Caught-up in the 2014 Soccer World Cup?

T

his month , athletes from around the world

are fiercely competing for the crown in the world of soccer, the FIFA Soccer World Cup. While the competition on the field is often aggressive, these international athletes also demonstrate that our world is united in many things despite our different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. My own family is very much into sports, specifically soccer. Like many of our readers, we have an international background and have several national teams to cheer for all at the same time. There’s never a dull moment for us while the World Cup is on. Summer is a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. So let’s turn off the smartphones, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend time together watching the World Cup spectacle unfold or simply spending a day at the beach, visiting the Everglades, reading a book, playing a board game, going to the movies, splashing in the pool or just chilling out in the backyard. These quality moments together are what we and our children will remember for some time to come -- and a victory for your favorite soccer team wouldn’t be so bad either. Have a great summer! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

U.S. Chess Champion Inspires Local Chess Players By Jill Sharpe

K

ings , queens , pawns , and knights were all on the move at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre on Saturday, May 24th. Open chess play brought people from all over Broward County for friendly, non-competitive matches highlighted by an appearance by U.S. Chess Champion Hikaru Nakamaru. The City of Sunrise hosts this open play every Saturday where locals of all skill levels can play chess and trade tips with another. However, Nakamaru’s appearance caused quite a buzz among chess aficionados as people gathered around to take pictures, learn from him, and watch him play. “This is a great opportunity to give back, and promote chess’ benefits to kids,” said Nakamaru. “Chess is very good for critical thinking skills, as children can think creatively and make good decisions and older people can keep their mind going. It’s like a microcosm of life.” All ages were well-represented at the chess event, and not just to see a celebrity of the chess world. Many people there talked about how they started playing chess, the benefits of playing, and how they enjoyed teaching the game to a younger generation. Peggy Krege attended the event along with her husband and three children, catching up with friends there as the family played several matches. “This program has been amazing, it’s so beneficial for the kids to stay focused and on task. Chess shows them that there are consequences to their moves,” said Krege. “It’s fun for kids and adults to come out and for seniors to participate. It’s a community event where kids come from all the local schools, and they’re extremely engaged.” With so many chess players in one room, some participants took the opportunity to break away from the typical game of chess. One group of students brought out a chessboard where four people could play at once, taking turns with a full set of chess pieces. The Krege family played a few rounds of Bughouse, a chess variation where two teams of two players each engage in a timed match with captured chess pieces being passed to their partner. Chess has moved into the spotlight in Sunrise and Broward County as a whole. Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan was President of the Parent-Teacher Association at

Sawgrass Elementary School when the school began a chess club. From there, chess was added to the curriculum at three other local elementary schools and the School Board of Broward County plans to have formal, weekly chess education for every second- and third-grader starting next year. This is the largest scholastic chess initiative in the country, and supporters point to chess’ many academic benefits. “According to the principals and teachers, (chess) resulted in a dramatic improvement in academic performance, socialization, and critical thinking skills,” said Mayor Ryan. “Even more powerful than the classroom curriculum is the multiplier impact. Fifth-graders see second-graders playing chess. Parents feel obligated to learn. There’s nothing better for a second-grader than to say that I beat my dad in chess.” The School Board of Broward County and the Sunrise Police Department partnered with America’s Foundation for Chess “First Move” program to introduce chess to local schools in 2013. Other community-wide efforts include furnishing donated chess sets to every public school in Sunrise, hosting a “Champions of Chess” tournament for students, and encouraging local restaurants to hold family chess nights. Parents like Ray Ponce, who brought his son to Saturday’s event, have applauded these initiatives. “I bought my son his first chessboard and now it’s something we can do together,” said Ponce. “We wanted to meet Nakamaru, but Sunrise and Broward have been really good to recognize that several studies show how chess and academics go together.” The chance to meet Nakamaru brought a number of people to the Civic Center, and some brave souls tried unsuccessfully to defeat the top-ranked American chess player. Even after Nakamaru quickly dispatched of him in chess, Richard Sklar called him “terrific and a real nice fellow. He’s very kind and complementary.” While Nakamaru’s upcoming itinerary includes chess events in Prague and Dubai, players of any age and skill level can come to the lobby of the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre at 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for open chess play.

One-of-a-Kind Center for Kids With Developmental Disabilities Opens In Sunrise By Jill Sharpe

J

AFCO opened the doors last month to the newly finished Children’s Ability Center, the first center nationwide to offer family support, therapy, child enrichment and respite care, all under one roof for children up to age 22 with any developmental disability. The 60,000 square-foot center will accommodate hundreds of children per year offering families a beautiful, clean and fun place where their children can be safe and feel like they belong. Services include assessment; enhanced case management and referral; day/weekend and extended respite care; social skills training; physical, occupational, speech and applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy; music, pet and art therapy. The art studio allows children to express their creativity. However, unlike the rest of the center which is decorated beautifully, the floor of this room remains unfinished, in hopes that even the children’s accidental spills and paint splatters will create a unique work of art. “The details that went into the design of this building are extraordinary and must be seen to be truly appreciated,” said Sarah Franco, JAFCO founding executive director. “We cannot thank our community enough for its continued support over the past 21 years.” The community is invited to tour both the new JAFCO Children’s Ability Center and the JAFCO Children’s Village every month. Tour dates are listed on the JAFCO website. The center is designed knowing that parents of children with disabilities find it difficult to entrust the care of their child to someone else. Yet, they desperately need a break. To help parents overcome this hurdle, the center’s second floor is reserved for “parents only” with large overlook areas to the first floor so parents can keep an eye on their children. The goal is in time they will take the “Serenity Elevator” to the second floor parent café and simply relax or chat with other parents

10

July 2014 | Our City Sunrise

while their child is in therapy or socializing with other children. “JAFCO’s focus is on supporting the family in every way possible,” said Wendy Jenkins, director of operations and clinical services. “We offer boundless love and support to the parents and children.” “At JAFCO, we are inspired by the strength and love of parents who are raising children with disabilities,” said Linda Sachs, JAFCO developmental disabilities program coordinator. “We recognize that this can be an overwhelming and challenging journey. We want them to know they are no longer alone and that we’re here to help-- the entire community is now here to help.” The center’s long list of programs and facilities includes unique features such as a swing specifically for children who use wheelchairs so they can experience the thrill of swinging. The center also has an organic garden, a general store and a life skills environment-- a place where kids can learn gardening, shopping, cooking and socializing. The idea for the center began in 2007 when the JAFCO Board of Trustees saw the alarming increase of children in South Florida and throughout the country diagnosed with some kind of developmental disability. Estimates suggest one in ten babies have a developmental disability diagnosis. With the support of $1 million dollar gifts from Sam and Adele Borger, Stephen and Helene Weicholz and The David Posnack Foundation, the first phase of the center has become a reality. Designed by Architect Teen Woon in the beautiful architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright, the facility opened for services in June. A grand opening will be held in September. Anyone interested in learning more about the capital naming opportunities or any companies looking to be part of JAFCO’s new center should contact Randi Winter, JAFCO capital campaign director or Gail Marlow, JAFCO development officer at 954-749-7230.

ChildNet Hosts Field Day for Foster Care “Fun-Raiser” By Jill Sharpe

I

n an effort to raise awareness of the needs of

children in the foster care system, ChildNet, the CommunityBased Care (CBC) lead agency in Broward and Palm Beach counties, recently hosted the second annual Field Day for Foster Care at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. Gathering 16 non-profit partner agencies, it was the largest collaborative “fun-raiser” to serve the community’s most vulnerable youth. Family and company teams of 10 paid $250 per team, $25 per person, to compete in basketball, king of the hill, three-legged races, rapid-fire corn hole competition, big wheel races, craziest costumes and for a team spirit award. The non-profit partners received dollars from their team’s registration fees. The event also featured bounce houses, face painting and additional fun activities for the “real children” who attended. “The key to successful fundraising and making an impact on the lives of children is getting the community involved, and what bigger and better way to do that than through joining the most influential non-profit groups to form the largest collaborative field day event ever,” said Elizabeth Wynter, director of community relations at ChildNet. “ I conceived this once a year event as an opportunity for adults to act like children and to inspire them to think about opening their hearts and homes to children in care.” There has been a 12 percent increase in the number of foster care homes (currently 471 licensed) in Broward County. On the flip side, there has also been a 16-percent increase in the number of kids coming into the program, so as one side grows, so, too, does the other. “Although we have more foster homes, we also have more children in need, and providing services is increasingly difficult,” said Wynter. Broward and Palm Beach counties really do a great job of building awareness, and we want that to continue.” Sponsorships for the fundraiser included Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, Tripp Scott and Greenberg Traurig LLP, Marsh & McLennan, BB&T, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Joe Rogers Family, GrayRobinson, P.A., Baptist Health South Florida and Bluegreen Vacations. Proceeds from the event benefited 4KIDS of South Florida, Camelot Community Care, ChildNet, Children’s Harbor, Chrysalis Health, Family Central, FLIPANY, FLITE Center, Florida Baptist Children’s homes, Forever Family, HANDY, Hearth Gallery of Broward County, Henderson Behavioral Health, KID,

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Sunrise is the Place to be for Summertime Fun BY MICHAEL RYAN, MAYOR OF SUNRISE

N

othing says “Fourth of J uly ” like marching

bands, spirited parade floats and a colorful fireworks display. Here in Sunrise we offer all of that and more! Our holiday celebration starts at 10:00 a.m. with a patriotic parade. Floats will wind their way west along Sunset Strip until they reach City Park, the site of Sunrise’s Family Fun Day. There you’ll enjoy free children’s activities, rides and refreshments until 1:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., the party will resume outdoors at the BB&T Center. Join us for live music by the Jacob Jeffries Band and Grammy Awardnominated rockers the Spin Doctors, followed by a fantastic fireworks display. Admission and parking are free. Another of this month’s highlights is the Lyrical Lounge, an open “mic” night for teens. It’s a great time for students to reconnect and share their creativity while school is out. We’ll have a stage set up in our Civic Center Gallery on July 18. Poets, musicians and other talented teens are welcome. Since the summer months seem to fly faster than others, why not mark your calendar for August? Our Police Department will host National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 5. Stop by the Public Safety Building that evening for crime-prevention information, displays and demonstrations, as well as free refreshments and entertainment. Families are also invited to attend our Back to School Round-Up on Saturday, August 9, at 4:00 p.m. Arrive early: the first 1,000 school-age children with proof of Sunrise residency will receive a free drawstring backpack filled with school supplies, along with a new book. Representatives from all of our neighborhood schools will be at the Round-Up to answer your questions about the new academic year. There will also be plenty of western-themed fun, including carnival games,

rides, arts and crafts, and free “chuck wagon” refreshments. For more information about our great city, including the events and programs I’ve mentioned here, please visit us online at www.sunrisefl.gov and www.facebook.com/sunrisefl. Have a wonderful month!

Protect Your Roof with Roof-A-Cide By Julie Levin

L

ocal home owners know all too well how frustrating it can be

to maintain a sparkling clean roof in the face of such intense heat and heavy summer rains. Mold and mildew quickly grows and spread in these conditions, turning an otherwise beautiful home into an eyesore. Consequently, when customers declare war on mold and those pesky violation letters, they turn to the professionals at Roof Treatment Inc. In addition to providing excellent customer service, Roof Treatment Inc. is also one of the elite few that uses the Roof-A-Cide system. This exclusive chemical is the only EPA approved algaecide/fungicide currently on the market. It’s unique formula is copper based, which is a natural antimicrobial, and also one of the oldest fungicides known to man. So in addition to receiving a two year warranty on their roof treatment, customers are also receiving peace of mind knowing that their home is being treated with an active ingredient that has a successful track record of several thousand years. Roof Treatment Inc. is co-owned by Christina and her brother Frank Miele. Recently, they sat down to answer some frequently asked questions about their Davie based business, and the methods behind their mold decimating success.

How does Roof-A-Cide compare to chlorine bleach and conventional pressure cleaning? It is true that both chlo-

you stick with the Roof-A-Cide treatment program, roof cleaning will be a thing in the past.

What are the benefits of Roof-A-Cide? Owning a home is the most

important and expensive investment that many South Floridians will ever make. That being said, the structural integrity of its roof is paramount to protecting the value of the home itself, as well as the family that it covers. With the Roof-A-Cide method, this integrity is not only maintained, it’s actually lengthened. By eliminating the need for repeated pressure cleanings or caustic chemicals, concrete tiles are much less likely to shift or break, and asphalt shingles will not become as brittle or prone to cracking. The less that a roof is walked on or harshly cleaned, the greater its durability will be.

A properly cared for roof can have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years, and implementing Roof-A-Cide into the maintenance plan can help homeowners get the full life span. Unfortunately, most Floridians must replace their roof in half that time due to unnecessary wear and tear. It’s also worth mentioning that Roof-A-Cide will not damage the grass or landscaping around the home.

Is Roof-A-Cide environmentally friendly? In a nutshell, yes!

An application of the Roof-A-Cide rine and Roof-A-Cide are initially product requires 30 gallons of effective at removing impurities water. This is the equivalent of a from a roof. Firewall Serve-A-Thon Has Big Impact in Sunrise By Jill Sharpe

O

n Saturday, May 3 rd, Firewall Centers hosted its first annual Serve-A-Thon, a hands-on opportunity for students to learn the value of giving back while making a lasting difference in their neighborhoods. Hundreds of students, including many from Bair Middle School in Sunrise, along with their Firewall mentors, Regent Bank volunteers, and other community leaders worked hard as they painted and planted trees at Firewall’s High School Center, planted trees at the Davie Police Station, landscaped public spaces, painted at the Davie Rodeo Grounds, cleaned up and beautified Pompano Beach Middle School by mulching, planting trees and flowers, as well as served food to the homeless in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Executive Director Andy Fernandez expressed that “it was powerful to see students that come from poverty and difficult circumstances not only enthusiastically give of themselves, but also raise money to support Firewall. This event truly taught them what servant leadership is all about.” This mindset was echoed by students like Astrel from Pompano Beach Middle School who says that “serving made me feel like a true leader.” The lesson of the day was that serving is great for everyone involved! Santina from Plantation Middle School expressed that “It made my day. I felt good, and it’s been a while since I have felt that way!” Indian Ridge Middle School student Nate, who planted trees and bushes at the Davie Town Hall, says that his favorite part about serving “was the feeling I got after having a part in making something beautiful. I take for granted all of the hard work that goes into all the things around me.”

18

July 2014 | Our City Sunrise

The headline sponsor for the Serve-A-Thon event was Regent Bank, whose employees were a huge help in serving side-by-side with our students. Other sponsors who helped make Firewall’s Serve-A-Thon an incredible success were the Town of Davie, Pompano Beach Middle School, Whole Foods Coral Springs and Plantation, McDonald’s on Hiatus Rd., Enova Transportation Network, and Hope South Florida. It was a proud day for our community to see so many people of different ages and backgrounds come together to serve and give back to our neighborhoods. Firewall student Arianna speaks for everyone when she says that by serving, “I felt like I could make a change in the world.” Firewall was established in 2003 in response to the death of a thirteen year old girl who overdosed on drugs while left unsupervised during after-school hours. Ever since, the agency has been operating daily after-school tutoring and mentoring centers for at-risk students that instill character values and promote academic success, supporting them as they strive toward their greatest potential. For the 2013/2014 school year, Firewall’s T.H.I.N.K. (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back) Leadership program had six Centers serving almost 250 Broward county students. The program’s overarching objective is to improve performance outcomes among at-risk students as related to their school attendance, behavior, and course performance, thus helping them to ultimately achieve self-sufficiency as they pursue their life goals. You can learn more about Firewall Centers, see more pictures of the Serve-A-Thon, and find out how you can get involved at www.firewallcenters.org or follow them at www.facebook.com/firewallcenters

Sunrise Fire Rescue Teams With Piper High School to Spread Safety Message By Jill Sharpe

prepared for Prom, they were reminded to keep the night memorable for the right reasons, not as a victim of a vehicle accident. Sunrise Fire-Rescue and Piper High School partnered to bring the “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive” distracted driving safety campaign to students throughout Prom week. “Sharing the ‘Take 5’ message is a great way to educate the students of Piper High School and the Sunrise community about the realities and dangers of texting while driving,” said Assistant Principal Matthew Dearen. “The timing of the campaign coincided with Prom, and was a welcome addition to our Prom Smart Decisions Awareness week.” To emphasize the realities of the campaign, Westway Towing brought a wrecked car to display near the entrance of the student parking lot. The car displayed the ‘Take 5’ campaign slogan and served as an up-close reminder of the damage distracted driving can cause. ““Prom night is supposed to be special and fun,” said Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “Our goal is always to encourage students to be safe, wear their seat belts, don’t text and drive, and, of course, don’t drink and drive.”

Piper High School TV production students are no strangers to this message. They participated in the “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive” public service announcement video contest earlier this year and submitted several 30- to 60-second PSAs to educate their peers on the importance of driving safely and not texting and driving. The “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive” campaign is sponsored by the Broward Regional EMS Council, BEACON-TV, and other local partners, including Sunrise Fire-Rescue. The Broward EMS Council initially launched Take 5 in 2012 by encouraging motorists to pull off of the road for five minutes if they absolutely need to send a text message. Broward County even designated May as “Take 5 To Stay Alive - Don’t Text & Drive” Month. The importance of this issue was highlighted by a study done by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute that found that answering text messages create a crash risk 23 times worse than if the driver is not being distracted.

Is It Safe to Whiten My Child’s Teeth?

Choosing the Right Specialist for an ACL Rupture

By Dr. Maruri

Dr. Al DeSimone

A

s our society grows more and more estheti -

cally conscious, I have had several parents ask me if it is safe to whiten their child’s teeth. A recent study showed that 32% of children and 19% of these children’s parents were dissatisfied with their tooth color, while only 9% of dentists felt these subjects had an unsatisfactory color. This push for super white (what I refer to as toilet bowl white teeth) is no surprise given that pharmaceutical companies invest twice as much into marketing than research. Over the counter (OTC) tooth whitening is a $2 billion a year industry, and is rapidly growing. To better answer the safety of tooth whitening, we need to better understand the different ways one can whiten their smile. ▸▸ Whitening toothpastes will either contain an abrasive agent to mechanically remove surface stains and increase the whiteness of teeth, and/or a low concentration bleaching agent to slowly bleach teeth over time. While abrasive pastes will “scrub” teeth clean and make them look whiter, they will also abrade teeth and wear away the enamel much faster than regular toothpastes. The low concentration bleach containing toothpastes will have a minimal effect and most of the whitening comes from the mechanical abrasion on the teeth. ▸▸ Whitening strips are filled with 5-15% hydrogen peroxide (HP) and are worn for 5-60 minutes. Approximately 28 days of use are needed to get clinical significant whitening (increase of four shades or more on the Vita shade guide). ▸▸ Custom-made (by your dentist), at-home bleaching trays contain 5-20% carbomide peroxide (CP) gel and are worn at night for one to two weeks. CP is a much more stable molecule than HP and therefore continues to work for several hours after application. Also the gel, unlike the strips, can better reach into interproximal areas (area in-between teeth) ▸▸ Whitening rinses generally contain a low concentration of HP, 1.5%. Studies have shown that systems utilizing trays are much more effective than rinses. Studies show that whitening observed with rinses are not clinically significant. So are any of these techniques safe for children? Few studies have been performed on the safety of whitening children’s teeth (for ethical reasons). Though the American Academy of Pediatric Dentist encourages the judicious use of bleaching in adolescent patients and discourages full-arch cosmetic bleaching for patients with mixed or primary dentition (if baby teeth are still present). The reason is that primary teeth have thinner enamel and larger pulp chambers then permanent teeth. Therefore bleaching agents can better enter into the pulps of these teeth and cause sensitivity. Also, primary teeth are naturally more white then permanent. So there is no reason to worry when your child first set of permanent teeth appears to be darker than the rest of the arch. It is better to wait until all permanent teeth are fully erupted (usually around age 11-13) and be under the supervision of your dentist before you attempt any form of tooth whitening on your child. nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures

remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help ruleout concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice.

Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He Specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

R

office collection box or at the local post office. Promptly remove incoming mail.

ecent breach of personal data at local

stores has placed us all on high alert as identity theft rises. Let’s power-up our day with a strong cup of coffee and review some key information about Identity Theft.

What is Identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. In many cases, the victim is unaware of the activity until months after the incident.

Identity Theft can happen in various ways:

▸▸ Stealing your purse/wallet ▸▸ Stealing financial statements from the mail ▸▸ Diverting mail from its intended recipients by submitting a change of address form.

▸▸ Rummaging through trash for personal data. ▸▸ Obtaining information transmitted electronically. ▸▸ Skimming or electronic device theft of card numbers.

What can you do to prevent identity thieves from accessing your information?

Here are a few practices that will minimize unauthorized access to your personal information: ▸▸ Contact your financial institution if you do not receive a monthly statement/bill. ▸▸ Review account statements carefully to ensure all transactions were authorized by you. ▸▸ Do not leave bill payment envelopes in your mailbox. Deposit them in a post

▸▸ Review your free annual credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com ▸▸ Don’t leave your Social Security Card in your wallet/purse and ask why when someone requests your social security number.

▸▸ Never click on links sent to you by an unsolicited email. ▸▸ Don’t give your account number to anyone on the phone unless you’ve made the call to a company you know to be reputable.

▸▸ Shred personal and financial documents when you no longer need them. ▸▸ Don’t write your account number on the outside of an envelope.

What should I do if it happens to me?

If you’ve detected fraudulent activities on your account contact your financial institution immediately. Make a note for your file of what institution was contacted, who you talked to and the date/time your call was made. Determine whether you will need a police report or take further action. In response to concerns over identity theft, numerous companies and financial institutions have stepped in with identity theft protection services that can help you monitor your accounts. These services may also include fraud alerts and freezes on your credit reports. Many people find it valuable and convenient to pay a company to keep track of their financial accounts, credit reports, and personal information. Others choose to do this on their own. Ask your financial institution about their identity theft program and see if it’s right for you. Nancy Rapport is the CEO and President of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida. T

he 4th of J uly is a time to celebrate our

nation’s independence! Sunrise Fire-Rescue encourages you to celebrate safely by leaving the fireworks to the professionals. Although packaging or manufactures may label fireworks as being safe for the public, research and statistics on the dangers involved with these fireworks are proving just the opposite. Each year on the 4th of July, the number of fires reported increases more than on any other day of the year, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). In fact, fireworks are directly linked to two out of five fires reported that day. Firework related injuries, devastating burns and deaths occur each year due to improper use, handling and lack of adult supervision. Children ages 5 to 14 are at more than twice the risk of the general population for injuries due to fireworks. Sparklers can burn at a temperature of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s nearly six times as hot as boiling water at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and is hot enough to cause third-degree burns. The NFPA reported that more than 80 percent of emergency room firework injuries involve fireworks consumers are permitted to use. Sparklers and small firecrackers account for the highest percentage of injuries out of all consumer fireworks. In 2012, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports show there were actually six firework-related deaths from either homemade or illegal fireworks. With that in mind, we encourage you to attend a professional fireworks display and to avoid consumer fireworks. Join us at the City of Sunrise 4th of July Celebration at the BB&T Center from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This free, outdoor event features children’s rides and activities, a variety of food and retail vendors, performances by the Spin Doctors, and of course, the spectacular fireworks display.

Legally Speaking

Looking for Answers By Evan Baron

A

s we go through our daily lives , we often

come upon situations which require us to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions can be minor in nature and other times they can be somewhat more complex. None of them compares to the decision a person has to make in deciding if they should pursue a divorce from their spouse. I hear these questions almost every day from either prospective or existing clients; “Should I stay married or get a divorce?”; “Should I accept this deal or go to trial?”; “What

should I do?” Unfortunately, divorce attorneys don’t always have the answers. I can certainly advise a client based upon my 35 plus years of experience, but in reality the decision must always be that of the client. When I meet with a prospective new client who is considering a divorce, I am often asked for my opinion as to what he or she should do. I explain that I do not ever encourage an individual to get divorced, but obviously sometimes that is in fact their best option. It is however, a very personal decision that he or she must

make based upon all the factors involved. I can advise a person as to the law and how his or her case will probably get resolved. I say “probably,” because when there are two parties involved, it is impossible to predict what the other party will be seeking. I often explain to a client that no matter how reasonable they may be, the process will also depend upon the reasonableness of their spouse. So I am asked, “What should I do?” I tell them that it is their decision and they will know when it is time to make that decision. I have had individuals return to retain my services one or even two years after their initial consultation. It took that long to be able to answer the question, “What should I do?” Once the process has begun, I am also often asked “What should I do?” when faced with the decision to either enter into a marital settlement agreement or proceed to trial. Once again, I can advise them based upon the law and my experience, but no attorney can ever guarantee a particular result if the case goes to trial. Often times, the agreement is extremely fair and equitable and, as such, I advise my client that it is a good deal for them and they should certainly consider it. If the offer is equal to “their worst day in court,” then the decision is also fairly easy. Why settle a case when you will probably get better results from a judge? Of course the usual reason is financial, since it may cost more money to go to trial than to settle. We sometimes have clients who disregard our advice and accept a “deal” that may not be the best that they can receive. Of course, it is ultimately their decision. So, in reality the person who can best answer the question “What should I do?” is the client. Of course, I can only hope that decision is made after they consider my advice. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Ask the Sheriff

pet of the month

Helping Our Children Navigate from Childhood to Adulthood

“Morgan”

By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

A

large part of growing up is learning from

our mistakes. The lessons we learn when we are young help to build the strong moral character of our adulthood. As Sheriff, I have taken steps to ensure the positive development of many of our county’s youth by mandating civil citations for first-time juvenile offenders. A civil citation in lieu of an arrest provides a much-needed opportunity for a minor who has made a mistake to learn from that mistake. Putting vulnerable adolescents in jail is only teaching them to become career criminals, and arrest records impede employment opportunities and access to credit. After being issued a citation, a child can accept responsibility, obtain appropriate counseling and be diverted away from the criminal court system. The civil citation initiative has been successful in helping the children and teenagers of our county keep their records clean and their focus clear. In the year prior to my mandating civil citations to eligible juveniles, only 68 were referred to the program. In the 14 months since I made it mandatory, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies have referred 376 juveniles, more than five times the previous number. That’s 376 children with the opportunity to stay in school and out of jail. That’s 376 second chances. That’s thousands of tax dollars saved. That’s hundreds of lives regained. I am also thrilled to report that approximately 96 percent of the youths who complete the civil citation program do not reoffend. To further the effort of keeping children in schools and out of jail, last year I signed the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. (Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Support, and Education) program agreement. P.R.O.M.I.S.E. is an agreement signed by BSO, various agencies and the Broward County public schools. The initiative was a response to the zero tolerance approach, which had previously guided teachers and administrators to discipline children through expulsions, suspensions and unnecessary arrests. The P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program offers alternatives to arrests and suspensions through school counseling sessions and interventions, and aids in ending the school-toprison pipeline. Since signing the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program agreement, schoolrelated arrests have decreased by more than 65 percent. In most instances, a student may receive up to four chances to complete the program and learn from a wrongdoing before the school board turns the matter over to law enforcement. Between August 2013 and May 2014, there were 1,955 referrals to the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program. These students won’t have a criminal record and will have another chance to go on to lead productive lives. Programs that support education over incarceration will always have my support because they are an effective way to keep kids on the path to academic success. One of our responsibilities as parents, teachers and mentors is to help our children navigate successfully from childhood to adulthood. A coordinated effort from the sheriff’s office, parents, teachers, community groups and leaders is necessary to help safeguard their accomplishments. This effort will not only preserve and enrich the lives of our children, but it will also strengthen the bonds of our community. Our success must be measured by the number of children we keep in school and out of jail. The civil citation and P.R.O.M.I.S.E. programs are dedicated to the future of our youth. To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter@browardsheriff.
