community news 13th Annual Art Festival in the Pines Returns By Debby Teich

ore than 15,000 people are expected to attend the 13th Annual Art Festival in the Pines to enjoy some great art, entertainment, crafts and food. The free event is presented by the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Department. “In this time of budget cuts, we want to make sure that art still remains an active part of our community,” said Advisory Board Chair Rose Colombo. “Art is good for the soul and spirit.” The festival will be held on March 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers moved the event from the Academic Village to the Pembroke Pines City Center, just west of City Hall, at 10300 Pines Boulevard. The new location offers additional space for artists, as well as more accessible parking. The festival started 13 years ago when a small group of artists set up tables around the lake at the City Hall building. It has continued to grow and over 100 artists will be featured in this year’s juried show. They will be displaying and selling a variety of items at all price levels, including acrylic and oil, sculpture, photography, glass, water color and pastels, wood, mixed media, jewelry, plants, fine crafts and more. Artists from the Schott Communities (providers of services to deaf or disabled

adults and young adults) will be returning this year to display their art work. All of the artists will have an opportunity to win $500 for Best in Show, as well as $350 in seven different categories. This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Magic of the Islands.” “We want people to leave their worries behind and enjoy a fun-filled, tropical weekend at the festival,” said Colombo. “There will be something for everyone.” Throughout the weekend, there will be a variety of local entertainment, with performances by senior citizens, dance troupes, student groups, belly dancers, and more. There will be a children’s tent with free art activities. There will also be plenty of food and drink. Joyce Brunsfield has attended the festival for the past five years. She has purchased several pieces of art and jewelry. “I look forward to the festival all year long,” said Brunsfield. “The artwork is always terrific and the food is delicious. Katz Theatre - River of Grass ArksPark, 17195 Sheridan St. On March 16, Chris MacDonald will be presenting a Tribute to the King, Elvis Presley. MacDonald’s “Memories of Elvis” show has been featured at Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis. There will be a Wine and Cheese Reception and Silent Auction from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The show begins at 7 p.m. The audience will have an opportunity to enjoy some great entertainment, and all for a good cause. The event is a fundraiser for the Davie/Cooper Rotary City and Prestige Club. Proceeds from the ticket fee will benefit the Rotary Club’s Black Stallion Literacy Project. The national project introduces children to the joy of reading through the magic of horses and the popular Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. The goal of the project is to spark imagination and the desire to read in first grade students. After local elementary school students had an opportunity to visit with horses, they read Farley’s Little Black, A Pony and wrote stories chronicling their experiences. More than 400 children also participated in a Black Stallion event at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. They read to the horses and learned how to properly care for them. The Davie/Cooper City Rotary Club has supported the Black Stallion Literacy Project for the past eight years. The Rotary is committed to several projects which educate young people locally, nationally and internationally. “As Rotarians we believe in actively helping our community,” said Shawn Meiman, President of the Davie/Cooper City Rotary. “Eliminating illiteracy is a goal of the Black Stallion reading literacy program. Education is empowering and reading is essential to that goal.” Rotary also supports the Polio Plus program on

MCA Broward presented a Roof Raising Event on February 3 in the City of Pembroke Pines. I want to let you know about the public/private partnership that we have developed with the YMCA. This particular project has far surpassed any that the YMCA has done. We in the City of Pembroke Pines are always happy to be innovative, and to be leaders in these great projects. This project creates hundreds of jobs initially in construction but then goes on to create permanent jobs to sustain the project. I will keep you updated on how this project develops. I hosted a town hall meeting on January 26, and greatly appreciated the number of people who turned out to meet with me and other city officials to view the City of Pembroke Pines’ 5-year visioning plan. Residents also had a chance to ask questions and voice their opinions about various issues that we plan to address going forward. We asked the residents several questions: what features of the city do you want to keep the same? What features of the city do you want to change? What new features would you like to see developed? The answers were interesting and gave me a good indication of how our residents feel about their city. In answer to the question about what features of the city to keep the same, the responses included: beautiful parks, cleanliness, nice shopping centers, green grass, trees, landscaping, SW Focal Senior Center, the police department, charter schools, safety, Studio 18 Art Gallery, the fire department, shuttle bus, good hospitals and bus service. In answer to the question about what features of the city you would want to change, I was pleased with the audience participation, and responses with constructive comments and suggestions that can improve the city. These included such suggestions as a trauma center, better maintenance at the senior facilities, more pedestrian-friendly roadways, movie theaters, generators in gas stations, more activities for young adults, improved traffic management, and more police patrols. Time constraints at the town hall meeting did not allow us to fully receive and explore answers and comments regarding the question of what new features residents would like to see developed in our city, However, I would welcome any continued input from all residents on this question: What new features would residents like to see developed in our city? n my letter last month, I conveyed to you how cities are faced with the task of “doing more with less and less,” that we are all aware of the economic challenges, and that these challenges will be with us for awhile. While it may have started out grim, I wanted to share with you all how Miramar could not and would not use that as an excuse to ever stop trying to improve our residents’ quality of life. It is for this reason that Miramar embraced sustainable development. This type of development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The purpose of this letter is to continue to provide more examples of how Miramar is advocating sustainable development. As stated last month, Miramar has employed a 360 degree approach: an all-embracing, top-down, bottom-up grassroots path towards sustainability. The effort stems from the environmental initiatives that ranked high during the last two visioning sessions held in 1997 and 2009. A few examples of implementation of sustainable projects include: ▸▸ Miramar has entered into a new solid waste agreement with Waste Pro. The new five year contract will lower residents’ monthly fees from $27.11 to $18.75, resulting in a cumulative savings of $3.5 million per year. The new service will provide brand new 96 gallon trash cans for each residence as well as a future implementation of a more aggressive recycling program that would allow residents to mix recyclables with regular trash. ▸▸ Miramar implemented a Reclaimed Water Distribution System Expansion due to the rapid growth of the City. The system was developed in order to provide reclaimed water to new customers as an alternative water supply to offset increased demands of potable water. Its benefits include: ▸▸ Forgoing major growth-related water system Capital Improvement Project expenditures; ▸▸ Maintaining low operating costs and competitive utility rates; ▸▸ Incorporating approximately 1,850 new households from three residential sub-divisions into Miramar’s reuse water distribution system; ▸▸ Incorporating two commercial sub-divisions in western Miramar into Miramar’s reuse water distribution system; ▸▸ Promoting the City’s Green Initiative; ▸▸ Providing future revenue enhancement opportunities; ▸▸ Reuse not affected by mandatory water shortage orders; ▸▸ Reducing power and maintenance expenses for irrigation pumps; ▸▸ Reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides; ▸▸ No staining or rusting on exposed exterior surfaces My fellow commissioners and I know that the stakes couldn’t be higher. We believe that government can have a real impact on everyone’s quality of life. We know that by improving the quality of life you improve not just the economy but the social and political prospects for everyone. And if we care about the dream of a better life for our children, we need to pay attention and take action. In the end, each of us, in our own way, fights for a better tomorrow. ast year, the City of Pembroke Pines celebrated its 50th birthday by extending the traditional Pines Day event into an 11-day fair. The event was such a success that the City plans to do it again. From March 31 to April 10, the City of Pembroke Pines will celebrate its 51st birthday, featuring a carnival, concerts, entertainment and a variety of community based activities and events. The Pembroke Pines Fair will be held at the Pembroke Pines City Center, located on Pines Boulevard, just west of Palm Avenue. “It is a great family event with something for everyone,” said Director of Recreation Carol Campisi. Proceeds will benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. The event kicks off with the Second Annual “Taste of Pines” on March 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy samples of delicious cuisine from restaurants throughout Pembroke Pines, complimented by drinks from the wine and beer tasting portion of the event. The Debbie Orta Jazz Quartet will provide the evening’s entertainment. Only 500 tickets will be sold for the “Taste of the Pines” event. From April 1 to 10, the City Center will be the site of a full carnival with Midway rides, food and attractions. A stage will be set up for performances by local school groups and organizations, as well as musical performances that will include classic rock, reggae, Latin Salsa, jazz, country and more. There will be something special happening every day. On April 1, charter schools will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. and Power 96 will host a teen DJ party from 9 to 11 p.m. On April 2, The City will celebrate Pines Day with a cake cutting at 4 p.m., local school performances from noon to 4 p.m., and bands from 6 to 9:30 p.m. On April 3, local schools and dance troupes will perform from 1

to 4 p.m. and a Latin pop band will play from 4:30 to 6 p.m. On April 8, Mayor Frank Ortis will host his annual golf tournament at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club in the morning. In the evening, the Pembroke Pines police and fire departments will display their vehicles and country and rock bands will play. On April 9, the Landscape Advisory Board will sponsor an Arbor Day Expo from noon to 6 p.m., Little Miss Sweetheart will be crowned at 4 p.m., and two bands will play from 6 to 9:30 p.m. On April 10, there will be local performances from 1 to 4 p.m. and bands from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Randy Dunkin attended the fair last year and plans to bring his three children again this year. “We had so much fun last year,” said Dunkin. “The kids loved the rides and the entertainment was great. ome of the most common injuries in a car accident or slip and fall case involve a victim’s head. A blow to the head can seem minor at first. It might not cause any immediate pain, bruising, or bleeding. However, hours later it can turn serious, even fatal. It is very common for someone who has had a fall or been in a car accident to appear perfectly fine immediately after the impact but then suddenly and rapidly deteriorate. After the “accident” – which doesn’t have to be serious at all – a person can seem perfectly normal, but there may be a silent skull fracture or a broken blood vessel bleeding in the brain or between the skull and the brain. As blood leaks from a ruptured artery and puts pressure on the brain, the classic symptoms of a traumatic brain injury begin to appear: nausea, severe headache, glassy eyes, or sudden sleepiness. Symptoms can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours – or even several days – to begin. For anyone involved in a car accident, sports injury, or just a slip in the driveway, recognizing the signs of brain injury early is critical. Preventing permanent brain damage depends on getting to a hospital within the first few hours because damage caused by brain swelling often is irreversible. Trauma teams are taught that when people have been in a car crash and someone involved in the accident dies, they should assume that everyone else has serious injuries – even if they look good and say they feel fine. If you are involved in a car accident or slip and fall and suffer head trauma please remember these rules: ▸▸ Go to the emergency room. Even if you feel like everything is fine, it is mandatory for someone in an emergency setting to evaluate your medical condition. ▸▸ Mandate that a CT scan of your head is performed. Physical examination alone may not be sufficient to conclusively diagnose a brain injury or internal complications. ▸▸ If you experience the “classic signs and symptoms” of a head trauma, advise family members of what you are feeling so that they can advocate for you with your treating health care providers. An emergency room that is busy with lots of patients may be eager to send you home despite your medical history. Family members can help you demand admission to the hospital for further necessary evaluation.

There are also plenty of picks for non fish eaters such as the Tempura Roll with sweet potato, carrot, green bean and squash. Once you’ve had your fill of sushi, grab a clean plate, or two, and head for the buffet. There are about 25 items on the hot bar including POC’s famed “Grand Marnier Shrimp.” Other Asian-inspired items include sesame chicken, shrimp tempura, steak wrapped asparagus, fried rice and much more. On weekend nights, the buffet features gourmet dishes such as Filet Carpaccio and Tempura Crusted Grouper. The cold bar offers fresh seafood selections including Alaskan Snow Crab legs, cocktail shrimp, oysters and mussels, as well as a small salad bar. On top of all the wonderful buffet items, POC offers cooked-to-order Japanese-style hibachi. Choices include NY strip steak, chicken breast, shrimp or scallops. Regardless of what you pick, you know it’s fresh. “We are constantly changing out the food and sushi on the buffet. Nothing sits for long,” says Will. “But our food is so good the serving dish plate is usually empty long before then.” Be sure to save room for dessert. n the early 1950’s through the 1980’s, a group of twenty-six African-American artists known as the “Florida Highwaymen” used vivid and bright colors to capture Florida’s natural beauty before much

of it was developed. They used their own individual techniques to paint wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. The City of Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery’s “Nostalgic Florida” exhibit features original paintings by eight of these art-

ists, including Curtis Arnett, Mary Ann Carroll, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, R. L. Lewis, R. A. McClendon Sr., Willie Reagan and Carnell Smith. The paintings will be on display through March 28. The Highwaymen are all very talented, but they were unknown at the time. They knew that they would have to find a way to be different if they wanted to sell their artwork. The self-taught painters formed a group and started painting from their garages and backyards on inexpensive wood. On weekends, they would load their paintings into the trunks of their cars and travel on I-95 and AIA to sell them to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals for around $25 a piece. Many considered this to be the beginning of Florida’s contemporary art tradition. The Highwaymen officially disbanded in the 1980’s. The 200,000 plus original paintings have become popular among collectors and art enthusiasts, often selling for as much as $5,000. In 2004, the Highwaymen were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Due to a recent increase in demand for their work, several of the original highwaymen have started painting again. The Glass Gallery exhibit features several original paintings from each of the eight artists. There also signed and numbered giclées, which sell for less. Legally Speaking When Is the Right Time for Homeowners to File for Bankruptcy Protection? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days.

Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. taying motivated to continue on an exercise program is not an easy thing to do. The first few months of any exercise program can feel like time is standing still. There are aches and pains from using muscles that have been in hibernation. Those constant aching reminders seem to plague every waking moment of the day. Then there is finding the time to plan this seemingly masochistic torture. After a few long weeks, the activity begins to feel less and less worthwhile. In a nut shell, the first few months of an exercise program yields a lot of pain for little benefit so staying motivated can prove to be a feat on its own. Most people end up discontinuing the exercise program. As a physician and an avid exerciser, this is very disappointing to me. I really want to see people succeed so they can feel better as they benefit from the regular activity. There has to be more to exercise than just weight loss as a goal, because weight loss eventually plateaus. If that happens before the aches and pains go away, most will quit. One of the most effective ways to overcome this is to set small goals that are tied to big achievements. Simply adding exercise to your already busy schedule and viewing it as another task or chore is not likely to result in a lasting behavior. If you tie the exercise as means to a goal, it takes on a whole new paradigm. Using the exercise as a tool that allows you to achieve some of the goals you set will help you stay motivated while keeping your body lean and fit. Here are a few suggestions that seem to work quite well for most people ready to embark on an exercise program. ▸▸ Set a goal to complete an organized sporting or fitness event like a run or a walk that supports a good cause. You’re much more likely to stick to your goals if they tied to achievements that benefit more than just yourself. ▸▸ Motivate others to join you for some friendly competition. Competition is a healthy way to push you to work harder. ▸▸ Sign up for a fitness message board. They are full of inspiration from men and women who have accomplished similar goals. There is a lot to be learned from other people’s achievements and failures. Staying motivated is not generally an inherent behavior. reventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” ▸▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. hat could be more devastating than the diagnosis of Breast Cancer - the aftermath? The thought of cancer is one thing. However, it is the surgery, recovery, surgical outcome, treatment, and side effects that are the real struggle on the way to cure or long term management. You are, overnight, a different person. It provides a minimally invasive option for complex gynecological surgical cases such as hysterectomies, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, or removal of scar tissue in the pelvis. “da Vinci® allows me to do certain procedures laparoscopically that before had to be done with an open incision,” explains Dr. Simon Weiss, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. “This significantly improves patient recovery.” Dr. Weiss has found great success using da Vinci® to perform hysterectomies. Not only does the state-of-the-art technology offer him, as a surgeon, greater precision and control, but patients have significantly less pain and a faster recovery. “Traditionally, after a radical hysterectomy a patient spent four days in the hospital, now they stay just one night,” says Dr. Weiss. “It used to take about a month to recover, now it’s generally less than two weeks. Some patients are even back to work in four days.” This is because da Vinci® allows doctors to perform complex procedures and major surgery through the smallest incisions. It was originally introduced for cardiovascular surgery, but now is used primarily by urologists to perform prostatectomies. Dr. Weiss is one of a few gynecologists using da Vinci® to perform benign (not cancer) surgery. One of the reasons there are a limited number of surgeons using this device is because the training is extensive. Dr. Weiss underwent special training to learn how to operate the da Vinci® Surgical System. It provides surgeons with enhanced visualization (including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view of the surgical site), increased precision and better control than traditional laparoscopic surgery. “The robotic arms actually flex just like human hands, providing greater control,” explains Dr. Weiss. “Sitting at the console I control the system, which translates my hand movements into precise movements of the tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.” He is quick to point out that although this is often referred to as robotic surgery, it is not automated. The surgeon controls every aspect of the surgery. According to Dr. Weiss, “I am still making every single movement and every single cut. da Vinci® is simply a tool.” Another tool he is using to better care for his patients is the HALO Breast Pap Test. Dr. Weiss was the first physician in our area to introduce this revolutionary risk assess-

ment test for breast cancer. HALO can identify a woman’s risk of breast cancer up to eight years before it could be detected on a mammogram. “The HALO test does not replace the mammogram or breast exam, but rather provides more information to identify high risk women,” explains Dr. Weiss, noting that HALO does not diagnose breast cancer, it is simply a screening tool. “HALO is looking for abnormal Dr. Simon Weiss cells years before they might turn into a cancerous growth. By identifying which women are at greater risk, we can monitor their breast health more closely.” He recommends that all women over the age or 25 have a HALO Breast Pap Test as part of their annual gynecological check-up, just like a cervical pap smear. The test is quick, easy and pain-free. Using a device similar to a massaging breast pump, HALO collects nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) for laboratory analysis. Because breast cancer typically originates in the ductal system of the breast, by examining the NAF doctors can identify abnormal cells and determine if a woman is at elevated risk for breast cancer. HALO and da Vinci® are just two examples of the cutting edge medicine Dr. Weiss practices. He also offers patients in-office, non-surgical treatments for sterilization and incontinence. “Many women are plagued by stress urinary incontinence, but you don’t need to live with it,” states Dr. Weiss. “Renessa allows me to treat patients, here in the office, with a simple 30-minute, non-surgical procedure with little or no down-time.” His practice is focused on providing services to treat most major gynecological problems without the need of major surgery or lengthy hospital stay. “This is the future of medicine,” he boasts. Health & Wellness Effective and Convenient Laser Hair Removal By Angélica Briceño, Medical Assistant

he appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness and convenience. Laser hair removal can easily treat large areas of hair growth in a relatively short amount of time. For example, an entire body can be treated in two to three hours and a full back can be treated in as little as one hour. Through laser hair removal patients can enjoy an effective treatment and receive optimum results. A permanent reduction in unwanted hair and soft, smooth skin are a few of the results patients will experience. Hair in unwanted places or excessive hair has been a long-standing problem for both women and men. Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, tweezing or waxing have proven to be inconvenient, temporary, and often result in painful ingrown hairs. And although home selftreatments may be cheaper they do not offer the permanent results like laser does. When you consider that laser hair removal can be finished in a few sessions, versus being performed daily over a persons’ lifetime, laser hair removal is much more effective. Laser hair removal provides excellent results with less risk of skin damage or irritation. The use of depilatories or hair removal creams, actually melt away skin cells, and can cause mild to severe skin irritation. Using strong chemical products on your skin can upset the delicate pH balance of the skin and cause rashes. And, while hair removal creams can provide good results, they are also only temporary. Electrolysis is another alternative to laser hair removal. Electrolysis hair removal applies an electric current to a fine needle inserted into a single hair follicle root. The electrical current heats the root of the hair to an extreme temperature, in effect burning it, and inhibiting it from producing any new hair. While electrolysis hair removal does offer permanent results, it is a slow, painful process that most often requires multiple sessions to completely destroy the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis which destroys each hair root individually laser hair removal treatments are much more effective as it destroys many hair follicles at once. Because of this, areas can be treated with a laser in a fraction of the time needed for electrolysis. Smaller areas can be treated in 15 minutes allowing patients to return to work or normal activities immediately. Patients can now experience a convenient and effective permanent reduction of hair by a laser hair removal treatment and have satisfying results.
