A Fresh Start to the New School Year
As summer draws to a close, it’s astonishing how quickly the new school year approaches. This year, Broward County students head back to school earlier than ever, with the first day set for August 12th. As we transition from beach days to school days, it’s time to gather supplies, pick out new lunch boxes, and finish those last-minute summer reading projects. Preparing for school has certainly evolved over the years, becoming more complex with the rise of technology and diverse educational choices.
The era of covering textbooks in brown paper bags is long gone. Today’s students are immersed in a digital world where learning materials are accessed through smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. With countless educational apps and online resources, students can explore a wealth of information right at their fingertips.
After-school activities have expanded far beyond traditional sports and music programs. Now, students can delve into coding classes, dual language programs, and much more. Parents, too, have a plethora of educational paths to consider. Alongside conventional public and private schools, options like charter schools, homeschooling, and virtual learning provide families with the flexibility to choose what best fits their needs.
Feeling overwhelmed by back-to-school preparations? Don’t worry—Our City has got you covered. This issue features our extensive Back-to-School Guide, filled with information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. Additionally, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of after-school activities, from arts and crafts to YMCA programs, designed to help you plan a successful school year.
While preparing for the upcoming school year, don’t forget to savor the final weeks of summer. Enjoy the sun, create lasting memories, and embrace the freedom of the season. Soon enough, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of learning and growth will begin.
So, take a moment to relax, enjoy the remaining days of summer, and know that you have everything you need to start the school year off right. Here’s to a fantastic and successful new school year!

HEADING BACK TO SCHOOL
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MIRAMAR POLICE DEPARTMENT
As summer draws to a close and the new school year approaches, the Miramar Police Department is gearing up to ensure a safe and smooth transition for students, parents, and educators alike. This time of year brings excitement and new beginnings, but it's also crucial for us to reinforce the importance of safety both in and around schools.
Safety First - Ensuring the safety of our children is a top priority. Whether they walk, bike, or take the bus to school, it's essential for everyone to remain vigilant and cautious on the roads. Drivers should be especially mindful of school zones, obeying speed limits and watching for pedestrians and crossing guards. By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.
School resource officers will be present, as they have been for decades, excited to see new and familiar faces. We were the first agency in Broward County to provide full-time school resource officers in every public school
campus (two officers at the high schools). Today, our charter schools benefit from our School Resource Officer program as well.
Community Engagement and Educational Initiatives - Although school safety is a top priority, it is important to note that school resource officers provide more than security. Teaching students life lessons, such as goal setting, character traits, and providing information on bullying and drug abuse prevention is a role that many officers have in our schools. These initiatives aim to empower students to make informed decisions and stay safe in all aspects of their lives.
Connecting with students, by bridging the gap between law enforcement and the next generation is important. We understand community engagement is key to building trust and meaningful relationships. Having our officers interact with students and staff on a daily basis has been beneficial to building that trust. Officers, many of whom are a
familiar face to students, often become a second support system outside the home - mentoring and counseling students and assisting them in times of need or crises.
School resource officers are not only located at the schools for students, but also for faculty, staff, and parents. Our officers handle issues and crimes that may occur within the school, but they are also a resource for families – providing information on services and outreach programs available to residents in need. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your children’s school resource officer.
Looking Ahead - As we embark on another school year, the Miramar Police Department remains dedicated to supporting our schools and community. From the first day of kindergarten to high school graduation and all the other milestones in between, we are here to listen, protect, and to serve. Together, let's make this school year a successful and safe one for everyone.
Hello Miramar residents, businesses, visitors, and friends, I’m thrilled to share the latest updates and highlights from our wonderful city. Miramar continues to thrive and prosper, thanks to the collective efforts of our residents, local businesses, and government. As we celebrate our achievements, we also face ongoing challenges head-on to ensure a brighter future for everyone.
Keeping a Healthy Environment: This past year, Miramar has made significant strides in various sectors. Our commitment to sustainable development is exemplified by the Race to Zero initiative, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. A crucial part of this commitment is our opposition to the proposed incinerator by the Airport West site, just 0.8 miles from West Miramar. This project would adversely affect 250,000 residents, including those in surrounding cities. The City of Miramar is prepared to take legal action and encourages everyone to keep this issue at the forefront and spread the word.
Visit Miramarfl.gov/NOBURN to sign the petition and find information on how to call the Miami-Dade Commissioners to express your dissatisfaction with this proposal.
Progress and Initiatives: We have enhanced our public safety measures by incorporating new technologies into our police force and expanding our fire department services. The unveiling of a brand-new state-of-the-art Mondo Super X 720 Olympic Track at the Ansin Sports
MIRAMAR UPDATE
By Mayor Wayne Messam
Complex showcases our world-class facility with a cutting-edge surface designed for peak performance and record-breaking times. This venue provides a state-of-the-art space for our athletes and community events, reinforcing our city's dedication to promoting health and wellness.
Economic development remains a cornerstone of Miramar’s growth. We have successfully attracted several Fortune 1000 companies, created high-paying jobs, and boosted our local economy. Our focus on affordable housing has led to the development of new residential projects, ensuring that all Miramar residents have access to quality living conditions. By fostering a business-friendly environment, we ensure that Miramar remains an attractive destination for businesses and visitors alike.
Addressing the Housing Crisis: One of the most pressing issues we face is the housing crisis. The rising cost of living and property values, while beneficial in some respects, have also placed an added tax burden on our residents. To combat this, we are working to provide workforce housing for young professionals and families. This initiative aims to make homeownership and quality living more accessible to those who are vital to our city's growth and prosperity.
Current Challenges: Public safety remains a critical concern. The prevalence of gun violence and the mental health crisis among our youth are pressing issues that we must address through community programs and legislative action. Additionally, the increasing frequency
and severity of powerful storms pose a significant threat. Our city has taken steps to improve our infrastructure and emergency response systems to better protect our residents during these natural disasters.
Police Department Hiring Grant: Earlier this year, the Miramar PD received a $3.75M grant from the Department of Justice for the hiring of 30 additional officers. This is very timely since as our city continues to grow the need for additional officers increases as well. The additional 30 officers is above and beyond the already budgeted positions.
Civic Engagement and Elections: As we approach the upcoming elections, it’s crucial for every resident to recognize the power of their vote. Civic engagement is the backbone of our democracy, and participation in local elections ensures that your voice is heard in shaping the future of Miramar. I encourage all eligible voters to educate themselves on the candidates and issues and to exercise their right to vote. Your involvement in civic matters not only influences our city's policies but also sets an example for future generations.
Looking Forward: The future of Miramar is bright, but it requires our continued dedication and collaboration. I urge all residents to stay informed, get involved in community initiatives, and support one another. Together, we can overcome our challenges and build a resilient, prosperous city for all.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to making Miramar a better place to live, work, and thrive.
