June Joy: Embracing Sunshine, Pride, & Milestones
Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a refreshing beverage as you venture outdoors. With our winter visitors bidding adieu, let’s relish the less crowded conditions and bask in the beauty of our community.
June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.
In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!
June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.
Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

Children’s Harbor Hosts Third Annual Career Day Expo for Foster Youth
For many students in Broward County, "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" is an exciting opportunity to explore potential career paths by spending the day at their parent’s or guardian's workplace. However, for students currently in foster care, this day can be a reminder of the challenges they face without a parent or guardian to accompany them. To bridge this gap, Children's Harbor hosted its Third Annual Career Day Expo, providing a meaningful and inspiring experience for these youth.
The Career Day Expo was organized by Children's Harbor’s Academic and Life Skills team and featured representatives from 40 companies, government agencies, and the armed forces. This event offered students the chance to explore various career opportunities, interact with business professionals, and attend business etiquette and networking sessions. The goal was to introduce them to a wide range of potential career paths and inspire them to envision a promising future.
Throughout the Expo, students engaged with professionals from diverse fields, learning about different industries and what it takes to succeed in each one. After the event, each student chose an industry that most piqued their interest. The Children's Harbor team then arranged for hands-on experiences at the selected companies on "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," allowing students to gain real-world insights into their chosen careers.
“It’s truly a gift to be able to show these young people the kind of promising opportunities available to them,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “For kids who come from traumatic backgrounds, the need to learn what’s expected of them in the often-intimidating work world is especially important and can positively change the trajectory of their life forever.”
Children's Harbor, established in 1996, is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency dedicated to supporting families in the community and providing safe shelter and support for teens in foster care. The organization’s main campus in Pembroke Pines offers a
nurturing environment for teenagers in foster care and their younger siblings. Additionally, Children's Harbor runs a family strengthening program to prevent children from entering foster care by offering in-home counseling and support to struggling families. For young adults aged 18-23 who have aged out of foster care, Children's Harbor provides housing, wrap-around support, and independent living programs to help them transition into adulthood.
▸ With a mission to break cycles of trauma and provide a harbor of hope and healing, Children's Harbor is committed to helping foster youth grow into healthy, educated, and productive adults. The Career Day Expo is just one of the many ways the organization empowers young people to envision and achieve a brighter future.

READY FOR THE STORM:
Ava Stewart’s Hurricane Readiness Plan
When disaster strikes, having a reliable insurance partner is crucial. State Farm® agent Ava Stewart, a lifelong advocate for Miramar residents and businesses, is a testament to this. With the support of one of the industry’s largest catastrophe response teams, Ava’s extensive experience ensures she will be there for you, both in the past and in the future.
The power of a hurricane or severe wind is not to be underestimated. These unpredictable natural forces can pose a significant threat to your home and safety. However, by taking proactive measures, you can enhance your safety. While you can’t prevent a hurricane, you can fortify your home against its destructive force. We spoke with Ava to gain insights on effectively preparing, protecting, and recovering from a major storm.
What should families do to prepare for a hurricane?
Designate a safe room or place in your house to protect your family from injuries caused by broken windows or flying debris. These rooms are typically on the house’s interior, on the ground floor, away from doors and windows.
We also recommend having a family disaster plan and putting together a survival kit in case you need to evacuate. The kit should include basic items such as water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, blankets, food, and fresh water. If you have pets, include whatever they might need as well. If you need to leave before a storm, ensure you secure your home as best you can.
Anything that could turn into a dangerous flying object should be brought inside. It is also a good idea to take photos or a video of the interior and exterior of your home. In the event of a loss, it is much easier to demonstrate ownership of your valuables this way.
What steps should we take after a storm?
When it is safe to return home, the first thing to do is to assess your property for any damage. Before you do any repairs or hire someone to do them, be sure to discuss them with your insurance claims representative and keep track of all the time and money spent. To speed up the insurance claims process, it’s crucial to document all the items you throw out. This informed and prepared approach can make a significant difference in the aftermath of a storm.
Time and again, the failure to take basic precautions has made hurricanes more tragic. Following some simple steps before a storm hits can help shield your property against wind and water and prevent injuries to your family.
Ava offers a no-obligation risk analysis for all Miramar residents, homeowners, renters, and business owners. Whether you need to cover your home, apartment, office, or home-based business, State Farm has protection packages that fit your needs and budget. This complimentary service will help identify risks and give you peace of mind. Call 954-4508355 to schedule yours today. For more info about Ava or State Farm®, visit www. avastewart.com

Miramar Police Citizens' Academy Engages Community Members
The Miramar Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy (C.P.A.) is one of the more popular programs the city has to offer. It is a series of classes designed to educate the citizens about police operations within the city. The main purpose is to give residents a thorough understanding of how the department works in the community.
Typically, classes are taught in a classroom at the Miramar Police Department, 11765 City Hall Promenade, Miramar. But, there are exceptions when there is an opportunity for the occasional “field trip.” Participants better understand the day-today functions of the police department and learn valuable information on topics such as DUI enforcement, economic crimes, and crime prevention programs. They also receive an introduction to the K-9 Unit, Special Victims, Road Patrol, and Community Policing. During the course of the academies, qualified participants have the option to engage in a Ride-Along program which permits them to ride with an officer during a normal patrol shift.
The academy is held in two sessions. The first begins in February and the second in August. They meet once a week on Tuesdays for 14 weeks. There is also an abbreviated Spanish-speaking version (Hispanic Outreach Law Enforcement Academy or H.O.L.A.) held during the summer in addition to a Crime Prevention Academy for Businesses at the end of the summer, both four weeks long. Registration for all academies is ongoing until the first or second week into each one. However, the Police Department requests that only citizens committed to attending the entire group of classes register.
During the academies, law enforcement experts in their particular field present a variety of topics to the “students.” C.P.A. has approximately 14 presenters, Crime Prevention has approximately six to eight presenters, and H.O.L.A. has about eight. They use a variety of media for their presentations, utilizing PowerPoints, videos, and other tools specific to the topic. They even employ Fatal Vision goggles used by the Traffic Unit to measure drowsiness or distracted impairment.
All class members are encouraged to ask questions for the instructors to answer. Additionally, Oona Hall, Public Affairs Specialist, schedules time particularly for a question/answer session toward the end of the course for the Police Chief to answer. Often, during the academy, myths and preconceived ideas are dispelled. Reactions from attendees are extremely positive and they have a new appreciation for law enforcement. For example, Willis Eubanks wrote, “We have always appreciated and respected law enforcement;...However, it was not until, my son and I ‘experienced’ Miramar’s C.P.A. did we gain the ‘truest’ appreciation for what our City’s finest (men and women) do every day for us: They put their individual lives on-the-line for us each day in order to keep us safe and from harm’s way.”
▸ Currently, classes are limited to no more than 25 participants. If you are interested in the topics of discussion or registering for the class scan the QR code.

However, if the buyer intends to pay the points themselves, there are certain circumstances in which mortgage buydowns are more suitable. Certain limitations apply, call for details.

Pride is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful declaration of identity, unity, and resilience. In the context of public safety, Pride signifies the commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is treated with dignity and respect. For the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition, Pride embodies its mission to foster an inclusive environment where the LGBTQ+ community is protected and celebrated for their contributions to society.
In the vibrant landscape of Broward County, the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition shines brightly, charting a progressive course through its collaborative endeavors. Founded in December 2020, this coalition stands as a testament to its members’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety, inclusion, and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community within law enforcement agencies, fire rescue departments, and various levels of government organizations at the city, state, and federal levels. As we celebrate Pride Month and reflect on the strides made in the fight for equality, it’s crucial to recognize the pivotal role played by this coalition in championing LGBTQ+ rights.

Together, we can continue to march towards a future where every individual is celebrated, every voice is heard, and every heart is filled with pride.
The birth of the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition emerged from an acute awareness of the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in accessing public safety services and working within these agencies. For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.
The last few years with book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation were stark reminders that complacency is not an option

and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.
As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.
We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.
Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding
others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.

They were all pedestrians, struck by vehicles that fled the scene of the crash.
According to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), “Florida has seen the amount of hit-and-run crashes remain steady, with nearly 25 percent of all crashes involving a hit-and-run. Although the majority of hit-and-run crashes only result in property damage, hit-and-run crashes can be deadly.” In 2023, hit-and-run crashes resulted in 271 fatalities and 871 serious bodily injuries in Florida alone.
In moments of panic and distress, it's human nature to want to flee from a scene of chaos. However, it's imperative to recognize the critical importance of staying put after a crash. MIRAMAR UPDATE
By Mayor Wayne Messam
As May unfolds, I contemplate the vibrancy and liveliness that characterize our exceptional city of Miramar. From the jubilant festivities of Mother's Day to the diverse array of events commemorating Haitian Heritage Month, alongside the numerous business activities that cement our city's reputation as a hub of commerce, there's an unmistakable sense of community spirit permeating the atmosphere.
However, amidst our festivities, there's a matter of great concern that demands our collective attention: the looming threat of a proposed incinerator project to be built right in our backyard. Now, I'm all for progress and development, but not at the expense of people's health and the cleanliness of our environment.
Miramar is a city on the rise. We're setting new benchmarks for what a city of our size can achieve, but let's be clear: we will not compromise on the safety and well-being of our residents. That's non-negotiable.
Our City Commission stands united against this incinerator proposal and I'm calling on all our neighbors, not just in Miramar, but across Broward County, to stand with us. This isn't just about our city limits; it's about protecting our schools, our natural habitats, and the health of every single one of us.
I wish to express my firm stance against selecting the Airport West site. Should this site be chosen, I assure you of my firm commitment to oppose the construction of the incinerator. We are prepared to collaborate closely with environmental groups, neighboring cities, and government bodies. We are also ready to pursue legal action, if necessary, to prevent this development.
Regarding the air quality report, it doesn't reflect the reality of what's at stake here. We need transparency, honesty, and accountability in assessing the true impact of this incinerator.
As your mayor, I'm here to fight for you. I'm not just a politician; I'm a son of Miramar, deeply rooted in the heartbeat of this community. And together, we'll stand firm against any threat that comes our way.
So, let's make ourselves heard. Let's show them that we won't back down when our city's future is on the line. Together, we'll protect our families, our environment, and our beloved Miramar. Sign the petition at MiramarFl.gov/NOBURN.
Stay strong, stay united, and let's keep moving forward together.
Yours in Service,
Wayne Messam

Greetings From Your Chamber President!

As we approach the beginning of hurricane season here in South Florida, it's essential for businesses to prioritize emergency preparedness to ensure the safety of employees, protect assets, and maintain operations during times of crisis. Hurricanes, power outages, and flooding are all potential threats that can significantly impact business continuity.
First and foremost, businesses should have a comprehensive emergency plan in place that outlines procedures for evacuations, communication protocols, and steps to safeguard critical infrastructure and data. Prepare lists of important items, make copies of essential documents, and rely on backup systems whenever possible. Regular training and drills can help ensure that employees are familiar with emergency procedures.
When it comes to hurricanes, businesses should closely monitor weather forecasts and take proactive measures to secure their facilities, such as boarding up windows, securing outdoor equipment, and relocating valuable assets if flooding is a concern.
In the event of flooding, businesses should have measures in place to protect against water damage, such as sandbagging doorways and installing flood barriers. Additionally, businesses should establish communication channels with employees, customers, suppliers, and local authorities to provide updates and coordinate response efforts during emergencies. Always have a backup plan for how and when you’ll reopen after a weather event.
By taking proactive steps to prepare for hurricanes, power outages, and flooding, businesses can minimize the impact of disasters and increase their resilience in the face of adversity. In the event of a hurricane, the Chamber will be ready to assist before and after the weather event to help businesses get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit miramarpembrokepines.org.
