ur dedication to Serving Our Community is a top priority. When COVID struck, we transitioned to virtual engagements, such as our online Citizens’ Police Academy, to stay connected. We also participated in numerous drive-by events: from birthday to graduation celebrations; socially distant visits with seniors in our community; and helped in distributing boxes of food to those in need. Earlier this year, we began to transition back to in-person events, with safety precautions still in place. We held a Coffee with a Cop meet-and-greet in April, as well as other events that have allowed us to engage with our community:

This year, we have held two Community & Cops events. A third is expected in July. Hosted by Commissioner Alexandria Davis, these events were held in numerous shopping plazas throughout the city and were a great opportunity for residents and business owners to meet officers, have productive
dialogue about current law enforcement trends, and discuss programs and services the police department offers. We also welcomed those interested in a career in law enforcement to stop by and learn more about employment opportunities.
RIDING THE BLOCK
What started out as a simple bike ride has now become a highly anticipated sequel. On May 15, 2021 the Miramar Police officers, alongside Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam, rode bicycles through the streets and plazas of Miramar to connect with the community. The ride began at Miramar Regional Park and continued to the Home Depot plaza on Dykes Road, then to the Huntington, Windsor Palms, and Monarch Lakes communities. The group drew lots of attention and support from motorists who cheered by blowing car horns and clapping. While riding through the neighborhoods, officers stopped to speak with residents who were outside
washing cars, exercising, or gardening. Children got a chance to get a personal tour of police cars and learned how to activate the sirens. It was not long before the group grew, with additional residents picking up their own bicycles and riding along. Our next Riding the Block events will be held in central and Historic Miramar. our heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout your body. If you have heart failure, your heart cannot pump blood efficiently and your body may not get all the blood and oxygen it needs to function normally. Let’s deubunk 5 common myths about heart failure.
MYTH 1: If you have heart disease, you need to take it easy.
For the vast majority of people with heart disease, being sedentary is a bad idea. It can lead to blood clots in the legs and a decline in overall physical condition. Physical activity helps strengthen the heart muscle, improves blood flow to the brain and internal organs.
MYTH 2: If you take a cholesterol- lowering drug, you can eat anything. If you take a statin and continue to eat foods that are high in cholesterol plus
saturated fat, the drug will not be as effective, and your cholesterol level will not fall, and may even rise.
MYTH 3: It’s okay to have higher blood pressure when you’re older.
Blood pressure tends to rise with age because artery walls become stiff with age. Stiff arteries force the heart to pump harder. Blood pounding against the artery walls damages them over time. The overworked heart muscle becomes less effective and pumps harder. This increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
MYTH 5: “I’d know if I had high blood pressure because there would be warning signs.”
High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because you don’t usually know you have it. You may never experience symptoms. Early treatment of high blood pressure is critical because, if left untreated, it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and other serious health problems.
MYTH 4: Young people do not need to worry about heart disease
It is true that heart disease is more likely to affect people over the age of 65, but 4-10% of heart attacks occur in people under the age of 45 years, mainly men. It is how we live our lives as children, adolescents and adults that lays the groundwork for heart health as we age.

eanluca Martinez-Lopez of Pembroke Pines was the most recent “Make-A-Wish” kid to have a wish granted. The six-year-old was born with a life-threatening heart disease that has been extremely challenging for the sweet boy and his family. However, Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida wanted to alleviate some of the stress and provide some happiness to allow them all to forget about his lifelong medical issues for just a little while.

Typically, there are five types of wish requests: “I wish to be (something),” “I wish to meet (someone),” “I wish to go (somewhere),” “I wish to have (something),” and “I wish to give (something).” Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida has granted more than 12,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. The non-profit organization aims to grant a wish for every medically eligible child in its territory. Jeanluca’s wish was a dolphin encounter and the Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida team was happy to oblige. The generous organization presented the Pembroke Pines family with a dream vacation in Clearwater, Florida with admission to be VIP guests at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The visit included a private tour of the dolphin habitat before the facility opened to the public as well as an opportunity to participate in a training session. “It’s been a flawless and fantastic experience,” exclaimed Lucy Lopez, Jeanluca’s mother.

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be valid. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are 5 District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed 6 months before. Unfortunately I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final. Except under limited circumstances only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed. An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER”. In an appeal you are asking a three judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce, the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. Pediatric Foot and Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.

-rays do not always provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. Injuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury, and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate
to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Early diagnosis is crucial. Treatment options include: 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster the injury heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. Dear Readers, Summer is here and that means many of us will be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to take this time to remind everyone how important it is to be water safe. Hanging out at the pool, at the beach, or even splashing in a wading pool on a hot Florida day is a great way to beat the heat this summer, but it can also spell tragedy if you don’t know how to swim. Drowning takes the lives of many people of all ages every year. Be sure to also assign “water watchers” for children as they swim. Most importantly, it’s never too late to learn how to swim. The City of Pembroke Pines offers swimming lessons for Parent/Child and Beginner level 3 through Adult. Pre-Registration is required at Towngate Park, located at 901 N.W. 155th Avenue, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Session Fee for Pembroke Pines residents is $45 and $57 for non-residents. The swimming classes are held Monday through Thursday, in two-week sessions in the morning or evening and via eight consecutive sessions on Saturday mornings. Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors teach lessons at two Pembroke Pines locations: Pembroke Lakes Pool, 10500 Taft Street, and/or Towngate Pool, 901, N.W. 155th Avenue. Swim lesson registration will remain open until all lessons are filled. Lessons will run throughout the summer and through August. Proof of residency is needed at time of registration for the resident rate. If a child needs to be swim tested, they need to come prepared to get in the swimming pool. Fall lessons begin in September and October. For more information regarding swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895. You may also be noticing some changes to your utility bill. A new and improved City of Pembroke Pines Utility Billing System is being used to allow for accounts to be easily accessed and managed, and enhance the customer experience. This change is the result of the City’s efforts to provide world-class services and in response to the community’s need for convenience, transparency, simplicity and flexibility. In the coming months the Utilities Department will provide everything customers will need to know for a smooth transition such as when the transition begins, how to read the new Utility bill, where to locate a new utility account number, how to sign up for CSS and much more.
