Let’s Celebrate Earth Day
E
very year, on April 22nd, people around the world recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. Earth Day, as we call it today, was proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and founded in 1970. Since then, it has evolved from a day for teachers to focus on nature to a global rally day for environmentalists. Locally, Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the wonders of South Florida. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a few miles away. The Everglades, which is both an exciting natural refuge to visit and a critically important ecosystem, is right in our back yard. Just off shore, there are miles of coral reefs full of fish and wildlife. Preserving the beauty and splendor of our natural environment is critical for the continued enjoyment of this wonderful community. This year, let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking a step back from our fast-paced digital world and recognizing the splendor of the environment around us. You could visit the Long Key Nature Center in Davie, take an airboat ride through the Everglades, dip your toes in the surf, or simply spend a few hours at one our wonderful local parks. Whatever you do, feel fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sincerely,

embers of the 124th Infantry Regiment of Florida’s National Guard returned home to a heroes’ welcome after spending a year overseas. The troops spent the last year deployed to Africa as part of Operation Freedom Sentinel at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. Camp Lemonnier is home to the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa and is the only permanent U.S. base in Africa. The base is operated by the Navy and is the lynchpin of counter-terrorism operations throughout the region. The unit, known as the Hurricanes, was joined by forces from several allied countries in addition to U.S. Special Operations forces. The soldiers endured multiple challenges while deployed. In addition to the grueling operational schedule, the unit learned to adopt to the Djibouti climate. Djibouti average temperatures range near 100 degrees, much hotter than even here in South Florida. The Hurricanes’ busses were escorted by Broward Sherriff’s Office cruisers to the Readiness Center in Miramar where family and friends were awaiting their arrival. Upon entering the gates at the Center, the soldiers’ busses past a fence of yellow ribbons and welcome home banners and then were saluted by Miramar Fire Department with a water cannon. Sargent Lictor Figueroa was greeted by his wife Andrea and one year old daughter Live, who anxiously awaited his safe return. “Letting him go was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do- it broke my heart. So having him coming home is like having my heart back” stated Andrea, “I’m feeling anxious and excited to finally have him in my arms again.” As the busses turned the corner and came into view a roar of cheers, waving flags and a few tears greeted the soldiers. After a brief ceremony, the unit was dismissed to their families for hugs and kisses while being showered with red, white and blue confetti.

New Mayor Sees Miami Lakes Becoming the Model Municipality of Florida BY: TERRY JAILLET
M
Mayor Manny Cid
iami Lakes voters emphatically voted for change on November 29th by electing hometown son Manny Cid by a margin of 3 to 1 in a run-off election. Cid, a high-energy 33-year-old, has lived in Miami Lakes since he was five years old. During the campaign, he positioned himself as a reformer and has taken steps to make the local government more open. Immediately after taking office, Cid had the door to his office removed. This symbolic change was meant as a signal to constituents that their government will always be available to them. He also opened the mayor’s office on Saturdays and began using modern communication technologies like Facebook Live to make it easier for people to engage with his office. The Mayor reflected back to his youth during an interview last week, “I remember walking on Main Street every weekend. We would grab a slice of Pizza and stop at Blockbuster. Blockbuster was the place to be!” The mayor’s push for major redevelopment of the downtown area is, in part a bid to reclaim the walkable Miami Lakes of his past. “Redevelopment is long overdue. We want to attract new restaurants, new retail and small businesses.” The centerpiece of Miami Lakes’ push to attract
business is the town’s new marketing campaign, ‘Where Business Grows.’ The campaign is funded by a public-private partnership, where major local employers teamed with the Town to promote the community to the greater area. Cid pointed out four key drivers when asked why a business should choose to locate in Miami Lakes. He first emphasized the town’s favorable tax rate, “we have the third or fourth lowest tax rate in Miami Dade County.” He also mentioned highlight Miami Lakes’ central location at the junction of Interstate 75 and the Ronald Regan Turnpike. “We are minutes from two airports and a relatively short drive to the port of Miami.” Cid’s final two points focused on Miami Lakes’ well-educated labor force. “Miami Lakes has the best public schools in Dade county.” He also pointed out that 32% of residents have a bachelor’s degree, one of the highest rates in the area. The Cid administration’s long term goal is to make Miami Lakes a model municipal government. He sees his focus on open government, attracting new business and redevelopment as the first steps in making that a reality. From the looks of things, he is just getting started.
“In 1997, with only a handful of people, Inktel was founded here in Miami Lakes. Since then, we’ve opened offices throughout the United States and we’ve grown to employ 400 people locally. With its diverse local labor pool, great schools, fabulous restaurants, beautiful parks, and convenient access to airports and highways, Miami Lakes is a town that truly understands the meaning of customer service.”
“beautiful, safe and strategically located, miami lakes is a great call for expanding businesses.” WHERE BUSINESS GROWS

Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park to Open Soon COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DAVID VOLZ
M
iramar residents will soon be able to enjoy a new amphitheater set in the 172 acre Miramar Regional Park. It was built so that drivers on I-75 and residents in western Miramar will be able to see the canopy. The new amphitheater has the capacity to hold 5,000 people. Of that number, about 3,000 will be seated under a 90-foot canopy. An additional promenade will hold 2,000 more. The $7.4 million cost for the project is being funded from Miramar’s 2013
Revenue Bond. It is considered a capital improvement project and will open in early summer. “We are really excited about this new amphitheater,” said Natasha Hampton, spokesperson for Miramar. “This is considered an attraction for the local community and tourists from around the world.” The amphitheater will be one of the largest in the region and will serve as a venue for a wide variety of performances. Local schools, faith groups and organizations will be able to hold events in addition to major performances. “This will be great for the people of Miramar. We will be able to have a many events. In the past, we have only had portable stages for shows,” said Hampton. The city hopes the amphitheater will make Miramar a destination center. An important goal is to make the City attractive not only to nearby visitors, but to people from all over the nation and the world. “We will have the facilities to support the overall tourism and development of Miramar. “This will beautify the park and will add value to the residents of the City.” There are other projects in Miramar as well. The City is installing a band shell, a kid-friendly splashpad, enhanced lighting and brand new restrooms at Shirley Branca Park. The improvements will cost about $1.9 million. Of that money, $1.5 million will come from a Broward County Revenue Grant and $400,000 will come from the general fund. These new developments are focused on providing more recreational and entertainment opportunities for residents as well as visitors.

A Sweet Way to Help Diabetics COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DAVID VOLZ
M
onica Morrison understands the challenges faced by people with diabetes better than almost anyone. She has juvenile diabetes herself. Monica also has a passion to help others. This passion led to her founding Sugar Sniffers, an organization that provides service dogs to people with diabetes. These dogs alert diabetics when their blood sugar gets too low or too high. The dogs are trained to paw their owner if they notice a blood sugar problem. “I have a service dog named Copper and my dog helps me,” said Morrison. “My family is not around much. Copper will alert me if my blood sugar gets too low. He is actually a rescue dog.” Morrison did allot of research and worked with a trainer to make Copper an effective diabetic alert dog. During her work, Morrison discovered that service dogs can costs as much as $30,000. She realized that many people could not afford them. “I want to provide these dogs at a lower cost, about $2,000,” she said. “I help people find the proper dog from a shelter and then start training the dog to respond when a person’s blood sugar is too high or too low.”
After Morrison goes with the individual and pick up the service dog and help with basic training, she teaches the dog scent training. “If you are diabetic, you use your saliva with low blood sugar so the dog has a sample to work with. We put the saliva on a cotton ball and let the dog learn to sense the smell of the saliva from the person the dog will help. Once the dog learns the scent, we teach the dog how to alert the person who is having a problem.” The dog can be trained to do whatever alert type is effective. A dog can be trained to paw or nudge a person with their nose. “If there is nobody around that understands diabetes, the dog is there to help before you get into a bad situation. BY DAVID VOLZ

L
ate April is going to be an exciting time for members of the Flanagan High School Symphonic Winds. These students are enthusiastically getting ready to participate in the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. While in Ohio they will compete against 40 top notch high school music organizations from around the country and Japan. During the WGI the Flanagan Symphonic Winds will perform while in motion and their flutist will also sing. This will all take place indoors in the University of Dayton Arena. Members of the Flanagan Symphonic Winds are looking forward to the trip, hanging out with fellow musicians, and showing off all their hard work. “It takes a lot of effort and mental discipline to perform well,” said Randy Rosano, a first chair trumpet player and a captain of the Flanagan Winds. “We practice a lot and we have done well.” Freya Pan, Flanagan Winds flute player who will also sing during the competition has a sincere passion for music. She feels “It takes desire to express oneself to be a good musician”. Brian Ardilla, who plays bari saxophone and is a captain said, “a desire to be the best is important. We want to perform well and we work hard at it. I love being a part of the Flanagan Winds.” The Flanagan band program has been very successful over the years. It has earned top ratings at local, state and national competitions. Best of luck Flanagan Winds!

• Organic Facial ($50) – This skin therapy improves the texture and appearance of skin using the finest organic products. Wellness Before Medicine BY DR. CASTILLO-PLAZA
I
will be writing a monthly series on the newest direction in medicine – wellness. It has become a passion for me to practice and should become a passion for you to learn about and demand. Over the years of practicing medicine and moving forward in my natural progression of life, I have learned about things that affect most of us in the same way. Do you have a mother with Alzheimer’s, a father with arthritis in his knees, a family member that died from a heart attack, or a co-worker who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer? Well, I can say “yes” to all of these. Do you know that most of these conditions, if not all, did not have to happen? All of them can eventually happen to you and your children. You will be left feeling as sad as you feel today if you don’t do something about it now! Isn’t it obvious that medicine has prolonged the number of years people live, but has not improved or prolonged their health? Isn’t it also a familiar experience to go to your physician with an array of concerns and everyday symptoms not related to any specific illness, such as, “I’m always tired. I forget everything. I don’t want sex anymore. Everything bothers me.” The most common answer you receive in response to your concerns is, “You are fine. Your blood tests are okay. You are no longer 20-years old.” There are many things that we as physicians were not taught in medical school and specialty residencies. We were just educated to identify the disease and treat it, medically or surgically. It has been my own job to learn from life and from my patients that medicine clearly has different aspects and treating them for a disease or illness is one of them. Optimizing how patients feel, live and function, as well as providing them with healthy aging, is called “wellness.” Let medicine treat diseases, but have wellness prevent diseases!
What is wellness?
To me, wellness is a “personal optimization” or stage of well-being. It is an active process through which we become aware of, and make choices toward a healthier, happier, more successful, and longer life. When wellness refers to medicine, I call it “wellness plus” or integrated wellness.
What do you mean by “wellness before medicine”?

APRIL 2017 | OUR CITY MIRAMAR
Years of well-being precede any disease and the practice of wellness can prevent the need for medicine. Today, diseases like Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, breast cancer and all their associated medical conditions are all preventable, but not curable. Together, they take the greatest toll on our deaths, family imposed burden and medical expenditures in the U.S., and they also confirm the lack of commitment to wellness in our country.
How is a wellness practice different from a traditional medical practice?
A wellness practice is indeed a medical practice, where its practicing physicians bridge the gap between conventional medicine and proactive well-being or preventive medicine. In addition: ▸▸ The practice of medicine no longer subscribes to the traditional philosophies of “diagnose-and-treat” or “fix-it-when-it’s broken.” ▸▸ The patient’s optimal well-being and health, not disease, becomes the primary focus. ▸▸ Physicians don’t treat “lab results,” but rather the patient’s symptoms. Dr. Castillo-Plaza is a long-time practicing physician with WellnessPlus offices in Pembroke Pines and Miami Beach. He is dedicated to wellness with a comprehensive approach to medicine. He looks where others usually don’t and transforms the patient’s experience into a journey of well-being. For information, visit www.wellnessplusmed.com or call 954 437-3756.

id you know that age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the foremost causes of vision loss in individuals over the age of 65? AMD is a condition that affects the macula of the retina which is responsible for clear central vision. Age Related Macular Degeneration Indications The first warning signs of AMD are often fuzzy vision and spots in the center of vision. Since the symptoms typically come on slowly without any pain, symptoms may not be detected until more severe vision loss is apparent. For this reason, it is very important to schedule a routine eye examination, particularly after the age of 65. What are the Risk Factors for Age Related Macular Degeneration? If you are of Caucasian decent, over 65 years of age, a smoker who consumes a diet low in nutrients or has family members that have had AMD, you are at higher risk of developing the disease. Any individual that is at increased risk should make certain to have a yearly eye exam. Discussing proper nutrition with your optometrist can also help lower your risk of developing AMD. Dry AMD and Wet AMD In general, AMD is typically diagnosed as either dry or wet. The dry form is found more frequently and may be a result of advanced age and macular tissue thinning or pigment build-up in the macula. The wet form is also known as neovascular age related macular degeneration. It results from the growth of new blood vessels beneath the retina, which leak blood that destroys the retinal cells and results in blind spots in the central vision. Often wet AMD is the more serious of the two. Macular Degeneration Treatment While there isn’t cure for AMD, certain treatments exist that can delay the progression. Depending on whether one has dry or wet macular degeneration, the course of treatment may involve laser surgery or medical injections or in some cases, dietary supplements. In either case, early detection and treatment is essential. Dr. Chesen will also be able to recommend devices to help you deal with any visual difficulty that you have already sustained. Vision loss that cannot be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgical procedures is called low vision. There are a growing number of low vision devices that can be used today that can make everyday activities easier. You can save your vision by being aware of the risk factors and signs of AMD. Visit Dr. Michael Chesen to learn more about AMD and low vision. To make an appointment with Dr. Chesen, call 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND CONSUMER ADVOCACY ATTORNEY
S
ince June 2013, when the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure cases are brought to trial. Previously, it would take anywhere between eighteen months to two years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog. Based on this goal, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, how can you combat against “light speed” foreclosures? The most important tool you can use to defend against our courts’ quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclosure defense attorney to guide you through the minefield of valid defenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t settle for anything less than an initial face-to-face meeting with the attorney. Let’s face it, if they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “too busy” to actually help you with your case.
Also, make sure that the attorney has plenty of litigation and trial experience (at least 15 years), and that the attorney regularly practices in the county where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the attorney has a proven track record of outstanding results and satisfied clients. Ask the attorney to refer you to at least three satisfied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the attorney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the office. Another critical tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law firm you hire to defend your case has an established loan modification department. This will give you the very best opportunity to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure case are not accepted by the court, you can process a loan modification, reinstatement, or short payoff of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place you can file a consumer bankruptcy and attempt to complete the modification within the bankruptcy proceeding. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense and loan modification departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients, so you can be confident in your decision to hire our firm. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

REAL ESTATE
1-Story Special
W
ith an abundance of online real estate sites offering recent sales, comparables, and trends, people often ask why potential home sellers need a Realtor when selling their homes. Selling one’s home is a highly emotional and a major financial responsibility that takes time, knowledge of the local real estate market, prolific marketing and great negotiating skills. While selling a home by yourself can save you a substantial amount of money, it could end up costing more than the Realtor’s commission by the time the transaction is complete. Selling a home by yourself involves continuously accommodating potential buyers, whether they are qualified or not, setting appointments, and negotiating the sale that can lead to uncomfortable situations and unnecessary stress to the potential home seller. An experienced Real Estate agent is educated in the sales process. He/she not only handles all of this for you, but also knows the contract, disclosures and, most importantly, the local real estate laws. What simply amazes me is the fact that sellers who take on the task of selling their home on “For Sale by Owner” focus on the commission savings as their number one priority. Seller liability is never a priority until it becomes an issue. Unbeknownst to them is that the buyers that gravitate towards “For Sale by Owners” also believe that they can save money on the home by not having an agent in the transaction. They normally make their offers accordingly, focused on simply negotiating the seller potential commission savings downwards in their favor. Per the most recent statistics from the National Association of Realtors, using a listing agent nets sellers a whopping 22% more on average than they get by selling by themselves. Added to this, more than 80% of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent. Not hiring an agent to do what they do best could cause you to lose 80% of your buyer pool. Eliminating most of your buyers will decrease your selling price and end up costing your money. The truth of the matter is that top listing agents sell homes day in and day out, while most homeowners sell their homes once every eight to ten years. While there are certain people that are qualified to sell their houses on their own, the majority are not. The home selling process is not as simple as many people make it out to be. In my opinion, entering my 17th year of real estate and engaging in thousands of real estate transactions, it’s safer to have a professional on your side. Before you try to sell a home by yourself, I challenge you to consider if it’s really worth the time it will take you to fully understand the sales process and how much money, if any, that you will actually save by doing it yourself. Patrick Simm, Managing Director of the Simmsational Group at Keller Williams Realty Partners SW, can be contacted at 954-709-8258 for all your Real Estate related questions and/ or inquiries. Are You Ready?
Your College Student and Access to Medical Info
I
t’s the time of year that brings high school seniors news of college acceptances. After 18 years of living under mom and dad’s roof, your “baby” is moving away. It’s an exciting time for kids, but an emotional time for parents. You know how much you will miss your child, and distance won’t keep you from worrying about their well-being. It’s no surprise that you wonder, “Have I done all that I can to keep them safe?” Many parents are stunned to discover that in medical emergencies they may not be entitled to information about their college-aged children. Why? Because in the eyes of the law, your 18-year old is an adult. Legally, parents have no standing to know or do anything. In an emergency, how will health care providers determine whom to call with urgent news? Will they know your child’s prior medical history? Often times, they simply won’t. What’s worse, even if a parent learns of a child’s illness or accident, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors and hospitals from providing information about an adult’s medical condition without his/her written consent. While some hospitals make reasonable judgments about giving information to parents, others have refused to reveal anything, least of all over the phone. Some may not even acknowledge to frantic parents whether their adult child has been admitted to a hospital. What can a parent do? It’s simple. Have your adult child execute advance directives, which include the following: ▸▸ HIPPA Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information - Grants health care providers permission to disclose medical information to designated individuals, which is essential to informed and timely decision-making. ▸▸ Health Care Power of Attorney - A document that authorizes another person to make medical decisions for your adult child, if they cannot. ▸▸ Living Will - A declaration stating whether or not life-sustaining procedures should be used to prolong life when a terminal condition is irreversible or death is imminent. ▸▸ Emergency Information and Contact List - An organized, updated and concise presentation of prior medical history, allergies, and emergency contact information. Advance directives and emergency contact information should be immediately available when urgently needed, or the information is useless. We strongly recommend that every adult carry in their wallet an emergency medical information card that makes health/contact information and advance directives instantly accessible to medical facilities anywhere in the world. An estate planning attorney can prepare these advance directives, and arrange for an emergency medical card. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. “Casey & Maggie ” Casey Earl (7) and Maggie (14) are adorable West Highland Terriers. Their favorite people are Mom Letita who gives them fantastic massages and Dad Johnnie Mack who takes them on fast rides in his classic ’79 Trans Am. Casey loves his large teddy bear while Maggie enjoys her ball with bell in it. They are both avid walkers but dislike the cats, possums, and lizards that they encounter along the way. Their favorite thing to do is to be with each other. They were last seen napping together.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IMPACT GLASS CAN BITE YOU IN THE END.
We’re family-owned, local and A+ rated by BBB. We’re proudly Angie’s Listed and Ygrene Certified. We’re licensed, insured and we call our mom every day. We don’t like companies that prey on the uninformed. We have this quirky habit of always telling the truth. It’s why our customers swear by us, not at us. We want you to know as much as we do about impact glass and shutters. Because if you don’t, you could make a terribly expensive mistake. Call us. We’re Dependable.
