May is ALS Awareness Month

Feldman & Feldman counsellors at law, p.a.

elder law • special needs law estate planning & administration

I

n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-year-old son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. With your help, in the future children won’t have to watch their dad fade away. In memory of my brother, Michael.

oral Springs Charter School (CSCS) teacher Oscar Toro has a lot more going on than planning classes and grading tests. In fact, the high school teacher is the staff sponsor for two of the most active student organizations at the school: The High School Debate Team and the Environmental Awareness Club. He was chosen as CSCS’s nomination for Broward County’s annual “Staff of Character” Award. According to students on a Facebook post, Mr. Toro “teaches the ‘bigger picture’ and that the things we do daily will, in fact, impact

us in life.” His influence extends beyond the classroom and clubs. One project, in particular, has taught his students the impact that each and every one of us can have on our community. The Environmental Awareness Club, led by Mr. Toro, partnered with the City of Coral Springs to implement a new recycling program at the school. The program is already removing a substantial amount of recyclable materials from our landfills. Mr. Toro will be moving on to the final round, which will be announced on May 18. Regardless of the outcome of the competition, Coral Springs is lucky to have this exceptional teacher inspiring kids. Sponsored by the Sun-Sentinel and Publix, the Students and Staff of Character awards honor students and staff who were nominated by their schools for demonstrating outstanding character throughout the year which includes cooperation, responsibility, citizenship, kindness, respect, honesty, self-control, and tolerance.

The Eagles dominated the tournament en route to the championship, outsourcing opponents 43-4. The team was led by tournament MVP Chris Arroyo who threw five scoreless innings in addition to anchoring the offense. Arroyo, a future University of Florida Gator, came in to protect a two-run lead during the sixth inning of the championship game, throwing an inning and one-third of scoreless ball. Other All-Tournament standouts included leadoff hitter and center fielder Roman Anthony and First Baseman Christian Rodriguez. Anthony plans on playing ball at Ole Miss next year while Rodriguez plans to attend the University of Florida after his senior year next year. The Eagles batted .500 in the tournament and had an earned run average (ERA) below 1. Douglas defeated St. John Country Day School

Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register. Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. The initial release of the annual forecast was produced by Professor Michael M. Bell and Research Scientist Philip J. The pair issued a statement that read, in part, “Sea surface temperatures across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic are currently near average, while the Caribbean and subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are warmer than normal. We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.”

This will mark the first Parade appearance by the band. The Eagle Regiment will join the Parade to the call of “Let’s Have a Parade,” the iconic phrase that has signaled the start of every Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1924. Each year, the Macy’s Parade Band Committee looks for bands that have the stage presence, musical talents and marching abilities to captivate millions of live spectators and viewers nationwide. The Eagle Regiment was selected from more than 100 applicants as one of ten selected bands to march in the 97th edition of the annual holiday spectacle. The band will join the revelry along with other iconic Macy’s staples: floats, giant character balloons, clowns and superstar performers galore on Thanksgiving Day 2023, helping to create an unforgettable experience for millions. “The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Eagle Regiment exemplifies elegance, poise and musicianship on the marching field, setting them apart as one of the very finest bands in the state of Florida,” said Wesley Whatley, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade creative producer. “We look forward to hosting these talented students on our national stage as they march for the first time through the streets of New York City on Thanksgiving morning in the 2023 Macy’s Parade!” “Like millions of Americans, I grew up watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as an annual family tradition,” said Steve Rivero, band director, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. “I could not think of a greater honor for a marching band and am thrilled that the deserving students of the Eagle Regiment will have this experience. We cannot wait to show the world the wonderfully talented students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High!” “This is an outstanding opportunity for our students, and we are very proud of them for achieving this honor,” said Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie L.

Hurricane Season Begins June 1st BE PREPARED!

A

tlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 each year. It is no secret to South Florida residents that hurricanes are dangerous and can cause major damage. Storm surge, wind damage, and flooding can wreak havoc on property and pose major threats to people and pets. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the best way to minimize those risks is to be prepared.

Make an Emergency Plan

Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plans. Include the office, kids’ daycare, and anywhere else you frequent in your hurricane plans. Ensure your business has a continuity plan to continue operating when disaster strikes. Determine the best way to protect yourself,

family, and pets in the event of a major storm.

Recognize Warnings and Alerts

Stay informed during a hurricane threat by monitoring news channels, and paying attention to emergency information and alerts. Download the FEMA app to receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service.

Keep and Protect Important Documents

Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents are up to date. It is a good idea to have both digital and physical copies of these important documents, especially if you need to evacuate.

Make a Hurricane Kit

One of the best ways to prepare for a potential storm is to prepare a hurricane kit. A basic emergency supply kit could include:

(3 Gallons Per Family Member) ▸ Water Food (3 Days Worth) ▸ Non-Perishable Cell Phone Charger ▸ Battery-Powered NOAA Weather Radio with Extra Batteries ▸ Flashlight ▸ First Aid Kitwith Extra Batteries ▸ Whistle ▸ Package of Surgical Masks ▸ (To Filter Out Contaminated Air) Sheeting & Duct Tape ▸ Plastic Towelettes ▸ Moist Bags ▸ Garbage medications & glasses ▸ Prescription food ▸ Pet ▸ Personal hygiene items

urricane Season starts next month. This year’s season is expected to be “above average.”, Most South Floridians have experienced the rush to “get things done” when a major storm is on the way. There are a few things, however, that homeowners can do ahead of time to make that storm watch period a little bit less stressful.

1. Prune trees and clear yard debris

Hurricane-force winds can convert almost anything into a missile, capable of inflicting damage to homes, cars, and people. High winds can pick things like coconuts or dead branches and launch them at windows or people. It is a good idea to prune back dead branches and tree limbs that overhang homes. Dead and diseased plants should also be removed.

n May we celebrate Mother’s Day and all the wonderful mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and mother figures who have made a difference in our lives. They are the ones who we go to for support, help, advice, and consoling. Our world is a better place thanks to the love, care and support our mothers give. Unfortunately, Mother’s Day can also be a difficult day and a sad reminder for those who have lost their mothers or for mothers who have lost children. So, while you celebrate this day, please keep those who may be having a difficult time on Mother’s Day in your thoughts. The 2022 Legislative Session is over, as is the special session convened by the Governor. While we completed policy work in Tallahassee, the budget and legislation that passed can still be vetoed by the Governor. Although there were several controversial issues, bills addressing homeowner’s insurance and affordable housing never got across the finish line. Five bills that I sponsored/prime-cosponsored did pass. HB 559: Occupational Licensure of Military Spouses, HB 899: Mental Health of Students, HB 963: Funding for Sheriffs, HB 1421: School Safety, and HB 343: Mental Health Professional Licensure. We have truly enjoyed coming together once again for in-person events and community gatherings this spring. We look forward to welcoming our community for more in-person events in the months to come. This month, the Coral Springs Multi-Cultural Committee will host a National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 5th. Participants of all faiths are invited to join this candlelight ceremony. Many of our young residents have been sharpening their chess skills to take part in the Mayor’s Chess Challenge on Saturday, May 7th. This free event is open to all ages and skill levels. Additionally, the King of Chess Tournament will take place on Saturday, May 21st. Participants must register in advance. Visit CoralSprings.org/ events for more details. In partnership with the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, the city will host a Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30th to honor the brave men and women of our military who have given their lives in service to our nation.
