When my father, Bruce, started A Shade Above in 1984, he had a vision of a showroom-based shades and blinds company where customers could see full size, interactive displays of all the latest products on the market. In 2000, our Davie showroom was selected as the nation’s first Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery. In 2020 we opened a second showroom in Sunrise near the Sawgrass Mills Mall to better serve our expanding customer base. We’ve treated windows in thousands of Pembroke Pines homes, and our new showroom is conveniently

located for shoppers who live near or west of I-75. Customers in east or central Pembroke Pines can continue to use our Davie showroom. Both of our state-of-the-art showrooms offer a wide variety of indoor and outdoor shades and blinds from top national and international brands. We have products to fit all budgets.

We are putting together an exceptional artist lineup and fusing the different genres of music from the African Diaspora, and we hope Miramar residents and visitors from all over can come out to enjoy great music at a gorgeous venue,” exclaimed Commissioner Davis. Previous Headliners included reggae sensation, Capleton, Afrobeat artist Stonebwoy from Ghana and Amara La Negra. They were joined by Julien Believe and Jay Shep from the Bahamas, gospel-reggae singer, Soné and the Gutta Twins from Jamaica. Miramar’s own Tone C also performed.

The event was hosted by Yvette Marshall and Lance-O of Kulcha Shok Muzik with DJ Mikey Mike. This year, contemporary reggae singer and Grammy Award nominee, Protégé will take the stage among many other talented artists. “The Afro-Carib event is intended to promote diversity through entertainment by providing an array of different genres and spark attention about all that the City of Miramar has to offer,” said Elizabeth Valera, Parks and Recreation Director. lthough she was born in Panama, Sofia Constantino grew up in Weston. And much like all the other kids, she began her education at Gator Run Elementary before moving on to Imagine Charter School, and now Cypress Bay High School (CBHS). She played with friends, went to the parks, and participated in an abundance of extracurricular and after-school activities, but it was at the age of 9 she found her true love in singing. From that early age it became clear that she would be connecting to the world through music and her presence on the stage. In 2017 Sofia’s parents knew they had to do something with their child’s gift, so they enrolled her in Rising Starz Academy. It was here that the determined young artist spent hours upon hours perfecting her craft. The music and performance training academy prepared her for what would come next. Rising Starz owner Vanessa Valentin saw her potential and placed in her in their Artist Development Program. She then recommended that Sofia was ready to take the next step which was to find a recording studio and an artist name; Vanquish Studios became the birth place of Zofi. “Zofi has an inner magic that exudes love, kindness, and joy to all those around her. She experiences life at its fullest and is able to capture every detail in her song writing and performances. We witnessed her amazing talent for singing at an early age and committed to supporting and encouraging her to become the star she has

This year I have chosen the word “gratitude.” The past two years have reminded me how quickly time passes us by and how our world can change at a moment’s notice. It is easy to take for granted the blessings we are given every day, no matter how small they may be and no matter how challenging our day may be. Sometimes we forget to notice the good moments, the moments of joy when they happen. Sometimes we take for granted those around us and forget to let them know how much we

Protect yourself from Fraud

raud can happen to anyone. Criminals use clever techniques to defraud victims of millions of dollars every year. Learn about some of the most common scams and how to avoid becoming a victim:

PRIZE AND LOTTERY SCAMS – Usually

the caller will say you’ve won a prize, but need to pay taxes, registration fees, or shipping to receive it. They may even impersonate well-known entities to gain your trust. Don’t wait until after you pay, to find out there is no prize.

FAMILY IN TROUBLE – Callers that claim your loved one has been arrested, kidnapped, or injured and are demanding money on the spot, are probably trying to scam you. Your loved one’s cell phone could have been lost, stolen, or cloned. Often times these scammers do their research, prey upon your emotions and sound very believable. ONLINE SALES – Buying or selling on a

third-party website or app such as Offer Up, eBay, Letgo or others? Never accept a check as payment. Meet in public, in a well-lit place and make sure the item you are buying actually works before handing over your cash.

GOVERNMENT CALLS – The Social

Security Administration, IRS or other government entity will never call to ask for your social security number, or demand that you pay a debt over the phone or by wire transfer. Threats of arrest are also a red flag.

COMMUNICATION FROM YOUR BANK OR CREDIT CARD – your bank or credit

card company will NEVER call or email YOU and ask for your FULL social security number, date of birth, and account number. Do not disclose your pin, username, or password for online banking to callers either.

EMPLOYMENT SCAMS – Scammers may request that you pay an application fee or charge high fees in advance prior to placement. Some scammers will even send you a check to pay for items or equipment needed to do the “job.” Checks will clear your bank account, but days or weeks later your bank will reverse that deposit due to fraud, leaving you at a loss. EXTENDED CAR WARRANTIES – Scammers find out details about your car and then urge you to buy overpriced

or worthless service contracts. Buy your warranties directly from a reputable dealer.

CALLS FROM UTILITY COMPANIES –

Receive a call from someone claiming to be from a utility company, telling you they will shut off services immediately unless you make a payment over the phone? Hang up and call the number listed on your utility bill to verify.

AT HOME VISITS – If someone shows up

to your home, claiming to be from a utility company and needing to do a repair you did not request, don’t be distracted. Don’t fall for fake IDs either. We recommend that you do not open your door and call the company directly if necessary.

UNSOLICITED EMAILS OR TEXT MESSAGES – Phishing messages and

text messages say they’ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts, claim there’s a problem with your account, say you’re eligible for a refund or send you a fake invoice. Don’t click on the links! If you believe the messages may be from a legitimate business, call the number on your bill or statement to verify.

PROTECT YOURSELF!

Don’t trust caller ID: Scammers can spoof their calls from anywhere in the world and make the name and phone number on your screen appear to look legitimate. Block unwanted calls or text messages.

STOP BEFORE YOU PAY – Never

wire money to anyone you don’t know personally! Be wary of callers who request you pay them with a prepaid credit card, gift card or through money transfer apps. This is risky because it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. And remember, if someone you don’t know sends you a check and asks for money back, it’s probably a scam.

RESIST PRESSURE – Criminals pressure you to act quickly. Legitimate companies will be happy to give you time to make a decision. TALK TO SOMEONE – Before you give

up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Slow down, check out the story, consult an expert or just tell a friend… and call the police.
