, your itinerary, and a house key to your trusted neighbor. ▸▸ Ask them to pick up your newspaper, mail, and other deliveries daily. ▸▸ Ask your neighbor to place a filled garbage can in front of your house on collection day. ▸▸ Ask your neighbor to park their vehicle in your driveway occasionally. ▸▸ Arrange to have the lawn mowed. ▸▸ Install dusk-to-dawn (photo cell) or motion sensor lights on all outdoor lights. ▸▸ Use automatic timers on a radio and lamps to simulate occupancy. Set these for your normal routine. For instance, a radio and lamp in the living room might be on from dusk until 10:00 PM then at 10:00 PM a lamp goes on in the bedroom and off at midnight. ▸▸ Don’t post your vacation plans on social networking sites. ▸▸ Lock all outside doors using quality deadbolt locks and shut and lock your windows. ▸▸ Lock your garage door. ▸▸ Store valuables in a safety deposit box. ▸▸ Call your police department and request an extra watch during your absence. Remember: The only way to stop crime is to get involved in crime prevention. Invisalign for Adults and Teens “THE ULTIMATE GIFT STORE”

New York Yankees 27-Time World Series Ticket Collage

section Ask the expert head

By Dr. Michael Maruri

H

aving straight teeth is important not only for children, but for adults as well. As we grow older, many things change and the mouth is no exception. In a nutshell, the lips relax and lose muscle tone, while the muscles of the tongue recede and reduce the support they provide to our bottom front teeth. As a result, even if you have had orthodontic treatment in the past, our teeth tend to grow inward, creating crowding – a common problem for many adults. Thus, it may be difficult to keep teeth clean and healthy. Straightening your teeth with the Invisalign system can treat the crowding, and thereby help maintain your dental health. It can also help you get the smile you’ve always wanted! Invisalign is comfortable, affordable and effective. Go wireless with Invisalign! If the idea of wearing braces bothers you as much as a crooked smile, you’ll love Invisalign. Invisalign delivers the straight, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted without the hassle and look of regular braces. Patients wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position. With Invisalign, you can: ▸▸ Eat whatever you want.

▸▸ Smile complimentarily, knowing that no one can tell you’re using orthodontics. ▸▸ Brush and floss like usual. ▸▸ Enjoy the smooth feel of the plastic aligners. After your treatment is complete, you will have a brighter, more attractive smile. People will know that something is different, but they will not know that you had orthodontics work done!

How is Invisalign Teen different? Invisalign Teen is the same as Invisalign adult except in three ways:

▸▸ Invisalign Teen has small blue dots on each aligner which fade after about two weeks of wear to improve compliance of the teens. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen can be done on teenagers who may have some baby or deciduous teeth present. There are spaces left in the aligners for when the adult teeth erupt through. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen allows parents to order replacement aligners for when their child may lose an aligner.

Pest Control & Termite Professionals

Dissolution and Financial Disclosure

C

lients who are going through a Dissolution of Marriage are often surprised to learn how much personal financial information they must reveal. The laws of this state require complete financial disclosure. Most people get overwhelmed with this requirement, since it can be very time consuming. I’m often asked, “Do I have to produce all of this information. I just don’t have the time!” I reply that it is called Mandatory Financial Disclosure for a reason. Since Florida is a “No Fault” State, the primary area of dispute between a husband and wife is usually financial. It is obviously important to know all of the facts before negotiations begin. The following is a list of the financial information required pursuant to Florida law. All parties MUST complete a Financial Affidavit. This Affidavit lists a party’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. It is a sworn document, signed under oath by the client, swearing to its truthfulness. A financial affidavit must be filed in all dissolution proceedings, even in the most simplified uncontested matter. In addition to the financial affidavit, certain documentation must also be exchanged between the parties within approximately six weeks from the date of filing. If it is a simplified divorce, this requirement can be waived by both parties. The Financial Affidavits must be produced however. The documents that are required include: ▸▸ Income tax returns ▸▸ Pay stubs for the past three months ▸▸ Statement of income ▸▸ Loan applications and financial statements prepared during the preceding 12 months ▸▸ Deeds, leases and promissory notes executed during the past 12 months ▸▸ Checking account statements for the past three months ▸▸ Bank statements (other than checking) for the past 12 months ▸▸ Brokerage account statements for the last 12 months ▸▸ The most recent statements showing value of retirement accounts, profit sharing or deferred compensation accounts. ▸▸ Life insurance documentation ▸▸ Credit card statements for the past three months The above list is just a partial list of what might be required. Requests often require documents dating back three years. It is not unusual that clients often become quite anxious when assigned the task of gathering this information. Here are a few words of advice: ▸▸ Do not wait for the last minute to gather these items. Time deadlines are extremely important and any delays could result in sanctions, which can include payment of attorney’s fees to opposing counsel. ▸▸ Don’t try and do everything at once. Give yourself enough time to “pace yourself.” ▸▸ Be as accurate as possible in filling out all Financial Affidavits. pet of the month

“Cindy Lou Who” Cindy Lou Who is a 2 year old rescue dog so her breed is not officially known. However, she’s fondly known as a “Chowmatian” because her mother was chihuahua and she has dalmatian coloring. But, she may really be part Jack Russell terrier. She has a very spunky attitude with a loving and sweet disposition. Cindy’s favorite person is her daddy, Adam, and they play all the time. Her favorite toy is her family. She tries to get all of them to play with her all throughout the day with various toys. Cindy Lou Who’s favorite things consist of sunbathing on the patio, visiting Barkham Park and cuddling up on the couch with her human siblings. She does not care at all for motorcycles or being left alone for too long. Cindy’s all-time favorite thing to do is run around in the backyard with the kids and just have a good time. She was last seen at Barkham Park making some new furry friends.
