Remembering Our Veterans

A

ugust 30, 2021, marked the official end of the war in Afghanistan. The 20-year combat operation, along with the war in Iraq, left us with the most combat Veterans since the Vietnam war. In fact, there are about 75,000 Veterans living in Broward County, according to the US Census Bureau. The fact that these men and women volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way makes them worthy of our respect regardless of political ideology or whether or not you supported these wars. Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to thank the Veterans among us, or at the very least think of the contributions these men and women have made to our society. Unfortunately, for some of our Veterans, the wounds of war don’t show up until after they return home. The suicide rate among Veterans is almost twice that of non-veteran adults, with the gap growing over the past 15 years. It is clear that the horrors of war never go away for some. If you know a veteran, especially someone who has served in combat, take time to reach out to them on November 11th. Let them know that you care about them and value that they are part of your life. While the ghosts of their past can perhaps never be silenced, your friendship could be the light that keeps them going.

eing a Senior these days is tough enough. And moving from your home to Senior Living isn’t easy. On top of that, there’s this pandemic; crazy politics; the economy; the list goes on... Here’s the antidote! The brand new, luxurious, stress-free, peace-of-mind living that Seniors only get at America’s

top-rated community. And now it’s in Weston. We’re already over 75% reserved and time is running out if you want to take advantage of grand opening pricing and premium selection. Take a deep breath and smile. It’s about to get better!

Palace at Weston is OPEN!

O

pened in March 2021, residents of The Palace at Weston are treated like royalty. The five-star Senior Living Community features spacious, designer-appointed apartments and luxury resort-style amenities along with gourmet dining experiences and entertainment options that rival any cruise ship. The Palace offers three distinct buildings under one roof with Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care residences.

What exactly is The Palace at Weston?

It is a luxury Senior Living Community offering residents a continuum of care with Independent, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, in three separate buildings; each has its own entrance, amenities, and staffing geared to the care level it offers. We invite interested individuals to visit the building as soon as possible to experience the elegance that is found at The Palace at Weston.

Tell us about the residences at The Palace at Weston. The Palace offers some of the most spacious and well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida. There are two fully furnished one- and two-bedroom model apartments to show someone what an actual residence will include. Each features a kitchen with granite countertops and a stainless-steel appliance package, California-style custom closets, and luxurious bathrooms. Most residences include a den for extra space as well as a balcony.

The apartments sound beautiful, but what else does The Palace at Weston offer residents?

Ritz Carlton-style amenities and services are trademarks of The Palace Group and include an elegant dining room, state-ofthe-art fitness center, piano bar, theater, library, and computer center. A monthly fee includes entertainment and social activities, gourmet dining and wine, personal training, security, maintenance, transportation, house-keeping, and utilities, and satellite TV.

Please tell us more about the exciting entertainment options.

Each day is like living aboard a luxurious cruise ship. Many senior communities offer happy hours once a week; our communities offer happy hours every day with live entertainment. But that’s only happy hour. There are activities that take place every day, from morning into night, planned by a full-time activity department. We want people to have a wealth of choices and new experiences, from belly dancing to learning to play the piano to adult education classes with the University of Miami OSHER. People want to enjoy high-end amenities and want to be challenged mentally and physically.

How has The Palace adjusted in this Covid-19 world?

We are pleased to say that The Palace’s Senior Living Communities have weathered the Covid storm very well. To date, mostly all of our residents have been triplevaccinated as well as the vast majority of team members. Under the direction of our Chief Nursing Officer Marilyn Bustamante, The Palace continues to adhere to Covid-19 mitigation protocols, while pro-viding the socially engaging lifestyle that The Palace Communities are known for.

What else distinguishes The Palace? We bring over 40 years of Senior Living experience to what we do. Jacob and Helen Shaham, founders and owners of The Palace Group, are local residents who are passionately involved in the dayto-day operations of every one of their communities. The Palace at Weston is their tenth community.

What industry awards has The Palace Group earned?

The Palace communities have received scores of notable awards and recognition including the National Association of Home Builders’ prestigious BEST Senior Living

and BEST Independent Living Community in the country. The Palace also has been recognized for four consecutive years by Gallup as one of the Most Exceptional Workplaces in the world. Furthermore, we seek the highest standards offered by the senior housing industry such as The Governor’s Gold Seal Award, CARF Accreditation, and Joint Commission Accreditation.

Anything else you want readers to know about The Palace at Weston? Please visit our brand new, magnificent community and see for yourself why you, or your loved one, should live at The Palace at Weston. We offer peace of mind for loved ones and carefree, vibrant lifestyle with some of the largest, well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida.

COMMUNITY NEWS

P

Pembroke Pines Transitions to Waste-to-Energy Recycling

embroke Pines residents will see big changes in waste pickup beginning in January. Beginning January 2 all residential trash and recycling materials collected from single-family residences by Waste Pro will be sent to the Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy facility

located on SR7/441 where it will be converted into electricity by incineration. The transition from traditional recycling to incineration to produce energy is the result of changes in the global recycling industry. China has stopped purchasing recycled items creating a supply glut with future purchasers for commonly recycled items. Recycling costs have tripled due to low, and in some cases, no demand in the global marketplace for materials such as glass and plastics. In addition, if recycled items are contaminated with waste, the contaminated recyclables end up in a landfill. 10% to 40% of the recyclable materials collected in Pembroke Pines are contaminated, making them non-recyclable, according to the city.

The Wheelabrator South Broward Wasteto-Energy plant will continue to recycle metal materials while incinerating waste to generate as much as 66 megawatts of electricity used to power up to 38,000 homes in Broward County. The City of Pembroke Pines is requiring residents to co-mingle both waste and recycling in their existing green garbage carts. Even though Waste Pro will not be collecting waste and/or recycling from the blue carts, the City is requesting residents to keep their blue recycling carts for the time being. The City is collaborating with Broward County and other municipalities to determine the feasibility of opening a government-run recycling facility in Broward County. Should such a facility open that requires the separation of recyclable materials, the City of Pembroke Pines will be in a state of readiness to participate as we will still have the blue recycling carts.

It read “October 28 will be a horrible day for you.”

The message was followed by a series of progressively more aggressive messages. Connor shrugged them off as probably from a friend attempting a rather lame joke and went to bed. The situation was no laughing matter, however, when Connor was pulled out of class the next day to be interviewed by Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies. Other students had received similar messages, were frightened, and alerted

a school guidance counselor. In the end, the two teens who were responsible for sending the messages faced week-long suspensions. It could have been much worse. Speak to Your Kids Broward County Schools, the BSO, and local police departments implore parents to sit down with their children and discuss the potential consequences of sending threatening messages over the internet. Four students in Pembroke Pines alone have been arrested and charged for making school threats. Kids as young as 12 years old have been charged with multiple felonies. In many such cases, the perceived threats were all just a joke-gone-wrong. “Even if you are joking, making threats to school property or others will not be tolerated,” said Officer Randy Vedrine in a video posted to Facebook by the Pembroke Pines Police Department, “they are an arrestable offense which could follow you for the rest of your life.” Helping kids understand the potential consequences of what may seem like an innocuous comment is important to maintaining a safe learning environment for all.

Harvest Drive Serves Thanksgiving Dinner

ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 170 Broward County public schools and many area private schools will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. 500 of the families are

also given the opportunity to “shop for free” at Harvest Drive November Boutiques. The recipient families select gently worn clothing and shoes, gently used books and household items for their entire family. With generous donations, Harvest Drive is now able to also provide a selection of new toys. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods and grocery gift

cards. Collections began during mid October and will conlcude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of the Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower

them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact. Members of the local community is encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items. Local schools serving as distribution sites include: • Piper High School • Plantation High Schoo • Western High School • Strahan High School

Hoops 4 Hope

he Hoops 4 Hope initiative was created by the Miramar Police Department, in partnership with the Miramar Police Athletic League. In 2016, Sergeant Brittany Parker had the idea of sharing her love of basketball to bridge the gap between law enforcement and our next generation. An annual fundraiser includes a basketball tournament and college fair to promote higher education. The 3-on-3 basketball tournament has seen teams representing local businesses, South Florida police departments, city of Miramar employees and local high school students. The initiative has also awarded numerous scholarships to students attending Miramar high schools. “I love seeing the community unite to make a difference in our youth. The tournament is a great bonding experience. Awarding scholarships helps students with a little extra money for their education or incidentals,” said Sgt. Parker. The Hoops for Hope Basketball Tournament date will be announced in the coming months. However, students can now apply for our 6th Annual Hoops for Hope Scholarship.

Flat Feet in Children and Adults

T

he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops. CAUSES: Flatfeet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid or psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking is a symptom. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night, is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may also be seen.

By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M

SIGNS: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flatfeet are usually associated with knockknees and abnormal shoe wear. RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is also common with aging. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness may also result. TREATMENT: The first step is identifying the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible. Other treatments include: wearing proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity; physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination; stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility; and surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function.

MIRAMAR STATE OF THE CITY

E

very year I have the honor of presenting the State of the City address to our residents and business community. It’s a tradition I began when I was elected mayor in 2015. This visual report highlights the successes of Miramar over the past fiscal year, the economic development progress of our economy and the investments made in our city to enhance and sustain a high quality of life for our residents. This year’s State of the City address will be hosted by Space Coast Credit Union in their Miramar headquarters at the Miramar Park of Commerce at 5:30 PM on November 10, 2021. Space Coast Credit Union is located at 10600 Marks Way, Miramar, FL. Despite the tremendous impact of the pandemic on our city, I am pleased to share that the State of Miramar is Strong. This year’s address will feature success stories in Economic Development, shed light on our Business Climate, provide updates on Resident Services, Impacts and Responses to COVID-19, highlight our opportunities and

the future of Miramar. It is without question that Miramar remains on fire. The 2020 census has our population growth to nearly 150,000 residents and our economy remains one of the fastest growing in America with the continued addition of high paying jobs. Industry-leading companies continue to move to Miramar with salaries averaging $80,000. If you have never attended any of my State of the City addresses, I encourage you to do so. Trust me, you will learn so much about your city. Did you know Miramar received the highly coveted “All America City Designation” and one not but two Smart City Awards being one of only 50 cities worldwide to do so? Find out how we did it at this year’s State of The City address. You may RSVP here: sotc2021.eventbrite.com As I reflect on the progress of the city and our response to the pandemic, I am just as resolved in continuing to lead the city commission and city the administration as I am to ensure that we invest in the future of Miramar. We have already begun the planning and ground-

work necessary to prepare for the next twenty years and beyond. We must continue our momentum, we cannot rest. Dear Readers, We started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day, “which is every November 1st and recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, families, organizations, and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of dreams and in their lives, adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. On a more serious note, since the start of this school year, several Broward students have been arrested for making threats against schools, some from our very own city. Social media posts are not a joke, not a prank and each threat is taken very seriously. This message has been driven home multiple times, yet this behavior continues. Our schools face a myriad of challenges in this time of pandemic, but threats against schools and students shouldn’t be one of them. Law enforcement, school administrations, parents, and students are all in this together. I strongly recommend that parents talk to their children and advise them on the life-altering consequences these threats can have on their chances of getting accepted into college, joining the military, and/or passing a background check for a potential career all because of a prank or joke. Reality has shown us that violence does occur in schools throughout the country, so law enforcement has an obligation to follow through on every threat. So, parents, please again make sure your children understand the seriousness and consequences of such threats. One fake threat is one too many. Talk to each other, monitor your child’s social media and please say something if you see something. We are now in the final month of hurricane season. At the time of this writing, we have been fortunate in avoiding the many hurricanes and storms that have formed this year. Please remember to always be prepared. It’s the price we pay for living in paradise. Information is at your fingertips at www.ppines.com/ hurricane. On a final note, everyone is invited to attend our celebration to honor our country’s veterans past and present at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Thursday, November 11, 2021, 12 Noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way. The ceremony, to honor those who have kept us safe, features the presentation of colors, musical performances, and guest speakers. Please stay safe by wearing masks and social distancing. I would also like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

T

By State Representative Robin Bartleman

his month I will be traveling to Tallahassee for two more committee weeks in preparation for the legislative session. Last month I received the Policy Pioneer Award from the Florida Policy Institute for advocating on behalf of children’s health equity and wellbeing. The Florida League of Cities also awarded me the Legislative Appreciation Award for supporting local decisions on the Local Administration and Veteran Affairs committee. The Florida School Board Association awarded me Legislator of the Year for fighting against high stakes education and protecting our public schools. Last month I shared with you my bill to support our first responders. This month, I want to update you on our work in District 104 and what I am doing to provide quality, affordable health care for our kids. Democracy Day was a coordinated effort by volunteers and lawmakers in response to Senate Bill 90. Last month, my office canvassed to educate Broward residents on Florida’s new restrictive voting bill. If you vote by mail or use an absentee ballot, make sure that you request your ballot each general election cycle as per the new law.

Visit www.browardvotes.gov to check your voter status, request a Vote-By-Mail ballot, track your ballot, and learn everything you need to make your vote count. The Supervisor of Elections office staff can be reached M-Fri 8:30-5pm at (954) 357-VOTE (8683). I joined my friends and former colleagues on the Broward School Board for the FTX Charity Hackathon Kickoff. FTX Charity Hackathon is open to students ages 13-19 from Broward, Palm Beach, and MiamiDade. The competition challenges students to create a charity or improve an existing one focusing on physical and mental health. Students on the top 5 teams will be awarded $15,000 each and the winning charity project wins one million dollars! To learn more, visit ftxcharityhackathon.com. I filed HB 125 to expand KidCare, Florida’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, so that our working families have access to affordable health care. The minimum wage will incrementally rise to $15 over the next four years, yet this small increase in salary is not enough to help working families cover rising housing, food and childcare costs. It will also unintentionally push working families off of KidCare. No family should have to decide between a raise and their child’s healthcare. This

will strain Florida’s economy and health insurance programs. My bill will expand affordable coverage and create additional tiers that families can buy into. Working families are not looking for handouts, just hand-ups. Happy Thanksgiving! While the coronavirus makes it difficult to celebrate in person with family and friends this Thanksgiving, it also makes it all the more important to express your gratitude to the ones you love. So whether it is around the dinner table or over zoom, share with your loved ones how grateful you are for their presence in your life. I wish you all a safe and blessed holiday. With love,

Robin, Emma, & Sarah.
