t’s hard to believe that it’s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were decorating the house for the holidays. Now it’s time to focus on another holiday – Valentine’s Day. This is the day we celebrate the special person, or people, in our lives – be that your spouse, partner or children. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. What’s most important is that the gift comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love. This Valentine’s Day, be sure to give from your heart and enjoy each others company.

The Invicta Watch Group Tour de Broward, presented by z-Motion, is returning to the Miramar Regional Park February 24 with its signature five fitness and recreational event. An estimated 2,000 people are expected to turn out for the day, which will support the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Cardiac Center. “This is our fourth year, and the community has helped us raise $300,000 or above each of the first three years,” said Craig Cohen, Director of Sponsorship Development with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Invicta Tour De Broward will offer something for everyone in the family. Events will include a 3K Family Walk and 5K Run Timed Run, as well as 50K and 100k Cycling Challenges. Participants for the Tour can register as either part of a team, or as an individual. Even younger kids will have a way to get active. diagnosis to repair or management of congenital defects or cardiac dysfunctions. It is home to the pediatric heart transplant program, one of only two in South Florida. According to information provided by the hospital, national statistics show that congenital heart defects are the most common types of birth defects in the United States. They affect nearly 40,000 infants born in the United States each year. Fundraising proceeds and donations to Cardiac No Clowning Around: Even popular children’s clown Center are used to purchase high-tech equipment “Lotsy Dotsy” led a team for the Tour De Broward and provide emergency assistance to families. Cohen said events like the Invicta Tour De Broward help support not only the Cardiac Center, but the community’s health needs as a whole. “Our CEO, Frank Sacco, has a vision for the community and he wants to make sure that ten years down the line, when Broward County goes through another growth spurt, we are there and prepared and have everything in place to handle the health care as our community grows. That’s a major issue of how we do and what we do,” Cohen said. The Invicta Tour de Broward, presented by Z-Motion, will be held February 24 at Miramar Regional Park, located at 16801 Miramar Parkway in Miramar. The community is welcome. Participants for the Tour can register as an individual or as a team. People can also donate online and fundraise as a team. All participants will receive an event t-shirt and goodie bag. New Walk of Remembrance to Mark Black History Month By Julie Levin

I

n honor of Black History Month, the City of Miramar is launching

a new celebration designed to honor prominent African-American athletes and civil rights pioneers. The City’s Ansin Sports Complex will host its first Athletic Walk of Remembrance February 23, and they are inviting the entire community to join them. “Since February is Black History Month and we are a sports complex, we are trying to put an athletic spin on our event in hopes that we will inspire and educate,” said Drolin Celestin, a Recreation Leader with the City of Miramar. The event, which will run from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. will be spread out across the entire complex located at 10801 Miramar Blvd. Once inside, guests will enjoy bounce houses, music and other fun while also having the chance to see photos of prominent African-American athletes. Each photo will include a short biography, as well as athletic stations and a cheerleading station where children can learn some of the same techniques that made their heroes stand out amongst their competitors. “We want our kids to understand that athletes are more than just people on the field. They do things in the community and help where they can. They are leaders that set an example and make a statement. Yes, it is fun to watch them, but look what else they do,” said Celestin Local schoolchildren will also play a big role in the celebration. Some have been invited to take to the stage and showcase their talents through music, African dance,

10 MTT ALL 0213.indd 10

spoken word and more. Students from Sea Castle Elementary School, carrying signs and posters of Black Civil Rights leaders and athletes, will walk around the center’s Olympic-sized track led by Dr. King’s “I have a Dream Speech”. “It will be a time to see just how far we have come,” said Celestin. Following the event at the Ansin Sports Complex, there will be a Black History Celebration and Arts & Crafts Festival February 23 at the Miramar Town Center, 2300 Civic Center Place, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The event will include live entertainment showcasing local South Florida talent, spoken word, African drummers/dancers, arts & crafts and food vendors. Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month, though its origins date back to 1926 when noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans founded Negro History Week. Both Miramar events are free, open to the public and will have food and beverages available for purchase. For more information on the Athletic Walk of Remembrance, please call Ansin Sports Complex at 954-602-4990 and/or for more information for the Town Center event, please call 954-602-3319.

ove could be in the air for Miramar’s senior citizens. On Feb.

14, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., they will have an opportunity to spend an afternoon with family and friends at one of the City’s longest running annual Valentine’st Day events. The Senior Valentine’s Day Dance will be held at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex Ballroom, located at 6700 Miramar Pkwy and everyone is invited to enjoy, even if Cupid’s arrow misses its mark. “You don’t have to be looking for love to enjoy our Annual Senior Valentine Dance. Bring your friends and family members and expect to have fun,” said Khaye Curry, Senior Services Superintendent. The City of Miramar has sponsored the Senior Valentine’s Day Dance for more than 20 years. Guests get dressed in their finest attire as they prepare to spend an afternoon in a room filled with red hearts and other holiday decorations. Light refreshments will be served and entertainment will be provided by DJ Action Jackson. “This annual event is a favorite at the Senior Center,” said Curry. “They may be older, but they are still very active and love to have a great time. They look forward to getting dressed up; getting their hair done for a special occasion and looking beautiful. It is important for them to have planned events on their calendars.”

The City of Miramar operates two senior centers designed for residents who are at least 65 years old. The Sunset Lakes Senior Center is in West Miramar, at 2801 SW 186 Ave., while the senior center in the Multi-Service Complex is in East Miramar, at 6700 Miramar Pkwy. Both centers offer a wide array of services such as counseling and support groups, information and referral, health and wellness, recreational activities and even a hot lunch provided by Broward Meals on Wheels. The Senior Valentine’s Day Dance held at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex Ballroom, located at 6700 Miramar Pkwy on Thursday, February 14 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Tickets for the dance are $5 for members. ven though summer seems a long way off and the school year

still has four months to go, it is never too early to start thinking about summer plans for your children. That’s why this month the City of Miramar is giving residents a chance to explore their summer camp options. They are hosting their 2nd Annual Summer Camp 2013 Open House February 16 at the Miramar Town Center, located at 2300 Civic Center Place. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be a great way for parents and kids to get a sneak peek at the four different summer camp options Miramar has planned for 2013. Displays will be setup so that families can walk around and browse all of the different offerings. Staff members will be on hand to answer any questions and provide information on all of the camps being offered.

For 2013, the City of Miramar will again offer their summer camp for campers in grades k-5. It’s a traditional day camp with themed activities, field trips, crafts and games, treasure hunts, special guests, dress up days and much more. Older campers, ages 13-16, can check out their Teen Camp. For youngsters interested in sports, the city also offers a Sports Camp for campers 6-12 years old. It’s designed to introduce campers to a variety of sports to help develop new skills and techniques. A different sport will be featured each week where campers will learn the history and basic fundamentals of the sport through drills, games, and tournament play. For those with a flair for the spotlight, the City also offers its Little Broadway Summer Camp. Campers 7-14 years old will enjoy a visual and performing arts summer program that all culminates in a theater performance. Campers will delve into the world of musical theater; musical instruments such as guitar, piano and recorder; dancing; singing/spoken word; acting; visual arts; costume making; and technical aspects such as stage management and set construction. The Summer Camp 2013 Open House will also provide information on some of the private camps that will utilize City of Miramar facilities. In addition to food and other fun available for the kids, there will also be important health, education and safety information available. Registration for camp for Miramar residents will begin in April for camps, so it is not too early to start making those summer camp plans. The 2nd Annual Summer Camp 2013 Open House will be held February 16 at the Miramar Town Center, located at 2300 Civic Center Place. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information about this event, call 954-602-3343 or visit them online at www.ci.miramar.fl.us/communityservices/events

FSU Honors Commissioner for a Second Time

M

MARDI GRAS

By Julie Levin

iramar Commissioner Wayne Messam was recently honored

by his college alma mater with a distinction that marks a small bit of history. The commissioner was honored by Florida State University with a National Distinguished Alumni Award by the FSU Black Alumni Association. Just 16 years ago, while studying at FSU, Messam also received the award as a student. The new honor makes him the first person to receive the recognition as both an alumni and a student. “It was initially a surprise,” he said. “But I was very humbled and honored to be recognized by the Alumni Association.” Messam, who was elected to the Commission in 2011, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from FSU in Management Information Systems in 1997. He made his mark at the school after receiving full academic and athletic scholarships to attend FSU. On the field, he was a starting wide receiver for the Seminoles and member of the 1993 National Championship Football Team. Off the field, he was active with the Black Student Union and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In 1996, he was elected as the FSU Student Body Vice President. That same year, he received the FSU Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Student Award for leadership, advancement of student causes and service. After playing football at FSU, Messam was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie Miramar Commissioner Wayne Messam free agent. After his football career ended, he moved into the business world by working for Fortune 500 firms and then in 2003 co-founded Asset Builders d/b/a Messam Construction with his wife, Angela Sands-Messam, 1996 FSU graduate. He is one of a few African-Americans in the nation who holds a General Contractor license and LEED Accredited Professional credential. He remains heavily involved with civic causes as well. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Broward County League of Cities, the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, the Florida League of Cities’ Finance and Tax Committee and the National League of Cities’ Energy Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee. He also serves on the National Board of Directors of the FSU Black Alumni Association and is a Life Member of the FSU Alumni Association. Messam said being selected by FSU as a Distinguished Alumni this time around, is an honor unto itself. “As an alumni, it is just as rewarding because now your credentials are being compared to other alumni across the country,” he said. Messam’s honor comes as FSU celebrates 50 years of integration. Florida State University enrolled its first three full-time African-American students in 1962. The FSU Black Alumni Association is an officially chartered affiliate of the FSU Alumni Association and is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in the State of Florida. They are dedicated to the personal and professional development of FSU’s black alumni, students, faculty and staff and to ensuring that FSU remains one of the premier institutions for the retention and graduation of minority students.

Female Cadet Commander Earns Her Wings By Julie Levin

A

driana Bendeck says she knew she had a passion for flying

the very first time she sat at the controls of a small Cessna. The flight lasted no more than an hour, but it was long enough to prompt Bendeck into planning a future in aviation. “I just fell in love with it. I knew it was what I wanted to do,” said the Miramar High School senior. This year, Bendeck is forging ahead with her love of flying by earning her private pilot’s license at just 17-years of age. She completed her first solo flight in November. She is also making a bit of history by becoming the first female cadet commander of the Miramar High School Civil Air Patrol Squadron SER-FL-803. Bendeck, who holds the title of cadet senior master sergeant, is the first female to lead cadets at the school since the program was chartered more than ten years ago.”It’s a good experience to know that you can achieve something that no one else has before, and it also shows other people they can do it too,” she said. Among the projects she has taken on as commander this year, urging the 20 cadets in her squadron to take full advantage of all Civil Air Patrol has to offer, particularly in the face of a busy high school schedule. “It is challenging to maintain club activities in a high school where Bendeck volunteering with the Civil Air Patrol at the Homestead Air Show 2012, standing in front of a B-52 Stratofortress.

there are many other popular activities to pull students away from CAP,” Bendeck says. “We have a great deal of support though, at the Group and Wing levels, that attracts cadets to incredible chances to fly and train.” CAP, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with more than 56,000 members nationwide. Members serve as mentors to the nearly 22,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. Bendeck has made it a priority to network with other squadrons in the area to both promote leadership and organize activities that encourBendeck after age cadet promotions and careers in the aviation field. Adriana completing her first solo Some of the opportunities she has gotten the squadron flight in November at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. involved in are the Vietnam Memorial Wall Walk, air shows, encampments, observational flights, and search and rescue mission training. “Adriana has exceptional leadership skills and charisma,” says Maj. J. Edward Martin, commander of the school squadron. “She is well-respected by the cadets.” Bendeck is currently pursuing her instrument rating as a pilot and completing the International Baccalaureate Program at Miramar, where she also studies French and Chinese and is an active member of the Club of the Arts, Indian Student Association, National Honor Society, and Miramar Theatre Camp. She will be off to college next year where she hopes to work towards a career in aviation. She says serving as the first female commander of her squadron has given her an invaluable amount of experience in leadership and service. “It is really about understanding kids and showing them what they can achieve by themselves independently,” she said.

City Offering Classes for Small Food Production Businesses By Julie Levin

S

purred on in part by the success of its new weekly Farmers

Market and its growing initiative to celebrate local foods and healthy eating, the City of Miramar is taking a step forward in helping residents create a specific type of home-based food business. They recently announced a new permitted home business type called “Cottage Food Operations” and they are rolling out a series of educational cooking classes to help better educate residents.

Classes are being offered for residents interested in running a “cottage food” operation in their home. Breads are among the items that can be produced and sold.

The classes, which will be held once a month at the Miramar Cultural Center, will cover topics such as methods of food preservation, canning, freezing and drying foods, and fermenting and pickling. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, cottage food operations in the home became a viable alternative in 2011, after the Florida Legislature enacted a bill allowing individuals to manufacture, sell and store certain types of “cottage food” products in an unlicensed home kitchen. The law recognized the fact that many residents interested in starting a small food production business, do not have affordable access to commercial kitchens that are licensed for food processing. Goods that can be produced include breads, rolls, biscuits, cakes, cookies, candy, pies, jelly, jam, dried fruits, cereals, trail mix, pasta, dried fruits, herbs and seasonings, vinegar and popcorn. Potential Cottage Food producers do have to meet a number of state and local requirements, before beginning operation. City leaders says allowing homeowners to produce cottage food products at their homes and sell them at a farmer’s market provides many residents with a viable means of earning additional income for their families.

Schedule of Upcoming Classes:

▸▸ February 19 -Methods of Food Preservation: Includes canning basics, food safety and samplings on how to master freezer jams. ▸▸ March 19-Canning 101: Includes high acid foods using a water-bath canner. ▸▸ April 16-The Magic of Freezing and Drying Foods. ▸▸ May 14- Fermenting and Pickling Products.

The classes will be held at the Miramar Cultural Center, located at 2400 Civic Center Place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a nominal fee. To register, call 954-602-3270. For questions about the City of Miramar’s Cottage Food Operations requirements, please contact the Business Tax Office Tel at 954-602-3040 or 954-602-3061 or email businesstax@ci.miramar.fl.us. School Garden Teaches Students About Healthy Food

S

ome beautiful new plants are taking root at Miramar Elementary

School, and teachers are hoping new ideas about healthy eating grow right alongside them. The school is growing an array of vegetables, strawberries and herbs as part of a brand new program launched by the Broward Education Foundation called “Garden Delights-Team Up for Healthy Choices.” The program is designed to curb the epidemic of obesity and encourage kids to eat more fresh vegetables. “Our goal is to promote nutrition and healthy eating, science and math through a handson garden project,” said Jorene Jameson, Broward Education Foundation President and CEO. It is the first year for the “Garden Delight” program which was launched late last year with more than $50,000 in donations from the Health Foundation of South Florida, Wells Fargo and Flamingo Road Gardens Nursery. Five low income Broward schools are taking part in the program by designing, installing, maintaining and harvesting vegetable gardens at their schools. In addition to Miramar Miramar Elementary School has created four types of garden environments, including Elementary, the other schools taking a vertical and raised bed garden part are Endeavour Primary Learning Center in Lauderhill, Maplewood Elementary in Coral Springs, Dillard Elementary in Fort Lauderdale and Discovery Elementary in Sunrise. Kindergarten Teacher Devon Berry is leading the garden effort at Miramar Elementary. She and three other educators at the school first attended training sessions to learn how to properly plant and maintain a garden, and then work into it the school curriculum in science, math and reading lessons. They decided to create four separate garden styles so that students could see different ways of growing fresh goodies no matter where they live. “Some kids have backyards, and some kids live in apartments, so we wanted to show them how they can make-do in their space,” she said. Berry and her team created a vertical garden, in which plants are stacked in pots one on top of another and do not take up much space. They also made raised bed gardens, a garden in cinder blocks and a hydroponic garden. Students have been watching seeds tucked into paper towel and plastic gloves sprout, and then transferring them to the soil. “The kids can see the whole process,” Berry said. The schools also held a cooking demonstration last month to show parents how they can cook with the healthy items coming out of the garden. “The goal of the program is to improve students’ attitudes about nutrition, encourage them to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit and engage parents as well in the switch to healthier food choices at home,” 1 2 said Jameson. The Gatorade Junior Training Camp is a free grassroots program that teaches NFL skills to the South Florida youngsters, as a way of highlighting the importance of education, physical fitness, and making positive choices. School Silver Lakes Elementary student Esteban Minaya makes administrators say the mission all the right moves during a Junior Training Camp drill. was a success. “I feel the message really got to the kids,” said Stephanie Standley, Reading Coach for Silver Lakes Elementary. “They were really excited about it and had a wonderful time. I hope the kids get out of this experience is that they get outside and exercise rather than stay inside.” The students had the chance to run through many of the same drills as the Miami Dolphin players they look up to as role models. They participated in both offensive and defensive drills featuring hurdles, knock-away dummies, ladders and halfback pads. They also learned cheerleading routines. The Gatorade Junior Training Camp is designed Silver Lakes Elementary student Brianie Derissaint for first through fifth graders, jumps over the hurdles during an interactive drill and is held on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year at elementary schools. Mayor’s Message

Faith in Miramar’s Future

D

ear Miramar Residents:

The year 2012 was very busy politically for everyone, not only for the candidates, but for the electronic and print media, the political parties, the bloggers, as well as for advertising. I am sure that many of us had engaged in political discussions with our friends, families, neighbors, and even with people standing next to us in line to cast their vote. Regardless of the rhetoric, our country cast its vote and made its decision on who will lead our great country for the next four years. The result was that on January 21, 2013, our nation swore in our next President of the United States whose inaugural theme was “Faith in America’s Future”. The theme made me think of how appropriate it is for our nation, and for our City as well. In fact, I have borrowed this theme and redubbed it, “Faith in Miramar’s Future.” On March 12, 2013, you as residents get to once again decide our City’s future by casting your vote for two city commission seats. Unlike other cities that are divided into districts and are only allowed to vote for the one commission seat in their respective district, you all get to vote for two of Miramar’s commission seats. It is my hope that you will take the time to get to know the candidates and see if what they want for Miramar’s future agrees with what you want as well. You can get to know the candidates by visiting their websites, hearing them speak at events, or even just coming up to them and speaking with them about your concerns. As many of you experienced the long lines and the required voting procedures during the national election, I encourage you to make sure that you check the Supervisor of Elections website (www.browardsoe.org) to ensure that you have all you need to vote as well as where your precinct is located. I believe that the men and women who seek to be our leaders feel a civic pride and duty to help make our lives a little better. In order to do this, many of those in office, especially local officials, attend public meetings that go late into the night and special events that take time away from their families even during the holidays. Many of them also have full-time jobs. Much of the time that they take to address public issues could be used instead to increase their families’ livelihood by working longer at the office or by undergoing training to be more marketable and valuable to their company. Instead they selflessly forgo it, in pursuit of a better quality of life for the entire Miramar community. Let’s show our “Faith in Miramar’s Future” and vote for the leaders who will help us get there. Warmest regards, Lori C. Moseley Mayor

Real estate

Ask the Expert

South Florida Housing Market Prevention of Skiing Injuries Keeps Getting Better for Sellers By Al DeSimone, M.D.

By Patrick Simm

T

he consensus is now unanimous! ….Finally, dis-

believers in the South Florida real estate market are in agreement that the housing market has made the turn around, in spite of the state being tormented by one of the highest foreclosure rates in the United States. Home and condo sales are reaching record numbers monthly, as foreigners purchase real estate at what may be an unprecedented level. South Florida holds a rare distinction in terms of international attraction for foreign buyers, with its rich mixture of cultures from around the world. This influx of buyers has produced the largest increase in property sales for any U.S. urban area and is producing a recovery for the region from the toughest housing crash since the 1920’s, even prior to the Great Depression. South Florida was forecasted to complete 2012 with average housing inflation, including condos, of 8.4%. The number is not official, but I dare to say that the average housing inflation exceeded that number and was much closer to 10%. It has been seven years since the housing market last experienced the gains that we saw in 2012, with leading indicators showing no signs of the recovery easing up within the next few years to come. With the overwhelming positive indicators occurring in the Real Estate market at the present time, the question of whether we are headed towards another Real Estate Bust often arises. Take a moment to consider the following……prices fell approximately fifty percent across the board subsequent to the last downturn that originated back in late 2005. Roughly seven years later, we have acquired approximately ten percent of the values back. We have to appreciate another forty percent to reach the values that we were at in 2005. The majority of buyers, including investors, sense that prices are now at affordable levels and it’s just a great time to buy! This current real estate dilemma of low housing inventory levels caused by demand exceeding supply that is driving appreciation is predicted to continue for the next five years or so. I believe that as long as the economies of other foreign countries continue to endure challenges, South Florida real estate in particular will continue to thrive until buyers feel it’s unaffordable again. South Florida is an international destination for vacationers, attracting home and condo purchasers from all over the world. If there’s ever been a time to buyer housing in South Florida in this decade, chances are this is it! There is a steady increase in prices, and buyers are starting to realize that if they don’t get in to this market sooner than later, the window of opportunity continually diminishes. espite the lower incidence of skiing injuries

over the last several years, there are still more than 500,000 skiing injuries in the United States every year. Though foot and ankle injuries are becoming less common, knee ligament sprains and upper extremity injuries are extremely prevalent. We have also seen an elevated number of injuries involving the head and neck region, as well as the lower spine. After performing extensive research and giving multiple lectures on this topic, I think there are a number of pearls of wisdom to remember during skiing. Pre-season conditioning programs that include strength training focusing on flexibility and agility are recommended to all skiers to help reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. Though skiing instruction at the time of travel may lower the incidence of injuries, more specific injury prevention courses prior to going on a ski trip have been proven to lower the incidence of injuries.

Remember to acclimate yourself with rest, proper hydration and a high carbohydrate diet, as these elements will protect against fatigue. Most injuries occur within the first few days of skiing because most individuals progress very quickly to a high demand level of activity. To prevent injury progress slowly, avoid prolonged periods of rest and stop skiing prior to fatigue. Also keep in mind that late afternoon skiing has the highest incidence of injury mostly due to changes in skiing conditions. When looking for the appropriate equipment, consider age, height, weight and level of expertise, as beginner skiers should even consider a helmet. Assure proper binding adjustments, as failure to do so has been associated with a higher occurrence of skiing related injuries. Falling backwards (sitting on your skies) may often result in significant injury. Always try to keep your knees flexed and remain balanced on your skies. These are a few tips for all skiing enthusiasts of this season. Remember that safe skiing is always fun. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon.

How to Tame Your Brows: An In-Depth Look at the Secret to Beautiful Brows By Alisa Hoosein and Rosimer Privett, co-founders and resident experts at Brow Boutique

B

eauty trends come and go but perfectly

shaped brows will always be in style and perfect brows always start with professional shaping. Eyebrows are just too much of a focal point on your face to start messing with them yourself! They can make or break the rest of your look, and nobody should have to live with uneven brows, hair breakage, ingrown hairs, or a whole lot of unnecessary pain! Now, how to go about getting the perfect shape? There’s waxing, sugaring, plucking, shaving, tweezing, threading… with so many options, finding the right one can be tricky. The team at Brow Boutique focuses on threading and waxing, and makes the choice based on each individual customer needs and comfort zone.

Wondering which method is right for you? Both waxing and threading pull the hair out from the root, have similar pain levels, and have equally long lasting results. Here’s a quick synopsis of each treatment to help you decide which option will work the best for you:

Why Waxing?

Waxing removes hair quickly and effectively from the root. Warm wax is applied underneath and over the eyebrow following the desired shape. A slight pressure is applied to allow the wax to stick to all the hair. Then with a quick movement against the direction of hair growth the hair is removed. If you’re looking for the quickest route to perfect brows, waxing is likely the best option for you.

Why Threading?

Threading has been around for ages, an all-natural chemical free form of removing the hair from the root. It involves using a single piece of 100% cotton thread and removing multiple hairs at once. The specialist twists the thread around the hairs and pulls them out at one time. When it comes to less skin sensitivity, threading is the way to go. Threading is the best method for extra sensitive skin, including Retin-A or Accutane users. Ultimately, the end result is beautifully shaped brows. Whatever method you choose, an experienced professional will give you and your brows the best results. Though full and natural brows can look healthy and youthful, a clean symmetrical shape is what will boost your confidence and get you noticed! Legally speaking

The Key to a Successful Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications

in which their resulting payment is the same, and in some cases, actually higher than their original mortgage payment. Also, the resulting principal balance owed by these homeowners is far more than the home is worth, and even more than when they started the modification process. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes, because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public foreclosure auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware that the key to a successful loan modification is hiring an established law firm with an experienced loss mitigation department. First and foremost, every homeowner should know by now that just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. If you do not have proper representation in the foreclosure action, you risk losing your home before you can complete your loan modification. Despite what the bank representatives may tell you, the law firm representing the bank may have a different protocol to pursue the foreclosure of your home. We witness individuals in court lose their homes daily due to their refusal or inability to hire a qualified attorney to represent them. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have been representing consumers in foreclosure defense cases for over 17 years, are familiar with all the available legal defenses in a foreclosure case, and have established credibility through years of successful practice throughout the State of Florida. In addition, the Arcia Law Firm is one of only very few law firms with a local in house loss mitigation (“loss mit”) department that works hand in hand with our clients and our litigation department to ensure that the loan modification is completed before the foreclosure. When preparing a loan modification application, it is important that it contain everything the bank’s loan negotiators are looking for, and that it be organized in a certain specific order. If items are missing, your application is passed and sent to the back of the queue to start from the beginning. This process can continue for months, and then you must convince a loan negotiator that you qualify under the various government and/or the bank’s own in-house loan modification programs. This complex cycle is where most homeowners get stuck for months without success, or where they become so frustrated they accept the first modification offered despite the terms being worse than the original loan (higher principal, higher payments, etc.). The key to breaking the vicious cycle, and obtaining a viable loan modification is to be properly represented by a law firm that has both an established foreclosure defense as well as a knowledgeable and experienced loss mitigation department. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

KAPOW in Miramar Schools

Sophia Bryan, Mori DelSol, Alicia Aguilar, Carolyn Cervanti, John Casbarro, Julie Osheroff and Traci Hobbs pose for a photo at Silver Lakes Elementary School recently. The educators and City employees have been combining efforts to bring KAPOW, or the Kids and the Power to Work, to the Miramar school. KAPOW links students and teachers with volunteers and their organizations to help connect learning and teaching in school with its application in the workplace.

The Miramar Ansin Sports Complex was recently the scene of the 2nd Annual Miami Dolphins Championship Series Presented by Generation Nexxt and Under Armour. The championships crowned eight youth football teams from the American Youth Football League (AYFL), Florida Youth Football League (FYFL), Greater Miami Pop Warner (Pop Warner), and South Florida Youth Football League (SFYFL) after a two weekend competition in December. Here, the Pembroke Pines Bengals celebrate their championship trophy.

Celebrating A Cultural Trust

Broward County Vice-Mayor and former City of Miramar Commissioner Barbara Sharief presents a $5,000 donation to the Miramar Trust for support of local art and cultural initiatives. The donation was made to City of Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley and Norm Taylor, board member of the Miramar Cultural Trust during the opening of the “All that Jazz: Photographs of Jazz Legends exhibit at the Miramar Cultural Center. Long time art gallery owner Barbara Gillman, seen here with Rachel Ivers and Roberta Kjelgaard of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale-Nova Southeastern University, provided many of the photos. Also on hand for the event, Scott Hodges of Sunbeam Properties, developer of the Miramar Park of Commerce, with Mayor Moseley. The exhibit will run through May.
