E
very year we welcome spring as a sign of renewal and progress. After this winter’s prolonged cold-weather period we can finally enjoy the pleasant temperatures and sunshine that South Florida is famous for. While we watch the news reports of the last snow and ice storms ravaging our northern states, we welcome our visitors from those colder climates. And we realize just HOW LUCKY WE ARE ! Of course not everything is perfect with the economy still in dire need of rebuilding and with the occasional hurricane visiting us, but in the overall scheme of things FLORIDA is the place we choose to live. And rightly so. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey & Co. in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day ? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment during the night ? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the intracoastal dining scene - all on the same boat trip ? Only in Florida ! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some FUN. Sincerely,
SvenSvenBudzisch Budzisch Publisher/Owner

community news 13th Annual Art Festival in the Pines Returns By Debby Teich
M
ore than 15,000 people are expected to attend the 13th Annual Art Festival in the Pines to enjoy some great art, entertainment, crafts and food. The free event is presented by the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Department. “In this time of budget cuts, we want to make sure that art still remains an active part of our community,” said Advisory Board Chair Rose Colombo. “Art is good for the soul and spirit.” The festival will be held on March 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers moved the event from the Academic Village to the Pembroke Pines City Center, just west of City Hall, at 10300 Pines Boulevard. The new location offers additional space for artists, as well as more accessible parking. The festival started 13 years ago when a small group of artists set up tables around the lake at the City Hall building. It has continued to grow and over 100 artists will be featured in this year’s juried show. They will be displaying and selling a variety of items at all price levels, including acrylic and oil, sculpture, photography, glass, water color and pastels, wood, mixed media, jewelry, plants, fine crafts and more. Artists from the Schott Communities (providers of services to deaf or disabled
adults and young adults) will be returning this year to display their art work. All of the artists will have an opportunity to win $500 for Best in Show, as well as $350 in seven different categories. This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Magic of the Islands.” “We want people to leave their worries behind and enjoy a fun-filled, tropical weekend at the festival,” said Colombo. “There will be something for everyone.” Throughout the weekend, there will be a variety of local entertainment, with performances by senior citizens, dance troupes, student groups, belly dancers, and more. There will be a children’s tent with free art activities. There will also be plenty of food and drink. Joyce Brunsfield has attended the festival for the past five years. She has purchased several pieces of art and jewelry. “I look forward to the festival all year long,” said Brunsfield. “The artwork is always terrific and the food is delicious. I also love running into friends and neighbors. It is a real community event.” For information, call 954-986-5027 or visit www. ppines.com. The 13th Annual Art Festival in the Pines will be held on March 12 and 13, at the Pembroke Pines City Center.

D
ermaSwiss is an exclusive brand of quality skin care products from Switzerland dedicated to preventing premature aging and maintaining the skin’s youthful glow. Elements Laser Center and Med Spa is featuring the DermaSwiss Bioclarifying Treatment this month. Its unique combination of Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C, keeps the skin healthy, and increases collagen/elastin synthesis. Results are visible after the first appointment, with maximum results after four sessions. We all know the importance of having a facial. Imagine the benefits of having a daily skin care routine. DermaSwiss Vitamin C is recommended in anti-oxidants, whitening and mature skin treatments. Vitamin C diminishes the effects of freeradicals, prevents dark spots, keeps a healthy skin, and stimulates collagen synthesis. The Glycolic Acids are used in cosmetics as moisturizers, emollients and exfoliants. They have been used to rejuvenate tired skin, reduce the occurrence of wrinkles and fine lines, clean and flush pores, help even skin tone, help diminish and reduce any noticeable effects of scarring, which makes them indispensable in most acne protocols. This beauty treatment helps remove excess accumulations of dead cells from the corneum layers of the epidermis by reducing the effects of acne through progressive micro exfoliation produced by alpha hydroxy and fruits acids. It diminishes fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, and combats premature aging. It also contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Imagine the thrill that you will secretly harbor when you know that you are the envy of all your friends because you have the most beautiful skin any of them have ever seen. Do not forget about sunscreen. DermaSwiss offer a moisturizing and noncomedogenic formula. DermaSun SPF-25 protects the skin by blocking solar rays and preventing cellular oxidation. community news Elvis to Appear in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich
E
lvis has NOT left the building! In fact, he will be appearing in Pembroke Pines at the Susan B. Katz Theatre - River of Grass ArksPark, 17195 Sheridan St. On March 16, Chris MacDonald will be presenting a Tribute to the King, Elvis Presley. MacDonald’s “Memories of Elvis” show has been featured at Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis. There will be a Wine and Cheese Reception and Silent Auction from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The show begins at 7 p.m. The audience will have an opportunity to enjoy some great entertainment, and all for a good cause. The event is a fundraiser for the Davie/Cooper Rotary City and Prestige Club. Proceeds from the ticket fee will benefit the Rotary Club’s Black Stallion Literacy Project. The national project introduces children to the joy of reading through the magic of horses and the popular Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. The goal of the project is to spark imagination and the desire to read in first grade students. After local elementary school students had an opportunity to visit with horses, they read Farley’s Little Black, A Pony and wrote stories chronicling their experiences. More than 400 children also participated in a Black Stallion event at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. They read to the horses and learned how to properly care for them. The Davie/Cooper City Rotary Club has supported the Black Stallion Literacy Project for the past eight years. The Rotary is committed to several projects which educate young people locally, nationally and internationally. “As Rotarians we believe in actively helping our community,” said Shawn Meiman, President of the Davie/Cooper City Rotary. “Eliminating illiteracy is a goal of the Black Stallion reading literacy program. Education is empowering and reading is essential to that goal.” Rotary also supports the Polio Plus program on
an international level. “It is important to make vaccinations available and to eliminate this preventable disease,” added Meiman. Tickets for the event are $25 per person. To purchase tickets or for information, contact Russ Hopkins at 954-961-4450.

Pembroke Pines mayor Frank C. Ortis
Y
MCA Broward presented a Roof Raising Event on February 3 in the City of Pembroke Pines. I want to let you know about the public/private partnership that we have developed with the YMCA. This particular project has far surpassed any that the YMCA has done. We in the City of Pembroke Pines are always happy to be innovative, and to be leaders in these great projects. This project creates hundreds of jobs initially in construction but then goes on to create permanent jobs to sustain the project. I will keep you updated on how this project develops. I hosted a town hall meeting on January 26, and greatly appreciated the number of people who turned out to meet with me and other city officials to view the City of Pembroke Pines’ 5-year visioning plan. Residents also had a chance to ask questions and voice their opinions about various issues that we plan to address going forward. We asked the residents several questions: what features of the city do you want to keep the same? What features of the city do you want to change? What new features would you like to see developed? The answers were interesting and gave me a good indication of how our residents feel about their city. In answer to the question about what features of the city to keep the same, the responses included: beautiful parks, cleanliness, nice shopping centers, green grass, trees, landscaping, SW Focal Senior Center, the police department, charter schools, safety, Studio 18 Art Gallery, the fire department, shuttle bus, good hospitals and bus service. In answer to the question about what features of the city you would want to change, I was pleased with the audience participation, and responses with constructive comments and suggestions that can improve the city. These included such suggestions as a trauma center, better maintenance at the senior facilities, more pedestrian-friendly roadways, movie theaters, generators in gas stations, more activities for young adults, improved traffic management, and more police patrols. Time constraints at the town hall meeting did not allow us to fully receive and explore answers and comments regarding the question of what new features residents would like to see developed in our city, However, I would welcome any continued input from all residents on this question: What new features would residents like to see developed in our city? You can respond to me by email at fortis@ppines.com or you can call my office at 954-435-6505. For information on the City or Pembroke Pines, visit www.ppines.com.

Dear Miramar Residents: miramar mayor lori c. moseley
I
n my letter last month, I conveyed to you how cities are faced with the task of “doing more with less and less,” that we are all aware of the economic challenges, and that these challenges will be with us for awhile. While it may have started out grim, I wanted to share with you all how Miramar could not and would not use that as an excuse to ever stop trying to improve our residents’ quality of life. It is for this reason that Miramar embraced sustainable development. This type of development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The purpose of this letter is to continue to provide more examples of how Miramar is advocating sustainable development. As stated last month, Miramar has employed a 360 degree approach: an all-embracing, top-down, bottom-up grassroots path towards sustainability. The effort stems from the environmental initiatives that ranked high during the last two visioning sessions held in 1997 and 2009. A few examples of implementation of sustainable projects include: ▸▸ Miramar has entered into a new solid waste agreement with Waste Pro. The new five year contract will lower residents’ monthly fees from $27.11 to $18.75, resulting in a cumulative savings of $3.5 million per year. The new service will provide brand new 96 gallon trash cans for each residence as well as a future implementation of a more aggressive recycling program that would allow residents to mix recyclables with regular trash. ▸▸ Miramar implemented a Reclaimed Water Distribution System Expansion due to the rapid growth of the City. The system was developed in order to provide reclaimed water to new customers as an alternative water supply to offset increased demands of potable water. Its benefits include: ▸▸ Forgoing major growth-related water system Capital Improvement Project expenditures; ▸▸ Maintaining low operating costs and competitive utility rates; ▸▸ Incorporating approximately 1,850 new households from three residential sub-divisions into Miramar’s reuse water distribution system; ▸▸ Incorporating two commercial sub-divisions in western Miramar into Miramar’s reuse water distribution system; ▸▸ Promoting the City’s Green Initiative; ▸▸ Providing future revenue enhancement opportunities; ▸▸ Reuse not affected by mandatory water shortage orders; ▸▸ Reducing power and maintenance expenses for irrigation pumps; ▸▸ Reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides; ▸▸ No staining or rusting on exposed exterior surfaces My fellow commissioners and I know that the stakes couldn’t be higher. We believe that government can have a real impact on everyone’s quality of life. We know that by improving the quality of life you improve not just the economy but the social and political prospects for everyone. And if we care about the dream of a better life for our children, we need to pay attention and take action. In the end, each of us, in our own way, fights for a better tomorrow. I believe that our great City of Miramar does more than talk about what should be done ---- we work to offer more than a place to live, we work to contribute to a good life. community news Pembroke Pines to Celebrate 51st Birthday By Debby Teich
L
ast year, the City of Pembroke Pines celebrated its 50th birthday by extending the traditional Pines Day event into an 11-day fair. The event was such a success that the City plans to do it again. From March 31 to April 10, the City of Pembroke Pines will celebrate its 51st birthday, featuring a carnival, concerts, entertainment and a variety of community based activities and events. The Pembroke Pines Fair will be held at the Pembroke Pines City Center, located on Pines Boulevard, just west of Palm Avenue. “It is a great family event with something for everyone,” said Director of Recreation Carol Campisi. Proceeds will benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. The event kicks off with the Second Annual “Taste of Pines” on March 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy samples of delicious cuisine from restaurants throughout Pembroke Pines, complimented by drinks from the wine and beer tasting portion of the event. The Debbie Orta Jazz Quartet will provide the evening’s entertainment. Only 500 tickets will be sold for the “Taste of the Pines” event. From April 1 to 10, the City Center will be the site of a full carnival with Midway rides, food and attractions. A stage will be set up for performances by local school groups and organizations, as well as musical performances that will include classic rock, reggae, Latin Salsa, jazz, country and more. There will be something special happening every day. On April 1, charter schools will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. and Power 96 will host a teen DJ party from 9 to 11 p.m. On April 2, The City will celebrate Pines Day with a cake cutting at 4 p.m., local school performances from noon to 4 p.m., and bands from 6 to 9:30 p.m. On April 3, local schools and dance troupes will perform from 1

legally speaking Take Head Injuries Seriously By Howard Citron
S
ome of the most common injuries in a car accident or slip and fall case involve a victim’s head. A blow to the head can seem minor at first. It might not cause any immediate pain, bruising, or bleeding. However, hours later it can turn serious, even fatal. It is very common for someone who has had a fall or been in a car accident to appear perfectly fine immediately after the impact but then suddenly and rapidly deteriorate. After the “accident” – which doesn’t have to be serious at all – a person can seem perfectly normal, but there may be a silent skull fracture or a broken blood vessel bleeding in the brain or between the skull and the brain. As blood leaks from a ruptured artery and puts pressure on the brain, the classic symptoms of a traumatic brain injury begin to appear: nausea, severe headache, glassy eyes, or sudden sleepiness. Symptoms can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours – or even several days – to begin. For anyone involved in a car accident, sports injury, or just a slip in the driveway, recognizing the signs of brain injury early is critical. Preventing permanent brain damage depends on getting to a hospital within the first few hours because damage caused by brain swelling often is irreversible. Trauma teams are taught that when people have been in a car crash and someone involved in the accident dies, they should assume that everyone else has serious injuries – even if they look good and say they feel fine. If you are involved in a car accident or slip and fall and suffer head trauma please remember these rules: ▸▸ Go to the emergency room. Even if you feel like everything is fine, it is mandatory for someone in an emergency setting to evaluate your medical condition. ▸▸ Mandate that a CT scan of your head is performed. Physical examination alone may not be sufficient to conclusively diagnose a brain injury or internal complications. ▸▸ If you experience the “classic signs and symptoms” of a head trauma, advise family members of what you are feeling so that they can advocate for you with your treating health care providers. An emergency room that is busy with lots of patients may be eager to send you home despite your medical history. Family members can help you demand admission to the hospital for further necessary evaluation.
Accidents happen.
They can even happen to you.

▸▸ Following discharge from the emergency room, make sure that you are supervised by family members who will be actively looking for changes in your mental status. The sooner these changes are discovered, the sooner you can be taken back to the emergency room.

cover story POC Serves Fresh Sushi and Asian-Fusion Cuisine By Stacey Bomser
T
he only thing better than fresh sushi is all-you-can-eat fresh sushi. That’s why sushilovers drive from all over South Florida to eat at POC Buffet & Grill in Weston. This gourmet, buffetstyle restaurant serves the freshest sushi around, plus an extensive menu of Asian-fusion cuisine including Japanese-style Hibachi. This is definitely not your typical buffet restaurant. “We are setting a new standard,” states Will Lin, owner of POC Buffet & Grill. “I strongly believe that if you give people more than what they expect, it always pays off.” That is certainly the case here. Just check out the reviews. “Google us!” encourages Will. “People are raving about us on the internet. We are consistently one of the Top Ten restaurants in South Florida according to UrbanSpoon.com. That’s out of over 2,000 restaurants. And we are ALWAYS the number one in the buffet and sushi categories.” It’s not surprising that POC is ranked so favorably. Just look at what Food Lover Tom had to say in his UrbanSpoon.com review: “I am spoiled I lived in manhattan for 30 years the best of everything including SushiBut I have found one in Broward County Fl!!!! POC of Weston- excellent fresh fish, festival atmosphere, nice service- worth a drive out to West Broward.” POC also has quite a following on Yelp.com. Here’s what Lisa A. wrote: “Love this place! The Crazy Rolls
are the BEST! Most sushi found at buffets tend to be “questionable”, but this place is the real deal. The fish is fresh and the chefs are constantly putting out new dishes.” Jimmy B. was also impressed by the freshness of the sushi. “The sushi chefs behind the counter were working CONSTANTLY like robots refilling and quickly refilling plates of sushi.” You don’t earn these rave reviews unless you continually deliver excellent food and service. At POC there is no compromise on quality for quantity. The bodacious buffet boasts over 100 freshly prepared items, from sushi to gourmet Asian-American fusion cuisine to delectable desserts. The star of the show at POC is definitely the sushi buffet, featuring over 30 selections of sushi, sashimi and
24
skillfully prepared rolls each day. The selection may vary depending upon what fresh fish is available each day, but the restaurant has several specialty rolls always on the menu. Will recommends diners try the House Roll with eel, avocado and tuna on the inside and tuna, salmon, whitefish and avocado on the outside. The sushi chefs’ culinary creativity is further evident in rolls such as the Caribbean Roll with salmon, lettuce, avocado, cucumber and pickles, or the Las Vegas Roll with unagi, cream cheese, salmon, avocado and masago. There are also plenty of picks for non fish eaters such as the Tempura Roll with sweet potato, carrot, green bean and squash. Once you’ve had your fill of sushi, grab a clean plate, or two, and head for the buffet. There are about 25 items on the hot bar including POC’s famed “Grand Marnier Shrimp.” Other Asian-inspired items include sesame chicken, shrimp tempura, steak wrapped asparagus, fried rice and much more. On weekend nights, the buffet features gourmet dishes such as Filet Carpaccio and Tempura Crusted Grouper. The cold bar offers fresh seafood selections including Alaskan Snow Crab legs, cocktail shrimp, oysters and mussels, as well as a small salad bar. On top of all the wonderful buffet items, POC offers cooked-to-order Japanese-style hibachi. Choices include NY strip steak, chicken breast, shrimp or scallops. Regardless of what you pick, you know it’s fresh. “We are constantly changing out the food and sushi on the buffet. Nothing sits for long,” says Will. “But our food is so good the serving dish plate is usually empty long before then.” Be sure to save room for dessert. POC offers a delicious array of tasty treats including homemade crème brulee, plus cookies, brownies and assorted ice cream. There is also a selection of fresh fruit. POC Buffet & Grill is open daily. The lunch buffet is $11.50 Monday through Friday and $12.50 on Saturday and Sunday. The dinner buffet is $17.95 Monday through Thursday and $19.95 Friday through Sunday. The restaurant offers special pricing for children, depending

upon their size, not age. “We find this is an extremely fair way to price our buffet,” explains Will. “It definitely works out to your advantage, as most children are still able to receive special pricing when they are older than the traditional children’s menu age of 10.” At POC, children under age three eat for free; children from 36 to 48 inches tall pay 1/3 of the adult price; and children from 48 to 60 inches tall pay ½ of the adult price.
POC Buffet & Grill is worth the drive to Weston. It is located at 1651 Bonaventure Boulevard, next to Walgreens near Weston Town Center. For more information visit www.pocbuffet.com or call (954) 389-5188. POC accepts reservations for parties of six or more, and can accommodate private parties. www.pinesmiramartowntimes.com

ists, including Curtis Arnett, Mary Ann Carroll, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, R. L. Lewis, R. A. McClendon Sr., Willie Reagan and Carnell Smith. The paintings will be on display through March 28. The Highwaymen are all very talented, but they were unknown at the time. They knew that they would have to find a way to be different if they wanted to sell their artwork. The self-taught painters formed a group and started painting from their garages and backyards on inexpensive wood. On weekends, they would load their paintings into the trunks of their cars and travel on I-95 and AIA to sell them to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals for around $25 a piece. Many considered this to be the beginning of Florida’s contemporary art tradition. The Highwaymen officially disbanded in the 1980’s. The 200,000 plus original paintings have become popular among collectors and art enthusiasts, often selling for as much as $5,000. In 2004, the Highwaymen were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Due to a recent increase in demand for their work, several of the original highwaymen have started painting again. The Glass Gallery exhibit features several original paintings from each of the eight artists. There also signed and numbered giclées, which sell for less. Benoit “Ben” Menasche, Glass Gallery Art Curator and Administrator,

remembers seeing some of their paintings when he visited the Aztec Motel nearly 50 years ago. “The Highwaymen are part of our Florida history and we are honored to have them at the Glass Gallery,” said Menasche. “Their art depicts simple Florida scenes that are very beautiful. The colors are magnificent.” The Glass Gallery is located in the lobby of Pembroke Pines City Hall, 10100 Pines Blvd. For information, call 954-986-5027 or visit www.ppines.com.

Legally Speaking When Is the Right Time for Homeowners to File for Bankruptcy Protection? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days.
Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. The Arcia Law Firm has assisted hundreds of local homeowners and consumers in bankruptcy and foreclosure defense matters. If uncertain whether you qualify for bankruptcy protection or whether it is the right time to file bankruptcy, please contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com. Likewise, if you know anyone that is facing a mortgage related crisis, or is considering filing bankruptcy, please forward this article to them immediately.

taying motivated to continue on an exercise program is not an easy thing to do. The first few months of any exercise program can feel like time is standing still. There are aches and pains from using muscles that have been in hibernation. Those constant aching reminders seem to plague every waking moment of the day. Then there is finding the time to plan this seemingly masochistic torture. After a few long weeks, the activity begins to feel less and less worthwhile. In a nut shell, the first few months of an exercise program yields a lot of pain for little benefit so staying motivated can prove to be a feat on its own. Most people end up discontinuing the exercise program. As a physician and an avid exerciser, this is very disappointing to me. I really want to see people succeed so they can feel better as they benefit from the regular activity. There has to be more to exercise than just weight loss as a goal, because weight loss eventually plateaus. If that happens before the aches and pains go away, most will quit. One of the most effective ways to overcome this is to set small goals that are tied to big achievements. Simply adding exercise to your already busy schedule and viewing it as another task or chore is not likely to result in a lasting behavior. If you tie the exercise as means to a goal, it takes on a whole new paradigm. Using the exercise as a tool that allows you to achieve some of the goals you set will help you stay motivated while keeping your body lean and fit. Here are a few suggestions that seem to work quite well for most people ready to embark on an exercise program. ▸▸ Set a goal to complete an organized sporting or fitness event like a run or a walk that supports a good cause. You’re much more likely to stick to your goals if they tied to achievements that benefit more than just yourself. ▸▸ Motivate others to join you for some friendly competition. Competition is a healthy way to push you to work harder. ▸▸ Sign up for a fitness message board. They are full of inspiration from men and women who have accomplished similar goals. There is a lot to be learned from other people’s achievements and failures. Staying motivated is not generally an inherent behavior. Using a little psychology to stimulate your mind is a simple tool that goes a long way. The LeanLife Today program incorporates life coaches and mental health professionals who will provide you with the tools you need to help you stay on an exercise program so you can loose the weight. Our goal is to help you maintain the weight loss by addressing more than just caloric intake. We teach you how to identify the obstacles that lead to exercise discontinuation and give you the motivational tools you need so you can live an active and LeanLife Today. reventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” ▸▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit www.clevelandclinicflorida.org.

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?
Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Health & Wellness The Truth About Healing & Health By Dr. Joseph M. Buckley, D.C.
H
ow does everyone heal? Where does healing come from? What is health? Am I really healthy? Health is one of the highest priorities for everyone and is worthy of contemplating these questions. No doctor, medical, chiropractor, orthopedic, neurologist etc… can heal you. Good doctors can help you heal. The source of all healing comes from inside you. The power that made the body heals the body. No healing occurs from the outside. When you were created the first and most important organ to develop was your brain. Your brain is an electric energy healing power source responsible for all healing. Your brain is the greatest most complex creation in the universe. Your amazing brain must orchestrate all functions of your entire body. How? Directly out of your brain comes the spinal cord and out of the spinal cord are 31 pairs of nerves branching off and literally control every single function of every cell, tissue, muscle and organ. Then all of cells, tissue, muscle and organs send information back to your brain thru your spinal cord. Your spinal cord is your life line between your brain (healing source) and your body. Your central nervous system (C.N.S.) is your master system that controls all other 8 systems, muscular, digestive, immune, circulatory, etc… The brain-spine-nerves central nervous system is protected by a skull and 24 movable spinal bones/vertebrae. In between each spinal bone, spinal nerves branch out to your body. When these spinal bones move out of place, they irritate and damage the spine, spinal nerves and discs. This is called subluxation. Subluxation is a serious and dangerous condition that literally blocks and disconnects your healing energy to whichever body parts that spinal nerve controls. When your cells, tissues and organs receive less healing energy from your brain over time, malfunction, disease and lastly pain occur. Subluxations are mostly silent because research proves you can only feel 6% of your entire body. Most subluxations cause havoc to your body, but you feel no pain.
The Health Solution
Truly principled chiropractors do 100% natural adjustments to correct subluxations. We use our hands to gently and specially realign your spinal bones. This unblocks and releases your healing energy from your brain to your body and above down inside out. Adjustments reconnect you to your healing source. All healing is an inside job. Medications disconnect you from your healing source. The essence of how you heal is directly related to the ability of your brains healing power source to flow down your spine thru your nerves to all body parts and back without interference. This is the most important highest priority key to ensure you and your family regains true health and maintains good health. Chiropractic is 116 years old and the second largest health profession in the world. Chiropractic is 100% natural and gives you great results naturally.
What is Health?
Health is when all of your cells, tissue, muscles and organs are functioning 100%. How your body is functioning is the true indicator of health. Feeling good or no pain is not the best indicator. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many diseases are silent for years.
Am I Really Healthy?
You must work on a holistic approach. You are a physical, mental and spiritual being. You must apply strategies on a regular basis to maintain good health. Chiropractic gives you easy to apply holistic strategies so you and your family can live healthier, happier lives and reach your full potential naturally. For information, call Dr. Joseph M. Buckley and Dr. Damian Martinez at (954) 432-3343, or visit Pines West Chiropractic at 18501 Pines Blvd, Suite 104, Pembroke Pines (Just west of McDonald’s in the 3-Story White Bldg). www.pinesmiramartowntimes.com To Advertise in Pines Miramar Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007

hat could be more devastating than the diagnosis of Breast Cancer - the aftermath? The thought of cancer is one thing. However, it is the surgery, recovery, surgical outcome, treatment, and side effects that are the real struggle on the way to cure or long term management. You are, overnight, a different person. Your outlook changes. Your body image is altered. Your mind and focus shifts. Your mortality is staring you in the face. You’ve heard the stories and perhaps witnessed a friend or a love one diagnosed, but until it is on your doorstep you just can’t imagine. You are motivated to fight for your life, but you don’t want anything to change. Unfortunately, that is not the reality. The reality is that everything changes. Your every decision is critical. Your life is filled with appointments, tests, consultations and then the treatment ensues. You are told things you don’t understand and names of medications you can’t pronounce. You are given calendars that seem like forever and meet a group of people you wish you never had to know. It slowly sinks in and you realize your plight. You dig deep and work hard to understand and comply, making deals with yourself and others; if I can only get through this! And then you walk through the door of the Image Recovery Center where young, caring women take you in and begin to put you back together again. They schedule your surgery. They provide the special clothing you need to get you through those tough days when drains and tubes have become a part of your anatomy. Yes you will lose a part or all of your breast, but we will help you manage. We will show you, measure you, and restore you until reconstruction, if that is your choice. Yes, you need chemotherapy. Yes your hair will fall out, but it is here that you can come and cut your hair before it falls out, choose a wig that looks like you now, and have it cut and styled in privacy or with friends and love ones. If you cry, laugh or faint, loving arms are there with big shoulders. There is someone, just like you, who has been there and done that, and to see her now, you’d never know. Maybe I’ll make it to? The environment is spa like, with good yogi music flowing or Oprah on the flat screen. It looks like shopping with clothes, wigs, lotions, hats, scarves and books. Then you spot the manicure table and the pedicure spot, a dressing room where you aren’t cramped and a soft robe to keep you comfortable during it all. There is a woman doing acupuncture and another one getting a massage- it doesn’t look like a cancer place. That’s the idea… come here to recover “you,” the person you knew before the dreaded day, to make it easier, to keep it private, to make something God awful, a little bit better. Have a cup of tea, always something to nosh, an inviting spot, with no pressure, just caring and hoping we can do a little something to make it a bit easier. It’s about being there, caring, relating and hoping to provide support at every step of the way until you find you again…. Memorial’s Image Recovery Center is located on the campus of Memorial Hospital West at 604 North Flamingo Road, Suite 159, in Pembroke Pines. it’s their business Dr. Weiss Offers Patients Next Generation of Gynecological Care By Stacey Bomser

or Dr. Simon Weiss, the health and wellness of his patients is always a top priority. He is committed to providing patients the best medical care possible. That is why he is always one of the first physicians to adopt cutting-edge technology, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System. da Vinci® is a breakthrough surgical technology designed to expand a surgeon’s capabilities. It provides a minimally invasive option for complex gynecological surgical cases such as hysterectomies, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, or removal of scar tissue in the pelvis. “da Vinci® allows me to do certain procedures laparoscopically that before had to be done with an open incision,” explains Dr. Simon Weiss, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. “This significantly improves patient recovery.” Dr. Weiss has found great success using da Vinci® to perform hysterectomies. Not only does the state-of-the-art technology offer him, as a surgeon, greater precision and control, but patients have significantly less pain and a faster recovery. “Traditionally, after a radical hysterectomy a patient spent four days in the hospital, now they stay just one night,” says Dr. Weiss. “It used to take about a month to recover, now it’s generally less than two weeks. Some patients are even back to work in four days.” This is because da Vinci® allows doctors to perform complex procedures and major surgery through the smallest incisions. It was originally introduced for cardiovascular surgery, but now is used primarily by urologists to perform prostatectomies. Dr. Weiss is one of a few gynecologists using da Vinci® to perform benign (not cancer) surgery. One of the reasons there are a limited number of surgeons using this device is because the training is extensive. Dr. Weiss underwent special training to learn how to operate the da Vinci® Surgical System. It provides surgeons with enhanced visualization (including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view of the surgical site), increased precision and better control than traditional laparoscopic surgery. “The robotic arms actually flex just like human hands, providing greater control,” explains Dr. Weiss. “Sitting at the console I control the system, which translates my hand movements into precise movements of the tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.” He is quick to point out that although this is often referred to as robotic surgery, it is not automated. The surgeon controls every aspect of the surgery. According to Dr. Weiss, “I am still making every single movement and every single cut. da Vinci® is simply a tool.” Another tool he is using to better care for his patients is the HALO Breast Pap Test. Dr. Weiss was the first physician in our area to introduce this revolutionary risk assess-
40
ment test for breast cancer. HALO can identify a woman’s risk of breast cancer up to eight years before it could be detected on a mammogram. “The HALO test does not replace the mammogram or breast exam, but rather provides more information to identify high risk women,” explains Dr. Weiss, noting that HALO does not diagnose breast cancer, it is simply a screening tool. “HALO is looking for abnormal Dr. Simon Weiss cells years before they might turn into a cancerous growth. By identifying which women are at greater risk, we can monitor their breast health more closely.” He recommends that all women over the age or 25 have a HALO Breast Pap Test as part of their annual gynecological check-up, just like a cervical pap smear. The test is quick, easy and pain-free. Using a device similar to a massaging breast pump, HALO collects nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) for laboratory analysis. Because breast cancer typically originates in the ductal system of the breast, by examining the NAF doctors can identify abnormal cells and determine if a woman is at elevated risk for breast cancer. HALO and da Vinci® are just two examples of the cutting edge medicine Dr. Weiss practices. He also offers patients in-office, non-surgical treatments for sterilization and incontinence. “Many women are plagued by stress urinary incontinence, but you don’t need to live with it,” states Dr. Weiss. “Renessa allows me to treat patients, here in the office, with a simple 30-minute, non-surgical procedure with little or no down-time.” His practice is focused on providing services to treat most major gynecological problems without the need of major surgery or lengthy hospital stay. “This is the future of medicine,” he boasts. Dr. Weiss, along with partners Dr. Helen Spalding, Dr. Jose Rivas, Dr. Marion Lacombe, and Dr. Heather Christie, provide complete gynecological and obstetric care, including infertility, high-risk pregnancy, menopause management, and more. Dr. Weiss and his partners have offices in Miramar and Hollywood. It’s Their Business Discover a New You at Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute By Stacey Bomser
B
eauty is in the eye of the beholder. For some people that may be wearing a size two; for others it’s simply the satisfaction of losing a couple of inches so they look better in their clothes. Both are possibilities at Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute. The cosmetic surgery center is known for its fabulous success with body sculpting. The SA Body Sculpture was developed by Albert Sant Antonio, MD. A licensed general surgeon, his artistic passion led him to focus his practice on cosmetic surgery. Dr. Sant Antonio has perfected a body sculpting technique which provides phenomenal results.
with Dr. Sant Antonio by changing position so the areas are more easily accessible, allowing the doctor to better sculpt the body. Because the actual sculpting is done using tiny tools, there is no need for stitches and there is little bruising. To reduce inflammation and swelling patients receive a series of post-lymphatic massages. Not only do these treatments promote healing, but patients find them extremely relaxing. If patients follow the recommended protocol, they should see improvement within a few weeks of surgery. However, it will take three to four months to see the final results. In addition to the highly successful SA Body Sculpture, Alyne Medical Rejuvenation
Laser therapy is highly effective for facial rejuvenation.
Patients see phenomenal results with Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute’s SA Body Sculpture.
“Using delicate instruments, I am able artistically sculpt the body into a new shape by removing precise amounts of fat at a time,” explains Dr. Sant Antonio. “This advanced technique permanently removes excess fat deposits in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.” This procedure is ideal for patients who have been struggling with isolated areas. For instance, the doctor is able to pinpoint that post-baby belly area where no amount of crunches seemed to work. And many men have undergone the procedure to remove stubborn love handles. While Dr. Sant Antonio has achieved wonderful success using SA Body Sculpture to target specific areas, he has also discovered that is works remarkably well on patients with larger weight and size concerns. In fact, Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute is known for treating the atypical patient – overweight individuals. Often times, people who are overweight or obese are considered high-risk and told they need to lose weight before the doctor will treat them. Unfortunately, for many of these people, diet and exercise doesn’t work and that is why they are turning to cosmetic surgery. They are not looking to wear a size two, they just want to lose inches and look better. “We treat many patients other physicians would dismiss,” explains Dr. Sant Antonio, noting that all patients must pass medical clearance before any procedure. “We have found that by helping them lose weight and inches surgically, it changes their life. They not only look better, but they have better self-esteem.” For many of these patients, the loss is actually the catalyst to getting healthier. To aid in this effort, after the procedure patients are educated on healthy eating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this includes exercise. With SA Body Sculpture, patients are able to resume normal activities, including exercise, much sooner than with traditional liposuction. There is minimal downtime because it is performed under local anesthesia. Besides the obvious increased patient safety, another significant benefit to local anesthesia is that the patient can cooperate

Institute is known for its facial rejuvenation procedures. Licensed Physician Assistants Lynne Ulevich and Graciela Chevez both have extensive experience in medical aesthetics. They offer a complete menu of injectables and dermal fillers, as well as perform various treatments using the exclusive Sciton Joule Laser to tighten skin, improve skin tone and pigmentation, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and improve acne scarring. “We have had great success with acne patients, both in terms of treating acne scarring as well as getting acne under control,” shares Lynne Ulevich, PA-C. “We have achieved great outcomes in patients who have been frustrated with traditional acne treatment methods. Specific laser protocols control the acne breakouts more quickly. This, in conjunction with prescription medication, achieves a faster result in reducing breakouts and flare-ups.” They attribute their success to advanced training. “We take continuing education courses and study the latest protocols to offer our patients the best treatments possible,” says Graciela Chevez, PA-C. “We are always working to fine tune our technique.” They are also looking for new services to provide patients. Beginning in March, Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute will offer Blink tattoo removal. It will be one of the only practices in South Florida trained to use this advanced laser which can safely treat all colors of tattoo ink. It’s obvious that Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute is committed to providing patients the best products and services in the industry. The practice is equally dedicated to providing patients with the best experience possible. The entire staff strives to provide professional and personalized service. Spanish-speaking patients take comfort in the fact that both Dr. Sant Antonio and Graciela are bilingual, as are many staff members. The practice also offers evening and Saturday appointments for added convenience. Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive in Weston, behind the Marriott Residence Inn. To schedule your complimentary consultation call (954) 446-6464. Health & Wellness Effective and Convenient Laser Hair Removal By Angélica Briceño, Medical Assistant
T
he appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness and convenience. Laser hair removal can easily treat large areas of hair growth in a relatively short amount of time. For example, an entire body can be treated in two to three hours and a full back can be treated in as little as one hour. Through laser hair removal patients can enjoy an effective treatment and receive optimum results. A permanent reduction in unwanted hair and soft, smooth skin are a few of the results patients will experience. Hair in unwanted places or excessive hair has been a long-standing problem for both women and men. Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, tweezing or waxing have proven to be inconvenient, temporary, and often result in painful ingrown hairs. And although home selftreatments may be cheaper they do not offer the permanent results like laser does. When you consider that laser hair removal can be finished in a few sessions, versus being performed daily over a persons’ lifetime, laser hair removal is much more effective. Laser hair removal provides excellent results with less risk of skin damage or irritation. The use of depilatories or hair removal creams, actually melt away skin cells, and can cause mild to severe skin irritation. Using strong chemical products on your skin can upset the delicate pH balance of the skin and cause rashes. And, while hair removal creams can provide good results, they are also only temporary. Electrolysis is another alternative to laser hair removal. Electrolysis hair removal applies an electric current to a fine needle inserted into a single hair follicle root. The electrical current heats the root of the hair to an extreme temperature, in effect burning it, and inhibiting it from producing any new hair. While electrolysis hair removal does offer permanent results, it is a slow, painful process that most often requires multiple sessions to completely destroy the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis which destroys each hair root individually laser hair removal treatments are much more effective as it destroys many hair follicles at once. Because of this, areas can be treated with a laser in a fraction of the time needed for electrolysis. Smaller areas can be treated in 15 minutes allowing patients to return to work or normal activities immediately. Patients can now experience a convenient and effective permanent reduction of hair by a laser hair removal treatment and have satisfying results.
