Here’s to George Washington!
T
he United States will turn 246 this year. This is cause for celebration. We live in the world’s longest-running representative democracy since Julius Caesar ended the Roman Republic over 2,000 years ago.
Our country’s ability to evolve with the times while maintaining its constitutional government is one of the keys to our long-lasting success. In large part, we have George Washington to thank for that. Washington was an extraordinarily popular figure following the end of the Revolutionary War and many people were calling for a strong executive to serve as President. While they did not want a king, many wanted a “strong” leader with king-like powers. If Washington chose to consolidate power during his early days as President, rather than humbly focusing on establishing a democracy, history could have turned out very differently. This is precisely what happened in France just three years after Washington left office. Napoleon Bonaparte quickly morphed his role as First Consul of France into the lifetime Emperor of France. It is easy to imagine decades of unrest and conflict had Washington had similar ambitions. While we watch the fireworks and celebrate Independence Day this year, lets give a nod of gratitude to our first President. George Washington set the example for every American leader. We all can aspire to his humility and deep belief in duty, especially our elected officials.

Miramar Hosts 2022 Job Fair
T
By Our City Staff
he City of Miramar hosted its Job and Education Fair at the Miramar Cultural Center Banquet Hall on Thursday, May 26. The event featured many top area businesses who were eager to meet job applicants as well as local colleges and universities. Job hunters and people interested in furthering their education met with hiring managers and admissions counselors to take the next step in their careers. Full-time jobs, part-time positions, remote jobs, and even positions offering sign-on bonuses were available. Hundreds of eager job applicants arrived
early with resumes in hand. Many left the event with good news and a new opportunity. Informational sessions, as well as one-on-one interviews with hiring managers, were held on-site with participating companies. “This event is a great opportunity for job seekers to meet with top employers from various industries and to hear from professionals who will discuss their career journey,” said Miramar Commissioner Alexandra Davis, “The City of Miramar cares about our residents and we are always seeking new ways to open doors for members of our community to land a new job and to complete a higher education. I am pleased that over 70 top companies such as Amazon, WSVN-7, Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Seminole Hard Rock Support Services, Waste Pro USA, Sam’s Club, and many others were here with immediate openings to be filled. Additionally, FIorida International University, Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, DeVry University and FVI School of Nursing and Technology met
with applicants to discuss degree programs and certifications.” Based on the event’s success, it is expected that more job fairs will be held in the future.

The scholarships are provided by the League and will allow the selected municipalities to access the technical assistance and expertise of national and regional organizations. “Our state is no stranger to climate impacts,” said FLC Executive Director/CEO Jeannie Garner. “The League has seen many cities working to address those impacts in their local communities, but we also recognize that many local governments lack sufficient resources and support to do the same. That’s why we decided to offer these scholarships, to help those cities on their path to sustainability. And supporting Florida’s cities, towns and villages is our top priority at the League, so we’re thrilled to be able to provide this assistance.”

he Miramar Police Department and Miramar Fire-Rescue hosted several events last month to better engage the public. The events served multiple purposes, including helping citizens get acquainted with local law enforcement and firefighters and introducing residents to programs the organizations offer. Miramar PD hosted “Coffee With A Cop” at Starbucks on Red Road on May 31st. The zero-agenda gathering was an opportunity
for officers to meet with folks to discuss concerns or just interact. About a half dozen officers met with residents. A couple of brave officers even got behind the counter and made lattes and espressos. The event included no agendas, or speeches, just an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know the officers that keep Miramar safe. Miramar’s Community and Public Safety Event was held on June 11th at River Run Plaza on Miramar Parkway. The event was co-hosted by Commissioner Alexandra Davis and allowed Miramar PD and Fire-Rescue to embrace the community. National Merit Scholarships
he National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 17 Broward County seniors recipients of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.7 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states. Fewer than 8,000 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar.
Broward’s winners include:

ANKLE PAIN IN CHILDREN
And Teenagers By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.
T
he ankle joint is a complex structure consisting of bones, ligaments, tendons, growth plates and cartilage that allow the ankle to move smoothly. Many structures can be injured from twisting the foot or ankle in sports or from blunt trauma. Flat feet are a primary source of ankle pain because of the stress that the foot puts on the inside of the ankle and the lower leg. Good supportive shoes and occasionally orthotics will help to give more support and stability. Many cases must be evaluated for potential long-term problems that may necessitate physical therapy or a surgical procedure. Growth plates are present on the inside and outside of the ankle. Injuries to the growth plate or fractures to the bone can occur during sports or general activities. Immediate care is necessary to prevent growth disturbances. Bones and growth plates out of position need to be placed back into the proper position
to prevent any long-term problems. Ligament injuries are very common in sports. Ligaments connect the bones together and when the foot twists excessively ligaments can tear. These problems usually necessitate immobilization in a boot or cast to allow the ligaments to heal primarily. Cartilage injuries are rare but when pain in an ankle or foot persists MRIs are necessary to evaluate the bone, bone marrow and cartilage surfaces further. CT scans may also be necessary. Arthroscopic surgery may be necessary in some cases. Infections are rare but they can become very problematic. Any injury that causes redness, swelling, heat and a generalized fever may need to be addressed immediately. In most cases, antibiotics alone will take care of an infection, but it is necessary to be seen immediately to prevent the need for more aggressive treatment. Inflammatory conditions that affect children must also need to be ruled out. Soft tissue and bone tumors are extremely rare, but if there are bumps or areas of swelling that are
noticed they need to be evaluated quickly. The more quickly a child or teenager is evaluated for a foot, ankle or leg problem the better the prognosis.

Don’t Let Mosquitos Bite!
osquito season is here again. As the summer rains come and go, it’s time to take preventative measures to safeguard yourself and your home. Help reduced mosquito breeding habitats by eliminating standing water in and around your property. The life cycle of a mosquito is approximately seven days. They can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads.
Regularly dump anything that holds water. If it's too large to be dumped, apply larvicide to keep the mosquito larvae from developing. Some mosquitoes, such as the variety that carries the Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, breed indoors and outdoors and bite anytime of the day or night. If you go outdoors on a buggy night, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. Spray your skin and clothing with an insect repellent that contains DEET or other approved ingredients.
Draining standing water is the most effective way to stop them from reproducing. “Mosquitoes multiply quickly, but you can stop them in their tracks,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. “Practice ‘drain and cover.’ When you dump standing water, you eliminate the breeding ground for mosquito larvae and getting rid of the source is the best way to avoid being bitten.” Mosquito eggs that are laid in shallow water can hatch in a day or two. The larvae grow fast, turning into a pupa that quickly develops into a full-grown mosquito. The life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes eight to 10 days. The pupae become flying mosquitoes in two to three days.

y Fellow Miramarians, In March of this year, I had the opportunity to represent the great city of Miramar via invitations from the President of the Annual Investment Meeting, Mr. Dawood Al Shezawi, and Broward County to attend a trade mission in Dubai. In addition, I was personally invited to be one of the panelists during AIM, which took place during the World Expo. The purpose of the trip was to explore trade opportunities between Miramar, Broward County, and the City of Fort Lauderdale. With Miramar having its own foreign trade zone at the Miramar Park of Commerce and hosting more Fortune 500 Companies than any city in the tri-county area, Miramar is well-positioned to expand and identify opportunities in this region. 11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Miramar Home for Sale By Kim Cox
A
ccording to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make
a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit sellerinspectionmistakes. com to hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 855-603-3984 and enter 1003. ■ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Greetings from your
Chamber of Commerce! By Patty Archen
A
s we begin our new chamber year this July, we are proud to say that we are home to over 630 business members in our chamber organizations. Since it became safe to gather again, we’ve celebrated over 25 grand opening Ribbon Cutting ceremonies, and we have many more planned over the next few months. All Ribbon Cuttings on our calendar are open to the public, and we invite you to celebrate with your new neighbors. We are strong proponents of supporting our local community and we urge you to contribute to the health and vitality of our local economy by shopping local, eating local, spending local, and enjoying local, especially with our local small businesses. Small Business is the backbone of our local economy - they are our neighbors and friends, and supporting small businesses in our area means supporting a local family’s dreams and successes. As higher fuel prices keep us from venturing too far from home this summer, consider exploring everything that southwest Broward has to offer in entertainment, culture, and food. Play “tourist” in your own backyard and discover things you may have never known were so close by! Check our online business directory by category for ideas on where to start. Over the next year, we will be renewing our accreditation with the US Chamber of Commerce. We’re currently a fourstar Accredited chamber and the only accredited chamber in Broward. This is a designation attained by only 3% of chambers nationwide, and it recognizes chambers for outstanding contributions toward positive change in their communities. Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. o parent in their right mind would drop off a child in the middle of Times Square or the Las Vegas Strip with little more than a safety talk and a directive to behave — but that is in essence what’s occurring when children are allowed to access the Internet, largely unsupervised and unprotected, on digital devices. Each Internetcapable device acts as an open door for millions of people, directly into your — and your child’s — life. An invaluable resource when used for education, entertainment, and discovery, parents must realize that the digital world is also a playground for skilled predators. Where kids go, so too do those who wish to harm them…which means digital devices pose a clear and present danger for kids. In fact, 1 in 5 children who touch a digital device is sexually solicited online. Chilling. Especially when you consider that more than a third of children under age 12 began interacting with a smartphone before they entered Kindergarten, and 20 percent of this same cohort have a smartphone of their own. While authorities and Internet watchdog groups across the world are doing all they can to crack down on online predation, parents and caregivers must be the first line of defense when it comes to cyber safety. I urge families and youth-serving organizations to use to learn about ways to keep children safe online. Safety starts with priming digital devices to ensure children are protected as much as possible on a very basic level. Prior to giving any Internet capable device to a child, conduct a thorough investigation into its capabilities and ensure you are the primary user/administrator so that nothing can be done without your approval (changing passwords or settings, downloading applications, etc.). Also remember that just because your child’s friends are using an app or game, does not mean it is safe. Apps may require location settings to be shared while in use or promote inter-app messaging between players or users. Predators have been known to groom unsuspecting kids on popular games like Fortnite or apps such as Snapchat. While safety settings help mitigate the opportunity for predators to contact children, constant monitoring of a child’s device is one of the most effective protective measures. Establishing an Internet code of conduct is also important for children of all ages to understand that their behavior online should mirror their behavior in the physical world. Questions to consider include: • Does your child understand that things posted on the Internet or sent on a digital device are permanent – even if the content is deleted from your child’s device? • Does your child know not to post any personal information about themselves (pictures, address, phone number, etc.) online? • Does your child understand that communicating with someone online that they do not know is very dangerous because that person could be anyone, even an adult? Online predators are smart — but with education, awareness, and advocacy, we can be smarter. When it comes to safety, conversations do not have to be scary or uncomfortable. Instead, bring kids to the table and empower them with rules and tools to navigate the digital world safely, securely, and with confidence. Above all else, ensure your child or teen knows how to recognize unsafe situations and that they know they can come to you to talk about ANYTHING without fear of getting in trouble. If you find that your child has been contacted by a predator, contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber Tip Line and submit a report at cybertopline.org or 1-800-THE-LOST. DROWNING is the leading cause of death in children, ages 1-4, after birth defects. DROWNING is a leading cause of death of individuals with autism. DROWNING is also the second-leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1-14, behind motor vehicle crashes.
