Happy Holidays! BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

T

he holiday season is upon us. Living in such culturally and religiously diverse communities, the winter holidays can have very different meanings to all of our readers. One thing that seems to be constant, regardless of faith or heritage, is our tendency to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Our family tradition is to celebrate on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a white elephant gift exchange. If you’ve never played, it’s quite simple and entertaining. Participants bring a wrapped gift. Each player, in turn, gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. Feel free to adopt our family’s holiday tradition as your own. It is always great fun. Speaking of adopting holiday traditions… Our kids beg us each year to celebrate Festivus, the secular holiday made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Coincidentally, it is also celebrated on Christmas Eve Eve. Our 16-year-old son is particularly interested in adopting Festivus’ “airing of the grievances”; so far we have successfully resisted! Our family, along with our extended family at Our City Media, wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season. We hope you enjoy this treasured time with loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivus! Best wishes for a festive and safe holiday season.

ince July, Miramar Fire-Rescue has been working with the Chamberlain College of Nursing students on a joint project to help young pediatric patients during an emergency. Together Miramar Fire-Rescue Firefighter/Paramedic Gina Hudson and Nadine Cesaire, Master Instructor II/SIGMA Phi Pi Miramar Campus Ambassador created SAFE (Stuffed Animals For Emergencies). “Since we work so closely with nurses in the emergency field, often handing our patient care over to them when we transport to the hospital, it was a no brainer for the students to reach out to us for a partnership,” said Hudson. The three-month project resulted in Sigma Phi Pi Honor Society Chamberlain College nursing students generously donating 100 handmade stuffed bears to Miramar Fire-Rescue. The cuddly companions will now ride on all trucks and be a part of the firefighters’ safety kit “Emergency calls always bring some fear and uncertainty to patients, but small children always bring added challenges. We never want to make a situation worse but sometimes do when trying to treat children. Already upset because they are sick or hurt, letting strangers check them out pretty much sets them over the top. Trying to gain trust with them is often harder than treating their actual emergency,” Hudson explained. “This project was a wonderful opportunity for our students at Chamberlain to embody Sigma’s mission of service and Chamberlain’s culture of care by partnering together two trusted professions (nursing and firefighters)

to spread some joy to our community children in need during emergencies,” explained Nadine Cesaire, MBA, MSN, APRN, FNP-C | Instructor. “These stuffed animals are just as important as any of the medical equipment we use when it comes to treating small children. During times of emergencies, children add additional challenges to our treatments. These animals help us to gain trust with a scared child and also provides a distraction while we evaluate and treat our youngest patients,” added Hudson. 14 DECEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

T

he City of Miramar Police Department (MPD) and Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis joined forces to make sure city residents are safe and comfortable with their local law enforcement. Earlier this year, the astute vice mayor made a motion to implement a “Body-Worn Camera Program”. Her second attempt for this initiative had a majority vote which led to the long-awaited program to become a law in the City of Miramar. “During the pilot phase of the program, we were able to see the value of the body-worn camera by one of our officers. A situation that could have been made much worse had it not been for the quick actions of our officer and the fact that he was wearing the camera. In this instance, there was no loss of life and the suspect was identified and apprehended,” explained the Vice Mayor. In October, Vice Mayor Davis then went on to host a ‘CommUnity and Cops’ forum to promote open dialogue between Miramar residents and the MPD. Forum panelists included Dexter M. Williams,

Miramar’s Chief of Police; Jack Tuter, Chief Judge Florida 17th Judicial Circuit Court; Brenda Forman, Broward County Clerk of Courts; Gregory Tony, Broward County Sheriff, among other notable Broward County leaders. “This was an excellent opportunity for our community to discuss important public safety issues with law enforcement and judicial experts,” said Chief Dexter M. Williams. Discussion topics included the “Use of Body Cameras”, Texting While Driving”, “Marijuana versus Hemp”, “Voting Rights Restoration”, “Adult Civil Citations” as well as “Do’s & Don’ts When Stopped by A Cop”, and “Gun Buyback Programs” which was the perfect opportunity to announce, “Guns for Funds”. The assertive and 100% anonymous program, also hosted by Vice Mayor Davis, takes firearms off the street in exchange for compensation on-site. Just last month, Miramar residents had three opportunities to turn in their firearms. For each handgun, assault rifle, or shotgun surrendered, they could receive a gift card valued up to $150. There was no limit to the number of guns dropped off, no questions asked, and

no identification necessary. “Our Community & Cops Forum gave our residents a chance to let their voices be heard especially on important current social issues affecting our community and our families. Additionally, the ‘Guns for Funds Program’ was a great opportunity to get guns off the streets. We would rather people turn in a gun they no longer have a need for rather than run the risk of having it stolen and ending up in the wrong hands. We are committed to ensuring that residents feel safe in their community and are protected from gun violence,” added Vice Mayor Davis.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

The psychedelic theme prompted real estate brokers to dress appropriately as they ventured out to receive an up-close and personal look at Broward County’s premium commercial real estate during the annual tour before attending the grand party. “The Broward County Bus Tour is ideal for networking and deal-making,” said NAIOP South Florida Executive Director Jules R. Morgan. “Brokers can sit across from each other in a relaxed, fun, and productive environment as they are educated about the state of various sub-markets throughout Broward County and get up close and personal with some of the newest commercial properties.” Following registration, “deckedout” brokers boarded a double-decker

ASK THE EXPERT

Heel Spur Syndrome and Plantar Fasciitis BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

P

lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. It is often caused by excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear, as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time, is often a contributing factor. The symptoms of plantar fasciitis include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch in the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as wearing proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided, may be prescribed. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. A custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury may be recommended. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are utilized to splint

the foot while sleeping to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally treatment may involve immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on the level of pain and discomfort. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, shockwave therapy (EPAT) or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected, and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Your 2020 Resolutions BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE s the holidays approach and 2019 comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions include walking 10,000+ steps each day, eating a cleaner diet or spending more time with your children. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you can answer the following: Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I created a way to reach important family and financial goals? Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? When and how will my spouse, children, and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement?

A

▸  ▸  ▸  ▸

Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! Please also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts, and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. LOVE MIRAMAR! I love the city and what it stands for. It provides a place of sanctuary to raise a family. It provides peace for those who desire to feel safe. It provides stability for those seeking to be employed and finally, it provides fun for those of us who want entertainment after a hectic week. Miramar has become a base for families to grow, and as we grow, we invest in our future. This was an amazing year for our agency and the community we serve. I am proud to announce that we are on target with yet another great year of reduced crime rates. Our officers have worked hard to keep you safe, but we couldn’t do it without your collaboration. We would also like to applaud our community for supporting our safety campaign of “See Something, Say Something,” which has proven to be a force in crime prevention. Way to go Miramar! As we close-out 2019, I would like to recap some of the investments that have

an you believe it’s December already? Where has the year gone? We here at Miramar Fire-Rescue would like to wish you and your families the happiest of holidays and a Happy New Year! We would also like to take the time to go over some holiday safety tips with you as well. Like the song by Andy Williams says, “This is the most wonderful time of the year!” We feel like it’s a time where everyone comes together to celebrate their family traditions, or, make new traditions. We want you to enjoy everything that comes with the season, but we also want you to stay safe. One of the biggest causes of fire this time of year are holiday decorations. We all love to put up a tree and lights on the inside as well as the outside of our homes and businesses. And who doesn’t love a yard full of blow-up decorations? When decorating, take the time to inspect all electrical wires and extensions for any damage. If there is any wire exposure through the rubber coating, then it’s best to replace the entire strand. Also, remember to not overload the outlets with too many plugs and splitters. The circuit can become overwhelmed and trip or short out. When it comes to outside decorations, please make sure the labeling says indoor/outdoor. December still brings us rain and moisture and indoor decorations will quickly short out and cause a potential fire. Another big tip to remember is to never leave the tree or lights on overnight. The newer LED lights are much safer than the older traditional strands but there is still a chance for overheating, especially when plugging multiple strands together. Another thing we enjoy this time of year is all the delicious food! ‘Tis the time of year to indulge in all the sweets the season brings with lots of cookie baking and meals prepared for celebrating, but kitchen fires often increase this time of year. To prevent this, always be certain the stove and oven are turned off when finished. If a fire starts in the oven, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR! Simply turn the oven off and call us. If you follow these directions, nine out of ten times, the fire is out or contained before we even arrive. If a fire starts in a pot or pan, you can put it out by either covering it with a lid or pouring baking soda on it to smother the fire out. With celebrating sometimes comes alcohol. Please drink responsibly. A joyous time of year can quickly become a nightmare for those who lose a loved one to an accident caused while drinking and driving. There are many options out there between designated drivers and rideshares. There is just no excuse. We at Miramar Fire-Rescue enjoy watching our community celebrate the holidays in a safe, joyous way. Please remember these tips we’ve shared with you and we will all have enjoyable and safe holidays! Miramar Fire Rescue is located at 14801 SW 27th Street, Miramar, FL 33027. For more information please call (954) 602-4802. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1. MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Happy Holidays are Right Here in Miramar! BY WAYNE M. MESSAM, MAYOR OF MIRAMAR

Month

A

s we enter the last month of the year, it never ceases to amaze me how fast a year can go by. Seems like yesterday we brought in the new year and now most of us have already celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and many other special moments. December is perhaps the most festive month of the year. It is the month we celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and other religious and secular occasions. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate during the holiday season, it is a time we can all spend with family. Take some time off from work, be with loved ones, and plan for the new year. The best part of it all, are the memories we create during these times. So, make it a special holiday and make those memories. In an effort to provide residents an opportunity to meet neighbors whom they may not yet have met, I am bringing “The Longest Table to Miramar.” This is a community-inspired event being hosted by the Mayor’s office in order to help begin promoting a sense of “place and community” here in Miramar. The event is a dinner discussion held outside in what will be the longest dinner table ever assembled in Miramar. Hosted on Sunday, January 26, 2020, outside of City Hall, neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers will take part in a tasty dinner discussion under the stars. Residents are encouraged pull up a seat and simply engage with one another in discussion over a meal. Sparking up a conversation with someone whom you’ve probably never met is the greatest way to step into another person’s own personal world. “The Longest Table” is meant for talking over experiences and sharing a laugh or two while enjoying delicious meals in an aesthetically comforting environment. I highly encourage residents to attend and to invite a guest. Conversations take at least two parties and your voice will make the best part. The more diversified we aim to be, the higher the uniqueness we present. This event has been a hit in other communities and with Miramar’s diverse population, I know we can be successful as well. Let’s use this time to have an open forum in the City of Miramar so that everyone can feel welcome as they should be, right here in the city. Did I tell you the food will be as good as the discussions? To be notified of the registration date for this event please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov. As we approach the closing of the year, we greet the genesis of a new decade. With hearts open, I urge you all to go forward with not only the standard New Year resolutions but more. Strive to improve every aspect of your life. Start the changes you’ve been putting off. Explore the community and figure out ways to give back even more. Never forget that anything you will ever need is Right Here … in Miramar! Angela and I wish you and yours a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year! Yours in Service,

THE WORLD’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE™ This past summer Pearl Fischer left sunny South Florida for an adventure out at sea. She embarked upon the Symphony of the Seas ®, but not without her copy of Our City Miramar. Royal Caribbean’s largest passenger cruise ship in the world sailed to the Eastern Caribbean and made stops in Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, and Haiti. Between island hopping, exploring, and shopping, spending time aboard the luxurious line relaxing in “Central Park” was fun just the same.

SEEN ON SCENE

LATIN NIGHTS

According the latest census, Hispanics make up over 37% of the Miramar population and a third of the City of Miramar’s Hispanic residents are native born. The Hispanic culture and music were alive and on display as City of Miramar Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis hosted Latin Nights: A Gala Celebrating the Contributions of Hispanic-Americans during Hispanic Heritage month in October.

MIRAMAR PD ALWAYS ON THE BEAT

Residents can always find the Miramar Police Department around town. Whether they are supporting youth in our schools during summits and career days or just grabbing a “Cup of Joe”, they love engaging with Miramar’s citizens. K9 Okar is also always in the spirit as he loves hanging out in the community.

BOOK WORMS

YOUR HIGHNESS Her Majesty the Queen, Consul General of Britain Nicolette Brent, and Maxi Priest received the Key to Broward County by Vice Mayor Holness during the Black British Heritage celebration at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center while Alexandra P. Davis, City of Miramar Vice Mayor had the honor of presenting the “Outstanding Achievement in Arts & Entertainment Award” to the English reggae superstar artist.

SPOOKTACULAR EVENING

Commissioner Colbourne participated in the annual Read for the Record® at Silver Shores Childcare Center in Miramar where she read the book “Thank You, Omu!” to the eager students. The annual campaign was launched over a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for EVERY child.

Hundreds of ghouls and boys enjoyed trick-or-treating at Miramar’s River Run Park. The annual event hosted by Commissioner Yvette Colbourne is always a treat!
