Make Time for Family

T

his summer ’ s World Cup fever has subsided,

vacation memories are slowly fading away, and the kids are settling back into their school routines. Our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” Before we become bogged down with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let us not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun family time. Best of all, the sun is not quite so scorching hot, but the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So, turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit and get out there and enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit the oldest town in North America (Saint Augustine), catch some fish, or visit your favorite characters in the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day at school or work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Free, Bi-monthly Event in Sunrise Spotlights Teen Talent By Jill Sharpe

P

eter L ange and Amorette Lorimil are two of many

aspiring local teen writers and performers who share their talent with others at “Lyrical Lounge” Open Mic night every other month at the Sunrise Civic Center. Lyrical Lounge, one of several local on-ongoing spoken word/poetry initiatives under the umbrella of Word Up!, gives teens an opportunity to express themselves and build confidence. The City of Sunrise hosts the free event in partnership with the Jason Taylor Foundation, the Omar Hardwick blueapple Poetry Network and the SPEAK Collective. The Lyrical Lounge is unique in its by teens/for teens format. Students from SPEAK! – the blueapple Poetry Network’s elite spoken-word group – emcee and help promote the event. Poets, musicians, singers/songwriters,

rappers, clean comedians, actors and other talented youth (ages 13-19) are invited to take the stage as long as they sign in by 7:15 p.m. to perform. “In many ways the stage is both a platform and therapeutic,” said Christine Pfeffer, Communications Director for the City of Sunrise. “Teens from all over the County discuss subject matter such as empowerment, bullying, education and growth.” Peter Lange, a senior at Northeast High School who wants to become a screenwriter or playwright, said the opportunity to write and perform have made a world of difference in his life. “Writing helps me solve and understand my problems, emotions and life,” Lange said. “Then when speaking my problems, feelings and ideas in front of strangers I build a different level of confidence.” Lorimil, a senior at Dillard Center for the Arts. said the Lyrical Lounge gives teens an outlet to express themselves. “We’re always ignored or pushed aside and this gives us a chance to know someone is listening.” Lorimil, who plans on majoring in music theory and composition as well as music production in college, said participating in Lyrical Lounge and the other spoken word poetry initiatives has truly been a blessing. “It has changed me in so many ways. It’s made me so much more outgoing because the network and foundation force me to interact with other people and teens. It’s made me more confident and most important it’s made me appreciative of opportunities I would have otherwise overlooked.” Since 2009, Word Up! has grown exponentially - serving 3,000 Broward County students, many who reside in Sunrise. Programs under the Word Up! umbrella include: 1. Word Up! Poetry Slam (Teens): slam competition places dual emphasis on writing/performance, on topics suh as empowerment and education. Slam

5K Run in Sunrise Will Benefit Young at Art Museum By Jill Sharpe

O

ptime Consulting and Young at Art M useum (YAA) are inviting the

community to come out to Markham Park on Sunday, September 21st for a 5K Run to benefit the museum. Registration starts at 6:00 AM for the 7:30 AM race at the park, located at 16001 West State Road 84 in Sunrise. Participants should arrive at Shelters 5, 6, and 7 for the festivities. Seventy-five percent of the net funds raised at the 5K will benefit YAA. Open since 1989, the museum is a hub of arts education, allowing children to learn about the world through hands-on encounters with a variety of artistic mediums. In addition to their popular museum, YAA also coordinates several outreach programs to bring arts education to lowincome communities all over Broward County. Optime Consulting, a high tech marketing consulting firm based in Weston, is hosting the 5K. The race is part of their ‘Opteam One Cause’ social responsibility initiative, and the company is looking to build on their philanthropic work after donating nearly forty thousand dollars to charities like the Make-A-Wish Foundation last year alone. “(Optime) is committed to do everything we can to give back to the community and have fun,” said Optime CEO Maria Merce Martin. “We selected YAA since they are doing amazing work with kids and with communities in need.” There will be several raffles held among people who register for the run, with the grand prize being a smart car. Awards and medals will be given out to top finishers, including awards for each age group. In addition to having food and live music there, t-shirts will be given out to the first one thousand runners who pre-register for the event.

Pre-registration is encouraged as organizers are expecting twelve hundred participants this year after one thousand people were involved last year. Adults pay twenty five dollars to register prior to the event, and thirty five dollars the day of. Students, those seventeen years old and younger, pay twenty dollars. At the 5K, Optime will also launch a new mobile phone application that combines physical fitness with charitable giving. This free app awards virtual ‘medals’ to the user for reaching their personalized workout goals, and those medals can be redeemed to benefit charities of the users’ choosing. “We developed this mobile app to help non-profit agencies raise money while inspiring people to get in shape,” said Merce Martin. “This is an event where people can make a difference and still have fun, whether you’re a professional runner or just bringing the family. It’s a win-win.” To register and find out more information, please visit www.optime5Krun.com.

Teens who want to test their talent on stage can come to our Lyrical Lounge Open Mic Night on Friday, September 26, in the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery. For details about Word Up! and the Lyrical Lounge, call 954-747-4662. If you’d like more information about our great city, including the events and programs I’ve mentioned here, please visit us online at www.sunrisefl.gov and www.facebook.com/sunrisefl. Have a wonderful month!

chool is back in session and summer officially

ends this month. Although your vacation memories may be fading, storm season is not. In fact, Atlantic Basin hurricanes are most likely to develop from mid-August through the end of October. Instead of feeling stressed, be prepared. The Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department recommends these simple actions: Make sure you’re on the City’s CodeRED call list. This highspeed telephone notification system enables Sunrise officials to deliver important messages, such as storm advisories and boil-water orders. To submit your home, cell, or business number visit www.sunrisefl.gov/codered. The data collected will be used only for emergency notification purposes. Stock up on supplies. If a storm strikes, help may not be available immediately. Be sure to have a three- to five-day supply of water and non-perishable food on hand for each member of your household, including pets. Other important items include medications, hygiene products, and a battery-operated radio. Create a family communication plan. Family members may become separated during an emergency, so plan how you’ll reconnect. It can be helpful to identify an out-of-area relative or family friend who everyone can reach out to, and who can share the information among loved ones. Children should memorize what to do, where to go, and whom to call in an emergency. For additional information – including a complete list of suggested emergency supplies – please visit www.sunrisefl.gov/hurricane. Next month brings with it a storm of culture, including the start of the Sunrise Symphonic Pops Orchestra’s 28th season. Concerts are scheduled October 26, December 21, February 8, March 15 and April 26 in the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. Student discounts are available and ticket sales are already underway:

Back to School Round-Up Is Bigger and Better Than Ever By Jill Sharpe

T

here’ s no doubt about it. The City of S unrise is proud of its

schools and there is no better way to show that pride than to host an amazing Back to School Round-Up each year to start everyone’s school year off on the right foot. This year’s Round-Up, held on August 9th at the Sunrise Civic Center, was bigger and better than ever. Nearly 4,000 residents attended and everyone had a great time. The first 1,000 school-age children received a supply-filled bookpack and an age appropriate book. According to Beth Zickar, Leisure Services Director for the City of Sunrise, the best part of the event was the book giveaway. “It was a joy to watch the faces of the children as they each chose their own book,” said Zickar. “I love to see kids get excited about reading as it’s so important,” she said. At its heart, the Round-Up is a celebration. It brings the community together to mark the end of summer with rides, games, music and refreshments. But it also provides schools and families with a valuable opportunity to connect in an

informal setting. All of the City’s public schools are represented by administrators, teachers and volunteers. In addition, attendees received a copy of the city’s new Neighborhood Public Schools guidebook, which describes the terrific educational opportunities in Sunrise. Baptist Health Urgent Care – Sawgrass was the title sponsor this year. ”There were also many generous donors who helped us fill the students’ backpacks with supplies,” said Christine Pfeffer, Communications Director for the City of Sunrise. Donors included 4imprint, Academy Coach, Alpha Chess Academy, Amsan, Baptist Health, Craven Thompson and Associates, Florida Blue, Florida International University, Florida League of Cities, Florida Virtual School, Gold Coast Schools, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce, Kimberly-Clark, Metropica, Office Depot, S&S Worldwide, Scholastic Books, Sun Bergeron, TSS Photography and Walgreens.

rthroscopic surgery is the way most S ports

Medicine doctors in the world are able to get inside the joint (like the knee) to fix, repair, clean up and do a debridement of the joint. Patients need arthroscopic surgery because they injured their joint and have injured their cartilage, have loose bodies, or have diseases that do not respond or get better with the classical nonsurgical approach. This is also the most common way we operate patients with ACL ligament tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and intra-articular loose bodies. I must emphasize that a surgical procedure in sports medicine is only needed when the patient has severe problems with the shoulder and knee joint. Most of the time, patients immediately after an injury need to be treated with medication by mouth like antiinflammatory medication, icing of the injured part, elevation of the extremity and immediate rest. If the pain and disability does not go away the patient needs to visit an emergency room or an orthopedic surgeon. Usually x-rays are taken to make sure there is no bone problem like a fracture and a complete physical exam done. Further testing with an MRI scan may be needed in some cases. The purpose of the arthroscopic surgery is to make a patient painless and functional. This new technology has revolutionized medicine and continues to evolve to the point that today I am able to do the arthroscopic surgery doing ONE single small incision. Most surgeons who do arthroscopic surgery need to do two or three small incision poke holes, to do the surgery in that joint. Those extra two or three holes are still needed for other complex surgeries. This new technique uses ONLY ONE small incision and was created as a less intrusive method to operate joints especially the knee joint. Through that one incision I am able to do many of the arthroscopic surgeries commonly done in the knee and I DO NOT need to do two or three small incisions. The most common surgeries that I can do with a single incision portal are surgery for meniscus tear, loose bodies inside the joint, diagnostic arthroscopy, debridement of infection inside the knee joint and synovectomies. Again, more complex surgeries will still require the orthopedic surgeon to use two or three extra holes to do the surgery. The advantages of this single portal arthroscopic surgery has to do with reducing the number of incisions from three or two to just one single incision causing most patients to report less pain, better immediate movement, less swelling of the joint and faster recovery or rehabilitation. This will then allow the patient to start the standard rehabilitation protocol faster to resume activities of daily living like walking, standing and eventually recovering full sport capacity without pain, swelling or locking episodes. In conclusion, single portal knee arthroscopy is a new technique that continues to provide new more effective ways to help the patients go back into an active lifestyle and a the sport they want to play. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901. White Spots after Braces Removal By Dr. Michael Maruri

W

hat are white spots lesions?

Carious white spot lesions, or tooth decalcification, are caused when active caries create micro perforation on the enamel surface of teeth. With an intact but porous surface layer, the enamel will appear chalky white, especially when dehydrated. The white spot lesions can be either active or arrested. Active white spots lesions have bacteria still present and leaching acid into the enamel. If the lesions become large enough, then a piece of enamel will break and cavitation will occur (a.k.a. a cavity). In arrested white spot lesions, your body has started to remineralize the lesions. The remineralized porous layer, however, will still appear white or chalky on the surface.

What causes white spot lesions?

These lesions are caused by an accumulation of plaque on the teeth. Plaque contains bacteria (mutans streptococci and lactobacilli) that produce lactic acid as a byproduct of when they metabolize simple sugars. The leaching of acid onto the teeth is what causes the decalcification and the white spots. Bacteria in plaque also causes gingivitis (swollen gums). Therefore, the white spots may not be visible until after the gums have shrunk, which is usually 4-6 weeks after braces removal.

What can I do to prevent white spot lesions with braces?

The number one thing you can do is to remove the plaque on your teeth by brushing and flossing! You should brush at least 2-3 times daily for two minutes each time. Also, you should limit the amount of sugar you consume. Remember the acid forming bacteria only feed off of simple sugars. The time the sugar is in contact with your teeth is more of a determining factor for white spot lesions then the amount of sugar you consume. Therefore, sugary foods that are in contact with your teeth for prolonged periods of time, such as candy, gum, mints and soft drinks, should be avoided. Supplementing your brushing with a fluoride rinse twice a day will help strengthen the enamel on your teeth. Likewise, your orthodontist can prescribe toothpaste that has a high fluoride content, or even paint a fluoride varnish on your teeth. Also available by prescription is MI Paste, which is a calcium casein paste that some studies have shown to prevent and even remineralize white spot lesions. Lastly, the use of xylitol as a sugar substitute will cause good bacteria to colonize the plaque mass instead of acid producing bacteria.

What can I do if I have white spot lesions after braces removal?

Initially after braces removal, your teeth are dehydrated and any white spots formed will appear whiter then they will once the tooth hydrates. If you still notice the white spots after a couple of days, then your orthodontist may attempt to remineralize the lesions with fluoride and MI Paste. If the lesions are not deep (50-100 micons), then your orthodontist may attempt micro-abrasion of the lesion in conjunction to fluoride and MI Paste. If the lesions are deeper than 100 micons, then there is no way to mask it other than by removing all the effected enamel and replacing it with a restoration. Therefore, the best way to enjoy your new, confident smile after braces is to prevent the white spot lesions from occurring in the first place. Dr. Michael Maruri and his staff at Clear Orthodontic Solutions understand your child’s smile is just as important as their performance in school, which is why they offer convenient early-morning, after-school, and Saturday appointment times. Dr. Maruri offers a variety of treatment options to meet the unique needs of his patients, including traditional metal, clear ceramic braces, lingual braces, Invisalign, and Invisalign Teen. Still Not Saving? You’re Not Alone! By Nancy Rappaport President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

W

Pay yourself first

e all know we need to save more , but we

still don’t actually do it. Why is that? Let’s grab a cup of coffee and discuss ways to start funding our “emergency fund” savings account… Based on a recent survey from Bankrate.com, only 23% of the respondents have the recommended 6 months of living expenses saved. This survey also revealed that 60% of Americans don’t feel comfortable with their current savings position. Many experts say the problem is there’s just not enough money left at the end of the month for savings. This is true no matter how much you make; fewer than half of people with incomes more than $75,000 have that 6-month cushion. Rebecca Kennedy, the founder of Kennedy Financial Planning in Denver, says that after utilities, rent and other expenses, there’s no money left over for savings. It may seem impossible to create an emergency fund, but there are always ways to squeeze a few extra dollars out of each month. Consider these saving tips:

Start small

If you save $5 a week for four years, you’ve got an emergency fund of just over $1,000. That’s a great start to a rainy day fund, and you can do it by giving up one vending machine soda a day. You might also consider a 52-week plan where you save $1 the first week, $2 the second, and so on. At the end of a year; you’ll have saved almost $1,400.

Think about your savings as another bill. Make your savings as important as your house note, car payment, and utility bills.

Automate it

Consider setting up a Club Account or a savings account with direct deposit at your local credit union. You’ll also earn a little bit of interest on your savings to help you on your way.

Put luxury in the back seat

Whether it’s a fancy coffee drink, a fast food meal, or the latest cell phone, things we don’t need will consume much of our income. You don’t need to give up your vices all together. The answer may be to cut back on consumption instead. Go without your Starbucks on Friday or wait 6 months for the price to drop on a gadget. Put the difference into your savings account.

Look at recurring expenses

It may be time to take a look at your monthly bills. Simply giving up a premium movie channel for a year could save you as much as $240. Once you start saving, ask yourself three questions before you take even a dollar out of your emergency fund… Is this purchase absolutely necessary? What can I cut back on this month to pay for it? Do I need it right now? Unless the answer to all of these questions is yes, leave the money where it is. In the City of Sunrise, emergency calls for fall related injuries account for 14 percent of all 9-1-1 medical calls, which is the largest percentage of specific calls in Sunrise. To help prevent such injuries, the Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department has partnered with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County (ADRC) that is hosting the “A Matter of Balance” program, a course for seniors on fall prevention. The fall prevention workshop is conducted over eight sessions that are held weekly for two hours per session. The program addresses fears and concerns about falling, and provides exercises to strengthen muscles and build balance. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), one in three adults age 65 and older fall each year causing moderate to severe injuries, including hip fractures and head traumas, and in some cases those injuries can lead to death.

“Fall injuries are a main concern for us as emergency responders,” said Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “We want to keep our young-at-heart residents safe by helping them become knowledgeable on the best ways to prevent falls in their homes.” Participants receive a workbook, sponsored by Sunrise Fire-Rescue, which includes a detailed home safety checklist identifying potential fall hazards and gives recommendations on how to make their homes safe. Some of the recommendations include placing rubber matting under the small rugs, keeping passageways and staircases free from clutter, having lighting in all rooms and hallways, adding handrails or grab bars in bathrooms and having something sturdy to assist when getting out of bed. The course is been offered at the City of Sunrise Senior Center and the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center. On-going tai chi classes on also being held at the Sunrise Senior Center. For more information on how to register for the “A Matter of Balance” workshop, please contact the Aging & Disability Resource Center’s Elder Helpline at 954-745-9779 or e-mail Fire-Rescue@sunrisefl.gov.

nce again , the summer has quickly passed us

by and it’s time for the school year to begin again. It is an exciting and often stressful time as children begin a new year with new classes, new teachers and sometimes new schools. For children of divorced parents, there can be some additional stress. Of course, parents who place the children first can make it much less stressful. These days, we are seeing more equal time sharing between mom and dad. This also means equal responsibilities for each parent as well. In an intact marriage, parents usually assume certain roles and assist each other. In a one parent household, there are no longer defined roles. Mom and Dad must each make sure that they get the children up on time, ready on time, perhaps pack lunches, and most importantly complete homework assignments.

Communication between parents is the key to a successful school year. Each parent must realize that they are on the same team and they should not be looking for a “gotcha” moment. Each should be ready to assist each other, rather than trying to find fault to be used in a court proceeding. Joint parenting is not a contest; Mom vs. Dad. It is an attempt to have both parents do what’s best for the child as opposed to try and prove who may be the better parent. The most common equal time sharing schedule is two nights with one parent (Monday and Tuesday) and two nights with the other parent (Wednesday and Thursday), with weekends (Friday to Monday) being rotated from week to week. A set schedule such as this gives a child some stability and doesn’t cause him/her to wonder where he/she will be sleeping from day to day. Of course, communication between parents is still necessary. Class projects, homework and school events must be known to each parent. Parents should not rely on their children to deliver this information. Often, teachers will be accommodating and provide duplicate information, so each parent is aware of assignments and future school events. Shared Parental Responsibility requires shared information. Sometimes I encounter parents who are so angry with each other that their focus is on the other parent’s possible shortcomings rather than working together to assist the children. Unfortunately, emotions sometime interfere with common sense. It is difficult to successfully maintain an equal time sharing schedule if the parties do not reside in close proximity to one another. Getting a child to school on time can be a problem if one of the parents resides far from the school. It is not in a child’s best interests to have to wake up extremely early to accommodate a parent who chooses to reside a distance from his/her school. If a parent truly wants to have equal time, the child’s needs must come first. A child who has both parents in his/her life will derive a benefit, but only if the focus of each parent is the child and his/her needs. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

pet of the month

Honoring All Military, Public Servants, Fallen Heroes

“Chuck”

By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

M

y father , Maurice “Sonny ” I srael , served in

the military as a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant. He proudly wore the uniforms of the New York City Police Department and the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office for a combined 47 years of public service. As a decorated NYPD detective and PBSO deputy, his character, his courage and his devotion inspired me to join law enforcement. As Sheriff, I strive to live up to his memory and his expectations every day. That’s why there is one group of people I always want to acknowledge and thank personally, but I don’t always get the opportunity to do so: the men and women of our military. When we remember the victims of the 9/11 attack this month, we memorialize those who lost their lives on that fateful day in 2001. But that somber day also reminds us once again to recognize and thank our veterans, especially the 2.5 million service members who answered the call since those attacks and served in numerous U.S. deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Annually, BSO pays tribute to the sacrifices that the military, law enforcement, fire rescue and detention deputies make every day. We hold a special End of Watch Memorial for those at BSO who were killed in the line of duty. In September, we also honor the victims, fire fighters, paramedics and police officers of 9/11 during our local observance of the national memorial events. We remember the legacies and the sacrifices of all of our fallen, whether they lost their lives locally or overseas. We refer to the fallen as heroes, because there is no other act that holds greater meaning than giving one’s life to save another. Their deaths are the ultimate sacrifice. In the early morning of September 11, 2013, as I was on my way to BSO’s annual 9/11 memorial ceremony, BSO Deputy Daniel Rivera was involved in a single-car crash, which eventually took his life. While Deputy Rivera was fighting for his life in intensive care, his fellow BSO deputies lined the hallways of the hospital waiting for news and comforting his family who flew in from New York. Together, we attended Deputy Rivera’s funeral and shared our memories of him to find a sense of peace. This year, Deputy Daniel Rivera will be remembered in the End of Watch Memorial. He is one of many BSO heroes who will be greatly missed. He protected and served Broward County without expecting recognition or thanks. Deputy Rivera’s integrity and character, what he devoted to the job and to his family, will live on through his memory. We pray and say words of comfort during memorials, but words alone fall terribly short if we don’t honor these men and women with deeds worthy of their sacrifices. If we become a reflection of who our fallen heroes once were, then we can inspire others, and then their legacies live on. This month is a special time to say “thank you” to those selfless Americans who put their all on the line to safeguard our fellow residents. May God continue to bless our service men and women, our veterans, our law enforcement and fire rescue personnel, and all of their families.
