March Celebrates Women's Accomplishments
M
arch is Women’s History Month. It was first recognized in the United States in 1988. In a Presidential proclamation, President Ronald Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States.
For the second year in a row, we are celebrating this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make our community such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. People like General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Vice President Kamala Harris, Abigail Johnson of Fidelity Investments, Nobel Laureate in Physics Andrea Ghez, and Miami Marlins General Manager Kim Ng are leading in all parts of our society.

FEATURE STORY
Fox Vein & Laser Experts Varicose Veins & Beyond!
V
aricose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. They can make your legs ache, burn, throb, itch, and cramp. Untreated varicose veins tend to get worse over time. They can cause leg swelling, phlebitis (vein inflammation), thrombosis (blood clots in the vein), and skin ulcers.
Fox Vein & Laser Experts specialize in diagnosing and treating venous disease, including varicose veins, leg pain and swelling, ulcer care, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clotting disorders. We offer the newest and best minimally invasive vein procedures: Endovenous laser ablation, ClariVein®, Ambulatory phlebectomies, ultrasound-guided, foam and traditional sclerotherapy.
DR. SUSAN FOX
DABVLM, DO, RPVI, FSVM Dr. Susan Fox is an expert in vein and vascular diagnosis and treatment. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Vascular Medicine, and Phlebology (the treatment of veins). She was one of the first physicians in the United States to be Board Certified in the treatment of veins. She is also a Registered Physician Vascular Interpreter (RPVI) and is certified to read vascular ultrasound studies. After completing her Medical Residency and Vascular Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, she joined the teaching faculty at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fox is a Diplomate of the American College of Phlebology and a Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine. She has been featured as a vein expert on multiple news programs in both America and Latin America and has written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. She has successfully taught physicians and medical personnel to treat venous disease for over a decade at her vein treatment facility. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
SPECIALIZING IN VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA/EVLT)
Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.
VARITHENA®
Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.
BEFORE
AFTER
AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.
SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL
Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure often seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.

Faiza Khalid, MD
IN BUSINESS
Medical Director & Physician Radiance Medspa of Weston
Her Story
Dr. Khalid has served Weston and surrounding communities since 2006. Her practice specializes in cosmetic treatments that require little to no downtime, including injectables, laser rejuvenation, and an array of noninvasive aesthetic therapies. She has been at the forefront of minimally invasive aesthetic procedures for over over 10 years and has been fortunate enough to be trained by some of the best pioneers in the aesthetic industry. Dr. Khalid offers patients almost a decade of experience with injectables, neuromodulators, and lasers. Her initial training in Family Medicine allows her to take a holistic approach towards beauty. Accentuating the power of one’s own natural beauty is Dr. Khalid’s primary philosophy. “I strongly believe in respecting the subtle nuances that are specific to each of us and I am dedicated to helping patients look the best version of themself rather than like someone else,” she said. “The human connection that I create with my patients as they embark on their aesthetic journey is the essence of my patient care.”
Advice to Young Women Beginning a Medical Career
As a woman in medicine or in any other field, the odds are stacked against you. It has taken me a while to be comfortable with my style of leadership, to own my own voice. What I’ve learned is that only you can define yourself, your dreams, and your passion. No matter how big or small they may appear to be, own your dreams, and stand up for them. You may fall, you may get tired, may even want to quit, and that’s normal. Retreating back to basecamp is ok, but only to recover, renew, and then charge back into the chaos. Remember: a winner is just a loser who tried one more time.
More About Radiance Medspa
Our primary focus is to deliver an unsurpassed patient experience from start to finish. Radiance has been serving Weston and surrounding communities since 2006. Its long history and continued client support, and the fact that they have been voted Best Medspa in Weston for the past six consecutive years in “Best of Weston” is a testament to the quality of our business practices and differentiates us from other similar businesses that are here today and gone tomorrow.

Michelle Ellis Co-Owner
Elite Funeral Funding Her Story
Michelle Ellis is the owner and founder of Elite Funeral Funding. She has been a resident of South Florida for over 40 years and has seen the growth and changes in our “little slice of paradise”. Born in Jamaica, Michelle has truly embraced and made the “American Dream” her own. Michelle has worked in a unique niche of the financial industry for over 20 years now and even so, most people are unaware that these financial services are available to them in their time of need. Michelle and her sister, Marcia Lindsay started Elite Funeral Funding in February of 2016 and have grown the business exponentially over the past 6 years. “I have had a pretty diverse career path. From my early years in the hospitality industry to then working as a technical support representative for several years and then meeting and working with my mentor Hal Rosenberg, who introduced me to the funeral industry. I worked with Hal for over 10 years helping to build and maintain a company with sales over $50M annually at its peak.
Michelle’s Advice to Young Women
Don’t be afraid to step out on faith. Life will throw curveballs but instead of thinking about what you may have lost or what the setback might be… think about what lesson that situation is trying to teach you and learn from it. Don’t dwell in the negative space of the setback, instead use it as momentum to bring you through the next phase of your growth. Growth is always the goal, whether in mind, body, or financially. Set goals and continue reaching for them!
Marcia Lindsay Co-Owner
Elite Funeral Funding Her Story
Marcia is a co-owner of Elite Funeral Funding Group, Inc. She started the company in 2016 with her sister, Michelle, and has not looked back since. In her line of business, she focuses on helping families by relieving the financial burden after the loss of a loved one. Marcia worked her way up the corporate ladder to Management shortly after graduating high school, but she was not fulfilled. The higher she climbed, the less time she had to spend with her family; At that time, Corporate America was not very forgiving for single parents. Working 50-60 hour weeks combined with being a full-time mom became very challenging. For Marcia, owning her own business became the only option. It allowed her to make her own schedule and do things on her terms.
Marcia’s Advice to Young Women
Pursue your dreams! Fear has kept me from doing a lot of things in the past. As I got older, I realized it’s better to try and fail than to never try at all. Success does not come without setbacks. Life is full of ups and downs but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Get out there and make it happen!

VICKIE CARTWRIGHT CHOSEN TO LEAD BROWARD SCHOOLS PERMANENTLY By Terry Jaillet
B
roward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright will get the full-time job. The former Orange County school administrator was chosen by the Broward County School Board after an 8-1 vote in her favor. Lori Alhadeff was the only dissenting vote at a School Board Meeting on February 9. Cartwright has been the interim superintendent since her predecessor, Robert Runcie resigned from the role last year. She was chosen despite initially not being allowed to even apply for the job. The interim superintendent was initially not supposed to be eligible for the full-time role, but Cartwright gained the support of board members and, importantly, The Broward Teachers Union. “In the six months that she has served as interim superintendent, she has proven to be an intelligent and excellent leader with an ability to listen to and work with all constituencies,” said Teachers Union President Anna Fusco in a prepared statement. “She quickly gained a keen understanding of the district’s challenges and opportunities. I look forward to continuing
the positive and fruitful relationship we have created and to Dr. Cartwright’s long tenure as the leader of Broward County Public Schools.” The school board had narrowed the search to two finalists. Along with Cartwright was retired Air Force Colonel Michael Gaal. Gaal has held a number of leadership positions in large schools systems after his military service. He was never a teacher, however. Some board members pointed to this fact as a reason to prefer Cartwright. “The beginning of my career is one that is truly based on relationships and the value of understanding the importance in ensuring that we put students first,” Cartwright told the board. “During my 7th-grade year, unfortunately, my family did become homeless.” “I am humbled. I am honored,” Cartwright said after the vote, “One of my initial interests at this point is really going out and recruiting the best-qualified candidates for those (key) positions.” Alhadeff explained the reasoning for her vote for Gaal, saying, “he was the stronger leader
in totality, as far as being able to question the status quo, hold people accountable.” Cartwright will have her work cut out for in managing the nation’s sixth-largest school system. There are currently vacancies in several key management positions.

Eagle Ridge Teacher Seema Naik Named Teacher of the Year
E
agle Ridge Elementary School Teacher Seema Naik was honored as Teacher of the Year by Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). She joined Principal of the Year, Heilange Porcena from North Side Elementary School, Assistant Principal of the Year, Derek Gordon from Western High School and School-Related Employee of the Year, Kimberly Kummler from Manatee Elementary School in receiving honors at BCPS’s annual Caliber Awards. Each Year, BCPS recognizes the very best teachers, administrators, and employees at its Caliber Awards. The school district is the largest employer in the county, employing more than 34,000 people, making the recognition truly an honor. Seema Naik, Teacher of the Year Teacher of the year, Seema Naik started her career in education 16 years ago – first as a volunteer so she could be involved in her daughters’ education. She then applied to become a cafeteria aide and teacher assistant before becoming a primary grade teacher. “Anyone can take money from your hands, but not your education.” These powerful words spoken by Naik’s parents many years ago shaped her philosophy on education. Naik believes all children have the right to quality education to empower them with critical thinking skills, collaboration strategies and self-confidencw to reach their goals. “The next generation requires teachers to foster a desire for lifelong learning because of

By Terry Jaillet the current technology-dominated era,” said Naik. As part of a family of musicianyous from India, Naik uses her passion for music to enhance her instruction to create songs and chants with lyrics that incorporate lesson content for her students. “In my experience as a school leader, there are only a few teachers I would consider to be a pioneer. It is clear-cut in my mind that Mrs. Naik is a STEM pioneer in the education world,” said Eagle Ridge Elementary Principal Lindsey Sierra. “She has led Eagle Ridge in creating new STEM opportunities for our students.” Heilange Porcena, Principal of the Year Heilange, a 26-year veteran at BCPS, commented, “We have the power to change a life.” Born in Haiti, Porcena migrated to the United States at the age of six, unable to speak English. This did not deter her from fulfilling her dreams and aspirations. Through her leadership in education, Porcena enjoys the privilege of being able to give back to her community and show that dreams do become reality. “Ms. Porcena passionately pursues excellence to ensure the academic and social emotional needs for each one of her scholars,” said her director Jacquelyn Haywood. “She inspires her staff, serves as a mentor, and encourages teachers and students to become leaders.” Derek Gordon, Assistant Principal of the Year Assistant Principal of the year, Derek Gordon is one of only two assistant principals in BCPS who started his career as a visual arts teacher. A strong
believer in personalizing the learning experience, Gordon’s educational philosophy includes a partnership with his students. Overseeing the Exceptional Student Education Department at Western High School, he ensures that his most vulnerable students are learning and succeeding. “The next generation needs to have the ability to adapt to new situations and master new tools and technologies quickly.” Kimberly Kummler, School-Related Employee of the Year “Children are like snowflakes, each one unique in their own way of learning,” said Kimberly Kummler, school nurse at Manatee Bay Elementary School for the last four years. Kummler embraces uniqueness and focuses on their individual strengths when educating the next generation. Knowing the importance of mental health in the growth and development of students, she is humbled to work with students to provide the best learning opportunity for each student. “Nurse Kim quickly earned a reputation of being extremely flexible, caring and fun, but also very thorough,” said Manatee Bay Elementary Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn. “When COVID-19 presented itself, she rose to a new level of support and was extremely knowledgeable, supportive and visible.”

ASK THE SHERIFF
DEVELOPING HOPE By Sheriff Gregory Tony
H
eather Echaniz, a job developer for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Day Reporting and Reentry Division (DRRD), remembers all the former inmates she has helped, but one client stands out. When she worked with the client, he was recovering from alcohol addiction and needed a job. This assignment was especially challenging because he was on the verge of relapsing. Nevertheless, Heather persisted. With her help, the client successfully fought his addiction and found suitable employment. His employer was so impressed with the quality of his work they returned to DRRD to find additional employees. Heather works every day with a diverse group of clients, all with different needs, strengths, and struggles. With her support, she works toward leading them down the path of success. “Many people do not realize how much getting a job means for these individuals,” Heather said. “Making a difference in their lives truly makes a difference in mine.” Each year, thousands of inmates held in
prison facilities throughout the state return to Broward County, and nearly 62 percent commit new crimes within three years of being released. BSO’s DRRD is working toward changing that statistic by providing the reintegration support needed to succeed during the transition. The program is also designed to assist individuals within the Broward County jail system with community reentry. The program begins during an individual’s sentence and includes an individual case plan. Upon release, the program focuses on removing the barriers to successful reentry and provides the support needed to restructure their lives and become self-sufficient. The work Heather and the rest of the DRRD division does not only reduce crime; it provides hope and support for individuals trying to reenter society and reclaim their lives. In recognition of Women’s History Month, it is an honor to highlight Heather’s great work. She is one of the many strong, compassionate, and dedicated women of BSO who lead, protect and serve this community every day. Thank you for making Broward County a better place to call home.

he beginning of March is significant as a legislator, as it reminds me that we are in our final weeks of the regularly scheduled 2022 Florida Legislative Session, which ends March 11, 2022. These last few weeks are critical for us to safeguard our appropriation requests and legislation we sponsor, ensuring it continues to move through the process. Once session is adjourned and the gavel is sounded, everything that is passed gets sent to the Governor, at which time he has the option to approve or veto appropriations and legislation. After session, I enjoy being back home in the district so I can update everyone on our progress. In the meantime, I will continue to advocate for the priorities that are important to you. Thank you to everyone who filled out our pre-session survey and who contacted my office on legislation. I appreciate your input! March is Women’s History Month. For me, there is personal significance in spotlighting Women’s History Month by recognizing and celebrating the contributions women have made to our country and history. Our office is once again holding a Women’s History essay contest for students in grades K-12 in District 96. To participate, please send us your essay of 500 words or less about a woman who you look up to or who you feel has made a positive contribution to our society. We want to know why this woman is special to you. It could be someone from history or someone you know today. Email us the essay to Brianna.schofield@myfloridahouse.gov with “Essay Contest” in the subject line. Please include your name, email, and phone number. The deadline to submit an essay is March 20th. We will have three winners from grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. As a Boston native of Irish descent and a former Irish step dancer, I would be remiss in not wishing a Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all who celebrate. I am looking forward to hearing some Irish music and enjoying some shepherd’s pie at Runyon’s for their annual St. Paddy’s Day celebration on March 17. March also includes daylight savings time. This is a great opportunity to change our smoke detector batteries. It is also the start of spring, and that means Spring Break. So, to all the students, families, and teachers, I wish you a nice and relaxing Spring Break. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you in the Florida House. My office is here to help wherever we can, so please reach out at 954-956-5600 or HDIST096@myfloridahouse. gov with any questions or concerns you may have. Our office will have upcoming town halls and updates on the legislative session. You can email us at HDIST096@myfloridahouse.gov to be added to our email list for newsletters and other updates. Additionally, you can follow my updates on social media on Facebook at @RepChrisineHunschofsky and on Twitter at @ chunschofsky. As always, I look forward to hearing from you!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE By Vice Mayor Ken Cutler
I
want to take this opportunity to thank Mayor Rich Walker for the chance to write this month’s column and my fellow commissioners for selecting me to serve as Vice Mayor this term. Last month was a difficult one for our community remembering those we have lost and the horrors of February 14, 2018, but we are Parkland Strong and resilient. I want to commend the communities of both Parkland and Coral Springs and our wonderful residents for all of their selfless acts of service in the name of those who were injured or no longer here with us. For those who will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month on Thursday, March 17th, have a great time but please do so responsibly. We are still in the process of overcoming COVID and the combination of celebration and the need for social distancing and protection can be challenging. There

are plenty of car services, even services that will tow your vehicle home, in Broward County so take advantage and be safe. March is the lead-up to Springtime activities and beyond. Lots of kids playing ball, the Parkland Farmers’ Market is still ongoing this month on the 6th (Community Awareness and Business Expo) and 20th (Health and Wellness) and lots of other great things to do. The new Parkland Playbook is available online for activities from January through May 2022 and it provides a host of activities for all age groups, so check it out at cityofparkland.org/prec for more details. Don’t forget, Parkland’s Summer Camp registration will begin March 7, 2022. Also, be sure to catch the March 25th Movie in the Park at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park. A special family tribute and celebration of life for Parkland’s soccer league founder and coaching superstar Peter Gado will also
be held at the Amphitheatre on March 12th. The City Staff and Commission are looking forward to our Strategic Planning which will take place next month on April 10th. This is very important. The City Commission and members of the City’s Executive Leadership team meet to develop strategic goals for the upcoming Fiscal Year. With the guidance of a moderator, elected officials and staff discuss and rank current challenges and opportunities and then determine policy actions to support the City’s goals and guiding principles for the upcoming fiscal year. Last year’s Strategic Plan is available online at: cityofparkland. org/budget. Your input is extremely important to us, so do not hesitate to share your thoughts with your commissioners. Be safe, be healthy, and be happy.
