Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever

T

he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

Volunteers Make a Huge Difference for Broward County’s Most Vulnerable through the Guardian Ad Litem Program BY TERRY JAILLET

R

etired Miami-Dade Police Detective and Hostage Negotiator Tom Hixon is a serious man. During his career in the Police force he saw firsthand how children’s lives can be upended from an early age. This is part of the reason Tom chose to become a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) . Guardians ad Litem are court-appointed advocates who represent the best interests of children who have been removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. These unpaid volunteers act as a child’s advocate and

as a mentor during what is typically the most disruptive moments of his or her young life. Tom’s first case was a case involving a young man with both emotional and legal challenges. He had been in and out of the juvenile justice system for some time. Tom was referred to the case just after the young man had been placed is a residential treatment facility. Tom is a man of great presence. His calm and compassionate demeaner was exactly what this young man needed. Tom’s used his career as a police detective to help him make a connection with his mentee. It took time, but now Tom receives calls form him for guidance. Tom is the one constant male influence that this young man has ever had. According to Kerry-Ann Brown, GAL’s volunteer recruiter, “The program represents over 2,700 children in the dependency system in Broward County and there is a great need for volunteers. There are no specific educational requirements, as we train our volunteers. You just have to have the heart and be ready to give your time to be a Voice for a child.” Children who have a Guardian ad Litem volunteer do better in school, find a safe permanent home more quickly, are less likely to return to foster care and receive more services to help them than children in similar circumstances without one. Unfortunately, Broward County has only half the number of volunteers needed. If you are passionate about children, and want to make a difference in a child’s life by breaking the circle of abuse, you can help by becoming a Guardian ad Litem volunteer, contact our office at 954-831-6214 or email us at 17th.recruitment@gal.fl.gov You can also find more information about the program by visiting www. galbroward.org.

Comcast Adds 600 Jobs to Miramar in Effort to Improve Customer Service BY JOHN DUKA

A

t an event attended by Governor Rick Scott, Cable giant Comcast announced they will be adding more than 600 new jobs to their facility on SW 25th Street. The jobs are part of a larger program to improve the company’s customer service. “Comcast truly stands out for its continued investment in both our community and in the families whose lives will be positively impacted by these new jobs,” said Mayor Wayne Messam. Comcast, which is the nation’s largest Cable TV and internet provider, has struggled to improve its position at the bottom of many customer service ratings. The company is adding 5,500 new customer service employees across the country in their latest program to improve this. Miramar currently houses more than 300 customer account executives in the company’s Spanish-language customer care “Center of Excellence.” In addition to expanding this organization, the company will add 160 new technical support personnel that will exclusively serve small and medium business customers. In addition to the job expansion Comcast also announced that they are the recipient of the Seven Seals Award for “extraordinary support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.” The award is given by the Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The ESGR is a Department

of Defense program established to promote cooperation and understanding between military reservists and their civilian employers. Governor Scott commented, “I am proud to announce that Comcast will be expanding in Florida and creating 600 new jobs for families in Miramar. I was also honored to recognize some of the many military members and veterans that have built careers at Comcast thanks to the company’s commitment to hiring our brave service members.” Comcast set a goal in May 2015, to hire 10,000 members of the military community, including Veterans, Reservists and Military Spouses. The Company claims it will reach this goal by the end of 2017. “Comcast is proud to reaffirm our support for our employees who serve as members of the National Guard and Reserve,” said Carol Eggert, Comcast’s Senior Vice President of Military and Veteran Affairs. “We recognize that these men and women are invaluable both to our company and to our Nation’s defense. We highly value their skills and are proud to have thousands of members of the military community in all levels of the organization.” To learn more about job opportunities at the new Comcast facility visit jobs.comcast.com.

Keep Your Teen Athlete Fueled With These 4 Vital Tips

H

igh school can be intense, but being a student athlete can intensify expectations. As the start of spring sports approaches, the stakes are even higher for students to maintain the success they had first semester.. Being a standout in the classroom and on the field requires expert-level planning and execution. Here are four easy tips to help you ensure that your teen is ready for a great season, on and off the field: ▸▸ Food: Allison Maurer - a sports dietitian and Gatorade consultant who has worked with high school and collegiate athletes - says, “The important thing to remember is that food is fuel. It gives athletes the energy they need to perform and helps them recover. When planning your athletes’ meals, look for whole food sources that provide high-quality fats, lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.” ▸▸ Hydration: When exercising hard, the body cools itself through sweat. If body mass is reduced by about 2 percent, which would be 3 pounds of water weight loss in a 150-pound athlete, it can negatively affect performance. “Athletes lose more than water in sweat, so it’s

important that they take their hydration seriously since it can impact performance,” Maurer says. “There are a number of products to meet an athlete’s hydration and fueling preferences. For those look-

ing for an organic fueling option, I recommend G Organic, Gatorade’s latest product. It’s made with only seven ingredients and provides the same hydra-

tion benefits that athletes expect from Gatorade.” ▸▸ Rest: Although teens may seem to bounce back easily from a night with too little rest, the truth is that good sleep helps both learning and athletic performance. Sleep helps athletes recover, especially after they’ve pushed their limits in an intense workout. In addition, teens with earlier bedtimes had better grades than those who stayed up later and slept less, according to a study of 3,000 subjects cited by the National Sleep Foundation. ▸▸ Planning: Schedules have a way of colliding, and this especially happens when a huge test and a game are scheduled for the same day. Each week, sit down with your student athlete and walk through that week’s schedule. Look at practices, games, homework assignments and tests, and create a calendar. That way, if a midterm and a game take place on the same day, he or she can plan accordingly. This will help avoid a late-night, stress-filled cram session that will steal from their performance in the classroom and on the field. Life as a student athlete means keeping everything in balance. By focusing on the body - from nutrition to time management - athletes can focus on giving their best performance this upcoming season.

Describe your services.

I completed training from one of the world’s most advanced training centers in dental implantology, Misch International Implant Institute. I continue to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in implants.

How long have you owned your practice?

This month, makes one year since I took over the practice. And what a great year it has been. Dr. Diaz chose me to continue the excellent care he had given to his patients for so many years.

I love the practice of dentistry and enjoy being able help all my patients with all their oral care needs. COMMUNITY NEWS

ixed martial arts outfit Titan FC will bring hardhitting action to the Pembroke Pines City Center (PPCC) on May 19th with Titan FC44. The event will feature a number bouts including two title fights. Titan FC flyweight campion, Jose Torres will attempt to become the first Titan dual-weight champion when he faces bantam weight champion Farkhad Sharipov in the main event. In addition, Kurt Holobaugh and Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante will battle for the interim lightweight championship. The fighting card is the first in a series of at least seven MMA events to be held at “The Frank” during the facility’s inaugural year. Titan FC had previously hosted events at the Watsco Center and the Bank United Center in Coral Gables but has signed a long-term contract with the PPCC. Titan FC COO, Lex McMahon commented “We are looking forward to a great long term relationship with Pembroke Pines City Center, the new home of Titan Fighting and truly a world class facility.” The decision to move the events the PPCC is a sign of the meteoric growth of MMA in South Florida and the evolving acceptance of the sport in suburban areas like Miramar and Pembroke Pines. It also highlights the diverse functionality of the venue. During May, the first full month of use, the PPCC will host four events, including standard bearer of American Funk, Cool & The Gang. Tickets for the event are available via ticketmaster.com.

Miramar High School Senior Wins Prestigious Questbridge Scholarship

SECTION CAN DO KID HEAD

BY TERRY JAILLET

C

hristina Dulal, a senior at Miramar High School, will be enrolling at Notre Dame University this fall and plans on studying physics with a minor in energy & sustainability. Christina and her family are looking forward to the many exciting challenges of transitioning from High School to College. One challenge they won’t have to worry about, however, is Notre Dame’s $48,000 per year tuition. Christina is one of the select few winners of the prestigious Questbridge Scholarship. The nationwide Questbridge program matches students with some of the top universities in the country. “Matched” students are offered full-tuition scholarships at the universities they are matched with. Just 5% of the 14,491 highly qualified applicants were selected for this year’s awards. “After becoming a Questbridge scholar, I feel a new sense of responsibility; I feel that I should use this opportunity to better the lives of others through pursuing a STEM career,” Christina beamed after hearing the news. Christina mixed a science and technology-heavy course load with a number of extracurricular activities. She was the Founder and President of the STEM Club, Captain and Choreographer of the International Dance Team, an Officer of National Honor Society, Captain of the Brain Brawl team, and Activity Coordinator for the CFES STEM program. She also hopes to continue her dedication to community service, “As the founder of an Anti-Sex Trafficking organization and a Regional Ambassador for Girl Rising, I believe that my life would be unfulfilled if I didn’t lend my help to those in need. To me, advocating on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves is a small act of kindness that can completely change the life of another.” Christina’s scholarship to Notre Dame is good for all four years of her undergraduate career.

SCHOOL NEWS

B

roward County Public Schools expanded its After-School Supper Program to include additional schools last month. The program is now available at 106 schools, including 11 in Miramar. The Supper Program is designed to ensure

that students who participate in regularly scheduled after-school educational or enrichment activities receive the nutrition they need to grow and learn. The meals are funded through the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Child Care Food Program (CCFP) and are offered in the schools’ cafeterias at no separate charge. Nearly one in six households with children experience “food insecurity” according to a study published by the USDA. The program helps provide hot balanced meals to help offset the demands on these families. Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”

Maria Artze, MD

Breast Cancer Radiologist

Cassann Blake, MD Breast Surgeon

Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says

The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue

sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” For a consultation with a Cleveland Clinic Florida breast specialist, call 866.213.5789 or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/breastcancer for more information.

olor blindness is a disorder affecting the capability to see colors under typical light or to discern colors as they are normally seen. Generally, the condition is present at birth, but it can also result from old age or a number of diseases of the eye. The discernment of color depends on cones located in the eye. People are usually born with three kinds of pigmented cones, each of which perceives various wavelengths of color. When it comes to pigment, the size of the wave is directly linked to the perceived color tone. Short waves produce blue tones, middle-sized waves are perceived as green tones and longer waves are seen as reds. Which type of cone is affected impacts the spectrum and severity of the color blindness. Because it is a gender-linked recessive trait, green-red color deficiency is more frequent in men than in females. Still, there are a small number of females who do experience some degree of color blindness, particularly yellow-blue deficiencies. Color vision deficiencies are not a debilitating condition, but it can impair educational progress and work performance. Not having the ability to distinguish colors as friends do can quickly and negatively impact a student’s confidence. For working people, color blindness could become a disadvantage when competing against peers trying to advance in a similar industry.

There are several examinations for color blindness. The most common is the Ishihara color test, named after its inventor. For this test a patient views a plate with a circle of dots in various sizes and colors. Within the circle appears a digit in a particular tint. The patient’s ability to see the number inside the dots of contrasting colors indicates the level of red-green color sight. Even though inherited color vision deficiencies can’t be treated, there are some steps that might improve the situation. Some evidence shows that wearing tinted contacts or anti-glare glasses can help people to see the distinction between colors. More and more, computer applications are becoming available for regular personal computers and even for smaller machines that can assist users to distinguish color better depending upon their specific diagnosis. There are also exciting experiments being conducted in gene therapy to correct the ability to distinguish colors. How much color vision problems limit a person is dependent upon the type and severity of the condition. Some individuals can adapt to their condition by familiarizing themselves with alternate cues for colored objects or signs. For example, many individuals are capable of learning the shapes of traffic signs (rather than recognizing red) or contrasting items with paradigms like a blue body of water or green trees. If you notice signs that you or a child might be color blind, we recommend that you see an optometrist. The sooner you are aware of a problem, the sooner you can help. To book an eye exam for your child, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Three Keys to a Successful Foreclosure Appeal BY: OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND CONSUMER ADVOCACY ATTORNEY

D

id you know that even if you lose a foreclosure trial, you have the right to seek reversal of that ruling through an appeal to a higher court? There are at least three key points to successfully appeal a negative court ruling. First, a homeowner must ensure that a court reporter is present at the trial or hearing from which an appeal is taken. In most cases the appellate court will need a transcript of the hearing or trial in order to even proceed with an appeal. If the appellate court is asked to review something that the trial court decided by hearing testimony and evidence, the appellate court will require a transcript of the proceedings in order to review what happened and make a decision. An exception to the need for a transcript exists when there is a summary judgment hearing instead of a trial. At this kind of hearing, judgment is entered based on the documents filed, so the appellate court can review the lower court decision without a transcript.

Second, most people don’t know that although a notice of appeal is filed, the foreclosure sale of the property will go forward and the bank can still seek to collect any money due on the note after the property is sold, i.e., a deficiency judgment. In order to stop the sale after filing a notice of appeal, the homeowner must file an appropriate motion based upon the filing of the notice of appeal. The lender may insist that an appellate bond be paid. In cases where the judgment is secured by real property, as in foreclosure cases, the law allows the lower court judge to set a bond at any amount (including no amount at all), and requires that the judge hold a hearing to consider all relevant factors for setting a bond: the value of the property and whether the value exceeds the amount of the judgment, whether the homeowners occupy the property or if the property is being rented, whether insurance and association dues are being paid, and whether the property is deteriorating. Third, and most importantly, foreclosure appeals must be handled by attorneys experienced in handling the sale cancellation and bond issues in the lower court, as well as identifying all potential errors that may be raised on appeal. Foreclosure law is a very active area of the law, with new cases changing the direction of the law constantly. Strong appellate counsel, like the Arcia Law Firm, is familiar with the most recent case law and the current pace of foreclosure law to help you save your home. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, if you just received a foreclosure summons, or even if you are facing a foreclosure sale, contact The Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online, view informative articles and client success video testimonials, actual completed loan modifications organized by lender, or to chat live with one of our knowledgeable staff members.

Miramar Update MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Schedule Your Service Now!

BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

F

irst I would like to congratulate our elected Commissioners Winston Barnes, Yvette Colbourne and Maxwell Chambers on being re-elected to the City of Miramar Commission. I look forward to us all working together as a commission for the best interests of the residents of the community. We have a lot to be proud of and much more work to do for our great city, so it’s time for us to get to work! During this year’s legislative session, I had the opportunity to visit with state legislators to advocate for our city on important issues dealing with Home Rule, infrastructure, blasting regulations and where cell phone towers can be placed in our city. I look forward to giving a final report on how our city fared during this legislative session. I am proud to announce that the Miramar Community Garden was the recipient of Broward County’s NatureScape Special Achievement Emerald Award which recognizes businesses, municipalities, schools, government facilities, and homeowners that have created and maintained model Floridafriendly landscapes for completed exceptional projects. The Miramar Community Garden is located at 3700 Largo Drive in Miramar, right next to Fairway Elementary. It is used to encourage children to be aware of the importance of eating organic fruits and vegetables and to share tips on how to grow and plant them. We recently hosted the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials in Miramar. Officials from Panama City to North Bay Village, representing over one million Floridians, joined together to discuss best municipal practices in addressing economic development, job creation, criminal justice reform, and professional development. There was a great economic impact to the City of Miramar as the hosting of the conference contributed thousands of dollars to our hotels and local businesses. It’s often come to my attention that residents in the west have never explored Historic Miramar and what she has to offer. I am happy to announce the “Mayor’s Tour” where I will personally escort residents on a tour of our historic city, including visits to the world-renowned Ansin Sports complex, the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center (YEC), our award-winning MultiService Complex, the new Adult Day Care Center, Shirley Branca Park and the Miramar Community Garden. This tour will take place Saturday, June 10th beginning at 10 a.m. The bus shuttle will depart and return from Miramar Regional Park. For more information and to RSVP, please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov. Hope you can attend! Yours in Service,

Mayor Wayne Messam The Office of the Commission is located at 2300 Civic Center Place, Miramar 33025. To contact please call, 954-602-3198 or visit www.miramarfl.gov.

No Estate Plan? You Are Not Alone.

W

ould you be surprised to learn that as many as 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place? The distribution of their property, the care and custody of their minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of their estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the state of Florida. So in simple terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the state will make all your decisions for you. Another estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan revise or update their documents every 15+ years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 1999 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified, and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

Contact Us Today

Estate planning is often viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone. For those with minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, day care and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. For parents of adult children, do you trust that all of your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Are you a small business owner? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. My name is Chiquis and my age is unknown as I was adopted 2 years ago by my mother Alejandra. She is my favorite person as she saved my life and has given me all the love I never knew was even possible. I’ve even become an international traveler. Touring Peru and Italy with my mom and grandma. My favorite toy is this stuffed squeaky cat that I have already destroyed but my mom keeps on sewing it back together because she knows it’s my favorite. I enjoy laying in the bed next to my mom and watch her beg me for kisses. I was last seen taking a stroll with my grandpa around Waterford courtyards to greet some neighbors.
