It is the Beginning of the Pandemic’s End
O
n Thursday, March 11, President Joe Biden signed into law “The American Rescue Plan Act.” After signing the legislation, he addressed the nation, highlighting that COVID-19 vaccines will soon be available to all adults. As a community news publication, we steer clear of politics, and we will do so regarding the legislation and the President’s policies. We see that day as a watershed moment; it was the beginning of the pandemic’s end. The COVID pandemic has affected us all in different ways. Many of us lost loved ones. Our families lived isolated from each other for over a year. Kids stayed home from school for up to three semesters. Small businesses, especially ones where people gather, have suffered. As our collective immunity becomes broader, it will be more critical than ever to support our local communities. The character of where we live is more threatened now than ever before. National brands and Internet retailers are efficient and predictable but make communities indistinguishable from one another. Let’s make a point to support locally-owned restaurants and venues. Go to a sporting event at a local high school or go for a walk in one of our fabulous parks. As we come out of our COVID hibernation, take stock of all the great things living in South Florida has to offer. It is a new beginning. Sincerely,
Terry & Christy Jaillet

A NEW BRAND OF LUXURY LIVING Is Coming to Hollywood Beach!
16 / Our AprilCity 2021 Hollywood / OurCityMedia.com / March 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
FEATURE STORY
Hollywood’s Newest Luxury
WATERFRONT COMMUNITY is Now Taking Reservations
H
ollywood’s newest waterfront condominium will soon break ground and its future residents are already looking forward to the beachside lifestyle this luxury community will afford. Located on A1A on Hollywood’s beautiful central beach, Beachside Residences will feature 36 one, two or three bedroom luxury condominiums and four-bedroom townhouses. They are now accepting reservations for new units. The development is perfectly situated just off of Hollywood’s famed Broadwalk where unique shopping and dining experiences are a short walk away. Residents enjoy ocean and Intracoastal views Roger Lohse, with REMAX 5 Star Realty, is leading sales for the project. We caught up with him to learn more about the exciting development. Tell us about Beachside Residences. Beachside Residences is a truly unique, state of the art property in Hollywood. Each of our residences will be designed by the Italian design firm Minotti and delivered with flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances that are top-of-the-line. The decor will include the finest Italian finishes. In addition to being steps away from the beach, residents will enjoy a number of amenities, including a private, heated swimming pool and a fitness center. The first two levels of the building will house our parking garage. One and two bedroom units will be assigned one space while three and four bedroom units will be assigned two spaces. And, of course, the views will be spectacular. Sounds great, what is the price range for the units? Our prices range from $600,000 up to $2.5 Million. Tell us about the location. Beachside Residences is located just 10 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, close to several local shopping and dining destinations and is in the heart of central Hollywood Beach. Whether you are looking for a beach-side getaway or thinking about downsizing with a move to the beach, Beachside Residences promises to provide the perfect lifestyle.
Are you offering incentives for potential buyers to act now? Yes! In fact, this is essentially a no-risk opportunity to get in at pre-construction prices. There is a $25,000 reservation deposit that is 100% refundable until we begin construction this summer. Once we go to contact, our deposit structure will be as follows: 25% due at signing, 10% due when the slab of the building is poured and 5% due when the roof is completed. The remaining balance will be due at closing. I’m interested! When do you expect construction to begin? We will break ground this summer and expect delivery in the fall of 2022.

Regardless of what anyone tells you about your career choices, do not let that scare you away from what you truly want to work towards and accomplish. There will be good days and bad days. Make sure to always appreciate the good days and learn from the bad days.
“It is pure mythology that women cannot perform as well as men in science, engineering and mathematics. In my experience, the opposite is true: women are often more adept and patient at untangling complex problems, multitasking, seeing the possibilities in new solutions and winning team support for collaborative action.” ― Weili Dai

2021 PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE
SPECIAL FEATURE
Making the Grade –
Choosing the Best Private School for Your Child
W
hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities.
Find a School With Good Extracurriculars
The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from well-known private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success.
Prioritizes Academics & Education
Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge’s Advanced International 22 / April 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school know how to set their students up for success. Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well.
With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education. Academics That Are Challenging, High Passing Rates on AP Exams
Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student different credits at certain colleges.
Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.
Guidance Counselors That Care About Your Child’s Future
Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.

FLORIDA PREPAID ANNOUNCES ANNUAL OPEN ENROLLMENT COLLEGE SAVINGS PLANS START AT $45/MONTH
A
s families continue to recover from the pandemic, Florida Prepaid College Board is starting its annual Open Enrollment with five affordable plans starting at $45 per month, each built for flexibility and guaranteed by the State of Florida. The Florida Prepaid College Board is encouraging Floridians to plan for a brighter tomorrow by finding a plan that meets their budget and goals. Florida families last year purchased more than 50,000 plans, committing to their children’s future even as the pandemic hit. In a recent study conducted by the Board, more than 90 percent of Florida parents say college is more important than ever or just as important in the wake of COVID-19. “As challenging as things continue to be, we are encouraged to see how many Florida families are looking to brighter days ahead and the importance of a college education,” said Board Chairman John D. Rood. “We hope that every family will consider enrolling in a Prepaid Plan, which offers them secure, guaranteed and affordable college savings options. Prepaid Plans offer certainty in an uncertain world.” Prepaid Plans are designed to help families maximize their college savings by picking a plan to fit their savings goals, and locking in the future cost of college for less. And the earlier a family starts saving for a child’s college education, the less they need to save each month. This allows families to start saving early so their child’s college tuition is ready and waiting for them. 2021 Florida Teacher of the Year Krista Stanley attended Florida State University using a Prepaid Plan, and encourages families to save early for their children, just as her parents did. “I am grateful for this program and the flexibility it offers to parents across the State of Florida,” said Stanley. “Florida Prepaid changed my life and allowed me to be financially prepared before, during, and after college.” If a child attends an out-of-state or private college, a Prepaid Plan will pay the same amount as it would pay at a public college or university in Florida. Every Prepaid Plan is guaranteed by the State of Florida, so you can never lose your investment, and a child has up to 10 years after high school graduation to use the plan. With Plans starting at $45/month for a 1-Year Florida University Plan for a newborn, there is no better time to start saving. The Board also offers five other Prepaid Plans, including the most popular 4-Year Florida University Plan, as well as the 1-Year University Plan. Open Enrollment runs February 1 through April 30. What else has changed with body procedures in modern plastic surgery?
Modern cosmetic surgery technologies, procedures and treatments are making it faster and easier to look and feel our best at the various stages in our lives, thus decreasing the postoperative discomfort and downtime. Today women, especially, feel more attuned to taking care of themselves from the perspective of mind, body and soul. A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach towards surgery can use complementary natural techniques to enhance postsurgical healing. Holistic and integrative preparation prior to surgery usually results in a quicker, better and less painful healing process. Because a body makeover encompasses many aspects

of surgically transforming and renewing the body, adjunct pre- and post-procedure modalities may include working with a nutritionist for continued overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, meditation and yoga for stress reduction, lymphatic
drainage massage, homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing and organic body skincare. A surgeon’s goal is to produce naturallooking results that will bring your body into balance, thus helping you feel reconnected with your physical self, and to experience a healthy form of renewal. Getting the mind and the body working together pre- and post-surgery is a transformative and lasting experience for those ready to undertake this journey.

very Sunday morning, when Pompano Beach District Captain Martin Hedelund’s twin boys were young, he would take them on drives around Broward County, showing them various landmarks and sights. Captain Hedelund would do all the talking; Dalton and Martin Jr. sat and listened. They were four years old and nonverbal - a developmental delay caused by autism. Today, Captain Hedelund’s boys are 14. Both can speak and express themselves in different ways. They remember those trips with dad, sometimes down to the date on which they happened. “It has been cataloged in their minds all these years,” Captain Hedelund says. “While the twins are aware of what is going on, sometimes they just can’t tell us that they know. We have faced challenges as a family, but with the blessings of early diagnosis, curriculum-based learning and having two caring parents, Dalton and Martin Jr. have exceeded expectations.” As a veteran law enforcement officer, Captain Hedelund became better at his job from his personal experiences with autism. He learned how to read body language better and pick up on important social cues. His wife, Margi, has

dedicated her life to spreading awareness about autism. She is a board member of the Autism Society of Florida. She travels across the state, sometimes with her sons, to teach first responders about autism awareness and how to communicate more effectively with individuals on the spectrum. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we understand the importance of autism awareness in public safety. We have instituted proactive programs and initiatives and continue to provide specialized training to assist our first responders in serving this population better. Our most progressive initiative is the implementation of the BSO Cares program. The program provides first responders with important information about persons with disabilities so we can respond more appropriately to calls for service. Participation in the program is voluntary and available to anyone who resides in or frequently visits Broward County with a special needs diagnosis. To learn more about the program, or to register yourself or a loved one, please visit www.sheriff.org/BSOCares. We also continue to ensure more first responders receive Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. This unique training enhances the understanding of the signs and symptoms
of someone with behavioral health issues. It also helps provide a more prepared and aware approach when interacting with an individual on the spectrum. BSO is honored to have some incredible community partnerships with organizations such as Surfers for Autism and Autism in Flight with JetBlue. Surfers for Autism is a community event that gives individuals with autism a chance to learn to surf. Autism in Flight provides a full airport experience for children with autism and their families. They go through check-in and ticketing, security, boarding and a taxiway ride on the tarmac. The program aims to make the prospect of a commercial flight less intimidating. At BSO, we will continue to work hard to further develop these essential programs and partnerships. Our goal is to ensure all persons are served with respect and protected in the safest possible manner. Service Equals Reward

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood/Aventura, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers,
such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

pril starts off the second half of the 60-day 2021 Legislative Session. This session has been extremely active. Thousands of bills have been filed and while every bill is important, only a few hundred will become law. During these 30 days, a state budget must be voted on in addition to the many bills that will affect all Floridians. As we head to the conclusion of the session, this is a time when legislators are scrambling to get bills moved through committees in the hopes that they be voted on the floor. During the committee process, amendments are made sometimes to make a bad bill better or to strengthen a good bill. It is a time when debate on the floor is so vital in order to argue the merits of a piece of legislation that greatly impacts our constituents. I encourage you to please visit www.myfloridahouse.gov to see which bills have been filed and which are moving. You can also track them and see which committee is voting on them next. Please feel free to email my office at HDIST096@myfloridahouse. gov to voice your concerns on any of these bills. Let us not forget that Earth Day is Thursday, April 22. The legacy of this day reminds us of the many laws that have been passed to protect our climate and environment. In Florida we are especially impacted by environmental issues such as rising sea levels, flooding, water issues, or more frequent and intense storms. The Florida Legislature is working on tackling several of these issues through laws that would mitigate the impacts of sea level rise while investing in Everglades restoration and allowing cities to reduce the use of plastics within their city limits. In our own homes we can make a difference by reducing our water and electricity usage, making use of reusable containers and bottles, composting, and recycling effectively thereby lowering contamination. I personally want to wish a Happy Easter and Passover to all who celebrate. As we continue to cope with the effects of COVID-19 please visit http://floridahealthcovid19.gov/ for updated information or contact my office for help. I want to thank all of you who have reached out to me with concerns, comments, questions, and support. THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
I
APRIL MESSAGE
n the blink of an eye Spring is upon us. With an increase in COVID-19 vaccines available at more distribution points and greater eligibility for the general population, we are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel from this public health crisis. As a result, we began looking at planning for in person events and meetings. In April, our Commission Meetings will be held as a hybrid, with some in-person and others attending virtually. Members of the Commission, key city staff and those who are being honored, will be inside of Commission Chambers at City Hall. Since social distancing requirements limits space inside of chambers, residents are encouraged to participate by attending the meetings remotely. You can learn more about viewing options at coralsprings.org/citytv. The April meetings are scheduled for the 7th and 21st at 6:30 p.m. In the City of Coral Springs, we are incredibly fortunate to have one of the best Public Safety Communications Division’s in the state, if not the nation. During the second week of April, we honor the men and women who serve our community as call-takers and dispatchers, in celebration of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. We are grateful to have such dedicated staff, who are passionate about protecting and serving our residents, and ensuring effective communication with their colleagues in police and fire. If you have ever called our non-emergency number or had to dial 9-1-1, you know they are the lifeline to vital services, and for that, we are truly grateful for their service. Also deserving of recognition this month, and all year long, are our amazing volunteers who we celebrate during National Volunteer Week from April 18 to 24. Our city has 430 monthly active volunteers, who dedicate their time, talent and compassion to the Coral Springs community. Follow the city’s social platforms as we highlight the men, women and young adults making a difference in our community. We invite you to join us as we celebrate Mother Earth during our annual EarthFest plant distribution event on April 24, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Sportsplex. For details, visit our website www. coralsprings.org/events. The city is excited to announce the expansion of our dropoff recycling program for residents who would like to ensure non-contaminated recycling. A recycling container is now located at Mullins Park (2501 Coral Springs Drive) next to the Coral Springs Gymnasium and is open for drop off 24/7. This new collection point is in addition to the recycling option at the Waste Transfer Station, which is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m. (12600 Wiles Road). The container only allows for the drop off of plastic material with the number 1 or 2 on the containers, metal and aluminum cans, newspaper and mixed paper, and broken-down cardboard. We ask residents who utilize this container to please refrain from contaminating it with non-recyclable materials.

appy April Parkland. With April upon us, our City Commission enthusiastically steps into our Strategic Planning Session. This is an opportunity that enables our commission an ideal setting to discuss the multitude of ideas presented by our residents. We utilize these subject matters to set the stage for our Budget for the next year (which begins in October). We also set the stage for years moving forward. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to collaborate as a team and discuss important things together, ultimately setting out a course for our Beautiful City. We always welcome ideas and look forward to these valuable discussions. Unfortunately, last year with the onset of Covid-19, our strategic planning session was canceled. However, we continued our progress with capital projects that will be happening later this year such as the drainage repairs in Pine Trails Park for Fields 6, 7, 8, and 9. April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. We need to be mindful of the multitude of

stresses impacted upon our youth growing up in today’s unprecedented environment. The combination of social media, the pandemic, and an overall decrease in personal interaction can be incredibly overwhelming. This is stressful for all of us, but even more so for our children. As a community, we can encourage and motivate one other with positive relationships, kind hearts, support, and love. Child Abuse Prevention Guidelines:
• Never discipline your child when your anger is out of control. • Participate in your child’s activities and get to know your child’s friends. • Teach your child to use their voice to allow them to prevent abuse in their own life. • Listen to them and believe what they say. • Be aware of changes in your child’s behavior or attitude and inquire into it

While our fundraising might look different right now, our passion to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer is unchanged. “During this difficult time, cancer won’t stop, and neither will we,” said event lead Megan Mila. “Relay For Life is all about togetherness, and the safety of our patients, survivors and volunteers is a top priority.
