It's Time for School Again

I

t is hard to believe that the summer is already ending. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 16th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well. Neighborhood schools, charter schools, home school and virtual school are options now in addition to traditional private and public schools. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the area’s best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in addition to almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it. Sincerely,

Terry & Christy Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

EARLY VOTING IS OPEN AUG 13 - AUG 21

he 2022 Florida Primary Election will be held on August 23, 2022. This will be the first election since districts were changed as a result of the redistricting process. Redistricting takes place every ten years following the United States census. Political districts for state and federal offices are determined by the Florida Legislature based on a number of factors including population and the political objectives of those in power.

Closed Primary

Visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website to locate your voting place, confirm your voter registration status, and view your sample ballot. Florida is a “closed primary” state. In partisan office contests in a primary election, a voter may only vote for the candidates of the party in which he or she is registered. That’s

why different ballot styles exist in a primary election. The voter’s ballot style is tied to his or her party affiliation. Voters registered with no party affiliation (NPA) are not eligible to vote for partisan candidates in a primary election.

Early Voting

Early voting is a great way to cast your ballot ahead of time and works exactly the same way as voting on election day. Except, any Broward voter can vote at any early voting location. Early voting for the August primary election is from August 13 through August 21, 2022. Early voting is open from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm.

City of Miramar Celebrates

M

Independence Day

iramar residents came out in droves to celebrate the nation’s birthday at Miramar Regional Park. The annual event is a favorite for all members of the family and this year’s July 4th celebration was no exception. There was live music and a DJ spinning tunes at the Amphitheater while children of all ages enjoyed activities including bouncy houses, big slides, face painting, lawn games and more. Treats were provided by several different food trucks while residents grabbed their spots on the law for the grand final. “We get an opportunity to come together as a community,” said Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam, “and celebrate the founding of our nation and our nation’s independence.”

Gates opened at 5:00 pm with the music starting at 6:00 pm. The evening’s festivities concluded shortly after dark with an awe-inspiring fireworks display that kept every on the edge of their seats. We will see everyone next year!

Be sure to check Our City Miramar’s monthly calendar for exciting local events and activities.

BENEFITS OF RUNNING WITH ORTHOTICS By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.

W

hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well.

Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes,

flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone.

By Mayor Wayne M. Messam

s a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, I attended a groundbreaking mayoral summit on gun violence prevention that focused on holding the gun industry accountable for the illegal use of guns in our cities. I released new data on the manufacturers of guns used in crimes in Miramar and called on fellow mayors across the country to do the same. The summit was hosted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Co-Chair New York Mayor Eric Adams, in partnership with the African American Mayors Association. As mayors, we’re on the front lines of our gun violence epidemic, and it’s our first duty to do everything we can to keep our constituents safe. The gun industry has played a deadly role in furthering this epidemic, and the convening of mayors to figure out how we can hold them accountable for it was robust and laid the foundation for the development of solutions. There were 11 cities that published data on the manufacturers of crime guns in their cities. The top manufacturer of recovered crime guns was Glock in 9 of the 11 reporting cities. On average, over 1.5x more Glocks were recovered than the second leading manufacturer in each of those 9 cities. Five gun manufacturers accounted for over half of the recovered crime guns: Glock (16.8%), Taurus (12.5%), and Smith & Wesson (11.7%), Ruger (6.5%), and Polymer80 (3.7%). Collectively, these five manufacturers accounted for over 9,600 recovered crime guns. Additionally, with former U.S. Attorney Steve Dettelbach now sworn in as the first Senate-confirmed director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in nearly a decade, the mayors called on ATF to take key steps towards fulfilling its vitally important oversight role. Those measures include: • Giving cities the data and analysis needed to fully understand the flow of illegal guns and develop targeted interventions, and clarifying that the Tiahrt Amendment does not prevent cities from publicly releasing analysis of this important data; • Strongly implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) and aggressively enforcing the new ghost gun rule; • Cracking down on rogue gun dealers by requiring high-risk dealers to implement anti-trafficking standards; issuing a new Demand Letter to those high-risk dealers requiring them to share more information with ATF, and dramatically increasing gun dealer inspections to shut down the gun dealers who are violating the law; • Investigating the secondary commercial marketplaces that are the source of guns for gun traffickers, including online marketplaces and gun shows, and implementing a new regulation defining who is “engaged in the business” of selling firearms (a provision in BSCA) to clearly define the unlicensed sellers who are unlawfully selling firearms without a background check. Cities participating in the summit were: Miramar, New York City, St. Louis, Tampa, Kansas City, Little Rock, AR, Buffalo, NY, Chattanooga, TN, Chicago, Columbia, SC, Augusta, GA and Montgomery, AL. Yours in service,

Wayne M. Messam

■ MIRAMAR POLICE

K

BEHIND THE BADGE: K-9 KAISER

-9 Kaiser is a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois born in the Netherlands. He is affectionate and playful and although he is seven years old, he still has the vitality and fun-loving innocence of a puppy. Kaiser is a dual-purpose dog specializing in patrol and explosives detection. Although Kaiser has a sweet and playful personality, it’s all business when he’s at work. He has searched and located suspects of homicides, carjackings, robberies, and more. As a bomb dog, Kaiser has assisted numerous agencies in explosives detection. He has worked NASCAR races, Superbowl LIV, the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Jazz in the Gardens, visits involving dignitaries and high-ranking government officials and more. Kaiser has also responded to and cleared numerous bomb threats in schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Police K-9s are an essential part of law enforcement. Dogs, like Kaiser, are extraordinarily well-trained and are selected for their even temperament. They are brave, loyal, watchful and protective of their police officer handlers. K-9s offer a crucial advantage during dangerous searches, providing a greater reaction time for an officer. They also provide essential skills – with their noses – reducing the time needed to search buildings, a perimeter or to find people, helping keep our community safe. There is nothing more rewarding for Kaiser and his handler, Officer Edel Esponda, than doing demonstrations for elementary and middle school students. “When the children and teachers alike see Kaiser’s obedience, how he follows commands, how he heels and calmly listens as if he were a student himself, the teachers and children alike are in awe of him,” says Officer Esponda. “I tell them that I have the best job in the police department because I get to bring my best friend to work with me. It’s not uncommon for Kaiser to be called back to that particular school for 32 / Our City Miramar

another demo. Often, I receive packets of drawings from the children containing thank you notes and drawings often depicting the children with Kaiser, or me with Kaiser. This is very special to me,” Officer Esponda added. At the Citizens’ Policy Academy, Kaiser has been a hit as well. The residents who attend are often impressed with how he could apprehend a decoy without incident, and the next minute have that same decoy petting him. Kaiser’s well-trained and is a consummate professional at his job. He is not only Officer Esponda’s partner

at work, Kaiser is part of the family. “Given his sweet and fun-loving nature, I often find my wife and Kaiser on the floor with Kaiser wrapping his front legs around her in a hug. He absolutely loves my wife and goes crazy when he sees her.” Officer Esponda adds, “He is not only loved by my wife and I, but also by our respective families. Whenever he has been sick, we get calls from our children, our nephews and nieces, my parents, in-laws, and friends who love him as well.” Kaiser is truly cherished at home and at work, where he proudly serves our community.
