Wishing You a Happy New Year!
A
s the holiday season comes to a close and
we return to our daily work routines, the Happy New Year toasts slowly fade away. We are trying to recover from all the festivities of the season, the get-togethers with friends and families, and the holiday feasts. Now we wonder what the year 2014 has in store for us. On behalf of my staff, I am happy to announce that we are once again growing our family of publications. Starting in March, we will be expanding our local community new magazines to reach an additional 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Sunrise. The new Sunrise Town Times will provide our readers with truly local school and community news while allowing local and regional businesses to reach the residents of that community. While we are making resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, and to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can achieve. Have a Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Weston and the Town Times magazines. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

“Iron Patriots” Help to Make a Difference in the Community By Julie Levin

S
ince being officially
welcomed in October, the newest members of the Miramar Fire Department found themselves particularly busy the week before Thanksgiving. In addition to their duties responding to calls, the new firefighters were also tending to the well-being of residents by giving back to the community they now serve. The firefighters, all members of the Miramar Fire Rescue Recruit class 2013, delivered turkeys, pumpkin pies and gift baskets to five local residents on November 25. To make it happen, the group had reached out to the community, as well as fellow firefighters, asking them to donate non-perishable food items for residents not able to be with their families for Thanksgiving. They collected enough donations to pack not only the holiday meal essentials into a gift basket, but a few extra groceries too. In addition, they all pitched in to purchase turkeys and pumpkin pies which they delivered right before Thanksgiving.
The new hires, known as the “Iron Patriots,” were welcomed at a traditional graduation ceremony held at Sunset Lakes Community Center in October. While many departments assign a number to new recruit classes, Miramar allows their new hires to self-name their class while going through a rigorous six-week training period with the department. During the ceremony, City and fire department officials, along with the recruits family and friends, came together to welcome them to the department. Fire Chief Fred Kunz said the addition of these firefighters enables gives the department the flexibility to open temporary Fire Station #107, which will improve services for midtown Miramar, as well as be a benefit to all areas of the city. Chief Kunz told the recruits they represent the future of the department. “One day, some of you may be our leaders as well. I implore all of you to never lose sense of your sense of value and call to duty, and the responsibility that you now carry. Never lose the excitement that you feel today,” the Chief said. The new hires join a department that services over 110,000 residents with a full time professional staff of over 150 dedicated personnel. They respond to approximately 12,000 requests for assistance each year.

A Healthy Move for Residents and City By Julie Levin
L
ike many people making resolutions this time of year ,
residents and City leaders in Miramar are vowing to get fit. That’s why hundreds of people turned out recently for a day devoted entirely to health, wellness and fitness. Their focus was on the City’s first Health Fair & Family Fun Day, sponsored by Commissioner Wayne M. Messam along with Memorial Hospital Miramar, SANOFI Pharmaceuticals and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We wanted to provide an event that would be not just informational, but be active and provide some great demonstrations too,” said Commissioner Messam. The five-hour free event was held November 23 at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center, located at 2400 Civic Center Place. Close to 300 people turned out to learn more about preventative health measures, physical fitness ideas and opportunities to get the whole family eating well, and getting active. Much of it was hands on, as guests had the chance to join in with live demonstrations of Jazzercise, yoga, karate and more. Kids also tried their skill at climbing on a rock wall, balloon art and face painting. Inside, guests had the chance to check on their health with screenings that were offered for bone density, blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and cardio health, along with information on women’s services and mammograms. A certified Diabetes educator held short workshops on Diabetes prevention and healthy living information was provided on topics like long term care, flu vaccine, educational apps, online resources, Miramar City Commissioner Wayne M. Messam encourages members of The Underground Spinning and vaccination. A mobile unit provided children medical services such Club during the Health Fair and Family Fun Day November 23 at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center as vision and hearing screenings and BMI checks. Messam said the response from guests and vendors alike was City is healthy, it means there are great parks, healthy food options available, and positive, and the inaugural Health Fair laid a great foundation to turn it into a facilities offering fun, active programming. The healthier our residents are, the yearly event. He said a focus on health and wellness is good for the City. “If the healthier our City will be,” he said.

New Manual Offer Tips on Growing Your Own Food By Julie Levin
M
ore and more , people are
making an effort to eat only fresh or locally grown produce, including items that they grow themselves. Now there’s a new guide out to help South Florida gardeners develop their green thumb. The Miramar Community Garden has announced the first edition of “Gardening 101 in South Florida,” a 100-page manual specially designed to teach everyone how to grow their own food in a challenging sub-tropical climate. The manual was written by Scott Lewis, who interviewed regional farmers and producers to learn some of the best practices for growing. The idea was to not only have a formal guide for all of the members of the Scott Lewis Community Garden, but also for anyone who wants to plant their own garden. “It is a great guide for gardeners in the area to think about what they could put in, why they should put it in, and how they should put it in,” said Lewis, a member of the Miramar Community Garden and an educator with the Urban Oasis Project. To give readers a “taste” of the manual, organizers have released an excerpt called “GROWING TOMATOES 101 in South Florida”. Available free of charge through download, the guide shows everyone how to grow their own tomatoes in South Florida’s sub-tropical climate, a real necessity when you consider there are more than 7500 tomato varieties grown for different purposes. Once for sale, the full manual will offer tips on everything from water, soil, composting and fertilizers, plant selection and planting plan, propagation, pest control, weed control, harvesting, seed saving, garden tools, as well as a monthly calendar section that provides gardeners with seasonal steps to improve success at the garden. To compile the manual, Lewis spoke with The “Growing Tomatoes 101 in expert growers such as Master Gardeners South Florida” manual is available Michael Madfis, Melissa Contreras, Muriel free of charge through the Miramar Community Garden Oliveras, Pat Simpson, Elaine Farquharson, Beverly Williams, Agustina Wright and Suzanne Smith. “We went to people who have grown in the area for a number of years and learned what they were successful with and what tips they used,” said Lewis. City leaders say the manual is a great idea to provide amateur and experienced gardeners the basics of growing their own food. “Whether you are a newbie or have a green thumb, Miramar’s goal is for everyone to have access to nutritious and tasty organic food while at the same time save you money and keep chemicals off our plates,” said Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley. The GROWING TOMATOES manual is available free of charge at www. ci.miramar.fl.us/green/garden. Sponsors are still needed for “Gardening 101 in South Florida”, which will be available soon for $5 per copy, with all proceeds benefiting the Miramar Community Garden.

Miramar’s Youth Advisory Council Travels to Seattle for National Conference By Julie Levin

recently traded a few days in the classroom, for some real-life experience in the world of civic and political involvement. The ten, members of Miramar’s Youth Advisory Council, traveled to Seattle in November to take part in the 2013 National League of Cities Conference of Cities. Along with Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley and Miramar Police Chief Ray Black, the students had the chance to rub shoulders with thousands of other local elected officials nationwide expanding their knowledge of how local governments work. “It is a great opportunity because they learn that government isn’t just in their own backyard. It functions on a much larger level,” said Mayor Moseley, who has run the Youth Advisory Council for eight years.
The Miramar Youth Advisory Council at the National Leagues of Cities Conference in Seattle: (l-r) Krystal Kennedy, Navya Baranwal, Deanna Henry, Ariadne Moreno, Ling Wang, Florida League of Cities President P.C. Wu, Kyle Chin, Florida League of Cities First Vice President & City of Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley, Chitra Gotluru , City of Miramar Police Chief Ray Black, Analis Ramos, Saif Nasir , Ariadna Natteri. In front Florida League of Cities Second Vice President Matthew Surrency.
The NLC, which the City is an active member of, represents municipal governments as an advocacy organization helping to shape federal policies. Students had the chance to interact with other youth delegates and also took part in round table discussions with elected officials that addressed topics such as green initiatives, civic engagement, school achievement and more. “It is important to see what others are doing around the county, what is happening in Miramar and how they relate,” said Mayor Moseley. Made up of five students from Everglades High School and five from Miramar High School, the Youth Advisory Council meets twice a month, once with Mayor Moseley and Police Chief Black, to learn the workings of government and law enforcement, as well as civics with a hands-on approach. The students, in grades 10-12, take part in a number of community service projects, including Relay for Life and are also preparing to start work on an anti-bullying project. The members of the Youth Advisory Council from Everglades High School are sophomore Ariadne Moreno, juniors Krystal Kennedy and Ariadna Natteri, and seniors Analis Ramos and Saif Nasir. From Miramar High, they are sophomores Navya Baranwal, Kyle Chin and Ling Wang, and seniors Deanna Henry and Chitra Gotluru. The Mayor says attending the national conference gives her council members a chance to establish relationships with other students, helps them to engage in community service, and shows them that they truly have a voice in how their communities are run. She says she is proud of their involvement and realizes working with them is a mutual learning experience. “One of the greatest pleasures of being the Mayor is empowering and mentoring our youth to be the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.

TAG USA Gymnastics Celebrates Another Successful Season
T
AG USA Gymnastics has earned a reputation as one of the top gymnastics centers in South Florida. This past year, the gym brought home its first National Championship in Double Mini Trampoline. In addition, its girls competitive team has won back-to-back State Championships, for Levels 2, 3 and 4. To celebrate its success, TAG USA welcomed Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman, who visited with young gymnasts and trained with some of the elite athletes. The Olympic spirit continued when the Olympic torch made a stop at TAG USA Gymnastics while on its way to Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Games which begin on February 7th. TAG USA Gymnastics’ owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan answered questions about the gym’s growing success, while reflecting on some of their greatest accomplishments.
How do you measure a gym’s success?
You started a new Xcel program this year. What is it? Marissa: We began a special preteam XCel program for young women who want to compete as part of the TAG USA team. Over 40 XCel athletes train with head coach Lauren Cruz and competed at our Invitational. Thirtyfour XCel athletes have already qualified for State Championships.
To what do you attribute your competition success? Michael: I believe that TAG USA has the absolute best team coaches in the state. In 2013, TAG USA won the Level 2 Girls State Championship. Both of our Level 3 and Level 4 Girls teams have won back-to-back State Championships in 2011 and 2012.
What’s your most popular program?
Michael: A good barometer of our growing success is when we compete against other local gyms. In 2013, TAG USA finished in first place against Park Avenue Gymnastics and West Broward Gymnastics Academy at the Celebrate America meet. We also finished in first place against Park Avenue and Coral Reef Gymnastics at the 2013 Gold Rush Invite.
Michael: Our fastest growing program is the TAG USA Trampoline & Tumbling team. Coach Laurie Faskowitz trains a team of 35 boys and girls to compete in trampoline and acrobatic events. Our team produced three top ten athletes at the National Championships. TAG USA boasts having the largest gym with the most Tramp &Tumbling equipment in South Florida.
Has having a National Champion attracted attention to the gym? Marissa: It is great to have a National Champion come out of our gym. Besides our National Champ, we had three athletes finish in the top ten at Nationals which shows the strength of our Trampoline & Tumbling program. TAG USA had local and national news coverage when Aly Raisman came to honor our National Champ.
What was it like having an Olympian in your gym? Marissa: Having Aly Raisman visit TAG USA was a remarkable experience for all of our teams and classes. Aly mingled with our girls like they were family. She was so positive in what she spoke about to all of our athletes.

Though the primary goal is to help the people of the Philippines, Khan-Ghany is also hoping the fundraisers instill a sense of compassion in her students, many of whom were unaware where the Philippines were before the fundraiser, or what had happened there. “I want to give kids our kids exposure to the real world out there. To see beyond Miramar, Florida and the United States and our borders,” she said. Khan-Ghany organized another fundraiser just before the Thanksgiving break, where students could pay $1 to get out of wearing their uniform and instead wear red and blue, the colors of the Filipino flag. The fundraiser brought in just over $100 and a bike raffle on December 12, donated by Friends of Humanity International, raised an additional $100. Khan-Ghany said she plans to have them follow-up on the developments in the Philippines throughout the year, as do other teachers at the school who are using the effort as a teaching tool. They say it is simply about being a good member of the community. “Although we don’t have students of Filipino descent in our student body this year, we do have them in our community and our kids know people in the community who are from the area,” she said. Miramar Patriots End Successful Season with Playoff Run By Julie Levin

championship this year, but Brian Faso, the Principal of Miramar High School, says he couldn’t be any prouder of his student-athletes, and the entire community that supported them during their recent playoff run.”I’m just extremely proud of them, of the program and the whole school,” said Faso. “I think our football team is a good representation of who we are as a school. “We have talented, very smart, classy people with a lot of school and community pride.” The Miramar High School Patriots (12-1)were eliminated from the playoffs after losing 12-10 to Palm Beach Gardens in the Class 8A regional final late last year, eliminating all hopes of a second state championship for the school. The team scored on its first possession, but was unable to score in the second half and were called for 14 penalties. The surprising loss for the nationally ranked Patriots came a week after they soundly beat Deerfield Beach High to move forward towards a possible championship. Even though they came up short against Palm Beach Gardens, Principal Faso said he is proud of the way they conducted themselves. “What I am most proud of is the kind of students and student-athletes that

we have, who have character and understand hard work and committement and pursue a specific level of excellence,” he said. As a perennial playoff power, Faso added that the team’s successful football program is a benefit for the entire school population. “It helps with the school pulse and school culture,” he said.”I am a believer that success breeds success and when you start off the year in such a positive fashion it spreads throughout the school. The students start taking being a Miramar Patriot a little more seriously and they understand that we are at a different level. The standard in all ways, including academically, is a little higher.” All eyes in the high school football world were also on Miramar last month for the 19th Annual Nike -All Star Football game, which was held December 28 at the Ansin Sports Complex Stadium. The game included some of South Florida’s most elite players in a Dade vs. Florida match, competing for bragging rights and scholarships. South Florida has more NFL players than any other region in the United States and Miami has more than any other city. Ninety-five percent of all NFL players born in South Florida have competed in TOC’s South Florida All-Star Football Game.

any patients in our community come to our
office to be evaluated because they have shoulder pain after playing sports. The pain is reported to be located on the top, front, back or side of the shoulder. It usually involves the dominant extremity. There is usually a traumatic episode that triggered the shoulder pain to start, such as throwing a football, a collision, serving or hitting a tennis ball, or an over use overhead problem. This type of shoulder pain usually gets worse with time and it also gets worse in intensity. The patient has usually iced the shoulder and has taken anti-inflammatory medication. The pain is progressively getting worse to the point that in some patients, it does not let them sleep the entire night. In others, the pain is specific to sports-like activity such as playing tennis, softball, football or basketball. Most of the time, the normal overhead mechanics of practicing the sport are impaired and the athlete can not compete or play without pain.

Arthroscopic surgery is indicated when the patient is unresponsive to conservative management protocol and has an MRI scan with findings consistent with a rotator cuff tear. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. The rehabilitation of this type of surgery is divided into a healing phase followed by a regain motion phase and strengthening phase under the supervision of a trained, licensed physical therapist. Most patients can return to unrestricted sports activities in about three to six months. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and Eye Strain By Michael Chesen, OD
T
he American O ptometric A ssociation (AOA)
reports that over 7 out of 10 of the Americans that work each day from a computer monitor (about 143 million people) suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye strain. Prolonged computer use can result in eye stress and effect typical vision processes in kids and adults. If you are working at a computer longer than 2 hours each day, it is likely that you will suffer symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Signs of CVS
Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome include vision difficulties such as dry eyes, blurred vision, inability to focus or double vision and pain such as headaches, back aches and heavy eyes. If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms, you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome.
What Are The Causes of Computer Induced Eye Fatigue?

Eye fatigue from prolonged computer use is caused by the necessity for our visual processing pathways to adapt to processing text on a computer screen in a different way than they do for letters in print. While our eyes are used to focusing on printed material that contains solid black characters with sharp edges, they are less familiar with characters on a digital screen that lack the same degree of contrast and sharpness. Words on a screen are created by combinations of tiny dots of light (pixels), which are most luminous at the center and diminish in intensity toward the edges. Therefore it is harder for our eyes to focus on these images. Instead, our eyes reduce focus to the ‘’resting point of accommodation’’ or RPA. Our eyes involuntarily adjust to the RPA and then have to make a great effort to regain focus on the text. The continuous strain on the muscles of the eyes to focus results in the fatigue and eye strain that is sometimes present during and after use of a computer or digital device. CVS isn’t a matter of concern just for those who spend a lot of time on computers. Other electronic gadgets such as smart phones or tablets can cause similar conditions and in some cases even worse. Since mobile screens are often small, in addition to pixilated, the user often strains even more to focus on images.
Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Strain
If you think that you might be at risk for CVS, you should make an appointment with an eye care professional sooner than later. At a computer vision exam, your eye care professional will perform tests to detect any particular vision problems that might worsen symptoms of computer eye strain. Depending on the results of these tests, your optometrist may prescribe prescription computer eyeglasses to reduce discomfort at your screen. An anti-reflective coating is highly recommended for computer glasses. An antireflective coating lessens glare that may interfere with your ability to focus on images on your screen.
Ergonomics for Computer Vision Syndrome
Ergonomics, or changing your work environment to reduce strains in vision or posture, can help relieve some of the discomfort of computer vision syndrome. Proper lighting and frequent breaks will cause some relief. However, since ergonomics alone cannot resolve a visual problem, using ophthalmic computer eyeglasses is also necessary. If you think you are suffering from CVS or at risk of getting it, contact Dr. Chesen at his Miramar optometric office by calling 954-437-9733.

Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less Than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bank-
ruptcy in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt (credit cards, medical debt, etc.) is wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. In fact, your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home during a Chapter 7 bankruptcy with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the market value of the home. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. Over a period of 3-5 years, a Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, credit card and other unsecured debt negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, reduced student loan payments, IRS liens, reduced car payments. Even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed for the first mortgage on your principal residence must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis, instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation. T
hank you for allowing me to serve as your County Commissioner for District 8. We have accomplished so much. Our district has received millions of dollars for parks and infrastructure improvements. West Park is receiving Community redevelopment dollars to help spur business and job creation in their city. Pembroke Pines received monies for serving as a regional provider for our E911 dispatch services to help create a regional dispatch service for Broward County and save lives by decreasing response times. Hallandale received funds to build the new Foster Park Community Center and youth library. Pembroke Park received bus shelter improvement dollars as well as transit corridor improvement funds. Miramar received $3 million in Community Redevelopment funds for infrastructure improvements and the Miramar Pineland Park which Broward County built for an additional $3 million will improve the quality of life on the East side of our District. Children will have a place to learn about nature and appreciate the beautiful landscape we have in sunny south Florida! I helped to initiate the Autism in Flight program to assist Autistic children in gaining experience with navigating through the airport. This program was co-sponsored by Jet Blue and the Broward County Aviation Department and the Broward School Board partnered with me to enroll students. These were just a few of the great things that happened to say the least. Recently I was nominated unanimously by my colleagues to serve as Mayor of Broward County. While being nominated to serve as the first African-American female Mayor of Broward County is historic, the title comes with great responsibility. Being the Mayor of the 17th largest county in the nation is humbling to say the least. As the County Commissioner for District 8 which includes (Miramar, Pembroke Park, West Park and parts of Hallandale Beach and Pembroke Pines), I have seen firsthand the challenges we face such as unemployment, slow economic development
and competition in attracting tourism, to create jobs and decrease unemployment. I started my company from scratch and now provide jobs to over 600 professionals in Broward and Miami Dade counties. Being an owner of a small business and seeing it grow to what it has become has motivated me to pursue this goal. Small businesses, which are typically categorized as those having 50 employees or less, have always been economic drivers during and after recessions. One of the areas I wish to focus on is small business support on a comprehensive level. This means support from the start up, to mentoring and through the first 5 years. As you know, starting a small business can be a struggle because it is difficult to obtain capital and financing when you are a new business. Many existing small businesses are struggling right now due to the same issues. I am supportive of programs that can help with idea development, incorporation, business plan writing, credit clean up, budgeting, marketing, obtaining loans and incubation of the business if necessary. I also don’t want to limit our support to just for-profit companies. We have very few programs in Broward County to support start-up businesses and nonprofits. “Broward County Means Business!” It’s more than a theme for a year. It’s a way of defining who we are as a County and what we are about, which is outcomes and results. As a defining principle, it showcases the best of our rich, diverse community – a community with considerable talent, expertise and vast innovative potential. We have grown into a major player in international trade and entrepreneurship. The development and resilience of our small business community makes us unique not just in Florida, but nationally and internationally, and is proof positive that Broward County is an excellent place to open and grow a business, set roots, and raise a family. I wish you all happiness, success and prosperity for the New Year. Your Commissioner on a Mission! Barbara Sharief M.S.N., A.R.N.P. Mayor of Broward County
