reatSchools.org, a nonprofit that helps parents unlock educational opportunities for their children recently released its 2021 GreatSchools College Success Awards. Now in its fourth year, the GreatSchools College Success Award recognizes and celebrates public high schools across the country that excel at helping students enroll and succeed in college. In 2021, 1,838 schools from 25 states won the annual College Success Award. This unique award, based on high school and postsecondary data provided by state education agencies, offers a snapshot of how well a high school prepares its students to enroll in college, succeed with college-level coursework, and continue into their second year. To celebrate schools with a multi-year track record of postsecondary success, GreatSchools also added an additional, elevated level of distinction: the College Success Award – Gold. Parkland Named Safest City in Florida By Jon Duka
T
here are many reasons people from around the country are flocking to live in Parkland. One of them: Parkland is the safest city in Florida. The website HomeSnacks ranked Parkland as the safest city in Florida. 2021 marks the highest-ranking Parkland has attained since the rankings were first published in 2013. HomeSnacks claims to “paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on
‘Friday Night Science’ — how’d you argue at a bar. To do that, they gather data from around the web to help determine a wide array of factors about where you live, things like safety, desirability, and culture.” This year’s rankings mark the seventh time the site has published its findings. Parkland has been included on their list each year. Weston was the only other Broward city on the list, coming in at third. To determine the rankings, researchers reviewed several criteria to give a city its overall score. Cities were indexed and ranked on various crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, car theft, and arson. Parkland was near the top in the state for every category. According to the survey, Parkland was the second safest city for violent crimes and the third safest city for property crime. Parkland had 198 total crimes in 2021, which is a rate of 562 per 100,000 people. The low crime rate puts Parkland 77% below the national average.
In addition to Parkland and Weston, the top ten included Marco Island, Longboat Key, Flagler Beach, Sanibel, Indian Harbour Beach, North Palm Beach, Bay Harbor Islands, and Lake Alfred. Parkland’s number-one ranking returned the city to its previous position as an extremely safe place despite the horrible school shooting three years ago. The same study found the most dangerous cities in Florida to be Florida City, Lake City and Opa Locka, in that order. In HomeSnacks’ broader “Best Places to Live” rankings, Parkland came in at 10th. The city ranked highly for job opportunity, housing, safety, amenities, diversity, and education, with only affordability and commute time dragging down its scores. The study criteria included median home values, median income, population density, unemployment rate, commute time, crime, education levels, health insurance coverage, and poverty rates. It noted that Parkland has a population of 31,454, a median income of $154,844, a median home value of $611,800, and an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent.

Local Cyclists Got in Gear for a Charity Ride By Beverly Perkins

appy New Year! I hope you and your family had an enjoyable holiday season and are having a great start to a better and brighter year ahead! It was wonderful to be back home for the holidays, to attend so many local events, and to meet and catch up with constituents and friends. The New Year is often a time where we reflect on the past and make resolutions on how we can improve upon the future. For the past few years, I have chosen a word every January to set the tone for the year ahead. This year I have chosen the word “gratitude.” The past two years have reminded me how quickly time passes us by and how our world can change at a moment’s notice. It is easy to take for granted the blessings we are given every day, no matter how small they may be and no matter how challenging our day may be. Sometimes we forget to notice the good moments, the moments of joy when they happen. Sometimes we take for granted those around us and forget to let them know how much we care and love them. This year, I will strive to be mindful, to be present in the moment, to not let the negative completely drown out the positive, to keep things in perspective, and to work toward solutions. One of the things that always keeps me grounded is listening to people, hearing their stories, and learning from them. There is something so beautiful when we can connect on a personal level with the people who live in our communities. I am always inspired and humbled to hear people’s life stories, the ups and the downs, and the challenges they overcame. We have so many incredible people in our community who show up and give back whenever they can. They are often the overlooked heroes who I personally appreciate and have so much gratitude for. Thank you to all of you for bringing me into your daily lives this past year and trusting me to serve as your voice in the House of Representatives and in our community as your District 96 State Representative. It is my honor to serve. The Legislative Session begins this month in Tallahassee on January 11 and runs through March 11. You can follow all the bills filed and coming before the various committees by visiting www. myfloridahouse.gov. Please reach out to me with any thoughts or concerns you may have. The decisions we make are guided by input from our residents and business owners, the very people who elected us to hold office. Our community’s participation is paramount to our success as a city. This includes how federal funding is allocated. That is why we invite residents to join us for a community forum to discuss American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) program funding on Monday, January 24, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. in Commission Chambers. From community forums, public commission meetings, email communication, connecting through social media, and the My Coral Springs App, there are so many ways you can help guide our city’s direction and share comments or concerns. We are excited to kick off the new year with a great roster of events! On January 15, 2022, at 9 a.m., families and students of all ages along with elected officials and community leaders, can participate in a game of chess at our Mayor’s Chess Challenge! And, on Saturday, January 29, 2022, we invite residents to our popular Bites-N-Sips event!
