A Time to be Thankful!

A

s hard as it is to believe , another year is

quickly drawing to a close. Summer vacation is now a mere memory. We’ve crashed from the Halloween sugar rush. With cooler nights ahead, we can enjoy the beauty of South Florida’s fall season. As the month of November takes hold, we begin to look forward to the coming holiday season. While families everywhere are busy making preparations for a delicious Thanksgiving feast, our Jewish friends will simultaneously celebrate Hanukkah as well, making this year a truly joyous time of togetherness. While we sit down this holiday season with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. In the blink of an eye, another year will have passed. Another year of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Miramar Creates New Partnership with Belize City By Julie Levin

T

hough many geographical miles apart, the cities of M iramar

and Belize City share enough similarities that they’ve decided to add a new dimension to their mutual relationship. Recently, leaders from both cities came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding-- or MOU-- to help promote a new exchange of ideas and collaboration between the two cities. “This is something we haven’t done, or at least haven’t done in a very long time,” said Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley. The signing ceremony took place September 24 at the Cultural Arts Center, located at 2400 Civic Center Place. The goal behind the agreement is to develop exchanges and collaborative activities in the areas of education, economic development, technical assistance, culture, tourism and social development with the aim of promoting mutual prosperity. In addition to Miramar City leaders including Commissioners Yvette Colbourne and Wayne M. Messam, a contingent from Belize City that included Mayor Darrell Bradley and Councillor Dion Leslie was also on hand. “This is the beginning of what we believe will be a beautiful relationship,” said Mayor Bradley. With a population of approximately 71,000 residents, Belize City is located in the country of Belize which is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. According to Mayor Bradley, his City had been searchMayor Lori Moseley talks about the agreement as Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley looks on

ing for strategic partners within the region to interact with in productive and meaningful way. Bradley says they learned about Miramar through Belizean Michael D. Young, a Miramar resident who earlier this year founded the Belize-American Chamber of Commerce. Through Young, an informal meeting was set-up between Mayor Bradley and Mayor Moseley. Bradley says the two saw immediate common ground in that both share large cities with diverse populations, tropical climates, tourism, eco-initiatives and a desire to develop economically.”The Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley and connection was immediate. I was Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley formally sign shocked by her energy, vision and the Memorandum of Understanding sincere commitment to expand the economic development of both cities,” he said. According to Michael Young, there are approximately 3,000 families of Belize heritage that call Florida home, the majority of them around Miramar and Pembroke Pines. “It’s diverse, it’s family oriented, there are a lot of great assets. Being a patriot of my country, I saw where it would be great for both cities to create synergies,” he said. City leaders are optimistic the MOU will be beneficial for all involved. “We in Miramar are proud and grateful for this collaboration with Belize City and look forward to the activities that will help both of us provide a better way of life for our residents,” said Mayor Moseley.

They hosted a backyard BBQ, that also served as an installation ceremony. “We wanted to do something a little more laid back and casual, and get to know each other a little better on a personal level,” said Angie Font, the group’s new President. The BBQ was held September The Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines officers: (l-r) Angie Font, President; 28 at the Pembroke Pines home of Debra Johnson, Secretary; Ann Lee, Director; Faye East, Treasurer. Lt. Gov. Dave Lockhart. In addition to Font, Debra Johnson was installed as Secretary, Ann Lee as Director and Faye East as Treasurer. They also welcomed the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pembroke Pines, which installed officers Rosina Lenardson as President, Matt Lenardson as Director, Edie Blum as Director and Richard Lenardson as Secretary. Now at the helm of the 15-member Miramar-Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club, Font says she is looking to bring in new members, and add more to their already crowded project agenda, which includes Christmas in July, Hope for Kidz Haiti, Adopt-a-Street and more. Just recently, Font said they were asked to serve on the planning committee for a new playground project at Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center in Pembroke Pines. “We want to get more involved in the yearly projects that go on in Miramar and Pembroke Pines,” she said.

One of the club’s first goals is preparing for this month’s Adopt-a-Turkey project. Each November, the club works to provide struggling families with a huge food basket for Thanksgiving. This year, through donations and food drives, they are anticipating helping close to 100 local families. The families will receive a week’s worth of food, as well as a gift card to purchase a turkey or other perishable items. Residents interested in helping out can purchase an adopt-a-turkey certificate for $10 and the proceeds go towards buying gift cards. The Kiwanis club has been serving the Miramar and Pembroke Pines communities since 1991. They host a number of service projects throughout the year and raise funds to provide college scholarships for local high school students. They also sponsor several Key Club and K-Kids service leadership programs in local schools. The club is looking for new members. Font says Kiwanis is a great way to become involved in the community. “You really get to know your neighbors and you make great friends and great connections,” Font said. “It always feels good to give back.” For more information on joining the club, or helping out with their Adopt-a-Turkey Thanksgiving Drive, visit them online at KiwanisMiramarPines.com. Salsa and Dance Festival Celebrates Hispanic Culture By Julie Levin

A

huge crowd helped turn up the vol-

ume at Miramar Regional Park recently with some great salsa, food and entertainment. The City hosted a free music festival October 5 to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Residents brought lawn chairs and blankets to spread out in front of the stage, but spent most of the night up on their feet dancing to live entertainment from Orquesta

Brava, Melao Band, Roxy La Rusa, Yohan Manuel, Kynto Elemento, Laura Vivas and headliner Roberto Blades. The concert was part of City’s on-going Culture in the Night Concert Series, and also featured Hispanic food favorites and beverages for purchase. City leaders said music is an ideal way to celebrate the heritage of a substantial part of its population. “The Miramar Hispanic community makes

up over a third of our population,” said Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne. “We are fortunate that this rich and diverse segment has decided to call Miramar their home. Regardless of where you come from or what language you speak, music is the one language we all understand.” The event was sponsored by the City of Miramar, Memorial Miramar Hospital and WastePro.

Feast and Friendship Highlight Annual Thanksgiving Tradition By Julie Levin

ing holiday traditions is again in the works. As it has for more than three decades, it will mean plenty of turkey and all of the Thanksgiving trimmings. The City’s Social Services Department will host its 32nd annual Thanksgiving Dinner November 19, and organizers say it is a chance for local seniors to give thanks and share a wonderful meal. Close to 200 seniors, as well as the City’s Mayor and Commissioners are expected to turnout. “It is a coming together to celebrate all that they are thankful for in their lives,” said Shaun Gayle, Program Manager for the Social Services Department. The special meal will begin at 6 p.m. at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex, located at 6700 Miramar Parkway. Seniors are being asked to dress in their finest attire and they’ll sit down to a beautiful table laid out with linens and china. The festivities will start with a presentation of the colors by the Miramar Police Color Guard, the singing of the national anthem, and then a “Praise Dance.” A DJ will help put everyone in the holiday mood before a traditional Thanksgiving meal is served. “Everyone wants to be a part of the holiday,” said Gayle.”The Thanksgiving dinner gives them a chance to come together to celebrate the day.” Now in its 32nd year, the dinner has long been a chance to provide a holiday celebration for seniors who may live far away from family or for those who are

new to the country and unfamiliar with the American Thanksgiving tradition. For many, it is a chance to celebrate the new relationships they have made. “They come together for the holiday and to appreciate the camaraderie they have forged over the years” said Gayle. The dinner is open to members of both senior centers in the City of Miramar. The Sunset Lakes Senior Center is in West Miramar, 2801 SW 186 Ave., while the senior center in the Multi-Service Complex is in East Miramar, 6700 Miramar Pkwy. Designed for residents who are at least 55 years old, both centers offer senior services such as counseling and support groups, information and referral, health and wellness, and recreational activities . For many, visiting the centers throughout the week gives them a feeling of belonging and friendship. The 32nd annual Senior Thanksgiving Dinner will be held November 19, beginning at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Senior Advisory Council and the City of Miramar. Tickets are $18 for members and $20 for non-members and transportation is included in the price. A bus is available to pick up the seniors at their homes. “Dream Big” Program Hosts Food Drive By Julie Levin

W

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for donation boxes at five city locations. Youngsters from Miramar’s DREAM BIG program is holding the food drive to help seniors and families in need.

ith the Thanksgiving holiday just

a few weeks away, some Miramar youngsters are making it easy for residents to help those families that are in need this time of year. The City of Miramar’s DREAM BIG Program is holding its 5th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this month, and they’ve created an easy way for residents to pitch in. “This is the fifth year we’ve done our food drive,” said Holly Hicks, Site Supervisor of the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center. “We have the kids decorate boxes and try to get everyone they know to donate canned goods and paper goods.” Since early October, the boxes have been in place at five locations around the city: the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center, Ansin Sports Complex, Miramar Town Center, Vizcaya Park and the Sunset Lakes Community Center. Early this month, the kids with DREAM BIG planned to arrange the donated food in baskets and send them to seniors citizens in need. Along with the canned goods, they also placed cards with positive messages in the baskets. The donation boxes will remain in place until November 15 to help additional residents. “With other donations, we can still donate goods to families that we know of that are in need,” said Hicks.

The DREAM BIG program is a mentoring program designed for young men and women between the ages of 10-17 years old. The idea behind the program is provide youngsters with guidance and help in making the right choices. “We use the program to mentor the children in the area, expose them to careers, colleges and different opportunities to think about their future and to guide them in the right way,” said Hicks. Participants also get the chance to earn school community service hours as well as learn basic day-to-day life skills through guest speakers, setting and achieving goals, field trips and more. Here are the locations for the food drive: ▸▸ Miramar Youth Enrichment Center, 7000 Miramar Parkway, Monday – Saturday ▸▸ Ansin Sports Complex, 10801 Miramar Blvd., Monday – Saturday ▸▸ Miramar Town Center, 2300 Civic Center Place, Monday – Thursday ▸▸ Vizcaya Park, 14200 SW 55 Street, Monday - Saturday ▸▸ Sunset Lakes Community Center, 2801 SW 186 Avenue, Monday – Saturday For more information about DREAM BIG or their food drive, call 954-602-4780 ext, 0.

Since purple ribbons are a symbol of the month, which is held in October, the department followed suit by adorning one unit with large purple ribbons and decals calling to “end the violence.” We took it to events throughout the city,” said Bridget Schneiderman, a victim advocate with the Miramar Police Department. “We wanted the residents to see it and be aware and really understand how the police departments supports ending domestic violence.”

The purple-themed patrol car was just one part of the awareness campaign the department launched city-wide. Display tables were set-up at the Miramar Town Center to provide resources and information to the community . “We want to educate how to help somebody, or to get help, what are the signs and what are the risk factors,” said Schneiderman. Posters were also placed at other city facilities to alert residents to the problem, and police department employees wore handmade purple ribbons. “We are really trying to get the community as a whole to embrace the idea of being active and raising awareness,” she added. A team from Miramar also took part in many of the countywide events that were held, including the annual Safewalk-Run 5K hosted by Women in Distress at Tradewinds Park October 26. “We feel it was very important to support that event because there are tremendous resources there,” said Schneiderman. National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about domestic violence, honor the strength of victims and survivors who have endured this, and work to stop the violence from continuing. Schneiderman works to promote domestic violence awareness throughout the year, but says she does see an increase in calls every October, and beyond. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be a victim or survivor. It could be a neighbor or a family member who things something just isn’t right, but may not know how to put words to it,” she said. “That’s why events like these are so important.” For more information, contact the Miramar Police Department Victim Services Unit at 954- 602-4348 or Women in Distress at 954-761-1133.

What is The Wow Factory? The Wow Factory

is a 22,000 square-foot indoor family entertainment facility located right off the Sawgrass Expressway in Coconut Creek. The inspiration behind this concept was, and still is, my kids. My wife and I have twin 10-year old boys, a nineyear old boy, and a seven-year old daughter. My background was commercial construction, but after many years taking my kids to birthday places and other facilities on weekends, I decided to take the plunge a do something that I considered bigger and better. I realized that my family was the target market. I simply followed the vision that if we created something that my family enjoyed, then everything would work out. I am always trying to look at the overall experience from the eyes of a parent, and it is my hope that this will always allow us to get better.

What are some of the activities and attractions offered at The Wow Factory? Our

activities include a multi-level Ballocity system, which is essentially a 3-4 level obstacle course and arena with an elaborate air compressor system, that allows kids to use blasters to shoot foam balls; an elevated “Sky-Trail” Ropes Course; a 2-level Laser Tag Arena; a 28’ Rock Wall; and over 50 video / redemption games. For the little ones we also have the “Wow Gym” which caters to the kids 3 and under.

What’s the best age to come and enjoy The Wow Factory? Our core age group is twotwelve years old.

Tell us about the more unique attractions at The Wow Factory. We have

two very unique attractions with Ballocity and our Sky-Trail ropes Course. The ballocity system is essentially a 3-4 level obstacle course and arena that allows kids to use blasters to shoot foam balls. The obstacle course has all kinds of play elements and five integrated slides that will completely wear out your kids. The elevated ropes course is very unique because it has over 16 different challenging course elements, and it is elevated over our arcade area. Children 48” and over can go by themselves, and children under 48” can be accompanied by an adult or parent.

What sets The Wow Factory apart from other children’s play gyms? I think the main

thing that sets us apart, besides our attractions, is our staff. We are very diligent in our hiring process and we really try to find the employees that have the personality and passion for being around kids. Most of our staff members are either high school or college kids. First and foremost, they must have kindness in their hearts and smiles on their faces. They must know how to have a good time, but always understand that the kids and guests come first. We constantly

efore they sit down to their own Thanksgiving dinners , Glades Middle School students will once again give of their time to make sure others in the community have a meal to enjoy as well. The Miramar school is once again serving as one of the distribution sites for this year’s Harvest Drive, the annual food drive that takes place at many schools each Thanksgiving. This year, the Harvest Drive at Glades Middle School is gearing up to provide more than 200 families with a week’s worth of groceries, all of the Thanksgiving fixings, plus a gift card to purchase a turkey and other perishable items for the holiday. The Glades Harvest Drive incorporates the food drive efforts of 23 south area schools, and became one of twelve distribution point for the countywide Harvest Drive four years ago. In their first year, they assisted close to 50 families, a number that has quadrupled.

Shopping bags covered the floor of the Glades Middle School gymnasium last year. Bags will again be packed to send a week’s worth of groceries home with the families

The official Harvest Days at Glades Middle will move into high gear November 19 when the participating schools will drop off the food they have collected for the drive. Over the next two days, Glades Middle students will began sorting and organizing the donations and create a small grocery store where they can “shop” for the families. Coordinator Jennifer Moser says her students are the ones that make the project work. “I encourage them by creating a culture of giving at our school, making it fun and make it the ‘cool’ thing to do,” said Moser, the Harvest Drive Coordinator who is also a Gifted/Advanced Language Arts teacher. Younger students pitch in by creating handmade cards that are sent home with the families. The Harvest Drive is a yearlong project that culminates in a charitable event that takes place in 150 Broward County Public Schools every Thanksgiving. Students, churches and temples conduct drives and supply the Harvest Drive with the non-perishable food, which is then distributed to the families. It began at Country Isles Elementary School in Weston 20 years ago, but now incorporates fundraising efforts and collections from across the county. If you’d like to help, monetary donations for gift cards, or donations of non-perishable items are still badly needed. Volunteers are also needed. Glades Middle School is located at 16700 SW 48th Court in Miramar. For drop off information, phone them at 754-323-4600. For more information, visit www. HarvestdriveFlorida.com.

Local Preschoolers are Record-Setting Readers By Julie Levin

W

hat ’ s the universal link of a children ’ s book that details

the friendship between an old tractor and a baby calf? The book, called “Otis” by Loren Long, recently took center stage not only at schools in Miramar, but nationwide as it is was the centerpiece of a record-breaking effort. Students at Miramar’s Early Childhood Program joined children around the world in the annual “Read For The Record” event, organized by the Jumpstart Organization. Each year, the group sets a day for schools worldwide to host a shared reading experience to help highlight the need for high quality early education. Last year, more than two million adults volunteered to be part of the project. This year the event took place October 3 in schools around the world, including all of Miramar’s Early Childhood classrooms. “We talk to our children about how important it is to read and that today is a special day,” said Karen Lewis, the City of Miramar Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley reads “Otis” to students at Sunset Lakes Early Childhood Center

Early Childhood Program Childcare Superintendent. In Miramar, more than 25 volunteer readers shared the love of reading with groups of pre-school children, including Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley who read at the Sunset Lakes Early Childhood Center. “Do you have books you like to read?” she asked the children before starting on “Otis”. Since one of the main characters in the storybook gets stuck in the mud in the book, the students also had fun seeing what sinks, and what doesn’t sink in mud. For preschoolers, chocolate pudding filled in for real mud. Lewis said the story delivered an important message to her students. “It is a story of friendship and how we help each other,” she said.

Choosing the Right Specialist for ACL Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone

A

The holidays may be especially difficult after

nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures

remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.

The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. He is Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained in Shoulder and Knee Ligament Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is a partner in the Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (954) 389-5900.

bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the

base of the big toe that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This causes the toe to bend toward the others resulting in an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Since this joint carries a significant amount of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can be extremely painful if untreated. How do you know if you have a bunion? Symptoms may include: development of a firm bump on the outside of the foot at the base of the big toe, redness, swelling or pain at or near the joint, corns or irritations caused by overlap of the first and second toes and restricted motion of the big toe. How do bunions form? Bunions may form when the normal balance of forces on the joints and tendons of the foot is disrupted . This may lead to instability in the joint and cause a deformity. The deformity is brought about by years of abnormal motion and pressure on the joint. They are caused commonly by the way we walk, our inherited foot type, or our choice of shoes.

What can you do to get relief? There are conservative treatments for bunion pain as well as surgical options. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of each bunion. Identifying the deformity early on in its development is the key in avoiding surgery. Podiatric medical attention should be sought at the first indication of pain, because if left untreated bunions may get larger and more painful. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

trong demand, combined with a limited supply

of homes, continues to fuel the double digit appreciation in home prices throughout Southwest Broward County. The competition for homes has frustrated buyers, some of whom have been searching for homes for months. Cash investors, who helped to revive the housing market to where we are today, still see the value in the pricing and are purchasing a majority of properties at or close to fair market value. In addition, global buyers, from Latin America and as far away as China, are currently and will continue to fuel our housing boom for some time to come. Although the pace of home sales has slowed slightly from the previous months, sales are steady. Most homes for sale that are priced at fair market value are still attracting multiple offers. Prices have been escalating at this pace or more for the past eighteen months. Industry leaders say that these price spikes are unsustainable; the question that remains is when prices will settle in. In my opinion, as the larger investor entities exit the market, prices will even out, which will present more opportunities for traditional buyers. With rising prices, homeowners are becoming energized to price increases and are finding it encouraging to enter the market. Many homeowners who had the desire to sell were holding off. They either owed more on their mortgage than the house was worth, and/or they couldn’t get the prices they wanted. Homeowners in this bracket now find themselves in a more favorable position and are jumping at the opportunity. This will assist our inventory challenge to a small degree. Although opportunities for potential buyers are limited, often leading to buyer frustration, I strongly encourage traditional buyers that are presently in the market for a home to continue on their quest and not to get discouraged. Most buyers get frustrated and want to postpone their purchase, which in my opinion doesn’t make a lot of financial sense. This will cost them more in the long term in regards to rising interest rates and the cost of the home itself. The longer you wait the “less home” you’ll get for the money. In many cases, buyers that wait “price themselves out of the market” by not being able to afford the home that were approved to purchase in the first place due to rising values. As a real estate professional who works diligently with buyers and sellers on a daily basis, I understand the emotional drain that can occur with buying or selling a home. It’s not easy to do, but if buyers and sellers can somehow find a way to separate their emotions from logic, things tend to fall into place much more easily. Legally Speaking

Homeowners Beware of Foreclosure Rescue and Short Sale Scams By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. · Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

S

outh Florida homeowners and consumers in foreclosure or

at risk of foreclosure are inundated with television commercials, mailers, and even phone calls from companies claiming they can save their home. These companies are usually unlicensed and inexperienced. They are looking for a quick profit at the expense of the consumer. Here are some of the foreclosure rescue scams against which all homeowners must beware: ▸▸ Out of state and local companies guarantee that they can cancel the foreclosure process, and save your home. They often present these promises in official looking documents, which appear government issued or from a bank. At the bottom of the mailer is a tiny disclaimer, which reveals the company is not tied to any bank or federal agency. Since these companies are either non-attorneys, or attorneys unlicensed to practice in the State of Florida, they CANNOT represent you in court. They also CANNOT charge you an upfront fee of any kind to assist you with a loan modification, as it is illegal under Florida law, punishable by civil and criminal penalties. ▸▸ Many realtors have also jumped unto the foreclosure rescue bandwagon, and are pushing short sales which are NOT in the best interests of many South Florida homeowners. I have personally witnessed realtors in court posing as homeowners or counsel before a judge in order to obtain foreclosure sale cancelations and extensions. We represent various clients whose realtors have even forged their signatures on official court documents and filed last minute bankruptcy petitions to stop foreclosure sales without the knowledge

32

November 2013 | miramar town times

or permission of the homeowner. This process is also illegal and is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for federal prosecution. ▸▸ One other emerging scam is the land trust transfer. The way this unethical scam works is that a company will partner with a less than reputable law firm to prepare a land trust for the property in question, and transfer your title to a land trust over which you have zero control. Then, they file a court action by the land trust to remove the mortgage lien from the property. This process is not a legitimate means of saving your home. You will only lose your money and the title to your home if you fall for this scam. If you have already fallen prey to one of these scams, demand your money back immediately and go to the appropriate authorities if they refuse to refund you money. There is only one way for homeowners to avoid these unethical and sometimes illegal scams -- hire a reputable and knowledgeable law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, to represent your interests and obtain the best possible outcome, be it aggressive foreclosure defense, loan modification, short sale or bankruptcy. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in the instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your visit to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Happy holidays to you all! This time of year feels so special to me and I am sure to you all. The cooler temperatures are a great change from the usual balmy, summer like conditions that we are used to experiencing. While some of us did move down here to escape the winter weather of the north, it is nice for a cooler temperature. Another reason that this time is so special is that we have made it through some very difficult financial years due to the recession and housing market collapse. While not completely out of the woods, there has been some relief through efforts such as mortgage modifications, new jobs, new careers and more frugal living. It is for this new standard of living that I feel we should celebrate to remember why we work so hard and try every day to make our lives better. It is for our families. During the month of December, your City has scheduled several delightful opportunities to share with your families. They are: ▸▸ Holiday Tree Lighting at the Miramar Town Center, Friday, December 6 from 6:30-7:00 PM where our Early Childhood Chorus and Jimmie Butler will entertain you; ▸▸ Holiday Tree Lighting at Shirley Branca Park, Saturday, December 7 from 6:00-9:00 PM will feature live entertainment, the lighting of the holiday tree, bounce houses for the children, holiday characters and a visit from the North Pole. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. ▸▸ Winter Wonderland at Miramar Regional Park will feature mechanical rides for all ages, and plenty of food for purchase. The carnival dates and times are as follows: Friday, December 13 from 5 pm – 11 pm; Saturday, December 14 from 2 pm – 11 pm, and Sunday, December 15 from 12 noon to 9 pm. Presale ride bracelets will be available beginning in November at various city centers. Ride bracelets can also be purchased on site during carnival hours. Opening night, Friday, December 13 will feature our ‘Snow Day’. Snow passes are free and will be available on site. Snow ages are 12 and under. A special North Pole area will be open at various hours during the weekend to delight the children with visits from Santa and holiday characters. Bring your camera to capture all those great moments. Park admission is $3 per car, per day. It is my hope that you take the opportunity to attend any one of these events as a reminder of what the holidays bring to all of us. While our lives maybe a bit different now, the holidays are a time where we take a moment to reflect back on the year passed, be grateful for the people in our lives and to strive to make the following year better not just for ourselves but for all those who matter most in our lives. I wish you a safe and brilliant time with your loved ones and also wish you a wonderful and a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwanzaa , a Happy Hanukkah, and a prosperous New Year! Warmest regards, Lori C. Moseley Mayor

Facts Every Parent Should Know About Pink Eye By Michael Chesen, OD

E

very year , over 3 million school days in the

United States are missed because of conjunctivitis – also known as “pink eye” – according to a recent study. Conjunctivitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the thin, clear membrane that covers the inside of your eyelids and the white part of your eye (the sclera). Pink eye can be caused by viral infections, bacterial infections and allergic reactions. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis can be quite contagious, and both are easily spread through contact with nose or eye secretions, usually through hand-to-eye contact or poor contact lens care. Pink eye is often spread in school and day care settings. Good hygiene and hand-washing can help prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. If your child is infected, make sure they wash their hands often, avoid touching their eyes and don’t reuse towels. Pillowcases should also be changed frequently. Viral conjunctivitis can last one to two weeks before disappearing on its own. For bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye care physician typically prescribes antibiotic eye drops to treat the infection.

A Celebration of Dance

Traditional Mexican dance took center stage during a recent Hispanic Heritage Celebration featuring Griselda Castro’s Mexican folklore show at the Miramar Branch Library. Castro performed colorful dances representing different states: a white dress from Veracruz and a red dress from Jalisco. She also performed in colorful costume from Chiapas. Guests also enjoyed a pinata and a taste of Mexican foods.

Expert Growers Make a Visit

The Transforming Our Community’s Health (TOUCH) Initiative organized a series of events for small farmers, garden growers, community gardeners, market gardeners and farmers’ market managers to expand the capacity to grow and sell healthy food in Broward County. One of their visits included the Miramar Community Garden and included professional Extension staff and faculty from University of Florida, Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences’ (UF/IFAS) Small Farms Program and Florida Organic Growers.

A Miramar Welcome

Seeking Insurance Help

More than 80 seniors turned out to learn more about the new options in the insurance marketplace. The program, held September 21, was hosted by the Friends of the Miramar Library and included a panel of speakers from various state and local agencies as well as AARP. There was also an expo of providers available to answer specific insurance questions and provide take home materials.
