O
n March 27th, Broward County issued its Shelter-in-Place order, effectively closing restaurants, sporting venues, parks, stores, gyms, and virtually every other public gathering place around. We were encouraged to stay at home. And, for the most part, that is exactly what we all did. Businesses temporarily closed, play-dates were canceled, dentist visits postponed, in-person visits with grandparents were suspended and birthday parties were moved online. As a community, we should be proud. South Florida went from being seen as the next “hot spot,” for the Coronavirus, to an area where the outbreak was largely contained. This was no small feat for a region that welcomes so many visitors from all around the world. Now things are reopening. To protect our lives and the economy, each of us must continue to do some common sense things to make sure the virus stays in check. If you don’t feel well, stay at home. Continue to wash your hands several times a day and whenever you go out. Limit close interpersonal contact when possible. Routinely clean things people frequently touch like doorknobs, steering wheels, and countertops. And, if you must interact with multiple people or cannot physically distance yourself, please continue to wear a mask. If we are smart and responsible, we will be able to get a large part of our daily routines back while a vaccine is being developed. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our loved ones to do what we can to prevent another shut-down. The hard part is over, now it’s time for us all to follow-through and kick COVID’s butt!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
At Broward Health: Being Healthy Starts Here
I
f you’re like most people, your health has been on pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, however, is a new day and your journey to being healthy starts here. As Broward Health resumes medical procedures and surgical cases, caregivers are ready to provide you with the exceptional care you know in a safe environment that has additional measures of protection for all those who seek care. “Countless South Floridians had their medical care postponed due to the pandemic, and we have carefully laid the groundwork to resume a limited scope of procedures for those patients,” said Gino Santorio, president and CEO of Broward Health. “The health and safety of our caregivers and patients is our number one priority, and all necessary measures are being taken to help us safely resume elective procedures.” Andrew Ta, chief medical officer of Broward Health, added that patients considering coming to the hospital for care don’t need to be afraid of contracting coronavirus. “Heart attacks, strokes and other emergent conditions don’t wait for a pandemic to end,” Ta said. “If you are experiencing a medical emergency, you should
dial 911 and come to the hospital. With the steps that have been put in place, you will receive excellent care in a safe environment.” Numerous safety measures have been introduced by the health system for the protection of patients, caregivers and guests. COVID-19 health screenings of all those entering a Broward Health facility, universal masking and rapid testing of all inpatients are just a few of the steps taken to help ensure a safe environment. To further safeguard the hospital’s sterilization, the system has added enhanced sanitation measures, such as electrostatic spraying of Bioesque botanical disinfectant that kills COVID-19 in just four minutes. Rapid testing has been implemented across the system, allowing COVID-19 patients to more quickly receive necessary care while being isolated from others for the protection of non-COVID related patients. Your doctors are also equally committed to taking steps to make certain you are safe. As physicians reschedule postponed procedures, they will use
guidelines from the American College of Surgeons to determine if patients qualify based on their individual needs. Appointments will be scheduled to allow for social distancing in shared spaces, such as the waiting room. “Being healthy starts here,” said Andrew Ta, chief medical officer of Broward Health. “Whether you are in need of a health screening, fighting a chronic condition or require a surgical procedure, Broward Health is here for you to begin your road to recovery.”

Top 10 Ways to Stay Connected to Your Older Loved Ones During Quarantine
W
ith seniors at most risk to catch and become ill from Coronavirus, Lisa Cini, aging expert and author of BOOM: The Baby Boomers Guide to Leveraging Technology, so that you can Preserve Your Independent Lifestyle & Thrive provides her top tricks to stay connected to your loved ones at this time. “It’s much more than the occasional phone call,” says Cini. “There are so many options to both stay connected and feel loved during this time. What can seem divisive can often pull people closer together.” Find Lisa’s top tips below: 1. Set up check-in times that are convenient for everyone. You can do this with Skype, Facetime, Zoom, Loop, WhatsApp, & WeChat. If possible, do a video call as it’s better to see a smile and easier for those with hearing loss. 2. Set up a group text with your family. This is great fun and keeps you all connected and in the loop. 3. If they have a wellness device (Fitbit, Garmin, Apple watch, Kardia, etc.), share their wellness data, and set up alert notifications. This will help to stop worrying and also give your loved one a nudge if they haven’t been active enough. 4. Set up a time to do a 10-minute group exercise,

even if its only chair exercising. It will help to keep the blood flowing, which improves brain function, reduces depression, and improves the immune system. 5. Game together! Words with friends and online video games (AARP has tons) are great to show your competitive side. Games can be as simple as tic tac toe or building entire cities with Minecraft or doing a flight simulator. 6. Create a watch party for your favorite tv shows or movies and group text, video chat, or message on Facebook. 7. Write a handwritten note or card. It’s not done much anymore, and it will remind them of a much simpler time beyond electronics. 8. Interview them with questions about their childhood and early 20’s. 9. No one wants to eat alone, so video chat during
meals! Creating a virtual “family dining” experience where everyone can share their day, laugh, and reconnect is a great mood booster. 10. Choose a book to read together and discuss it twice a week.

BCPS Congratulates VEX and FIRST Robotics Teams for Outstanding Seasons
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates the District’s VEX and FIRST Robotics school teams and coaches for their outstanding results during the 2019/20 school year. The following schools qualified for prestigious world championship competitions this year, prior to being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. To qualify for the world championships, the school teams had to excel and win top honors during state and/or regional competitions. BCPS teams qualifying for VEX Robotics World Championships: Lloyd Estates Elementary School, Manatee Bay Elementary School, Silver Palms Elementary School, Eagle Ridge Elementary School, and Coral Springs Middle School BCPS teams qualifying for FIRST Robotics World Championships: Dillard High School, West Broward High School, and Cypress Bay High School In addition, Dillard High School teacher Steve Szoke and Dillard High alumnus Arefin Bari are being honored by FIRST Robotics as Regional Volunteers of the Year. They were selected due to their coaching and mentoring of the Dillard High SigmaC@ts FIRST Robotics team and hosting their annual off-season regional Mission Mayhem competition every fall.
About VEX and FIRST Robotics ▸ VEX Robotics provides tools to inspire the problem solvers of tomorrow through the use of education robotic solutions. Its goal is to create engaging, affordable and powerful solutions that immerse students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through the excitement of building and programming educational robotics kits. VEX Robotics competitions bring STEM skills to life by tasking teams of students with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April. ▸ FIRST Robotics combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology
to create the ultimate sport for the mind. Teams compete head-to-head on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built, and programmed. FIRST Robotics addresses inequities in STEM. Supported by generous donors, grants are awarded each year to schools and other community organizations throughout the United States and Canada that serve young people whose access to STEM education and enrichment might otherwise be limited. To learn more about BCPS robotics opportunities for students, visit browardschools.com/stem.

Broward Teacher and Cancer Survivor Delivers School Supplies to Quarantined Pre-K Students
A
Tamarac Elementary pre-K teacher who is battling cancer selflessly celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week by delivering supplies to her quarantined students on Tuesday, May 5. Passino, who recently completed her final round of chemotherapy, led a festive car caravan and surprised students with much-needed supplies thanks to a Broward Education Foundation and Office Depot COVID-19 Virtual Learning Teacher Supply Drive grant. This generous Broward County Public Schools teacher and her colleagues opted to take time out and help her special students during this challenging time instead of utilizing the funds to purchase remote-learning tools for her virtual classroom. Now, when she teaches a virtual class, the children will all have the essential supplies to create interactive craft projects together. When asked if
she was worried about making deliveries as she is immunocompromised, she said, “Not at all, I will wear a mask and can’t wait to see all my kiddo’s faces,” said Jennifer Passino. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Broward Education Foundation and Office Depot Virtual Learning Teacher Supply Drive raises funds to help teachers purchase needed distance learning tools and supplies such as headphones, microphones, whiteboards, and software so they may keep students engaged, focused and learning. To make a contribution, please visit teachersupplydrive.com About Broward Education Foundation Broward Education Foundation supports Broward County Public Schools and serves as a catalyst for educational excellence by providing teacher grants to fund the development of innovative curriculum that advances Pre K-12 achievement; vitally needed school supplies for Title I school students and scholarships for qualified high school seniors. Established in
1983, the non-profit Broward Education Foundation contributes more than $3 million to Broward County schools annually. In 2018, responding to the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy, Broward Education Foundation initiated a GoFundMe campaign, established the official Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund, and raised $10.5M for victims’ families, survivors and those impacted. Broward Education Foundation is proven agile, adept and responsive to shifting needs in education and our community. Five Fun Games to Keep You and Your Family Active and Entertained
K
eeping your family happy, active, and entertained is a hard task in this day and age. With technology and screens as most kids’ go-to entertainment, parents need a fresh and entertaining way to keep their kids outdoors and active. Our City Media has gathered five of our favorite outdoor games to share with you.
1. Rollors- Offers family fun for all ages. Kids spend hours outdoors perfecting their game. The game is like a combination of Bocce Ball and Horseshoes. Each player has a chance to show off their skill as they roll wooden discs to the opposing goal post. Points are awarded based on where and how the discs land. Each game comes packaged in a handy carrying case, making it easy to bring to the park or the beach. www.rollors.com MSRP $49.95
3. Corn Hole- If you grew up in the South, then you have probably played a game or two of Corn Hole. The picnic, poolside, and tailgating classic is loved by millions. Players take turns throwing 16-ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. The platforms are frequently decorated in a family’s favorite team or college colors. We got ours at www.allamericantailgate.com unfinished and we customized it to our liking (another fun family project). NCAA regulationsized boards retail from $110 to $250 depending on how fancy you want it. 4. Spike Ball- Some say that if volleyball and foursquare had a baby it’d be named Spikeball. Spikeball is our family’s goto for lawn and beach fun. It is so popular, that there are now 100s of “round net” tournaments worldwide. www.spikeball.com Kits start at $59.99 5. Wiffle Ballmay be America’s original backyard pastime. Similar to baseball/softball this classic game is great for small groups, yards of almost any size or shape, and a whole bunch of trash talk. A bat and ball combo can be purchased for under $5.00 making this fun family game a steal. www.wiffle.com Starting at $5
2. CROSSNET - Have you ever imagined combining two of your favorite childhood games? Crossnet does just that! Four square merges with volleyball for an entirely new game! Our families loved the competition. Crossnet can be played indoors or out and takes just minutes to set up on grass, sand, or a gym floor! Adjustable heights make it great for all ages! available on www. crossnetgame.com MSRP $149.99 OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY | JUNE 2020 17

Managing Mental Health During COVID-19 Telemedicine Can Help BY NANCY EAGLETON any people are understandably feeling anxious and stressed during this COVID19 pandemic. It is valid to want to talk to someone, says Rachel Rohaidy, M.D., a psychiatrist with Baptist Health South Florida, and yet social distancing has created barriers to obtaining support from family, friends and coworkers. If left untreated, anxiety and depression can worsen and have long-term effects on your health. The good news is, mental health counseling is more accessible, convenient and affordable than ever before, thanks to telemedicine.
M
It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and this year’s campaign, You Are Not Alone, reminds people that now, more than ever, the mental health community is coming together to make connection possible during a climate of physical distancing.

org, which assists in supplying healthcare workers with medical-grade personal protective equipment (PPE). The 501c3 was started in 2014 by Hanna Guttentag, Stacey Gringauz and, Sofia Rothenberg. The group now includes local girls Gabby Fisher and Zoe Weissman. Their founding
premise was simply to make the world a better place by raising money for charity while doing something that they enjoyed. The group started selling bracelets, but has since expanded into other items, and now masks. Notably, 3 Heart Strings has donated more than $180,000 to the victims and families impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The new face masks come in a variety of different patterns. The girls believe they are among the most comfortable, adjustable, and versatile masks available. They are
made with stretchable fabric and are machine washable. They are not, however, appropriate for medical workers. 3 Heart Strings also offers bracelets, posters, and yard signs that can be personalized bringing a smile to the recipients’ faces. All of their profits are donated to a specifically chosen charity each month. Consider supporting these girls and their efforts to make this world a better place. Coronavirus & Parenting Plans/Time-Sharing Agreements: What You Need to Know
BRODZKI JACOBS
BY TAYANE M. OLIVEIRA, ESQ.
T
he COVID-19 virus took the world by storm and has unexpectedly worked its way into our everyday lives, creating new challenges for co-parenting families. This article will discuss some hurdles many families are facing and how to overcome them. With schools being closed for the unforeseeable future, public gatherings being restricted, and many people losing employment, parents must co-parent effectively in times of disruption without violating Court orders. The rapid onset of restrictions and recommendations regarding the pandemic is especially troubling for parents whose children travel between two households. This crisis is affecting everything, from daily decision-making for the children, to time sharing schedules, to ability to pay child support. Now more than ever, it is important for parents to communicate effectively and cooperate with each other in order to maximize the best interests of the children. So what should you do if disagreements regarding the children arise? Parents should always adhere to the current Court order set in place, but also be flexible and reasonable when working out time-sharing and exchange changes with the other parent. Parents must also use common sense and must not endanger the health and safety of their children. Parents who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who have been exposed to someone with the virus are in no position to demand the time-sharing schedule be followed. Judges have made it clear that they will put the health of children first. Many jurisdictions, including the tri-county area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, are under a shelter-in-place order with few exceptions. This does not mean that your children should not be exchanged between local households. But it does mean that children are not going to be put on airplanes or trains to travel to a distant parent. Make-up time-sharing should be offered to any parent missing out on time with their children because of this pandemic. If the children are out of school and it is “your day” per the parenting plan, it is your responsibility to arrange for childcare or e-schooling. Until there is a Final Judgment of Modification entered by the Court, the regular parenting plan schedule applies, and you should always default to that schedule if you cannot agree to alternate arrangements. While all parents should follow the CDC, local and state guidelines regarding protecting your health and the health of your children, it is important to note and accept that you cannot control the other parent and force them to abide by the rules being followed in your household. It is important to have open, reasonable and respectful discussions with the other parent, always remembering that any action taken today will likely have consequences tomorrow. Communicating with the other parent, coordinating your schedules, adjusting pick up times or places, and working together to adjust to the changes in your routine is the best way to do the right thing for your child and stay out of Court. Communication, flexibility, compromise, and a united motive to act in the best interest of your child is the key to avoiding unnecessary conflict. If all attempts at respectful communication and amicable agreements fail, there are still legal routes to pursue. Motions to enforce or modify the parenting plan can be filed. Substantial changes in circumstances, such as loss of employment, can trigger the need to modify your parenting plan and/or child support. This is all uncharted legal territory and only time will tell how Courts will decide these issues moving forward, but Brodzki Jacobs is here to give expert advice and guide you through these challenging times. Uncertainty around COVID-19 is unsettling but our team is up and running with our extensive use of technology and 100% ready to serve you and your legal needs.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY t is hard to believe that another school year is already ending. It has been a strange time with virtual classes, ceremonies, high school graduations and college graduations. Normally this time of year I would be enjoying seeing so many happy faces with families and friends celebrating these special moments at honor society inductions, 5th grade celebrations, end of year awards ceremonies and graduations. Now, we are doing much of this virtually and adapting as best we can. Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, staff and volunteers for everything you do throughout the school year for our students. The last semester has been a challenge for everyone. Thank you to the teachers who worked hard to teach their students under these difficult circumstances. For all of the students, I am so sorry your end of the year will not be celebrated as we all expected it to be. It is absolutely normal and ok to feel a sense of loss for the in-person celebrations that never happened, but I hope you have also acknowledged the generous and thoughtful actions so many people in our community have done to celebrate you and make you feel special. Whether it was making signs, adopting graduates or organizing parades, the members of this community showed their compassion and resilience once again by showing up for our students. Thank you to everyone who participated in any small or large way to make a student feel special. Students, we are extremely proud of you and wish you the best of luck whether you are moving on to work, gap years, internships, college, high school, middle school or beginning elementary school, or moving on to your next grade. Father’s Day is Sunday June 21. Thank you so much to all the Dads out there for all you do for your families and for our community. We are very lucky to have so many Dads in our community who are always willing to lend a helping hand. We appreciate you and all you do to make a difference! Father’s Day can also be a difficult day for those who have lost their fathers and for those fathers who are missing their children. Please be mindful of one another and check in on your friends who may be hurting. I wish everyone a safe and wonderful summer. It will probably not be the summer you originally planned, but it is an opportunity to spend quality time with your family and to reconnect. Time moves by so quickly and life can change in a minute so take the time to appreciate the moments and look for the beauty around you. As always, feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with your questions or comments. I look forward to hearing from you!

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
