Spring into Summer
T
he days are getting longer and the tropical South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down on us and the air conditioners are humming at full blast. The school year is coming to an end. While we are trying to decide between the pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break. In a hurry, we are making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations. Summer is in the air! This May issue of the Our City Magazines features our annual Summer Camp Guide, which showcases the multitude of local summer camps and kids activities offered in your community. For additional camps and activities, please visit our comprehensive online South Broward Summer at www.OurCityMedia.com. In the midst of all this, spring is passing by and Mother’s Day has sneaked up on us. Let’s all take a little pause, reflect on what is important, and honor our mothers (and often our wives), for they are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. It’s time to truly pamper and spoil them for a change. Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

Mayors’ Chess Challenge Comes to Weston By Stacey Bomser
SECTION HEAD Community News as a way to promote scholastic chess and its academic benefits. Weston is one of ten cities to host one of the free monthly challenges during which Mayors and other elected officials and community leaders from throughout Broward County take part in this friendly open competition. Mayor Stermer, Commissioner Angel Gomez and Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler have accepted the challenge and will be playing at the Weston event, while other members of the City Commission who don’t play chess will be there to support the players. “I have no illusions of grandeur here. I will likely be beat by a fifth grader and I am looking forward to it!” states Mayor Stermer. “That means our chil-

dren are learning unique skills that assist them in areas such as critical thinking.” Chief Butler, who confesses he has not played chess in years, is also looking forward to taking on worthy opponents. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is expected to draw a big crowd. Mayor Ryan says some cities have had turnouts of over 300 players. While many children, especially those in second and third grade who participate in the First Move chess program in school, participate in the event, chess players of all ages and skill levels are welcome. As a celebration of scholastic chess, the Mayors’ Chess Challenge provides an opportunity for novices, experts and all ranges in between to join in the fun. The City will supply chess boards, but players are welcome to bring their own. The Parks and Recreation Department is predicting a big turn-out for the Weston Mayors’ Chess Challenge. Not only is this the final challenge of the season, but the Passport program has become very popular. Players get their Passport stamped at each event they attend. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge started in September in Davie. Each month, a different city has hosted the event. Other participating municipalities included Sunrise, Tamarac, Lauderhill, Coral Springs, Cooper City, Wilton Manors, Hallandale Beach and Pembroke Pines. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge takes place from 10am to noon on May 7th at the Weston Community Center. For more information call 954-746-3250. Weston Art Guild Brings “Faux Famous” Exhibit Home By Stacey Bomser
D
ue to popular demand, the Weston Art Guild will be exhibiting its “Faux Famous” show at the Weston Branch Library this month, May 3rd through 30th. It premiered at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery earlier this year. “Faux Famous” features original artwork by Weston Art Guild members expressing their unique interpretations of artistic masterpieces using watercolor, acrylic, oils or mixed media. Next to each piece will be a copy of the original work the artist used as inspiration. “The patrons’ expressions and comments were ones of excitement and surprise as they went around viewing the artists’ interpretations. Patrons enjoyed the wide variety of selected works from classical to abstract,” explained Weston Art Guild President Lynda Sauls. “This added to the interest of the overall show and seemed to satisfy everyone’s unique interests so much so that we decided to display the same show again at the Weston Library.” The Weston Library exhibit will feature 32 pieces by 20 artists, including eight pieces not shown in Sunrise. In addition, People’s Choice Awards will be presented at a reception on May 10th from 6:30-7:30pm. That event
is free and the public is welcome to attend and meet these talented artists in person. Sauls says the Weston Art Guild always welcomes the opportunity to display its work within Weston as it fulfills its mission statement: “A visual arts organization with the purpose of creating a cultural atmosphere in the community.” She says the group would love to be able to display in local businesses or other public buildings to further this mission. In addition to the “Faux Famous” exhibit at the Weston Branch Library, Weston residents will have the opportunity to admire, and even purchase, art work by Weston Art Guild members later this month when it participates in an Open House at Weston Hills Country Club. That takes place on Sunday, May 22nd from noon to 8pm. In August, work by Weston Art Guild members will be featured at the Sailboat Bend Gallery in Fort Lauderdale.

eston Town Center was transformed into an open air concert hall for the Symphony of the Americas’ Symphony Classics and Best of Broadway III concert. Hundreds of music lovers of all ages attended the free outdoor concert, which featured the full symphony orchestra under the direction of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. “We are delighted to bring these outstanding musicians to Weston for the enjoyment and entertainment of our community,” states Weston Philharmonic Society President Victoria Jolson. “We are thrilled at the popularity of the Pops to all ages.” The music appealed to a diverse audience, ranging from toddlers to seniors, all sharing a mutual appreciation for the fine music. Children were dancing in the streets. One family even set up a picnic table to enjoy dinner along with the evening’s “music under the stars.” It was apropos that Music of the Night was included in the Phantom of the Opera suite, along with Think of Me, Angel of Music, All I Ask of You, and Masquerade. The concert also included selections from classic Broadway shows such as The Mikado, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Miss Saigon to contemporary productions including The Producers and Mama Mia. The orchestra also enchanted the audience with its salute to Rogers and Hammerstein, with favorites such as Whistle a Happy Tune, Some Enchanted Evening, and You’ll Never Walk Alone. This free outdoor concert is one of several concerts presented each year here in Weston by the Symphony of the Americas. In February, the orchestra performed Opera to Broadway III. That concert featured famous operas and Broadway selections performed by four internationally-acclaimed singers accompanied by the full Symphony of the Americas orchestra. This summer, select members of the orchestra will return to Weston, along with a noted international orchestra, as part of Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest. Details on that concert will be announced shortly. Symphony Classics and Best of Broadway III was presented by the City of Weston, Weston Philharmonic Society and Arts Council of Greater Weston in cooperation with Weston Town Center.

Weston Offers Operation SAFE Workshops for Seniors Community News
By Stacey Bomser

T
he City of Weston is pleased to present Operation S.A.F.E, Be Scam Smart for seniors, their families and caregivers. The free program will be offered in English on May 11th and in Spanish on May 12th. The Florida Department of Financial Services launched Operation S.A.F.E. (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) as part of Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater’s On Guard for Seniors initiative. Be Scam Smart workshops are designed to help inform, empower and protect Florida’s seniors from financial fraud and scams. According to CFO Atwater, one out of five adults age 65 or older has been the victim of a financial scam. It is estimated that seniors lose $2.9 billion each year to financial frauds and scams. Furthermore, seniors are the least likely to report fraud, often out of embarrassment or fear that they will lose independence if their loved ones find out they’ve been deceived. This is why Mr. Atwater launched a statewide financial education initiative to help Florida seniors protect their life savings. “South Florida is unfortunately an epicenter for identity theft and economic scams. Many in our own community have fallen victim to scams,” noted Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer. “Operation S.A.F.E. workshops can help you from becoming a victim. Our senior population is particularly vulnerable and we want to do all we can do to provide education which is key to prevention and protection.” The best way to protect seniors from scams and fraud is knowledge and information. By being aware of the ways scammers target consumers, seniors can spot

a scam before becoming a victim. During the Operation S.A.F.E., Be Scam Smart presentations, attendees will learn about how to spot fraudulent behavior, common scams that target seniors, how to fight identity theft, and resources to keep seniors safe. The English version will be presented by Tasha Carter. She began her career with the Department of Financial Services in 2003 and has served as Director of the Division of Consumer Services since 2011. She leads a team of over 120 professionals who assist more than 300,000 insurance consumers annually. In this role, she also spearheads education and outreach initiatives to promote financial education for all Floridians. Savannah Sullivan will present the Spanish version of the workshop. She joined the Department of Financial Services last year as a Communications Specialist. She helps create and promote financial literacy programs for the Division of Consumer Services. Operation S.A.F.E., Be Scam Smart will be offered in English on Wednesday, May 11th from 10-11am at the Bonaventure Town Center Club, 16690 Bonaventure Boulevard, in Multipurpose Room One. The Spanish language workshop will be on Thursday, May 12th, same time, same place. To learn more about Operation S.A.F.E., Be Scam Smart visit www.fldfs.com/SAFE.

Weston BSO Lieutenant Recognized for 40 Years of Service By Stacey Bomser

ieutenant William “Bill” O’Brien is a familiar face at the Weston Broward Sheriff’s Office. He has been assigned to the Weston District since 2007, but has been protecting Broward County residents for four decades. Sheriff Scott Israel recently recognized Lt. O’Brien for his 40 years of service, protecting and serving the residents of Broward County. After 40 years on the force, Lt. O’Brien says his favorite aspect of law enforcement is still “facilitating or taking persons responsible for serious crimes into custody and assisting those in need of help.” Lt. O’Brien began his law enforcement career in 1975 as a police officer in the City of Pompano Beach. He worked road patrol, tactical enforcement, and criminal investigations as a detective. While working Vice and Narcotics, he assisted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Customs Enforcement with smuggling investigations. His hard work was recognized with a promotion to

Sergeant in 1984 and then to Lieutenant in 1988. In 1999, the City of Pompano Beach Police Department merged with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Lt. O’Brien continued serving the people of Pompano Beach, but was later promoted to Watch Lt. Sam Cavalieri, Lt. Bill O’Brien, Chief Kevin Butler, Commander at the Lt. Rodney Brimlow of the BSO Weston District. Ft. Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport. Lt. O’Brien came to Weston in February 2007, where he has been Watch Commander ever since. His assignments have included Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations and member of the Community Strategies Team (CST). The City of Weston partnered with BSO to create the CST. This unique concept is an analytically driven program that directs its crime prevention and criminal apprehension activities based upon the statistics generated within the City. The hours of the CST are purposely flexible to be able to provide either a constant or forceful response to those activities that threaten Weston’s valued quality of life. Thanks, in part, to Lt. O’Brien’s efforts, Weston was named one of safest cities in the country. In February, NeighborhoodScout ranked Weston as #11 on its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. Its research revealed the 100 safest cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Weston was one of only two cities in the Florida to make the list.

housands of children scrambled to collect some of the 30,000 candy-filled eggs at this year’s Royal Egg Hunt. This event has become a timehonored tradition in our community. The free event, which was open to all children ages ten and under, took place at Weston Regional Park, where the ball fields were polka-dotted with
colored eggs. It was precious to watch as children ran around scooping up the eggs into their baskets. All eyes were on the look-out for one of the special “golden” eggs, which could be redeemed for small prizes. Following the egg hunt, families were able to capture priceless photos of their children posing with
the Royal Bunny. Kids put their excess energy from indulging in the sugary treats to good use jumping in the bounce houses. The Royal Egg Hunt was presented by the City of Weston and coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

he Rotary Club of Weston’s 29th annual WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic was a huge success. Not only did this year’s golf tournament include a record number of golfers, it far exceeded its fundraising goal. For nearly three decades, the Weston Rotary has been presenting scholarships to deserving students through funds raised from the Rotary Golf Classic. To date, the club has given more than $1 million in scholarships to graduating students from Cypress Bay and Western high schools, as well as The Sagemont School and HANDY. Rotary Golf Classic Co-Chair Michael Freedland says, “Thanks to this year’s golf tournament, more than 50 students will share in over $125,000 raised from the event.” This month, the Rotary Scholarship Committee is conducting interviews with scholarship applicants. In order to be eligible, students must have good grades combined with a solid record of community service and show a financial need. The scholarships will be awarded during the Scholarship Breakfast on June 2nd.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 05/31/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Weston University Takes Field Trip to Nation’s Capital Community News
By Stacey Bomser

A
whirlwind trip to Washington D.C. was the culminating field trip for the Weston University Class of 2016. As soon as their plane landed, the Weston U students, along with Mayor Daniel Stermer, City Commissioner Tom Kallman, City Manager John Flint, Director of Public Works Karl Thompson, Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller, and Assistant Director of Communications Pam Solomon, boarded the bus to start their tour of the nation’s capital. In less than eight hours the group toured The Capitol Building, posed for pictures in front of the White House, and visited many of the majestic memorials including the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial. Prior to the trip, students were provided with key facts about each location and its significance in history. While wandering around DC’s famed tidal basin, the group was able to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom. These trees were a gift to the United States from Japan. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. Over the course of the school year, students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in hands-on activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. “Through our curriculum we look at mainly local and state government, but also the legislative and financial impacts of the federal government, culminating with this trip to our nation’s capital,” explains Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications and Weston University Organizer. “During this trip, students are able to personally see where the legislation of our country takes place, as well as the monuments dedicated to and in honor of individuals and those who served in wars that shaped our nation.”

Weston University Students Learn Fiscal Responsibility Community News
By Stacey Bomser
T
he Weston University curriculum concluded with a lesson in fiscal responsibility. The final program day focused on local government budgeting and finance, as well as technology and agendas. Weston Budget Director Bryan Cahen spoke to students about Weston’s budget process. He explained how the budget is managed and approved by the City Commission each fiscal year, with input from residents. Cindy Tao, the City’s Accounting Manager, explained her department’s role. The students then participated in a millennial career survey, under the leadership of City Manager John Flint. After a lunch break, the Weston U students began preparing for their City Commission Simulation. It is the culminating activity to the program. Each student was assigned a role to play, with some taking on the responsibilities of the Mayor and City Commissioners, while others will play the parts of the
various City Department leaders or Police or Fire Chief. Director of Communications and Weston University Coordinator Denise BarrettMiller led a comprehensive review of the simulation agenda and took the students through each item and how their roles will play out during the meeting. “Utilizing what they have learned over the past six months, during the mock meeting students will actually debate and vote on real items brought before Weston City Commissioners in years’ past,” explains Barrett-Miller. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. Once a month, participating students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in hands-on activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. City Stresses Safety This Summer
By Representative Richard Stark
By Daniel J. Stermer, Mayor, City of Weston
J
une will mark the start of the 2016 hurricane season, which continues through November 30th. Florida has gone a record ten years without a land falling hurricane of category 3 or higher. The uncertainty of climate change minimizes the accuracy of predictions so you should remain cautious and aware. Anticipating inclement weather can help you and your loved ones stay safe and help you cope with the stress of disaster. Follow these tips to plan ahead and consider what actions to take before and during a storm.
Before a Storm
Make sure that you have enough non-perishable food and water in your home to last you and your family at least a few days. Prepare other disaster supplies such as batteries, flashlights, plastic bags, toiletries, clothing, cash and a first aid kit. Gather any important papers and secure them in plastic. Make sure to include social security cards, birth certificates, diplomas, titles or deeds to property, as well as any insurance policies. These items can be difficult and time-consuming to replace. Take video or photos of your property. This can assist later with any insurance claims for damage that may need to be filed. Prepare an evacuation route and know the location of the nearest shelter, in addition to any facilities that are able to accommodate pets, if needed. If you evacuate your home, do not leave your pets behind. Pets most likely cannot survive on their own and, if they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
Basic Disaster Supplies
A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items: ▸▸ Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation ▸▸ Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food ▸▸ Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both ▸▸ Flashlight and extra batteries ▸▸ First aid kit ▸▸ Whistle to signal for help ▸▸ Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place ▸▸ Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation ▸▸ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities ▸▸ Manual can opener for food ▸▸ Local maps ▸▸ Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
During a Storm
If you’re not within an evacuation zone and attempt to weather the storm at home, stay inside away from windows and exterior doors. Make sure to listen to your local TV and radio for any information, as the strength and course of the storm can change quickly and without notice. Do not go outside during the calm eye of the hurricane. The worst part of the storm will happen once the eye passes and the winds blow from the opposite direction. The Florida Division of Emergency Management offers a website to help Floridians create a customized Family Disaster Plan at FloridaDisaster.org/ family. This site allows each family to calculate the amount of food and water needed in the event of an emergency and gives supply checklists, provides local emergency contacts and evacuation routes. Each personalized plan includes a checklist of things to do before, during and after a disaster. Get ready Florida and be prepared! State Representative Richard Stark (D-Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at Richard.Stark@myfloridahouse.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

hallenges are what make life interesting. If you are up for a challenge, join me at the Mayors’ Chess Challenge on May 7th at the Weston Community Center between 10:00AM and 12:00 noon. All ages and skill levels are welcome – just show up and join a game. Our event concludes this year’s ten city series hosted by community leaders throughout Broward County. We look forward to a great turnout at this unique event, where you can join the Weston City Commission and even Weston’s Police Chief in a game. The introduction of chess at a young age helps children form critical thinking skills that can assist them academically and in other avenues in life. I have no doubt many of our rivals will likely be no taller than 4’ high. Another challenge, particularly in South Florida, is protection from fraud. On May 11th (English language) and May 12th (Spanish language), the City of Weston is pleased to host two Operation S.A.F.E., Be Scam Smart workshops presented by the Florida Department of Financial Services. Operation S.A.F.E., Stop Adult Financial Exploitation, workshops are designed for seniors, their family and caregivers to inform, empower and protect the elderly from financial scams and fraud, but this presentation is excellent for all adults. Learn how to spot fraudulent behavior, fight identity theft and hear about common scams targeting seniors. Both workshops will be held at 10:00AM in the Bonaventure Town Center. Visit WestonFL.org for informational flyers in both English and Spanish. Fraud and identity theft are certainly one of life’s challenges we can live without!
As students wrap up another school year, we congratulate those graduating and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. The challenge this time of year is how to keep children and teens entertained during the summer break. Many pass the time in summer camps, or with vacations and time spent enjoying the pool or ocean. Right here in Weston, the Weston YMCA, the Weston Tennis Center and numerous other facilities offer a variety of summer programming. If you’re headed out of town, we suggest the BSO HomeWatch Program. BSO will send personnel to check on your residence daily. Download the HomeWatch form on the city website. Another tip: don’t advertise you are out of town on social media. Unfortunately, it’s not only your friends who might be watching. An important reminder for all: never leave children unsupervised in or around a body of water. Designate a non-drinking adult to watch children at parties, large gatherings or on a water-related outings. Drownings are 100% preventable. Lastly, come join the parade! An annual favorite, the Weston July 4th Hometown Parade planning is underway. Be a participant or watch along the parade route – both are free and so much fun! Visit our website for details or call the Weston Community Center at 954-389-4321. Until next time… Mayor Stermer can be contacted via email at dstermer@ westonfl.org or 954-385-2000.

ummer is just around the corner. A lot of people wonder about the real estate market during this time of year and whether or not it’s a good idea to either buy, or sell your home. To start off, Weston home values have gone up 4.6% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will fall -1.6% within the next year with a median home listing price of $490,000. As I am writing this, Weston has a total of 352 single family homes listed for sale on the market. It is important to get a fix on the national picture. A number of market watchers say 2016 could see price increases slowing dramatically or even declining. Jack McCabe, a Florida-based real estate researcher, said on his website that we are already in the beginnings of a real-estate downturn. He expects to see them failing by the end of the year in many major U.S. markets. He predicts the decline won’t be as severe as seen in 2008, and he expects it to be confined to higher-end units in major markets. Still, he advises some caution.

Interest rates are likely to become another factor. As rates go up, buyers pay more to the bank, which means they’ll be able to afford less home. The Federal Reserve raised rates above zero for the first time since 2008, and many watchers predict a series of gradual increases over the course of 2016. This prediction weighs in the arguments of those forecasting declines. But there are a number of economists who don’t see a decrease in housing prices coming this year. Svenja Gudell, the chief economist at Zillow, told Reuters in December that she’s an “optimist about the market for 2016.” She notes that millennials are just starting to enter the housing market, and they’ll continue to do so in greater and greater numbers. She also points to a factor commonly cited by many who predict continued gains. There just isn’t much buildable land and new construction in the most desirable areas. People continue to move in, increasing demand, but the number of units available isn’t able to keep up, meaning the supply isn’t going up as fast as the demand. This trend tends to put upward pressure on prices. With all of this information in mind, it is always good to recognize some factors. Idle inventory and durability of a listing could determine a lot about selling your home. The medium time on the market nationally was at 72 days, up from 52 days just a few months ago. Road Rules – Stay Safe On Our Streets By Weston District Fire Chief Harris Bouchillon
A
s we get into the summer months and the end of the school year, Weston residents become even more active. People of all ages can regularly be seen bicycling, jogging, playing organized sports and enjoying our inviting weather and our abundant recreational opportunities. While outdoor activities can be enjoyable and beneficial, when these activities intersect with our roadways there are inherent risks that we must collectively work together towards minimizing. Several tragedies have recently occurred that highlight these risks and our need to mitigate them. Last month we explored safety tips for pedestrians. This month let’s review some simple road rules for cyclists and drivers to keep our streets safe.

▸▸ Bicycles are legally defined as a vehicle and have the same rights to the roadway. Cyclists must also obey the same traffic laws as drivers of motorized vehicles. ▸▸ Ride with traffic, on the right side. ▸▸ Wear a helmet! Cyclists and passengers under the age of 16 are required by law to wear a helmet. The most common and serious injury sustained by cyclists are head injuries. Wearing a helmet can greatly reduce your chances of a serious injury or death. ▸▸ Be visible! Wear bright, reflective clothing. Use lights and reflectors when riding in low-light conditions. ▸▸ Use the marked bicycle lanes and ride single file. There is a maximum of two riders side-by-side. ▸▸ Do not use headsets, headphones or any other listening device (they’re illegal) with the exception of hearing aids. ▸▸ Do not ride in and out of cars. ▸▸ Use hand signals when stopping and turning. ▸▸ Cyclists are at a greater risk of being hit by a vehicle at intersections and driveways. Most bicycle and vehicle collisions occur at these intersections when vehicles or cyclists are turning. Slow down and pay attention! ▸▸ Drivers may be looking for gaps in traffic and may not be paying attention to anything other than other vehicles. Your speed may be difficult for drivers to gauge. Keep a watchful eye out for vehicles turning in front of you.
MAY 2016 | OUR CITY WESTON
▸▸ Yield the appropriate right of way. A green light does not mean that the intersection is free from pedestrians. Wait for pedestrians to finish crossing in the crosswalk. ▸▸ Reduce your speed when approaching cyclists and pedestrians. Pass cyclists when it is safe to do so and allow at least 3 feet between the cyclist and your vehicle. ▸▸ Do not use your cellphone while driving! Distracted driving significantly impairs your ability to recognize cyclists, pedestrians and other drivers. It only takes a split second of distraction for a tragedy to occur. ▸▸ Children and novice cyclists may be unpredictable. Expect the unexpected and proceed cautiously. ▸▸ Before backing up, look carefully behind your vehicle for approaching pedestrians and cyclists, especially small children. ▸▸ Avoid irresponsible and dangerous behaviors such as speeding or racing. Follow the posted speed limits! In order to safely enjoy all of the outdoor activities our city has to offer we must work together to mitigate the risks that we face as drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. By following these simple safety tips you may prevent the next tragedy from occurring. For more information please contact District Fire Chief Harris Bouchillon at (954) 389-2015 or by email at Harris_Bouchillon@ Sheriff.Org.

Weston Residents Support Hazardous Waste Recycling Efforts SECTION HEAD Community News
By Stacey Bomser
W
eston residents are encouraged to take advantage of this month’s free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronics Collection event on May 15th. More than 900 people participated in the January collection. Thanks to these environmental efforts, nearly 28 tons of toxic or hazardous materials were collected and disposed of properly. This is significant because these products can be extremely dangerous if thrown away with the regular trash. For example, empty containers of pool chemicals can actually start a fire inside a garbage truck. For the safety of refuse workers and the environment, it is important to correctly dispose of hazardous waste, as well as electronics. The City of Weston makes that easy. “The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event is a very convenient way of properly disposing of hazardous items,” states Weston’s Director of Public Works Karl Thompson, P.E. “The process is efficient and moves rather quickly. It is staged like a drive-thru; there is never a need to get out of your vehicle. All items and materials are unloaded by the HHW team.” At the January 31st HHW and Electronics Collection event in Weston, residents disposed of 36,724 pounds of HHW. This included 26,360 pounds of latex paint, 1,220 pounds of batteries, 1,695 pounds of motor oil, 1,695 pounds of motor oil, 1,820 pounds of flammable liquids and solids, 984 pounds of aerosol cans, and 198 pounds of fire extinguishers. In addition, residents recycled 18,871 pounds of electronics such as unwanted computer monitors, CPUs, printers and televisions. Household Hazardous Waste refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: toxic, ignit-
able, corrosive, or reactive as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency. According to the EPA, the average household has as much as 100 pounds of HHW in the garage or storage. This includes items such as oil and latex paints and thinners, used motor oil, auto fluids and gasoline solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, drain

cleaners, tires, mercury thermometers, and batteries including rechargeable and automobile. In addition to household hazardous waste, the Weston event also accepts electronics items including computers, laptops, printers, cell phones, chargers, DVD and VCR players, copiers, mice and more. The following items are not accepted: stereos, speakers, microwaves, and small appliances. These can be disposed of on bulk trash days; the next one will be in July. Weston’s Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection will take place on Sunday, May 15th from 8am to 3pm at the Public Works Services Center, located on South Post Road between Manatee Isles Drive and Saddle Club Road. For more information, please call the Public Works Department at 954-3852600 or visit www.westonfl.org.
City Interns Tally Trees By Stacey Bomser
A
s a premier master-planned community, Weston is well known for its lush landscaping and tree-lined streets. To ensure the future and protection of these magnificent specimens, the City of Weston recently completed a massive Tree Inventory GIS/ GPS survey, with help from its two landscape architect interns. Ashley Maine and Katherine Jarosz are graduate students from the Florida International University Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design program. This project was a great way for the interns to put the knowledge they have gained in the classroom to practical use in the field. This tedious hands-on project involved the collection of data on every tree located on City property, this includes rights of ways like medians and swales, as well as city parks and facilities. A total of 34,584 trees were counted. The interns also captured data such as GPS location within four inch accuracy, tree height, and species information. The project did not include counting trees within residential neighborhoods. The comprehensive tree survey was conducted under the guidance of Amen Abdou, Weston’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) coordinator. Although the internship is over, Ashely is staying on to assist with further work on data collection and input for the City’s GIS system. Ashley and Katherine were recognized for their hard work during a recent City Commission meeting. Protecting the lush landscaping in our community is priority of City leaders. Here, the natural environment that surrounds and is encompassed within the city is as unique as the lifestyle. Weston borders the Florida Everglades and the City maintains over 2,200 acres of wetland preserves, supporting a diverse ecological population.

Weston Doctor to be Inducted into Broward Senior Hall of Fame By Stacey Bomser
D
r. Mohsin Jaffer is amongst the newest members of the Dr. Nan S. Hutchinson Broward Senior Hall of Fame. It recognizes senior residents for their volunteer excellence and service to senior citizens in Broward County. Dr. Jaffer will be one of ten honorees formally inducted into the Broward Senior Hall of Fame on May 6th. Dr. Jaffer is the founder, president, CEO and lead physician at Senior Medical Associates. He has dedicated his medical career, which spans more than 30 years, to the care of seniors. He is an advocate of wellness care and stresses the importance of healthy lifestyles to his patients. “I provide lectures to seniors on aging with vitality and I believe if seniors are equipped with this information on how best to take care of their bodies they would have a much better, much more vibrant life until their last day,” states Dr. Jaffer, whose practice hosts free learning and social activities for Broward’s senior community. “My mission is to positively change the health of seniors by empowering them with knowledge.” In addition, Dr. Jaffer runs a free clinic in Miami Gardens. “Located in a very underserved area, we are committed to providing medical care for anybody who doesn’t have insurance or who has nobody to care for them, and we do it free of charge. This gives me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction to be of service.” Dr. Jaffer believes in giving back to the com-
munity, especially to needy residents. He is a proud financial supporter of various senior focused organizations such as The Pantry of Broward, the Aging and Disability Resource Center, and YMCA Active Older Adults. He is committed to serving the community at large as well. Dr. Jaffer has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Weston for over a decade. He also serves various churches, synagogues and mosques across the county. Dr. Jaffer sees volunteering as a form of charity and encourages others to become active in our community. “Charity is like perfume, you can’t spread it without having a lot left in your hands. You can ask people who volunteer and we will all share that we get tremendous satisfaction from the experience; much more than the recipients themselves. It has given me great pleasure to be able to be of service to different organizations of Broward County.” Dr. Jaffer is not the first Weston resident to be inducted into the Dr. Nan S. Hutchinson Broward Senior Hall of Fame. Two years ago, Jackie Rosen, Executive Director/CEO of the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, was among the distinguished honorees selected for membership in this elite group. In 2012, Rochelle Koenig was recognized for her volunteer efforts including serving as a former president of the Arts Council of Greater Weston and founder and past president of the Weston Philharmonic Society.

Body contouring: Show off the new you. Have you lost a significant amount of weight but are still dealing with loose skin? A series of plastic surgeries called body contouring S. Alexander Earle, MD can help trim excess skin from several places on your body.
Dr. Earle discusses different areas of the body where body contouring may help.
Sometimes people believe removing extra skin after bariatric surgery or significant weight loss is a purely cosmetic procedure. But in many cases it also has a practical health purpose.
• Chest: Men and women may require breast surgery to remove extra skin from the chest. “For women, the procedure is similar to a breast lift. This may be combined with implants, if needed. For men, the plastic surgeon performs a male breast reduction procedure,” explains Dr. Earle, who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
“Body contouring can be done after weight loss to prevent rashes, discomfort and chafing,” says S. Alexander Earle, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida.
• Abdomen: Extra skin can be removed and muscles tightened with abdominoplasty. This makes the entire stomach area look better and tighter. • Thighs: A plastic surgeon can remove extra skin on thighs – depending on how heavy the thigh still is and the anatomic location of the skin.
• Upper arms: Patients often complain of deflated arms that resemble batwings.
Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.
Removing excess skin from the armpit to the elbow gives the upper arms their shape back. • Face: Stretched out skin along the neck and jawline can be removed to reveal a more healthy and youthful appearance. Body contouring is an efficient way to get rid of excess skin after your weight loss. “It can help eliminate imperfections and loose skin that diet and exercise can’t,” says Dr. Earle. Note: Not all procedures are covered by insurance. This depends on the location of the excess skin, your symptoms, and your insurance coverage.

Weston Man Serves as Walk to Cure Arthritis Adult Honoree

any people think arthritis affects people as they age. The truth is, the debilitating disease affects people of all ages. Weston’s Eric Haldimann contracted juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when he was a baby; as an adult he’s working to help find a cure. He is the 2016 Adult Honoree at the Broward Walk to Cure Arthritis, which takes place on May 14th at Nova Southeastern University. Haldimann says he is grateful for this honor because “it gives me the opportunity to reach more people with the message that ‘I have arthritis…arthritis does not have me.’ I want to motivate people to get involved, raise awareness, talk about the issues surrounding treatment and care, and show the world that we all can be Champions of Yes. This is Eric Haldimann is the 2016 Adult Honoree at the Broward Walk to Cure Arthritis. a powerful message that tells the world that, yes, people with arthritis can and do persevere to lead normal lives, despite the intense pain of arthritis.” Haldimann is living proof. Despite having arthritis for 55 years, he has developed a successful career, traveled the world, builds furniture, scuba dives and

enjoys deep sea fishing, and so much more. Much of this can be credited to his positive attitude. “In many ways I have been blessed by arthritis because it has caused me to look at the world in different ways. It has given me a greater sense of empathy and has engendered in me an increased ability to improvise and be creative,” states Haldimann. “Arthritis has taught me the importance of perseverance and commitment.” Today he is committed to helping find a cure to the disease that affects one in five Americans. “Over 50 million adults suffer from arthritis in the U.S. with over six million of those living in Florida, making it very likely that you either have arthritis yourself or know someone who does,” states Haldimann. “In addition, over 300,000 kids live every day of their lives with the pain of arthritis, and over 13,000 of them live in Florida.” He encourages his Weston neighbors to support these children and their families by taking part in the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk to Cure Arthritis. Part of the money raised sponsors a summer camp for kids with arthritis. “The goal of these camps is to put kids and families in touch with others who are enduring similar experiences and give the kids a sense of what they can do versus what they are told all the time they can’t do,” shares Haldimann. “I have volunteered at several of these camp experiences and have seen the wonder and increased self-esteem that they generate among the kids. The children often make lifetime friendships and the parents find support among their peers as well.” The Arthritis Foundation’s Walk to Cure Arthritis also raises money to support research conducted by scientists and doctors nationwide. Haldimann says researchers are developing new classes of drugs that enable people with arthritis to carry on with their lives and impact the progression of the disease. The Broward Walk to Cure Arthritis takes place on Saturday, May 14th at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. To learn more visit www.walktocurearthritis.org/broward.

here is no doubt that stress plays a major role in a person’s health, but why are most Conventional Medical Doctors oblivious to properly assessing, identifying and guiding an individual to treat and manage these stressors? We all know the saying “Stress Kills,” but how are we preventing and treating this? For nearly a century, the effects of stress on an individual’s health have been documented in many of the top medical journals. Moreover, the effects of stress can be linked to most chronic illnesses. Yet, only a small percentage of Clinicians understand how to treat this dysfunction and the intricacies of how stress affects the inner workings of our bodies. Physicians who specialize in Functional Medicine are trained to handle these stressors which affect daily living and understand the importance in achieving balance, so optimal health can be achieved.
Conditions related to chronic stress include: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Depression Panic Disorders Diabetes Central Obesity Thyroid Problems Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ▸▸ Fibromyalgia ▸▸ and much more The Physician specializing in Functional Medicine understands the bio-feedback system of the body and how stress affects a cascade of events that can lead a person to feel ill and eventually create disease if not properly managed.
TAKE THE TEST:
• When was the last time • How easy is it to get in the mood? you were in the mood? • How do you deal with • What is your quality stress in your life? & happiness in the bedroom?

orning sickness. Weight gain. Skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result can be smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Breast lift ▸▸ Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Butt lift

▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options, such as the Brazilian butt lift, as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover. ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection. Cypress Bay Computer Science Students Programmed for Success
School News
By Stacey Bomser
C
ypress Bay High School is home to many top ranked teams, both athletic and academic. Its computer programming team has had a highly successful season and even hosted the Florida High School Programming Series (FHSPS) championship. Computer Science Teacher Tiffani Slutsky encourages her students to participate in programming competitions. “Competitions give students the chance to improve their critical thinking skills while having fun and not worrying about their grades. Figuring out how to do the problem is similar to doing puzzles or solving riddles and the students are thoroughly engaged as they work on them. These competitions also promote collaboration and team work because students usually work in teams of three and each team uses one computer.” FHSPS competitions are open to any student with experience coding in Java, C++, or Python. Mrs. Slutsky says Cypress Bay typically has about 80 students participating in the online, after school competitions. There were five FHSPS competitions this year, and Cypress Bay hosted the championship. “One-hundred and twenty students from various schools in the state worked to solve as many of the eight problems as possible, as quickly as pos-
sible in four hours,” explains Mrs. Slutsky. “Cypress Bay had teams that came in 3rd, 4th and 5th place out of 40 teams.” Jalen Jiang, Alejandro Lucena and Kevin Winzey took 3rd place. Richard Liu, Robert Slutsky and Zonshen Yu won 4th place. The team of Andy Liu, Brian Lu, and Foster Sabatino came in 5th FHSPS Founder Kyle Denker with 3rd Place winners place. Alejandro Lucena, Kevin Winzey and Jalen Jang. Cypress Bay also competed at the University of Central Florida. Fifteen Cypress Bay students participated in that high school programming competition. Mrs. Slutsky says the UCF competition was fiercer than the FHSPS ones because there were more teams and the problems were harder. The Cypress Bay team of Richard Liu, Robert Slutsky and Zonshen Yu came in 2nd place out of 95 teams. Sophomore Zonshen Yu says he enjoys the camaraderie of programming competitions by being able to work with friends. “The best part of competitions is either solving questions and seeing that accepted show up, or just the competition part of it, like seeing the scoreboard and how my team measures up to others.” Junior Kevin Winzey believes competing has helped him be a better student. “It teaches me discipline. In the competition environment, time management is everything. It can cost you first place. You need to be able to properly distribute the problems among team members and find the most efficient way to solve them that has the highest payout. This is a skill that can be applied in everyday life that has greatly helped me in school.”

Positive Parenting
Can You Hear Me Now? By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed Director of Early Childhood Programs Temple Dor Dorim
T
he other day, like all other days, I rushed around the house like a madwoman. Every few minutes I’d dash to the kitchen to check on the boiling water. Not wanting to waste a minute of time, while waiting for the water to boil I rushed to start a load of laundry, quickly checked back on the progress of the water and decided I had enough time to check a backpack and make lunches for the following day. Finally the water boiled, I dumped the spaghetti and ran to fold the laundry from yesterday. Nervously looking at the clock, I knew I had so many more things to do… return calls, check emails and get my daughter
showered before bedtime. The hours between 4pm-8pm are often the most stressful hours in the day. We have come to live in a rushed world where in many families both parents work, which in turn has squeezed the time allotted in our day for scheduling appointments, getting kids to after school activities, completing homework or even doing the laundry. These daily chores traditionally having been accomplished by mom during the day are being squeezed into that short span of time between work and bedtime. We have become slaves to time management, with more to do in a day than there are hours to complete our daily lists. I don’t have the answer to this problem. If I did, I’d patent my solution and be retired by now, lying on a beach on some exotic island without my watch or a clock, time being a thing of the past. I do however have advice to share that may make you reprioritize your lists. That night, I rushed around my house trying to accomplish the impossible task of getting everything done that I thought needed to be done. My sevenyear-old kept calling to me from the living room floor to come play dollhouse with her. She whined, “MOM, did you hear me???” I continued my multitasking, putting her off, telling her just a few minutes, then a few minutes more, then again, a few minutes more. As I rushed about, I was stopped in my tracks by the disappointed look on her face. She might have asked me five times in the last half hour to join her, but it was her expression that got my attention. I left the dishes where they were and sat on the carpet. Immediately, she grew close to me like a magnet. She was all smiles as I stroked her hair and we played on the floor. I lost track of time and before I knew it was her bedtime. After I tucked her in that night, I felt fulfilled even though I hadn’t finished all the “chores” on my list. I had “reprioritized” and accomplished the most important item on the list…time spent with my child. The dishes will always need to be done, the house straightened and the clothes cleaned. No one ever dies saying they wished they had spent more time doing chores but wishing that they had spent more time with loved ones. Take heed when your child calls out to you. “Hey mom, Can you hear me now?” Yes Jessica, I heard you loud and clear.

Sagemont Students REACH for Success
School News
By Stacey Bomser

T
he Sagemont School has always been on the forefront of technology. Beginning in pre-kindergarten, children are introduced to computers with classroom iPads. By fifth grade, students are utilizing tablets. The Upper School Campus supports digital learning with a state-of-the-art wireless network promoting “anywhere, anytime learning.” The school’s mission statement further defines its commitment to the use of technology to build college readiness amongst students. That begins as early as first grade with REACH. REACH stands of Rigorous Enriched Accelerated Curriculum Hour. Each week, teachers at the Lower School Campus are given one hour designated for REACH. During this time, students work on project-based learning activities that involve designing, planning, and carrying out an extended project that produces a publicly exhibited output such as a product, publication, or presentation. “We decided to start this program as a way to facilitate cross-curricular project-based learning in the classrooms while integrating technology and promoting critical thinking,” explains Sagemont Lower School Principal Monica Vigna. “REACH hour is intended to be student centered and gives the opportunity for all our students to work on a fun hands-on assignment that involves critical thinking.” REACH promotes project-based learning, which has been proven to enhance a student’s learning experience. “Project-based learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for a long period of time to research, investigate and respond to an essential question,” notes Assistant Principal Pilar Valdes. “The students really enjoy it as they are active participants, not passive in the process of learning. The REACH projects engage their minds, allow for critical thinking, and provide real-world relevance for learning.” The Sagemont teachers guide their REACH projects based on themes throughout the school year, integrating various subject areas. For example, during the Cloudy with a Chance of Snow unit on the Arctic, first graders learned how animals live in dens to protect themselves. For their REACH project, the children used Model Magic and straws to make a 3D structure that an animal could live inside. As part of the transportation unit, first grade students made peg cars to learn about the parts of a moving vehicle. They tested the cars on different surfaces and discovered that the peg car needed an outside force to make it move. During the All Aboard unit on culture and travel, third grade students worked with a partner to plan a seven-day dream vacation. The students had to decide on a vacation spot and then determine which mode of transportation they would use to get there. Additional research was needed to plan which activities they would want to do and what sights they would want to visit while on this dream vacation. Students had to plan their meals, activities and transportation based on a budget. Ms. Vigna says one of the benefits of the REACH curriculum is that children make connections to the real world. “It requires more than just basic thinking. Students learn to take initiative and responsibility and how to solve problems and work in teams. REACH allows them to build success skills for college and the 21st century workplace.” For students like third grader Alejandra Coletti, REACH teaches new things in an interactive and fun format. “REACH teaches me more and allows me to learn new things I have never learned before. I really like that it mixes all subjects together. I also like that I can be with my friends and work with them on a fun project. I really like working collaboratively and practicing my cooperation skills.”

MakerSpace Makes Learning Fun for Indian Trace Elementary Students
School News
By Stacey Bomser
S
tudents at Indian Trace Elementary School anxiously line up outside the Media Center each morning, waiting for the doors to open to MakerSpace. New this year, MakerSpace provides students the unique opportunity to create, invent and learn. “We have students waiting at the doors at 7:20am!” boasts Media Specialist Dione Mila, who runs MakerSpace. “Kids rush to get here and get to their favorite center first. Students come in to take advantage of the various activities, use the computers to Code, check out books, and most importantly, learn something new.” To make room for MakerSpace, the school relocated its WABES-TV studio, converting the original space into a Lego room, and repurposed the Distance Learning room to accommodate the Chess Center. Through DonorsChoose, Indian Trace Elementary was able to procure Snap Circuits, Spirograph, Kinex, GoldieBlox, a Lego wall, Ozobots and a Sphero robot. Other MakerSpace activities include a table-size zen coloring station, paper airplane making station, and game tables with Boggle, Connect Four, Jenga and other games. Mrs. Mila says the Circuit Lab is one of the most popular activities. “It provides an opportunity to learn by creating. The students have made boats with propellers that work, solar powered cars, hand crank cars, buzzers, lie detectors, and so much more. They have learned to work collaboratively and solve problems as they arise.”
Once a student succeeds with a project, their picture goes on the wall. The project is also displayed in the Media Center for other students in the school to see. MakerSpace was a huge undertaking and Ms. Mila credits the fourth grade Media TOTs (Teachers of Tomorrow) for its success. “What is most impressive is that MakerSpace is student run. There are two Media TOTs for each table, two in the Lego Center, two in the Chess Center, and two in the Circuitry Center. These incredible student leaders help other students learn how to use the center and help clean up. They are respected and looked up to by the other students.” In addition to running the various stations, the Media TOTs also act as teachers, explaining how to use the new equipment. “When DonorsChoose sent us the two Ozobots, I put Camilla, who had just received her own Ozobot for her birthday, in charge of the center,” explains Ms. Mila. “She showed the other students how to code their lines so that the little robot will dance, move, and change color along the path.” Mrs. Mila says she’s overwhelmed by the positive influence MakerSpace has had on students. “They are learning by doing! Students learn more from why their tower fell, than by all their successes.” She says it gives her great joy to see how the Media Center has been transformed into a vibrant bustling center of activity with MakerSpace.

Indian Trace Third Grade Classes Create Living Museum
SECTION News School HEAD
By Stacey Bomser
S
tudents in Ms. DuCuennois’ and Mrs. Monioudis’ third grade classes at Indian Trace Elementary School had the opportunity to meet some famous figures recently. The students created a Living Museum, portraying individuals who have had a positive impact on the world. “It’s important for children to learn about people who have helped make their lives easier,” explains Katie Monioudis. “We wanted the children to be able to relate with people who have impacted our lives. If they can relate to these people, then maybe they can do amazing things to impact our future.” The children were able to express their individual interests when selecting a significant figure. Some students studied historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, and Rosa Parks, while others chose those who changed the world with technology like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Several more modern figures from sports and entertainment were also represented at the Living Museum. Students portrayed King of Pop Michael Jackson, Star Wars creator George Lucas, and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who has since gone on to do remarkable work for children with autism through his Dan Marino Foundation. After selecting their chosen person, students had to read biographies and conduct online research in order to create a scrapbook and present it to the class
in first person, while dressed as the person. The scrapbooks featured timelines, mementos, as well as photos of people and places that influenced the historical figure’s life. The Living Museum is an example of Project Based Learning, which brings learning to life. “Students find project based learning highly motivating and memorable,” notes Amy DuCuennois, explaining that it is more meaningful than book-based assignments. The project fit into the social studies and language arts curriculum as students were learning about history by reading biographies and writing about their person in the scrapbook. Through this project the students were exposed to the work and talent of many historical figures. “We felt they related to the people as humans and not just larger than life figures,” states Ms. DuCuennois. “Now when asked to select a biography, the children recall the figures their peers presented and can quickly name a person they would like to learn more about.” In addition to the Living Museum, students in Ms. DuCuennois’ and Mrs. Monioudis’ classes performed patriotic songs for their families and the other third grade classes.
Temple Dor Dorim Preschoolers Are on the Right Track to Healthy Living By Stacey Bomser
T
wice a week, children enrolled in Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center run laps around the school. As part of the preschool’s “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds” initiative, it has joined the New York Road Runners Club’s Mighty Milers. The running program for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade is designed to get kids moving and prevent obesity and illness, while building self-esteem and teaching children to make and reach personal goals. “We know children learn better when they eat right and exercise,” states TDD ECC Director Jodi Cohen. “Aside from helping to combat childhood obesity, which is on the rise, we know in order for children to academically succeed at their maximum potential they need to feel good. Feeling good in body, translates to feeling good in mind.” Understanding that children develop lifelong habits at an early age, Mrs. Cohen says the idea behind “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds” was to teach children health education, moderation and being active as a key to a successful future. “Rather than have to battle health issues as they get older, we are giving

them the tools and the knowledge that a healthier way of life leads to a healthier future.” On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Mrs. Cohen, an avid runner herself, leads the children in a series of warm-up stretches followed by laps around the parking lot. Two laps equals a quarter-mile. The students are encouraged to run as many laps as they can in effort to meet their individual goal. “Our four and five-year-old students set goals to run a total number of laps by year end to equal the distance of a marathon or half-marathon,” explains Mrs. Cohen. “Our three and four-year-olds set goals of a 10K or half-marathon.” Mrs. Cohen says running is a great sport for young children. “It’s a sport that all children can participate in, that can be accommodated for all ability levels, and requires no additional equipment aside from socks and sneakers. What other sport is like that? Learning to walk, then run, is a healthy part of development.” The Mighty Milers program complements the school’s health education curriculum. In conjunction with the USDA’s My Healthy Plate initiative, daily lesson plans incorporate nutrition education. For example, children learn about the different food groups through song and puppets. In addition, Mrs. Cohen’s weekly Director’s Note to parents includes a section called “Healthy Bites”, which serves as a resource with articles on child nutrition, strategies for picky eaters, family meal ideas, etc. The school also made big changes to its lunch program, incorporating organic and all natural options where possible and exposing children to new fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins introduced in a creative, kid-friendly way to appeal to the palates of preschool children.

Should I Have My Child’s Wisdom Teeth Extracted? By Dr. Alon Grosman
Ask the expert
S
hould I Have My Child’s Wisdom Teeth Extracted? This is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for 2 years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to avoid extracting the Third Molars (AKA Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting the following criteria: completely erupted and non-impacted, completely functional, painless, free of decay, disease-free, capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old.
Trujillo Medical Center What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and the developmental stage of the Third Molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The Third Molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and sometimes even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12 year molars, I will refer for evaluation prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the Third Molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long term night time wear of the retainer even if the Third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the Third molars is the most well known, but not the only factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Get Ready for Summer with Lipotropic Injections and Mesolift By Dr. Monique Bain
O
besity affects more than half of United States citizens, reports emedicinehealth. com, and the results of this major health issue are apparent. Finding plausible solutions to losing weight can be difficult with all the fad diets ready to take advantage of a group desperately seeking results. Many have struggled with weight gain over the years and recently we found a great product with long lasting results: Lipotropic B-Vitamin Injections. These injections, combined with diet and exercise, have incredible effects. First month of taking the twice-weekly injections (best if done every three days), you can lose ten to 20 pounds. Your energy is through the roof and you will feel motivated to lose much more. Lipotropic injections are a concoction of essential amino acids choline, methionine, and inositol combined with vitamins B6 and B12. This combination of amino acids and vitamins has so many benefits for the body. Choline, an essential nutrient, actively reduces fat in the liver, decreasing chances of heart disease. Methionine, an amino acid responsible for lowering cholesterol and fat reduction in the body, is not produced in our bodies. Inositol is responsible for metabolizing fats and helping transfer those fats to the bloodstream. Inositol also regulates serotonin and insulin in our bodies; this increases mood and decreases hunger. Vitamins B6 and B12 are added to elevate mood, to assist in lipid metabolism, and to increase energy. Mesolift is a type of mesotherapy that is a safe, natural alternative to invasive cosmetic procedures. The Mesolift process delivers vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly into the skin to nourish and rejuvenate, promote production of collagen and elastin, and stimulate your metabolism. As your skin ages, circulation decreases, and the resulting reduction of oxygen and nutrients hinders your body’s ability to flush out toxins. This is what drives premature aging and causes the skin to develop an ashen appearance. The mesolift approach treats aging, sagging, sun damaged skin as well as wrinkles in the face and neck. Mesolift helps to remove free radical damage and tighten loose skin. The effects rejuvenate the face, eyelids, neck without the unnatural appearance and painful recovery of surgical alternatives. After treatment, patients commonly describe their skin as looking rested, radiant, glowing and firmer. Mesotherapy can be used as a supplement, or an alternative, to many anti-aging regimens, including botox, laser resurfacing, peels, antioxidants, topical creams and facelifts. Mesolift is not indicated for patients prone to keloid, history of strokes, severe heart disease, history of severe bleeding disorder or history of recent cancer. These procedures are great for any men or women who want to reduce the look of wrinkles on the neck and face or drop weight. It is simple, quick and virtually painless with no recovery time. Monique Bain, L.Ac, Dipl.Ac. graduated from the Academy of Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, with her degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and is Nationally Board Certified in Acupuncture. Five Element Wellness Center is located at 17150 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1, in Weston and at 7310 West McNab Road, Suite 107, in Tamarac. Impingement Syndromes in Dancers Ask the Expert
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. In some cases the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment. Carlo A. Stretch, Stretch, Stretch By Dr. Behar and Dr. Browner
I
t’s that time again. If you are like many people, this means it is time to pull out the shorts, dust off the sneakers and transform that flacid body into a lean, mean running machine. If, however, you are like many more people, this noble goal is short-lived, sidelined by the all-too-common overuse injuries that can plague joggers and runners starting back after a period of inactivity. Three of the most common overuse injuries associated with running are shin splints, Achilles tendonosis and pain around or behind the kneecap, referred to as patellofemoral stress syndrome. All three develop as a result of repetitive abnormal stresses applied over a long period of time. These abnormal stresses can be simply doing too much, too hard, too soon, or they may be associated with specific muscle or joint deficiencies, incorrect biomechanics, postural faults or other musculoskeletal imbalances. The good news is, as a general rule, all three of these overuse injuries usually respond well to self-treatment: Shin Splints: Recommended self-treatment includes regular and frequent ice massage, reduction in mileage and avoidance of hills and hard surfaces. Shin splints associated with overpronation is ultimately best managed with orthotics. Calf and Achilles tendon stretching is important in rehabilitation, as is general ankle and foot mobility. New shoes that provide adequate cushioning, support and motion control should be considered.
Achilles Tendonosis: Self-treatment is nearly identical to that for shin splints, with the addition of heel lifts during the acute phase. Ice, mileage and pace reduction, and flat terrain are imperative when acute. Orthotics and new shoes should also be considered. Calf muscle stretching must be gentle, controlled and frequent, and only after the acute inflammation has subsided. Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome: Popularly known as “runner’s knee” or chondromalacia. This is frequently the result of (1) poor running mechanics associated with overpronation, or (2) muscular imbalances between the quadriceps and hamstrings or between the medial and lateral quadricep muscles. Recommended self-treatment includes rest and ice when acute, followed by correction of faulty biomechanics and specific stretch/strength exercises. Key muscle groups to stretch are the quadriceps, hip flexors, hamstrings, popliteus (back of the knee) and iliotibial band. Many common running injuries can be traced to abnormal stresses caused by postural faults and problems with pelvic and spinal alignment. For example, a pelvis that is rotated back on one side will cause the opposite foot to overpronate. Treatment, then, must be directed at improving this postural distortion before the pronation problem can be corrected. A chiropractor specializes in the detection and correction of such problems. For guidance on best treatment of running injuries, including self-treatment and specific stretch/strength exercises, call Dr. Rick Behar and Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

oga is a phenomenal, fun way to improve one’s mental, emotional and physical health no matter what age, size or ability. Yoga has various postures named after animal forms such as Cobra, Cat/Cow, Camel and Rabbit, to name a few. Each of these postures resembles the animal it describes, and each helps with aligning, stretching and strengthening of the spine. In addition to bringing a smile to your face when you think of the poses’ names, once you do them, your mind is occupied with focusing on the postures, thereby negating other thoughts you may have at this time. This temporary clearing of thoughts, even for a few moments, is highly effective at calming the mind and bringing in peace. As we get older, we gradually do not have as much time to “play”. Yoga gives us the chance to go back to our childhoods; we sit on the floor, and sometimes stand on our hands or our heads. These seemingly trivial postures are not simply horse-play. These postures such as easy seated position, head stand, shoulder all have real physical benefits for our bodies. When we sit on the floor, we are opening our hips. When we stand on our heads or go into shoulder stand we are reversing gravity. Inversions (having the heart higher than the head) are said to be helpful in reversing blood and lymph flow, improving heart function and the immune system.

Yoga is a low to no impact form of exercise, making it beneficial for those with joint or bone pain. Many yoga postures require you to support your own body weight in new ways, including balancing on one leg such as in Tree Pose or supporting yourself with your arms in Downward Facing Dog, which helps increase arm and leg strength. Through experience and research, it is clear that yoga increases strength and muscle tone, giving those who choose to practice increased lean, long muscles. Breath awareness and various breathing techniques within the yoga practice help increase lung capacity, clear nasal passages and even calm the central nervous system, which has both physical and mental benefits. Overall, yoga is an effective and deeply enjoyable way to strengthen, connect and soothe the body and mind leaving you feeling more positive and relaxed. Fitness, flexibility and fun. This is yoga. Orthokeratology By Dr. Jane Therrien
O
rthokeratology, or OrthoK, is a sophisticated, nonsurgical process using specially designed contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea (the front layer of the eye) while you sleep. When you wake up, you remove the lenses and are able to go throughout the day without the use of glasses or contact lenses. OrthoK is designed for people with low to moderate amounts of nearsightedness. It works best in people who have refractive errors between -1.00 and -4.00. However, results vary from person to person. Patients who have corneal diseases or irregular corneal shape are not good candidates for this procedure. The first step to finding out whether you are a good candidate is a comprehensive eye exam. This will include a full visual exam, ocular health exam, and corneal shape evaluation. If you are a good candidate, lenses will be ordered based on measurements taken from something called a corneal topographer. The topographer is able to take thousands of measurements of the cornea allowing for a lens to be made that is custom fit for you. Once the lens is complete, you will then return for a dispensing visit during which the lens fit is evaluated and you will be taught how to insert, remove, and how to clean and disinfect the lenses.

Unlike Lasik, there are no age restrictions for Orthokeratology. OrthoK can be a great option for adolescents and teenagers who want to see well and have the freedom to not wear glasses and contact lenses during the day. Orthokeratology is also great for people who have active lifestyles or play sports. How long does it take for orthokeratology to work? Most patients have rapid improvement within the first night of treatment and achieve nearly perfect vision within a few days to a week. However, the length of time for Orthokeratology to work depends on your initial refractive error, corneal shape, and corneal tissue. Are there any risks involved with orthokeratology? The risks of orthokeratology are minimal, and are similar to those of soft contact lenses. All potential complications are minimized when practicing proper cleaning and wearing procedures. If you take care of your lenses as prescribed, the lenses can last around two years. However, if the lenses are not maintained properly or your prescription changes, you may have to replace them more frequently. A back-up pair of glasses is usually recommended. If you lose or damage a lens, a replacement can be purchased. Dr. Therrien is an experienced Orthokeratologist and member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control. For a consultation or more information, you can reach her at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, 954-8889393. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

Unrealistic Expectations? Legally Speaking
By Evan Baron
2015 2016 bestof bestof weston weston
W
hy do some cases seem to settle so effortlessly and others seem to be a constant battle? There are a number of reasons why this seems to occur. The most common reason is that either one or both of the parties have entered the negotiations with unrealistic expectations. They think that they are entitled to more than the law will provide. This is especially difficult for someone to accept when they feel they have been wronged by the other party and there should be some punishment handed down to compensate him or her. This, however, is a no fault state. For the most part, someone’s wrongdoing or perceived wrongdoing is never taken into consideration. Why do people have unrealistic expectations? It could be based upon a number of different factors. The most common reason is that some people are thinking emotionally. It becomes difficult to grasp certain legal concepts when someone is either very mad or very angry. The law as it is explained to them doesn’t seem fair, so they want to continue the battle. Sometimes they are correct - the law is not always fair. It is, however, the law. You can, for the most part, be assured that a judge will follow the law in ruling in your case. Sometimes a person can be influenced by either friends or family members who don’t understand the law but attempt to advise a person nonetheless. I am often amazed how some individuals will give more credibility to advice given by a neighbor down the street than an attorney they are paying money to for his/her advice. Sometimes, unfortunately, people want to hear only what they want to hear.

Individuals who are contemplating a divorce often research the internet and suddenly become “experts.” There are many on line sites that are educational and can assist in understanding the process. There are, however, many sites that have incorrect information and can distort a person’s expectations. It is also important to remember that each state has different laws and, therefore, if you are researching laws in North Carolina, it may not have anything to do with what you can anticipate in Florida. The most important thing to remember is that negotiations to reach a successful settlement require some “give and take.” Nobody will settle for “their worst day in court.” That certainly is how attorneys weigh the value of a settlement offer. If the offer is worse than what you might expect from a judge, then there is really no reason to settle. If however, both parties understand that a settlement means giving up something to receive something, and they can put aside their emotions, a settlement should be able to be reached. It is important to remember, just like it takes two to tango, it takes two reasonable people to settle a case. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

ecause alcohol is a legal substance that has become such an integral part of our society’s normal social behavior among adults, it may not always be easy to tell when recreational drinking has become a problem. By learning to recognize the signs of alcohol abuse and dependence, you can help yourself or a loved one seek help. Alcohol abuse and/or dependence does require a personal commitment to treatment which can be monumental in the healing process. Read on to learn more about the red flags to look out for when it comes to alcohol abuse and dependency.
Harmful Drinking Habits
Having a drink among friends or enjoying the occasional glass of wine with dinner is generally nothing to worry about. It can, however, be easy to let drinking get out of hand with the following harmful practices that might alert you or a loved one that something is wrong. ▸▸ Binge Drinking – Binge drinking is common among young adults who may not know their limits or recognize the potential dangers of drinking large quantities of alcohol within a short period. Individuals who do engage in binge drinking may frequently black out while drinking, meaning that they may not even remember what happened while intoxicated. Two or more episodes of binge drinking within six months constitutes a drinking problem. ▸▸ Solo Drinking – Non-social drinking is generally considered problematic, particularly when a person tries to hide their drinking or relies on drinking to solve problems or relieve stress. When an individual feels the need to drink first thing in the morning or stay intoxicated for an extended period, this is a sign of alcohol dependency, which will require withdrawal in a medical environment. ▸▸ Reckless Behavior While Drinking – It is not just drinking itself that may be harmful. Often, alcohol abuse will lead to other dangerous behaviors, such as drinking and driving or participating in unprotected sexual activity while under the influence.
Signs of Alcohol Dependency and Abuse
Aside from the pattern of drinking that an individual develops, there are some critical signs that can point to alcohol abuse and dependency. ▸▸ Personal and professional problems – these include missing work or classes because someone is too hung over to attend. These behaviors are likely to develop as a result of alcohol abuse, and drinking will continue regardless of negative consequences. ▸▸ Health issues – elevated liver enzymes, impaired functioning, trouble sleeping, unexplained anxiety and chromic depression also stem from alcohol abuse. If these signs and symptoms are familiar to you or your loved one, seek help for alcohol abuse and/or other types of addictions and substance abuse. Contact Alina Gastesi-de Armas, the Clinical Director at A Bridge to Growth at 954-880-3232. We will provide the support you need.

P
laying golf on a windy day is one of the most chalDean Sklar, PGA lenging events you will face. Wind is unpredictable and that means you have to be on top of it from start to finish. Golf professionals know how to handle windy days, but there is nothing they do that you cannot do as well. Here are some tips on how to handle playing in windy conditions: Tip 1: It is important to check the wind direction and velocity for every shot, not just every hole. It is surprising how the wind can change from one shot to the next, and you need to be prepared for those changes. A good way to check is to look up at the tree tops or at the flag (if it is close). Throwing a few blades of grass into the air will is usually the best method. Tip 2: If the wind is blowing directly at you (directly in your face), resist the temptation to adjust your target line. For shots made into a crosswind, adjustments to the target have to be made. This will depend on the force of the wind as well as your tempo. If you can play a fade or a draw to help get your golf ball through the wind, then try those first. When the wind is directly at you, I tend to use two extra clubs from say a 7 iron to a 5 iron and swing easier to compensate, plus play the ball a little further back in my stance than usual. Tip 3: If you can see that the wind is higher up (by looking at the tree tops), tee your ball lower than usual. You may need to tee down as much as an extra one-half inch or so. This will help keep the ball lower in its trajectory. Tip 4: This tip is simple but often overlooked. If playing in strong wind or wind that suddenly gusts, widen your address stance a bit to help increase your stability. This can really help, but do not go overboard on this one. Tip 5: When you are hitting into a strong gust, try to not “power” swing your way through the shot. This often means using more club than you would for a particular shot. Tip 6: When hitting with the wind at your back, your ball will travel farther if it catches the wind. To compensate for this, use your normal club for the shot but choke down on the grip. Start with one-half inch lower and adjust as you need. Tip 7: Use your less lofted clubs to help keep the ball low. A low-flying ball is often the only real option you have on very windy days. This can be especially useful if you play on fairways that have trees on either side, as these trees may act as a buffer against the lowest winds. Tip 8: Wind can affect your short game too. Windy days are prefect for using your low-trajectory, pitch and run shots. Try to keep the ball low, regardless of your shot selection, when playing near greens that are exposed to the wind or close to water hazards. Practicing these shots on the practice range will make you feel more confident when there are windy conditions on the range as well. Exercising Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
Your wish is Command. Start thinking about Bridal Showers and Communions for the Spring.
Pet Care
E
xercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.
Needs and Precautions
Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a six- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy or rest. Consult your veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

MAY 2016 | OUR CITY WESTON
Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog’s instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs: ▸▸ Walking or jogging ▸▸ Fetch ▸▸ Playing with other pets ▸▸ Running off leash ▸▸ Swimming (great for arthritic dogs) ▸▸ Tricks for low-calorie treats ▸▸ Tug of war if appropriate for your breed You can help your dog get plenty of exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, ten- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.
Low-Calorie Dog Treats
▸▸ Apple slices ▸▸ Banana slices ▸▸ Carrot slices ▸▸ Commercial dog treats (low-calorie or formulated for a smaller dog) ▸▸ Green beans ▸▸ Lean meat (cooked) ▸▸ Popcorn (without butter or oil) ▸▸ Unflavored rice cake pieces If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian about which treats are safe and appropriate. Do not feed your dog (or cat) grapes or raisins because they have reportedly caused kidney problems in pets. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On.” Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. Enjoy a Taste of Italy at Vignetos Italian Grill By Stacey Bomser
S Dining Out
avor the flavors of Italy without leaving Weston. For almost 15 years, Vignetos Italian Grill has been serving traditional Italian dishes in a family-friendly atmosphere.
Owner Michael Castiglione says eating at Vignetos is the same as eating at your Italian grandmother’s house on a Sunday afternoon – diners will enjoy real homemade Italian delights. He shares more about the restaurant and what diners can expect.
What are Vignetos’ specialty dishes?
We offer a variety of menu items to choose from depending what a guest is in the mood for. Here is a glimpse of a few of our best sellers: Sicilian Eggplant Fries, Joe’s Pesto Pasta, Chicken Ciccio, Penne Sole Mio, Baked Penne Siciliano, Wild Salmon Picattastyle, Seafood Risotto and our homemade Tiramisu.
What is special about your staff? After 15 years of oper-
ating the Vignetos Weston establishment, one of the most frequently heard compliments I receive is on our great staff. It brings a smile to my face when I have a guest approach me and ask where I get such great people. I truly feel lucky to have the team that I have. My staff is always attentive to the guests’ needs; very friendly, polite and helpful when offering suggestions. We strive every day to give exceptional customer service as it is always about the little things that ensure a guest has a wonderful dining experience.
Do you offer catering? We offer take-out and

catering.
Known for serving generous portions of classic Italian favorites, Vignetos provides authentic family recipes and weekly specials, in a modern, yet casual setting. Perfect for a family night out or a date night; Vignetos delights.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Vignetos? Not only is
Vignetos the perfect place to enjoy great Italian food with your family and friends, but it is also an exceptional place to make new ones.
What can diners expect to find when they visit the restaurant? A night at
Vignetos Italian Grill is located in the Indian Trace Shopping Center at 1342 SW 160th Avenue, next to AMC Weston 8 cinema. To learn more about the restaurant or to see the lunch or dinner menu, visit www.vignetosweston.com. For more information call 954-660-0470.
Vignetos expands one’s experience of Italian and Sicilian cooking from family recipes and favorites of our own creation with a twist, along with daily unique specials. Included within the recent renovation of the restaurant, the bar area has been redone to offer a wide variety of wine selections, as well as draft beers.
How would you describe the décor and atmosphere? Our Italian concept
has significantly changed to coincide with our sister restaurant in Plantation. Our Weston location now reflects a more modern, elegant and comfortable setting. Our booths are now roomier with tall backs which provide a little more privacy without leaving you feeling isolated. The walls now showcase some beautiful black and white photographs of various famous sites from my visit to Rome, Florence, Pisa and Venice over the years. The color scheme is vibrant but coordinated with the richness of dark mahogany walls. Our atmosphere is one of pleasant simple

elegance, but yet not at all intimidating. It’s cozy and friendly. Even during the busy times when the restaurant is “lively” with conversations, it’s never so loud that you can’t hear yourself talking. Our goal is to have our guests feel like they are eating at home away from home
