Celebrate Our International Cultures WITHOUT LEAVING THE CITY!

20 / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com ■ COMMUNITY NEWS

J oin your neighbors as the City of Coral Springs brings Italian culture and food to your community.

The signature annual International Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 7 pm at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay, 11775 Heron Bay Boulevard. This event, which is hosted by the Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee, highlights a different country each year allowing guests to travel around the world without leaving Coral Springs. This year’s theme is “America: Bold Stripes, Bright Stars, Loving Hearts.”

The event starts with a cocktail hour, where guests can sample American signature drinks. At this time, guests will be entertained by costumed characters. Later in the evening, there will be a lavish buffet of traditional American cuisine, and a live show. Finally, the deejay will open up the dance floor for the dancing pleasure of the guests. More than 20 years ago, the International Dinner Dance was created as one of the cultural events hosted by the City’s MultiCultural Advisory Committee. “It was seen as an opportunity for our residents to learn about different cultures without ever leaving Coral Springs – by way of cuisine, music, and entertainment. It was also intended to encourage harmonious interaction among different ethnic groups in a fun, social setting,” said Lydia Cutz, Community Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. The mission of the event is “to offer our neighbors a “Trip Around the World” without leaving Coral Springs; this event is not a fundraiser, but a community event- a way to bring our community together to learn about and celebrate the various world cultures.”

The “Discovery Crew” contest is open through September 23 and is provided by AAA – The Auto Club Group, AmaWaterways, and Allianz Global Assistance. Up to 60 student winners will be chosen from the contest, which is open to students in The Auto Club Group’s select 14 states (including Florida).

“For many young students, this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Haas contin ued. “So, we urge them to enter the contest. The winners will join us on a week-long cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium.

Natalie Stewart, a past winner, describes what the trip meant to her: “The Discovery Crew trip was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. The tours were engaging and I learned so many new things about European history and architecture. My favorite aspect of the trip was getting to travel with other kids my age. I made lifelong friends and had a great time, even just eating dinner on the ship. The trip broadened my horizons and allowed me to see a part of the world I never thought I would. I am so grateful I had this opportunity!”

▸ No purchase necessary. Legal residents of specific zip codes served by The Auto Club Group within the United States who are at least 13 years old and who are 8th grade students in good standing at their school at the time of entry. To confirm eligibility and participate visit www.AAA.com/DiscoveryCrew

• Students will fly to Amsterdam, where they will board the AmaWaterways AmaLucia ship.

AA is bringing back a popular contest for 8th graders, where the winners are taken on a week-long educational river cruise in Europe. There is no cost to enter the contest, and the prize includes the cruise, airfare, travel insurance, and money for passports – for the student and a parent or guardian.

The inaugural contest was held in 2018, with the trip culminating the following year.

“AAA is excited to offer this contest for the second time in collaboration with our long-time partners AmaWaterways and Allianz,” said Deborah Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “The Discovery Crew contest and trip are inspired by our belief in the transformative power of travel and desire to expand children’s view of the world.”

The prize includes: • A week-long educational river cruise from March 12-19, 2023.

While there, students will experience the diverse people and cultures of the area and make new friends.”

• The ship will sail from Amsterdam through the Netherlands and Belgium, before returning to Amsterdam.

Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.

Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.

Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”

Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O.

Surgical Oncology & Pancreatic Surgical Oncology

Dr Donoway is active in the The American and International Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Associations, The Pancreas Club, Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Pancreatic Association. His accomplishments include being the first surgeon in Florida to perform radio frequency ablation as well as laparoscopic major liver resection. He is the former recipient of the South Florida Health Award for use of micro-endoscopy for the detection of early stage breast cancer.

Dr Donoway served on the Board of the American Cancer Society and Gildas club. He has also served as past president of the American Cancer Society Broward chapter and serves on the board of trustees of the Ancient Spanish Monastery.

Dr. Robert Donoway is a Board Certified Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic surgical oncologist, who received his MD and surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania. At Sloan Kettering he was the General Motors Pancreatic Cancer Research Fellow. Dr Donoway is a former Director of the Memorial Regional Cancer Center (now the Memorial Cancer Institute) and Chairman of the Cancer committee for the Memorial Healthcare System as well as a former Chief of Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, South Florida.

B roward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomed students back to the classroom on Tuesday, August 16th. These include technology upgrades and increased security personnel at each county school. Students and faculty will continue to be required to wear their student identification lanyards throughout the day. Some of the new security measures, however, won’t be quite as visible. “Many cameras throughout our schools have been upgraded. Enhancing those cameras from analog to digital and also having additional security measures as you come into the school as you’re entering the schools (were a priority),” said Jaime Alberti, BCPS’s new Chief Safety and Security Officer. “It’s not just about the technology but also about ensuring that we have the personnel that supports the schools and provides additional security at that school.”

A critical aspect of preventing tragedies like the one at Stoneman Douglas High School is identifying threats before they do something horrible. The 2022/23 school year will be the first year the county’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Department will be active. The department will coordinate and implement the school system’s newly revised Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA) Procedures. BTA Procedures incorporate the most updated recommendations from national leaders in threat assessment, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Secret Service, and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). With the goal of maintaining safe and secure schools, the County’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Procedures Manual outlines and provides guidance to school and district staff on the most current threat assessment policies and procedures for Broward County Public Schools.

2020 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year Deputy Michael Francis embodies what it means to be a trusted public servant and leader. Each day, he diligently works to improve the lives of Broward County residents. From assisting families with legal aid to helping homeless individuals obtain shelter, his efforts have tremendously benefited our community.

HONORING

It is an honor to recognize Deputy Francis as BSO’s 2020 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year.

The BSO Aviation Unit serves as our eyes in the sky. Comprised of six pilots, six tactical flight officers (TFO), and two pilot-sergeants, this unit is called out for incidents anywhere they are needed at a moment’s notice. From finding missing or endangered children to aiding in offshore water rescues, the unit is a proven asset for all of Broward County. In 2021, the Aviation Unit flew 3,127 missions totaling 1,711 flight hours; of those missions, 1,305 were requests from outside agencies. Their efforts resulted in more than 1,000 arrests and the recovery of 241 stolen vehicles. Excellence defines this unit, and I am proud to announce them as the 2021 Unit of the Year for the Department of Preparedness and Response. 2021 Volunteer Service Award I’ve always said it takes a village to raise a child — and we take that to heart at BSO. Helping our county’s children grow into responsible, civically engaged adults is one of our passions. Last year, BSO launched our summer L.E.A.D. Camp (Learning, Educating, and Developing). The innovative eight-week leadership program helps shape the lives of Broward youth ages 10-18. The success of our inaugural camp was made possible thanks to our incredible volunteers, including many BSO employees, who dedicated their time to managing the program and serving as mentors – encouraging and enriching the lives of Broward’s youth. It is a privilege to award these employees the 2021 Volunteer Service Award. These highlights are just a few of the tremendous accomplishments of the BSO team. In addition, we will award our most prestigious recognition, the Medal of Honor, to four courageous BSO veterans who performed extraordinary acts at significant personal risk to their lives. Additional accolades will be given to the detective of the year, firefighter of the year, communications operator of the year, civilian employees of the year, citizen of the year and units of the year, among others. I invite you to join me as we formally honor these outstanding individuals at the 2020 and 2021 Annual Award Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on September 14 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. I hope to see you there.

The awards ceremony celebrates the best and bravest in public safety. These dedicated professionals were selected for their exemplary actions, outstanding achievements and service in safeguarding Broward County. The accolades for these individuals are well deserved, and I’ll share with you some impactful highlights.

Sheriff Gregory Tony

For our family, September is the time we start planning for the fall and winter holidays. The stressors of everyday life and planning for the upcoming holidays can add to the difficulties that some people are already experiencing. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and a good time to talk to our family members and friends about suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call the new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you know someone who is struggling with their mental health, call 211 in Broward. Also, in Northwest Broward, we have wonderful organizations such as Eagle’s Haven Wellness Center (eagleshaven.org) and Tomorrow’s Rainbow (tomorrowsrainbow.org) that are there to help.

On the legislative front, in 2021 I sponsored the bill to establish a Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. I am grateful to Speaker Sprowls for appointing me to the 19-member Commission. We have now been meeting for a year and are working on submitting draft recommendations to the Governor, Senate President, and Speaker of the House. Our goal is to recommend how we can improve the delivery of mental health and substance abuse services in the State of Florida. I am in awe of the talent and experience we have on the Commission. If you are interested in the work we are doing, please visit https:// myflfamilies.com/service-programs/samh/commission or reach out to our office.

W hile growing up in Boston, for us, Labor Day was the unofficial end of the summer. Not only was it a chance to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our labor force, but also their contributions to helping make our country strong. Additionally, for some, it was the last 3-day weekend to take a quick vacation or take advantage of retail sales before we went back to school. In Florida, school has already started and some of us may have taken advantage of the sales tax holiday, so this 3-day weekend may give us a chance to relax and recharge.

Finally, I want to wish all those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah a very happy and sweet new year. As always, my team and I are always available to help in any way we can. Please reach out to us if we can be of assistance, either via email at HDist096@ myfloridahouse.gov or at 954-956-5600. S eptember means it’s time to say farewell to the long days of summer and welcome the golden glow of the fall season. Time moves on, but we will never forget the unthinkable events that took place on September 11, 2001, and the lasting impact that they’ve had on our community and country. This year marks 21 years since the terror attacks devastated our nation. To pay tributes to the victims and fallen heroes, residents are invited to visit the September 11th Memorial located at the Northwest Regional Library (3151 N. University Drive). Family Fun Night will take place on Wednesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. in the Coral Springs Gymnasium. This free event is one of many interactive activities our Parks and Recreation Department hosts throughout the year to bring families together. In addition, Bites-N-Sips will return to the Great Lawn of City Hall on Friday, September 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Don’t miss this Fiesta-themed event with Hispanic-themed food trucks, music, entertainment, and more. For information about our city’s upcoming events, visit CoralSprings.gov/events. Mayor Rich Walker

The City Commission of the City of Parkland is fortunate to have a great working relationship with our City staff. While that may seem like a given, you might be sur prised at how many examples there are of cities in which the elected body and employ ees are not in sync. But here it’s not just a matter of the Mayor and Commission telling City staff what to do, it’s the Commission and staff working together for the best possible outcome. The biggest part, of course, is you. The residents of our City. When we work together with you, whether hearing from you individually on an informal basis or seeking your input in a more formal manner through surveys, polls, or focus groups, we always benefit from your input. While all cities could benefit from coming together, it seems we do it in Parkland more than most. When we turn inward and respond to our most basic human instinct to help others, we are always better for it.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR PARKLAND UPDATE

O ne of the privi leges of being Mayor is how frequently I’m able to interact with others. Parkland residents, organizations, and businesses in our City and beyond, elected officials from other cities, and even people from out of state. At times, the interaction takes the form of simple small talk, other times I might be digging into policy matters, and at others, the conversation might take the form of mutually beneficial troubleshoot ing or sharing of best practices. Regardless of the form the conversation takes, I come away with a firm conclusion— we all benefit when we do things together. I realize this isn’t necessarily a eureka moment, but in a time of impersonal elec tronic interaction and detached social media communication, it’s a great refresher. On the most basic level, youth sports fulfill this axiom across the country every day including right here in Parkland. When you account for parents as coaches and family members, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, watching from the sidelines, it’s easy to see how a game’s outcome is second to being together. This dynamic of togetherness plays out at Pine Trails Park and Terramar Park just about every weekend. It is always better when we come together to achieve things. Whether it’s a team, a school class, a religious group, or an army of volunteers—City employees or elected officials—coming together for a common purpose, it’s always more reward ing when we do it together.

By Mayor Rich Walker

If you would like to share your thoughts about coming together or you have ques tions or comments you’d like to share with me, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofpark land.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
