Take Stock in What is Important this New Year BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
I
n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Break Bread with Neighbors at The Longest Table BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
here’s never a doubt that Mayor Wayne Messam wants Miramar to be one of the best cities in the nation. His efforts to engage with the public are ceaseless from his morning runs to his outstanding Aviation Expo. However, this new year, Miramar’s determined mayor has a resolution of his own. He wants to provide even more opportunities for the community to come together. “I believe our city has the most amazing residents. I have met many of you and I want you all to meet one another too. That is why I’m introducing “The Longest Table” to Miramar to bring us closer together,” announced Mayor Messam. The new event hosted by the mayor’s office is designed to promote unity and a sense of “place” in the City of Miramar over a delicious dinner under the stars. The event will be held Sunday, January 26, 2020, outside of City Hall in the Town Center Plaza. Neighbors, friends, family, and coworkers are all invited to be a part of a discussion held in what will be the longest dinner table ever assembled in Miramar. The Longest Table was founded in November 2016 in Jacksonville to foster conversation and build relationships across economic, racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds and has since popped up in cities everywhere. Each year, the
event continues to draw record crowds for an open-air meal. Dozens of dignitaries, from elected officials to business and religious leaders have attended the dinners to introduce residents to people from neighborhoods across town and even across the street in a unique setting to have meaningful conversations. Mayor Messam wants his community to participate just the same as a way to connect and inspire relationships in a public platform. The hopes are to break barriers, engage in conversation, create new partnerships, and most importantly, get to know thy neighbor and make new friends. Therefore, making the city an even better place to live, work, and play. “I highly encourage residents to not only attend but to invite a guest. These get to know your neighbor conversations will be informal and fun. This event has been a hit in other communities and with Miramar’s diverse population, I know we can be successful as well. Let’s use this time to have an open forum in the City of Miramar so that everyone can feel welcome as they should be, right here in the city,” added Mayor Messam. The Longest Table will be held Sunday, January 26, 2020, outside of City Hall in the Town Center Plaza. To be notified of the registration date for this event please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov.

etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.
The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue
thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. A Better Way to Commute This new, premium transit service is designed to get commuters from western Broward County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade

County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40 am with continual buses running until 9:40 am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45 pm, with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20 pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24 pm. Broward County Transit Senior Planner Tara Crawford says, “The 75 Express Bus gives you a comfortable, stress-free and easy connection to the Miami International Airport via
the Miami Airport Station, with connections to the Civic Center and Downtown Miami/Brickell.” Transfers via Miami Dade Transit buses and Metro Rail trains make it easy to get around the Miami metro area. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595, and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute.
75 EXPRESS BUS
Starting Instead of paying a toll, or relatively higher tolls (typically during high-traffic times), 75 Express Bus riders can now enjoy the time-saving benefits of the express lanes at no additional cost. Free Service The 75 Express Bus will be free for all riders during
its first week of service, from January 13th to January 17th. Simply show up at the BB&T Center or Miami Gardens park and ride lot and hop on the Express Bus free of charge. For additional opportunities to ride for free after the trial period has ended, go to www.TryTransitFree.com.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Joy to the City of Miramar BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or the past 18 years, The Miramar Fire Department (MFD) has partnered with NBC 6/Telemundo 51 to host the “Caravan of Joy”. The eagerly anticipated annual toy drive was successful as always. Although we love our gorgeous South Florida weather, Fire Station 84 was transformed into a winter wonderland where Santa’s elves (Miramar firefighters) scurried around collecting donated toys. “Our teaming up with NBC 6/ Telemundo 51has been a great partnership throughout the years. Working together, we have been able to help those in our community who need a little extra help, have gifts during the holidays,” exclaimed Deputy Chief Erik Dodge. Throughout the day, an abundance of toys was dropped off from the community. Additionally, local celebrities, choirs, and sports mascots made appearances to add to the festivities. Both NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 did live news feeds at the holidaythemed station. The day cumulated with the arrival of the big man in the red suit on a big red fire truck.
However, the donations and festivities did not end there. They continued up until December’s signature holiday since the MFD placed collection receptacles in several neighborhood schools and businesses. “I’m honored to have been able to participate in this event for the last 15 years. ‘Tis the season as it always brings joy to all of us here at Miramar Fire-Rescue to bring smiles and hope to those in our community,” said Firefighter/ Paramedic Gina Hudson. The ambitious department members collected, compiled, and sorted their collection and sent toys to families in need, local charities such as Sheridan House, homeless shelters, and an orphanage in Haiti. But on Christmas Eve, these dedicated individuals
left their own families for a bit to distribute more wrapped goodies to the pediatric units at both Memorial West and Memorial Miramar hospitals with hopes to bring smiles to those children who unfortunately had to spend their holiday away from their homes. “NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 have had a longstanding commitment to serve our community. Our partnership with the Miramar Fire Department for close to two decades has been not only instrumental to our efforts but a wonderful synergy as we know they share the same community outreach commitment and passion. We simply couldn’t do what we do, as well as we do it, without them,” added Claudia Keppinger, Community Relations, PR & Programming Manager.

COMMUNITY NEWS
It’s Electric! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Miramar recently took advantage of the Driving on Sunshine roadshow offered by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE). The program’s goal is to empower individuals and communities across the Sunshine State to transition to clean, electric transportation while creating awareness and educating the public at the same time. During SACE’s research, they discovered that Floridians had plenty of questions and a variety of misconceptions about driving electric vehicles. This prompted them to literally take their show on the road by going across the state of Florida to offer free rides in their electric vehicles. There’s no better way to learn about something new than by driving one yourself. The roadshow promotes driving electric
through personal, hands-on driving experiences. Electric vehicles pave the way for clean transportation and clean energy future. An electric vehicle reduces the need for gasoline and reduces carbon emissions therefore, reducing pollution which preserves our planet and our health. Although these important items are being reduced, consumers will have an increase in their wallets. It has been noted that this is the best possible solution for the environment and public health since it eliminates the need for any form of dirty fossil fuels. “The SACE believes that electric vehicles are a key part of the puzzle for reducing emissions that
contribute to climate change, lowering overall cost of ownership and operation of vehicles, and bringing together clean energy sources like solar to power our transportation sector, in order to reduce the need for high-risk energy sources like offshore drilling,” explained SACE’s Dory Larsen. “Through our campaign, ‘Driving on Sunshine’, we are providing the opportunity for individuals to experience an electric car in order to demonstrate why electric vehicles save money, protect public health, and preserve our planet.” City of Miramar employees had the opportunity to test drive a Nissan LEAF hatchback and a customwrapped Tesla Model X. The City is also proud to announce that they are electrifying its fleet by bringing in eight electric vehicles so they can do their part to save, protect, and preserve the planet and public health. To learn more about driving electric and other local events, please visit drivingonsunshine.org.

ASK THE EXPERT
Impingement Syndromes in Dancers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely is an open procedure needed.
Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining which can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of antiinflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain ankle
mobility without discomfort. In other cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with a full return to dancing with proper treatment. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. The Annual Ballin’ for Unity Game Was a Slam Dunk BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
hree years ago, the first “Ballin’ for Unity” tournament was a slam dunk, so it was only natural to continue the tradition of taking it to the courts. The annual basketball game involves students at the Henry D. Perry Education Center shooting hoops with Miramar’s “Best in Blue” in an effort to develop positive relationships between teens and local law enforcement. “Our students enjoy the annual event organized by SRO Herrera. Not only does the event allow players to engage directly with members of law enforcement, the entire student population benefits from the positive sportsmanship on display. This similar event helps students to connect with law enforcement in a positive, respect-
ful, and non-threatening manner. They learn that we truly are a community that cares,” said Principal Bardetta Haygood. The idea was inspired by School Resource Officer (SRO) Daniel Herrera. The Henry D. Perry Education Center is an alternative school where students come to recover credits, and/or because of disciplinary issues at their home school. Knowing that the student body generally does not have a positive reaction toward law enforcement sparked the determined officer to build a positive rapport and to get to know the students on a personal level despite their beliefs. “As a former Broward County School teacher, I understand how important positive role models can be for students, especially those with more hardships in their past than most, as is the case here at the Henry D. Perry Education Center,” explained Herrera. “There is a constant new group of students for me to build a relationship with and it’s really rewarding when these new
students tell me they heard I’m ‘pretty cool’. Word of mouth is an incredible tool and the positive interactions with me, and these students grow with every student that comes and goes from this school.” The basketball game allows students to see officers out of uniform as “regular people” that they can engage, ask questions, and learn from. This type of approach offered a new perspective and a worthwhile experience and has become an anticipated sporting event at the school. “Great game and energy from everyone on the court and in the
crowd,” exclaimed Lauren Bluhm, Head Basketball Coach. “Every year because of this event, this positive interaction is on full display with this popular basketball game. The players may change from year to year, but the mutual respect displayed for one another via basketball opens the doors for relationships that will last a lifetime. It’s always great to see the other officers interacting with the players as well. This year Miramar PD took their first loss (58-50), but both teams already can’t wait to do it again next year. Miramar has a loss to avenge!” added Herrera.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
It’s a New Decade Miramar! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR
H
appy New Year Neighbors and welcome to a new decade! We are truly blessed to see another year! I know many of you take this time a year to resolve on new commitments and set goals to accomplish for the upcoming year. The Longest Table One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to provide even more opportunities to bring the community together. I believe our city has the most amazing residents. I have met many of you and I want you all to meet one another too. That is why I’m introducing “The Longest Table” to Miramar to bring us closer together. “The Longest Table” is designed to promote unity and a sense of “place” here in The City of Miramar over a delicious dinner under the stars with neighbors. The event will be held Sunday, January 26, 2020, outside of City Hall in the Town Center Plaza with our neighbors, friends, family, and coworkers. This will be a great discussion held in what will be the longest dinner table ever assembled in Miramar. To be notified of the registration date for this event please email elaroche@ miramarfl.gov. Back by Popular Demand: Mayor’s Chess Challenge Calling all Kings, Queens, Bishops, Knights and more…The “Mayor’s Chess Challenge” is set to take place on February 22, 2020, at Vizcaya Park. Come join other like-minded players in both friendly and competitive chess matches. Kids of all ages are welcome to attend as well as adults. Put your brain to the test in one of the world’s oldest games of strategy and mental agility. You can get more information by contacting the Mayor’s office via email at elaroche@ miramarfl.gov. Come Run with Us! No matter if you walk, run, or something in between we would love to have you come out and join runners from all over South Florida on March 7th, 2020, as they compete in this year’s 5K. After the race, enjoy cooking demonstrations, free health screenings, Zumba, bodybuilding demonstrations and learn helpful tips about nutrition. The more proactive you are, the more your body will thank you later. Running is a great way to not only get in shape but stay in shape too. Even if you have to take breaks in between, it’s all about finishing something you start! Let’s do this together, and get #MiramarFit As we start this new chapter of our lives together, we’re reminded of all our great memories of the past. Never forget them and let’s learn from any missed opportunities. Always remember to cherish one another and be the change you want to see in the world around you. THE WORLD’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE™ Anna Maria Georgiadis left her hometown of Miramar for a visit to Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma. Although the “not your ordinary small town” is the 63rd-largest city in the Sooner state, it offers plenty of art galleries, museums, and tourist attractions. Visitors love the Toy and Action Figure Museum, the historic Santa Fe Depot Museum, and most definitely Field’s Pecan Pie Factory. A souvenir snapshot with Our City Miramar was also a must on Georgiadis’ to-do list.

lthough we do not get too many cold days and nights here in sunny South Florida, January is usually the coldest month of the year for us and we have to be prepared to stay safe and warm. Therefore, Miramar Fire Rescue would like to remind you of the “P’s”… Protect People - Being in the cold weather for long periods of time can be dangerous if you are not properly prepared, especially for seniors and children. Remember to dress in loose-fitting warm layers if you will be outdoors for long periods of time. Don’t forget that hat! 40 percent of body heat is lost through the head. Protect Plants - Here in South Florida we have a variety of beautiful tropical plants, but they do not do well in cold temperatures. Make sure to bring them inside or to cover them up with sheets, tarps, or blankets to keep them from freezing. Protect Pets - Remember our furry family members, they get cold too. Like us, they have acclimated to warmer temperatures, so they too struggle with cold weather unlike their counterparts from up north. Please bring your pets indoors and if this isn’t possible, provide them with an enclosed warm shelter. Practice Fire Safety- This time a year we finally get the opportunity to use our heaters and fireplaces. Because it has been a year since we used them last, dust has probably built-up on those coils. You may smell the dust burning when you first turn the heaters on. If a lot of dust has built up, sometimes this can cause a fire. Please do not leave your heaters running if you are leaving your homes.
Portable space heaters are another option to warm up. Never leave a space heater unattended, especially around children and pets. Also, keep your heaters at least three feet away from all furniture, curtains, and blankets. The rule is the same for space heaters, always turn them off before leaving your home or before going to bed. Some of us have fireplaces. If so, you should have your chimney professionally inspected. Creosote is a flammable material created from burning wood that can build up over time and cause a fire. A professional can advise you how to have your chimney professionally cleaned so that you can enjoy your fireplace and keep the fire in the hearth, where it belongs. It’s time to take down our decorations and that includes our Christmas trees. By January, most trees are dead and highly flammable. 40 percent of January fires are caused by Christmas tree fires. Please remove your trees and dispose of them properly. Our family here at Miramar Fire-Rescue would like to wish every one of you The Happiest of New Years! We hope 2020 brings you everything you wish for. Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. For more information please call (954) 602-4802. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1. Also, check us out at Miramarfd.org and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Deadly Consequences BY CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS enny Harris was 20 years old when she was killed in a car crash. Although she wore her seat belt, it did not work correctly. Her vehicle’s air bag should have protected her, but it did not deploy. Jenny should have survived that crash. The other driver walked away with little to no injuries. Unfortunately, Jenny’s car had hidden dangers with deadly consequences. The Miramar Police Department’s traffic homicide investigators are seeing more and more vehicles like Jenny Harris’. So much so, we produced a public service announcement (PSA) to tell her story and educate the community about these dangers. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND WHY: If you have purchased a used vehicle or plan to, you should know the complete history of the car. Not doing your research could cost you your life, or the life of your loved one. There are many online companies that can provide you with a vehicle’s history. Some are free. Some charge. However, it’s well worth your time and money to be informed. Knowing a car’s history goes beyond knowing whether it was given proper maintenance, such as oil changes. You need to know if it was involved in a crash and if it was repaired correctly. Far too often, cars are not repaired correctly and unscrupulous body shops bypass installing airbags that will not function when you need them to. If airbags do not work, there is a chance your seat belt will not work either. Finding out your vehicle history is only the first step. “I purchased a pre-owned vehicle that is fairly new, with low mileage. I have nothing to worry about, right?” WRONG. A new vehicle could have been crashed the day it was driven off the lot or soon thereafter. Our traffic homicide investigators have seen “rebuilt” cars that are not even six months old. “I have my preowned vehicle’s history and it shows nothing at all. Is it safe to drive this car?” Not necessarily. No records of any maintenance could also be a red flag. Vehicles from out of the country would lack history. Crash data may not have been collected or reported. Take precautions. Watch our PSA, learn how to obtain the history of your vehicle, what the red flags are and what to do with the information you obtain by visiting miramarpd.org. The time to find out your airbags and seat belts do not work is NOT when you are involved in a crash. Please take precautions and be safe Miramar! Sincerely, Dexter M. Williams Chief of Police

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com
