very year we welcome spring as a sign of renewal and progress. After this winter’s prolonged cold-weather period we can finally enjoy the pleasant temperatures and sunshine that South Florida is famous for. While we watch the news reports of the last snow and ice storms ravaging our northern states, we welcome our visitors from those colder climates. And we realize just HOW LUCKY WE ARE ! Of course not everything is perfect with the economy still in dire need of rebuilding and with the occasional hurricane visiting us, but in the overall scheme of things FLORIDA is the place we choose to live. And rightly so. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey & Co. in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day ? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment during the night ? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the intracoastal dining scene - all on the same boat trip ? Only in Florida ! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some FUN. Sincerely,
SvenSvenBudzisch Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Green Thumb Gardening Everything’s Blooming in the Garden Center By Jim Dezell
T
here’s no better time to visit your local garden center than early March, the beginning of spring in South Florida. Deep blue skies contrast with healthy green foliage and a wide array of colorful flowers. With the cold fronts definitely behind us and the summer heat still many months ahead, it’s also the most comfortable time of the year to work in the garden. You will also have ample time to enjoy the most colorful flowering plants the annuals! There are eight great annuals that will provide nonstop bloom through June. They are petunias, zinnia, alyssum, marigolds, lobelia, snapdragons, pansies and violas. They can be either planted directly into the ground or used in a container garden (try 5 - 7 different varieties of differing color, leaf texture and height). And for 99 cents each, you get a huge bang for your buck! Here’s all you need to know to be successful with them: ▸▸ Soil - If planting into the ground, you should blend at least a 50/50 mix of Miracle Gro garden soil with your existing soil. For container gardens, use Fafard potting soil. ▸▸ Food - Osmocote time release granules should be applied immediately upon
planting and 2 months later. Sun - These annuals thrive in full sun, but will still flower nicely in partial shade. Avoid deep shade. ▸▸ Watering - Water daily for ten days to get the roots established and then 2-3 times per week thereafter, depending on heat and wind. ▸▸ Pruning - It’s advantageous to lightly prune some annuals during their 3rd month to maintain fullness and promote continued flowering. Marigolds should be dead headed. I encourage you to visit with Jodi, our annual buyer and very friendly associate, to learn more about these flowers. The nursery also hosts weekend seminars at 10 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday on a wide variety of topics to assist you in becoming the best gardener on your block! Now, let’s celebrate spring in the tropics! ▸▸

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
I
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. community news Southwest Ranches Receives Tree City USA Growth Award By Debby Teich
E
very day, the 8,500 residents of Southwest Ranches have an opportunity to enjoy the town’s beautiful parks and rural landscape. In fact, Southwest Ranches has almost as many trees as residents. According to Parks and Recreation Coordinator and Town Arborist December Lauretano-Haines, the Town has planted and maintains over 6,300 trees on rights of way and public property. That does not even account for the trees that are planted on private property or grow on their own. Southwest Ranches recently achieved national recognition by earning the 2010 Tree City USA Growth Award for its Community Forestry Program from the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. “Trees make a world of difference in our communities,” said National Arbor Day Foundation President John Rosenow. “An effective community forestry program is an ongoing process of renewal and improvement… The Tree City USA award is an excellent indication that there is a solid foundation for that process of improvement.” This is the fourth year that Southwest Ranches has earned the title of Tree City USA, by meeting all of the required criteria for environmental improvement. The Town received the award in the area of Planning and Management by developing open space with major tree planting; conducting a baseline inventory and analysis of all street and/or park trees in the Town; and protecting and enhancing Wildlife Habitat. For a Municipality to earn the distinguished Tree City USA Growth Award, it must have spent at least as much on its community forestry program in the current year as it did in the past year; complete enough activities to earn 10 points and it must be a recognized Tree City USA community for at least two consecutive years. The Town of Southwest Ranches first earned its Tree City USA designation in 2007 and has maintained it since. In order to keep its status, it has a citizen tree board to develop and improve tree management practices, observes Arbor Day through a

formal proclamation and a public event, has a community tree ordinance, and budgets a minimum of two dollars per capita for community tree care. With $20,000 allocated for tree care and maintenance, the Town’s 2010/11 fiscal budget actually exceeds the required minimum. The Town draws additional funds from a Tree Preservation Trust fund, as well as various grants. The money has been used to plant hundreds of trees each year, to develop tree canopies with assistance from neighboring Davie and more. “Trees are beneficial in so many ways,” said December Lauretano-Haines. “They reduce heat, provide shade, increase property values, provide a habitat for wildlife, help clean the air and so much more. They also beautify the community.” For information, contact Town Arborist December Lauretano-Haines at 954-343-7452.

community news Davie Principal to Lead Community Discussion on School Pressures By Debby Teich
M
ost students today lead pressure-packed lives filled with activities, leaving little room for down-time or family time. They are expected to do well at everything: academics, sports, the arts and community-service. Mother turned filmmaker Vicki Abeles was inspired to produce Race to Nowhere out of concern for her own children. The documentary has become the impetus for a grassroots effort to raise awareness and change the current philosophy of the educational system. Dr. Wendy Weiner, Founder and Principal of Davie’s Conservatory Prep Senior High School, recently hosted a community screening of the film, as well as follow-up discussions to get people talking. “The first step is for people to realize this is important,” said Weiner. The next community dialogue will take place on March 6. Race to Nowhere features the heartbreaking stories of young people in all types of communities who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students are not developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what is best for their kids. It points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Several members of the audience were brought to tears during the January screening in Davie as the film examined what they were thinking, but afraid to say. They wanted to know what they could do to help their children become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. “Many parents do not believe in the system, but they are not sure how to change it,” said Weiner. “We want them to know that they do have a say in their children’s education and that there are other ways to promote success.” In response, Weiner scheduled community meetings to continue the film’s dialogue. A mix of
university professors, k-12 teachers and concerned parents showed up for the first meeting held on Feb. 6. The next meeting, on March 6, will focus on how involved parents should really be with homework. Weiner is well aware of the pressures kids have to endure. “In preschool, children believe they are good dancers, singers and artists,” said Weiner. “By third grade, they have lost their passion, as well as their Community discussions are examining ways to address the pressure-packed lives of today’s students ability to think outside of the box. They as portrayed in Vicki Abeles’ Race to Nowhere. have been home memorizing information at the expense of trying to determine if they like art, cooking, music or some other community activity. By the time they are 14, their stress and anxiety levels are high and they are afraid to open themselves up. Many graduate with straight A’s, but have never learned how to solve problems and do not function well at their jobs. They are not learning the necessary life skills to help them become productive members of society. We have a lot of work to do.” Weiner considered all of this when she developed Conservatory Prep’s curriculum, which embraces each student’s individualism and integrates theatre, art and music to propel their intellectual curiosity. The next community discussion will be held on March 6, at 11 a.m., at David Posnack JCC, 5850 Pine Island Rd., in Davie. community news Jim Richardson 5K Run/Walk Celebrates 30 Years By Debby Teich
O
n March 13, more than 400 runners and walkers are expected to participate in Cooper City’s Jim Richardson 5K Run and Fitness Walks, which start and end at the Cooper City Sports Complex, 10500 Stirling Rd. This is the 30th year of the community event, making it one of the oldest run/ walks in South Florida. It includes a 5K and 2-mile Fitness Walk within the Embassy Lakes community, as well as a one-mile Run/Walk and complimentary Toddler Trot in the Sports Complex. “The annual event is part of the City’s recreational program,” said Director of Recreations Ken Richardson. “Few races have lasted as long as this one.” The race will be timed using the Chrono Track Timing System. Awards will be presented to the Top Male and Female Finishers, Top Male and Female Masters, Top Three Finishers in each age/gender division of the 5K, and for the Top Male and Female Cooper City Finishers. Participants will receive a special long sleeve t-shirt this year marking the 30th anniversary. The event was named for longtime Cooper City resident Jim Richardson in 1996. Jim was dedicated to the city’s running community as a coach, mentor and community volunteer for many years. Although Jim and his wife Ellen currently reside in central Florida, they return each year to support the race. Mike Duffy has participated in the event for the past few years. “It is fun to part of something that has been going on for so many years,” said Duffy. “It is a great way to visit with friends and neighbors.” Lori Peterson plans to attend the event with her husband and three children. She recently moved to Embassy Lakes and is looking forward to meeting some of her neighbors. “I think it is great that Cooper City has so many community events,” said Peterson. “It is one of the things that attracted me to the area.”
Last year, more than 400 runners and walkers participated in Cooper City’s Jim Richardson 5K Run and Fitness Walks. This year’s event will be held on March 13.

Fitness Forum How to Navigate Through Menopause By Ellen Latham
A
bout 35-40 million women in the United States are past menopause or currently going through it with baby boomers adding another 20 million in the next few years. The average life expectancy of women has increased; however, the average age of menopause onset has remained the same for centuries. The majority of these women in the United States (more than two-thirds) experience commom symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, tension, anxiety, irritability and moodiness. Numerous studies have found that physically active women self-report fewer menopausal symptoms. Kemmler et al. (2005) found that insomnia; migraines and mood changes are modestly reduced in early postmenopausal women. Vigorous exercise training elevates beta-endorphin levels, which is why the Ultimate Workout at Ellen’s Ultimate Workout is fantastic for reducing vasomotor symptoms.
Let’s break it down:
Why do you need cardio and what kind do you need? Body composition is a concern during this period. You will often hear women say, “Ever since I hit menopause my body has changed shape, yet I am not doing anything different.” The aerobic program you should be on is one that focuses on you maintaining a healthy body composition (that is body fat ratio to muscle) and abdominal fat distribution. Here is a simple cardio routine…… start building a base speed either walking or jogging for about 30 to 45 minutes. Within this 30 to 45 minutes, make sure that 12 to 20 minutes is at a more intense pace, making you feel uncomfortable. A sample program might be walk for 8 minutes then jog for 2 minutes, then walk for 6
minutes and jog for 3 minutes and then walk for 4 minutes and jog for 4 minutes and repeat going a little faster in both the walk and jog. Why do you need muscle work and what kind do you need? Women who included strength based exercises had positive outcomes which included improvements in strength, body composition and bone density. Improvements of approximately 30% in the lower body and 25% in the upper body occurred in postmenopausal women following a six month resistance training protocol consisting of 8 repetitions of 12 exercises at 80% of one repetition maximum (Bemben et al. 2000). Ladies you have to pick up heavier weights then 5 and 7 lb. weights. They will not accomplish what you want. So, go grab a 10 and 12 lb. set of dumbbells today. In regard to bone density improvements, one must choose exercises that strengthen the small and large muscle groups of the spine and hip which are the most common sites for fractures. Pilates on the machines has helped many of my clients improve in the area of strength. Although there is much more to learn in the field of exercise research and menopause, what we do know supports physical activity as a means to help manage menopausal consequences. Is Breast Augmentation right for you?

Plant now for a good start on the season.
By Dr. Charles Messa
L
ast year almost 400,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the country, making it one of the most requested procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. Why is the decision to have breast surgery so critical for women? I believe that although there are multiple other cosmetic procedures that women do to improve their appearance and looks, breast surgery is the only one that combines their outward appearance and is intimately connected to how they feel about their femininity. Women may choose to undergo breast enlargement surgery for various reasons. These personal reasons may center around breasts that are perceived to be underdeveloped, or because of differences in the sizes of the breasts, or from changes after pregnancy or breast feeding. Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging or childbirth, a woman’s breast volume and shape may change. Breast enhancement using breast implants can give a woman more proportional shape and may improve self-esteem. Magazine covers, airbrushed photos of celebrities and computer-generated images often give women an unrealistic view of how they will look after breast implant surgery. That is why it is so important for you and your plastic surgeon to make decisions together based on what is possible for you and your individual goals and desires. Breast augmentation is accomplished by surgically inserting an implant, either saline filled or cohesive silicone gel, behind each breast. Usually, an incision is made under the breast, at the areola, or under the armpit. A pocket is created for the implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle between the breast and the chest wall. There are a variety of different kinds of implants that I will show and discuss with you to select the one most appropriate in your specific case, based on your individual chest measurements. Breast augmentation is performed under general or twilight anesthesia, and after recovery patients are allowed to go home on the same day. Surgery usually takes approximately one hour. It is a safe, proven procedure; but as with any operation, there are certain risks involved that you should discuss with the doctor. However, there is no evidence that breast implants will affect fertility, pregnancy or your ability to breast feed. After surgery, medication can control most pain or discomfort, which subsides in four to five days. Moderate swelling and some bruising of the breasts will disappear gradually. Most patients are able to return to work between five to seven days after surgery. The ability to wear clothes that could never be filled out before and the return of self-esteem and self-confidence that comes with a new figure, make this type of surgery one of the cosmetic procedures with the highest rate of satisfaction.

he next Mayor may have been among a group of students that recently graduated from Cooper City’s first Leadership in Government program. The four-month program is a cooperative effort of the City of Cooper City, Cooper City Senior High School and the City’s Educational Advisory Board. It is designed to provide a unique civic education through hands-on learning and experiences. “The program teaches the students about the inner workings of the City of Cooper City,” said City Manager Bruce Loucks. “It also exposes them to many of the job opportunities available in local government, from maintenance to management.” The 12 CCHS seniors who participated were selected from the school’s government classes. Each of them expressed an interest in learning about local government. The students met with elected and non-elected government officials from a variety of City departments to discuss what goes on behind the scenes, as well as all of the layers necessary to provide each service. The program started in September with an introduction to city government. The students met with the Mayor, City Manager, City Clerk, Finance Officer and others to learn about the role of city government and how it functions. The next class was

dedicated to public works. After a tour of the facility, they learned about utilities, public landscaping, the process of providing clean and safe drinking water and more. The lesson on police and fire rescue gave students a better understanding of what it takes to keep the public safe. They inspected police and fire equipment, put out a fire and watched as a body was extracted from a car using the Jaws of Life. They also learned about the Explorers program and the CERT team. During the class on Recreation and Citizen Service, the students talked about the importance of providing services and programs that cater to all ages and populations. They toured some of the facilities and met with the people who operate them. After the students completed the four field classes, they were honored at a City Commission Meeting with a special graduation ceremony. The program is offered twice a year and the next group of students has already started. Loucks says that the City may start a similar program for adults. “Everyone pays taxes, but many do not understand how they are used,” said Loucks. “Most people are surprised to learn what it takes Students in Cooper City’s Leadership in Government to run a city.” program learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Even if you feel like everything is fine, it is mandatory for someone in an emergency setting to evaluate your medical condition. ▸▸ Mandate that a CT scan of your head is performed. Physical examination alone may not be sufficient to conclusively diagnose a brain injury or internal complications. ▸▸ If you experience the “classic signs and symptoms” of a head trauma, advise family members of what you are feeling so that they can advocate for you with your treating health care providers. ome of the most common injuries in a car accident or slip and fall case involve a victim’s head. A blow to the head can seem minor at first. It might not cause any immediate pain, bruising, or bleeding. However, hours later it can turn serious, even fatal. It is very common for someone who has had a fall or been in a car accident to appear perfectly fine immediately after the impact but then suddenly and rapidly deteriorate. After the “accident” – which doesn’t have to be serious at all – a person can seem perfectly normal, but there may be a silent skull fracture or a broken blood vessel bleeding in the brain or between the skull and the brain. As blood leaks from a ruptured artery and puts pressure on the brain, the classic symptoms of a traumatic brain injury begin to appear: nausea, severe headache, glassy eyes, or sudden sleepiness. Symptoms can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours – or even several days – to begin. For anyone involved in a car accident, sports injury, or just a slip in the driveway, recognizing the signs of brain injury early is critical. Preventing permanent brain damage depends on getting to a hospital within the first few hours because damage caused by brain swelling often is irreversible. Trauma teams are taught that when people have been in a car crash and someone involved in the accident dies, they should assume that everyone else has serious injuries – even if they look good and say they feel fine. If you are involved in a car accident or slip and fall and suffer head trauma please remember these rules:

health & wellness What Your Doctor Is Not Telling You By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette, D.O.
Metabolic Syndrome
I
t is estimated that over 25% of the US population suffers from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a health problem that may include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and elevated blood sugars. The risk of premature death from a heart attack is 7 times more likely for people with metabolic syndrome than without. This statistic is startling as these people appear otherwise “healthy.” Aside from exercise and eating right, it is imperative for both men and women to check hormones levels. Has your doctor checked your testosterone levels? Higher testosterone levels have been shown to independently lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. How can you afford to be without adequate hormones?

Stop Suffering – Start Living – We Can Help! Sottopelle Therapy is Hassel Free! Adrenal Fatigue
Are you feeling not quite yourself, tired and with a general sense of un-wellness even though you may look and act relatively normal? Is your fatigue not relieved by sleep? You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Even the healthiest person may experience adrenal fatigue at one time or another in their life due to the stressors of an illness, life crises, or a continuing difficult situation. The problem is continued adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. As adrenal fatigue continues, it is common to have some of the following symptoms: inability to lose weight, tendency to get sick often, lack of energy, unclear thinking, unexplained hair loss, allergies, reduced sex drive and much more. Your body does its best to make up for under-functioning adrenals glands, but what price are you willing to pay? Many alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels in response to compensate for the decrease in adrenal hormones associated with adrenal fatigue. Have you had your adrenal function checked? The good news is that the conditions listed above can be identified with proper testing and treated with natural pharmaceuticals and supplements thus proactively promoting a wellness state and balance. To find out how you can be proactive and not reactive about your health, contact Dr. Nerette, who practices Wellness Medicine and specializes in treating all types of hormones in the body to prevent disease and promote your highest state of well-being. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is board certified in Internal Medicine and SottoPelle BioIdentical Hormone Treatment. The Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida is world-renowned in achieving excellent outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. Come join Cleveland Clinic specialists as they discuss colorectal cancer prevention, screening and treatment options. P
reventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” ▸▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit www.clevelandclinicflorida.org.

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?
Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

W
hat could be more devastating than the diagnosis of Breast Cancer - the aftermath? The thought of cancer is one thing. However, it is the surgery, recovery, surgical outcome, treatment, and side effects that are the real struggle on the way to cure or long term management. You are, overnight, a different person. Your outlook changes. Your body image is altered. Your mind and focus shifts. Your mortality is staring you in the face. You’ve heard the stories and perhaps witnessed a friend or a love one diagnosed, but until it is on your doorstep you just can’t imagine. You are motivated to fight for your life, but you don’t want anything to change. Unfortunately, that is not the reality. The reality is that everything changes. Your every decision is critical. Your life is filled with appointments, tests, consultations and then the treatment ensues. You are told things you don’t understand and names of medications you can’t pronounce. You are given calendars that seem like forever and meet a group of people you wish you never had to know. It slowly sinks in and you realize your plight. You dig deep and work hard to understand and comply, making deals with yourself and others; if I can only get through this! And then you walk through the door of the Image Recovery Center where young, caring women take you in and begin to put you back together again. They schedule your surgery. They provide the special clothing you need to get you through those tough days when drains and tubes have become a part of your anatomy. Yes you will lose a part or all of your breast, but we will help you manage. We will show you, measure you, and restore you until reconstruction, if that is your choice. Yes, you need chemotherapy. Yes your hair will fall out, but it is here that you can come and cut your hair before it falls out, choose a wig that looks like you now, and have it cut and styled in privacy or with friends and love ones. If you cry, laugh or faint, loving arms are there with big shoulders. There is someone, just like you, who has been there and done that, and to see her now, you’d never know. Maybe I’ll make it to? The environment is spa like, with good yogi music flowing or Oprah on the flat screen. It looks like shopping with clothes, wigs, lotions, hats, scarves and books. Then you spot the manicure table and the pedicure spot, a dressing room where you aren’t cramped and a soft robe to keep you comfortable during it all. There is a woman doing acupuncture and another one getting a massage- it doesn’t look like a cancer place. That’s the idea… come here to recover “you,” the person you knew before the dreaded day, to make it easier, to keep it private, to make something God awful, a little bit better. Have a cup of tea, always something to nosh, an inviting spot, with no pressure, just caring and hoping we can do a little something to make it a bit easier. It’s about being there, caring, relating and hoping to provide support at every step of the way until you find you again…. Memorial’s Image Recovery Center is located on the campus of Memorial Hospital West at 604 North Flamingo Road, Suite 159, in Pembroke Pines. Services are available to all cancer patients regardless of where care and treatment are received. For appointments or more information, call the Image Recovery Center at 954-844-6814.

Legally Speaking When Is the Right Time for Homeowners to File for Bankruptcy Protection? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days.
Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. The Arcia Law Firm has assisted hundreds of local homeowners and consumers in bankruptcy and foreclosure defense matters. If uncertain whether you qualify for bankruptcy protection or whether it is the right time to file bankruptcy, please contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com. Likewise, if you know anyone that is facing a mortgage related crisis, or is considering filing bankruptcy, please forward this article to them immediately.

Legally Speaking Clearing Up Some Common Misconceptions By Evan Baron, Esq.
P
art of the fear of divorce, besides the obvious emotional trauma that it often brings, is not really understanding the process. The problem is that many individuals have what they believe to be an understanding of what lies ahead, but they are often mistaken. Everybody seems to know somebody who has a “horror’ story of what happened to a friend or family member as a result of a divorce. Here are some misconceptions that I hope can be cleared up.

▸▸ “I am going to loose everything because the courts favor women.” The reality is that, except for very limited circumstances, all assets and liabilities are divided equally. I have never experienced a circumstance where one party received 100% of the assets. ▸▸ “If I earned the money, its mine.”Any funds earned during the marriage by either party are joint marital property. As I often explain to clients, for every dollar earned, each spouse gets fifty cents. ▸▸ “My retirement is my sole property.” Once again, if the funds in the retirement account were invested during the marriage they are considered joint marital property and will be equally divided. ▸▸ “I want sole custody of the children.” Florida no longer issues a custody designation. Neither parent will be “given custody,” since that term no longer exists in the statutes. Each parent is considered to be equal and as such decisions concerning the children should be jointly made. ▸▸ “I am seeking a legal separation.” Florida does not recognize legal separations. Since this is a “no fault” state, the parties do not have to be separated either before or even during the divorce. ▸▸ “I am not seeking child support.” Parents cannot waive a child support obligation, since the support does not actually belong to the parents. This is the one area where the parties cannot waive the requirements of the law. ▸▸ “Only women can seek alimony.” Florida’s alimony statute does not preclude the payment of alimony to Husband’s. Alimony is based upon a number of factors, including length of marriage and the respective income of both parties. ▸▸ “I have the children most often, so therefore the children and I can relocate to another state.” Florida has a very strict relocation statute. It requires either consent from the other parent or a court order. The requirements are based upon a number of factors, which all relate to the best interests of the children. These are just a few of the misconceptions I seem to address on a fairly regular basis. I know that there are many others. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office and hopefully we can clear them up for you. For information, visit www.divorcebroward.com or call 954-385-9160.

Real Estate Rent versus Buy – The Ever-Changing Dynamic By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, Realtor®
M
ost think that a Real Estate professional wants to encourage clients to “buy” versus “rent” because it is financially beneficial to the agent. There will be circumstances where renting is truly the best decision at the time. A true professional wants clients to experience unparalleled customer service through attention to detail, sound recommendations, and by meeting the needs of each and every individual on a case-by-case basis. However, there comes a time in the big economic picture where it is more advantageous for the client to step confidently into the shoes of home ownership. Recent results of a study released by Trulia show Miami as the number one city in America where it is now more advantageous to buy than to rent. “With rental values strengthening across South Florida, contrasted against the best home values for purchase that we have experienced in the last decade, more and more residents are returning to home ownership.” This is good news for our future homeowners in 2011. According to Facts & Trends™, sales of single-family homes and condominiums in Miami-Dade currently represent 51% of all sale/rental transactions, with 49% of all transactions being rentals. In Broward, 56% of all transactions are sales and 44% are rentals. In 2008, sales across Miami-Dade had fallen to 38% of all transactions, while 62% were rentals. As the numbers reflect, there has been tremendous progress toward re-balancing the market over these past two years. The total number of Miami-Dade and Broward sales increased by 79% between 2008 and 2010 - from 28,000 total homes and condominiums sold in 2008 to 50,000 sold in 2010. Pending sales in January 2010 are up over 20% compared with 2009. While there continues to be a steady increase in the number of sales, there will be a steadying of home values until the flow of new distressed properties ceases. According to my sources, distressed property inventory is currently down 75%; however, one cannot predict the ebb and flow of the foreclosure inventory. Many homebuyers who were priced out of the market will now have a window of opportunity to enter the market – especially while the interest rates remain low. In spite of the distressed market, I am anticipating that 2011 is going to be a stellar year for the number of South Florida homes sold. Non-distressed properties, properly priced, move at the speed of light and often times have multiple bids. Some of these bids are either cash or full-price offers, or both. Our industry is trying to educate potential buyers as to the shifting rent-versus-buy dynamic. Remember -- just some of the benefits of owning a home may include: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Mortgage interest deduction Property tax deduction Homestead Exemption (an added benefit) Deductible home-buying expenses
Your accountant would be the best resource as to how homeownership would benefit your particular financial and tax picture. For years several of my friends would rent as I would encourage them to buy. They would keep telling me, “Next year. Next year.” “Next year” became “next decade.” How much money have they poured into the pockets of their landlords? How many tax dollars did they forfeit? How many homes could they have bought and sold (to upgrade their investment) which would have benefited their retirement portfolio? How much investment property could they have purchased that would have been of a tax and/or retirement benefit? If you would like the current Facts & Trends™ graphs sent to you on a quarterly basis, call 954-306-7298 or send an email to zonster@aol.com

home décor Successful Staging Sells Homes By Susan Reich
S
elling a home is a stressful experience. Home staging provides you with a number of benefits to ease the selling process. Staging forces you to think like a buyer. When you set out to stage your home for the market, you will be looking at the home as if you were a buyer. Adopting this perspective early on will help you in many ways when preparing your home for the market. Staging forces you to organize and de-clutter. Clearing away shelves, closets and cabinets is a big part of the home staging process. It also helps with moving, because you’ll have to pack things away at some point anyway. Staging increases likelihood of a sale. When selling your home, you must do everything within your power to increase your chances of selling — and I mean everything. These techniques can give you an extra edge in selling the home quickly. Staging can be fun! It may sound like all work and no play at first. Granted, you will certainly be putting some elbow grease into the process. But staging a home can be a creative process as well, and many people find they enjoy it once they’ve begun.
Here are some suggestions on how to successfully stage the family room and/or living room: ▸▸ Clear the room of family portraits and other items that say “you don’t live here” to buyers. Remember, they need to envision themselves in the home. ▸▸ Arrange the room in a conversational way. Try different furniture arrangements until you get the best fit. ▸▸ Choose a warm paint color for the living room. Use neutral tones in this space. “Neutral” does
not have to be boring. You can liven up a neutral color scheme with colorful accent items, such as pillows and rugs. Color-coordinate these items for a professional and “put together” appearance. ▸▸ Let the room breathe. If it’s crowded or hard to walk through because of too much or overstuffed furniture, remove some items and place them in storage. ▸▸ Consider renting furniture for staging purposes. If your family room ensemble consists of that old couch from college days and a cheap table with wobbly legs, replace them with some nice rental pieces. ▸▸ If the furniture is a bit worn but otherwise intact, use a slip cover as a low-cost way to enhance the appearance of your couch and chairs. Slip covers can also help you neutralize overly bright or “loud” fabric colors. SR Home Design offers complete design services. Susan is available to help select the best options for you. Flooring, furniture, paint colors, or custom woodwork, “Helping bring your visions to life!” is Susan’s goal. You can reach Susan at SR Home Design at (954) 253-1833, or online at susan@srhomedesign.com and www.srhomedesign.com.

was flooded by mail asking what to do with small windows. My advice is always to think big. Just because the opening is small, short or narrow doesn’t mean we have to dress it that way. Think of how we style our clothing to make ourselves seem taller; we use stripes. To add some body, we wear horizontal stripes. To create an elongated torso, we wear our belts below the waist. To translate this into your drapery, place your tiebacks lower to make the panel seem longer. Height: To create height, go higher than your window. Normal is 3” above. Once you have soffit space above, use it. Go ceiling height if you have 9 ft. ceilings. Width: To make your window look wider than it is, extend your rods as much as you can to the sides. If your view is important to you, make sure blinds and drape panels stack off to the sides onto the wall. If not, the fabric hangs in the window and conceals your view. This is called “stack back” and is definitely something you want to discuss with your drapery designer. Add Layers: The pictures use a contrast band for interest, as in the green and copper drapery, or a Roman shade in a natural material or in a neutral fabric. By adding layers, you are doing two things: ▸▸ You are increasing the functionality of your window because you can raise and lower the shade to control your privacy. ▸▸ You are adding dimension to you window. It is the same concept as when we dress with a jacket and inner piece. Like an inner piece for your jacket, you can contrast it for interest or coordinate the colors for an integrated look. I invite you to visit our 4,000 sq foot showroom. We feature the endless possibilities to dress up small windows and give them spunk. Chan has four kids and admits that it is not an easy job. Wilma cleans the house inside and out and also helps with special projects. “Wilma has her work cut out for her when she arrives at my home, but she always finds a way to work her magic,” said Chan. “She is very thorough and makes sure to move all of the furniture to clean underneath and behind it. When she leaves, the house is squeaky clean and well organized. I wish she could come every day. We consider her to be part of our family.” John Casale hired Wilma more than a year ago to clean his Cooper City home. He leaves her a key since he is at work when she arrives. “I have used several other cleaning services in the past and none were as reliable, trustworthy and thorough as Wilma,” said Casale. “I would recommend her without hesitation.” Wilma has been cleaning Michael Maffei’s Davie home for more than one year. “She is very efficient, trustworthy and always pleasant,” said Maffei. “I would definitely recommend her.”

ilma’s Professional Cleaning is ready to tackle your toughest cleaning job and leave your home or business looking its best. No job is too big, small or dirty! The experts at Wilma’s do it all. Owner Wilma Downey loves to clean – a chore that many people hate. Wilma is a native of Brazil. When she was only seven years old, her father passed away and she was forced to find a job to pay for books and help support herself. She worked all day and went to school at night. Wilma says she is forever indebted to the woman who hired her as a housekeeper when she was just a child. She started cleaning more than 40 years ago and has not stopped since. “Cleaning is my passion,” said Wilma. “I cannot imagine doing anything else.” In 1993, Wilma moved to the United States and learned to speak English. She settled in Boston, where she met and married John Downey and later became a U.S. citizen. Nine years ago, they moved to South Florida. Many of her clients have been with her since she first arrived. Wilma works as a team with her two sisters to clean bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, windows and floors, as well as special requests. “We all share the same high standards,” said Wilma. “We do whatever needs to get done. When we leave, the house looks clean and smells fresh.” Wilma and her sisters clean every room of the house as if it were their own. They move furniture and clean in hard to reach areas. They get down on their hands and knees to scrub floors and get corners clean. It is this old-fashioned approach to
