A new chapter in cancer care is here.

Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer, secondhand smoke, exposure to toxins, or a family history of lung cancer can also trigger the disease.

Bruno Bastos, MD

Cleveland Clinic Florida

Oncologist There is a false perception that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke, so lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as those with other types of cancer.

“There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Patients who have stopped smoking are still at an increased risk for lung cancer long before they receive a lung cancer diagnosis. “Additionally, the fact is that anyone can be exposed to toxins and develop lung cancer, so this is a disease that should concern everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has had a negative effect on lung cancer research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.

The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.

“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to tell their stories.” Despite the lack of funding for research, there has been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” Dr. Bastos said. “Genetic testing has helped researchers to develop therapies that target specific types of cancer cells.” Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, also are showing potential for treating lung cancer, Dr. Bastos said. These therapies already have been approved for treating skin cancer. Development of screening tools such as CT scans help with early identification of lung cancer, too, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

Happy Thanksgiving

W

ith the Halloween sugar rush slowly wearing off and the holiday season upon us, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of our kids growing up and becoming young adults, of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this month with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a traditional Thanksgiving feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. This holiday season, reach out to your friends, neighbors, co-workers and the less fortunate. Consider opening your heart (and maybe your wallet) to help to provide a holiday meal for those in need.

Sunrise Native Is Miami Dolphins Calendar Girl By Beverly Perkins

T

he Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders recently hosted their 20th annual “Swimsuit Calendar Unveiling and Fashion Show” at the North Club at the newly renovated Sun Life Stadium. The evening showcased the cheerleaders in their signature colors of aqua, orange and gold during the fashion show segment in honor of the Dolphins 50th season. Following the artistic fashion show, the 2016 calendar girls walked the runway. Sunrise native and 4th season cheerleader, Paige D., took her turn representing the tenth month as “Miss October”. Paige D. has lived in Sunrise her entire life and is a graduate of Sawgrass Elementary, Bair Middle School and Plantation High School. Being a Dolphins Cheerleader may look easy and glamourous, but these girls have to be dedicated to an intensive practice and game schedule while maintaining a healthy active lifestyle and life outside the team. During the season, they practice three times a week for three hours each night. In the offseason they take the time to rest and heal their bodies but still spend time rehearsing for local performances and events. “Balance, time management and fueling ourselves with healthy foods help us perform our best,” says Paige D. “When your mind is present, you’re able to focus on all the routines and be the best cheerleader you can be. After all, the goal is to have fun and do what you love most!”

Besides cheering on the sidelines, Paige D. enjoys giving back to the community. She can be found volunteering at animal shelters and barns to help abandoned horses, reading books to children suffering from cancer and assisting each year in the Special Olympics. She also has a passion for design and loves creating ideas for fashion and interior décor. When asked if she loves football, Paige D. responds by saying, “I am a huge football fanatic! I have grown up watching football in my household ever since I could remember. Considering my dad has always been a loyal fan to the Miami Dolphins, I followed in his footsteps and feel in love with the team also. It has been a dream cheering for my favorite team in the NFL.” The 2016 Miami Dolphins Swimsuit Calendar can be ordered by visiting www. DolphinsCheerleaders. com.

PulsePoint App Launches in Sunrise By Beverly Perkins

BE A LIFE SAVER LEARN CPR. GET THE APP. SAVE A LIFE.

=

The life-saving potential of bystander intervention is crucial as more than 1,000 people in the U.S. are dying each day from cardiac arrest. Statistically, four out of five cardiac arrests happen outside a hospital setting, so the likelihood of surviving a cardiac arrest falls by 10% for every minute that a person does not receive CPR assistance. National survival rates are below 8% because of the lack of an effective bystander CPR assistance. In addition, without timely CPR and AED assistance many who survive must endure a lifetime of residual neurological injuries. However, study after study proves effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double, and even triple, a victim’s chance of survival and reduce if not eliminate permanent and debilitating injuries. “Normally, less than a third of these victims receive CPR from a bystander,” said Sunrise FireRescue Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “Widespread participation in the PulsePoint app can significantly improve survival rates for these patients.”

Community News

T

he smartphone just got a whole lot smarter. Besides being the number one resource for immediate information, it now has the capability of saving lives and preventing catastrophic injuries. Recently the new smartphone application, PulsePoint Respond, launched and is just a click away. The free “app” is now active throughout the City of Sunrise and is available for both Android and iPhones. PulsePoint Respond takes advantage of citizens and off-duty professionals who are trained in CPR and who are willing to be available and assist in the event of an emergency. The location-aware software is linked to the 911 system. It is able to notify the registered users when someone may be in need of CPR in a nearby public space. If the app user responds to the alert they are given further instructions and also alerted if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is nearby. As a result, PulsePoint users can potentially find a victim of cardiac arrest, begin CPR and implement an AED if necessary during the time it takes for FireRescue paramedics to arrive. “We are proud to support the first launch in South Florida of this important life-saving technology tool,” explained Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan. “This app will not only inspire people to learn hands-only CPR and how to use an AED, this app will most certainly alter and save lives when minutes matter.”

For more information about PulsePoint Respond and PulsePoint AED, please visit www.pulsepoint.org. For on-going fire and life safety information, ‘Like’ them on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow them on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

he 2015-2016 academic year has been off to a great start at Sandpiper and Sawgrass Elementary Schools. After the event, certain grades were able to tour the Command Unit and SWAT van courtesy of the department. This national day, September 19th, was founded by an organization called The

made decorated cupcakes. The officers which attended requested that Kelli read some of the cards aloud and were appreciative of her efforts and those of the other participating students. Although this was a day dedicated to thanking the local law enforcers, students learned that they should always take a minute and embrace all community officials that work to keep everyone safe every day.

rs. Janick’s first graders at Sandpiper Elementary are some wise workers when it comes to their science lab. They started the school year studying predators, prey and creatures of the night in their science unit. Fortunately, Mrs. Janick signed up for a video conference and was able to obtain owl pellets for dissection so her class could have a better understanding of the relationship between predator and prey, as well as nature and the food chain. Pellets are indigestible material left in the gizzard that are unable to pass through the rest of the owl’s digestive track. In order to excrete this mass of undigested matter, the bird regurgitates it into a tight pellet similar to a cat’s hairball. Owls have been known to feed early in the evening and regurgitate a single pellet approximately 20 hours after eating. The contents can include exoskeletons of insects, bones, fur, feathers, bills, claws and teeth. Pellets are produced and regurgitated not only by owls, but by other raptors that swallow their prey whole such as eagles and hawks.

This extraordinary kit contained the owl pellets, a chart of animal bones that owls usually eat and instructions on how to do the experiment. The students put on their lab coats, gathered their tools and gloves and dissected the pellets. They were then able to match the bones they found in the pellet to the chart to determine which animal was eaten. From the skull and jaw to the pelvic and femur, the bone chart had specifics of what each possible animal looked like. Students were told to gently inspect their pellet and note the size of the bones, feathers and any other clues to identify it. Next they had to carefully separate the bones from the fur or feathers and look for evidence of the wool eating moth life cycle such as eggs, pupae casings, cocoons or larvae. Finally, they were able to lay out the bones and reconstruct the skeleton that they found. These little scientists discovered a pellet with a nest of three baby voles, small rodents resembling mice, and another with a shrew, a small mole-like mammal. Owl bet it’s going to be a great school year in Mrs. Janick’s class.

Mayor’s Message

Representation you can trust.

The City of Sunrise Salutes Veterans By Michael J. Ryan, Mayor of Sunrise

E

ach year on November 11th, we are called together as a nation and as a community to honor our men and women who have served in our U.S. military. Veterans Day is an opportunity for each of us to recognize – through gestures large and small – the individuals who are responsible for the freedoms we enjoy each day, and to understand their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families. The City of Sunrise is proud to host a Veterans Day Ceremony, and to pay tribute to our veterans with music, powerful words which evoke the importance of the day, and the camaraderie of community. But, at the same time, we understand that our commitment to these brave men and women and their families must extend throughout the year and must be measured by much more than words. That’s why, in June, the Sunrise City Commission approved the establishment of a Veterans Advisory Board. This new Board provides our community with an opportunity to engage in a more comprehensive and meaningful effort to value and understand the service of our veterans, active duty personnel, and drilling reservists, as well as the contributions and challenges of their families. We selected Board members who are veterans, active duty personnel, drilling reservists and their families, as well as representatives from the entities best positioned to assist them: small and large employers in Sunrise, social service providers, the education sector, advocacy groups, economic development groups, and the health care industry. The inaugural members of the Veterans Advisory Board were installed in September, and are already playing key roles as advisors, educators, liaisons, and advocates on behalf of military service personnel and their families. If you would like to lend your support, please contact the City Clerk’s Office (954-746-3333) for details regarding the Board’s monthly meetings. You can also help by taking part in our annual Charity Softball Tournament, set for Saturday, November 21st. Teams from businesses and organizations throughout Sunrise are invited to play and to cheer on the City of Sunrise in its much anticipated rematch with the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce. Best of all, the tournament’s proceeds will benefit veterans in our community. Contact the Sunrise Leisure Services Department at (954) 7474600 for details. Of course, November would not be complete without the City’s Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets. For almost 30 years, Sunrise officials and employees have partnered with businesses and community organizations to provide residents in need with the fixings for a complete Thanksgiving dinner. The families we serve are chosen from our social worker’s client list or recommended through the social work offices of our local schools. If you would like to contribute, please call the Sunrise Senior Center: (954) 746-3470. Have a wonderful month, and a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday! Mayor Michael J. Ryan For more information about our great city, including the events and programs I’ve mentioned here, be sure to visit us online at www.sunrisefl.gov and www.facebook.com/sunrisefl.

ith the holiday season being such a hectic time of year, we remind you to be aware of your surroundings while shopping. Please take a moment to review these tips to ensure that you and your family remain safe and have great holiday season. We hope that you patronize all of our incredible businesses that have put countless hours into making this a great holiday shopping season for those who live, work, and shop in the City of Sunrise.

Before You Shop

▸▸ Beware of Burglars who target homes while shoppers are out – secure all doors and windows. ▸▸ Carry a cell phone. ▸▸ Carry only small amounts of cash. ▸▸ Shop during daylight hours whenever possible—or go with a friend if you shop at night (or the pre-dawn sales). ▸▸ Carry keys, credit cards and cash separate from each other. ▸▸ Be extremely careful and watchful when using ATM machines. ▸▸ Wear conservative, comfortable clothing, and minimal jewelry. ▸▸ While driving, keep your doors locked and windows rolled up – including in the parking lot.

Message from police Chief

Holiday Shopping Safety

While Shopping

▸▸ Carry your purse close to your body and keep it zipped. ▸▸ Park close to where you are going and park in a well-lit area. ▸▸ Heighten your awareness – be aware of your surroundings and who is nearby. ▸▸ Grip carried items firmly and do not leave them unattended. ▸▸ Do not overload yourself with packages to maintain visibility and freedom of motion and to avoid mishaps. ▸▸ Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. ▸▸ When hurried or in a crowded shop, take the time to make sure you get all forms of ID and credit cards returned to you before leaving. ▸▸ Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost or stolen. ▸▸ Keep a record of all credit card numbers in a safe place at home. ▸▸ Keep a close eye on children while shopping.

After Shopping

▸▸ Leave the mall before closing time; it is safer to walk out of the mall with other people. ▸▸ Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distraction with the intent of taking your money or belongings. ▸▸ Use an escort or mall security if you have a lot of packages or if you are leaving the mall after closing. ▸▸ When returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and be ready to unlock the door and enter as quickly as possible. ▸▸ Check under your car as you approach it; this is a common spot for criminals to hide. ▸▸ Check the interior of your car before entering.

At Home

▸▸ After opening gifts, break down cardboard boxes of expensive electronics and put them somewhere out of public view prior to disposal, to hide the fact you have new high-value items in your home.

Happy Holidays from the Sunrise Police Department. Stay safe, Police Chief John Brooks To see more safety updates from Sunrise Police, “Like” us on Facebook at City of Sunrise Police Department, and follow us on Twitter @SunrisePoliceFL. Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving By Thomas Dibernardo, Sunrise Fire Chief

T

he Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department wishes you and your family a very happy and safe Thanksgiving. As folks are spending more time in the kitchen preparing for the holiday feast, it’s especially important to stay safety-minded. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires on Thanksgiving Day. A cooking fire is three times more likely on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year. Most fires on Thanksgiving occur between noon and 4:00 p.m. – the peak cooking hours. Most of those fires can be easily avoided by staying in the kitchen and actively paying attention to what’s cooking. Home cooking fires are typically caused by unattended cooking equipment, a heat source left too close to flammable materials, product misuse, or cooking equipment that is not properly turned off. In addition to watching what you heat, keep the pot or pan lid nearby when cooking on the stove. If something were to flame up on the burner, slide the lid over it to put it out, and turn off the heat. For any fire beyond that, immediately go outside and call 9-1-1.

The use of turkey fryers – which use a large amount of cooking oil at high temperatures –poses a significant danger and can lead to devastating burns or other injuries, as well as the destruction of property. If fried turkey is a “must” for your holiday tradition, the NFPA recommends seeking out grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants for preparation, or to use new “oil-less” turkey fryers. Thanksgiving is also a risky time for cooking-related burns. To prevent scalds and burns, cook on back burners and make sure all pot handles are turned inward so children don’t come into contact with them. Appliances that get hot, such as toaster ovens, should also be well out of a child’s reach. Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drinks are prepared or carried. Keep these tips in mind, cook with caution, and enjoy a safe Thanksgiving with your family and friends For on-going safety tips, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise FireRescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

I

t is becoming somewhat commonplace for individuals who are going through a dissolution of marriage or other family law matter to avoid the cost of an attorney. In some instances, such strategy can be cost effective and successful. If it’s a short term marriage with little or no assets and no minor children, the process can be somewhat simple. This of course means that the parties are in full agreement and are basically just seeking to terminate their marriage. Any issue which is not resolved will complicate the process. The problem arises when individuals attempt to resolve their case without having the necessary knowledge and sign away their rights. Often they realize that they may have made a mistake and as a result seek a way to void the Agreement. It is often too late and the decisions they made are final and legally binding. A Marital Settlement Agreement is a legally binding contract entered into between two parties. Of course there may be legal grounds to set it aside under certain circumstances.

I have seen a number of individuals that come to my office with a signed Mediation Agreement. These individuals went to mediation without the benefit of an attorney. Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party attempts to resolve the parties’ differences. The important aspect of mediation to remember is that a mediator is neutral and does not represent either party and should not give legal advice. Therefore, if parties choose to attend mediation when not represented by an attorney, they are on their own. Often individuals feel pressured to resolve the case so they can move on with their lives. This can sometimes lead to individuals agreeing to something they would not have agreed to if they took the time to consider it. If that person had an attorney, he/she would have been advised as to the consequences of that provision and at least the decision would have been an educated one. I often ask an individual who comes to see me with a signed agreement and was without benefit of an attorney, “Why did you sign this?” Their reply is usually, “I just wanted to get it over with.” Sometimes trying to save money by handling your case without the benefit of an attorney will result in a higher cost over the years. It is important to remember that the only issues which can potentially be changed or modified are child support, alimony and time sharing. Issues concerning the distribution of assets are not subject to change unless an individual can show fraud or duress. If an asset is waived because you wished to get the case over and subsequently you realize it was not in your best interests, likely nothing can be done to correct your mistake. If you have any doubts or concerns about the terms of an Agreement; don’t sign it and instead talk to a family law attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

The Sunrise Chamber of Commerce Gives Tips on Networking 101

Chamber News

E

18

very business association talks about the power of networking. What is evident is that so many people have heard the term but have never treated networking as a business building strategy. It happens to be a planned and strategic activity that does not come naturally. These are some networking strategies that will work at any Chamber meeting, convention or gathering of professionals. 1. The goal is to meet as many new people as time allows. If you leave the meeting only having spoken to one person you may not have received the best return on your investment of time. 2. Bring plenty of business cards. It is your primary marketing tool and it allows the potential customer to take home something that will help them remember you. 3. Don’t spend the entire time at the meeting just talking with one person. Find a way to break away, let them know you will call them in their office to continue this conversation. You want to make the most of all your time and meet as many of the prospects in the room. 4. Do not monopolize the conversation. Share the talking time. Keep in mind, just as you want to share information your business and services so do others. 5. Don’t be rude, but if you find you are talking to the wrong person, someone who is not your potential customer, find a tactful way to move on. Time is money and you have only so much time to make the right contacts. 6. When telling someone you will call them tomorrow – do it! The longer you wait the less likely the person will remember you. While when they first met you, they may have shown a great deal of interest in what you can offer, this can quickly change even, in a short 24 hours. Make the call the next day. Set up that meeting as quickly as possible and hope that the enthusiasm for what you offer will still be alive when you meet again in person.
