Take Stock in What is Important this New Year BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
I
n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans.

Bring The Entire Family to the Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival BY NICOL JENKINS
S
tep right up! Come one, come all, to the annual Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival. Bring the whole family to a fun-filled event at this year’s annual Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival. The event will be held at Pine Trails Park, located at 10555 Trails End, Parkland. Join the fun with carnival games, rides, music, and your favorite carnival eats. The Carnival will be held on Friday, January 10th from 5 pm to 10 pm, Saturday, January 11th from Noon to 11 pm, and Sunday, January 12th from Noon to 6 pm. Residents and visitors can look forward to traditional carnival games, treats like cotton candy, funnel cakes, and lemonade, and more than 13 mechanical rides. That backdrop is host to local performances on the Amphitheatre stage Friday night and live music on-stage all night Saturday. “The City of Parkland Family Fun Fest has taken
place for more than five years,” said Todd DeAngelis, Director of Communications for the City of Parkland, adding, “The goal of the Family Fun Fest Carnival is to provide Parkland residents with a full weekend of family-friendly activities and provide opportunities for friends to gather.” The Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival is a great event for the entire community. “This event brings together people throughout our community, including long-time residents, new residents, those with children, and even those whose children have long since graduated high school and moved on to college. It’s a big event, it lasts the entire weekend, it’s right in everyone’s backyard, there’s good food, and it provides a fun experience to enjoy with friends,” said DeAngelis. The Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival continues to grow each year, offering more rides, food, live entertainment and fun for everyone in the City of Parkland. What started with City staff hearing the resi-
dents say they wanted a carnival so they didn’t have to travel so far to other Cities, has blossomed into one of our most popular events year after year,” said DeAngelis, adding, “It continues to grow and continues to be a place for residents to gather. The young kids love the rides and games, the older kids like to meet their friends there, the parents bump into one another and catch up, and everyone loves the food.” They will sell unlimited ride wristbands in advance at the P-REC at Pine Trails Park as well as on-site at the event. Advanced sale ticket for one day of unlimited rides is $25. On- site ticket for one day of unlimited rides is $30. Advanced sale ticket “Mega Band” for three days of unlimited rides is $60. A Treasure Trove Awaits Right Around the Corner BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any have heard of thrift shops and visualized or thought of them in a negative way. Some shops out there may be precisely what the preconceived notion is, but one shop that is most definitely not is La Lu Thrift Boutique. La Lu Thrift Boutique is exactly that – a thrift store with a boutique feel. The well-organized store features an array of new and pre-owned furniture items, art, estate pieces, gold, silver, fashion jewelry, home décor, and even clothing and shoes. For those searching for unique gift items for yourself or others, search no more. Vintage, estate, and one-of-a-kind inventories are offered for the savviest of “thrifters” at La Lu Thrift Boutique. Hundreds of new treasures arrive daily and different specials are posted regularly. As a result, customers stop in daily or weekly to see what new items have arrived. Another surprise finding at La Lu Thrift Boutique is the best selection of brand new, name brand mattresses at low prices including memory foam and innerspring. They import directly from manufacturers they know and trust to ensure quality. They then pass on their incredible savings directly to their customers. Co-owners Rochelle Roberts
and Ed Reino hold their place of business to very high standards. All pre-owned items are gently used and inspected for quality before ever being placed on the sales floor. Shoppers will only find merchandise that is clean, pressed, and in new condition. They will pass on items they know won’t sell, isn’t up to date, or doesn’t meet inspection. Therefore, one can be confident when buying in their store. Roberts and Reino recently took some time to answer some frequently asked questions about La Lu Thrift Boutique. What differentiates you from the competition? We pride ourselves on high standards and quality. For those that have never visited a thrift store, you will find La Lu Thrift Boutique to be well organized, friendly, and stocked with thousands of new and like-new items. F
or 30 years, the City of Coral Springs has been celebrating the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the local community. This year, the City will continue the tradition of hosting events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will host the MLK Award Reception: Student Art & Literary Exhibits. The event will take place on Thursday, January 16th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Coral Springs Center of the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive Coral Springs, Florida 33065. Take a night down memory lane and enjoy the greatest soul hits with Motown Magic! The MLK Celebration: Motown Magic will be held on Friday, January 17th from 7 pm to 10 pm at Coral Springs Center of the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive Coral Springs, Florida 33065. Motown Magic takes you back to great memories and good times with hits from: The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, The Jacksons, Lionel Richie and more. For more details, visit www. CoralSpringsCenterfortheArts.com. The MLK Committee hosts a Diversity &
Leadership Day for high school and middle school students. The MLK Leadership/Diversity Day, which will be held on Monday, January 20th at the Northwest Regional Library, 3151 N. University Drive Coral Springs, begins at 8:30 am and ends at 1 pm. This is a “Day On, Not a Day Off” and offers students to learn what Dr. King stood for by participating in interactive activities and listening to a motivational speaker. Pre-registration is required through the schools. For more details, call 954-344-1005. “This will be our 30th Anniversary Celebration. In 1990, the City of Coral Springs started honoring the legacy of this great American leader and role model, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Lydia Cutz, Community Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. “For the past 30 years, the MLK Committee, with the support of the City, has dedicated itself to living and perpetuating the dreams of Dr. King.” The City of Coral Springs hopes the community will come to one or more of the events. “The City feels that the values and teachings of Dr. King apply and appeal to every segment of our
population– businesses, students, teachers, families and seniors. It is our way of inspiring everyone to follow his teachings so that we can build a harmonious community,” said Cutz. In the spirit of giving, the MLK Committee also sponsors a Scholarship Program for high school seniors attending college or a higher institution of learning. The Scholarship is intended to assist financially-needy students only. The Committee raises funds all year long to fund this Program. The MLK Jr. events will educate the local youth on his teachings. “Many of our students are not familiar with the history and struggles of the Civil Rights movement and the sacrifices Dr. King and other black leaders made to gain freedom and equal rights for all. It is important that they be reminded of these events so that they appreciate the liberties they enjoy in their young lives,” added Cutz. For more details on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, visit www.coralsprings.org.

Climb Aboard the New G
etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.
The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue
thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. A Better Way to Commute This new, premium transit service is designed to get commuters from western Broward County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade

County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40 am with continual buses running until 9:40 am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45 pm, with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20 pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24 pm. Broward County Transit Senior Planner Tara Crawford says, “The 75 Express Bus gives you a comfortable, stress-free and easy connection to the Miami International Airport via
the Miami Airport Station, with connections to the Civic Center and Downtown Miami/Brickell.” Transfers via Miami Dade Transit buses and Metro Rail trains make it easy to get around the Miami metro area. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595, and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute.
75 EXPRESS BUS
Starting Instead of paying a toll, or relatively higher tolls (typically during high-traffic times), 75 Express Bus riders can now enjoy the time-saving benefits of the express lanes at no additional cost. Free Service The 75 Express Bus will be free for all riders during
its first week of service, from January 13th to January 17th. Simply show up at the BB&T Center or Miami Gardens park and ride lot and hop on the Express Bus free of charge. For additional opportunities to ride for free after the trial period has ended, go to www.TryTransitFree.com.

Planning Your Estate BRODZKI Without a Will
JACOBS www.bjblawyers.com

30 JANUARY 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
BY: ALYSSA C. BAER, ESQ.
A
s an Estate Planning Attorney, I am often asked the question, “Do I really need a Will or a Trust?” Colloquially, I reply in typical lawyer fashion, “It depends.” On what does it depend, you may be wondering. Whether you need a Will or Trust will depend on the types of assets you own at the time of your death. There are several low or no cost estate planning tools that can be very effective in devising assets to beneficiaries without ever drafting a Will or a Trust. In Florida, the law makes it simple to transfer Real Estate from a decedent to a beneficiary without a Will. Therefore, if you own a home or any other type of Real Estate, it makes sense to have a Lady Bird Deed drafted. A Lady Bird Deed reserves for the Grantor an enhanced life estate, or a right to own the property during the Grantor’s lifetime, and upon her death, the interest in the property will transfer to the named remaindermen. As opposed to an ordinary life estate, an enhanced “Lady Bird” life estate reserves all of the rights of ownership to the life tenant (usually the Grantor). Some of these rights include the right to sell, encumber or gift the property. Relatively inexpensive, and straightforward for the property owner, a Lady Bird Deed allows the owner to devise real estate without drafting a Will. An Estate Planning attorney can assist in the drafting and recording of the Lady Bird Deed to ensure that it is done properly. Another class of assets that be passed along without a Will are financial assets, including, but not limited to bank accounts, retirement accounts, brokerage accounts, and life insurance policies. These assets often have “payable on death” or beneficiary designations. If the account owner names a beneficiary to the account, said designation will be given effect once the owner’s death certificate is provided to the banking institution. There may be additional forms to complete, but the process will be much more streamlined and less costly than probating a Will. In order to designate a beneficiary to your accounts, you will have to contact each banking institution and inform them in writing of your wishes. Most institutions will have their own forms for you to fill in. Just as you would review a Will from time to time, is wise to check account beneficiary designations periodically to ensure they are still in line with your wishes. Since many Florida residents only own assets in the class of real estate or financial accounts, and often times both, it would save the Testator and his or her beneficiaries a lot of time and money to meet with an Estate Planning attorney to discuss the options mentioned in this article. Many times, a Will is not necessary, but avoiding planning altogether can cause your intended beneficiaries to be disinherited in favor of distant relatives or the state.

SCHOOL NEWS
MSD Eagles Historic Season Comes to an End As Seniors Turn to College Selection BY JOHN DUKA
T
he Marjory Stoneman Douglas football team was recognized by the City of Coral Springs after finishing one of the best seasons in the school’s history. The team finished the year with an 8-2 record, winning its first district title in 18 years. First-year coach, Quentin Short took the reins of the program last spring and was sure what he had. The long-time Douglas assistant knew the returning players’ strengths and weakness and where the team needed help. “They work so hard and have been through so much,” commented Short, “I’m so excited for the school, the community, and everyone.” The team was led by returning starters Brian Smith at running back, wide receiver/free safety Christian Higgins ,offensive guard Gage Gaynor and two-way tight end and defensive end Ryan Belk. The seniors were leaders in the classroom as well as on the football field. Belk will attend and play football at Yale next year, while Smith and Higgins are weighing offers from multiple schools including Nicholas College. Gaynor has not
announced his collegiate intensions yet but has scholarship offers from Louisville, the Air Force Academy and several other Division 1 universities. The Eagles surprise success this year was helped by a number of upper classman transfer students. Three transfer offensive lineman helped make the team’s unit one of the best in the state. These players include juniors Justin Jaillet and Mike McLaughlin and senior Bryce Gott. Perhaps the most impactful transfer student, however, was quarterback Matthew O’Dowd. The junior made a huge impact on the team as soon as he set foot on campus. Despite ending with a disappointing loss, the season was a fun one. The season started with an exciting win at Orlando’s Colonial High School. In a back-and-forth game, the Eagles pulled the victory behind strong offensive line play and Brian Smith’s 230 yards on the ground. After a decisive win against regional opponent Cypress Bay, the team hosted Monarch High School. Playing from behind for most of the game, the team battled to get inside the 20 yard line, down by 2 with
three seconds to play. The ensuing field goal attempt became an instant viral hit on the internet. After a muffed snap, holder Christian Higgins picked up the ball, ran the right and threw a strike for the touchdown and the win. The team then rattled off five more consecutive wins before ending the season on a down turn with a meaningless regular season loss to Plantation and the playoff loss to Miami. This is the first time Douglas has won their District in over a decade and its first playoff appearance in as long a time. After losing a number of key seniors, Short will have his work cut out for him next season. We will be rooting for him!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY appy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2020! With a new decade and a new year, our city continues to work on improving community outreach and communication. Thank you to all who participated in our Parks and Recreation Master Plan focus groups and surveys. Your input is necessary, helpful and valued. We expect to have a final report on the community feedback regarding the Parks and Recreation Master plan early in the New Year. While we work on the master plan, we have not waited to make certain key decisions. At the end of 2019, an idea brought up at our 2018 strategic planning session, finally came to fruition. The city purchased the 24.4 acres on the northwest corner of Hillsboro Boulevard and Nob Hill Road from Beasley Media Group. This land borders 11 acres of city-owned park land just east of the property. The purchase serves two purposes. First, Lennar had expressed interest in purchasing the property and now, under city ownership, it will not be developed for housing. Also between the 24.4 acres purchased and the adjacent 11 acres of city-owned park land, we will have open green space and opportunities for additional city facilities should they be needed. We will keep you updated regarding the progress. Speaking of progress - starting this year our commission meetings will be live-streamed on the City of Parkland website so that anyone can watch the meetings live or view the archived meeting video at their convenience. Our next City Commission meeting is on Wednesday, January 8 at 7pm. You can view all meeting agendas and backup material at www. cityofparkland. org/cc. Also, I will be holding office hours on Thursday, January 9 from 4pm-6pm at Parkland City Hall. There is no appointment necessary. If you are unable to make it to my office hours, please feel free to contact me via email at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with any questions or concerns you may have. We have lots of community events and activities happening in January in Parkland. On January 20 we will have a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute from 5:30-7:30pm at the Amphitheater. Dr. King challenged all of us to look for the common good and to be of service in our communities. I hope you will join us for this wonderful event. The Farmers’ Market continues at the Equestrian Center from 9am – 1pm, with a Health and Wellness Fair on January 5 and the second market of the month on January 19. Parkland’s Family Fun Fest Carnival takes place from January 10-12 at Pine Trails Park and promises to make for a fun weekend!
H
n Keep up with all the events happening in Parkland by following us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and subscribing to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme. I always appreciate hearing from residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at the e-mail address above or whenever you see me around town. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy New Year! 40 JANUARY 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

TOMMY RUZZANO, MARGATE MAYOR appy New Year! On behalf of the Margate City Commission, I want to wish everyone the very best in 2020! It’s a new year and a new decade, and we hope you closed out 2019 on a positive note with your loved ones – making lasting memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. As your new Mayor, one of my main priorities is to work with the Commission and Administration to enhance the quality of life for all City of Margate residents. In 2019, we completed a major improvement project at the Margate Sports Complex, a beautiful facility that now has new, state-of-the-art batting cages and dugouts; bleachers that are covered by shade canopies; an ADA-accessible covered playground with equipment that allows complete access for disabled and unique users; a baseball-themed splash pad; and a multi-purpose trail with handicap accessible fitness equipment. The Sports Complex is located at 1695 Banks Road. If you haven’t been to Firefighters Park since we’ve completed the renovations, it’s a must! This 11.5-acre park located at 2500 Rock Island Road now has a brand new covered playground that even the grown-ups will want to play on; newly resurfaced tennis and basketball courts; brand new pickle ball courts; and a ½ mile fitness trail with 12 exercise stations. In addition to these renovations, the park also includes an artificial turf soccer rink, a community PuzzleJunction.com game room, a Firefighter Memorial, Safety Town, and a regulation sand volleyball court. I look forward to more improvements around the City in 2020. We will continue enhancing our parks and facilities through the Parks Bond that voters approved in our last election. In addition, contractors are working on replacing the City’s water main lines to enhance water delivery, increase water pressure, and improve water quality for many of our residents and businesses. Please join us for Movies in the Park on January 25th at 6 p.m. at the Margate Sports Complex. The featured movie is Toy Story 4. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic blankets to enjoy this hit blockbuster movie under the stars. Then, on February 1st from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., come out for Sounds at Sundown at the corner of Margate Boulevard and State Road 7. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and be ready to dance the night away with the rock band, Style. A wide variety of food trucks will be available along with arts and crafts vendors and family-friendly activities. For more information, please visit margatefl.com. If you’d like to contact me, please don’t hesitate to send me an email at truzzano@margatefl. com or call (954) 972-6454.

H
appy New Year from the Coral Springs Commission! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season shared with friends and family. December was certainly a busy month as we celebrated Downtown in December, our Holiday Heroes Parade, and welcomed new City Manager, Frank Babinec. We are excited for our City’s future under the leadership of City Manager Babinec. For the past 30 years, the City has honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This month we are pleased to do so once again with a Student Art & Literary Exhibit at the Coral Springs Museum of Art (2855 Coral Springs Drive) on Thursday, January 16 from 5-6:30 p.m. On Friday, January 17, we invite the public to the MLK Monument Award Presentation time? followed by the Motown Magic Ultimate Tribute concert at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts from 7-9 p.m. On the official observance of the MLK Holiday, the Coral Springs MLK Committee will host a Diversity & Leadership Workshop for high school and middle school students called “It’s a Day On, Not a Day Off.” This workshop offers students an opportunity to learn what Dr. King fought for, with interactive activities, musical entertainment and lunch.
