ith the start of spring this month , we wel-
come the new growth that comes with this season. The flowers are blooming, trees are budding, and we are introducing a new magazine. I’m thrilled to announce that with this issue we are expanding our local community news coverage to the City of Sunrise. Sunrise Town Times is the newest addition to our family of publications which have been serving readers in West Broward for over ten years. Each month Our City Weston and our Town Times magazines deliver award-winning, family-related, local news editorials to keep you informed on everything that is going on in your hometown. The pages are packed with interesting and informative articles about community events, school programs, new businesses and much more. Sunrise Town Times reaches 20,000 homes and businesses located between the Sawgrass Expressway and University Drive. This expands our overall coverage area from the Broward/Dade County line in the south all the way to Commercial Boulevard in the north. Combined with our other five monthly community news magazines serving the cities of Weston, Davie/Cooper City/ Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Plantation, we now provide locally focused news to 120,000 households throughout West Broward, reaching an estimated 400,000-plus readers each and every month. New 3D I-Cat SCaN teChNology at NaIDu orthoDoNtICS Naidu orthodontics’ investment in 3D It shows the correct root angulations and finds supernumerary teeth dental imaging technology provides best and their exact locations to communicate clinically correct information to oral surgeons to facilitate precise extractions and avoid possible results for their patients. The initial task, of any orthodontic treatment, is to establish and understand the exact tooth position and relationship of the patient’s anatomy. This is traditionally done using tooth impressions and molds as well as regular X-ray technology. These methods are often extensive and perceived by many patients as less than pleasant. However, capturing this information is critical to developing treatment options through a clinically responsible approach, while at the same time it controls radiation exposure to the patient.
Dr. Kistama Naidu, DMD, MS. Board Certified Orthodontist
The office of Naidu Orthodontics recently introduced low dose I-Cat Scan technology – a first in Broward. This allows the precise capturing of 3D initial orthodontic workups and progress scans. At the same time this advanced technology reduces the applied X-ray dosage significant with a shortened scan time of just 4.8 seconds. why is accurate initial exploration important? Capturing precise accurate 3D views to analyze teeth, roots, TMJ, airway, and sinuses without magnification or distortion enhance the dental practice’s efficiency by capturing a complete workup in less than 10 seconds.
exploratory surgeries. It allows our office to replicate dental implant placements virtually using the convenient anchor pin library.
Quickly and easily all the available images are compiled into a virtual study model service complete with crowns, roots, developing teeth, impactions and alveolar bone. With just one click, 3D cephalometric analysis are created, which also yields full traditional 2D analysis. why is low dose I-Cat Scan technology important? Traditional dental scanning technology utilizes the unique properties of X-rays to create a 2D image of the patient’s facial bones and teeth. The advanced I-CAT scan technology allows us to not only create a 3D image, but it also reduces the amount or dosage of X-ray exposure. In short, I-Cat Scan technology allows Naidu Orthodontics to gather more information in order to map the most effective, and least invasive, treatment plan for the best possible tooth realignment while minimizing the patient’s exposure.

New Interactive Arts Program To Make Debut By Julie Levin

n the not too distant future when
patrons visit the Miramar Cultural Center, they’ll have the opportunity to not only enjoy a performance, but also have a chance to get to know the artist a bit better as well. Thanks to a $12,000 grant, the center will soon house an innovative program known as Art Speaks…Join the Conversation that is designed to bring a new understanding to cultural offerings. “My hope is it will provide a new perspective, and a new appreciation,” said Maureen Kohler, Executive Director of Miramar Cultural Trust. “I’m hoping to bring people together so people will have a shared experience, some networking and maybe some partnerships formed. I’m hoping to create a dynamic around not just coming to see a performance, but what’s that next level and step and having the artist be able to share that with the community.” Art Speaks, presented in partnership with the Miramar Cultural Center / Arts Park, will debut during the 2014-15 cultural season and consist of four culturally diverse programs that are still in the planning stages. Kohler says organizers are working towards developing interactive programs that provide new insight into the world of art in all venues There will be networking, photo opportunities, and a chance to learn more about the art process. “Instead of coming to the show and just appreciating the performance, there would now be an opportunity to speak
with the choreographer, speak with the dancers, ask what inspired them, what was their journey like, how did they get here?” Kohler said. “We just want to have a little more insight into the production and into the background instead of just the final performance.” The program comes thanks to $12,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The prestigious Knight Arts Challenge funds ideas that help bring South Florida together through the arts. Kohler said that was exactly what she intended for patrons of the Miramar Cultural Center when she and her team decided to pursue the grant. “It’s great that there are performances and an opportunity for them to see cultural events, but I thought it needed a little bit more,” she said. Over the next several months, Kohler said attention will turn to securing matching funds required for the Knight Foundation Challenge grant. Art Speaks will be hosted by Miramar Cultural Center Ambassador Jo Marie Payton, best known for her role as Harriette Winslow on the long running comedy Family Matters. All programs in the Art Speaks series will be free and open to the public. For more information, call 954-602-4536 or visit http://www.miramarculturalcenter.org.

ong before coming into public office, I experienced the benefits that social service organizations and churches provide to our community. Broward County has over 300 social service organizations that assist the County with providing care to infants, children, the elderly, medically needy and homeless residents. Non-profit organizations have traditionally been looked upon as optional organizations. Unfortunately, when times are tough these agencies are hurt the most by budget cuts. However, we are in a time where the economy and social issues dictate a severe need for these organizations. In addition, we have churches that cannot obtain lending from traditional sources due to their non-profit status even though they are some of the most profitable non-profit organizations that we have. You may be familiar with some of the larger organizations such as the United Way, Boys and Girls Club, Meals on Wheels, and 211-Broward. There are many others that are unable to fully service their clients because funding is limited. To show my support for non-profits, I will be partnering with FPL this month for their Power to Care project day at Children’s Harbor, a residential foster care center in West Pembroke Pines for sibling groups & pregnant or parenting foster teens and their babies. I toured this facility recently and I and other volunteers will help with painting the entire inside of one of the sibling homes and performing minor repairs that are needed.
port is the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center (SBARC). At the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center we allow the mother and her children to reside in our residences providing them a safe place to start again. We are the only center in Broward County that has this unique housing situation. This prevents the children from entering or returning to the foster care system. Families at our center benefit from comprehensive services that address complex issues affecting them. Our goals are to assist women in recovery to live an independent life, bond with their children and lead a healthy family lifestyle. Next month I will be honored at the JM Family Enterprises African American Achievers Award. As part of that honor, JM Family Enterprises will donate $10,000 to a local charity of my choice and I have chosen SBARC to receive these funds. This organization keeps the family together and strengthens it even further with their programs. Still, there are many organizations that need our help. Many families need access to affordable childcare and assistance for providing three healthy meals a day. Children cannot learn if they are hungry.

My role in public service has given me the opportunity to tour the many non-profit social services organizations that provide necessary services to those in need. We need to do a better job of showcasing the benefits of our non-profit organizations in Broward County. As Mayor, I want to advocate for dollars to fund services such as: housing assistance, education on preventative healthcare, substance abuse and recovery programs, as well as adult education to retrain those who need to re-enter the workforce. Broward County’s Office of Economic and Small Business Development Division has committed to help register, certify, and appropriately classify these businesses. I have also been fortunate enough to talk with the Governor’s office to work on programs to provide lending support for small non-profits. These initiatives will complete the holistic approach we have been looking for in Broward County and hopefully gets us even closer to ending homelessness and put the focus on non-profits that have helped the community through tough times and to give them the ability to continue to do so for years to come. Hundreds Race to Rotary Finish Line By Julie Levin
Left: More than 250 runners took part in the 15th Annual 5K/10K Run/Walk sponsored by the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club and the City of Miramar Right: A runner crosses the finish line of the race, which was held January 19 at the Sunset Lakes Community Center
H
undreds of runners and walkers recently turned out to
take part in one of our area’s best known family-friendly fundraising events. The Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines, along with the City of Miramar, held its annual 5K/10K Run/Walk January 19, and organizer Robert Bell said there was a strong turn-out. “We had a total number of runners approaching 300,” said Bell, the Chairman of the Run Committee. The 15th annual event was held in the early morning hours at the Sunset Lakes Community Center, located at 2801 SW 186 Ave in Miramar. Runners and walkers of all ages took part. It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club, and Bell said they raised between $8,000-$8,500. The proceeds will be used to help three organizations: the Miramar Police Athletic League, a charitable organization providing educational and athletic
programs to the youth in the City of Miramar and surrounding areas; the MiramarPines Rotary Club Foundation Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to college-bound students in Miramar high schools in need of financial assistance; and the Exceptional Theatre Company (ETC), a charitable organization that provides opportunities for individuals in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties with special needs, many of whom are excluded from participating in activities of normal life. 24 overall awards were presented to the participants by Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley, Commissioner Yvette Colbourne and Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief. The City of Miramar created the event in the late 90’s and the Rotary Club of Miramar came on board a few years later. Since merging with the Pembroke Pines Rotary Club in 2007, the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club has co-hosted the event each year. Locally, the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines club organizes and directs efforts that significantly focus on young people. These include scholarships and international student exchanges. Garden Could Flourish Thanks to Major Grant By Julie Levin

“This grant will have a major impact on the future growth and success of our Community Garden.” Along with the honor comes a $40,000 grant, which was awarded during the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 82nd Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. late January. The judges recognized Miramar for its “Intergenerational Fruit & Vegetable Garden” that includes a fruit grove, raised beds, a culinary herb garden, a seedling nursery and an outdoor classroom. Other cities recognized included Mesa, AZ, Tallahassee, FL, Minneapolis, MN, and Houston, TX. Created in 2010, Miramar’s Community Garden is centered in Fairway Park, located at 3700 Largo Drive. The garden is the first demonstration of “micro farming system” in Broward County. It is an environmentally and economically sustainable system that creates a network of healthy food sources of naturally grown vegetables and fruits, as well as a social network for garden volunteers to learn about the urban agricultural industry. Currently, there is a team of 15-20 volunteers that help keep the garden green and growing. They work under the guidance of certified Master Gardeners, all of whom were granted the title by the University of Florida-Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences (IFAS) after completing a Miramar Project Lead Elsi Rose and Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley course hosted by Broward County’s Extension (4th and 5th from left) accept the grant on behalf of the City. Office. Throughout the year, the garden hosts
are taking root in the national spotlight. The City’s thriving Community Garden was one of just five cities recently recognized for their efforts to develop and maintain green spaces and community gardens in their cities. Miramar was awarded a 2014 GRO1000 Gardens and Green Spaces Grant Award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, and the city leaders who helped make the garden happen couldn›t be happier. “What a great honor for us to receive this award, particularly for the many garden volunteers who donate their time, sweat and expertise to allow our garden to be successful,” said Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley.

The winning cities were chosen by a panel of former mayors and national garden experts. This year, the GRO1000 grants have been expanded to award a total of $40,000 in money and products, payable over three years. The first year, the winning cities will receive a grant in the amount of $25,000, comprised of $15,000 cash and $10,000 in-kind product from ScottsMiracle-Gro. The grant award will be $7,500, made up of $5,000 cash and $2,500 in-kind productsthe remaining two years.

Tomey replaces outgoing Chief Fred Kunz, who officially retired at the end of January. Kunz leaves after a 29-year career with the City of Miramar that began in 1984. “Miramar has been blessed to have talented staff with vested interest in the Miramar community,” said City Manager Kathleen WoodsRichardson, who presided over the ceremony. “Chief Kunz leaves the Fire Department with a solid foundation affording Interim Fire Chief Tomey an excelMiramar City Manager Kathleen Woods-Richardson passes a ceremonial ax between outgoing Chief Fred Kunz (right) and interim Chief Keith Tomey (left)

Brazilian Basketball Clubs Train in Miramar By Julie Levin
T
hey didn ’ t speak much E nglish , but some young basketball
players from Brazil recently used the shared language of athletics to help improve their hoop skills. The youngsters, members of two Brazilian basketball clubs, traveled to Miramar for the first time to hone their game on the City’s basketball courts. The effort is tied into the City’s goal to become an international sports training destination for athletes from other countries. “We have state of the art training facilities and we want to showcase that,” said John Kee, the City’s Sports Development Superintendent. The clubs -Basquete Positivo Brasil & Curitiba Basquete- are made up of 16 & under, 14 & under and 13 & under players who arrived at Miramar’s Youth Enrichment Center Gymnasium January 16. Organizers from Mentoring Valuable Protégés and the South Florida Youth Basketball Association provided coaches from local schools who put the young hoop players through two training and shooting drills.
Young Brazilian athletes from Basquete Positivo Brasil & Curitiba Basquete train on the courts at the Youth Enrichment Center Gymnasium in Miramar
Though the Brazilian squads had traveled to the United States for training in previous years, it was the first time they used the facilities in Miramar. Brazilian Head coach Lorenzo Vercesi said the facilities and coaching were a major upgrade from what they had back home. “It’s a pleasure to be here,” he said.”It’s the top of the top for basketball here, like soccer for us. We can to learn new things and improve our basketball.” The Brazilian teams had a chance to do that the following day when they played an exhibition against another local youth team. Because their skill level wasn’t on par with American teams their own age, organizers paired them against slightly younger teams to ensure a positive learning experience for all. They also watched some local high school games to learn style and technique. “It’s a way to let them experience the American style of basketball. It is very different from their style and it is what they want to learn,” said Adrian Sosa with the South Florida Youth Basketball Association who helped arranged the visit. Miramar’s sports facilities are gaining international attention in other sports. Currently the Canadian National team comes to Miramar for track and field training at the Ansin Sports Complex, which has a state-of-the-art track. Athletes from New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom come for Netball training and the City has hosted the Pan-American Juniors in track and field which drew 32 countries. The long-term goal is to host a future Pan-American Youth Basketball event.

hough most people associate the Harvest D rive with a Thanksgiving-timed food drive, lead organizer Renee Herman says she is well aware the financial need among many families in our community doesn’t go away after a one-time food donation. That’s why Herman’s Harvest Drive organization continues to help families throughout the year. Recently, they came to Sea Castle Elementary School in Miramar to help struggling families there. “We’re going to let them shop, there will be groceries for them and dinner. So it is like a mini-Harvest Drive,” said Herman. Harvest Drive is the annual food drive that takes place at many Broward schools each Thanksgiving, where families are provided with a complete

beginning of the year. Sea Castle Student Trinity Lamons was among the volunteers helping to pack the grocery bags. “We are packing food for other people to eat. That makes me happy because we are feeding other people,” she said. “It makes me feel happy to know they won’t be hungry,” added student Hannah Barnes. Parents who stopped by the school to volunteer with the effort were also pleased that their children could help others in the community. “This is something I want to instill in my daughter as she grows older that it is good to give back and help the less fortunate,” said Andrea Campbell-Barnes.

Orthotics: Are They All the Same? By Neal M. Bullock, DPM, PA
O
rthotics: are they all the same ? Are they
all created equal? No, they are not. Orthotics, sometimes referred to as “orthoses” or even “arch supports,” is a device inserted into a shoe. It can range from a felt pad to a custom-made shoe insert. It can correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern. Orthotics allow people to stand, walk, and run better and with more comfort. While over the counter orthotics, typically seen in drug stores, are available and may help ease mild symptoms, they typically do not correct the wide range of symptoms that prescription foot orthoses can. Prescription orthoses are custom made to fit a person’s unique foot structure. Orthotics come in many shapes, sizes, and materials and fall into three general categories: those that change foot function, those that are mainly protective in design, and those that combine functional control and protection.

954.499.5840 Rigid orthotics fall into the first category. They are designed to control function and are used normally for walking and dress shoes. They are often made of firm material like plastic or carbon fiber. They are made from a mold after a podiatric physician takes a plaster cast (or other image) of the foot. Rigid orthotics control motion in two major foot joints that lie below the ankle joint. They can improve or eliminate strains, aches, and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back. Soft orthotics are mostly used to absorb shock, increase balance, and take pressure off sore spots of the foot. They are effective for diabetic, arthritic, and deformed feet. Soft orthotics are usually made of cushioned materials, so they can be worn against the sole of the foot. They extend from the heel past the ball of the foot, and include the toes. Soft orthotics, like rigid ones, are made from a mold after the podiatric physician takes a plaster cast. Lastly, there are the semi-rigid orthotics. They provide foot balance for walking or engaging in sports. They are typically made from soft material and reinforced with more rigid material. Sometimes they are prescribed for children with flat feet and in toeing or out toeing disorders. They are additionally used to help athletes mitigate pain while they compete. If you are thinking about orthotics, visit your podiatric physician and get a pair uniquely suited to your individual foot and needs.

Contact Lenses for Teenagers By Michael Chesen, OD
N
o adolescent likes to be caught wearing
something that makes them different. For some teenagers, eyeglasses can often feel that way. Just the thought of wearing glasses can send a teenager running in the other direction. In comparison, a newly published report says that kids and teenagers who wear contact lenses feel a significant enhancement in their appearance. The research results show that starting at the age of eight, children may prefer being offered the choice of contact lenses. The research was recorded in Eye & Contact Lens, which is published by the Contact Lens Association. Just how do contacts enhance an adolescent’s self-esteem? Young adults are self-conscious and they often feel better about themselves when glasses are not the center of their appearance. Contact lenses may help teens feel greater selfesteem and more comfortable around others by providing them with a less visible option for vision correction.

Although teens are frequently fitted with contact lenses, children under 13 are not usually given the option of lenses. Many eye doctors and parents don’t believe that children are mature enough to deal with them properly. With the right instruction, however, children as young as eight years old are very capable of wearing and caring for contacts and they should be offered the option. Generally, before your child purchases contacts, you should consult your optometrist to find out about any potential issues your child might have. Our Miramar optometry practice can help you determine the right prescription for your teen’s contacts. If your child or teenager is in need of vision correction, why not consider contact lenses? Through just a simple soft lens, you can enhance your teen’s self-image. With the large array of contacts on the market, you and your eye care practitioner can work with your child to decide what type of lens is most suitable for their character and lifestyle. For further assistance with your summer eye care and eyewear needs, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. Pearle Vision is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone
A
nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.
The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. Make Your Voice Heard in the Florida Legislature
“Titino”
Lori C. Moseley, Mayor
D
ear M iramar R esidents:
The first Tuesday of every March, the Florida Legislature meets for up to 60 days to create and amend laws that impact all in the state of Florida. To do this, they pass bills that undergo committee review, read three times on the floor of each house, approved by majority vote and then signed into law by the Governor. The Florida Legislature is made up of two houses: the Florida Senate which is made up of 40 members (State Senators) and the Florida House of Representatives that is made up of 120 members (State Representatives). On average, the Legislature passes about 300 bills into law annually. That is 300 laws that have some impact on most aspects of our lives, our family, our way of earning a living, and our quality of life. This is why I am encouraging everyone to make sure that those who represent us in Tallahassee know what we want. To let the State Legislature know what you want and where you stand on key issues, contact the Florida Legislature members who represent Miramar. Below are their names and contact information: State Senator Eleanor Sobel The “Old” Library, First Floor 2600 Hollywood Blvd Hollywood, FL 33020 Email: sobel.eleanor.web@flsenate.gov Phone: (954) 924-3693 State Senator Oscar Braynon II 606 NW 183rd Street Miami Gardens, FL 33169 Email: braynon.oscar.web@flsenate.gov Phone: (305) 654-7150 State Representative Sharon Pritchett 8910 Miramar Pkwy. What Homeowners Need to Know about Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
fter a two year effort, Florida legislators approved a new
foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and, instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment. In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Students from Beth Register’s 5th grade science classes at Sunset Lakes Elementary show off their successful projects from the school’s 6th Annual Egg Drop. The kids were asked to create a design to protect a fresh egg dropped from the roof of the school. The egg had to remain unbroken and make it to the ground in the least amount of time. In all, forty-nine eggs were dropped from the roof, including a submission by Principal Marc Charpentier (left). Fifty-one percent of the eggs survived the drop. The winning egg, submitted by Emma Wong, survived the drop and did so in 1.025 seconds.

The students were among hundreds of volunteers who took part in the January 18 event, which focused on how to best use locally grown food. The Miramar Community Garden sponsored the “Disco Soup” event that had students dancing to the music of the BeeGees while chopping produce that would have otherwise been wasted. Chef Trina with The Need to Feed (bottom right) created the healthy pot of soup, which was then donated to a local food pantry.

The 15th annual fundraiser was held January 19 at the Sunset Lakes Community Center.

Pancakes were the order of the day for the Kiwanis Club of Miramar/ Pembroke Pines annual Pancake Festival and Flea Market. Hosted along with the Florida Bible Church’s Trinidad Mission Team, the annual event was held January 25 at Florida Bible Church. Many members of the Kiwanis Club’s high school Key Clubs pitched in to help. Organizers say the fundraiser should help provide at least four scholarship for local students.
