While this winter season did not bring any significant cold weather periods to South Florida, we were able to watch the news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the northern states. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Northeast is bracing for yet another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. While we hardly consider the winter season as beach weather, snowbirds from up north and visitors from around the world flock to Florida to enjoy our mild weather, our sea breezes, our white sandy beaches and everything else the Sunshine State has to offer. With spring break approaching why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our state with a stay-cation. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? 9th Conservation Day – The City of Miramar and Florida, Power & Light will host “Conservation Day” to highlight the importance of conserving energy, water and recycling household goods. The day will include an award ceremony for the youth poster contest held among all the Miramar elementary schools. Teams Needed for Kiwanis Scavenger Hunt By Julie Levin

Kiwanis is a dedicated group of volunteers who strive to serve their neighbors and children and create a positive impact one child at a time. The Miramar/Pembroke Pines chapter plans many service projects throughout the year and raises funds to provide college scholarships for local high school students. Recently, they hosted their annual Adopt-a-Turkey project over Thanksgiving, and also helped to pack care packages for sailors aboard the USS Leyte Gulf and the USS Bataan, the “adopted” ships of the Broward County Naval League. They are also dedicated to the next generation of leaders by sponsoring several service leadership programs in local schools, including Key Clubs at Flanagan, Everglades, and Miramar High Schools and a K-Kids Service Club at Pines Charter West Elementary.

The Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines will be hosting its first annual Scavenger Hunt in April and they are looking for teams and businesses ready to help with a great cause. The Kiwanis Scavenger Hunt will be held April 13 and will take place at locations and businesses around Miramar and Pembroke Pines. All of the proceeds will go towards the club’s participation in “Christmas in July” day, an annual Kiwanis event that benefits the homeless children of Broward County with a day of fun, entertainment, and a distribution of clothes, shoes and school supplies. The Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines is looking for businesses interested in boosting foot traffic, as well as social media coverage from the event. During the Scavenger Hunt, businesses will serve as clue answers and teams would have to go to the location and tweet a photo of their visit with the #kiwanishunt tag to qualify for scavenger points. Teams of anywhere from 2-4 people will get a rule book and a list of clues at the start of the event. The idea will be to solve as many clues as possible before the finish time. “This is our first attempt at a

Literacy with PC’s will give them the ability that will help them improve the quality of their health,” said Dr. Mary Howrey, the DeVry University Library Director who ran the workshop. Guests were invited to bring their mobile devices to access the online resources with help from volunteers from DeVry University South Florida and Chamberlain College of Nursing. There were also panel discussions on Healthy Aging and Caregiving, as well as an Expo with representatives from local social service organizations and companies serving seniors. n a room inside Miramar’s newest park, a small group of competi-
tors sat quietly, patiently studying the chess boards in front of them. While trying to win their rounds, the players, six in all, were also the first to take part in a brand new event in South Broward. The City of Miramar, in conjunction with the Alphachess Academy Youth Chess Club, held its First Annual Chess Tournament at Vizcaya Park.”The park managers wanted to see what kind of interest there is in the community for chess,” said Gildardo Garcia, an International Chess Grand Master who is also a Tournament Director for U.S. Chess Federation. “So I was happy to come help organize this.” The free, recreational tournament was held February 2 at the park, which is located at 14200 SW 55 Street. Open to the public, competitors were asked to bring their own chess boards. The players participated in a round-robin tournament, where everyone took part in five games which were not timed. Rather than all-out competition, the main focus of the tournament was to let the players test their skills against other chess enthusiasts. Each competitor left with a certificate of participation and good sportsmanship. Garcia says the event provided a badly-needed venue in Southwest Broward for chess lovers. “I know when people learn about the idea, more will want to join us,” said Garcia, who added that more tournaments may be added if there is enough demand. One of the world’s most popular games, Garcia is also trying to introduce chess to younger generations. He runs a chess club every Sunday at Vizcaya Park for youngsters of all skill levels. up to age18. The food and wine tasting began nine years ago as a fundraiser and networking event for the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce and has grown every year. “We do because it is good for our members and we get to showcase a lot of great restaurants,” said Goltz. New this year, the Chamber will also be offering a coupon book including offers from 30 restaurants from Miramar, Pembroke Pines and surrounding areas. The proceeds will be used to raise money for their scholarship fund. Created in 1969, the Chamber is committed to providing a variety of venues to assist the business owners of our region to become better businesses by becoming better business leaders. Young Rockers Show Their Metal

ust like a lot of concerts, there was a stage, bright lights and
an anxious audience crowding the stage ready for the music to start. The fact that the band performing was made up of elementary school students didn’t take away from any of it. “I’ll play with them anywhere. They are that good. It’s a real rock band,” said Matthew Goldberg, the Music Teacher at Silver Shores Elementary School in Miramar. Goldberg, a Cooper City native, plays in his own band known as “Stirling Road.” When the staff and students at Silver Shores Elementary found out about his music four years ago, a push began to bring the same to the school. “When they found out I had a rock band, a lot of the kids wanted to their own band instead of doing regular chorus. I thought it would be cool to start their own band, and sure enough we did,” said Goldberg. The band made its first public appearance this year, with a performance January 26 at the Pembroke Gardens Fountain Plaza. Calling themselves “The Silver Eagles”, the more than 50 students in the band sing, play drums, keyboards, Singers Miranda Urbina, 9, and Olivia Ruiz, 10, before the show percussion and guitar. For close to an hour, they rocked hits by Katy Perry, Bon Jovi, Taio Cruz, Drake Bell, KISS, Miley Cyrus and Journey to an appreciative crowd of parents, friends and on-lookers. “I love it because I can just express how I feel through music,” said Elliana Bolanos, a 10-year old fifth grader who is one of the lead singers. To be a part of Mr. Goldberg’s Rock School, the students rehearse MondayThursday for 45 minutes before school starts. The students come to the band with some previous music experience and have to audition for roles. “It shows a lot of dedication on their end,” said Goldberg, who adds his skill with the guitar to the band. They have done benefits throughout The Silver Eagles Rock Pembroke Gardens the years, and are hoping with “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi to help raise money for the victims of Superstorm Sandy this year as well. “I like to show them we can do good through music and raise money for things that are important,” Goldberg said. While the students appreciate they are helping out, they also love the idea of being in a real rock band. “I love to sing, and I want to try out for the X-Factor one day, so this is good experience,” said fourth grader Olivia Ruiz. “It’s actually really cool and I love to learn about music,” added fourth grader Miranda Urbina. Chef Demonstrates New Ideas For Garden-Fresh Treats By Julie Levin

aking sure you eat enough veggies doesn’t have to mean
crunching on a celery stick. A local chef recently visited the Farmers’ Market at Memorial Hospital Miramar to prove that eating healthy can also mean eating well. “I want people to see that they can grow their own beautiful produce and create some amazingly healthy dishes,” said Chef Trina Spillman with The Need to Feed, Inc.

Spillman came to the Farmers’ Market, along with master gardener husband Keith Spillman, on February 3 for an event sponsored by the Miramar Community Garden. Her mission was to show residents how to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into great meals. On her demonstration menu; preserving and creating jellies, jams and butters. More than three dozen people turned out to watch Spillman create strawberry jam, an apple butter and a hot pepper relish. “It’s basically red and green bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, sugar and apple cider vinegar,” said Spillman, who also offered tastes of the relish to hungry guests. The visit, and a demonstration at the Miramar Community Garden later in the month, was part of the City of Miramar’s initiative to celebrate local foods and healthy eating. It’s an effort Spillman has been a part of for many years. The Need to Feed, Inc. was originally created to grow fresh produce for the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry in Evansville, Indiana. When the founders relocated to Florida, spurred on by statistics that Spillman says showed 35% of families with children do not have enough food, they restarted the Need to Feed. They planted their first community garden in Pompano Beach in 2011, and now maintain a second one in Deerfield Beach. The initiative harvests fresh fruit and vegetables to supplement food pantries in Broward County with fresh produce. Through their Wok-n-Roll Cafe, the duo brings the produce to cooking demonstrations at the local food pantries to help promote healthy, budget-friendly meals. The City recently announced that all five of its childcare centers have been recognized nationally as “Eco Healthy Child Care Centers” by the Eco-Healthy Child Care (EHCC) Program. “There are only 27 childcare centers in the State of Florida with this endorsement and the City of Miramar Early Childhood Program represents five out of those 27. In fact, nationwide there are only 683 childcare providers who have earned this endorsement,” said Karen Lewis, the City’s Early Childhood Superintendent. Eco-Healthy Child Care is a national program that ensures child care settings are as healthy, safe and green as possible by reducing children’s exposure to toxics. Their eco-healthy certification requires that schools or organizations meet 24 out of the 30 items on their “go green” list. Among the items; non- toxic techniques for dealing with pest control, superior air quality, use of biodegradable / non-toxic products, using bleach as a cleaning agent, using low VOC paints, as well as chemical free furniture and carpets. Though not immediately visible to parents and visitors, Lewis says the result is making sure that the products they use are chemical and toxic free, which leads to better air quality, and ultimately better health for both the children and staff. Among the steps they take, choosing their plastics carefully, watching what and how they microwave, and using art supplies that are toxin and fragrance free. They also recycle what they do not reuse. It is the second year the City has applied for and received the recognition. Lewis says it is an effort provided not just by the childcare staff, but also by the many City departments they work with to keep the programs environmentally healthy. She credits the change with starting with the City’s administration, Mayor and Commissioners and said the Social Services and Public Works Departments also play key roles. “The continuing dedication shown by the Early Childhood staff for the well-being of the children in our care continues to impress me, as it takes the effort and support of everyone working together to establish, meet and maintain the standards set for an Eco Healthy Child Care Center,” she said. The City’s Early Childhood Programs are located at the Vicki Coceano Youth, Center, Miramar Civic Center, Sunset Lakes and Silver Shores. uyers and Sellers beware. Trying to buy or
sell a home in today’s rapidly evolving real estate market is, in theory, pretty simple. In actuality, it is not so easy. For at least the last 18 months, and more importantly within the past year, the inventory of homes for sale has been in short supply, leading to multiple offers from an abundance of buyers on homes priced even somewhat realistically in today’s market. Yes, even homes that are overpriced are attracting offers from eager buyers. How times have changed! A few years back, sellers were at the mercy of buyers, having to offer concessions in different forms in order to lure buyers. With the present state of the market, buyers are realizing that they have to forego asking for sellers to pay for all or part of their closing cost in order to get an offer accepted. This places severe pressure on the cross-section of the buyers that are qualified for FHA financing (requiring a minimal down payment of 3 ½ percent). They can only afford the minimal down payment required and are in need of closing cost assistance in order to accomplish the “American Dream”. These buyers are left with no other option but to take time to save more money in order to eliminate these challenges. They often end up getting “priced out” of the market when you take into the consideration the time it takes to save the additional funds versus the current rate of real estate property appreciation. Heartbreaking, although in reality it’s the simple truth.

evelopmental flatfoot is one of the most com-
mon conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern.
CAUSES
▸▸ Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. ▸▸ Congenital bone abnormalities. ▸▸ Trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch. ▸▸ Tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the foot deformity.
SYMPTOMS
▸▸ Young children may constantly prefer to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. ▸▸ Leg pain, especially at night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. ▸▸ Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity. ▸▸ Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.
SIGNS
▸▸ Lowering or complete collapse of the arch. ▸▸ Front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. ▸▸ Knock-Knees. ▸▸ The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. ▸▸ A child that is overweight and lacks athletic ability. ▸▸ General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ The child or teenager does not run correctly.
TREATMENT At present, we are experiencing double digit appreciation in most areas of Southwest Broward County. How long can this appreciation continue? Realizing that historically the average annual home appreciation is somewhere between 3% and 4%, are we headed for another bubble? Only time will tell. For now, buyers targeting South Florida still find the home prices attractive enough. Property appraisals returning below the agreed upon selling price is another challenge that buyers and sellers are currently experiencing. Banks base their loan on appraisal values. The most recent trend is that Sellers are requesting buyers to pay the difference of the shortage of the amount whenever this occurs. Why would someone pay more for a property than it is actually worth? In most cases, if the difference in appraisal and the actual sales price is a small percentage, it’s worth paying the spread now instead of waiting to find another property. In today’s market, with a shortage of inventory, by the time a buyer finds another comparable property, I dare to say that property will be more than the difference the buyer is faced with paying now. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. ▸▸ In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. Most often very simple procedures can be performed to give the child or teenager an arch, allowing them to walk, stand and run correctly and efficiently.

If you took advantage as I did to watch the Universoul Circus performing at Miramar Regional Park this past February, you were witness to one of the newest art forms in America. Unlike circuses of the past, the Universoul Circus is clearly a unique and wildly entertaining event that has turned the traditional circus world upside down. It has become a new type of family entertainment where the variety of acts from around the world creates performances that amaze everyone. Due to its enormous popularity, a scholarship opportunity has been created to allow one of our own Miramar students to experience the Universoul Circus directly through The Mayor’s Ringleader Scholarship. In conjunction with the relocation of UniverSoul Circus to the City of Miramar’s Regional Park effective February 2013, one recipient will receive a two-week summer camp residency at FSU Flying High Circus in Tallahassee. The scholarship is open to any grade 10 and 11 students who reside in Miramar and have an interest in experiencing summer camp at a circus. The Florida State University’s “Flying High” Circus is primarily an aerial and stage presentation and campers will learn a variety of acts that will include flying and static trapeze, trampoline, juggling, and more. Applicants should have a high energy level and an interest in physical activity. This has the potential to be an annual activity timed in accordance with the circus’ scheduling for Miramar. The scholarship is partly based on the Essay Theme/Topic: I am a Ringleader: Becoming the Person Others Want To Follow. Using Chapter 13 to Keep Your Home and Other Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in
which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and credit cards and all other unsecured debt are wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. Your lender even has the right to continue a foreclosure on your home during a Chapter 7 with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the home is worth. Many consumers, however, are unaware or unwilling to consider the immediate benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.
Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures his/her debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees and escrow shortages. All credit card and other unsecured debt can usually be negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, and you may even be eligible to reduce student loan payments, wipe out IRS debt, and even reduce your car payments. However, the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence. You may also be able to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties, and pay off those properties in as little as just three years. In order to wipe out a second mortgage from your home, the amount owed for the first mortgage must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to a debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and even reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property down to the property’s market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, and under one affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and stays current on plan payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure of any properties listed in the plan. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the home is worth and have a second mortgage, line of credit or other liens on that property, then you are a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have any investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. Summer Fun Starts With Camp Sagemont By Stacey Bomser

amp Sagemont has been delivering
spectacular summer experiences for longer than its campers have been alive. Now celebrating its 17th season, Camp Sagemont continues to evolve to provide new and exciting experiences for its campers. From tiny tots to teens, there is truly something for everyone this summer.
JoAnn Laskin, Executive Director for Camp Sagemont, has been actively involved with the camp since it first opened in 1997. She has seen and helped it grow from a traditional day camp to offering a selection of specialty camp programs from sports to science to the stage. How and why do you always incorporate field trips into your camp programs? Camp Sagemont campers are on the go! Some of the programs are based specifically around field trips and exploration and other camps have field trips
Some students need academic support over the summer.What is offered in the Summer School program? We are very proud of our academic Summer School program because these are hard to find in Broward County. We cater to students who want to get enrichment or remediation to help bridge the learning gap that can occur for students over the summer. Some students attend just summer school and others choose to participate in a summer school and day c a m p com biCamp Sagemont’s youngest campers always enjoy nation. In addition, showing their team spirit during Color Wars. we offer an English Learning camp for students who are just being introduced to the English language.
Why did Camp Sagemont expand from a traditional day camp program to providing so many specialty camps? We found that our campers have so many diverse interests that we wanted to create a variety of options for them to grow and expand into. There is something offered for everyone from preschool through 8th grade. In addition, our camp programs are geared towards active involvement while having fun! What’s new and exciting this summer? This summer, in addition to our traditional day camp and popular adventure camp, art camp, science camp, sports camp and travel camp, we will be offering zoo camp, voice/performance camp, marine camp and cheer camp. The campers in each camp will benefit from a hands-on approach through the exposure of field trips, presenters and performances. How does Camp Sagemont come up with these original programs? We have many brainstorming sessions, we listen to family survey comments and we look at popular trends. What are some of the things children can look forward to this summer at Camp Sagemont? Each week has a specific theme which we don’t announce until camp begins. We always introduce new special events to go along with our themes. The campers love our on campus pool

Do you offer a bus service? Due to expressed interest from parents, we are offering a limited bus service this summer for the first time serving the areas of Miramar to Plantation. The service will be based on demand and parents can call the camp for details. Anything else you would like readers to know about Camp Sagemont? Our campers have come to know and love their summers with us. We are always changing things up and adding new experiences. We are very excited about introducing more new programs geared to appeal to middle schoolers. We want the campers and their parents to know that our daily activities, adventures and travels provide a great opportunity for building friendships plus exploring South Florida’s attractions in an easy, safe and affordable environment.
