T

his month we will all be part of history. The 2020 Census will be the first to be completed online, but there are options to complete by mail or even phone if you prefer. By definition, a census is an official count or survey of a population. Our Constitution calls for an “actual enumeration” to be completed once a decade. The first census was taken in 1790. It included the original 13 States, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine, and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 enumeration asked for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: free white males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential); free white males under 16 years; free white females; all other free persons; and slaves. Census 2020 will ask questions such as the number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020; whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent; and the name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home. When filling out your census it is important to include every person living in the household, regardless of age, citizenship or immigration status. Your responses are confidential and protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share responses identifying individuals with the public or other federal agencies, including immigration authorities and law enforcement. The results of Census 2020 will have a direct impact on our communities, so it is critical that everyone is counted. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states, counties and cities each year for things such as health care, fire departments, school funding, and even construction of roads and highways. Census data also determines our political future by determining how many seats in Congress each state gets and legislative districts. Please keep an eye on your mailbox this month and be sure to take the steps to complete Census 2020. Your community is counting on you being counted. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Don’t fret about your colonoscopy, new prep is easier to swallow When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days. Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow. Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Gloria Francis, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Coral Springs location. Gloria Francis, MD Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Francis. But it’s a key part of the procedure.

Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.

• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Francis. “The clear liquids aid in that process.” • Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy. A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This mean that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Francis. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.

Community Family Thrift 35 Years and BY JOHN A. BRODIE

C

ommunity Family Thrift is celebrating 35 years of providing value and assistance to local communities in South Florida. Their first store opened 1985 in Hialeah in the Flamingo Plaza. The Miami Beach store opened in 1986 followed by expansion to North Miami and Boca Raton in 1990. These locations feature large selections of household items, electronics, and gently used clothing. Their newest location is located in Margate and opened in 2017. It is a specialty boutique focused on furniture, jewelry and unique specialty items to decorate your home. This new location, named La Lu Thrift Boutique, has become a popular spot to visit in Margate. We had the chance to speak with Edward Reino, Operator of Community Family Thrift to learn a little more about the Community Family Thrift operation. With Thrift Stores and Consignment Stores closing every day, how do you keep thriving? “We have a small operation that we keep as lean as possible. Our employees are very dedicated and have been a part of “our family” for many years. Our manager at the Boca Raton store, for instance, has been with us for over 20 years!

Our team shares a true interest in providing friendly customer service and a commitment to providing for a better local community.” “We employ local South Florida personnel in Hialeah, North Miami, Margate, and West Boca. We pick up charitable donations of clothing, furniture, electronics, home décor and linens six days a week. With several trucks on the road every day, we reach donors from Jupiter to Islamorada in the Keys. Thousands of items arrive daily so the merchandise is always changing!” The customers have a variety of shopping needs. Some love to save money, support charitable causes, search for unique gifts, and decorate their home with one-of—kind items. They have many regular shoppers who come in for items to resell on ebay, facebook marketplace, or other online markets. They have something for each customer that walks in their doors! Plus, same-day delivery is available for furniture or any other large items purchased. Thrift stores like Community Family Thrift play a valuable role directly supporting charity. It’s good for the environment - re-wearing clothes reduces waste and pollution. Every garment purchased second-hand means one less new one produced, which is important because regardless of material, the production of clothing is costly to the environment. Thrifting is cheaper. Secondhand clothing is often higher quality than comparatively-priced clothing. Thrift stores are notorious for the unique and unusual items they often contain. Thrift shopping allows for more creativity. In short, thrifting is more environmentally and socially responsible, and personally rewarding. What are you waiting for?

Golfing For The King Tournament is in its 14th Year of Raising Funds for Scholarships BY NICOL JENKINS

or 14 years, local golfers have been attending the Golfing for the King Tournament in support of raising funds for student scholarships. The “Golfing for the King” 14th Annual Coral Springs MLK, Jr. Golf Classic will be held on March 13th from 7 am to Noon at the Country Club of Coral Springs, located at 10800 W. Sample Road Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The golf tournament will benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund for needy Coral Springs high school students regardless of ethnicity. Golfers can look forward to many activities at the tournament. Registration will start at 7 am, followed by shotgun at 8 am. There will be a four person scramble, continental breakfast, buffet awards luncheon, raffle

tickets, beverages on the course, on course challenges and contests, a driving range, tournament awards, and a signature gift pack. In addition to a day of fun on the golf course, the Golfing for the King tournament will benefit the local community. “This will be the 14th year of the tournament. It started as a way to collect funds for the MLK Scholarship, something the MLK Committee members are very passionate about,” said Sue Knight, Interim Community Relations Manager for the City of Coral Springs, adding, “Our goal is to raise money for the MLK Scholarship Fund. All proceeds from the golf tournament go directly into scholarships offered to financially-needy high school seniors wishing to attend college or other institution of

higher learning.” This scholarship has helped close to 400 students attend college and achieve dreams that they did not think possible. More than just the financial aspect, the mentoring, coaching and support these students have received from the MLK Committee members has been invaluable. The scholarship recipients are asked to keep in touch with the Committee as they like to track their progress, encourage them if needed and celebrate their achievements. “This tournament invests in the success of our youth. If we can help make a positive difference in their futures, we have accomplished our mission. Nothing is more rewarding than to see our former scholarship recipients evolve into professions like medicine, education, pharmacy, social services, and more,” added Knight. Local business owners also benefit from participating in this charitable event. The “Golfing for the King” 14th Annual Coral Springs MLK, Jr. Golf Classic is still looking for golfers and sponsors. OurTownAmerica Festival celebrates 41 years of family fun and entertainment BY NICOL JENKINS

S

ince 1979, the OurTownAmerica festival has offered a weekend of fun, rides and food for the entire family to enjoy. The City of Coral Springs’ longest running festival is celebrating its 41st year. The three-day arts, entertainment, and business festival will begin on Friday, March 13th and continues through Sunday, March 15th from 10 am to 11 pm, at the Coral Springs Sportsplex, 2575 Sportsplex Drive Coral Springs, located between Sample Road and Royal Palm just East of the Sawgrass Expressway. The OurTownAmerica mission is to provide a fun festival for the whole family while raising funds for programs and services of Community Nonprofit Organizations in the Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade County areas. After the weekend festival, OurTownAmerica, Inc. donates proceeds to local organizations. This year, OurTownAmerica will feature events geared towards family fun and include live entertainment, food court, amusements, arts

& crafts, merchant booths, a classic car show, games, and much more. Local Community Service Organizations and other Nonprofit Organizations will host food concessions. They will have about 30 festival rides for children and adults of all ages, food booths, local entertainment for opening ceremonies on Friday evening from 6 pm to 11 pm, and on Saturday they offer local talent till 11 pm; on Sunday they start at Noon and go till 6 pm with more local talent including bands, singers, dancers and martial arts. The entertainment tent is 50’x100’ with a raised stage 30’x40’ with a full state-of-the art sound & lighting system with a resident technician. Other attractions include: professional wrestling, classic car show, demonstrations by Coral Springs Fire Department and much more. They will also have a meet and greet on Saturday

from 12:30 pm to 2 pm with actress Sami Gayle, who plays Nicky Regan Boyle from the TV Show “Blue Bloods”, who will be here to answer all of your questions– don’t miss this opportunity! “OurTownAmerica is a great threeday event that brings the community together for a weekend of fun, entertainment, and great food. OurTownAmerica brings approximately 100,000 people to the event over the weekend. The goal is to have fun and enjoy all that the event has to offer,” said Joseph Pozzuoli, OurTownAmerica Vice Chairman and Entertainment Chairman. The first OurTownAmerica festival was held in 1979. Originally the OurTownAmerica event was sponsored by the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce. In 1997, a group of non-profit organizations and private individuals banded together to reorganize the event and established OurTownAmerica, Inc., a not for profit 501(c) 3 organization whose board has put on the event ever since. With the reorganization in 1997, a program of giving back to the community with the OurTownAmerica proceeds was established. OurTownAmerica is

a non-profit corporation whose board consists of representatives of local non-profit or charity groups including: Ernest Kubasek, OurTownAmerica Chairman, Knights of Columbus/Vets Collection Coral Springs; Joe Pozzuoli, OurTownAmerica Vice Chairman, Mrs. P’s Broadway Dancers; Mary Boast, Kiwanis; Richard Kendall, SOS Children’s Village; and William Otto, Sea Scouts Ship 339. Non-Profit organizations involved with the festival receive funding from the proceeds for their various worthwhile charities. Though the weekend event is known for its amusements, classic car show, live entertainment and booths, this very important purpose of giving back to the community has made the event very meaningful for the community. n For more information on OurTownAmerica, visit http://www.ourtownamerica.org/.

I have a lot of kids do that, but it was almost like it was baked in already, even though she was little and the racket was actually bigger than her. The only player I’ve seen like that is Martina Hingis.” Hingis would go on to be an all-time great. A status some see in Kenin’s future. H-1 B Process Overhaul Filing Easier BRODZKI To Make for Employers

JACOBS www.bjblawyers.com

BY ANDREA R. JACOBS

R

ecently, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it will implement a new electronic registration tool in connection with H-1B filings. This system will be ready for the Fiscal Year 2021 filing season which typically begins on April 1st for an October 1st start date. This new process is significantly different for employers who file for H-1B workers who are subject to the annual quota cap. With the new process, employers will register each potential H-1B worker subject to the “cap.” The preliminary online registration form requests general information about the employee and prospective H-1B employer. The form request includes basic information, such as: ▸  Name of employer, FEI Number, office address and contact information of the employer’s authorized signatory

2019

▸  Full name, date of birth, country of birth, citizenship, gender and passport number of the beneficiary ▸  Any Master’s degree or higher degree awarded by a US institution, including the name of the degree and the institution Employers will file a separate registration for every H-1B worker and will pay a $10 fee for each. There will be a registration period from March 1, 2020-March 20, 2020. Then, USCIS will run the lottery. There has not been a determination made yet of how or when the employers will be notified. However, once notified, the employers will have 90 days to file the petitions. This makes the process much more cost effective for a potential employer. If you have questions about the new H-1B electronic registration process or would like more information, please contact Brodzki Jacobs by calling 954-344-7737. 30 MARCH 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

A

hhh, the joys of Spring Break. By day, carefree fun in the sun; after hours, dancing the night away with your closest friends. It’s a great way to unwind from the grind. But Spring Break can also bring illness and injury, from cuts and burns and jellyfish stings to colds, fevers and more. With Baptist Health Care On Demand, you’ve got a doctor with you wherever you go in the U.S., 24/7, no appointment required. “Baptist Health Care On Demand is great because it’s convenient, accessible and affordable,” said David Mishkin, M.D., medical director for the service. “Students or families on Spring Break who need to see a doctor can schedule a virtual consultation from the convenience of their hotel room, and be on their way to feeling better within minutes.” Baptist Health Care On Demand is easy to use. An urgent care pioneer As the largest healthcare organization in South Florida, Baptist Health pioneered the concept of urgent care centers in the region and today has more than 25 locations from the Florida Keys to Palm Beach County. Baptist Health Care On Demand was

launched in 2017 and has quickly grown in popularity. “Care On Demand is a natural extension of Baptist Health’s urgent care network,” Dr. Mishkin said. “It allows patients with non-life-threatening illness or injury to bypass busy emergency rooms and get 24/7 online access to our trusted doctors.”

MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY s we move into the month of March, the City of Parkland (City) begins its strategic planning process in which we review both our current practices as well as plan for our upcoming annual budget. Beyond merely looking to the year ahead, the strategic planning process allows us to look into the future and set priorities for Parkland’s direction. For 2020, our City is embarking on a multimonth strategic planning process that will include input from our residents, commission, and staff. Initial planning meetings began in February and in March and April the process continues with resident outreach in addition to meetings with the commission and staff. The result will leave us with an adopted strategic plan that will include updated goals and strategic initiatives for the city and a business and work plan which will be the foundation for our annual budget planning. Issues like public safety services, a master plan for parks and recreation for residents of all ages, infrastructure improvements including traffic signals and roadway improvements, projections for completion of the communities in the Wedge, and other city services will all be discussed as part of this process. We encourage community input into our strategic planning and I hope that residents will reach out to me by email or in person to share questions, concerns, and ideas that we can discuss during strategic planning. In terms of upcoming city events, in addition to our wonderful Farmers’ Market on March 8 and March 22, we have some excellent special events in March, including our very popular Parkchella concert on March 14 from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Pine Trails Park and our Movie in the Park on March 27 from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. You can find out more about our City and all events and activities at www. cityofparkland.org and www.facebook.com/copfl. Our next city commission meetings are on Wednesday, March 4 and March 18 at 7pm. You can view all meeting agendas at www.cityofparkland.org/cc. Also, I will be holding open office hours on Thursday, March 5, from 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. at Parkland City Hall. There is no appointment necessary. If you are unable to make it to the office hours, you can reach me directly by e-mail at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

36 MARCH 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Directions

Our family has used a version of this simple recipe for years. One great thing about making pizza is the idea that there are no rules! You can make this recipe on a pizza stone, one a cookie sheet, or even directly on an over rack! It works best if you keep the oven very hot and cook it fast! 1. Preheat ove to 450 or even 500 degrees 2. On a clean counter, spread a light covering of flour and work dough into a circle about 14 inches wide with a 1/4 rim around the edge 3. Place dough onto a lightly greesed and floured cookie sheet 4. Put a very-thin coating of sauce and olive oil over the dough 5. Place mozzerella and tomato slices, alternating 6. Season with oergeno, salt & pepper 7. Put pizza in oven for 8-10 minutes 8. Quickly open oven, and add basil leaves on top 9. Cook another 2-5 minutes

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Coral Springs Update

A

s the Chief of Police for Coral Springs, my primary concern is for the safety and security of our citizens. I take that responsibility very seriously. I want all of our residents to feel safe and secure in their homes and community. We are constantly looking for ways to improve, so if you notice a large police presence in your community when you return to your neighborhood, more than likely, it is our new “Welcome Home” initiative. Our “Welcome Home” initiative is a crime prevention initiative that allows our citizens an opportunity to meet our officers as they return home from work. Our officers are stationed at the entrances of neighborhoods, where they greet citizens returning home. As our officers interact with our citizens, they provide them with crime prevention flyers, remind them to never leave valuables in their vehicles and to always lock their doors. They also remind them to NEVER leave their key fob in their vehicles. Opportunistic auto burglars will check to see if the car starts, and if it does, they will steal it. So never leave your fob behind. We began this initiative in the southwest portion of our city on January 23, 2020. We hope to continue “Welcoming

On February 3, 2020, we began our Body Camera program. Coral Springs Police officers now wear body cameras during their shifts. It is important that you see the great things our officers do. As Chief, I believe in accountability. Body cameras provide us with another layer of transparency so that the public can see the actions of our officers. This technology also provides us with the ability to capture evidence and see what our officers faced as they arrive to incidents. There is no better way of seeing what actually happened than a visual account of an incident. We also have begun the roll out our new Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Our RTCC is a room filled with TV screens connected through a computer program that allows dents and staff of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School our department to access video cameras, sophisticated map- for providing breakfast for our first responders, the stuping and databases that can be utilized as crimes unfold. dents and staff of Forest Glenn Middle School for providing This can provide instant information to responding officers lunch, and the students and staff of Coral Springs Middle and visual evidence that can assist our detectives with solv- School for hosting a cookies with a cop event. ASK THE SHERIFF

Honoring The Women Of BSO BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY y aunt was a police officer for the city of Philadelphia. I didn’t know it then, but she was a trailblazer: a proud woman in a job historically carried out by men. There have been many brave women in law enforcement who have paved the way toward progress, and we are still moving forward. The Broward Sheriff’s Office employs many women who have dedicated their lives to making a significant impact both on and off duty. I am proud of these women and the countless contributions they make to our com-

M

munities every day. As we celebrate National Women’s History Month, I’d like to introduce just a few of the women who serve within BSO. Colonel Nichole Anderson is a woman of many firsts. The Fort Lauderdale native graduated from Dillard High School in the top 10 percent of her class and has been a fixture in our community ever since. She joined BSO in 1996 and rose through the ranks. In 2011, she became the first African-American female district chief. In 2018, she became the first female BSO law enforcement deputy to attend and graduate from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia graduating from the 274th session. In January 2019, I had the distinct pleasure of promoting her as the agency’s first-ever female colonel and, most recently, she was promoted to serve as the undersheriff, which marks the first time a female has held this position in the Colonel Nichole Anderson agency’s 105-year history. Colonel Anderson’s commitment to selfless service and integrity allowed her to succeed in what was traditionally a male-dominated profession. It’s an honor to have her serve as second in command. It’s also an honor to work with individuals such as Deputy Kelli Covet. Along with her trusted canine partner, Macie, the dynamic duo have dedicated countless hours to search for and locate missing and endangered people, including children and the elderly. Aside from being a certified bloodhound, in June 2019, K9 Macie became the agency’s first-ever certified therapy dog. The work Deputy Covet and K9 Macie do each and every day makes a significant difference in the lives of people throughout the community. Aside from their daily first-responder duties, they regularly attend countywide events to build lasting connections with the community and assist people who may be experiencing crisis, tragedy, trauma or who are having a difficult time in life. Deputy Kelli Covet & Macie

Detention Deputy Judie Nance is a woman with a variety of hidden talents. Her daily responsibilities are to provide for the care, custody, and control of inmates in our jail system; however, in her spare time, she is an author. Her first children’s book, “Short and Virtuous Bedtime Stories for Children,” helps parents introduce children to the essentials of good moral character: responsibility, courage, honesty, perseverance, faith, and friendship. Her second book, “Enlightened,” teaches young girls to stand up for what is right. Both in and outside of work, Deputy Nance demonstrates compassion and commitment for Detention Deputy Judie Nance all that she does. Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) Cindy Taffel is the epitome of determination and perseverance. She loves her job, but she also loves to express herself through food. A three-time cancer survivor, Cindy understands that life is too short not to do what you love. She not only loves cooking but is an award-winning prodigy. With no formal training, Cindy took home the World Food Championship in seafood and later won the $15,000 prize on the Food Network show Cooks vs. Cons, where she beat out a formallytrained chef. FPO Taffel is an inspiration to us all. Claudine Carter Pereira, the director of the BSO Crime Lab, proves you can be and do anything you want if you put your mind to it. The 21-year year BSO veteran leads an internationally-accredited crime lab that processes approximately 25,000 cases each year. But she’s known Fire Prevention Officer Cindy Taffel to her co-workers as the “Forensic Ballerina.” A former professional dancer with both a ballet and modern contemporary company, Director Pereira studied at the premier Joffrey Ballet in New York City. When’s she’s not helping solve cases or dancing on her own, she serves as a dance instructor to local children and adults.

BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL o lower your score, you must have confidence in your fairway woods. Most courses have four Par 5’s, with 500-plus yards being the average distance. Therefore, the second shot is simply to get closer to the green and in position to hit a short iron on the green. With the second shot usually being over 200 yards, the go-to club for the average golfer will be their fairway wood. Like all clubs, confidence and expertise in use only comes from practice. Here are a few tips to improve ball strikes with the fairway woods. Use Correct Ball Position Ball position is critical when hitting fairway woods. The ball should be approximately three inches inside your left heel. Stated another way, the ball should be placed about halfway between the driver position and the middle of your stance. When considering the swing arc, the slightly forward ball position allows the club head to strike the ball at the bottom of the arc. The descending angle of the fairway wood will strike the ball then take a shallow divot indicating a proper ball strike. Take a Shallow Divot Taking a shallow divot is indication that the club head was traveling downward toward the ball before impact. The divot should be shallow, not as deep as striking the ball with an iron. In addition to revealing the club head was in a downward arc prior to the ball strike, the divot also reveals the body was traveling forward at and after the strike. Pure fairway wood shots are executed when the weight is on the front foot prior to the ball strike.

T

Don’t Hang Back As with all ball strikes, weight must be on the front foot prior to impact. Shifting weight forward when hitting a fairway wood is a little more difficult. Since the fairway woods are longer clubs and the swing is flatter, the tendency is to help the ball get up by slightly lifting the club. Trying to lift the ball is a mistake and usually results in topping the ball and dribbling it down the fairway. Getting to the front foot prior to the strike will enable you to hit down with the fairway wood allowing the loft built into the club to project the ball up and forward as designed. Pose for a Picture Occasionally we need a little assistance with our swing. Sometimes the use of your imagination can correct or at least improve the swing flaw. I teach my students to imagine they are posing for an ad for a belt buckle and the photographer needs the buckle front and center. You need to finish your swing with your belt buckle facing the target and then hold that finish to pose for the picture. By having this image in your head, you will get through the ball and have the proper weight transfer needed. Many golfers who do not shift their weight properly are not even aware that is why they cannot strike the ball solidly. Pets of the MONTH

“HENRY” This is Henry he is a one year old boxer terrier mix. He lives in Parkland with his family. His favorite person is Zachary( who also grew up in Parkland). Henry seems to find curiosity and joy in almost everything( lizards, squirrels, birds, ducks). Vacuums not so much. His favorite thing to do is have play dates with some siblings and his mom who live nearby. He was last seen running in Barkland with his new friends.

This is Chewy. He is a 5 month old shihtzu that came from Missouri. He loves his mom and dad. But he especially loves playing with his toys. Chewy has 3 shihtzu siblings, one grumpy sister and brother Cody. His very favorite is his sister Zoey. He was named Chewy because he looks just like Chewbacca from Star Wars but he is much cuter. He is such a happy boy that just wants to be near you and give kisses.

I adopted Gigi from The Humane Society in Pompano Beach. She was 6 months old when we got her in August 2015. It’s just us living at Aston Gardens Senior Living and she’s so quiet she fits right in. She likes sitting out on the porch or on the window sill. She’s always looking out the big windows. Her favorite thing above all is to get brushed. Whenever I ask her if she wants to be brushed, she will trot right over to the drawer I keep her brush in and wait for me to get there. She’ll meow at me if I’m not going fast enough for her. Her dislikes include loud noises, strangers, and the vacuum cleaner. She was last seen napping on the porch.
